His left wingman was just destroyed in a ball of energized plasma, and the enemy fighters maneuvered to complete their attack. Jeff stole a glance out his right wing and was reassured by Quedocdo’s remaining tightly formed Cooja fighter. Several close shots and a pair of missiles launched caused them both to pitch up, then right, and finally down with a following increase to maximum thrust that caused him to nearly lose consciousness. Jeff raced for the planet’s surface with Quedocdo flying cover. Less than three minutes to impact the surface. The g-forces from the constant tight maneuvering was excruciating and the remaining wingman screamed in protest.

The enemy was keenly aware of his formation’s lack of reserves and continued toattack like wolves sensing an injured prey. Jeff was not about to give up, because to do so would mean certain failure and possible death. What was the count now? Five to one… and the enemy had the advantage. It didn’t matter, it would take only one well placed shot to end his life. The ship’s warning sensors also screamed their protest at his high g maneuvers. Jeff would have lost consciousness countless times except the specially designed seat continued to squeeze the right amount of blood from his lower extremities to his brain, which in turn caused a massive headache. He cursed that the fighter was able to take much more stress than the human body. A dozen times he felt like punching the override and taking the compensation system offline. Jeff felt a gray out would be a better measure of one’s limit. Those damn sensors would allow for the greatest degree of stress without killing the pilot, a condition that, for his physiology, was difficult to get accustomed to. A half dozen balls of plasma energy from his rear to front signaled he was again nearly destroyed. Sweat began to fill the space between his flight suit and skin which in turn started to interrupt the biofeedback connection that kept the fighter from overstressing the pilot. Another Master Caution light on the malfunction panel warned of the loss of feedback. Jeff looked at the bright red warning light and punched the reset as a terrain warning flashed red. Another string of bright blue plasma pulses streaked across his canopy and disappeared in the distance. Too close. The terrain was coming up too fast. Level off now, his mind screamed, buying another second longer might help to fool the pursuers. Most had positioned relatively above his intended path, so when he did pull out he and his wingman would have to fly through a wall of deadly cannon fire.

Quedocdo was prepared. Jeff transmitted, “Now!” In unison both fighters rolled 180 degrees and pulled back hard to arrest their perpendicular dash to the surface. The enemy’s momentary hesitation doomed the four fighters that had continued the vertical dash. The g-meters read 12.65 at their highest point. The enemy fighter that was following below their flight path had begun to pull up early, but when it noticed the deception, it too rolled to continue chase. So did the three positioned above the fleeing Cooja fighters. Jeff and Quedocdo barely cleared the lush vegetation of the valley floor. The enemy wasn’t as lucky. All four craft that were giving chase crashed into the forest. That left the six enemy fighters that had raced to the far end of the mountain pass in an effort to lie in ambush.

With the safety of distance, Jeff asked, “Quedocdo, do you want to call it a day and dash for the comfort and protection of the Katvanshevic?”

INTRODUCTION

“The Sikoras are dying out!‖ I shouted as I awoke.” The Sikoras are dying out!‖

The long dream had started in the Jewish cemetery. The graves of my maternal relatives seemed to be going up everywhere, two or three under construction while the cement was still fresh on the others, like a poorly planned but teeming slum of the dead. While the Schifters, my father's family, were reproducing like yeast, my mother's side was experiencing a population implosion. Before long, there would be more of us within the cemetery's brick walls than out.

Hector asked me to calm down. ―Stop bringing the house down with your shouting,‖ he said. ―There are still some relatives of your mother left. It's true that some of them are a little mentally defective, but there are others who can keep the species alive.‖

“You mean I had a nightmare?‖” I asked.

