Basics on computer viruses

A Computer program line up with the aim of is loaded on your central processing unit with no your awareness, with the intent of liability a few wound to your arrangement. The effect of central processing unit viruses varies from liability so trivial wound with the aim of you are unacquainted with the aim of your central processing unit has been infected, to wiping banned the complete contents of your thick-skinned compact disk. Near are viruses which compete melody, show messages, adjustment or else delete collection.PC viruses are manmade and the largest part are intentionally designed to photocopy themselves. Once the virus line up runs it makes a replicate of itself and adds itself to an extra central processing unit line up. Both occasion the infected line up is run, the virus is besides run and in the sphere of this way spreads. If your arrangement is infected, you can definitely coverage the virus to others through shared disks and email attachments.

How get something done viruses happen as expected?

Crucial viruses typically rely on unwary computer users to inadvertently share before send off them. A quantity of viruses with the purpose of are other sophisticated, such in the function of worms, can duplicate and send off themselves unconsciously to other computers by calculating other software programs, such in the function of an e-mail sharing submission.

Dependable viruses, called Trojan horses, can falsely appear in the function of a beneficial encode to win over users into downloading them. A quantity of Trojans can even provide predictable results while quietly detrimental your approach before other networked computers next to the same instant.

Although it's obedient to come to pass aware of these discrete types of viruses and how they happen as expected, pardon? Is the majority critical is with the purpose of you keep your supercomputer software current with the most recent updates and antivirus tools, stay informed around up to date threats, and with the purpose of you be an enthusiast of a hardly any crucial rules what time surfing the Internet, downloading annals, and opening attachments.

As soon as a virus is on your computer, its type before the method it used to find in attendance is not in the function of disparaging in the function of removing it and preventing foster infection.

A destructive code so as to masquerades at the same time as a caring devotion. Unlike viruses, Trojan horses prepare not copy themselves but they can live truthful at the same time as destructive. Lone of the as a rule insidious types of Trojan horse is a code so as to claims to divest your supercomputer of viruses but as a replacement for introduces viruses on top of your supercomputer.
Shut down your computer immediately. This is the worst virus announced by CNN.

It has been classified by Microsoft as the most destructive virus ever. This virus was discovered by McAfee yesterday, and there is no repair yet for this kind of virus. This virus simply destroys the Zero Sector of the Hard Disc, where the vital information is kept.

COPY THIS E-MAIL, AND SEND IT TO YOUR FRIENDS.
REMEMBER: IF YOU SEND IT TO THEM, YOU WILL BENEFIT ALL OF US

20 things you didn't know about Windows XP

You've read the reviews and digested the key feature enhancements and operational changes. Now it's time to delve a bit deeper and uncover some of Windows XP's secrets.

1. It boasts how long it can stay up. Whereas previous versions of Windows were coy about how long they went between boots, XP is positively proud of its stamina. Go to the Command Prompt in the Accessories menu from the All Programs start button option, and then type 'systeminfo'. The computer will produce a lot of useful info, including the uptime. If you want to keep these, type 'systeminfo > info.txt'. This creates a file called info.txt you can look at later with Notepad. (Professional Edition only).

2. You can delete files immediately, without having them move to the Recycle Bin first. Go to the Start menu, select Run... and type 'gpedit.msc'; then select User Configuration, Administrative Templates, Windows Components, Windows Explorer and find the Do not move deleted files to the Recycle Bin setting. Set it. Poking around in gpedit will reveal a great many interface and system options, but take care -- some may stop your computer behaving as you wish. (Professional Edition only).

3. You can lock your XP workstation with two clicks of the mouse. Create a new shortcut on your desktop using a right mouse click, and enter 'rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation' in the location field. Give the shortcut a name you like. That's it -- just double click on it and your computer will be locked. And if that's not easy enough, Windows key + L will do the same.

4. XP hides some system software you might want to remove, such as Windows Messenger, but you can tickle it and make it disgorge everything. Using Notepad or Edit, edit the text file /windows/inf/sysoc.inf, search for the word 'hide' and remove it. You can then go to the Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel, select Add/Remove Windows Components and there will be your prey, exposed and vulnerable.

5. For those skilled in the art of DOS batch files, XP has a number of interesting new commands. These include 'eventcreate' and 'eventtriggers' for creating and watching system events, 'typeperf' for monitoring performance of various subsystems, and 'schtasks' for handling scheduled tasks. As usual, typing the command name followed by /? will give a list of options -- they're all far too baroque to go into here.

6. XP has IP version 6 support -- the next generation of IP. Unfortunately this is more than your ISP has, so you can only experiment with this on your LAN. Type 'ipv6 install' into Run... (it's OK, it won't ruin your existing network setup) and then 'ipv6 /?' at the command line to find out more. If you don't know what IPv6 is, don't worry and don't bother.

7. You can at last get rid of tasks on the computer from the command line by using 'taskkill /pid' and the task number, or just 'tskill' and the process number. Find that out by typing 'tasklist', which will also tell you a lot about what's going on in your system.

