The Samsung Galaxy Nexus, Google’s latest superphone, has just been announced, so those who want to pick it up can make a beeline for the smartphone, be it online or at brick and mortar stores. Just how much do you think you will need to fork out for the Galaxy Nexus? We are looking at a $299.99 price point with a new two-year customer agreement, of course. What is so special about the Samsung Galaxy Nexus? For starters, it will be able to let you browse the Web, stream music and do much more at blazing speeds thanks to Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network, where you can experience fast download speeds of 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps) and upload speeds of 2 to 5 Mbps.

Not only that, this is the first smartphone from the Android-powered community that will run on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich right out of the box, delivering an entirely new look and feel to the world of Android. The Galaxy Nexus will deliver a redesigned user experience with improved multi-tasking, notifications, Near Field Communications (NFC) sharing with Android Beam and a full e-browsing experience. A slew of standard user interface features such as the lock screen, home screen, phone app and others in between have been rethought and redesigned, with Google hoping to turn Android into a simple, beautiful and useful operating system.

As for the hardware specifications, we are looking at a super slim 9.47mm design which will surely please those who place plenty of priority over the aesthetics of a device, and even being so slim, it will still be able to cram in a 4.65″ HD Super AMOLED Contour Display that lets you watch movies, view pictures and play games which will come to life in 720p (1280 x 720) resolution. A dual-core 1.2GHz application processor will run proceedings from within, and the HTML5 Web browser that has been optimized for dual-core processing with Android 4.0 will make your online experience a seamless one.

You can also be super popular with the rest of your mates as well thanks to the built-in Mobile Hotspot capability, letting you share either a 4G LTE or 3G connection with up to 10 Wi-Fi-enabled devices. A 5-megapixel camera is located at the back, boasting zero-shutter lag for instant photo capturing, autofocus and LED flash with full 1080p recording, while up in front you have a 1.3-megapixel camera for video chat purposes. Since this is such a beauty, there is a textured soft-touch back cover to turn this into a slip-resistant phone (to a certain extent, of course). Any takers for Google’s latest beauty?

For those who are looking for a Universal Remote, and have an Android smartphone, your prayers have been answered.

Okay, you probably should pray for bigger things than a universal remote for your Android smartphone, but Griffin still has the answer with the Beacon. The Beacon was very popular for iOS, and the Android shift is welcome.

The Beacon is designed to be completely wireless. It doesn’t even need to be plugged in at all, and requires 4 AA batteries for operation. The user syncs their phone via Bluetooth, and then downloads Dijit’s universal remote app to pair with their TV, DVD, Blu-ray, DVR, cable box, and stereo. The Dijit app also comes with an integrated program guide for a touchscreen device for changing channels, volumes, input, as well as setting a DVR.

It really does make it easier, as the other day I was looking for my remote control. I lose my remotes all the time, but I hardly lose my phone. If I lose it at home, I just go to a site like icantfindmyphone.com. Oh, and it is good to have one remote for everything as well.

You should be able to get the Beacon for Android on the Griffin website for about $69.99. It is compatible with Android phones, tablets, or MP3 players running version 2.3.3 or higher.

Some of you might remember when we reviewed the iPad Handstand, a way of putting the iPad on a frame so it can be held with one hand and easily rotatable. As I recall, this Handstand might not have been available for the iPad 2, but the REV360 is made for both models.

Like the Handstand, it has a rotating disk that allows you to spin at 360 degrees with some clicking action, to easily go from portrait to landscape.

In addition to this winning feature, the handle is so constructed so that when the REV360 is on the table, it is at an angle. This is good for typing on it, or watching a video.

Another feature is it has a hard back cover which is perfect for protecting against scratches. Did I mention that it is eco-friendly, being that it is made with 100 percent recycled plastic and resin? It is.

You should be able to purchase the REV360 for the iPad and iPad 2 at the Hub Innovations site for about $49.95.

After the critical acclaim that the Nokia Lumia 800 received the company will be looking to repeat its success with their lower-end handset the Lumia 710

Nokia has released a statement which confirms that the company has started shipping the Lumia 710 today with the handset due to arrive in stores of the next coming weeks.

In the statement Nokia outlines the order in which the phone will get it's release with handsets initially going on sale in Taiwan and then moving to Russia, Hong Kong and finally Europe.