“Another one,‖ he said, referring to the dreams I had been having all week.” I guess you won't be able to go to sleep right away. So,‖ he added without much enthusiasm, “why don't you tell me your dream? It might help you to settle down.‖

San José's Jewish cemetery is located in a southwestern district of Costa Rica's capital, behind the much larger Catholic cemetery. The property was bought on April 19, 1931; my grandfather, David Sikora, was one of the promoters of the project. In one of the early dreams in the series, I saw him signing a check and handing it over to the seller in the name of the few Jews then living in the country. “I intend to have my wife join me here,‖ he told the seller,” and I want a plot for her. If I have to strangle her one day, I don't want her buried in the streets like a dog.‖

On October 9, 1932, the first burial took place. My grandfather was thrilled. “Didn't I tell you that it was good to think ahead?‖ he said to the other members of the Chevra Kiddushe, the religious board that managed the cemetery and made sure that the dead were buried according to prescribed rituals.” We already have our first tenant.‖

“The man's lucky,‖ said Don José, a fellow Jew.” He bought this plot dirt cheap.‖

“Yes, sir,‖ said my grandfather.” Just imagine what it's going to cost to live here in fifty years.‖

A question I get asked often is – do I need a website of my own?

This is a GREAT question. When I started in this business I asked exactly the same. I had precisely ZERO knowledge of how to create a website. The thought terrified me. I had the attitude ‘I can’t do that’ (an attitude incidentally that I had to change and so will you).

It would be so much easier – so I thought – to use a website that I could get for free, and that was already set up for me. Particularly as there are so many free websites available.

Let me be blunt here.

Your website is integral to the success of your business. YOUR website, not somebody else’s. If you don’t spend at least a little time getting to learn the basics (which is the point of this eBook) you will be constantly nervous when working from home, as there will be a huge part of your business that you ‘don’t really understand.’ Clearly you cannot operate like this.

What happens when something goes wrong, or you want to make a very simple change to your site? Will you call up your technical person or your web buddy every time? Will you out-source all your web questions to someone else? Your website is the life blood of your business. Get used to it. If you really are serious about making money from home, you need to get over your web fear. You will accomplish that with this eBook.

Most scientists today accept that 99% of the multiverse is invisible – every current physics textbook says so! Only 1% of the multiverse is visible to us So the obvious question is: When you look at yourself in the mirror, are you seeing 100% of yourself or just 1%?

Do you possess invisible bodies which you are not aware of and which survive the death of your biomolecular body? How do we go about investigating whether there are such bodies? Why can’t you see them? Do established scientific theories support the existence of such invisible bodies? How do these bodies operate and what kind of universes do they inhabit?

Recent advances in Science help us to answer these questions If paral lel universes are taken to mean universes which share the same spacetime as ours, then we have to include the ‘super universes’ popularised by metaphysicists They are called ‘super’ because they contain particles which are much higher in mass, energy and frequency than particles in the ‘Standard Model ’ The Standard Model, used by physicists currently to describe and classify most of the ‘standard’ particles in our ordinarily visible universe, is acknowledged to be incomplete by most scientists Super particles, however, are ordinarily invisible to us and our current scientific instruments – just like dark matter and energy, which Science has had an embarrassing confrontation with in recent years.

BLOODLINE

Cate was afraid. This was her first birth and her mother Isabelle was gone. The pain in her swollen stomach was like a blacksmith‘s molten poker. Her fever had not broken in the last two days. The midwife had told her that this kind of pain was normal, but she didn‘t think so. She knew that girls her age often died in childbirth, but she wasn‘t worried about herself. Her Savior would take care of her if anything happened. Cate was worried about the baby. If the baby should die before being baptized…. No, she could not think of such things. She stretched out on the small wooden cot, trying to get comfortable. Each position was worse than the last. Her white cotton robe was saturated. The midwife tried to calm her by rubbing her wrinkled hands on her neck and pressing wet strips of cloth onto her forehead. Cate wished that her sister….

Her thought was interrupted by an agonizing convulsion of pain. Her scream caused villagers in the fields to turn their heads. Blood started pouring out between her legs. She grabbed the midwife‘s blue shirt in desperation. ―If it is a boy, I want his name to be Jacquemin, after my brother….‖ Cate didn‘t get time to express her name preference if the child was a girl. Before she blacked out, all Cate could see was the grimaced look of concern on the face of the midwife.