8. XP will treat Zip files like folders, which is nice if you've got a fast machine. On slower machines, you can make XP leave zip files well alone by typing 'regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll' at the command line. If you change your mind later, you can put things back as they were by typing 'regsvr32 zipfldr.dll'.

9. XP has ClearType -- Microsoft's anti-aliasing font display technology -- but doesn't have it enabled by default. It's well worth trying, especially if you were there for DOS and all those years of staring at a screen have given you the eyes of an astigmatic bat. To enable ClearType, right click on the desktop, select Properties, Appearance, Effects, select ClearType from the second drop-down menu and enable the selection. Expect best results on laptop displays. If you want to use ClearType on the Welcome login screen as well, set the registry entry HKEY_USERS/.DEFAULT/Control Panel/Desktop/FontSmoothingType to 2.

10. You can use Remote Assistance to help a friend who's using network address translation (NAT) on a home network, but not automatically. Get your pal to email you a Remote Assistance invitation and edit the file. Under the RCTICKET attribute will be a NAT IP address, like 192.168.1.10. Replace this with your chum's real IP address -- they can find this out by going to www.whatismyip.com -- and get them to make sure that they've got port 3389 open on their firewall and forwarded to the errant computer.

11. You can run a program as a different user without logging out and back in again. Right click the icon, select Run As... and enter the user name and password you want to use. This only applies for that run. The trick is particularly useful if you need to have administrative permissions to install a program, which many require. Note that you can have some fun by running programs multiple times on the same system as different users, but this can have unforeseen effects.

12. Windows XP can be very insistent about you checking for auto updates, registering a Passport, using Windows Messenger and so on. After a while, the nagging goes away, but if you feel you might slip the bonds of sanity before that point, run Regedit, go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Explorer/Advanced and create a DWORD value called EnableBalloonTips with a value of 0.

13. You can start up without needing to enter a user name or password. Select Run... from the start menu and type 'control userpasswords2', which will open the user accounts application. On the Users tab, clear the box for Users Must Enter A User Name And Password To Use This Computer, and click on OK. An Automatically Log On dialog box will appear; enter the user name and password for the account you want to use.

14. Internet Explorer 6 will automatically delete temporary files, but only if you tell it to. Start the browser, select Tools / Internet Options... and Advanced, go down to the Security area and check the box to Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed.

15. XP comes with a free Network Activity Light, just in case you can't see the LEDs twinkle on your network card. Right click on My Network Places on the desktop, then select Properties. Right click on the description for your LAN or dial-up connection, select Properties, then check the Show icon in notification area when connected box. You'll now see a tiny network icon on the right of your task bar that glimmers nicely during network traffic.

16. The Start Menu can be leisurely when it decides to appear, but you can speed things along by changing the registry entry HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Control Panel/Desktop/MenuShowDelay from the default 400 to something a little snappier. Like 0.

17. You can rename loads of files at once in Windows Explorer. Highlight a set of files in a window, then right click on one and rename it. All the other files will be renamed to that name, with individual numbers in brackets to distinguish them. Also, in a folder you can arrange icons in alphabetised groups by View, Arrange Icon By... Show In Groups.

18. Windows Media Player will display the cover art for albums as it plays the tracks -- if it found the picture on the Internet when you copied the tracks from the CD. If it didn't, or if you have lots of pre-WMP music files, you can put your own copy of the cover art in the same directory as the tracks. Just call it folder.jpg and Windows Media Player will pick it up and display it.

19. Windows key + Break brings up the System Properties dialogue box; Windows key + D brings up the desktop; Windows key + Tab moves through the taskbar buttons.

Norton Antivirus 2010 and Norton 360

Yes, you read it right, Symantec is offering free 90 days subscription license copies for two of it’s products the Norton Antivirus2010 and Norton 360 version 3. But unlike the deeper questions of life, this one isn't really all that hard to answer. For most users running Windows XP, NTFS is the obvious choice. It's more powerful and offers security advantages not found in the other file systems. But let's go over the differences among the files systems so we're all clear about the choice. There are essentially three different file systems available in Windows XP: FAT16, short for File Allocation Table, FAT32, and NTFS, short for NT File System.

    FAT16

The FAT16 file system was introduced way back with MS–DOS in 1981, and it's showing its age. It was designed originally to handle files on a floppy drive, and has had minor modifications over the years so it can handle hard disks, and even file names longer than the original limitation of 8.3 characters, but it's still the lowest common denominator. The biggest advantage of FAT16 is that it is compatible across a wide variety of operating systems, including Windows 95/98/Me, OS/2, Linux, and some versions of UNIX. The biggest problem of FAT16 is that it has a fixed maximum number of clusters per partition, so as hard disks get bigger and bigger, the size of each cluster has to get larger. In a 2–GB partition, each cluster is 32 kilobytes, meaning that even the smallest file on the partition will take up 32 KB of space. FAT16 also doesn't support compression, encryption, or advanced security using access control lists.

