It's a good option when you don’t have room for a traditional external display.

Even for someone like me who likes working from home, the pandemic has made things a challenge – especially in my small 1,000 square-foot two-bedroom apartment. You see, when my wife and I welcomed our first child last year, dedicated working spaces became scarce. So I addressed the situation the best way I know how: with tech. Before my son arrived, we actually had a pretty good setup going. I used our second bedroom as an office and very occasional guest room. And when all the office buildings closed in early 2019 due to Covid-19, we managed to find room for another desk in our bedroom. It wasn’t ideal because, even though I’m a gadget nerd, we try to keep the bedroom free of unnecessary screens and distractions. But we each had our own dedicated working space with dual monitors, and enough room between our desks that we could jump on video calls without disturbing one another. It was awkward but acceptable.

The downside of this is that I’m pretty limited in where I could put my PC. Big shock I know, but a desktop sort of necessitates having a desk. Thankfully, my wife graciously offered to let me use the one in our bedroom (which I honestly can’t appreciate enough), while she moved her workspace out to our dining table in the living room.

While the Asus ROG Strix XG17AHP does look seem of puny compared to regular monitors, its much easier to pack up and move when you need that space for other stuff.

At this point, you’re probably envisioning a host of issues. Since we eat dinner there, setting up dual monitors isn’t really an option. This meant my wife was completely reliant on her 13-inch MacBook Pro, which doesn’t offer a lot of screen space and messes with her posture. Looking down at a laptop screen for eight (or more) hours a day is a surefire recipe for chronic neck and back pain.

That’s where the ASUS’ ROG Strix XG17AHP portable monitor comes in. At first glance, it seems like overkill for general productivity, and it is. It has a 240Hz refresh rate and support for AMD FreeSync, which are great for gaming but don’t do much when you’re looking at spreadsheets. There’s even a built-in 7,800 mAh battery so you can use it completely untethered for four to five hours. And with a price of $600, the ROG Strix XG17AHP is two to three times more expensive than a lot of competitors, particularly the traditional business-oriented ones.

If you’re a fan of sci-fi futuristic movies such as Battlestar Galactica and Star Wars, you’re already familiar with hoverbikes, or simply flying bikes.

Well, seeing hoverbikes in movies presenting futuristic and semi-human societies is normal, I guess. But seeing them in real life can be mind-blowing, super weird, what-the-fuck — you name it.

Thus, I was very amazed when Japanese startup A.L.I. Innovations revealed its Xturismo hoverbike last November at a race track close to Tokyo.

So, how does it work?

Basically, the Xturismo is what happens when you place a motorcycle on top of a drone platform. And this makes it an VTOL, meaning a vertical take-off and landing aircraft.

The hoverbike is also a hybrid, getting its power from a conventional engine and four electric motors. It’s capable of flying thanks to a set of propellers: two primary ones (where the wheels would have been) and four secondary propellers at each corner, which act as stabilizers.

The Xturismo qualifies as an ultralight aircraft, which means that you don’t need to be a certified pilot to fly it.

Monitor Build

The monitor has a sturdy metal construction with very thin bezels on the top and two sides. The bottom bezel is 1.25″. The case is 0.212″ wide, 14.37″ x 9″, and weighs 1.5 lbs.

The fully black metal case is firm and has no flex when held. Thicker casing at the base houses the additional circuitry and components that make the portable panel plug and play. The base also houses the dual hi-fi speakers.

There is no MicroSD slot. On the lower left edge of the base is a 3.5mm headphone jack, a wheel button to access settings, and the on/off button.

On the right side’s bottom edge of the base, viewed from the front, are one mini-HDMI port, one USB-C port, and a micro-USB port. One of those ports must have the power connection.

Using It

Other than adjusting the screen to your specific needs, no hardware and software configurations are needed. If attached to a computer, the only thing you need to do is open the computer’s display settings to select how you want the panel to respond.

The standard computer settings usually allow the secondary monitor to either mirror the primary display or show whatever window content you drag from the primary monitor to the external panel.

