12 Upcycled Ornaments of Christmas | Day 12

For this last post of The Odd Show's 12 Upcycled ornaments of Christmas I (Dawn) have somewhat ventured away from tins and tin lids. For this ornament I used the top of an old plastic spice jar. I noticed that the holes in this little round of plastic were in the shape of a star so I decided to make a star decoration. I found some thin cardboard packaging in the recycling bin to cut star shapes out of to frame the shaker. Also used were Adirondack alcohol inks, Bic Mark its, aluminum foil, ScraPerfect best glue ever, Beacon glue, Dollarstore glitter embedded paper and metallic chenille stem.

The foil covered cardboard was colored with the alcohol inks and markers as was the shaker lid. The glittered paper was inserted behind the lid so the glitter sparkles through the holes. Everything was glued together using a product called Best Glue Ever although when it came time to glue the metallic chenille stem I automatically grabbed my Beacon because I know it works well and quickly with this material. This ornament was very simple to make but it is very sparkly and shiny and will look pretty on the tree.

Day 11 and today I am showing my Family ornament for 2012. Every year I try to make a Family ornament and this year I made an upcycled ornament.

I started this on the Reboot:

Materials:

Old CD/DVD
Cereal Box
Naughty or Nice Paper from A.J.'s Digi Shoppe
Tim Holtz Distress Ink - Pine Needles and Festive Berries
Paper Egg Carton
Ribbon
Beacon 3-IN-1 Glue
Scissors
Exacto Knife
Yellow Seed Beads
Green Glitter Glue

I created the base on the show and wanted to share how I finished it. The backside was really plain and I wanted to add something to balance it out. I made and egg carton poinsettia, I took the same concept of the tea candle poinsettia I did a couple years ago and modified it for the egg carton. It went together much quicker than the tea candle poinsettia. After it was finished I added Festive Berries Distress Ink to color it red.

12 Upcycled Days of Christmas Ornaments | Day 10

Today I wanted to share with you an upcycled ornament that I created back in July this year while celebrating Christmas in July. I'm using one of my favorite upcycle materials Water Bottles! I hope you enjoy this tutorial replay!~leslierahye

Happy Monday everyone! I am enjoying crafting for for the holidays to get my mind off these 100°+ weather. I choose July to begin my projects for the holidays so that I can take my time and do crafting with my kids along the way.

Today we made ornaments and light reflectors for our holiday tree. The best part about this project...it's upcycled water bottles!!! The bottoms of water and soda bottles, Sakura Hobby Crafts 3D Crystal Lacquer, Terri Sproul's Mixers, Glitter and Want2Scrap Bling make beautiful ornaments and lights! I can't wait to put up my tree completely this year to show off my new sparklies!

The Process

for this project you will need:

empty bottles
Sakura Hobby Crafts 3D Crystal Lacquer
Terri Sproul Mixers
Ultra Fine Glitter

With sharp scissors, cut the bottoms off of the bottles.

trim them close to the turn of the bottle to get the scallop edge.

Mix the lacquer and the mixers for your snowflake ornaments and reflectors.

For my tree I used aquamarine, rose and purple. I applied 2 to 3 coats of lacquer

Mix glitter and lacquer to paint several coats onto the backs of

several blank bottoms and onto some of the already painted bottoms too.

Those painted with JUST GLITTER next had a coat of silver mixer applied
to make the reflectors.

The bottle bottoms looks fabulous and sparkly...

They are ready to be made into reflectors and ornaments

For those made into reflectors, drill a hole into the center
big enough to fit the light.

For those being transformed into ornaments, glitter the
tops of the bottles and add BLING! To add string to the
ornaments, cut a hole in one spot and thread it through.

Booga (my son who is 3) has a slight obsession with anything trains or Angry Birds. Honestly who can blame him that bird game is so much fun.

Items needed for the Yellow Bird:
3 Craft Sticks
Cereal Box
Dot Markers, Markers or Paint
White Paper
Pipe Cleaners

The first thing I did was let Booga make "paper" with his Dot Markers (if you are not familiar with Dot Markers they are like Bingo Dabbers). I drew two triangles and told him to fill them in.

I put the craft sticks together in the shape of a triangle and covered each side with the cereal box (shiny side in). Once the dot marker paper has dried cut out the triangles and glue to the cardboard. Add beak, eyes from stamped paper.

While scrounging in my 'junk drawer' I came across what appeared to be a lid for a candle that came from the dollar store in a tin. In the same drawer I came across a pewter angel pendant with a broken 'loop'. I cut the loop off with my Tim Holtz Tonic scissors and altered the color of the angel and lid with Ranger Adirondack alcohol inks and Bic Mark Its. I used paper from an old farmer's almanac enhanced with distress inks and Perfect Pearls mist as a base for both the front and back of the ornament. I used my HOTP template #7339 to fold up a pretty star made out of almanac paper, which i then glittered using Martha Stewart artist glue pen and Dollar store glitter. A making memories brad was altered with Bic Mark Its and added to the 3D star. Everything was glued onto the lid with ScraPerfect Best Glue Ever. A small scrap of gold cord was used as a hanger. I am pleased with the sparkle factor of this ornament, especially since it is was so simple to make.