FAT32

The FAT32 file system, originally introduced in Windows 95 Service Pack 2, is really just an extension of the original FAT16 file system that provides for a much larger number of clusters per partition. As such, it greatly improves the overall disk utilization when compared to a FAT16 file system. However, FAT32 shares all of the other limitations of FAT16, and adds an important additional limitation—many operating systems that can recognize FAT16 will not work with FAT32—most notably Windows NT, but also Linux and UNIX as well. Now this isn't a problem if you're running FAT32 on a Windows XP computer and sharing your drive out to other computers on your network—they don't need to know (and generally don't really care) what your underlying file system is.

    The Advantages of NTFS

The NTFS file system, introduced with first version of Windows NT, is a completely different file system from FAT. It provides for greatly increased security, file–by–file compression, quotas, and even encryption. It is the default file system for new installations of Windows XP, and if you're doing an upgrade from a previous version of Windows, you'll be asked if you want to convert your existing file systems to NTFS. Don't worry. If you've already upgraded to Windows XP and didn't do the conversion then, it's not a problem. You can convert FAT16 or FAT32 volumes to NTFS at any point. Just remember that you can't easily go back to FAT or FAT32 (without reformatting the drive or partition), not that I think you'll want to.

The NTFS file system is generally not compatible with other operating systems installed on the same computer, nor is it available when you've booted a computer from a floppy disk. For this reason, many system administrators, myself included, used to recommend that users format at least a small partition at the beginning of their main hard disk as FAT. This partition provided a place to store emergency recovery tools or special drivers needed for reinstallation, and was a mechanism for digging yourself out of the hole you'd just dug into. But with the enhanced recovery abilities built into Windows XP (more on that in a future column), I don't think it's necessary or desirable to create that initial FAT partition.

    When to Use FAT or FAT32

If you're running more than one operating system on a single computer , you will definitely need to format some of your volumes as FAT. Any programs or data that need to be accessed by more than one operating system on that computer should be stored on a FAT16 or possibly FAT32 volume. But keep in mind that you have no security for data on a FAT16 or FAT32 volume—any one with access to the computer can read, change, or even delete any file that is stored on a FAT16 or FAT32 partition. In many cases, this is even possible over a network. So do not store sensitive files on drives or partitions formatted with FAT file systems.

Windows® Essencials Codec Pack

Windows Essentials Codec Pack, or WECP for short, is one of the most comprehensive collection of Media Codecs, Filters, Splitters and other tools that will enable you to play 99% of all the movies, music and flash files you download off the internet. First, it is profitable, second - less waste. Nevertheless, it is still not the best way to save resources - in fact still need to insert the plug into the outlet and use electricity. May soon follow Charger for finger batteries, which will use the sun's energy. How is it possible? Because the time being is a concept which, despite a successful idea which underlies it, may not be realized. Not all are willing to pay for more expensive solar panels, preferring to charge the batteries in the traditional way. Charger reNEW Solar Battery Charger has two slots: the upper is placed battery that needs recharging, which is charged, automatically drops out of the lower slot. Solar panels located on the rear of the device. Charging can be placed either on the table, as shown in the image, or using suction cups attach to the window.

About Bits and Bytes…

A bit is the most basic unit of information. At their most fundamental level, most modern computers operate on binary bits which means that they can have two states, usually specified as a 0 or 1. Long strings of these bits can be used to represent most types of information including text, pictures and music.

Most modern computers are binary systems and therefore, they are particularly well suited to working with bits. Pure binary information is of little use to humans. The binary number 11000101110 is equivalent to 1582. We are much more suited to working with digits and text instead of ones and zeros.

To help make computers more like our language-based way of thinking, groups of bits are joined into bytes. One byte is comprised of 8 bits. A set of 8 bits was chosen because this provides 256 total possibilities which is sufficient for specifying letters, numbers, spaces, punctuation and other extended characters. This very sentence, for example is composed of 125 bytes because there are 125 letters, digits, spaces and punctuation marks.

Note: Keep in mind that we are discussing pure text; some word processing programs, include other sorts of formatting data and therefore the filesizes will be greater than the number of characters in the file.

It is estimated that a kilobyte can accommodate about 1/2 of a typewritten page. Therefore, one full page requires about 2 kilobytes. The chart below illustrates the number of bytes in common terms such as kilobyte and megabyte and how much text could be stored:

* Kilobyte (kB) » 1,024 » 1/2 page.

* Megabyte (mB) » 1,048,576 » 500 pages or 1 thick book.

* Gigabyte (gB) » 1,073,741,824 » 500,000 pages or 1,000 thick books.

* Terabyte (tB) » 1,099,511,627,776 » 1,000,000 thick books.

* Petabyte » 1,125,899,906,842,624 » 180 Libraries of Congress.

* Exabyte » 1,152,921,504,606,846,976 » 180 thousand Libraries of Congress.

* Zettabyte » 1,180,591,620,717,411,303,424 » 180 million Libraries of Congress.

* Yottabyte » 1,208,925,819,614,629,174,706,176 » 180 billion Libraries of Congress.

