How to update the CM 10.1 NIGHTLY of LG Optimus 2X (SU660)

1. Download the desired P990 NIGHTLY version to update to.

2. Download fix for P990 NIGHTLY, to make it compatible with SU660. Follow instructions to convert P990 rom to a SU660 compatible rom.

3. Download the latest Kowalski Kernel for SU660

5. Copy all files into external SD card and flash them in order (NIGHTLY, Kernel, Fix) in recovery mode.

[Guide] Cyanogenmod 10.1 aka Jelly Bean 4.2.2 on LG Optimus 2X SU660 Korean Variant.

Hey Androiders,

Its been a while I blogged, since I changed my phone to Galaxy S Korean to LG Optimus 2X Korean. I do not know why always I get a Korean variant but, as in my personal experience Korean phones carry the same hardware with little changes than the international version, but the same performance. So the change in the hardware results different android solutions, that you have to suffer a bit to search and try different things and optimize it.

Having said that, let we start the porting of Jelly Bean to a Korean device. Thanks to all developers behind scene who has implemented it so far so good!

The following are required for the successive port of jelly bean to L2X SU660.

1. The Dropbox Folder which has all the installation files.
2. Rooted L2X SU660 Phone. (If not rooted follow the this link)
3. A Windows 7 Machine.

Steps

1. Download all files from the Dropbox Folder.
2. Copy the following files to a External Micro SD. Keep it safe.

2. Go back to the Dropbox folder and find the "Root Tools and Drivers".
3. Install the LG United Mobile Driver.exe
4. Then remove the battery from the phone, by pressing both the VOLUME UP and DOWN keys connect the phone to the PC via USB.
5. In your Windows 7 task-bar, a driver will try to install but it will fail. DON'T PANIC!!
6. Now go to Start and search for "Device Manager"
7. You will see a Other or "APX" is there with a yellow warning icon.
8. Right click it and select the option to install the drivers manually.
9. Now go to downloads folder and extract APX Driver.zip
10. Install the driver manually and again connect the phone to the PC as in the 4th step.
11. Now you will see the driver has been installed.
12. Now go to "Root Tools and Drivers" folder of Dropbox again and extract nvflasher-cleaner-v0.2.zip. Run the flash.bat file.
13. A command window will popup and this process take you to the CWM recovery mode.
14. Wait until the command window says "press any key to continue...."
15. Remove the phone from PC and insert the battery and external SD card which carries all the installation files in step 2.
16. Now switch on the phone. You will see the recovery menu where you can install and flash new ROMs and kernels.
17. In the recovery mode, go to "install zip from sdcard" and go to "choose zip from external sdcard".
18. There you will see all these four .zip files.
19. First flash the ROM. cm-10-1-NIGHTLY-su660-fixed.zip
20. Then the Kernel kowalski-kernel-100p5-oldbl_CM10.1.zip
21. Next the Google Apps for Jelly Bean gapps-jb-20121212-signed.zip
22. In these steps your internal SD card may not be mounted. To avoid the risk, flash the fourth file as well. IntSD-MountFix.zip

23. Now go back, wipe data/ factory and wipe cache respectively.

24. Reboot the phone!

Here we go! Your L2X Su660 will be starting with Jelly Bean 4.2.2 CM10.1! Enjoy!!

Issues

I have tested the phone with the jelly bean, it works flawlessly fine. I can say there are some little issues certainly those wont make any difference, you can live without those additional features :D
The issues are,

1. WiFi tethering seems to be NOT working, I have tried, but I think a fix is coming up soon.

2. A special Jelly bean feature is Photo Sphere. I have tried to flashed in many ways, still the feature is not available for the device it seems! Anyway I will keep an eye on it and update whenever it is available!

[Guide] Root the LG Optimus 2X SU660 Korean Variant

Hi Guys,

Rooting the L2X SU660 is quite simple with only few steps involved(Using a Windows machine).

1. Go to this Dropbox Folder and download all the files here.
2. Install LG United Mobile Driver.exe

3. Extract it and Connect your phone to the PC via the USB.
4. Then take the phone, go to Settings -> Developer Options -> USB Debugging and tick it.
5. In the extracted file, there will be .exe file. Double click and it will recognize your phone.
6. Hit on "Root" and wait for a while. Your phone will be rebooted.

There you go! You L2X SU660 is rooted now!

Flashing Samsung Galaxy S SHW M110S Variant with CyanogenMod 9

Hi Guys!

This blog post is about flashing Samsung Galaxy S SHW M110S Variant with CyanogenMod 9 custom rom.
If you are not familiar with what is happening with this rom I would please you to take a hard look at cyanogenmod.com. This article I written is for an educational purpose. You may face issues with the rom. Lot of configuration issues such as Wi-Fi issues, data activation issues. Yet this is the best solution that you can get for the phone in order to get ICS.