When it does finally arrive in the UK it'll have an estimated price of around 270 EUR which equates to a little over £230 however no official pricing for the UK has been announced.
Nokia Lumia 710 features

While the Nokia Lumia 800 is considered a high-end smartphone with specs that rival many of the big handsets out there today, the Lumia 710 is aimed more at the mass market.

While the plastic interchangeable casing may not be premium you still get all of the Nokia exclusives on Windows Phone 7 that you would get on the 800 which includes Nokia Drive and Nokia Music.

The Nokia Lumia 710 UK release date is expected to be 6 January so while it may not be a pre-Christmas release it won't be long to wait before it hits the shelves.

While Japan's NHK has been working on the successor to HDTV, Super Hi-Vision, for years, there haven't been any direct-view HDTVs capable of showing its full 7,680 x 4,320 pixel resolution until this prototype unveiled today by Sharp. Its 103 pixels per inch may be just a fraction of those found in some of the pocket displays we've seen at SID this week, but that's still far more than the 36ppi of a 60-inch 1080p HDTV. If estimates are correct, we'll still be waiting until around 2020 for that 33MP video and 22.2 channel sound to actually be broadcast, although there's a possibility of some demonstrations happening during the 2012 Olympics. Skip past the break for the available specs and a video demonstration, or just head over to the NHK's Science & Technology Research Laboratories in Tokyo between the 26th and 29th of this month.

Just a few days after unveiling the waterproof IS13SH, Sharp has come out with yet another beastly submersible, known as the Aquos Phone 102SH. Juiced by a 1GHz TI OMAP 4430 CPU, this Gingerbread-coated handset boasts a 4.5-inch glasses-free 3D display with 720 x 1280 resolution, along with 1GB of RAM and a 32GB microSDHC card. The device also packs a 12 megapixel CMOS sensor and supports DLNA, infrared connections, e-wallet functionality and your standard 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth 3.0 capabilities. No word yet on price, but Japanese carrier SoftBank will begin selling the 102SH in early December. Scurry past the break for more information in the full and translated PR.

Update: Oops, it looks we got the resolution terminologies mixed up. It's definitely 720p HD, not qHD. Apologies for the confusion.
We first got our hands-on this device's twinner -- the Aquos SH-12C -- back atComputex, with that model sporting the Japan-only 1seg receiver, FeliCa (NFC) and 800MHz / 2100MHz bands. This time out, the OEM's made some subtle changes to its China entry, reducing the handset's storage from 8GB to 2GB, and packing it with GSM / WCDMA / HSPA radios. The rest of the spec list remains exactly the same, leaving this skinned Android 2.3 phone with a 4.2-inch qHD stereoscopic 3D display, dual 8 megapixel cameras, 512MB RAM and a 1.4GHz Qualcomm MSM8255 Snapdragon processor. If translated pressers are your idea of fun, go ahead and check out the source.
The big update to support this change will start hitting Xbox 360 consoles around the world on 6 December.
Microsoft has signed up 40 media firms to provide both live and on-demand movie and TV services for the console.

Bing on the Xbox lets people find all the games, movies and TV shows related to keywords
The update also lets people control their TVs by talking into the Kinect motion-spotting gadgets.

Mainstream media

The most noticeable change made by the update will be to swap the Xbox's familiar tabbed interface for the so-called Metro look that is based around "tiles".

This uses square and oblong tiles that sit under different menu headings which lump together media and content relevant to that category. For instance, tiles under the "social" menu give access to Twitter, Facebook and Kinect video calls.
The blocky "tiled" look from Windows Phone 7 will be reflected on the Xbox interface

The Metro interface is also expected to be the default for Windows 8 when that debuts in late 2012.

Microsoft's Bing search engine is also being rolled out to the Xbox and it will be able to search for anything available on any of the tiles. Kinect owners will be able to use their voice to make queries.

As well as live TV programmes, other on-demand services will be made available via tiles under the "Apps" menu. Only Gold members of Xbox Live will be able to access them.

About 35 million of the 57 million Xbox consoles around the world are connected to Xbox Live.

From 6 December in the UK, Amazon's movie streaming service Lovefilm will be available through the Xbox.

