The objective was to provide research-based insights from two groups of respondents as to their perceptions, preferences and desire to purchase Chinese – influenced Western dress.

Design/methodology/approach – Ten images of models in designer clothing were selected that varied in degree of Chinese influence. College students from a US and a Chinese university, numbering 55 and 56 respectively, were asked to respond by ranking each image to discern their perceptions of ethnic influence and their preferences for and desire to purchase each of the ten images. Responses were compared and analyzed.

Findings – A conclusion based upon analysis of responses was that degree of Chinese influence was less critical than the aesthetic character of the form itself. Some disagreement occurred in respondent's highest ranked preferences. Regarding preference and desire to purchase, US respondents ranked them similarly, while Chinese students ranked them differently.

Research limitations/implications – The sample was confined to College students with similar majors in the two countries. Limiting the sample in this way offered control in age and interest, but also limited application of results.

Practical implications – This study addressed the perceptions, preferences and purchasing desires for dress with Chinese influence in a cross cultural perspective. Respondents in this study preferred effective design of the whole image and not simply a borrowing of disparate ethnic attributes.

Discovering the differences between Asian and western culture is at first difficult because the definition of "Asian culture" is an extremely broad and varied classification. Truly there are many Asian cultures from the Shinto, Mahayana Buddhist, Capitalist culture of Japan to the Confucian, Buddhist, Christian, Shamanistic traditions of South Korea to Marxist, Buddhist, Taoist, ancestor worshiping China with Hindu, Buddhist, Spiritist Thailand and many other cultures along the way. In reality, it is vary difficult to define a larger "Asian culture" based on the geography. There is simply so much variation within the area both in terms of economic development and in terms of cultural and historical influences.

find that many asian horror films are not so much about whether the ghost is real (if it's a ghost story), an american film will typically question whether a ghost or supernatural being is real but in asian film it seems more like you are just supposed to accept that whatever you see is real and move on with the story of why it's there/what it wants/how they died. I really like that aspect. I find that people with psychic abilities etc are also used in the same way, where they are just "real" not questioned.
Both are gory but I find current western films (with some exceptions) lack a well thought out plot while asian films seem to have more of a plot to them with gore only in some scenes.
I have also noticed that a number of asian "horror" films are actually more comedic and not really meant as true horror, yet many westerners list them as part of their horror favs. I don't believe western films have a good grasp on this whole gore/comedy thing. The film Hatchet was a great attempt at making a film of this nature but if you read message boards about the film you will see that many viewers did not get that it was meant to be funny and said it was poorly acted. Too bad it is a great film.

Older (70's 80's) western horrors are amazing and are actually tied with my love of asian horror, not sure I could pick between the 2. If we are talking current films than asian films win.

Well,I think the difference is a simple one:Asian horror is a lot more about setting the mood and suspense.Yes,they have a really good amount of gore sometimes and the scares are great,but it's the set up that really brings the point home.Western horror it seems,with a few exceptions,is mostly about straight gore,shock and some nudity,with very little set up most of the time.Which is not to say that this doesn't make a good movie,quite the contrary,lol.Many of my favorite horror movies are nothing more than gore fests,with some naked teenagers thrown in for good measure.However,in my opinion,the Asian films have a bit more of an edge to them and therefore they come across as more disturbing and scary.As to which to type I prefer,well I would have to say that while I'm a fan of all horror movies,it's the western ones that really hold a special place in my heart.I grew up watching Jason,Freddy,Micheal,and Leather-face,just to name a few and I still watch them to this day,ha ha.But,I suppose if I was to have grown up watching the Asian movies,then they would be my favorites instead.I guess it's like Albert Einstein said"Everything is relative.",which means we enjoy what we enjoy,lol.Have fun watching whichever movies you enjoy and I hope my answer has been helpful.

asian horror movies are more subtle and psychological. there's less blood and gore, less limbs flying around, no tortureporn, no random teenagers having sex, naked people or other random "scary" things that happen for no reason.

Most Asian movies i've seen have a decent plot, well-formed characters. They're in believable settings. Things usually happen in a house, in the city - making the horror "believable", like it could happen to anyone. They also put more emphasis on ghosts and spirits, dreams, etc. While Western movies put emphasis on murderers, psycho killers, flying limbs, gore, etc. Asian horror tends to be scary in a subtle way, without being over-the-top and cheesy.

Duane, who lives in Japan and studies the culture more closely, does not approve of this behavior. He comments, “It is true that anyone can choose who they want to be with or who they prefer to live their lives with. What bothers me the most is how can you choose one race of men over another without being racist or prejudiced? Most of all, how can you completely turn your back on your own culture and assume that you are welcome into another culture? Just because your skin color is similar, doesn't make you the same. What will you teach your kids? Will you tell your kids that the only good color is white? Now, speaking of hair color, I think the whole thing with Japanese changing their hair color to other than their natural black hair is completely obnoxious. I think Japanese need to find their own unique individuality - be yourself.”

Leon Alexander, a Brazilian who lives in the UK, and has a Japanese girlfriend is concerned too about the lack of originality in Japanese fashion and style these days. He thinks that Japanese pop culture sucks and the only good music comes out of the underground groups. I miss cloth diapers

My little one has been potty trained for about 5 months now and I have to say that I miss the cute cloth diapers that he had. My cousin is pregnant and I am making her some diapers, but that is not going to be the same thing

Washing & Drying Cloth Diapers

Cloth diapers are a great thing to use. They are better for the environment and can save you a lot of money. This article goes over issues surrounding washing and drying cloth diapers and things to consider.

Washing

Traditionally boil washing was the used to wash cloth diapers. This was considered the only way to kill bacteria and is still something many people do, however you can actually get away with washing diapers at 40 degrees. This, however, is not recommended when dealing with newborn babies and the first 6 weeks. In these weeks it is much better to stick to a 60 degree wash. After this time you can then wash at 40 degrees, although it may be a good idea to do a 60 degree wash every so often. Most wraps, however, can only be washed at 40 degrees so if you choose to do a 60 degree wash make sure your wraps aren't in it!