Note: The Library of Congress in Washington D.C. is said to be the world’s largest library with over 28 million volumes. The numbers listed in the chart above are based on the assumption that the average book has 200 pages.

Most Compact Discs (CD) can hold approximately 750 megabytes (MB) which is roughly equivalent to 375,000 pages of text! DVDs can store 4.7 gigabytes (gB) or 2.3 million pages. The next generation of optical media, Blu-Ray discs, can hold an astonishing 27 gigabytes or 13.5 million pages which is roughly equivalent to the text contained in 67,500 books!

Data Measurement Chart

* Single Binary Digit (1 or 0) » Byte » 8 bits.

* Kilobyte (KB) » 1,024 Bytes » 8192 bits.

* Megabyte (MB) » 1,024 Kilobytes » 1048576 Bytes » 8388608 Bits.

* Gigabyte (GB) » 1,024 Megabytes » 1048576 KB » 1073741824 Bytes » 8589934592 Bits.

* Terabyte (TB) » 1,024 Gigabytes » 1048576 MB » 1073741824 KB » 1099511627776 Bytes » 8796093022208 Bits.

* Petabyte (PB) » 1,024 Terabytes » 1048576 GB » 1073741824 MB » 1099511627776 KB » 1125899906842624 Bytes » 9007199254740992 Bits.

* Exabyte (EB) » 1,024 Petabytes » 1048576 TB » 1073741824 GB » 1099511627776 MB » 1125899906842624 KB » 11522921504606846976 Bytes » 9223372036854775808 Bits.

via- google group

Get A Free Laptop

இவர்கள் நமக்கு வித்தியாசமாக லேப்டாப் வெல்லும் வாய்ப்பினை தருகிறார்கள்.

This is an amazing new technology that will enable extremely thin TV's with a contrast ratio that is about 100 times greater than the best consumer LCD's or Plasma's on the market today, thanks to the fact that they have no backlight. An advantageous side note of this means they are extremely power efficient. With tested response times of up to 0.01ms, which far exceed today's best. They are much brighter, with more vivid colors than existing TV's too.

Computer Viruses and Trojans

A virus is known to many as an agent that causes different diseases. They have many modes of infecting all of the members of the animal kingdom. Although there are different types of viruses, they have one commonality; they are all harmful. Nowadays, the term virus has taken a different turn when it comes to the meaning. Now, it is more commonly associated with anything that brings a computer to its demise or to something close to that.

Computer virus has to be the most popular phrase when the thought of internet comes to the minds of most people. The reason is that they remember the destruction it brings. Computers have changed the way all people live. It has become important in all aspects of living may it be politics, religion or business. Just when we thought it could not get better, the Internet came along. Among all of the benefits of the internet, the one that people are most happy about is how it made communication much easier. In the old days, the only connection you have to your loved ones in other countries is through mail or telephone. Now, there are more efficient and faster ways of communicating. You can send an e-mail or a private message which will only take a few seconds and your message will be received immediately.

This advancement took a tragic turn when someone smart enough decided to make a computer virus. A computer virus, sticking to the true meaning of the word virus, is something that infects a computer, jams its programs and causes many problems to the user. It can bring any time of destruction from a small computer glitch to making your whole computer system crash.

Sadly, there are many ways that a virus is transferred from one computer to another. Storage devices such as USB can be a medium to transfer a virus. If two or more computers are connected via a network connection, a virus can be transferred. The most devastating news is that not only can it be transferred offline; it can be transferred online too. The internet became the most notorious aspect of the computer when it comes to getting it infected.

This is why the whole world, or the people who uses computers, rejoiced at the birth of antiviruses. These are the programs that are designed to track down and get rid of computer viruses from its system. Now, there are many ways on how to protect your computer using antiviruses. Although there are many antivirus programs out in the market today, they have one common factor: they prioritize prevention. They gave importance of detecting a virus that is threatening to invade a computer so that they can block it before it can cause any harm. Now, antiviruses are also wise enough to detect viruses that are already in the computer before they were installed and delete or clean it.

Aside from antiviruses, the users can also follow guidelines to prevent their computer from getting infected such as don't access sites that are about pornography since most viruses are found here.
Most of the below tips works for windows

1. Wallpapers: They slow your whole system down, so if you’re willing to compromise, have a basic plain one instead!

2. Drivers: Update your hardware drivers as frequently as possible. New drivers tend to increase system speed especially in the case of graphics cards, their drivers are updated by the manufacturer very frequently!

3. Minimizing: If you want to use several programs at the same time then minimize those you are not using. This helps reduce the overload on RAM.

4. Boot Faster: The ’starting Windows 95/98′ message on startup can delay your booting for a couple of seconds. To get rid of this message go to c:\ and find the file Msdos.sys. Remove the Read-Only option. Next, open it in Notepad or any other text editor. Finally, go to the text ‘Options’ within the file and make the following changes: Add BootDelay=0. To make your booting even faster, set add Logo=0 to remove the Windows logo at startup.

5. Restart only Windows: When restarting your PC, hold down Shift to only restart Windows rather than the whole system which will only take a fraction of the time.