Later in the month it will be joined by other on-demand services including 4OD, Blinkbox and Sony's Crackle. The iPlayer will be available via an Xbox Live app from early 2012.

Sky TV services are already available on the console. Microsoft does not mention ITV in its press release. Competition

Gold Members of Xbox Live will also get access to a cloud-based service that mirrors their profile and logs which games they own. This means they will be able to use any Xbox 360 via their gamertag.

"This is now the benchmark against which all other living room initiatives should be compared," said James McQuivey of Forrester Research.

Mr McQuivey said the Kinect should help Microsoft differentiate the Xbox from rivals such as cable TV firms, Google, Apple and others who piped content through set-top boxes.

Talking to a TV would build a "new bridge" between people and what they wanted to watch, he said. It should make it easier for people to get at novel content and services in the future, he added.

Mobile projectors, I will admit, did not really take off as fast or as far as I thought it would have when it was first introduced to the world. It seemed that the poor battery life as well as relatively low resolution count proved to be its Achilles Heel, but that has not stopped manufacturers from giving it a go again and again. 3M is one of the pioneers in the field of mobile projectors, and this time around, they have decided to keep us entertained with the £299.99 3M CP45 Pocket Camcorder Projector.

What makes this particular gizmo so special is the fact that this is not only a mobile projector, but a camcorder as well, so you can always record whatever you want on the go, and then play it back for your family and friends to see without the need to hook it up to a different device. Hmmm, sounds suspiciously familiar like one of those Nikon shooters. Hardware specifications include the ability to record in HD video, shoot 5-megapixel stills with 4x digital zoom, carry a 2.4″ LCD display, have 2GB of internal memory, and can project anywhere from 6″ to 65″ images. Battery life in projection mode is estimated to be up to 100 minutes, and it can record video for up to 150 minutes on a full charge. Sounds like fun, you might want to place a pre-order for it today.

Modern Warfare 3 is still the UK's best selling video game, having stayed ahead of it's competition for a fourth straight week.

Modern Warfare 3 latest..
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 review
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 video
Modern Warfare 3 prices slashed
Modern Warfare 3 leaks online

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 continues it's domination of the UK's all format games charts as it moves towards being a probable Christmas chart-topper ahead of Ea produced rivals Battlefield 3 and FIFA 12.

This also marks the first week since launch in which Modern Warfare 3 has seen an increase in sales. Copies of Activision's blockbuster are still flying off the shelves, and it is difficult to see anything knocking the FPS king off it's perch before Christmas.

FIFA 12 has seen a resurgence in sales and jumps up into second place, whilst Ubisoft take third and fourth spots with Assassin's Creed: Revelations and Just Dance 3 respectively. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim rounds out the top 5, perhaps struggling a little under the weight of recent patch issues.

Saints Row: The Third has dropped three places into sixth, just ahead of Professor Layton and the Spectre's Call in seventh. Mario Kart 7 is this week's only new entry into the top 40, and debuts in an impressive eighth position.Battlefield 3 and Super Mario 3D Land make up the rest of the UK's top 10.

Future tech is taken to a new level with Samsung outing its flexible display technology in a new tablet concept video

Offering a tantalising insight into what is soon to be possible Samsung has released a video outing its concept flexible AMOLED displays and the features they are likely to boast in the future.

Far from the first time Samsung has touted its bendable display wares the new trailer puts the innovative and futuristic tech into a number of real world situations for the first time showing how in the future users could use their malleable tablet-esque devices to translate conversations and explore the sights.

With concept designs earlier in the year hinting at a potential 2012 flexible phone arrival form Samsung, the new tablet trailer shows how the tech could be paired with augmented reality to allow users to view meals from a menu or act as a camera.

At CES 2011 back in January the Korean tech giant showed off its first 4.5-inch smartphone sized flexible display with the convexed offering used to host video content with an impressive WVGA 800 x 480p resolution adorning the 0.3mm thick screen.