What you need for this flashing operation?

1. The Odin for flashing the phone to Recovery Mode (01_CM9_2.tar file)

2. The CyanogenMod ROM (CM9_M110S_Say.zip file)

3. The Basic Google Apps for the ROM (gapps_ics_404_01042012.zip file)

Download the files by the links attached.

Precautions

1. Please charge your phone up to 70% or more.

2. Understand the phone’s Reboot mode, Download mode and Recovery Mode.

Download Mode will be the Home Button + Power Button.
Recovery mode will be the Volume Down Button + Home Button + Power Button.

Take a big breath before doing it, Please understand this process may brick or semi-brick your phone, but still you can unbrick and flash with the stock rom. Please ask questions if you have any clarifications about the installations.

How to do?

1. Connect the phone into PC. Copy the CyanogenMod ROM (CM9_M110S_Say.zip file) and the Basic Google Apps for the ROM (gapps_ics_404_01042012.zip file) to your phone.

2. Switch off the phone. Remove the battery, re-insert and put the phone into Download mode.

3. Run Odin, when you run the software with the phone connected the Odin will detect a yellow bar with a COM port. Find the button PDA. Click the PDA and select 01_CM9_2.tar file. It will take a few seconds to finish. Unplug the USB and put the phone into Recovery mode.

4. In the recovery mode you will see options like WIPE DATA/FACTORY RESET. Press YES and DO it.

5. WIPE CACHE Partition.

6. Go to advanced and WIPE DALVIK CACHE.

So these steps actually clean your phone off the from the previous ROM / Stock ROM

7. Go back and select INSTALL UPDATE FROM SD CARD.

8. Select CM9_M110S_Say.zip and click update. It will take up to a minute to install.

9. After that repeat that with gapps_ics_404_01042012.zip file.

10. Do it again the 4^th 5^th and 6^th steps again.

11. Reboot now

12. In the first boot of a new ROM it will take a few minutes to load. Be PATIENT!

13. Here we go! The CyanogenMod 9 for SHW M110S where you are!

Issues I faced,

1. I could not switch on my Wi-Fi

2. I could not switch on data packet enabler

3. I could not switch on the Bluetooth

4. My camera got a miserable look. Not correctly focusing or capturing.

But I really like the UI, my phone become speeder and smoother than the stock rom. I repeat this is an educational article. Please think twice before doing anything. Believe me you may brick your phone for nothing.

How did I solved issues with Windows 8 – WAMP Server issues

I was not a huge PHP fanatic, yet I got to use it to do my University project. So in that case I was instructed to use WAMP Server for my localhost server which in-build with Apache, MySQL, PHP and Web Grind. I installed Windows 8 few weeks ago, but I could not figure out a way which I can install WAMP Server in it. Because the error message says

“Forbidden

You don't have permission to access / on this server.”

But when I type 127.0.0.1 it is working indeed.

So I was thinking with my previous experiences it should something has to be done with the httpd.conf file and the regedit of Windows 8.

Here I how solved the issue.

1. Test the port which Apache runs. Go to WAMP Server -> Apache -> Service -> Test Port 80. It will give a command prompt message whether it is running on port or not. If it is not running on port 80, you can edit the httpd.conf file. Go to Apache and open up the file in a text editor. Go to line 45 and 46 and check whether the correct port number has been entered. Change it accordingly.

2. Let’s see what we can do with the registry editor.

Open console (cmd.exe) and execute

netstat -aon | findstr 0.0:80

to check if the port is controlled by process with ID 4 (System). Otherwise we should kill it (the process with PID != 4) using a task manager.

But what eventually worked for me is to disable a HTTP service of Windows 8:
1) Go to registry editor (execute regedit);
2) proceed to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\HTTP;
3) create a new DWORD param with name "NoRun" and set it to "1" (without quotes);

4) Select the DWORD param according to your OS bit version. I did it with 32-bit;

5) set "Start' param to "0";

Now Reboot!

3. After rebooting, open the httpd.conf again and go to line no 188 and it is a <Directory> tag. Check whether the line 4 of that tag has this -> “Deny from all”. Now change that to “Allow from all” (Without the quotes)

4. Scroll down to line no 231 and see this -> “# onlineoffline tag - don't remove”. See the last line says -> “Allow from 127.0.0.1” Change it to “Allow from all”.

Now refresh and see if the localhost works? I guess it will not work until you restart the services again. Once you restart, you are done!

YaY !! Removed Babylon !

The biggest pain that having Babylon search engine in your Firefox search engine as default. You will get the Babylon results first and that is not useful at all, Google results follows then after and you will not distinguish what are Google's results and what are Babylon's.