6. Turn Off Animations: Go to Display Settings from the Control Panel and switch to the Effects Tab. Now turn off Show Windows Content While Dragging and Smooth Edges on Screen Fonts. This tip is also helpful with Windows XP because of the various fade/scroll effects.

7. Faster Start-Menu Access: Go to the Start menu and select Run. Now type Regedit and hit Enter. The Registry Editor will appear on the screen. Now, open the folder HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop. You should see a MenuShowDelay value. If you don’t then do the following: right click on a blank space in the right pane and select New\String. Change the name in the new value to MenuShowDelay. Now that we have the MenuShowDelay value, double click on it and enter 0 in the value data field. This sets the start menu delay to 0 milliseconds.

8. Resolutions: If you are willing to do anything for faster performance from your PC, then try lowering your display resolution. The lower it is, the faster your PC.

9. Turn off Active Desktop: Go to your Display Properties and switch to the Web tab. Uncheck View My Active Desktop As a Web Page. Since the Active Desktop option under Windows 98 uses a lot of system resources, this option can have a dramatic effect on the speed of the whole system.

10. Defragment Often: Windows 98’s Defrag tool uses Application Acceleration from Intel which means that when you defragment your drive, data is physically arranged on the drive so that applications will load faster.

11. Take your PC to Bed: Using the Advanced Power Management feature under Windows 98 gives you the option to use the sleep command. That way, you can send your PC to sleep instead of shutting it down and then restarting it. It’s as simple as pressing a button and then pressing the same button to wake it up. You can tell Windows after how many minutes/hours of inactivity to automatically sleep the machine in the Advanced Power Management section of the Control Panel.

12. Faster Internet Access: If you use the internet for reference and the sites you visit are rarely updated then try the following. In IE (the same can be done in Netscape) go to Tools, Internet Options. Next, click on Settings… in the Temporary Internet Files section. Finally, select Never for the first option and double the amount of storage space to use, click OK!

13. Benchmarking: Benchmarking can be very useful when run frequently. It can tell you how your PC’s components are performing and then compare them to other machines like yours. For example, when you overclock your PC, you want to know how much more speed you have and whether it is stable. All this and more can be discovered using benchmarking. An excellent piece of software for doing this job is SiSoft Sandra which can be found in the Downloads File Archive!

14. Refresh the Taskbar without restarting: If you in some way change the taskbar, either in Regedit or elsewhere, you can refresh the task bar without restarting. Hold down Ctrl Alt Del, and double click on Explorer. Say Yes to close Explorer, but no to closing Windows. This will refresh the Taskbar and system tray.

15. Quick CD Eject: Instead of pushing the button on your drive, right-click your CD drive letter in My Computer and click on Eject. This will also remove any icons that have become associated with the CD drive.

16. Start Up Programs: Windows can be slowed down when programs run on start up. To eliminate this, check your Start up folder. You can access it from the start menu: Start, Programs, Start Up. Another way to eliminate programs from loading even before Windows actually starts is by doing the following: Click on Start, then Run. Type msconfig. It will take quite a long time for this program to load, but when you finally see it on your screen, explore the different tabs. They all have to do with how quickly your PC boots, so select what you want, and uncheck what you don’t want!

17. Fonts: When Windows starts, it loads every single font in the Fonts folder. Therefore, the more fonts you have, the slower the booting process. To get rid of unwanted fonts, simply go to the Fonts folder under c:\windows and remove whatever you don’t want. Fonts that have a red letter ‘A’ as their icon are system fonts, so don’t delete them.

18. Stretching Wallpapers: Don’t “stretch” your wallpaper in Windows 98 since it actually slows Windows down when you drag icons around on the desktop.

19. RAM Matters: If you have less than 32MB then you should seriously think of upgrading it to at least 64MB. Windows runs much more smoothly with 64MB or higher and tends to use less hard disk space for virtual memory.

20. Partitioning: A very nice little thing you can do to boost system performance. By partitioning your hard drive, splitting one physical drive into several logical ones, you can gain several advantages. 1. If you get a virus or you accidentally format a drive, not all will be lost. 2. By placing the swap file (Win386.swp) on a separate drive, The swap file will be less fragmented and thus, faster. 3. Place Windows on a separate drive and whenever you need to reinstall it, you rest assured that your data is safe on a separate drive. Partitioning can be done using a few programs such as FDisk which comes with DOS. However, FDisk formats everything on the hard disk before partitioning. Alternatively, you can use Partition Magic from Power Quest to partition your hard disk without losing your data.

10 Tips For the Internet Explorer (IE)

THE TASKBAR RELOADED:

Windows7’s version of the Taskbar is less cluttered than Vista’s, and it handles both running and nonrunning apps with equal aplomb.

2. SLICKER, QUICKER TASKBAR PREVIEWS:
Now they show you all of an application’s open windows, all at once.

3.THE CONVENIENCE OF JUMP LISTS:

These context-sensitive Taskbar menus let you start accomplishing things in applications before you even open them.

