A/B testing, split testing or bucket testing is a method of marketing testing by which a baseline control sample is compared to a variety of single-variable test samples in order to improve response rates. A classic direct mail tactic, this method has been recently adopted within the interactive space to test tactics such as banner ads, emails and landing pages.

Significant improvements can be seen through testing elements like copy text, layouts, images and colors. However, not all elements produce the same improvements, and by looking at the results from different tests, it is possible to identify those elements that consistently tend to produce the greatest improvements.

Employers of this A/B testing method will distribute multiple samples of a test, including the control, to see which single variable is most effective in increasing a response rate or other desired outcome. The test, in order to be effective, must reach an audience of a sufficient size that there is a reasonable chance of detecting a meaningful difference between the control and other tactics: see Statistical power.

As a simple example, a company with a customer database of 2000 people decides to create an email campaign with a discount code in order to generate sales through its website. It creates an email and then modifies the Call To Action (the part of the copy which encourages customers to do something - in the case of a sales campaign, make a purchase). To 1000 people it sends the email with the Call To Action stating "Offer ends this Saturday! Use code A1", and to another 1000 people it sends the email with the Call To Action stating "Limited time offer! Use code B1". All other elements of the email's copy and layout are identical. The company then monitors which campaign has the highest success rate by analysing the use of the promotional codes. The email using the code A1 has a 5% response rate (50 of the 1000 people emailed used the code to buy a product), and the email using the code B1 has a 3% response rate (30 of the recipients used the code to buy a product). The company therefore determines that in this instance, the first Call To Action is more effective and will use it in future sales campaigns.

In the example above, the purpose of the test is to determine which is the most effective way to impel customers into making a sale. If, however, the aim of the test was to see which would generate the highest click-rate - i.e., the number of people who actually click onto the website after receiving the email - then the results may have been different. More of the customers receiving the code B1 may have accessed the website after receiving the email, but because the Call To Action didn't state the end-date of the promotion, there was less incentive for them to make an immediate purchase. If the purpose of the test was simply to see which would bring more traffic to the website, then the email containing code B1 may have been more successful. An A/B Test should have a defined outcome that is measurable, e.g. number of sales made, click-rate conversion, number of people signing up/registering etc.

Dont quit your job now.
Find a cofounder. If you are from a technical background(Hacker), find a person who can sell and collect money from your future customers(Pirate). If he doesnt have a job now, he can take care of the company formation and other works while you can support him continuing in your present job.
Talk to your family about this. Please note that the social status of entreprenurs are very low in India. They get high status only when they succeed. If you have financial commitments, finish it before resigning from your job. You should start your company with a clear and focused mind.
Make an emergency fund. 50,000 rupees per year for the next 3 years. It takes minimum 3 years to build a good company.
Don't take an office. Don't recruit employees. If you are doing a business it should be a scaling of what you can do alone. See this video

When you are quiting your job, dont burn the bridges. Keep good relation with your existing company.
Register the company and a good domain name. Start working and focus on giving value to your customers.
And remember "People overestimate what they can achieve in one year. But they underestimate what can be achieved in ten years."

Now Google Health service is closing down. At the expense of useless google+, many of google services closing down.

In their blog, google says

Now, with a few years of experience, we’ve observed that Google Health is not having the broad impact that we hoped it would. There has been adoption among certain groups of users like tech-savvy patients and their caregivers, and more recently fitness and wellness enthusiasts. But we haven’t found a way to translate that limited usage into widespread adoption in the daily health routines of millions of people. That’s why we’ve made the difficult decision to discontinue the Google Health service.

Can we expect same paragraph for Google+?, few years down the line,

Now, with a few years of experience, we’ve observed that Google+ is not having the broad impact that we hoped it would. I preferred Picasa over Flickr but Now with G+ integrated Picasa, I dont want to use Picasa with so much social angle to it.

Save Tigers, not Tourism

India’s tiger tourism has not benefited the big cat nor the people living in over 600 protected areas in the country.

There have been studies which indicate that human presence disturb wildlife including tigers especially with relation to breeding. These studies, however, fail to specify whether tourism or those living in protected areas disturb the animals.

It is a gray area which needs further investigation. More so, in light of a public interest litigation filed in the Supreme Court by Ajay Dubey seeking shifting of tourism from core critical tiger habitats to buffer and fringe areas, a view endorsed by National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA).

The tour operators and lodge owners in wildlife areas have strongly opposed the move claiming that it will do more harm than good the tigers and people living in and around these protected areas.

The tour operators argument sound strange to me as they fail to present any evidence of how tourism has benefited tiger conservation and improved livelihood of the locals. Presenting a tribal from Kanha inMadhya Pradesh to showcase tourism has empowered locals is be-fooling. There is no data to show that they have directly shared revenue with any agency for benefit of tigers or locals.