I was trying hard to get rid from this for ages. I tried many options. For example I tried removing Babylon plugin from my C drive. That doesn't work at all. I tried changing the search engine option (Next to the address bar), that doesn't work and finally even I uninstalled the Firefox and reinstalled it. Even then that shit followed me in the Firefox.

So finally now I got the solution.

Here are the steps that I did to remove that shit.

1.Type "about:config" (Without double quotes). You will actually get a warning message that to be careful and aware what you are doing. Continue thru !

2. In the filter bar search for "keyword.URL"

3. Double click it for edit.

4. Paste this http://www.google.com/search?q=

5. Refresh it.

YaY thats it ! The crap is gone ! Enjoy !

Drupal-Kubuntu-VerifyingRequirements

Hi guys,

Im a new user of Kubuntu KDE distribution though I have some hands on Ubuntu Linux. Once I installed KDE, installed LAMPP server on it. I used to XAMPP, so I had no trouble with windows installation, but in Linux, permissions got me into a major issue where I could not write into or copy anything into my htdocs folder. So after a more elaborate search on web that with the installation of XAMPP you should give the credentials to copy anything to htdocs.
The code that you have to run in the terminal with sudo grant follows,

$ sudo chmod
777 -R /opt/lampp/htdocs

Now that solved my temporary problem.
After couple of days, I started installing Drupal onto my htdocs. The first two installations steps were fine but in the verifying requirements step there were two unsolved errors.

The error message follows as,

*The Drupal installer requires write permissions to ./sites/default during the installation process. If you are unsure how to grant file permissions, please consult the on-line handbook.
* The directory sites/default/files does not exist. An automated attempt to create this directory failed, possibly due to a permissions problem. To proceed with the installation, either create the directory and modify its permissions manually, or ensure that the installer has the permissions to create it automatically. For more information, please see INSTALL.txt or the on-line handbook.

I was confused and the error because of permission granting, So the previous step just sparked on my mind. What I did was again defined permissions like,

$ sudo chmod 777
-R /opt/lampp/htdocs/drupal/sites

Also do not forget take a copy from /opt/lampp/drupal/sites/default/default.settings.php and paste it to the same folder renaming it as settings.php :)

Done !! The Installation of Drupal went smoother then after !

The Imagine Cup twenty-twelve 1 2 3

The largest student driven technological event was just happened few hours ago at the SLIIT Main Auditorium, Malabe, Sri Lanka “The Imagine Cup 2012”.
I felt so prestige to wear a Microsoft t-shirt helping out people thinking I am from Microsoft. The feeling was nevertheless a life time event. I was accompanied by Praneeth, Dushantha, Amith, Chamal, Dinusha, Ruvini, Milan, Shanika, Randa, Devdun, Shashika ayya, Oshan ayya and missed Zaman and Hasangi.

The Six finalists performed their final windings about their projects in front of massive 300+ audiences; panel of judges included four professionals, academics and fellow students. Three teams from Informatics Institute of technology, Two from University of Moratuwa Faculty of Information Technology, and One from Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka.

The Teams and the Projects follows as,

1. Team “INVICTUS” with the Project “Guide Me on the Go” from Sabaragamuwa University

2. Team “Team Dot” with the Project “FARM @ H2OME” from Informatics Institute of Technology

3. Team “Sharks” with the Project “vLearn” from University of Moratuwa

4. Team “CR Coderz” with the “Project Value Life” from Informatics Institute of Technology

5. Team “Casper Creations” with the Project “arDesign” from Informatics Institute of Technology

6. Team “V360” with the Project “Back2Earth” from University of Moratuwa

All excitement presentations were too awesome. The entertainment event presented by the SLIIT guys was ok. But the hilarious thing is the Nigerian SLIIT students’ traditional dance. They actually danced something that I have never ever seen before. The dance was superb, but the co-ordination was not thereJ.

From 3pm to 7.30pm we were waiting for the results,

The second runners up of the event was Team “Sharks” from FIT-UoM
The first runners of the event was Team “CR Coderz” from IIT
and the WINNER of the night was Team “V360” FIT-UoM with the magnificent concept of back2earth J

Life is life. life is an interesting journey of ups and downs, but how that journey ends, is up to you today.. You see when you fall down, you feel like giving up. When times get tough, it’s not the end. The question is, are you gonna finish strong. The definition of disability is something that will hint to you from being able to something. I think the greatest disability is not having no arms and no legs; the greatest disability is your mind; the choices that you make. The question is, are you gonna make the right choices. Are you gonna make the choice to have your life in its right prospective, Are you gonna make the choice to "get up instead of give up". Are you gonna make the choice to dream big.

There is no greatest disability that we have in our life than to make the decision to give up. Because once you give up then there is no hope. But until you give up there is that hope.

