Congressional District Art Competition

Each year, members of the U.S. House of Representatives sponsor a nationwide high school arts competition. The Derrell C. Roberts Library and the Creative Arts Guild of Dalton will host the competition for the Ninth Congressional District in honor of Representative Tom Graves, as an opportunity to recognize and encourage the artistic talent in our area.

An Artistic Discovery: The Congressional Art Competition is open to all high school students. Each high school or home school in the Ninth District may submit one work to be considered for the national exhibit. Students submit entries to their school first and then the school submits its winning entry at one of the following locations by Wednesday, February 1,2012:

Roberts Library of Dalton State College, Dalton, Georgia

Monday – Friday, 8 am - 5 pm

Dalton State Gilmer County Center, Ellijay, Georgia

Monday – Friday, 8 am - 3 pm

Rep. Graves’ Gainesville office, Gainesville, Georgia

Monday – Friday, 9 am - 5 pm

A panel of judges from the Creative Arts Guild and Dalton State faculty will select three award-winning artworks. The first-place winner will have the honor of exhibiting in the United States Capitol. Dalton State College and Representative Graves will host a reception at the Roberts Library to announce the winners of the Congressional Art Competition. The reception will be held on Wednesday, March 14, 2012 from 7:00-8:00 pm.

International Education Week Events

Among the events planned at Dalton State are a free screening of the 2001 French romantic comedy “Amelie” on Thursday, November 17 at 7 p.m. at the College’s Goodroe Auditorium of Gignilliat Memorial Hall. The film, which has English subtitles, was nominated for five academy awards and was named “Best Film” at the European Film Awards.

“Amelie” is set in Montmartre and tells the story of a young French girl, Amelie, played by Audrey Tautou, who sets out to perform random acts of kindness for people in her village and is rewarded with love and adventure. The film is directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet.

Math Problem of the Week

The Department of Mathematics at Dalton State College has launched an online “Math Problem of the Week” and invites readers to test their computational knowledge.

In addition to the Math Problem of the Week, there is the Challenge Problem of the Week which amps up the difficulty factor. Both appear on the Dalton State website (www.daltonstate.edu/math-problem-of-the-week/)

For now, the only prize for being first to solve the problem or the challenge is glory and bragging rights, but that may change at some point.

The Math Forum: Student Center is a collection of activities, puzzles, games, weekly challenges, and other resources for mathematics students from preschool through graduate school. The Student Center also includes the the Ask Dr. Math question and answer service and The Math Library.

Art in the Library Exhibit

Faculty members Dr. Kent Harrelson, Dr. Leslie Harrelson, Dr. Marsha Mathews, and Jody Trost have artwork on display in the Derrell C. Roberts Library. Their works are part of the Art in the Library exhibit, an ongoing effort by the Roberts Library to promote the creative achievements of our talented campus artists.

Carlos, Lupe and Caroline, an oil painting by Dr. Kent Harrelson, depicts a family outing at a local park. Photographs and drawings by Dr. Leslie Harrelson explore the movement and development of the physical form through the practice of martial arts. Text as work of art best describes the beautiful collection of poetry by Dr. Marsha Mathews, and Jody Trost celebrates cultural heritage with a ceremonial dance fan.

Domestic Violence Conference
“Working Together: The Key to Ending Domestic Violence” is the theme of the Fifth Annual Domestic Violence Conference to be hosted Friday, Oct. 21 at Dalton State College.
Cost of the daylong conference is $35 (includes lunch) for those who register before Oct. 19; after that date, it will be $45 and will not include lunch. To access the many titles available in EBSCOhost:
1. Log in to GALILEO and select the Databases A-Z tab.
2. Select the letter "E" from the alphabetical listing or type in "EBSCOhost"in the search box.
3. Scroll down and select the eBooks on EBSCOhost link.