You also have to consider what to use to wash them. You may be using cloth diapers because you don't want chemicals near your baby's skin and thus want to use something eco to wash them in. Eco-balls are a popular choice to use on clothing but from research, AI have discovered that eco balls are not a good choice for dealing with diapers. According to searches on Google, eco balls can potentially damage the diapers.

There are many great eco detergents available but these can be expensive. A better way for you, if you want to save more money, is to use soap nuts. These are placed in a cotton bag and then put in your machine. These are a great way to clean diapers. White vinegar can also be used to help neutralize smells and you can also use tee tree oil for its anti-bacterial properties.

Drying

If you have a concern for stains your best bet will be to dry your diapers outside in sunshine. Sunshine will naturally bleach your diapers and will also deodorize them. If you decide on using a tumble drier be careful as a drier will shorten the lifespan of your diapers. I have found that my cotton diapers have fallen apart fairly quickly as a result of using a drier often and I have had to replace ties often. However I found a drier important because it was the only way I could get them to be soft and also I live in the UK and the weather is never good enough to dry my diapers quickly.

If you have problems with getting your diapers soft but don't want the drier to damage them, you could compromise and half dry them on the line and then put them in the drier for a shorter period of time. Also don't be tempted to use fabric conditioner to soften nappies as fabric conditioner reduces absorbency.

How many cloth diapers you need depends on the age of your baby and how often you plan to wash diapers. You will need fewer in each size as you baby grows. The type of diapers you choose will also influence the number of diapers you need.

Some styles will need changing a bit less often. For instance, pocket diapers have a moisture resistant barrier between the baby and the absorbent insert. This means you can change baby less often unless the diaper is dirty so you will likely need fewer than for a less absorbent option.

If you have a heavy wetter your baby will be on the high end of the number shown. You can extend the absorbency by using a doubler, using two prefolds or using newborn prefolds as doublers for older babies. With my own daughter, I often use a hemp and micrifiber pocket insert combination so she stays dry all night and during long naps. Since I can't always predict her naps, I use this combo a lot during the day and it works great for keeping her dry.

While one size diapers are popular right now, many parents prefer the less bulky fit of sized diapers. Since your baby is likely to only need two sizes and will need only a few of the larges if they happen to get that big, sized diapers offer a great option for parents.

Cloth diapering will save you a lot of money, but the up front investment can be intimidating for parents who are unsure if cloth is the best choice for their families. If you can't afford to invest in all you need all at once, you can start with one day's worth and then add more the next time you get paid. Just take the amount you are spending now on disposables and save it to purchase more cloth once a month until you have the number you need.

You will want to get a few extras to have on hand while you are washing diapers. Nothing is worse than having a sick baby and no clean diapers.

Up to 6 Mos. 10-12 per day
6-12 Mos. 8-10 per day
12-24 Mos. 6-8 per day
Potty Learning 2-4 per day

You will need one diaper cover for about every 4-6 diapers you have. Most covers can be reused a few times by airing them out between changes unless they are dirty. It is always a good idea to have one more cover than you think you need in case one gets dirty at a bad time!

Wool covers can go even longer between washes if they are properly lanolized when they are washed. PUL diaper covers are easily cleaned and dry quickly if the need to handwash one arises between loads of laundry.

Pockets and all-in-ones do not need covers. You will need to have at least 1 insert for each day time pocket style and 2-3 inserts for each night time diaper. Hemp is a great choice for extra absorbency for heavy wetters or overnight.

One Size Cloth Diapers - Never Buy Diapers Again

One size cloth diapers are a popular choice in cloth diapering. Most one size diapers will fit from about 8 to about 35 pounds. Exact size range depends on the brand. With one size cloth diapers you can use the same diapers for an infant and a toddler. This is great if you have two in diapers or if you only want to buy diapers once.

What are the pros and cons of one size diapers?

First, the pros. One size cloth diapers are convenient if you have more than one child in cloth diapers. You can use the same diapers on both children. If you plan to diaper only one child, you will typically save money by using mostly one size cloth diapers. You'll need about 2 dozen diapers in your stash for one child if you wash every other day, more if you have two in diapers or want to go three days between washes. Obviously, using the same diapers as your child grows is less expensive than buying new ones as they change sizes.

Next, the cons. One size diapers are a good option for many parents but they are not always the best option. Diapers, like anything else, will wear out over time. If you wash your diapers about every other day, they will be washed 180 times in a year. So, to last through birth to potty training, a diaper will need to go through over 400 washes. Imagine finding a pair of jeans that would last 400 washes and still look new. Washing diapers does cause a certain amount of wear and tear. Snap diapers will last longer than hook and loop fastening diapers, but no diaper will last forever. If you use a small number of diapers and wash more often, they will wear out more quickly than if you have a large number of diapers and wash less often. If you plan to use the same diapers on more than one child, be prepared to replace some of them for the second child as those same diapers will now be expected to go through hundreds more washes!

Babies come in different shapes and sizes and not all newborns can go straight into one size diapers. I did use some one size diapers on my 6 pound 11 ounce baby, but she fit into them much better at 8-10 pounds. Some kids grow faster, some potty train later. I can get a Wahmies One Size on my 36 pound niece, who is not yet ready to potty train, but there is no way a BumGenius will fit around her substantial thighs.

So, while there is no perfect solution, many parents choose to use about half one size diapers and about half sized diapers. One size cloth diapers are a great option to save you money and storage space, and they are available in several different styles. Sized diapers come in extra small through extra large sizes and different brands fit differently, so you can often find a perfect fit in a sized diaper. Other parents happily use exclusively one size diapers.