If you thinking of grabbing and using your Kinect from the 360 on your PC, you will be out of luck, as Microsoft plans for the Windows version will require all new and better hardware to use on the PC

Since announcing a few weeks ago that the Kinect for Windows commercial program will launch in early 2012, we've been asked whether there will also be new Kinect hardware especially for Windows. The answer is yes; building on the existing Kinect for Xbox 360 device, we have optimized certain hardware components and made firmware adjustments which better enable PC-centric scenarios. Coupled with the numerous upgrades and improvements our team is making to the SDK and runtime, the new hardware delivers features and functionality that Windows developers and Microsoft customers have been asking for.

Simple changes include shortening the USB cable to ensure reliability across a broad range of computers and the inclusion of a small dongle to improve coexistence with other USB peripherals. Of particular interest to developers will be the new firmware which enables the depth camera to see objects as close as 50 centimeters in front of the device without losing accuracy or precision, with graceful degradation down to 40 centimeters. "Near Mode" will enable a whole new class of "close up" applications, beyond the living room scenarios for Kinect for Xbox 360

Does this mean the 'Next-Gen Xbox' (aka) 'Xbox 720' will have yet another Kinect SKU combining the full-body-tracking of Kinect with a close-up option to provide additional functionality for the more hardcore pad base games?

By doing so, Sony Ericsson is the first mobile phone manufacturer to support WebGL for the Android web browser. WebGL basically makes it possible to extend the capability of the JavaScript programming language to allow it to generate interactive 3D graphics within the web browser. Read more about Sony Ericsson’s WebGL support after the jump, and find out about special considerations to keep in mind when developing 3D web applications targeting touch-enabled devices.
In this article, Anders Isberg from Sony Ericsson’s Technology Reseach department explains more about WebGL and what to think of when you develop 3D web applications for touch-enabled devices. If you scroll down, you will also find three WebGL examples that you can browse to from the Android browser, if you have the latest software on your 2011 Xperia™ phone. You can also check out how it looks in the video above.

Earlier this year, I made a blog post about an internal WebGL research project on how WebGL could be implemented in phones. Based on the feedback we received back then, we decided to launch support for WebGL in the latest software upgrade we rolled out for the 2011 Xperia™ phones during this autumn and winter. Now let’s take a closer look at what WebGL support means for mobile.

What is required to implement a WebGL application?
Unlike other 3D web technologies, WebGL will not require any plug-in modules. Once the device is WebGL enabled, no further installations are required, and developers can go ahead and explore the WebGL™ functionality. To learn how to develop WebGL applications, we recommend visiting one of the following online resources that gives an introduction on WebGL application development, for example, Learning WebGL or the Khronos WebGL Tutorial.

Due to the fact that WebGL is a low level API, the technical threshold is rather high if you are new to developing WebGL applications. However, there is no reason to be scared by this. There are several JavaScript frameworks available that make it easier to create WebGL applications. Several of these can be found on the Khronos WebGL Wiki.

Navigating and interacting with 3D web applications
Most of the existing WebGL applications available on the web are tailored for a desktop environment. Consequently, those applications are making use of the W3C DOM Mouse and Keyboard events to navigate and control the WebGL application. However, on a mobile device, the touch events must be used to navigate and control the 3D scene. The Android web browser supports three basic touch events that can be used to navigate and control the WebGL application:
touchstart: generated when the finger is placed on a selected DOM element.
touchmove: generated when a finger is moved over a DOM element.
touchend: generated when the finger is removed from a DOM element.

The following code example shows how an event listener is assigned to touchmove event on a WebGL accelerated HTML Canvas element:

// Add an event listener on the WebGL™ canvas
webglcanvas.addEventListener('touchmove', onTouchMove);
function onTouchMove (event) {
// Cancel the default event handler
event.preventDefault();
// Readout the current X and Y coordinate relative the viewport
var currentX = event.targetTouches[0].clientX;
var currentY = event.targetTouches[0].clientY;
}

In many cases, the same code used to handle mouse movements can be reused for touch events. There are also frameworks available to simplify the handling of touch events. For example, there is a jQuery plugin that unifies touch and mouse events across platforms, as well as a Mobile jQuery that has support for high level events like swipe.

Considerations when developing for mobile
Devices such as Xperia™ PLAY, Xperia™ arc, Xperia™ neo and Xperia™ pro are equipped with a 1 GHz Snapdragon™ processor and an Adreno™ 205 graphics processor, so even if the processing power is not in parity with desktop computers, there are enough processing capabilities to create astonishing 3D web applications. Check out the video in the beginning to see some examples of WebGL running on a 2011 Xperia™ phone. You can also check out these examples by browsing to them from the Android browser on your 2011 Xperia™ phone, if you have the latest software. Just click one of the links to the demos below. Please be patient while the demos are loading, it might take some time.