My passion is to encourage people; to inspire people to be all that they can be. I found my purpose, I found my strength and I wanted to find yours. Don’t be afraid of failure, every time you fall down every time you fail, you learn something new, you’re ready for the next one, you’ve learn how not to do something, so then learn from it and move on. Leave what’s behind and press forward. You can only win, if you don’t give up. Go for it. Don’t let anything hold you back. If nothing’s holding me back, what’s holding you back?

No goal is too big, No dream is so far-fetched. It’s big as you can dream it.

There are times in life where you don’t see the purpose or good in your situation. But just because you can’t see it, it doesn’t mean it’s not coming. Who goes to the train station and looks down the railway and says “Aah!! Train’s not here I’m leaving”. You will wait for the train, because the schedule says the train is coming. You have to login into the UEC. Now, go to the Store tab. The following screenshot (figure 14) will show you what you got in it.

You can browse all the images and download and install the image as you want.

Finally you have to instantiate an image that you installed. There are multiple ways of doing it. Use the command line. Maybe that will be slightly a bad idea, because you got cool UEC compatible management tools such as Landscape (figure 7) and etc.

Also you can use ElasticFox extension – A Firefox extension, One of the cool tools available.

· Ubuntu Server Edition Installation

Before the installation,

Make sure that the data of your machine is backed up.
One of the simplest ways to backup a system is using a shell script. For example, a script can be used to configure which directories to backup, and use those directories as arguments to the tar utility creating an archive file. The archive file can then be moved or copied to another location. The archive can also be created on a remote file system such as an NFS mount.
The tar utility creates one archive file out of many files or directories. Tar can also filter the files through compression utilities reducing the size of the archive file.

If this is not the first time an operating system has been installed on your computer, it is likely you will need to re-partition your disk to make room for Ubuntu.

Any time you partition your disk, you should be prepared to lose everything on the disk should you make a mistake or something goes wrong during partitioning. The programs used in installation are quite reliable, most have seen years of use, but they also perform destructive actions.

After backing up your system, you just wanted to insert the ISO disc in order to boot the system via CD-ROM. The boot prompt menu will ask for the language selection. The installation starts with asking for the keyboard layout.

From the main boot menu, you will see the options that what actually can be installed. You can select UEC for the installation. See figure 8.

Once you select UEC, the installer checks whether any of the Eucalyptus components installed or not. Refer figure 9.

There’re five eucalyptus components that you can install, as showed in the figure 10.

Let we take a look at each component and what are the functionalities of each.

A. Node Controller (NC)

A Node Controller is a virtual technology enabled server, capable of running KVM (Kernel Virtual Machine) as a hypervisor. Hypervisor can be called as virtual machine manager (VMM). Ubuntu Enterprise cloud will automatically install the KVM if the user selected the NC for the installation.

The virtual machine which runs on hypervisors and controlled by the UEC called as “Instances”. Not only KVM, but hypervisors like XEN is also supports UEC. But canonical has chosen the KVM as their preferred hypervisor.

Node Controller is responsible to control the life cycle of instances running on the node, NC will runs on each of the node. The NC interacts with the OS and the hypervisor which is running on the node on one side, and also the Cluster Controller (CC) on the other side.

NC queries the OS which is running on the node to determine the node's physical resources such as the number of cores, the size of memory, the available disk space and also to learn about the state of VM instances running on the node and propagates this data up to the CC.

Functionalities of the NC are, NC Collects the data related to the resource availability and consumption on the node and reporting the data to CC and the management of instance life cycle.

B. Cloud Controller (CLC)

The Cloud Controller (CLC) is the front end to the whole cloud infrastructure.

CLC provides an EC2/S3 amenable web services interface to the client tools on one side and interacts with the rest of the components of the Eucalyptus infrastructure on the other side. CLC also provides a web interface to users for managing certain aspects of the UEC infrastructure.
It monitors the various resources in the cloud infrastructure. It decides the cluster will be used for the provisioning the instances. This is called as Resource arbitration. Also it monitors the running instances as well.

C. Walrus Storage Controller (WS3)

WS3 provides a persistent simple storage service using REST and SOAP APIs compatible with S3 APIs. WS3 ought to be considered as a simple storage system in the system.
WS3 works on storing the machine images, storing snapshots and Storing and serving files using S3 API.

D. Cluster Controller (CC)

Cluster Controller is responsible for manage one or more Node Controllers and deploys/manages instances on them.
CC manages the networking part of running instances and on the Nodes under certain types of networking modes of Eucalyptus. Cluster Controller talks with Cloud Controller on one side and Node Controller (NC) on the other side.