4. A SYSTEM TRAY YOU CAN LOVE:

New controls prevent the System Tray from overflowing with unwanted apps and distracting you with unhelpful, irrelevant messages.

5. A MORE MEDIA-SAVVY WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER:

Love Apple’s iTunes Store but hate iTunes? New file-format support enables Windows Media Player 12 to play back unprotected audio and video from Apple’s online store.

6. ALERTS VIA ACTION CENTER:

Windows7’s version of Vista’s Security Center queues up system messages so that you can respond to them on your schedule—not when Windows feels like interrupting you.

7. USER ACCOUNT CONTROL THAT YOU CONTROL:

If you’re okay with this security feature’s raison d’être but can’t stand the rapid-fire prompts in Vista, take heart: You can tune Windows 7’s versions to make them less paranoid and intrusive.

8. LIBRARY PRIVILEGES:

You can bundle folders from locations all across your hard drive into Libraries designed to provide one-click access from the left pane of Windows Explorer to related files.

9. REASONABLE HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS:

Historically, new versions of Windows have gobbled up twice the amount of CPU power and RAM that their predecessors did. But Windows 7 runs a bit better than Vista on the same system; it’s even tolerable on a netbook.

10. THE POTENTIAL OF TOUCH:

Windows 7’s support for multitouch input doesn’t change anything overnight—but it does lay necessary groundwork for thirdparty developers to build their own software. If they build killer touch apps, Windows 7 deserves some of the credit.

How to Backup Data in Windows XP and Vista?

Backing up Data in Windows XP:

A backup wizard is provided with the Windows package which is very helpful to create a backup copy of your important documents.

Note: If you have Windows XP Professional, Backup utility is installed by default but in Windows XP Home it is not. However, Backup utility is provided with the CD.

Go to CD-ROM Drive:\VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP and double click Ntbackup.msi to start the Backup utility.

Follow this procedure to backup data using Backup utility:

Step 1: Click Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Backup.
Step 2: Click Next in the first page and choose ‘Back up Files and Settings’ in the second page.
Step 3: In the third page, you will be asked what to backup. If you have the habit of keeping all important files in your ‘My Documents’ folder and you want to backup only important files then choosing ‘My documents and settings’ would be more appropriate. Else if you want to manually choose the files and folders you want to backup, choose the option ‘Let me choose what to backup’.

Step 4: If you are manually choosing the folders, click all the folders you want to backup.
Step 5: On the next screen you will be asked to choose the backup type, Destination and Name. You won’t be using Tapes or Floppy Disks. You may select an external hard disk or another partition in the same hard disk. If the backup file size is small you may choose small portable pen drive such as USB hard drives.
Step 6: Windows XP does not support to write the backup file to a CD directly. So if you want to have the backup in a CD or DVD, create the backup file in the same hard disk and burn it in a CD or DVD.

If you have dedicated external hard disk for backup you can set a schedule to backup regularly. On the last page of backup utility before clicking Finish, Click Advanced -> When to Back up -> Later -> Set Schedule -> Schedule Job. Set the schedule and Click Ok.

Backing up Data in Windows Vista:

In Vista taking a backup is much easier than Windows XP. Vista allows taking backup in CD and DVD as well.

Follow this procedure to backup data using Backup utility:

Step 1: Go to Control Panel -> ‘Backup and Restore Centre’ and Choose Backup Files.
Step 2: Windows will search all possible places where you can take a backup copy and it will list it the next screen. If you want to take the backup in the network, you can browse and choose the destination for backup.
Step 3: Choose the drives you want to backup and choose the type of files you want to backup. System files, executable files won’t be backed up and backup can be done only from NTFS region.
Step 4: In the next screen choose how often you want to take backup and click ‘Save settings and start backup’.

Tips on taking Backup:

1) One can actually just write all the files he wants to have a backup copy in a DVD or an external hard disk, but why use backup utility? That’s because when you do it manually, every time you do a change in a file or folder you have to keep track of it and do the same changes in the backup copy. But when you use the backup utility, the Windows keeps track of it and does all the work for you. With its fully automated capability, it’s the easiest thing around.

2) An ideal method of using backup utility will be to take the backup of documents using the backup utility and to copy the files such as Audio files, Video files and pictures in a DVD as the capacity of DVD is increasing day by day.

3) Backup regularly or use scheduled backup facility.

4) If you are using more than one medium for backup, keep a track of what you are backing-up and where you are taking the backup.

5) Keep another copy of important files in a smaller device like pen drive, So that you can carry it around very easily. But remember to use security utilities to keep the content under lock or encrypted.

6) Lots of online storage spaces are available for free and huge volumes are available for premium. This acts not only as a backup device but also as a central system where you can access your data from anywhere.

7) As I said earlier, take a backup and backup the backup.