The 3rd Fashion in Film Festival titled “Birds of Paradise” and curated by Marketa Uhlirova is now running in venues accross London–among which are the Tate, the Somerset House, the BFI Southbank, and the Barbican:

“The 3rd Fashion in Film Festival is proud to present Birds of Paradise, an intoxicating exploration of costume as a form of cinematic spectacle throughout European and American cinema.

There will be exclusive screenings of rare and unseen films, plus two special commissions as part of the season: an installation for Somerset House by the award-winning Jason Bruges Studio and a London-wide Kinoscope Parlour, an installation of six peephole machines designed by Mark Garside after Thomas A. Edison’s kinetoscopes.

From the exquisitely opulent films of the silent era, to the sybaritic, lavishly stylised underground films of the 1940s -1970s, costume has, for a long time, played a significant role in cinema as a vital medium for showcasing such basic properties of film as movement, change, light and colour. The festival programme explores episodes in film history which most distinctly foreground costume, adornment and styling as vehicles of sensuous pleasure and enchantment.

Under the theme of love, a group of fourteen emerging artists will present and perform their varied works at Dacia Gallery on the Lower East Side this Saturday, December 11th. The presentation will traverse across diverse media such as video, performance, fashion, books, dolls, zines and illustration.
As students in the Body Garment Track in the Integrated Design Curriculum at Parsons New School for Design, they take inspiration for the exhibition’s theme from their core studio titled Love. They describe Love as a “Collaborative collision collage of mammoth love-orgy proportions between 14 creative beings – alive, afoot, and well prepared to be inspired” under the direction of artists and fashion designers Susan Cianciolo and Gabriel Asfour.
The event is from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM at Dacia Gallery on 53 Stanton Street between Eldridge and Forsyth.

t is quite sad to report that Julie Gilhart will no longer be Fashion Director and Senior Vice President at Barneys. Together with Judy Collinson, who will also be leaving Barneys, she championed emerging, often experimental designers in an otherwise often mind-numbing department-store horizon.

What’s more, Gilhart was an early and outspoken supporter of sustainable designers, such as John Patrick Organic and Loomstate, and also, more generally, of sustainable consumption/production practices of good design which followed a realistic tempo for fashion. She often brought Dries Van Noten, an independently owned company and designer, who produces two well-made collections yearly as an example of integrity in design. Gilhart has spoken on the topic of sustainability in design quite extensively, including at the panel Sarah Scaturro and I moderated at Pratt in conjunction with the“Ethics+Aesthetics” exhibition, as well as contributing to our exhibition catalogue. She also spoke at the 2009 Copenhagen Climate Change Conference.
Partially the victim of an incredibly ill-timed over-expansion, Barneys seems to be destined to go down-market or, perhaps more simply in a generic direction. This decision seems an ill-advised attempt at temporarily saving their bottom line while in the long run diluting their brand identity and potentially damaging their bottom line more permanently. (Brands like the Gap and/or American Apparel, albeit completely different in scope, are clear examples of such a downward spiral.)
If that’s the case—and taking away the unique and quirky aesthetic of Gilhart and Collinson from the mix seems to suggest it is—one will be hard-pressed to see why the so-called luxury consumer would shop at Barneys over Net-a-Porter, or, if outside New York, at a department store such as Neiman Marcu

Coming up Tuesday December 7th is the last installment of the Melodrama: Fashion in Film Series curated by Jeffrey Lieber, Assistant Professor of Visual Culture Studies at Parsons the New School for Design.
The series explores “fashion as a key to the melodramatic imagination,” and has so far included Imitation of Life by Douglas Sirk (1959) and Lili Marleen by Fassbinder (1981), introduced by John Epperson and Tom Kalin, respectively. The last film—perhaps the least known of the three—is the 1965 sci-fi The 10th Victim (orginally La Decima Vittima), directed by Elio Petri. The film, which will be introduced by Evan Calder Williams, stars Marcello Mastroianni and Courrèges-clad Ursula Andress and Elsa Martinelli.

The series is presented by the School of Art and Design History and Theory at Parsons, in conjunction with the MA in Fashion Studies.

We all know that fashion is an expression of the zeitgeist – a style or trend can explode out of seemingly nowhere, with disparate tribes and geographies adopting it simultaneously. Fashion exhibitions are no different. The past few years have seen many exhibitions mounted on similar topics (colors, sustainability, glamour, etc). Currently there are two very different exhibitions on display about Japanese fashion. The first is “Japan Fashion Now” at the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology (MFIT) in New York City, and the second is “Future Beauty: 30 Years of Japanese Fashion” at the Barbican Art Gallery in London.
There are some obvious similarities between these exhibitions – both are curated by top curators in the field (Valerie Steele at MFIT and the Kyoto Costume Institute’s Akiko Fukai at the Barbican). Both focus on Japanese fashion designers and celebrate their contributions to the Western fashion system. Both show looks dating back to 30 years ago and pay attention to contemporary Japanese sub-cultures. But that’s it. Their interpretations, exhibition design and overall approaches are radically different.

This post is long in the making. I have been meaning to review the exhibition Body Unbound: Contemporary Couture from the IMA’s Collection at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, as it ties in with themes explored in my Ph.D. on the grotesque in fashion at the turn of the twenty-first century, which I recently completed at Central Saint Martins
However, having not yet been able to visit the exhibition in person combined with the fact that it closes January, I figured for the moment, to at least mention its central theme and participating designers as sketched out in the museum’s accompanying literature:
“Body Unbound: Contemporary Couture from the IMA’s Collection, examines the many ways designers have manipulated, transformed and liberated the female figure. The exhibition will feature ground breaking designs by Rudi Gernreich, Issey Miyake, Junya Watanabe, Thierry Mugler, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Gianni Versace and other avant-garde fashion designers. Body Unbound will explore how these designers used modern construction and unexpected materials to contort, conceal, reveal or mock their wearers.
My interest was recently piqued when I began hearing about a new book called Minimalism and Fashion: Reduction in the Postmodern Era. Having admired the recent minimal designs of people like Raf Simons (for Jil Sander), Jil Sander (for Uniqlo) and Francisco Costa (for Calvin Klein), I was even more intrigued when I realized that the author was none other than Elyssa Dimant, a fellow alumna of FIT’s MA program in Fashion and Textile Studies. After seeing some of the beautiful photographs and reading the glowing reviews in places like NY Magazine and the New York Times, I knew that I had to talk to her. It’s exciting to report on the great number of conferences happening in the field of fashion studies, which helps one grasps the cross-cultural and geographically diverse scope of the phenomenon.
Alessandra Vaccari, an Italian scholar based at the University of Bologna, is organizing a conference in Buenos Aires in conjunction with the new masters launched by theUniversity of Bologna, Buenos Aires. The conference, which is taking place November 11, is organized in collaboration with the Centro Metropolitano de Diseño.

