Corduroy Reclining Chair... Not Cake, but Still

So, this is a cake blog and this post isn't about cake... in fact, it's not even about food. It is however about chocolate... a Napa Chocolate Corduroy Reclining Chair to be exact! We can all appreciate that can't we? lol

I love all things chocolate... even just the color makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. I also love a great recliner.

This corduroy beauty can be found at gowfb.com and currently ships free. I obtained my first recliner just this past Summer and it too came from Wholesale Furniture Brokers. I had an excellent experience with this online retailer and would definitely use them again. In fact, I hope to do just that and soon! They offer a user-friendly website and great customer service.

Additionally, their furniture is usually much less expensive than the competition... hence the name "Wholesale", which btw is one of my favorite words.

We'd love to replace our entire living room with new furniture. I could show you ours, but I don't want to scare anyone. I'm only slightly exaggerating.

We've always talked about going the way of leather and I'd never before considered a corduroy recliner, but I love the look of this set. The recliner by itself is only $589 and you can buy the entire trio for just $1839! I imagine it's very warm and soft, not cold like leather, but maybe not as kid friendly as leather?

Is this furniture set too dark for you or do you agree that chocolate is a wonderful thing? I'd like my next furniture set to be this color and then throw some colorful pillows on drapes at the room to bring it all together.

Happy Halloween from Cake Space! A Gluten Free Cake...

I made this cake with my son in mind. He's on a gluten-free, casein-free (milk protein) free diet. Thanks to Betty Crocker (yes I cheated), I was able to make this cake with very little effort. Their gluten-free boxed mix is also free of casein and tastes delicious! This single layer cake came from a single box, and the frosting (another cheat) came from a tub of Pillsbury chocolate frosting, which is also gluten and casein free!

Yummy and fun, we're still enjoying this cake today. I highly recommend Betty Crocker's gluten-free cake mix, and no... I'm not being paid to say so! lol

I made this cake for a wonderful friend of mine... the cake is banana chocolate chip with a chocolate butter cream center layered with meringue cookies. The roses were made using fondant. All other decorations are butter cream.

Nikon D300 Camera Shaped Cake

This was a fun cake to make... my first camera! It's covered in chocolate buttercream frosting, and includes a handful of fondant accents to give it some detail.

The cake is a combination of white and chocolate... in layers. I stacked 2 chocolate cakes around a white cake for the camera, and a layer of chocolate on white for the lens.

Toy Story Birthday Cake

One way to make a character cake is to find coloring book images you like, place them in a clear ziplock bag and layer fondant shapes over the image. Use vanilla extract and a small paint brush to connect the pieces, then carefully lift the image with a spatula and place on a freshly buttercreamed cake. Take it slow though... or you'll have fondant pieces everywhere!

This was my technique for this Toy Story birthday cake. I then used fondant writers to finish the eyes and display the birthday greeting.

This cake took me about 3 hours to make... including kitchen clean-up (but not counting baking time).

Toy Truck Cake... Mostly Edible!

When in a pinch for a cake topper... sometimes toys are the answer. I had originally intended on making a truck out of fondant, but ran short on time. This turned out to be a smart alternative. It was also a lot less expensive than the krispi treat/fondant covered truck I'd planned. What's more... the 2 year old for whom the cake given, could play with the car afterwords!

Happy belated birthday to my sweet little 8 year old! Sorry it took mommy over a month to throw you a suitable party! Also... hope you'll forgive me for not including the 20 munchkins you requested. Maybe next year? lol

50th Anniversary Cake

I really love this cake and btw... I don't often use words like "love" when speaking of one of my cakes. lol This cake eventually sported a 50th anniversary cake topper... but I don't have that photo available.

The beads and leaves are fondant covered in luster dust... the roses are simply white fondant. Very simple and elegant. Why I don't normally like to recreate the same cake twice... I think this piece of artwork might be the exception. :)

The Duff Goldman Cake Line Review... Brought to You by Cake Space!

I'm delighted to have been among the privileged cake decorators asked to sample a portion of the (new to the market) Duff Goldman line of cake decorating products. I can't begin to tell you how exciting it is to have a box of goodies sporting Duff's image on top!

My only regret is that it's taken me this long to finally get my review published to my cake blog, but it was so worth the wait... at least for me. lol I'm thrilled to finally have baked and covered a sweet heart of a cake for the Duff Goldman line.

So... here's what I was sent... a box of premium chocolate cake mix, a tub of red fondant, and a set of texture tiles for giving texture to fondant.

I was a bit intimidated by the fondant when I found it on the shelf at my local Micheal's craft store as it's more expensive than the brand I normally buy. Here's the thing though... Duff's fondant is actually GOOD! I usually only add fondant accents to my cakes, rather than covering the entire cake in fondant as I've never much cared for the taste, and given that adding fondant adds expense, why mess with it? However... Duff's fondant is worth paying for and messing with! lol It's only going to enhance your cake's taste and appearance, so I say go for it!

The free fondant shipped to my door was red, which is great because taking white fondant and coloring it red is a chore. Before this review, I'd never worked with pre-colored fondant... I've always colored it myself. Duff's fondant has a great feel to it and is not dry, like the other brand I'm familiar with. It doesn't easily rip or tear when draping over a cake and works well in layers... by that I mean if you're making fondant accents to place atop a freshly covered fondant cake, you may not even need a dab of water or vanilla extract to help it stick. One less step!

Just for fun I used the Texture Tiles to give my added hearts a bit of... well, texture! lol I have dedicated this heart cake to Duff and his fun (and tasty) new decorating product line.

My overall impression? I would definitely buy the fondant again. In fact, I'm already planning on it. The premium chocolate cake mix is very good too. I don't know how often I'll be able to swing the extra money to buy it though, as it's significantly more than what I currently use. Not that it's not worth that price, it's just not likely I'll purchase too many cake mixes down the road. Maybe on special occasions... like my wedding anniversary or my husband's birthday I'll splurge.

The Texture Tiles are fun and will be something I'll probably use again. They're of course reusable, assuming you don't place them in your dishwasher! lol I think they'll work nicely for small projects like this heart cake, so I'll be hanging on to them.

This cake is double-layer 8" heart-shaped design, which was just the right size for 1 Premium Chocolate Cake Mix. I had A LOT of extra fondant after covering and decorating... I think I could have decorated another cake of this size with the amount of fondant remaining.

If you'd like to have a little fun, visit Micheal's craft store and check out all the awesome Duff Goldman products. They even carry cake tattoos! lol I was really hoping to receive one in my goody box, but I'm almost over that disappointment. lol They look like a lot of fun and I even found a few at my local Walmart... which was a surprise! I didn't realize anyone other than Micheal's would be carrying Duff.

I hope you've enjoyed this review as much as I enjoyed providing it. I'll agree it was probably more fun for me though, because I actually get to help eat the cake! Can I just say YUMMY!!?

Duff Goldman's Product Line Review... Coming Soon!

I've been invited to sample and share my thoughts and experiences on a few of the exciting products from Duff Goldman's (Ace of Cakes) new line of cake decorating products! The much anticipated box recently made it's appearance at my front door and I was ever so eager to rip it open and hold the treasure in my greedy little hands, only to realize my camera wasn't working with my computer! Which means... I'm going to have a tough time posting photos of the product before, during and after I've created my next project. I just can't imagine not sharing a review with photos. I mean... what's the point?

With the help of a friend (aren't friends lovely?)... I hope to surpass this annoying issue and have the review up and going this time next week. Please revisit Cake Space at such time and witness in photos... yours truly having a blast with Duff's fondant, cake mix and another goody I can't wait to share with you. It will be a great time... don't you think?