Our every day lives are being driven by the world wide web no matter what corner of the globe we are located. Most people are online for at least 2-3 hours a day, and if you are like me who likes to spend hours browsing online, then there is no limit. You are aware of your ISP or Internet Service Provider who gives you the Internet connection. Depending on the schemes, you may be using one of the following – a 54 kbps dial-up connection, 128 kbps ISDN connection, or a 256 kbps to 2 mbps DSL connection or high speed cable broadband connection. If you are like me, you sometimes feel like your Internet is too slow whenever watching a favorite video clip on YouTube or having a video chat session with your friend. You may even consider changing your internet connection plan to another high speed one. You may not be aware of the fact that your Internet connection and your browser can be optimized to give you an ultimate experience with an enhanced browsing speed. There are many methods which can get the job done for you, but we will discuss only those which are used and proven by experts. Lets gets started with the following: First click to “Run” on the “Start” menu and type “gpedit.msc”. Hit enter and the following window will pop up.

Browsing Speed

This window is the place where the computer administer configures various desktop settings for a particular system on the network such as start menu options, desktop properties, how different programs are associated with a particular desktop, etc. If you are not on a network and using your system yourself then obviously you are the system administer for your system, and you need to go for “Local Computer Policy” which defines the desktop configuration for the current system on which the steps are being executed. So, the next thing to do is to click on the “Administrative Templates” under “Computer Configuration” option. Whatever changes you make here are directly associated with the registry settings and so you must be very much careful before making any changes. The next window will open up,

Increase Browsing Speed

You can see there are four items listed on the right panel, “Windows Component”, “System”, “Network” and “Printers”. Administrative Templates are nothing but simple text files to provide policy information for a particular item in the list. The files are stored on the system with an extension of “.adm”. There are mainly four types of .adm files available on your system, each of which is designed for specific tasks. These are – “System.adm”, “Inetres.adm”, “Wmplayer.adm” and “Conf.adm”. Now, we are interested in only “System.adm” files which are required to configure the system, the network, printers and Windows components. Among them, we are only interested in “Network” system.adm files. These system.adm files define the way a client computer connects to the network. This involves various configurations issues with DNS (Domain Name Server) and offline files. Some of them are “DNS Client”, “Network Connections”, “Offline files”, “QoS Packet Schedulers”, “SNMP”, Background Intelligent Transfer Service” and “DFS Client Settings”. We are interested in “QoS Packet Schedulers”. QoS stands for Quality of Service. This setting is used to define the priority of various applications running on your system. Based on the priority a specific application receives, bandwidth is allocated to it. Mainly QoS aware applications are considered under this setting. When you click on the “QoS Packet Scheduler” on the right panel, the followings options will show up,

Increase Browing Speed

You will see the following entry in the list, “Limit reservable bandwidth”. This option determines what percentage of your total bandwidth is reserved by the system for various system specific tasks like automatic windows update or antivirus update. You will see the entry “Not configured” under the state column i.e. the system is still using the default settings. When no settings have been specified by the local user, windows keeps 20% of the total bandwidth available for this task. It’s this 20% of your bandwidth which we are after. You have to make your system give you back this 20% bandwidth! So click on it,

Increase Browsing Speed

The above window will open up which allows you to change the default settings for this item of “QoS Packet Scheduler”. If you see that the “Not Configured” option is checked in, then check the “Enabled” option and the lower percentage selector dropdown box will be activated. Make sure you reduce it to “0%”. It’s shown in the following screenshot,

Increase Browing Speed

Now click on “Ok” and all the settings will be in effect once you restart your computer. The next time you log onto your computer, you will experience an enhanced browsing speed. This trick is mostly beneficial for users who are using lower bandwidth connections like dial-up, ISDN or DSL. They can really use this extra 20% bandwidth from their internet connection. However, if you are a high speed internet user, why do you want to let your Windows reserve a significant portion of your total bandwidth. There are always ways in which you can make use of this extra bandwidth!

Thank You lovebeats.org

About Windows XP

<o:smarttagtype namespaceuri="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" name="PlaceType"></o:smarttagtype><o:smarttagtype namespaceuri="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" name="PlaceName"></o:smarttagtype><o:smarttagtype namespaceuri="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" name="place"></o:smarttagtype>
Q: What is Windows XP

A: Windows Whistler is the codename for the first joint business/consumer version of Windows built on the Windows 2000 OS kernel for stability and reliability. To bring the reliability of Windows 2000 to consumers as soon as possible and address the feedback from enterprise customers, Microsoft planned a phased release of Windows XP beginning with the desktop products and followed by the server versions. Windows XP is their first step in the Microsoft .Net vision.

Q: Is Microsoft Windows XP available in multiple languages?

A: Windows XP Professional will be available in 24 official localized versions in addition to English. In any version of Windows XP Professional, you can display, input, edit, and print documents in hundreds of languages. Users or administrators can set regional preferences, fonts, keyboard layouts, sorting orders, date formats, and so on.

The biggest innovation for multilingual computing is the Windows XP Multilingual User Interface Pack, which is an add–on to the English version of Windows XP Professional. It lets users or administrators switch the User Interface (menus, dialogs and help files) from one language to another. This feature greatly eases desktop administration in multilingual computing environments, and lowers cost of desktop change and configuration management considerably. The Multilingual User Interface Pack will be available in 33 languages.