Ann, the midwife, had seen cases like this before. The placenta had ripped from its moorings. She acted quickly, using a metal tool to pry the infant‘s head through the birth canal. Seconds counted. She expertly removed the umbilical cord from around the child‘s neck and the mucous from the child‘s mouth. The infant looked a little blue, but within a few seconds, the infant gasped and began wailing. Success. The infant was a girl! She had beautiful red hair, like Cate‘s sister. She placed the child and the umbilical cord in a pre-arranged bassinette. Her assistant Marie attended to the child while Ann attempted to save the mother, but there was not much she could do. Cate had lost a lot of blood. She kept placing water on the girl‘s face, but after a few minutes, she realized Cate was lost. Her soul was now with Jesus Christ. She sent for the local priest.

Jean Colin, Cate‘s new husband, was a young tax collector for the duchy of Bar. He was the son of the Mayor of the nearby town of Greux. He was not a horrible man, and he had his tender moments, but for the most part, he was someone who thought of himself first and everyone else last. He had not even wanted children, seeing them as a nuisance and an expense, but his beautiful wife Cate had insisted that God‘s plan was for them to have children. Colin had fallen for her as soon as he had seen her pale cheek, her long blonde tresses, and her beautiful blue eyes. Cate‘s father was a tax collector like him, and her dowry had been sufficient. She was by far the fairest young girl in Domremy. His hope was to move to Chinon or even Paris someday, where he might move up the ranks and improve his position.

The 1930s and 1940s were a vibrant, seminal time for a gigantic audience of eager readers, probably the largest per capita audience of readers in American history. The magazine racks were chock-full of publications with ragged trims, garish cover art, cheap brown pulp paper, low cover prices —and the most excitement you could hold in your hands.

“Pulp” magazines, named for their rough-cut, pulpwood paper, were a vehicle for more amazing tales than Scheherazade could have told in a million and one nights. Set apart from higher-class “slick” magazines, printed on fancy glossy paper with quality artwork and superior production values, the pulps were for the “rest of us,” adventure story after adventure story for people who liked to read. Pulp ﬁction authors were no-holds-barred entertainers —real storytellers. They were

more interested in a thrilling plot twist, a horriﬁc villain or a white-knuckle adventure than they were in lavish prose or convoluted metaphors.

The sheer volume of tales released during this wondrous golden age remains unmatched in any other period of literary history —hundreds of thousands of published stories in over nine hundred dierent magazines. Some titles lasted only an issue or two; many magazines succumbed to paper shortages during World War II, while others endured for decades yet. Pulp ﬁction remains as a treasure trove of stories you can read, stories you can love, stories you can remember. The stories were driven by plot and character, with grand heroes, terrible villains, beautiful damsels (often in distress), diabolical plots, amazing places, breathless romances. What is a web page ?

Web pages are very different from, say, a Word document. In a word processor document all aspects of the page are incorporated into the one file ... the graphics, font styles and sizes and other formatting.

A web page is basically plain (ASCII) text with 'tags' (as ASCII text) incorporated. The graphics are all separate files. Your web browser reads the ASCII text with the tags and graphic files and displays the complete formatted page.

Because web pages are only ASCII text they can be prepared in any text editor. However, there are advantages to preparing a web page using a special web page or HTML editor, as will become obvious as we progress through the course.

The purpose of this text is not to abruptly reveal David’s tricks; any good magic fan will certainly be able to understand most techniques used by the performer. It is mainly to remind people that David Blaine is not some kind of new super hero but simply a good (and yes, a very good) entertainer working to perform good magic tricks and only tricks, but he sometimes (often?) forgets to say it. Needless to say that he is working with a team and has counsellors that counts amongst the best illusionists, mentalists & cardicians in the world. On most web pages, the cursor will change shape when your mouse hovers over the link, to give you a visual indication that you can click on the link. On some websites, the color of the link will change. But it's still a link.

When the search engines crawl the web, they take notice of the links they find. They will use links to discover new pages that they need to crawl. They will also use the links to decide on the importance of the linked pages and to give them an idea of the subject matter of the page.