Today I am sharing with you a "plan b" to my original idea of a ball shaped ornament of stars. Originally, as stated in the attached video, I was going to make 12 of these and assemble them in a ball shape. I got all 12 made however the nature of the materials caused a colossal craft fail and I went back to the drawing board with my upcycled book paper star ornament. I decided to go with just one star, glittered and attached to a string. I love the simplicity of it. [note: I will reattempt the star ball at a later date with less brittle paper and share the results but at this time the one star makes me quite happy ]

12 Upcycled Ornaments of Christmas | Day 6

Dawn here. I've used the bottom of my Altoid's tin to make a second ornament for our upcycled ornaments series. Altering this tin has been alot of fun and, at times, quite challenging. Blue alcohol ink was added to the inside of the tin then spritzed with perfect pearls mist. Please be very careful if you use your heat tool on your tin for any reason, (I used it to dry the mist,) because your tin will become very hot!! Layered next were some cardstock scraps stamped and embossed with snowflakes and colored with distress inks. Bic Mark Its were used to alter the color to some star shaped bling and some metallic confetti snowflakes, which were glued in next.

I wanted to add an element of 3 Dimensionality to the piece so I added in some really cute stars that came in a dollarstore embellishment kit. This proved to be harder than I thought it would be. After many tries I sewed the stars onto a strip of glittered craft foam that I glued in the tin. The inside edges were finished with glittered craft foam.

The ouside edge was covered in metallic chenille stems, and a hanger was formed from one as well. I carefully punched a hole in the end of the tin to create a place to insert a hanger. If you choose to punch any metal tins in your home, plese take every precaution, including using safety glasses. Stay safe crafters, and enjoy turning your old 'stuff' into pretty decorations.

I am still playing with bottle caps and hot glue (I have the burn marks to prove it).

Materials:

18 Bottle Caps (if you can get at least 9 the same it will work great)

Hot Glue Gun/Hot Glue Sticks

Pipe Cleaner

Ribbon

I put this together on my show last Thursday:

After the wreath was finished I glued ribbon around the outside and inside of the wreath to give it a finished look. I also too a thin ribbon and wrapped in between of the wreath to hide the gaps and to create a hanger. I added the Red, White and Blue bow to the top.

My husband has claimed this particular wreath (sorry, his favorite beer and all) but I have enough bottle caps to make a couple more.

Leslie-Rahye bringing you another ornament that I worked on this week. I have been a hoarder of missing puzzle pieces [kinda like Amanda and her bottle caps, only different]. I love these projects for creating simple holiday ornaments.

For my ornament you need :

Puzzle pieces

glue & glitter & buttons
paint, mists and stamps

hemp string

hole punch

I painted and misted my puzzle pieces green or white depending on if it was going to be a snowflake or a wreath. I stamped some visual textures with swirls. I then glued my pieces into snowflake or a wreath shape. Glitter and buttons of course enhanced the snowflake and became berries for the wreath. I added a hemp hanger to add my upcycled ornament to my tree!

12 Upcycled Ornaments of Christmas | Day 3 - Tin Lid

The lid of an Altoid's mint tin was used a base to house much glitter and a jolly sentiment for my first contribution to this upcycled ornament series. All of my embellishments came from my local dollarstore, except for the sentiment which was stamped in VersaMark ink on cardstock. Glitter foam was my background for die cut holly leaves and bling berries, which were colored with Bic Mark Its. The metallic chenille stems added the finishing touch and the much needed hanger. This is a simple and effective way to use some of those tins that you may have been ~~hoarding~~, I mean craft stashing.

Dollarstore items used: chenille stems, glitter foam, die cuts, bling, silver paint pen

12 Upcycled Ornaments of Christmas | Day 2--Bottle Cap Christmas Tree

I was really excited when Leslie introduced this challenge primarily because I have an abundance of bottle caps that I have been trying to use.

My project is very simple and can be put together in 20 minutes.

Materials:

7 Bottle Caps
Hot Glue/Hot Glue Gun
Buttons
Scrap Paper for the back (1" circle punch helps too)
3D Crystal Lacquer
Ribbon

Arrange the bottle caps like a tree.

Carefully hot glue the bottle caps together. Add button to the front side of the tree. Add the scrap paper to the back side of the tree and top with 3D Crystal Lacquer to seal the paper. Attach Ribbon to the to of the "tree"and hang on the tree.

It was a simple, cute ornament and it made a small dent in my bottle cap surplus!

For my ornament you need :

2 toilet paper rolls cut into ¾" strips

3 iridescent chenille stems

glue & glitter

hemp string

hole punch

I simply poked a hole at the top and bottom of each flattened strip about ½" in. I arranged the "petals" into a circle stinging the onto the chenille stem. After I get them arranged like I want them, I close up my circles by twisting the stems. I glue and glitter the top--painting, misting, stamping,etc would all be fabulous ways to finish off the petals--either before they are strung together or after. I added a hemp bow and hanger to add my upcycled ornament to my tree!