E. Storage Controller (SC)

SC provides determined block storage for use by the instances. Elastic Block Storage (EBS) is a service provided by the AWS, is also very similar to SC.
The functionalities of SC are creation of persistent EBS devices, providing the block storage over AoE or iSCSI protocol to the instance and allowing creation of snapshots of volumes.
AoE, “ATA over Ethernet (AoE)” is a network protocol designed for simple, high-performance access of SATA storage devices over Ethernet networks. iSCSI is an abbreviation of Internet Small Computer System Interface, an Internet Protocol (IP)-based storage networking standard for linking data storage facilities.

After you select the cloud installation model, it will ask two other cloud-specific questions during the course of the install:
One is the Cluster name and the range of public IP addresses on the LAN that the cloud can allocate to instances. Figure 11 and 12 will emphasis this in graphically.

· Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud and Eucalyptus

Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud, UEC, is a stack of applications from Canonical included with Ubuntu Server Edition. UEC includes Eucalyptus along with a number of other open source software. UEC makes it very easy to install and configure the cloud.

There are a few differences between the Ubuntu Server Edition and the Ubuntu Desktop Edition. It should be noted that both editions use the same apt repositories. Kernel differences can be identified mainly between the two editions. The Server Edition uses the Deadline I/O scheduler whereas the Desktop edition uses CFQ scheduler. Preemption is switched off in the Server Edition. The timer interrupt is 100 Hz in the Server Edition and 250 Hz in the Desktop Edition.

Well, making it simple, UEC is a cloud computing technology allows you to build a private cloud deployment model in your own environment. You can pool your servers into a centrally managed resource pool behind your firewall on your own network. In UEC, you can manage all your resources yourself using the UEC management tool Landscape. Also UEC allows you to burst into public cloud platforms such as EC2 giving you an added level of flexibility. Figure 7, a screenshot representing Landscape tool after a private cloud has created. There are other management tools such as Rightscale, CohesiveFX, ElasticFox and etc.

But why UEC comes with EC2 architecture and APIs??

Amazon and EC2 is the momentum leader in the cloud business. So tying up with the leader will create a competitive advantage over other cloud providers. Best captures shift from product to service economy. Designing for EC2 guarantees on-demand deployment and scalability, two key benefits of cloud computing, that’s obviously cool. The Coolest feature I suppose is EC2 has already has many implementations such as Eucalyptus, Globus Nimbus, Open Nebula and etc. Also Top 2 listed most popular AMIs (Amazon Machine Images) is Ubuntu.

Eucalyptus is a cloud based software available under GPL (General Public License) that helps in creating and managing a private or even a publicly accessible cloud. It provides an EC2-compatible cloud computing platform and S3-compatible cloud storage platform. Eucalyptus has become very popular and is seen as one of the key open source cloud platforms. Since Eucalyptus makes its services available through EC2/S3 compatible APIs, the client tools written for AWS can be used with Eucalyptus as well.

In 2004 Amazon adopted a formula. If your systems are big, assume decoupling has been also done. The decoupled sections should communicate; at least some messages basically has to be passed or interchanged, in order to get a productive output from the system. Amazon’s solution for this is queuing. Amazon thought this will be the simplest and first-in-first-out solution for communicating. SQS is what Amazon named it. By using Simple Queue Service, according what AWS says, “Developers can move their data in between the decoupled or distributed components of their applications that perform different tasks without any message loses or requiring each component to be available always”. One interesting attribute of SQS is that you can rely on the queue as a buffer between your components; well this will increase the elasticity.

In every application, what we have as a huge draw-back is the storage capacity. Actually what we need is an infinite-like storage capacity. To fix this problem Amazon came up with the solution, that is Amazon Simple Storage Service or S3 was released in 2006, just two years after the release of SQS. S3 allows you to store 5 terabytes of data with unlimited number of objects within. S3 as a service is covered by a service level agreement (SLA) helped the industry to fully-adopt the concept. As statistics say that, in only two years, S3 grew to store 10 billion objects. In early 2010, AWS reported to store 102 billion objects in S3.
People thought that S3 is the perfect solution to be placed because it resolved the storage issue. But still Amazon thought that S3 is not sufficient to decouple the big system into small components. In the same year 2006, Amazon released another limited beta model called Elastic Cloud Compute or EC2, which was the logical piece which was missing in the puzzle. Because through the decoupling Amazon was expecting strict SOA implementation. Amazon wanted every small team of an organization not only to build its own infrastructure, but also for developers to operate their applications themselves. This thought rooted a new service model which we call that as IaaS or HaaS. EC2 turned computing upside down. AWS used XEN virtualization to create a whole new cloud category.
Now let we take a look at virtualization and its functionalities in the cloud.

One of the most notable character of cloud computing is scalability. The key technology with enables scalability is Virtualization. Virtualization is in simple terms, one physical machine takes multiple roles, so one single machine acts as multiple machines. Virtualization, in its broadest sense, is the emulation of one of more workstations/servers within a single physical computer. The concept of virtualization is not limited to simulation of entire machines, there are many, each differs upon its functionality. One of these, a very commonly used in almost all machines nowadays, that’s virtual memory.