Search engines aren't as intelligent as humans by a long way. This means that they have to rely on these approximations of intelligence.

For instance, for a long time now you have been able to search for the phrase "click here" on Google and chances are that the Adobe Reader download page will come up as the number one site. This is because a lot of sites have Adobe files on them and will put a link up for people without the Adobe Reader. This link will almost certainly say "click here". So Google and the other search engines think that is what the Adobe Reader site is about.

Dumb, huh?

Well, yes. But it gives us some valuable clues about how the search engines work.

What it means is that the "anchor text" is very important for determining the topic of a website or web page.

The anchor text is the bit that's usually blue underlined on a web page and that is clickable to go to the new site.

Sometimes you have some control over the anchor text, sometimes you don't. A lot depends on who puts the link on their page and whether or not you are able to influence what they put.

For instance, if someone is linking to your site from their blog, chances are that they will put whatever text comes to mind on their musings and then highlight a few words before pressing the Link button and putting on the link.

Tutorial : Polished Wood Text Effect

This tutorial will explain a simple way to create a polished wood like text effect, using layer styles to give the beveled look, and a couple of filters to create the texture.

The Final Result

Notes:

the software used in this tutorial is Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended

the size of the final result image is 1024 * 768

you might want to check the Basix Page to see some useful topics on dealing with Photoshop basics, such as loading palettes and some shortcuts.

Step 1:

- Open the Background. image, and create your text with the color #ef9c00. The font used is Mabella, and the size is 450px.

Step 2:

Double click on the text layer to apply the following styles:

- Drop Shadow: Change the Color to #664d24. Remove the check next to Use Global Light, and change the Angle to 7. Also, change the Distance to 16 and the Size to 10.

- Inner Shadow: Change the Color to #4c3a28 and the Size to 18.

- Bevel and Emboss: Change the Technique to Chisel Hard, the Depth to 320, and the Direction to Down and the Size to 20. Also, check the Anti-aliased box, change the Highlight Mode color to #c8b18c and the Shadow Mode color to #dfb99a.

- Contour: Change the Contour to Gaussian, and check the Anti-aliased box as well.

The text should look like this:

Step 3:

- Create a new layer on top of the text layer and call it “texture”.

- Press the Ctrl key and click on the text layer’s thumbnail (icon) to create a selection.

- Set the Foreground color to #ef9c00 and the Background color to #52443c. Make sure that the “texture” layer is active (selected), and fill the selection with the Foreground color (#ef9c00).

Press Ctrl + D to get rid of the selection.

Step 4:

- Go to Filter -> Render -> Fibers, set the Variance to 16, and the Strength to 4.

- Go to Filter -> Sketch -> Chalk and Charcoal, change the Charcoal Area value to 6, the Chalk Area to 6, and the Stroke Pressure to 1.

- Go to Filter -> Sketch -> Chrome, change the Detail value to 0, and the Smoothness to 10.

- Change the “texture” layer’s Blend Mode to Soft Light.

- Go to Image -> Adjustment -> Levels, and change the Shadows value to 20.

- This will make the texture colors more vivid..

Step 5:

- This step is optional, but it helps set the colors of the final effect with the Background. So go ahead and create a new layer on top of all layers, and with the Foreground and Background colors are still as in Step 3, create a Radial Gradient form the center of the document to one of the corners.

- Change the layer’s Blend Mode to Multiply, and the Fill value to 10%.

And that’s it!

PHP is an object oriented scripting language. What does that mean? It means that we have a great way to organise our code and a great way to re-use chunks of code.

The whole point of an object oriented language is to make everything better. The main problem is that object oriented PHP is a difficult concept to grasp if you have never used it before.

Why use object oriented PHP at all?

In times gone by before the days of object oriented PHP, everything would be put into functions. Each function would be a chunk of code that completes a task and you call it from elsewhere in your code, you could send it values, variables etc. Now functions are all very well, and are great for organising small projects but when you get into larger projects you will start running into problems.