The Textile Arts Center, the founders of which were recently interviewed by Sarah Scaturro in Fashion Projects, is hosting a collaborative exhibition by Kimberly Ellen Halltitled “Virgin Knitters.”
The exhibition is the documentation of a project started in 2007 for which Hall taught a number of people how to knit in exchange for their first project, a scarf. The project was inspired by the Buddhist notion of Wabi-Sabi, which can be partially understood as the appreciation of something specifically because of its imperfections.
That is how Hall explains the project:
“The virgin-knit scarves have both an emotional and aesthetic appeal. A virgin-knit scarf draws in the wearer through the knowledge that the knitter worked hard making it, while the aesthetic appeal stems from the ideas embodied in Wabi-Sabi, a Japanese concept of beauty. The idea that there is beauty and power in an object that is not precision made or the result of years of experience seems an important one today. It’s easy to agree that everything is mass-produced, cheaply/quickly made these days, etc.—an antidote to that can be found in craft. But we often find at the other end of the spectrum is artisanal and
labored handwork that can be a put-off when deciding to learn to make something for the first time.”
Kimberly Ellen Hall is an artist and designer with an interest in the intangible qualities of textiles. She holds an MA in textiles from Central Saint Martins in London, and has designed on both sides of the Atlantic from Hussein Chalayan to Coach

This is the eight instalment of the annual event and it will take place at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur from Nov 2 to 6.

International brands such as Emilio Pucci, Helmut Lang and Halston will also make an appearance at M-IFW’10, which will feature 18 fashion showcases altogether.

Up-and-coming new designers from Malaysia will get a chance to flaunt their creations at the event too.

“It’s a way of helping ‘low-lying’ brands,” says mifa’s chief executive officer Syeba Yip.

Besides promoting the local fashion industry, M-IFW also aims to boost fashion tourism and trade in Malaysia.

“Tourism is a good way of exposing our local designs to foreigners,” says Yip. “Besides going to resorts, tourists who come here will also experience our local fashion scene. Our unique summer dresses are especially popular with tourists.

“We can be like Bangkok, where local designers can earn their money. At the same time, we also want to remind local consumers of our talented local designers,” Yip adds. “This is the time for Asian designers to be noticed by the world.”

Endorsed by Malaysian External Trade Development Corporation or Matrade, the M-IFW also attracts trade and industry members including designers, fashion buyers and lifestyle media from the Asian region, Middle East, Australia and New Zealand.

“This provides good exposure for local designers who will be featured on channels such as Fashion TV (an international TV channel dedicated to fashion),” Yip explains.

Following seven years of success, M-IFW is now poised to propel Malaysia into the hub of Asian fashion industry.

However, Yip admits it can be a challenge.

“There are a lot of fashion students as well as young designers but they are very lost. Plus, the culture here in Malaysia is generally very laid-back. There is just not enough enthusiasm in the fashion industry,” she says.

Yip also lists “attitude problems” as the biggest setback for new Malaysian designers. “Young designers these days are very impatient. Most of them have no training, unlike foreign designers who have gone through internships with fashion magazines and stylists before launching their own labels. Local designers just want to make it big fast,” she says.

“For example, designers like Derek Lam (top New York-based Asian-American designer) did not become famous overnight. He was an assistant for Michael Kors (famed American designer) for four years and he worked for a Hong Kong retail brand before launching his own label,” says Yip.

To aspiring young designers, Yip advices: “You have to put in a lot of hard work, be humble and have a good attitude. It’s all about the attitude, as a good attitude will lead to good networking.”

Meanwhile, M-IFW, which was conceptualised in 2003, is presented by mifa in collaboration with local integrated services provider Maxis for the second consecutive year.

Maxis, which has over 12 million Maxis customers, will offer a custom-made interface connecting all sides of the fashion community as well as unique style contents related to fashion week to its mobile and online devices.

“New technology is driving more people to connect and interact, both online and in the real world. Thanks to Maxis, our designers can now connect with trade professionals and fashion lovers from around the world, and gain access to new and previously untapped markets,” she adds..

Highlights for M-IFW’10 will include the launch of Maxis’ online/mobile fashion portal, a photography exhibition featuring 100 iconic Malaysian personalities by renowned local photographer Bustamam Mokhtar, the annual Malaysia-International Fashion Awards (M-IFA) Gala as well as a charity children’s fashion show entitled Fashion Gives Back for the opening slot.

The Fashion Gives Back exhibition, which will be set up in Café Stelle in Pavilion Kuala Lumpur from Nov 2 for two weeks, is done in collaboration with renowned Malaysian human sculptor Khing Chan. The exhibition is a preview of the art showpieces that Chan will create for the charity auction in June next year.

The art pieces that will be created for the charity auction include 20 boxes comprising life-like figurines of famous fashion personalities such as Bernard Chandran, Karl Lagerfeld, Asian supermodel Liu Wen and Anna Wintour. The figurines will be paired with limited edition items from 20 luxury brands including Tiffany & Co. Further, the signature art piece that will be up for auction is a miniature model of the stage of M-IFW’10. Seated at the front row of the miniature stage will be sculptures of famous international and Malaysian personalities, including our current Prime Minister.