Q: What version of DirectX does Windows XP ship with?

A: Windows XP ships with DirectX 8.1, which improves pixel shaders among other things.

Q: What is the difference between the 32 bit and 64 bit versions?

A: The 64-bit versions will only work on newer Intel Itanium based hardware. The 32-bit versions will work on all x86 compatible hardware (such a Pentium III, 4, etc).

Q: What is the official website?

A: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp

Q: What is “Whistler Embedded”?

A: “Whistler Embedded” delivers all the richness, innovation and reliability of the next generation of Windows in a componentized version, enabling embedded developers to select specific technology components required for a wide range of unique Windows Powered devices. Beta 1 is focused on delivering embedded client scenarios, including Windows-based terminals, advanced set-top boxes and retail point-of-sale kiosks. Longhorn isn’t expected to hit stores till 2004 or later (probably later), so expect a second service pack in the works soon!

Q: What were the milestones in Windows XP development?

A: There were 6 major steps in the development of Windows XP:

Beta 1 – October 31, 2000, build 2296

Beta 2 – March 25, 2001, build 2462a

RC1 – June 29, 2001, build 2505

RC2 –   July 28, 2001, build 2526

RTM – August 24, 2001, build 5.10.2600

SP1 RTM – August 30, 2002

Q: Does Windows XP have a new Graphic User Interface (GUI)?

A: Yes, Windows XP will have a “newer” look to it but will still have the basics of Windows we have grown accustomed to. The one that is debuted at the EMP is the “Luna” theme.

Q: What features does SP1 include?

A: Although Microsoft has developed a habit of not including new features, Windows XP SP1 was an exception to that rule. It included support for USB 2.0 and included a nifty, government-required tool that will let you hide MS products, if you want. It also included support for other version of Windows, like Media Center and Windows Powered Smart Displays editions (codenames Freestyle and Mira, respectively). Windows XP SP1 also includes bug fixes and other general improvements.

Q: Where can I download SP1?

A: SP1 should be available to download from Windows Update, but if you would like to order a CD or download the entire file, both can be obtained from Microsoft’s website.

Q: What are some of the new visual features, what did they change?

A: The taskbar has been overhauled (icon grouping), and a new uncluttered notification area. Only the recycle bin is on the desktop – the rest are kept in a new, larger start menu.

Q: But what if we want to keep the classic look?

A: Well, luckily, it seems that you can keep either the classic look or the newer, XP look as default. The GUI should be sinkable to developers.

Q: What is fast user switching?

A: This is a new feature included in Windows XP. “Based on the Windows 2000 profiles, user accounts are created for all users during installation. As the default, passwords are not required, although users can create them if desired. A friendly new welcome screen featuring user names and pictures or icons rather than code names or aliases replaces the logon dialog box. Further, a new control panel applet makes it easy to add and edit user accounts. Each user has their own settings, including wallpaper, music, pictures, favorites, and so forth. In fast user switching, multiple users do not have to not log off when using a single computer. Instead, their accounts are always logged on, and they can switch quickly between all open accounts.”

Q: Do you have a feature list from a developer’s point of view?

A: Windows XP employs Windows 2000 power management features

Graphics Device Interface Plus (GDI+) is the portion of Microsoft Windows.NET that provides two-dimensional vector graphics, imaging, and typography. GDI+ improves on GDI (the graphics device interface included with earlier versions of Windows) by adding new features and by optimizing existing features.

64 bit compatibility

Support for high density displays

Q: What are the design goals for Windows XP? What will it improve?

A: Richer communications. Real-time voice, video and application-sharing will enable people to communicate more effectively.

Enhanced mobility. Mobile users’ ability to access their information any time, anywhere will be further improved.

Improved help and support. Users will be able to easily connect to people and resources for help whenever they need it.

Simple digital photos and video. Windows XP will make it easy to create, organize and share digital memories.

Exciting music and entertainment. Windows XP will deliver the best experience for the discovery, download, personalization and playback of high-quality audio and video content. Enabling of the “connected home.” Windows XP will give people an easy way to share information, devices and Internet connections within the home.

Q: Will most of my programs from Windows 9* work in Windows XP?

A: Most programs that work on Windows 95/98/Me and NT will work on versions of Windows XP. As with Windows 2000, several compatibility updates are sure to made after the product is released. There will be problems running older DOS programs (if they will run at all).

Q: If I am a games player, should I go for Windows 2000 or Windows XP?

A: Definitely go for Windows XP for the simple reason that it is designed for both the business & consumer thus is more adept at games playing.

Q: What are Win32 classes? How many new ones are released with Windows XP?

A: Microsoft Win32 classes give you the means to manipulate a variety of objects. Objects can be divided into four main categories. There are 40 new ones. Check out the info here.

Of course, the day when such a concept could be put into practice, will not soon, despite the existing achievements in the field of flexible OLED-screens. The idea is simple - there is a small tube with a wire, standard connectors and speakers.
