Di Banten terdapat peninggalan warisan leluhur yang sangat dihormati, antara lain Mesjid Agung Banten Lama, Makam keramat Panjang, Masjid Raya AL-A’zhom dan beberapa peninggalan historis lainnya yang bernuansa religi. Latar belakang historis ini membuat mayoritas penduduk Banten memiliki semangat religius keislaman yang sangat kuat dengan tingkat toleransi yang tinggi. Sebagian besar masyarakat memang memeluk Islam, tetapi pemeluk agama lain dapat hidup berdampingan dengan damai. Dalam ukuran tertentu, Banten bisa menjadi salah satu contoh laboratorium raksasa pluralisme agama di Indonesia.

Kondisi sosial budaya masyarakat Banten diwarnai oleh potensi dan kekhasan budaya masyarakatnya yang sangat variatif, mulai dari seni bela diri pencak silat, debus, rudat, umbruk, tari saman, tari topeng, tari cokek, dog-dog, palingtung, dan lojor. Hampir semua seni tradisionalnya sangat kental diwarnai dengan etika Islam. Ada juga seni tradisional yang datang dari luar kota Banten, tapi semua itu telah mengalami proses akulturasi budaya sehingga terkesan sebagai seni tradisional Banten, misalnya seni kuda lumping, tayuban, gambang kromong dan tari cokek. Bahasa yang digunakan masyarakat Banten khususnya yang berada di wilayah utara menggunakan bahasa Jawa Serang, sedangkan di wilayah selatan menggunakan Bahasa Sunda. Namun demikian, masyarakat setempat umumnya lebih sering menggunakan Bahasa Indonesia.

Provinsi Banten juga terkenal dengan masyarakat tradisonalnya yang masih memegang teguh adat tradisi, baik cara berpakaian maupun pola hidup lainnya. Mereka dikenal dengan suku Baduy yang tinggal di desa Kanekes, kecamatan Leuwidamar, Kabupaten Lebak. Perkampungan masyarakat Baduy umumnya terletak di daerah aliran sungai Ciujung di pegunungan Kendeng.

Banten selatan, sekitar 65 km sebelah selatan ibukota Provinsi Banten. Pemerintah menetapkan kawasan cagar budaya Pegunungan Kendang seluas 5.101,85 ha di Kenekes sebagai tempat tinggal mereka. Daerah ini dikenal sebagai wilayah titipan nenek moyang mereka yang harus dipelihara dan dijaga dengan baik, tidak boleh dirusak, dan tidak boleh diakui sebagai hal milik pribadi. Agama Islam diperkenalkan oleh Sunan Gunung Jati, salah satu pendiri Kesultanan Cirebon pada 1520, dalam ekspedisi damainya bersamaan dengan penaklukan Sunda Kelapa. Kemudian, ketika kekuatan Banten dipegang oleh Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa (1651-1682), debus difokuskan sebagai alat untuk membangkitkan semangat para pejuang dalam melawan penjajahan Belanda.