The bangles are a decorative ornament that women across India-Pakistan have been wearing for centuries. Indian textiles industry is a well-established with showing strong features and a bright future. In fact, the country is the second biggest textiles manufacturer worldwide, right after China. India ranks on the second place as regards in production of silk and cellulose fiber and yarn whilst standing on the fifth position when it comes to synthetic fiber and yarn.
Indians have well understood the importance of staying one step ahead of developments in the world economic environment. The industry is now preparing itself to take share of opportunities expected to arise out of the market freed from quota restrictions and other trade barriers. Industry operators are increasingly moving towards modernization and expansion as encouraged by the so-designated Textile Upgradation Fund Scheme implemented by Government.
The local textile sector is now at a critical stage where it should prepare itself to rise and grab the opportunities that are available through liberalization of the international market. Manufacturers however, were caught in inadvertence as new players started to creep on the market at a time when most operators had attention on imminent opportunities coming from a quota-free market. Strategies and policies were mainly targeted towards expansion and modernization leaving more space to domestic players. Now it obviously appear that the latter have had ample freedom to strengthen them and they are now more prepared than export-oriented companies.
Lack of competition is eroding enthusiasm, impacting on activity on the European and USA markets. With the removal of quotas and similar trade barriers, observers expect the market to provide new opportunities with evaluations reaching S$1.4bn for towels and US$1.8 in bed linen. China's impressive production capacity and its growing strength compelled Europe and USA markets to some serious reflections. To bring a halt to massive invasion of their products, EU and USA have imposed trade restrictions, which also encourage retailers to review their sourcing strategy through diversification out of China. Now, undoubtedly India has good cards to play. With traders realizing the threat of relying on a single manufacturing source such as China, India could do well in proposing a valuable alternative to buyers on the international scene, but this is only possible through an adequate and appropriate development strategy and macro-economic policy.
In that view, many manufacturing companies in India are rushing towards expansion and modernization options. Manufacturers are having recourse to fund raising programmes pushing EPS to higher growth, dissolving equity on its way. Business collaborations with foreign players, creation of buying offices and Government's effort to enhance quality production and export are many visible signs of Indians coming into force on the global market.
Geared with expanded capacities The new opportunities have carried along Indian home-textiles manufacturers in the expansion strategy direction. The Textile upgradation fund has helped many such operators to increase capacity during the last three fiscal years. Such expansion strategies have not only had an impact on production volume, also assisted companies in better providing customized products.
Value addition - route to higher price realizations Terry towels coming from the Indian factories accounted for almost 21% of the world market. With another 19% share in the bed linen market, India stands as a quality supplier to the USA. Indian products are more focused towards innovation and quality. Visible efforts in quality improvement, innovations through R&D programmes, and other value-added features bring a whole new dimension to the Indian products. In turn this resulted in higher profit as compared to other regional producers.
Customized and high-value added products are generally not affected by change in market parameters. As such, there were no exceptional price fluctuations on Indian markets during quota removal period. But such was not the case with other regional competitors' products, such as China, where prices were cut down significantly favoring buyers.
Higher competition with neighboring country China reacted to quota removals by invading the US market with its textiles production. The US had no other choice than to re-introduce trade barriers to calm down the situation encouraging traders to diversify purchasing options and thus giving India an unexpected push on the global market.
The situation is not completely in the pocket for India, however. It should remain on its guards as its neighbors start to embark on similar global adventure with an enthusiasm and motivation packed attitude. Pakistan and Bangladesh are growing at fast pace, shortening the gap with India in an impressive manner. In the last 3 years Pakistan exported 4 times more pillowcases to USA than India! Pakistan, to note, is among the most important cotton producers worldwide and has been blessed by preference agreements with EU and US even during the quota-imposed periods. Pakistani Government has understood the game and is encouraging development through implementation of a 6% R&D aid programs. Others, like Turkey are also in the race.
Budget Measures Technology Upgradation Fund (TUF) increased toRs5.4bn from its previous Rs4.4 bn
Interest subsidy provision on term loans available for those in the handloom field has been increased from Rs2.0bn to Rs2.4bn
Excise duty has been reduced by half on all artificial fiber yarn and is now at 8%
Import duty reduced from 15% to 10% on all artificial fiber yarn
Impact of Budget Decrease in excise duty on artificial fibre has been implemented to favor cheaper production costs and ensure competitiveness on export market.
SSIs are expected to grow further with interest subsidy on handloom sector loans.
The TUF, with its interest subsidy, provides textiles operators with interesting funding plan for their expansion and development strategies. Textiles parks creations will undeniably help in boosting the overall industry. 10 dedicated areas have already been identified and 7 of them already sanctioned. A special Scheme for Integrated Textiles Parks is meant to help in realization of such objectives.
Sector Outlook The future of the textiles industry seems to be bright in all aspects. As such Government places all its trust and relies sector for its strong 'employment creation' capability, more precisely in the garments manufacturing side. Lowering tax burdens on companies will play an important part in cutting down production costs and boosting competitiveness, increasing ability to tap high-volume orders from the global market. Modernization would enable companies provide quality and volume solutions which is in constant demand by international buyers.
Industry Wish List A reduction of 5% in the customs duty on manufacturing inputs for textiles machines. The rate is currently between 10% and 15%.
Textiles products would continue to carry the specific duty imposition, which may be extended to other SAFTA member countries.
Reduction from 15% to 10% on customs duty imposed on synthetic fiber.
Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) is targeting elimination at 100% of all taxes on apparel exports.
Positives Aspects The Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme (TUFS) pushed an additional 10% capital subsidy in acquisition of processing machines; with a view to help in expansion plans. Processing sectors are expected to reap the benefits of such a measure in the long term.
Union textiles has exposed a White paper, named Vision 2010 where it gives clear indications as regards its objectives and targets concerning the US bn export market.
Operators are increasingly considering consolidation methods to strengthen production capacity, which would put them in better position on the global and free market. As such, mergers and takeovers are currently very frequent with companies tying up with smaller one to tackle global challenges.
However, continuing TUFS have been stopped after March 31, 2007 by the Textiles Ministry. The ministry has asked the TUFS nodal agencies and banks not to process further new loans with instant effect.
As per the sources, the estimated budget provision set for reimbursing the interest subsidy for the TUFS loans for the fiscal 2006-07 was only Rs 535 crore, but the required funds for the subsidy is about Rs 1,515 crore, which comes to three times higher than the set provision.