Pushing the panel’s wheel button opens a popup window in the lower left corner. Use the wheel to select the settings you want to adjust. These include picture brightness, color elements, and audio.

It's Apple pre-order day, and not just for the M1-powered iPad Air or the latest iPhone SE. At its "Peek Performance" event this week, Apple unveiled new green versions of the iPhone 13 series, bringing the total number of colors for the non-Pro models to six. The iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max are now available in five shades, and you can now pre-order this new "Alpine Green" version on Apple's website.

While the iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 13's new hues look earthier and closer to a leafy green, the Pro flagships come with a sort of frosted finish that helps them better reject smudges. It also makes the color a little paler and adds a metallic sheen.

There's nothing else different about these new iPhones. They're last year's iPhone 13s, but green. Intrigued? Then take a look at these pictures I took of the new gadgets under different lighting conditions.

I've included photos of the two new iPhone 13s along with other green phones like the Sage Pixel 5 and Pixel 5a. The latter's official color is called Mostly Black, but it definitely looks more like Off Green. My favorite is still the pastel green iPhone 12, which will reign in my heart as the best green gadget. At least until someone finds a phone of the same color (or scent). Or var.Or pandas. NHTSA greenlights self-driving cars without manual controls.

Ditching the steering wheel and pedals could enable a new class of autonomous vehicles.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened the door for self-driving vehicles to operate without manual controls under updated Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. While fully autonomous vehicles are likely several years away from going on sale, the new rule paves the way for automakers to remove the steering wheel and pedals.

“Through the 2020s, an important part of [the Department of Transportation's] safety mission will be to ensure safety standards keep pace with the development of automated driving and driver assistance systems,” transportation secretary Pete Buttigieg said. “This new rule is an important step, establishing robust safety standards for [Automated Driving Systems]-equipped vehicles.”

The Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards regulate all elements of production cars, as Roadshow notes. The latest rule stipulates that whether or not they have a steering wheel and pedals, vehicles with automated driving systems need to offer the same level of protection to drivers and passengers as other cars.

Fully autonomous (Level 5) cars aren't on the market yet. Teslas are at Level 2 (they have some autonomy, but a human driver needs to be ready to take control). Volkswagen is making a Level 4 version of its ID.Buzz EV, while pilot projects for robotaxis and self-driving shuttles are underway. At CES 2022, Cadillac showed off a luxury concept EV without a steering wheel or pedals.

NHTSA acknowledged uncertainty about the development and deployment of vehicles equipped with ADS. "Nevertheless, NHTSA believes it is appropriate to finalize this action at this time in anticipation of emerging ADS vehicle designs that NHTSA has seen in prototype form," the agency said.

DuckDuckGo will stop showing Russian propaganda in search results

The search engine's founder said he was “sickened” by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The search engine DuckDuckGo will be down-ranking sites that spread Russian propaganda and disinformation. In a tweet, founder and CEO Gabriel Weinberg wrote that the privacy-focused search engine would be releasing updates that would ensure Russian disinformation sites rank further down in search results. Earlier this month, DuckDuckGo announced it would pause its relationship with Russian-state owned search engine Yandex.

A number of platforms, including Meta's Facebook and Instagram, also cut posts from Russian state media. Google has been downgrading search results from Russia's state news agency since 2017

Known as a privacy-oriented search engine, DuckDuckGo does not track its users or sell data to third parties. The company primarily makes money from partnerships and non-targeted contextual advertising. DuckDuckGo, which regularly donates to digital rights groups such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation and non-profit newsroom The Markup, has also received support from conspiracy theorists and far-right groups in recent years. A series of research highlighted in The New York Times has found that the search algorithm Bing that powers DuckDuckGo shows more websites promoting conspiracy theories than Google.

Many fans of DuckDuckGo criticized the search engine for its decision on Russia, likening it to “censorship”. It’s unclear whether DuckDuckGo will make a wider effort to down-rank disinformation.

Weinberg did not detail in his tweet which Russian propaganda sites DuckDuckGo would target, or whether the search engine will target other types of disinformation, such as on climate change or COVID-19.