When working with WebGL in mobile devices, it is important to take a look under the hood to get good performance. It is essential to consider how the shaders are written, how many polygons that are used in the 3D model, and to select textures carefully. At Developer World, we have published a blog post called Optimising shader performance for the Xperia™ PLAY, which includes several useful tips that can be used to enhance the performance.

One limitation in the Android browser is that web workers are not supported. For some WebGL frameworks that could be a limiting factor. For example, the WebGL framework three.js implements resource loading with web workers. In the WebGL examples listed earlier you can see how this can be solved by using a JavaScript shim layer that emulates web workers. More information about this topic is available at the Google Code Web Workers Emulation project site.

Hopefully this has given you enough information (and confidence!) to get you started with your own WebGL project! Good luck!

The most notable change from the norm is the 7-inch screen and the touchscreen stylus, known officially as the Magic Pen. It connects wirelessly to the Flyer, and enables you to annotate, highlight and erase in supported apps. It offers a measure of pressure sensitivity (unlike most styluses on capacitive screens), so may pique the interest of artists.

Instead of Android 3.0, the Flyer uses Android 2.3.3, skinned with HTC's familiar Sense UI. In this case, it's Sense 2.1 for Tablet. We'll go into more detail about exactly what that means on the third page, but for now we'll just say it's HTC's way of trying make a version of Android designed for phones work a little better on larger screens

The hype behind the tablet form factor is so massive that it would be silly for any manufacturer not to take notice. Luckily, just about every manufacturer already has taken notice by releasing a tablet or planning to release one at some point in the future.

Acer, for example, has come forth to release their Iconia Tab A100. This 7-inch Android ‘Honeycomb’ powered tablet features a resolution of 1024 x 600, a NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, 5 megapixel rear facing camera with 720p video capture, 2 megapixel front facing camera, microUSB/HDMI ports and a microSD slot for additional storage.

In terms of actual storage capacities Acer will be offering the Iconia Tab A100 in 2 flavors. You can snag an 8GB model for $329.99 and a 16GB model for $349.99 in USA.

Say hello to the future of gaming, introducing Microsoft Kinect!
Announced recently by Microsoft, this new device from Redmond is the next step in the evolution of gaming. Designed to be an accessory for the Microsoft Xbox 360, Kinect opens new possibilities for gamers.

With Kinect, gamers do away with game controllers, instead, they play the game using their body. Now, talk about total immersion. Here’s a video of how Microsoft sees the future of gaming.

Dubbed the iPhone 4S, the latest offering by the Cupertino-based company is more of an incremental upgrade than a complete overhaul of the iPhone 4. Design and dimensions stay the same, but there’s a notable increase in processing power.

The Apple iPhone 4S comes with the A5 chipset, which is the SoC that powered the iPad 2. It comes with a dual-core Cortex-A9 CPU and PowerVR SGX543MP2 GPU, which as we know is a pretty powerful combo.

The new iPhone 4S comes with the A5 chipset

The Apple iPhone 4S also improves on the network data speeds of its predecessor. It’s not the LTE everyone was hoping for, but 14.4 Mbps is still pretty good for most market. More importantly, however, the iPhone 4S is a true world phone, supporting both GSM and CDMA networks.

The 4S features both GSM and CDMA connectivity

The other major upgrade that the Apple iPhone 4S brings is in the camera department. The 5 megapixel shooter of its predecessor has been replaced by an 8 megapixel unit and the video recording has been upgraded from 720p to 1080p.

8MP camera with 1080p video capture

Much like its predecessor, the iPhone 4S will come in black and white color versions (only this time the white one will be available from day one). However there will be three storage options this time – a larger 64GB edition will join the 16GB and 32GB ones.

The iPhone 4S pre-orders will start on October 7, while actual sales begin on October 14. Pricing on a two-year contract is $199,$299 and $399 for the 16GB, 32GB and 64GB versions, respectively.

iPhone 4S pricing and launch date
