Google Drive tipped to launch with with 5GB free storage, mobile app document editing capabilities

With Google’s long awaited file-synchronisation service Google Drive set to launch within the coming weeks, details are already starting to emerge over what it will provide for users.

A leaked screenshot of the service has indicated that when Google does take the wraps off its Drive service, users will automatically be furnished with 5GB of free storage, rivalling offerings by Box.net and SugarSync, and eclipsing the default 2GB storage limit of Dropbox’s increasingly popular service (the company allows you to add more space via social sharing initiatives etc).

Search giant Google has today announced that its planned acquisition of Motorola Mobility has been approved by the European Commission. The approval has been posted to the Commission’s site here and says that it approved the merger largely because it will not “significantly modify the market situation in respect of operating systems and patents for these devices.”

Symantec offered $50,000 to source code hacker

In January, Symantec admitted that back in 2006, its servers were the victim of a cyber attack. The people responsible for the attack took the source code for a number of Symantec's security software products. Hackers who said they were associated with Anonymous threatened in January to release the source code. However, Symantec said that since the source code was so old, most of the products that are currently being used by customers were not in danger. The one exception was the PCAnywhere product which Symantec later updated with a patch.

In a 2010 revision to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, the US Copyright Office granted an exemption that made modifying copyrighted software legal for the purposes of unlocking phones. Now it looks like the site isn't being endorsed or run by the main Anonymous group after all. On Tuesday, the AnonOps Twitter site posted up a new message: "We have NO affiliation with this site, and by the looks of it, this is a SCAM."

HP announces Open WebOS 1.0, available by September

Well that was fast. HP today announced how developers will be getting access to the WebOS code that they're all after, according to The Verge. Days ago, we saw that CyanogenMod and ClockworkMod Recovery developer Koushik Dutta was talking up the possibility of a specially-built app store for CyanogenMod, which would happily welcome all the apps that for one reason or another have gotten the boot from the Android Market. Koush showed off just that on his Google+ page, where he posed the original question: you can see an extremely early screenshot of the submission page for the “CyanogenMod App Store” below.