DuckDuckGo provided Engadget with the following statement regarding this change:

The primary utility of a search engine is to provide access to accurate information. Disinformation sites that deliberately put out false information to intentionally mislead people directly cut against that utility. Current examples are Russian state-sponsored media sites like RT and Sputnik. It's also important to note that down-ranking is different from censorship. We are simply using the fact that that these sites are engaging in active disinformation campaigns as a ranking signal that the content they produce is of lower quality, just like there are signals for spammy sites and other lower-quality content. In addition to this approach, for newsworthy topics we're also continuing to highlight reputable news coverage and reliable “instant answers” at the top of our search results where they are seen and clicked the most. We're also in the process of thinking about other types of interventions.

Intel NUC 12 Extreme Review: Powerful DIY Mini Desktop for Creator's and Gamers

Intel's quest for the perfect mini desktop continues with the NUC 12 Extreme, its newest DIY kit. Codenamed "Dragon Canyon," it's essentially a slightly upgraded version of last year's NUC 11 Extreme that was the first of its kind to fit on a full-size desktop graphics card. It now features Intel's 12th Generation hybrid desktop processor, which promises to be a huge improvement over last year's processors. While this latest kit is still a bit cramped - and can quickly get expensive when you add your own RAM, SSD, and GPU - the NUC 12 Extreme proves that Intel is clearly committed to the small desktop world. And with Apple's Mac Studio coming soon, it could be more exciting than ever for computer manufacturers.

Given how much effort Intel put into developing a large NUC case last year, it's not too surprising that the NUC 12 Extreme shares the same 8-liter housing. It's large enough to fit in a 12-inch graphics card, but the rest of its interior is tightly packed with its power supply and Compute Unit, a removable card that houses its CPU, three NVMe SSD connections and two RAM slots. It's clearly a case meant for gaming enthusiasts, with the telltale sign being the RGB LED skull up front and additional lighting underneath. The NUC 12 Extreme is basically the PC equivalent to a Honda Civic souped up for street racing: It can't exist without a bit of bling.

Despite its small stature, the NUC's case has just about all the connectivity you'd want from a desktop. Up front, there’s a USB-C Thunderbolt 4 port, a USB 3.1 Type-A socket, an SDXC card slot and a headphone jack. And on the back of the Compute Card, there are two more Thunderbolt 4 USB-C connections, six USB Type-A ports, an HDMI 2.0b socket and two Ethernet jacks (10GbE and 2.5Gb). We reviewed the NUC12EDBi9 kit, which included the Core i9-12900 processor, but there's also another kit with an i7-12700 available.

Typically, Intel sends out pre-constructed NUC kits for overview so we will get instantly benchmarking. This year, however, the agency issued the equal DIY package customers might get, which handiest consists of the case, PSU and Compute Card. That supposed I needed to roll up my sleeves and put together for scraped knuckles – it turned into PC constructing time! I scrounged up 16GB of RAM and a one-terabyte Samsung SSD from the preceding NUC Extreme, together with a spare NVIDIA RTX 3080 card, and were given right down to business.

Getting into the NUC Extreme is pretty simple: You just have to remove a few screws from the rear, open up the portion of the case blocking the PCI slot screws and remove a side panel to expose its innards. Thankfully, I was able to add in the RAM and SSD without removing the Compute Card. But if you'd like to take that out, perhaps to upgrade to a newer model down the line, you just have to hit a latch to unlock the three large top fans, pull those back, and yank the card out like any other PCI card. You'll have to be careful when removing its antenna cables and power connectors, but it's easy enough if you've already got PC building experience. Given the delicate nature of that process, it's not something I'd recommend doing unless you absolutely have to, though.

The RTX 3080 easily fit into the NUC Extreme's PCIe slot, but I wish there was a bit more internal space to deal with all of its power cables. As with most powerful GPUs, the RTX 3080 requires two 8-pin PSU connections, which are attached to the card by a dongle. It was a challenge stuffing all of those cables into the NUC, and I was constantly worried they'd be clipped by the GPU's fan blades. I also had a hard time accessing the PCIe latch to remove the 3080 after I installed it. I was eventually able to unlock it with a flat-edge screwdriver, as I typically do in tight PC builds, but the latch flew off as soon as I removed the card. Clearly, there's room for better build quality.