Object oriented programming really shows its strengths when you start to build bigger, more complex projects. Mass organisation becomes easier and more robust. Teams of developers can operate independently with little fear of interfering with each others variable names. This kind of robustness simply isn’t possible using functions.

How to use object oriented PHP

Object oriented programming revolves around classes. Classes are basically the containers for your functions….Except to make things a bit more complicated the functions aren’t called functions in object orientated PHP, they are called methods.

Classes are created in much the same way as functions are in non object oriented PHP except instead of the keyword ‘function’ we use ‘class’:

You can then use your class within your code by creating a new instance of it:

Now obviously our class doesn’t do anything because we haven’t added anything to our class but we have created a basic class.

How to make the class do something

In order to make the class do something we need to add a few things to it. We need to add variables(called properties in OOP) that we can use and functions(called methods in OOP) that will do the work for us.

In Object oriented we usually have two standard functions at a minimum. These two properties are the setter and getter functions.

All this probably looks a bit confusing but its all really quite simple. It all looks confusing because of $this->…..$this is simply a built in variable that points to the current object. PHP knows exactly what to do when it comes across this.

Lets use our PHP class

Now we have a fully functioning class, one that actually does something. So how do we use it? We create an instance of the object in the servers memory:

$steve = new first();

We now have two handles to our class. Both use the same class, just a different instance of it. Seeing this it slowly becomes clear how much simpler your code could become. You can use the same class as many times as you like and just set different handles to each instance and do different things to each instance. For example we can set a different name to each one:

$steve = new first();

$andy-> set_name("Andy Kay");

$steve->set_name("Steven Smith");

Now this code doesn’t actually display anything on the screen but we have set two objects up and set the names of the two objects. It should be noted that $andy and $steve are completely separate objects, the only thing that relates them is that they use the same class but they are completely different objects in the eyes of PHP.

How to get at the results?

When accessing methods and properties of a class, you use the arrow (->) operator. So to get at our names that we set earlier:

These are the basics but as you become more involved you will realise the power of OOP. If you want to get anywhere in PHP you need to be using an object oriented approach.

Is there a greater perversion of Scripture than to attribute such characteristics to God? Today, many think that the electric chair or hanging of a person who has killed many is inhumane though it takes only a few seconds; but these same people see no inconsistency in believing it is just for God to torment the same person, even if that person has never heard His word, with a torment which they say is much worse than the few seconds would be and this torment by God will not last only for a few seconds but for an endless eternity.

More Cruel And Sadistic Than Any Heathen God: THE CALVIN GOD, which is believed in and worshiped by many, is a God many times more evil, more cruel and sadistic than any heathen god. Before the Calvin God made the world, He rigged the outcome and chose to make most of mankind to be lost before He made them. He even made it impossible for them to believe, but will torment them forever for not believing. The torment by the worshipers of heathen gods soon end with death of the ones being tormented; but Calvinism teaches God made most men, many millions, just so He could torment them without end for eternity "for his good pleasure."

Typically, Lake Victoria is always crowded in the holiday season. In a trice the number of inhabitants of a small town on the shores of this lake could rise to ten times that. Holiday season is always inconvenient for local residents, especially Sheriff Julie Forester (Elizabeth Shue), who must always be alert to avoid people from the usual problems that arise. This time there are others with Lake Victoria. Problems usually stay there but this time increases with a problem that is much more severe.

Suddenly the lake in the city was so full of human predators of fish. The victim began to fall and to convince tourists not to go near the lake is also not an easy task. Sheriff Julie had only one choice. He must destroy the man-eating fish as soon as possible or will be increasingly falling victim.

Tutorial : Graphics in VB.NET Part 4 - Strings

In this 4 parts long tutorial series I will introduce you to graphics in VB.NET. The four parts is meant to be in order so I recomend you to read them in order to be able to understand the later parts.

Draw a String

We can use the Graphics together with DrawString to draw a string on our image, to do this we need to enter the parameters(of course there's options here but I'll show this way): String, Font, Brush Color, X-position and Y-position. The thing that maybe is unknown for you is the font type.