Tour operators pay a ticket charge to enter tiger reserves but the money is charged from tourists. The tourism related revenue generated by the government is mostly used to pay salaries of forest employees, an indirect tiger conservation measure.

Tourism benefit to locals is minimal. Only a few locals living inside or around tiger reserves have been employed by lodge owners or drive vehicles ferrying tourists into the reserves. A vast majority still live in abject poverty even though tigers bring maximum earning for the government and lodge owners through tourism.

Per se, tourism is not bad.

But, the problem is how it is run in and around tiger reserves. Totally, unregulated and at the whims and fancies of foresters and owners of big lodges. There have been ample cases of forest officials increasing the number of permits to allow tourist vehicles inside reserves. Tigers have been allowed to film even when reserve had been officially closed.

I have seen this happen during my visits to tiger reserves in Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and Madhya Pradesh whereas local villagers were treated like theives by forest employees for collecting their basic necessity firewood. Reason, they don’t have money power like wildlife tour operators. It is also evident that government has failed to take action on lodges built in buffer zone of tiger reserves, a prohibited activity under law.

The public interest litigation is an opportunity for the government to enforce some regulation ensuring that revenue generated from tourism helps in tiger conservation and upliftment of poor in over 6,000 villages inside tiger reserves.

The environment ministry needs to quickly notify the eco-tourism rules, which makes sharing of 30 % of revenue generated through tourism with locals mandatory. For the record, a committee headed by former tourism secretary of India Sujit Banerjee had made this recommendation. If required, implementing these rules should be linked with providing Central government funds for wildlife conservation.

I know that tourism guys near tiger reserves are vehemently opposed to the idea and Vishal SIngh of Travel Operators for Tigers (TOFT) is willing to offer peanuts — maximum of five percent.

But, time has come to make them realise their responsibility towards the big cat, which brings high profile tourists willing to pay up to Rs 40,000 for a night, and locals, who have co-existed with these tigers for centuries.

For this, if tourism has to be banned for some time from scientifically defined core critical tiger habitats, it will not be a bad idea. It may be the way for the first pay back from the tourism.

Code Igniter - Setting Secure flag for Session

Php5 gives you ability to set secure flag with function setcookie, but codeigniter doesnt.

see 6th argument to setcookie.

It saves session with Encryption and using md5 but still security softwares objects your website because
non secure session.

I was searching for a while do it good way, but didnt find it, so I came up with this hack.

In CI_HOME/system/libraries/Session.php

Basically CI passes $secure = 0 as a hardcoded argument to setcookie function.

I set this value to 1. one can write some more code to make it configurable thru CI config file.

With $secure=1, Session cookie wont be saved for domains accessed with http://urdomain.com

it only works with https://urdomain.com

Let me know if its issue or better way doing this.

Nokia X3-02 - Enabling Wifi access on FB, Opera Mini app

I recently bought Nokia X3-02, its great touch n type from Nokia.

It has Wifi, 3g/2g to access internet. I love to read twitter, facebook and hindu frequently so this is quite useful for me.

I downloaded FB app and Opera Mini preinstalled. but with both I was not able to access internet.
It was trying to use GPRS which was not enabled on my phone, I was not able to configure Wifi setting.

I discovered it after some efforts.

You go to menu -> Settings -> Configuration -> Personal Settings -> Add New

select Streaming option.

it will create My Streamin.

This is half work done.

Again

You go to menu -> Settings -> Configuration -> Def. Config. sett.

>>choose personal Config.

You go to menu -> Settings -> Configuration -> Def. in all apps.

activate default in apps.

You go to menu -> Settings -> Configuration -> Personal Settings -> Add New

select Web option.

Network On Ubuntu disabled (Solved)

Suddenly network on my ubuntu laptop got disabled due to poweroff on battery discharge.

I searched at various places in menu but didnt get how to work it out.

If your network manager is not working, and says unmanaged, or Networking disabled in ubuntu 10.04 try this fix
Open the terminal from Applications menu -> Accessories -> Terminal run the following commands

service network-manager stop

rm /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state

Only thing here is I didnt need to reboot to make it work. it just workd.

Ubuntu : Splitting big files in smaller parts using Rar and Joining back(solved)

I wanted to send a big ~40MB doc file via email to a friend. but as we know, there is limit on size of attachment which is 2MB-20MB, varies across different email providers.

I tried to compress file using zip, targz, but size changed minutely. So I remembered some of downloads I get in form of multiple rar files and which get into single file on uncompressing.

I was on ubuntu, I knew thing work smoothly on windows with WinRAR but never uses such thing on linux. I always used zip, tar.gz.

After quick search on google, I got the thing.