Once I plugged everything in (and soothed my poor knuckles from being jammed into sharp edges and cables), I booted up the NUC and installed Windows 11 via a flash drive. Then, I rewarded myself the way every PC builder must: I started gaming. I averaged around 100fps while playing Halo Infinite in my monitor's ultrawide (3,440 by 1,440) resolution with all of the graphics settings cranked to maximum. That's impressive, but pretty much what I'd expect from any system powered by an RTX 3080. More notable, I'd say, is that the NUC was able to play games for hours without overheating. I typically see CPU temperatures between 80 and 85 Celsius under load, while the GPU never surpassed 82C. Not bad for a system with severely limited airflow and no room for any sort of liquid cooling.

Benchmarking the NUC 12 Extreme also made it clear that Intel's 12th-gen processors are a serious upgrade. Its GeekBench 5 CPU score was the highest we've seen on any system; the closest match was the Alienware x14, powered by the 12th-gen Core i7-12700H, followed by Apple's 16-inch MacBook Pro with an M1 Max. The NUC's multi-core score was also around 4,000 points higher than last year's model, which makes it an even better choice for creators doing serious rendering work. It also achieved the highest PCMark 10 score we've seen yet, though that's partially influenced by GPU power.

While these benchmarks don't tell the entire story, they indicate that the NUC 12 Extreme could be a solid workhorse that'll serve you well for years. Of course, its overall performance depends on all of the other hardware you configure it with. But at least you're free to upgrade the RAM, SSD and GPU down the line, something you can't do with a competitor like Apple's Mac Studio.

When I started testing this NUC kit, I was concerned it was going to be another overly expensive curiosity like its predecessors. Why spend thousands more than a standard mid-tower or mini-ITX desktop system just to have a slightly smaller box on your desk? It's still pretty pricey: The Core i7 Kit starts at $1,150, while the Core i9 model we're reviewing sells for $1,450, and then you'll have to add around $1,000 for a GPU, memory, SSD and OS. But you know what? Apple's Mac Studio also starts at $2,000, and while it includes a hefty 32GB of RAM, you'll probably want to add a 1TB or 2TB SSD for an additional $200 or $400. Basically, if you want tiny desktop power, be prepared to pay.

If anything, Intel was just ahead of the current mini-desktop moment. If you're in the market for one, and you enjoy getting down and dirty with PC hardware, then the NUC 12 Extreme will serve you well. While the Mac Studio is sleeker and doesn't require any scraped knuckles, macOS also doesn't have nearly the same level of gaming support as a Windows PC, so it's mainly meant for work. Apple Arcade titles are nice and all, but they're no replacement for having a tiny box that’ll play Elden Ring.

Panasonic will rapidly start producing next-gen Tesla batteries in 2023

Panasonic is due to start mass producing next-generation lithium-ion batteries for Tesla with five times the energy capacity of existing models as early as 2023, according to a report from Nikkei Asia. Although the batteries are being manufactured primarily for Tesla, a Panasonic executive didn’t rule out supplying them to other companies in a November interview. The new batteries promise to boost the range of electric cars, and make them more affordable to produce and sell.

In a statement given to Reuters, Panasonic declined to confirm Nikkei’s report. “We are studying various options for mass production, including a test production line we are establishing this business year,” the company said. “We don’t, however, have anything to announce at this time.”

Nikkei reports that the larger, higher-capacity batteries — which are known as 4680 battery cells because they measure 46mm x 80mm in size — could increase the range of electric vehicles by around 20 percent, while Tesla itself has mentioned a 16 percent range increase. They could take a car like its flagship Model S and increase its range from 650km (around 404 miles) to 750km (around 465 miles), according to Nikkei. Panasonic is reportedly expanding its Wakayama, Japan plant to mass produce the new batteries, and previously told the Wall Street Journal that test production is due to start in March 2022.