Only twenty four years and she is ready to take over the catwalks in Paris, Milan and New York, Maria Belal is an ambitious young Pakistani designer with vision. A graduate of the Pakistan School of Fashion Design, Maria launched her label ‘Maria B’ in Lahore back in March 99. Right after the fashion show, she opened the doors to her new boutique located in the Defence residential area. Her cotton shalwar kameez and embroidered evening wear, all meticulously cut and stitched, were quickly snapped up by trendy Lahoris.

During her four years at the Fashion School, Maria learnt to make patterns, drape and stitch by hand – all that hard work has obviously paid off. Maria’s clothes can be described as chic and modern – they are wearable, well-cut and neatly finished. For the shoot with Meera, she selected outfits off the rack. “I wanted a glamourous look – to depict a lifestyle with a certain image. These are clothes for every occasion; they are laid back and eccentric.” The outfits she has selected – from a cotton sleeveless shalwar kameez to black net culottes to a chiffon sari – embody her look for the modern Pakistani woman in the late 90s.

Unlike other aspiring designers in Pakistan, Maria has been exposed to the international fashion scene early in her career. While still a student, in 1997 she participated in Forcea, a competition in for young designers, in Belgium and walked away with the “Les Etoiles De La Mode” Award. “I had designed some modern, futuristic pieces, but I had used traditional embroideries and indigenous materials. I didn’t expect much, but I did try my best – after all, we were the first batch from Pakistan to participate in this event, she recalls. Maria went home with an award and there was no turning back. She learnt that there was tremendous scope for Pakistani fabrics in the international market and was determined to make her mark globally. As she says with confidence, “I’m a staunch patriot – I want to take Pakistan’s name in the international fashion scene. I want to show people around the world what a great heritage we have. That really is the core philosophy of my business. We want to go into the international market and prove ourselves as a Pakistani brand name.”

Maria’s main goal is to export her outfits abroad – “I want to send haute-couture items such as evening wear, bridal wear etc. to Europe and then eventually to the US.” She knows it is difficult to break into the international market and has given herself ten years to do so. “That is how long it takes for most designers – so it is good that I am starting so young!” She remains undaunted by the global competition and says “you have to aim high – and I do want to get to New York, Milan and Paris one day.”

People sometimes ask me what business a business journal has publishing a style column. The easy an-swer is, “The WallStreet Journal does it, so why shouldn’t we?” but the real answer is, style is a giant business.

How big? Well, we don’t really know.

It’s the industry that employs about 175,000 people in New York City, according to the New York State Department of Labor, and generates an estimated $1.6 billion in tax revenue.

Granted, Indianapolis can’t hope for the same financial return from fashion as New York. But with the recent hire by Develop Indy (formerly Indianapolis Economic Development Inc.) of a fashion liaison, it appears the city of Indianapolis would like to find out how important fashion is to our economy.

Every time I buy a pair of shoes (or five) at Nordstrom, I’m helping to keep the lovely sales staff employed, but there’s more to the business than that. Beyond the retail realm, there are myriad jobs that come with a new textile mill or clothing manufacturer. Recent industry news hints that maybe Indianapolis could carve a niche there.

The Hat World expansion for example, reported June 10 on ibj.com, is poised to bring 571 new jobs to the area.

The Finish Line Inc. has similar growth possibilities, according to Scott Miller, president and CEO of Develop Indy, as does Izod’s IndyCar sponsorship. “[Fashion] can be a bigger sphere than what people here in the Midwest might think,” he said.

That’s where Susan Branco comes in. She is Develop Indy’s motorsports liaison, with a secondary focus in fashion. With this year’s Indianapolis 500 behind us, Branco is now focusing her energy on quantifying the city’s fashion industry and developing a strategy for growing it, something she says no one has attempted before. In order to make a case for developing the industry, she needs to know how many fashion jobs exist locally and what potential there are for new ones.

“We have to figure out how to use our resources to impact the greatest number of people,” Miller said.

Since the fashion scene in Indianapolis is rather spread out, Branco said it’s been a challenge identifying how many industry professionals are out there. I don’t have that exact number, either, but I believe there are enough to warrant the city’s attention. Not to mention the fashion students at the Art Institute, Purdue University and Indiana Business College (now Harrison College) who could be retained as local professionals if there were a place for them to work.

Should fashion be deemed a viable venture for Develop Indy, Branco’s ideas mimic city-assisted efforts in places like Chicago and New York.

“Every city with a good reputation in fashion seems to be home to a major retail headquarters or flagship store, and there are incentives we can offer companies to bring them here,” Branco said. “I have a few specific ones in mind.”

In the short term, she’s considering a city-sponsored web directory for local fashion professionals, similar to chicagofashionresource.com offered by the Chicago Mayor’s Office. The site would make it easy to find local designers, boutiques, manufacturers, events and industry news. But there’s no word yet on who would maintain the database. Chicago’s site is managed by a team of volunteers called the Mayor’s Fashion Council, but Develop Indy doesn’t have any plans to form such a group.

If Indianapolis were to have a site of its own, Miller says, Develop Indy is more likely to follow New York’s lead, where the city teams up with the Council of Fashion Designers of America to achieve its goals. The only problem is, Indianapolis doesn’t have an organization like CFDA … yet.

