The power ministry is tapping the imagination of advertising gurus to hammer home the message that India can save 25,000MW of energy every year by being prudent.

The Piyush Goyal-led ministry has roped in Ogilvy & Mather India executive chairman Piyush Pandey, Madison World chairman and MD Sam Balsara and Sunil Alagh, a marketing consultant, for a compelling campaign around saving and efficient use of electricity. "We are all helping the committee as individuals. We are now waiting for the brief," Pandey said. "The idea is to bring awareness on saving power and ways of using power in the correct way

Despite having an installed power generation capacity of over 250,000 MW, about 5% of India's close to 600,000 villages remain deprived of electricity, while power supply in most rural areas is erratic, mainly due to high consumption in urban areas.

Some experts say the government's efforts to cut electricity wastage need to be supplement strategies to reach out to the industrial and agriculture sectors where energy conservation potential is estimated at over 23%.

As per the ministry's estimates, close to 25,000 MW of energy can be saved annually.

The ministry, sources say, may rope in prominent faces as brand ambassadors to energise its "saving electricity" campaigns which, thus far, are perceived to have not achieved much. An efficient power sector tops the priority list of Narendra Modi, who as chief minister had turned around Gujarat's utilities and showcased them as a development model.

In its election manifesto earlier this year, the BJP promised uninterrupted power supply for all. Government agencies like the Bureau of Energy Efficiency have taken several steps to improve energy efficiency and promote power saving.

Ogilvy's sister agency, Soho Square and Madison, helped the BJP with its Lok Sabha poll campaign, which too was led by Union minister Goyal, Pandey and Balsara, and the trio continue to work on campaigns for state assembly elections. Asked if he is open to joining more committee's within government, Pandey said, "I am open to helping out on any call. But I can't spread myself too thin and then fail to deliver the work."

Meanwhile, there are talks that Modi wants Pandey to lead communications for both the government and the party. Although Pandey denied having received any such offer, several top executives at WPP said the offer includes maintaining agency relations and supervising government projects like 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan', 'Clean Ganga' and 'Jan Dhan Yojana', among others.

Power Ministry To Sell LED Bulbs at Rs.10 The LED Market is Currently Worth Around Rs 400

In open market LED (Light Emitting Diode) bulb is currently available for Rs.400 which is a very high cost product. After the Noble Prize was awarded to three Japanese Scientist for their exploration in LED, Central government announce that the LED bulb will be made available in market for just Rs.10 only. Union Energy Ministry decided to implement this program by taking a revolutionary step in the field of energy saving.

Considering the high cost of Rs.400 against Rs.10 is yet to become popular. Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) along with Energy Efficiency Services Limited will jointly run this program. Energy Efficiency Services Limited is a joint venture project run by four public sector companies from energy sector.

BEE and Energy Efficiency Services Limited jointly in support with electricity distributing companies will purchase these LED bulbs from open market and will make the bulb available for the consumer at Rs.10 each.

Purchasing the LED bulb for Rs 400 each from open market and selling it to the electricity consumer for Rs.10 will incur heavy loss. These losses would be borne by the electricity distribution companies for next 5 to 8 years time. The saving that will happen after using the LED bulb will be adjusted against the losses.

Last week an agreement was signed between Andhra Pradesh State Government and Energy Efficiency Services Limited in which it has been mutually agreed upon to by 10 lakh LED bulbs.

All major LED manufacturing companies are eager to join this program of Union Ministry for which they are ready to cut down the LED price and sell it at just Rs.204 only.

Considering Union Ministries Energy Efficiency Program, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandra Babu Naidu last week initiated a program called “Demand Side Efficient Lighting Program” in which each house will be provided with two high efficiency LED bulbs. A target of 37 lakh houses where energy will be save is set.

The project has already been started in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh, with Anantpur, Western Godavari and Shrikakulam districts to follow.

The trio revolutionized lighting technology two decades ago when they came up with a long-elusive component of the white LED lights that in countless applications today have replaced less efficient incandescent and fluorescent lights.

Red and green light-emitting diodes have been around since the mid-20th century and have been used in applications such as watches and calculators. But scientists had struggled for decades to produce the shorter-wavelength blue LED needed in combination with the others to produce white light when the three laureates made their breakthroughs in the early 1990s.

Their work enabled LED lights — more efficient and long-lasting than previous light sources — to be used in a range of applications, including street lights, televisions and computers.

Akasaki, an 85-year-old professor at Meijo University and Nagoya University, said he had often been told that his research wouldn't bear fruit."But I never felt that way," he said. "I was just doing what I wanted to do."

Akasaki and Amano, 54, made their inventions while working at Nagoya University while Nakamura was working separately at Japanese company Nichia Chemicals. They built their own equipment and carried out thousands of experiments — many of which failed — before they made their breakthroughs.

A fundamental invention

LEDs contribute to saving the Earth's resources because about one-fourth of world electricity consumption is used for lighting purposes. They tend to last 10 times longer than fluorescent lamps and 100 times longer than incandescent light bulbs.

"The blue LED is a fundamental invention that is rapidly changing the way we bring light to every corner of the home, the street and the workplace — a practical invention that comes from a fundamental understanding of physics in the solid state,"