The next-generation battery cells were detailed by Tesla at a high profile event in September 2020. As well as their higher storage capacity, the company’s CEO Elon Musk said the cells are six times more powerful, and reduce cost per kWh by 14 percent (batteries are estimated to make up 30 percent of the cost of an electric vehicle). Lower prices and improved range are the sorts of improvements that are key to making electric cars more desirable, as Nikkei notes.

The focus of Tesla’s 2020 event was on the company’s attempts to produce the batteries in-house, to reduce potential disruptions from relying on external suppliers like Panasonic. But in a series of tweets posted ahead of the event, Musk said the company would continue to buy battery cells from other companies. “We intend to increase, not reduce battery cell purchases from Panasonic, LG & CATL,” Musk tweeted, adding that Tesla would be unlikely to achieve high-volume production of the cells until 2022.

During later profit calls, Musk has repeated that he expects Tesla's in-house creation of the 4680 cells to begin in 2022, and that the primary vehicles furnished with these phones will transport that very year. In an April 2021 income call, Musk demonstrated the organization was 12 to year and a half away from large scale manufacturing of the new cells. In any case, in July he advised that "model creation is simple, yet high-volume creation is hard," the WSJ notes.

It's not the lowest price we've ever seen on an Apple Watch Series 7, but it's close. Here at Engadget, our sharp-eyed commerce team noticed that Amazon is selling Apple's latest smartwatch for $349, or $50 off the normal starting price. This time around, it's the Product RED and green models specifically that are on sale. Though we've seen the green variant on sale for $10 less, this is the lowest price we've seen on the red edition, if that's the color you happen to have been eyeing.

For the money, you're looking at an entry-level aluminum model with GPS connectivity and a 41mm screen (the smaller of the two sizes, with the larger measuring 45mm). Indeed, it's mostly that slightly larger and therefore more user-friendly display that distinguishes it from the previous-gen Series 6. You'll also appreciate the 33-percent faster charging speeds in your day-to-day use. (Can confirm, as a Series 7 owner myself.)

In any case, the Series 7 offers all that we previously adored with regards to the Apple Watch, including a wide choice of applications and watchfaces, programmed exercise recognition and a blend of wellbeing and security highlights including a pulse sensor, blood oxygen readings and fall location.

Some of the bright spots we (begrudgingly) recognize in yet another hellish year.

Though this year is by no means one to celebrate, there were still some bright spots in the world of tech. It’s with plenty of loathing that we admit this: NFTs somehow won this year. They’ve taken over. Reddit’s day traders also deserve recognition for the way they’ve managed to manifest GameStop’s slogan, “Power to the players.”

Also (and this might be the most painful to acknowledge), the Metaverse (sorta) took off this year. At least in terms of our lexicon, with mentions of the word skyrocketing since Mark Zuckerberg uttered it while announcing a plan for a richer VR and AR-focused world. Maybe people were confused between “metaverse” and “multiverse” as in Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness?

Besides the things we love to hate, there are some products this year we genuinely liked as well. Apple continued to impress with its M1 chips and, more importantly, gave users a way to repair their own devices (kinda). Google’s first-ever mobile chip powered clever experiences on the latest Pixel phones and showcased the company’s AI and software prowess at a competitive price. As we continue to be bombarded by depressing news every day, it’s worth taking the time to reflect on the wins this year, no matter how tiny.

NFTs

2021 has not been a quiet year, so NFTs deserve something approaching praise for securing a spot in the highlights reel. NFTs, or Non-Fungible Tokens, are an attempt to create an immutable digital asset in an environment where such a thing has historically been tricky. For the industry’s proponents, it’s a way of imposing some form of scarcity on digital artifacts that you can’t easily make scarce. Anyone can right-click and save a picture of a monkey wearing sunglasses and a Hawaiian shirt after all. But only the person who paid a lot of money for the NFT can go around calling themselves the “owner” of the same. As Nietzche didn’t say, NFTs are the lie agreed upon, suggesting that people respect the owner of the certificated copy of something over everything else.