Although the physical locations of data may be scattered across a computer’s RAM and Hard Drive, the process of virtual memory makes it appear that the data is stored contiguously and in order.

RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) is also a form of virtualization along with disk partitioning, processor virtualization and many other virtualization techniques. Virtualization allows the simulation of hardware through software. But for this occurrence, there should be some virtualization software installed in your physical hardware. VMware is well-known virtualization software, most users using it globally. There are other softwares also available in the market. VMware is very much capable of stimulating an x86 based hardware resources, in order to create a fully functional virtual machine. After the installation of VMware, you can selectively install the OS you wanted and other associated softwares on the newly created virtual machine simply. Multiple virtual machines also can be created, but each as different entity. This entity method will cut the interference between each virtual machine in order to ensure that every VM is working separately.

The following figure 4 and 5 will express what if not there’s no virtualization and what is good if there is virtualization.

Private cloud again the Wikipedia says, Private cloud is infrastructure operated solely for a single organization, whether managed internally or by a third-party and hosted internally or externally.
Many large organizations either prefer or forced by the laws and regulations to take private cloud model on their hand for some several important reasons. Unlike the pay-as-you-go model of public clouds, on the other hand, private clouds require significant up-front development costs, data centre costs, ongoing maintenance, hardware, software and internal expertise.

Let we compare both deployment models with their pros and cons.

Community clouds are used by distinct groups or communities (Universities, Charity Clubs, Sports Clubs) of organizations that have shared concerns such as compliance or security considerations, and the computing infrastructures may be provided by internal or third-party suppliers. The communities benefit from public cloud capabilities but they also know who their neighbors are so they have fewer fears about security and data protection.

Finally the fourth deployment model is Cloud hybrids, where it talks about the combination of Public and Private Clouds. An organization can deploy public cloud for their general computing and deploy private for the data which the organization feels sensitive i.e. Customer details, Policies, Confidential reports and so on. The figure 2 below neatly expresses the text.

From the definitions we knew the advantages of Cloud Computing. but on the other hand Cloud has many challenges that it has to improve for future integration.

After the installation up to figure 12, you need to install the Node Controller/ Controllers and register them. The node controller install is even simpler. Just make sure that you are connected to the network on which the cloud/cluster controller is already running.

After booting the ISO on the node or nodes, select UEC from there. It should detect the Cluster and preselect “Node” install for you. Make confirm your partitioning scheme, and the rest of the installation completes without interruption. You can log in to system as the cloud cluster host will define you the username and password.

When you are registering your nodes, well that will happen automatically, if the following prerequisites mentioned below is reached.

Public SSH keys have been exchanged properly, the services are configured properly and publishing their existence, the appropriate UEC-component-listener is running and verification of the registration.

Exchanging the SSH keys are vital. Because The Cloud Controller's eucalyptus user needs to have SSH access to the Walrus Controller, Cluster Controller, and Storage Controller as the eucalyptus user.

You can install the SSH keys from these following commands.
On the target controller, temporarily set a password for the eucalyptus user.

 sudo passwd eucalyptus

Then on the Cloud Controller,

sudo -u eucalyptus ssh-copy-id -i /var/lib/eucalyptus/.ssh/id_rsa.pub eucalyptus@<IP_OF_NODE>

Now you can preferably erase the target controller password.

sudo passwd -d eucalyptus

Next you have to configure the service of both the Cluster and Cloud Controllers. For the Cluster control configuration, define two shell variables.

CC-NAME in /etc/eucalyptus/eucalyptus-cc.conf and

CC_IP_ADDR in /etc/eucalyptus/eucalyptus-ip-addr.conf **

For the Walrus Controller,
Define the shell variable,

WALRUS_IP_ADDR in /etc/eucalyptus/eucalyptus-ipaddr.conf

Now this should defined as a single IP address.

On the other hand same procedure should be done at the Cloud Controller.

For the Storage Controller registration, same as cluster, define two shell variables following such as,

CC-NAME in /etc/eucalyptus/eucalyptus-cc.conf and

CC_IP_ADDR in /etc/eucalyptus/eucalyptus-ip-addr.conf **

** - If you have more IP addresses use a space to separate them.

Now, there you go, start publishing the services which you registered now. The commands are below.

sudo start eucalyptus-walrus-publication   à (1)

sudo start eucalyptus-walrus-publication   à (2)

Cloud Computing Challenges

In summary, the new paradigm of cloud computing provides a number of benefits and advantages over the previous computing paradigms and many organizations are adopting it. However, there are still a number of challenges, which are currently addressed by researchers and practitioners in the field (Leavitt, 2009). They are briefly presented below.