Installed rar on ubuntu using;

sudo apt-get install rar

sudo apt-get install unrar ( though unrar is not needed)

To compress file(s) to split rar archive know which directory you want to compress, I used /home as an example

rar a -m5 -v5M -R myarchive /home/

Let me break the above command down

rar - starts the program
a - tells program to add files to the archive
-m5 - determine the compression level (0-store (fast)...3-default...5-maximum(slow))
-v5M - determine the size of each file in split archive, in this example you get files with size 5MB (if you wanted files of 512kB size you would write -v512k)
myarchive - name of the archive you are creating
/home/ - is folder of the files you wish to add to the archive

This worked pretty well for me. but now reverse part was tricky. I tried unrar x *.rar. it didnt work.

someone suggested on forum to use "e" option, so I did

rar e part1.rar

and this single command, picked up remaining 3 parts. and formed original file in a moment.

same works with

unrar x part1.rar

while

unrar x *.rar doesnt work. I think first part itself has meta information about other rar parts.

Online Bike Insurance renewal for lapsed policy

I am proud owner of Honda unicorn, which I bought in 2004, first big purchase from my own hard-earned money. I lost my insurance papers somehow and was got caught by police twice and got fined.

so I was desperately looking to renew it, when I enquired with friends and with bajaj, they said I have to go to local insurance office to get it renewed as policy is lost or expired. However after long search, I couldnt find insurance office nearby.

But luckily I had information about my last policy, like date at which it expires and policy number.

ICICI lombard & bajaj offers online renewal.

I tried to do it thru bajaj first but I got stuck somewhere it between and asked to approach local office.

Then I decided to try ICICI lombard, It has very painful user interface, compare to Bajaj allianz, but it did
serve my purpose, I just keep giving information on each page, finally It shown me my premium amount.

and was asked to pay. Online payment flow also has trick, they dont have Axis bank listed (I think due to competition) which forced me to use my credit card to pay amount.

and after few moment I got my policy in pdf format, they said , they will send hardcopy to my address but they didnt sent it , still waiting for it.
As of Now, I am using print out of soft copy of insurance.

One of my friend it was costly. but for me, Getting Insurance is biggest thing, Now I can drive freely anywhere in city.

I did third-party insurance for Rs. 730, my bike is 7 years old.

Mac - MySQL - CodeIgniter - Issue (Solved)

My CodeIgnited just stopped working with New MySQL server installed on Macbook, Osx 10.5.

following blog post+some my own tricks, saved my lots of effort to make it work.

Mysql & php configs were missing from system, earlier my system used to work with MAMP.

I copied my-huge.cnf (as my m/c has more than 1G ram) to /etc/my.cnf from /usr/local/mysql/support-files/

I copied existing /etc/php.ini.default to /etc/php.ini and did following changes.

The version of PHP that Apple included with Mac OS X 10.4.4 has mysql.default_socket set to "/var/mysql/mysql.sock", before it was "/tmp/mysql.sock". They change it for some security reasons I believe.

The binary version of MySQL from mysql.com use "/tmp/mysql.sock" so one has to change.

I choose to make PHP look for "/tmp/mysql.sock" by setting this in /etc/php.ini.

; Default socket name for local MySQL connects.  If empty, uses the built-in
; MySQL defaults.
mysql.default_socket = /tmp/mysql.sock

I also tried to go the other way by setting this in /etc/my.cnf.

#Name of the socket file to use.
socket=/var/mysql/mysql.sock

Linux Mint 10 - Sound problem (Solved)

We have installed Linux Mint 10 on one of our machines, I chose Linux Mint because its based on Ubuntu and had impressive UI.

but after sometime, got complaint that sound is not working on it. then I rememberd my year long struggle during my college days to make sound working on Redhat-Athlon machine of mine, which didnt work.

Today no one was using m/c, so I just gave a try to make it work. and it worked.

Here is how.
I searched on google..after frantic search for 10-15 minutes. I got following link

I followed advice from someone called "mads"

1. Run
$ cat /proc/asound/modules'
The output shows the modules.
0 snd_intel8x0
1 snd_hda_intel

2. Add the following lines at the end of your alsa-base.conf file:
# The next two lines prevent my sound modules from switching
options snd_intel8x0 index=0
options snd_hda_intel index=1
Save and exit. Reboot to make changes take effect

Use AlsaMixer to adjust volume.

for me
$ cat /proc/asound/modules gave
1 snd_hda_intel

2nd step i followed as it is.
alsa-base.conf is resides in /etc/mod-probe.d/

I rebooted m/c and login welcomed me with Sweet Startup Sound!
lekin picture abhi baki hai mere dost.. I played a song in mplayer and it didnt work.

I thought I might need to do something extra. but just pulling headphone jack out and putting in solved the problem.

Music is now enabled on Linux Mint 10.