The Mi Mix Alpha might not be a foldable smartphone, but it does come with a foldable smartphone price tag: $2,810 (RMB 19,999).

OK, so... why? Why does the screen go all the way around the phone? Well, first, Xiaomi is placing functionality on the sides of the phone, since those are all pixels now. The status bar looks like it lives on the side of the phone and lists the usual readouts like the battery, cellular connectivity, Bluetooth, and other icons. Using the sides for the screen necessitates relocating the power and volume buttons, and while there is still a physical power button on the top, virtual side buttons will be taking over for volume duties.

A button on the left side (named "6" in the renders) seems like it will be use as the volume button. And on second gesture navigation, it look like the Android navigation buttons for "Back" and "Home" live on the right side of the wraparound display. The main design change enabled by the back screen is that a selfie camera is not necessary. The one display spec we get is the made-for-headlines quote that the phone has "a screen-to-body ratio of more than 180.6%," which is not at all how the "screen-to-body ratio" spec is supposed to work.

180.6% screen-to-body ratio would mean you're approaching nearly twice as much "screen" as "body." Xiaomi neglected to show its work on the math here, but the way screen-to-body ratio usually works is by comparing the area of the front of the phone to the area of the screen. Then you'll get something like "88.3%" for a phone like the OnePlus 7 Pro, meaning the front of the phone is 88.3% screen and 11.7% bezel. Xiaomi seems to be comparing the front phone area to the entire phone screen, which also includes the back of the phone, which removes all meaning from the bezel-measurement spec. These numbers sound impressive, I guess, if you don't think about them too much.

The other critical information we're missing is any word on what the cover for the display is. Foldable phones have to make due with a soft, flexible-plastic cover. But since this phone doesn't have a moving display, it's possible that glass or a hard plastic could be used. Xiaomi only promises a "smooth and flat surface" for the screen from a "durable protective layer."

But hold on a minute—how does the touchscreen work when the sides are all screen? Wouldn't you constantly be touching the touchscreen and sending errant display inputs? Xiaomi was not clear about how this will work, either. One possibility is that the sides aren't touch-sensitive, since Xiaomi lists "pressure-sensitive virtual side buttons" in one slide. If the sides were touch-enabled, they would have to be pressure sensitive, since a light touch would already activate them.

Other than the top and bottom, the only part of the phone that isn't screen is a bar on the back, which houses the cameras and a bunch of connectivity antennas. You at least get some premium materials with the sky-high price: the cameras are covered with sapphire glass, the border of the back strip is ceramic, and the frame is a titanium alloy.

For specs, you get a Snapdragon 855+, 12GB of RAM, 512GB of storage, and a 4050mAh battery. Xiaomi put special effort into the cameras, too, with a main 108MP (yes, one hundred and eight megapixel) camera that uses a 1/1.33-inch type sensor, one of the biggest in a modern smartphone. There's also a 20MP wide-angle camera and a 12MP 2x telephoto.

You can also expect thinner bezels from TVs leveraging LG OLED EX. LG Display said it was able to cut bezel size from 6 mm on 65-inch displays to 4 mm.

As of Q2 2022, OLED EX will be used in all OLED TVs made at LG Display's OLED production plants in Paju, South Korea and Guangzhou, China.

Xiaomi notes there are four speakers and a side fingerprint scanner. Disappointingly, Xiaomi is shipping the phone with Android 10 instead of the latest version, Android 11.

The camera features the debut of “Liquid Lens technology” in a smartphone. One of the camera lenses is literally a drop of oil instead of a glass lens, and by applying a voltage to it, you can change the shape and focal length of the lens. Liquid lenses are not a new idea—they show up in things like industrial barcode scanners—but they're new for a phone. Xiaomi says the lens allows one camera to cover two functions: the 8 MP sensor is both a 3x optical zoom and has a minimum focus distance of 3 cm for macro photos.

Your liquid lens needs to not freeze in low temperatures, but Xiaomi says you'll be good for a low of -40 °C (-40 °F) to a high of 60 °C (140 °F).