1. Performance

The major issue in performance can be for some intensive transaction-oriented and other data-intensive applications, in which cloud computing may lack adequate performance. Also, users who are at a long distance from cloud providers may experience high latency and delays.

2. Security and Privacy

Companies are still concerned about security when using cloud computing. Customers are worried about the vulnerability to attacks, when information and 18 B. Furht critical IT resources are outside the firewall.

3. Control

Some IT departments are concerned because cloud computing providers have a full control of the platforms. Cloud computing providers typically do not design platforms for specific companies and their business practices.

4. Bandwidth Costs

With cloud computing, companies can save money on hardware and software; however they could incur higher network bandwidth charges. Bandwidth cost may be low for smaller Internet-based applications, which are not data intensive, but could significantly grow for data-intensive applications.

5. Reliability

Cloud computing still does not always offer round-the-clock reliability. There were cases where cloud computing services suffered few-hours outages. In the future, we can expect more cloud computing providers, richer services, established standards, and best practices. In the research arena, HP Labs, Intel, and Yahoo have launched the distributed Cloud Research Test Bad, with facilities in Asia, Europe, and North America, with the objective to develop innovations including cloud computing specific chips. IBM has launched the Research Computing Cloud, which is an on-demand, globally accessible set of computing resources that support business processes.

· Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2)

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is a keyword in Cloud computing which started their services back in 2002. The first set of APIs thoroughly explained in a book called “Amazon Hacks”. The following figure 3 will explain the pathway of AWS services throughout.

AWS has two unique characteristics. Those are the initial cost is not very huge and it scales and continues to run it in a low cost.

If your organization systems are too big, then perhaps the only best solution is “Decoupling”. Decoupling is simply, breaking your systems into small pieces and having a few dependencies on each other as possible. Initially decoupling was introduced not in web services or applications. Big organizations such as banks and organizations that used decoupling with help of tools such as CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture). The concept of CORBA was “Component based Software Engineering”. Similar set of design principle in the recent past called Service-oriented Architecture or SOA, where this is the principle mostly applied to web applications and their interactions.

There are three main services of Cloud computing identified. The term services in cloud computing is the concept of being able to use reusable, fine-grained components across a vendor’s network. This is widely known as “as a service.”

§ SaaS ( Software as a Service )

This basically means the software which is there in the cloud. Applications delivered as a service to end users over the Internet. This model is the earliest model of cloud computing in which software companies started to sell their solutions to businesses based on the number of users with a given set of service-level requirements. With SaaS, Customers don’t pay for owning the software; rather, they pay for using it. SaaS provides network-based access to commercially available software. Since the software is managed at a central location, customers can access their applications wherever they have web access.

There are many organizations do service oriented services in the cloud, the big names follows as Oracle (with its CRM on Demand solution), Salesforce.com, and Google (with its Google Apps).

§ PaaS (Platform as a Service)

PaaS is also an application delivering model as like SaaS. But how it differs from SaaS is that, this platform is responsible for operating and organizing all the resources which are to build applications and services completely from the internet, doesn’t require a download or installation software.

Well, the concept PaaS can be easily narrowed down like this. Imagine you’re using NetBeans or Eclipse for your development purpose. So that IDE is simply your development environment. As simple as that, PaaS is a development environment offered as a service in order to create custom applications by the developer. For more info, developer is using the vendor’s “Building Blocks” to create his apps. It is very easy and cool to create apps here, because, of the predefined codes and its integrations.
The PaaS layer is a pretty quite recent addition. PaaS is responsible for providing complete virtualization of the infrastructure (i.e., for making all of these resources appear to be as simple as a single server).
How well that is done will greatly influence the complexity, cost, and effectiveness of both the operations and any efforts to construct (in whole or in part) software applications.
In addition, it is at this layer where it is most logical to easily ensure reliability for both cloud applications and storage.

Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) and Savvis are the prominent providers of this model of cloud service. Google App. Engine is very popular for PaaS integration in the recent past.

§ HaaS (Hardware as a Service)

The next type of cloud model is HaaS; it is often called as IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service). This model is not providing any sort of services to the users or developers, but, importantly it offers the hardware that the organization needs when and where. HaaS allows the service providers to “rent” the hardware resources. You can rent Server space, Network equipments, Memory, CPU cycles, Storage space and etc. Based on the organization need the infrastructure can be dynamically altered. Also multiple tenants can be included on to the equipment that you’re renting. There are several guidelines about HaaS and its services.

Service level protocols, Hardware, Network, Internet connectivity, Platform virtualization environment and Utility computing billing are some of them. Service level protocols explain about an agreement between the HaaS providers and clients to ensure a certain level of performance by the system and the hardware. Platform virtualization environment enables the users to run virtual machines on the system. We will have a broad view about virtualization later in the article. Utility computing billing is a set-up which charges the user upon the usage of the resources.