“If the private sector shows this is an area that could take off, then we’d be open to giving them public help,” Miller said.

From there, things could get really exciting. With city backing, a fashion council could approach private developers about incubator-like studio space (Branco keeps a running list of possible locations), grant money could be raised for growing businesses, and graduating students could have a place to turn for mentorship.

Now that the fashion scene has the city’s attention, it seems imperative to keep it. But that’s not just up to local boutiques and designers. Our city’s ability to attract big employers will have a lot to do with it.

Miller is optimistic. Indianapolis has a lot to offer large operations like clothing manufacturers, he said. Our Midwestern location, work ethic and cost of doing business are all incentives to move from somewhere as costly as New York.•

The 11-minute film that Gareth Pugh showed on Wednesday, the opening day of the Paris collections, was the fruit of much thought and two days of intense filming in London.

Ruth Hogben, trained as part of Nick Knight’s ShowStudio team and the creator of images for Lady Gaga’s world tour, was charged with capturing the essence of the Gareth Pugh aesthetic. Instead of a runway show, this presentation, projected to enormous size in the Paris Bercy stadium, is Mr. Pugh’s fashion tool.

In its bravura, its beauty and its possibility of going viral to hundreds of million of people via ShowStudio and over the Internet, this grand slam in the virtual world poses a question that is increasingly being asked by both designers and executives: Is a fashion show really necessary?

Or will the bi-annual shows in different cities ultimately be replaced by virtual fashion or some other yet-to-be-invented format?

“We just have to press a button,” said Mr. Pugh before the show, although with hindsight he admitted that it was not any easier — and certainly not any less expensive — to take the image option, even if it avoided the “uncontrollable stress” of the live format.

As a concept, he finds the idea of video sequences exhilarating, setting the mood and conveying the essence of his vision, backed up with a look book focused on the clothes.

“The perception is that people aren’t willing to accept something else,” said Mr. Pugh, 29, who has shown films previously — but more recently has given catwalk shows in Paris, where he has been supported as a protégé of the designer Rick Owens.

The process of bringing his team from London to “very foreign surroundings” and everything “relying on the single show” sparked his search for an alternative.

“With a show, a lot rides on that very small amount of time and the whole thing comes down to image,” Mr. Pugh said. “If a model trips or has a problem with shoes, that is the thing that endures. It is liberating for a designer not to have to worry about a show. You can get the models to be even more expressive and do it all in a more concise way.”

“I always think about things in movement,” said the designer, who once studied dance and made the film with a male dancer from the English National Ballet School, alongside Ms. McMenamy.

Yet the feeling persists that backing off from a runway show is a cop-out or a sign of weakness, although mini-movies are increasingly used by big brands to focus on a particular message. The series of Lady Dior films, starring the French actress Marion Cotillard, are astute marketing tools, particularly for regions like Asia — highlighted in the recent “Lady Blue Shanghai” by David Lynch. They complement the live Paris runway shows, excite and inspire an audience and set a tone and an image.

But for Ms. Hogben, in the Gareth Pugh film and in other visual work she has done for ShowStudio, the concept is not so much to grab attention as to arouse emotion.

“I spend my whole world and whole life thinking about films to make in the fashion genre,” Ms. Hogben said. “I follow my own heart and I hope that if I am successful, film can become an alternative to showing clothes.”

The filmmaker says that she is “completely led by Gareth’s designs. I try to make a representation of every piece of fabric, every shape and sculpture. I am trying to convey Gareth’s world. I play with scale, physically some parts are quite claustrophobic. There is a lot of freedom, depth and space — a vast, endless infinity of the world. This season it is very varied indeed.”

For both designer and filmmaker the optimal word is “emotion.” And that is at the heart of the issue about whether the screen can contribute to fashion, rather than just reflect it.

There is a general feeling that after a quarter of a century of catwalk shows, with zombie-faced models walking up and down, with no interaction between clothes and audience, this system is coagulating fashion blood rather than making pulses race.

While the shows from John Galliano and of the late Alexander McQueen in the 1990s were unforgettable experiences, from liaisons dangereuses of historic figures to disturbing suggestions of a lunatic asylum, those creative expressions were essentially fashion astheater.

The digital camera and the Internet changed everything because even exceptional shows could only be instantly relived as still images on Style.com or as video clips.

Shoppers bustle about Columbia’s clothing stores marking the start of this year’s Holiday shopping spree. Most people think of clothes they purchase as far-removed from this community; national brands manufacturing pieces in far away places. However, there is a community of clothing designers right here in Columbia.

Sift through the racks at Columbia’s Maude Vintage and you can find more than 40 local artists. It’s home to Leroy Fishstix, a clothing line with tags that say it’s “Printin’ and grinnin’” on second-generation clothing. Its creators Felicia Leach and Tom Sasseen screen-print designs onto cardigans, flannel shirts and anything in between.

“It’s got a very Midwestern feel with things like animals and cowboys and stuff with horns.”

The couple started the line three years ago. Leach says she’s been screen-printing for a long time and she taught the art to Sasseen. She has a degree in printmaking. Leach says they create their designs in their home studio and each piece is unique.

Every single shirt that we make basically that’s the only shirt of that in existence. Yeah, it might be printed on something that you could have bought at some other department store but we take that sort of thing and we put different prints and colors and etcetera.”

Sasseen says a friend who deals in vintage and reclaimed clothes gave them recycled clothes to print on. He says their clothing matches the current fad of people seeking out vintage pieces.

“They appreciate the fact that they can get original you know interesting prints on something other than a t-shirt.”

Local shoppers have taken interest in Leroy Fishstix. The couple says they’ve sold a lot of shirts over the past couple years.

“It’s nice to see this stuff out there. To see that it’s gone beyond just the scope of our friends or our house.”