One way to create a new font is to use font family, size, font style and unit. Like so:

The font family is here Times new roman, the size is 28 in the unit point(last parameter) and the text will also be bold.

Back to DrawString, the example below will make the background white and print "Message to write" in black on the background:

The code is pretty simple to follow, first we declares an image and a graphics to it and paints the background white.

Then it's storing all required values in variables and then prints it out.

The result will look like this:

Strings' Pixel Length

If we want to write another string in relation to one string or want its last part to be at a certain position we need to know how the string will be when we'll print it on the image. To get the size we're using MeasureString to get the size of as a sizeF value. To use MeasureString we simply uses the string together with the font. The example below is the same as the one above with the difference that this time it will print the text in the middle by using MeasureString:

Notice how I get the size of the string and them take the half difference to the image's size to be the string's position.

This was everything for this 4 part long tutorial series about graphics in VB.NET. Now you should be able to resize your images in the right size, put more images together, change the background color, draw filled and unfilled figures to an image, draw strings to an image where you want it, save an image in different formats etc. Hope you have had fun learning

Fill figures

By using graphics you can use "Fill..." to fill areas with a selected color. The first parameter is which brush you will use. The brush is which color you want to use. Then it's different on different "Fills" how you define the coordinates and size of the area you want to fill. The different possible types of areas are:

If you want to paint the whole background in one color it's probably best to use FillRectangle, I will use that as an example on how to use the "Fills":

What it's do is that it fills a rectangle

All types in the above list works pretty much the same, so by using this you can draw filled forms to images. A good reason to use it is to create a background color as showed above as an example. An example on more then just filling the background can be viewed here below by I by this code:

Drawing figures

There also exists "Draw...", here we have few different types of them. We have 3 types DrawImage(for bitmaps), 2 types of DrawIcon(for icons) and DrawString(which is for strings) and then the rest is figures as the "Fills" were. However there's a lot more "Draw figures" then "Fill figures". The other different is that draw only draws the edge of the figure instead of filling it, this also means you have to replace brushes with pens, for example:

Creating Graphics

A Graphics(the data type) is used to modify images. There's 5 ways to create one but we'll only do it in one of them, we'll create it from an image. Then when we use our Graphics the look of the original image will be changed.

After declaring a Bitmap as we did in the last part we'll also creating a Graphics from that image.

Resizing a Bitmap

The first thing we'll do with the Graphics is how to resize the bitmap. To do tis we're going to use two bitmap (one with the original image and one with the resized one) and a Graphics to do the resizing:

So after using this code we have a 50x50 pixels version of C:\test.jpg stored in the variable Img. What the codes do is to first declare to bitmaps, one from a file and one empty with the dimensions 50 times 50. After that it declares a Graphics with a Graphics from the empty image since it's that one we want to modify. Then we set the quality the Graphics will use when scaling/rotating its image which is what we'll do later. And then we're resizing the image from the OriginalImg. At the end we just dispose the graphics.

What we're actually doing is drawing the image

Merging and Adding Images

DrawImage can be used for more things then just resizing an Image, since it can draw an image on another image. So you can use it to add an image to a be a part of another or add many to the same image. If you don't want to resize the image you use you can instead use DrawImageUnscaled, then you don't have to add its size since it uses the same as it already has.

This example below shows how to use four images to make 2x2 image collage, since the test images I'm using is not a good size for this I wrote a function (resizeImg) which resizes the images to a good size, this function works exactly as the resizing we did above:

So in the example I first declared a Bitmap which will store the result of the merging, then a bitmap array where I then store four images(from files) after resizing them with the function. Then after creating a Graphics for the "result bitmap" we draws the images at the right coordinates using DrawImageUnscaled since the bitmaps already have been resizes.

I used the four Windows XP example images and then I got this result:

So by using this you can merge images at the side of each others but by just edit the coordinates you can add them at top of each other. This was all for now, in the next part I'll show how to use graphics together with colors to draw images without needing any images.