Amazon EC2 is the prominent provider of this model of cloud service. We will also have a broad view Amazon EC2 in the latter part of the article.

There are four deployment models that have been identified in the cloud computing paradigm. They are Public Cloud, Private Cloud, Hybrid Cloud and Community Cloud.

Public cloud is a model which can be defined as pure cloud. As Wikipedia says, a public cloud is one based on the standard cloud computing model, in which a service provider makes resources, such as applications and storage, available to the general public over the Internet. Public cloud services may be free or offered on a pay-per-usage model.
But there are many draw-backs in Public cloud where the industry has gone to Private cloud.

What is Cloud Computing?

Cloud computing, the top-talk of almost all IT professionals nowadays, but actually what does it means?? The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) defines cloud computing as,
it is a model for enabling convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g. networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction.

But, in simple terms we can refer as, if you can walk into any library or Internet cafe and sit down at any computer without preference for operating system or browser and access a service, that service is cloud-based.

The Cloud computing is a paradigm shift from various computing models such as Main frame, PC, Network, Internet, Grid and finally the industry shifted into Cloud which has many more advantages over other five models.

Grid is a computing architecture where computations can be split and data can be processed in parallel across a distributed network of computers.
What actually Grid is, a unit which uses many different processing powers to process and perform a task. But this task is managed by a primary machine. What this primary machine does is, it divides the task into small chunk of tasks and these small tasks will be distributed to the other machines in the same cluster. The processed output of each machine will be sent to the primary machine to get the ultimate result. The primary machine will take care of organizing the results and managing them. All the results are clubbed together and a single output is provided.

So, Grid computing == Cloud computing??

No. Not true at all. There are various differing factors in two models. What we can identify as main differentiating factor between the two is, the method it adopts for computing the tasks within their individual environments. Grids as I said it divides the tasks into machines in the cluster and after each machine processed the data, which data will be sending to the primary machine. See figure 1.
The cloud architecture enables the user to use different set of services, but the user can use the service without investigating the underneath architectures. The beauty of Cloud is that!! Though, grid too offers similar facility for computing power, but cloud computing isn’t restricted to just that. With a cloud users can avail various services such as website hosting etc.

"அபூர்வ சகோதரர்கள் படத்துல ஒரு சீன்ல நாகேஷ் சிங்கத்துக்கிட்ட சிக்குற மாதிரி வரும். அந்த ஷாட்டை டூப் போட்டு எடுத்துட்டு இருந்த போது நாகேஷ் சார் அங்க வந்தார்.. இதுக்கெல்லாம் எதுக்கு டூப்பு.. நானே நடிக்குறேன் என்று ஒத்த கால நின்னார்.. நானும் "இல்ல சார்.. ரிஸ்க்கு.. நிஜ சிங்கத்த பாத்தா பயம் இல்லையா ன்னு கேட்டான்.." அதுக்கு அவரு "வீரன் போர்ல தான் சாகணும், வியாதில இல்லன்னு" சொல்ல நாங்க எல்லாரும் நெகிழ்ந்துட்டோம்.. உடனே, "அட உங்கள கலாய்க்க சொன்னதுப்பா.. இந்த மாதிரி எத்தன சிங்கத்த பார்த்திருப்பேன் " ன்னு டைமிங்கா காமெடி பண்ணார்.. என்னோட ஒரு நாடகத்துல முதலில் ஒரு பைத்தியக்கார காரெக்டர் வரும், அடுத்து வாறவரும் லூசு மாதிரியே பேசுவாரா.. அதைப்பார்க்கும் ஹீரோ "அட நீயும் பைத்தியமா " ன்னு கேட்பார்.. அந்த காட்சியை பார்த்த நாகேஷ் "ஏன்பா, காமெடிக்கு பொழிப்புரை போடுறிங்க.. ரெண்டாவது வாறவர பார்த்து "நீயுமா" ன்னு கேட்ட போதும்.. "நீயும் பைத்தியமா " ன்னு ரெண்டு வார்த்தைய வீணடிக்காதிங்க " ன்னு சொன்னாரு. வார்த்தைகளை கௌரவப்படுத்திய கலைஞர் அவர்.. இறப்பதற்கு முதல் என்னோட "சாக்லட் கிருஷ்ணா" நாடகம் பார்க்க வந்தார். "உடம்பு சரியில்ல மோகன், சீக்கிரம் கிளம்பிடுவேன்" சொன்னவரு நாடகம் முடியும் வரை இருந்து பார்த்தாரு... மறுநாள் போன் பண்ணி ஒன்றரை மணிநேரம் பாராட்டினார்.. நாடகத்து மேல அவர் வச்சிருந்த பாசமும் மரியாதையும் அப்படிப்பட்டது...."