While Leroy Fishstix reinvents recycled garments, another Columbia designer sews garments.�

Leanna Grove is the woman behind Prayer Grove, a clothing line with proceeds that extend beyond Columbia’s community. Grove says she wants to bring attention to women in developing countries who use their skills and talents to support themselves and their families.

“I want people to kind have an outward look on life that’s not just consumerism but it’s like using other women’s gifts to like give sustainable economy to themselves is really important. There are people all over the world that don’t have that.”

Grove says she uses the craft of sewing that she learned when she was young to bring her cause to life. She sews dresses, shirts, scarves and skirts that channel patterns and colors from the past.

“I started just sewing like mini dresses from the seventies and so I mean literally it’s vintage. The cloth is not unless it’s repurposed but it’s vintage.”

Grove says she began Prayer Grove this past summer. She dedicates her Fridays, which is her day off from work, to sewing. Grove says that being a clothing designer in Columbia is more than just creating garments to sell.

“I feel like it’s more of an art here. It’s more of an expression for people.”

Grove says she feels more linked to the community through her work with Prayer Grove.

“It’s an expression of myself and it is expression of my passions and I love to share that with people. I feel like I have a connection greater to Columbia because of that.”

Grove sells her garments at Maude Vintage as well as on her Web site. Thirty percent of the profits from each piece she sells online and 10 percent in store goes to a Central Asian Non-Governmental Organization that works with women in developing countries.

Back at Maude Vintage, owner Sabrina Braden sorts through a pile of repurposed clothing as an employee rings up customers. She says customers purchase these local pieces and have made these artists’ sales successful.

“I think people see the value in making things for themselves or buying things that are unique or were hand-made by someone else that are from their community.”

Maude Vintage sells more than 40 local artists but Braden says she hopes that number continues to increase into the future.

“We have room for more, I welcome more all the time. I think it will keep on a growing pattern with what with see with what people can make and do.”

Designer Sonia Noel is pushing for people here to “go local” in their fashion choices saying that if one item is taken from a single designer, the industry would get the kind of jumpstart it badly needs.

“Just buy one designer piece… it is all we are asking for,” Sonia said on Wednesday at a press conference to launch Designer’s Market. The market is an open space, which would be set up at the Pegasus Hotel tomorrow, for designers to interact with the public, in addition to offering items from their collections at affordable prices.

From 9 am to 9 pm, interested persons can gather at the hotel to mingle with designers; sample their portfolios/catalogues and view the collections. Sonia emphasized how critical “at home” support is, but also pointed out that the majority of designers have no outlet to market their clothes.

Sonia said she is optimistic about the industry based on the success of fashion weekend, and explosion of fresh talent in recent years. Still, she said designers here need the support to press ahead and develop the industry into a competitive and sustainable business in the region. “Don’t just talk support, put your money where your mouth is,” Sonia charged.

She said that people make fashion decisions everyday whether they chose to accept it or not. “When you pick out a shirt or a tie and or a particular accessory, it is a fashion decision,” she argued saying that people need to stop shying away from the reality that fashion choices are made everyday.

Olympia Small-Sonaram, who recently assumed the position of President of the newly formed Designers Association, called the initiative an avenue for designers to get their clothes sold. She said the public would also get the opportunity to better understand what designers are doing and “aiming for”. She said that the goal is for designers, particularly young designers, to find new markets and build a clientele in the country.

Designer, Christopher Goodridge tied the designer market to tourism saying that it adds to the Guyana Fashion Weekend (GFW) calendar of events. Goodridge pointed to the role GFW is playing in raising the profile of fashion in the country, in addition to promoting Guyana on the international stage. “This event follows what happened at fashion weekend… we are promoting local work, local ideas, local fashion,” he added.

He continued that designers often dig into their pockets and spend money on collections; many of the collections often go unnoticed and hardly receive any local support. Goodridge appealed to the public to look beyond the unveilings of the various collection and support designers here by making a purchase.

Robert Badal, Managing Director at the Pegasus said he readily offered support because of the potential of the fashion market. He noted that promoting local tourism also includes advancing fashion here, adding that initiatives like the designer market brings the country closer to its objectives in the tourism sector. “We are happy to be a part of this process,” Badal said.

Afford ability

Asked about the kind of purchasing power the average citizen would have at the Designer’s Market, Sonia said most designers are doing more ready-to-wear lines which are more affordable. She noted that details translate to higher prices, adding that the market would have the affordable lines and the high-end collections.

Olympia chimed in that some designers labour for hours on an outfit and as a result, the price would be above average. She said too that some materials have to be sourced from overseas which includes shipping cost. “It all adds up,, she said, noting that customers can be satisfied that every particular outfit would be “different from the next… unique”. Olympia said too that designers are now catering for “various customers”.

Speaking on the idea behind Designer Market, Sonia said, many designers are carving markets and home is a good place to start. She said some are fortunate to have immediate sales after the collections debut, but some face challenges. “I’ve received positive reports from many designers after fashion weekend, and some of them are almost sold out”.

Designer’s Market is expected to be a regular feature on the monthly calendar of GFW events. From January, the market is scheduled for every third Sunday of the month and until a new venue is announced it would be facilitated at the Pegasus Hotel.

Here is my conundrum…It’s the end of November. Winter is coming. I live in a cold climate. Even on the days when the temperature is hovering in the 50s my toes are getting cold. And it’s kind of weird to sport open toes after a certain calendar date. I’ve begun to notice people looking at my feet when I’m standing in line at Starbucks. Are they admiring my shoes or are they thinking that I’m crazy for not completely covering my feet? But I love my peep-toe booties! They have become my go-to footwear. By the time the weather improves enough to wear open toe shoes again we’ll be looking at bright colored sandals and flip-flops.

The designs can either be embroidered onto the fabric, woven on to the fabric, silk screened, or ironed onto the fabric to create a desired look. Some images that have been used to enhance an article of clothing range from a simple design on front of a T shirt to a famous printing that has been woven into fabric creating a colorful piece of art that one can wear.
