With the onset of the New Year, Dubai carriers Emirates and flydubai have launched an aggressive sales campaign, reducing airfares by up to 35 per cent.

Emirates’ global sale is for a limited time as bookings have to be made between today to January 18, 2016, for travel until November 30, 2016. Terms and conditions apply.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Airlines Bhd has come out to say that its decision to notify its customers of a baggage restriction a few hours prior to checking in their baggage on flights to Paris and Amsterdam was done out of “good intentions”.

It was also done in compliance with a zero-tolerance policy against overflying conflict zones adopted following the deadly flight MH17 crash in Ukraine that was shot down on July 17, 2014, said its chief executive officer Christoph Mueller.

“We did not voluntarily make [ourselves] the clown of the city. We did not anticipate that the [good] intentions that we [had] wanted this communication [to be] to end up where it ended. We [had merely] wanted to inform our customers about the special situation,” he told The Edge Financial Daily yesterday.

Malaysia Airlines, which has been hogging the media limelight for the wrong reasons after the tragic incidents of MH370 and MH17 in 2014, once again received bad press due to its recent move to limit check-in baggage for flights to Paris and Amsterdam, citing strong headwinds, a move that left many passengers fuming.

The national airline had advised its passengers flying to the two cities to only carry up to 7kg of check-in luggage for two days — Jan 5 and 6 — from the original three days, citing “safety” and “unseasonably strong headwinds” as reasons. It had earlier planned to impose the same temporary restriction for flights to London, but cancelled it at the eleventh hour.

“It (move to notify its customers earlier) was done with very good intentions. We wanted to inform passengers not to put something they might need in their check-in luggage such as medication,” said Mueller.

He added that another reason for the restriction on check-in baggage allowance was due to its zero-tolerance policy with regard to overflying over a conflict zone.

“We are one of the few carriers in the world that do not compromise on this matter. We do not overfly Afghanistan, Ukraine, Syria or any areas that have the mildest warnings [for commercial aircraft] and that is the reason why all our flights to Europe are now flying via Saudi Arabia, far into Egypt, and going up across western Nile River,” he said.

Mueller noted that the rerouting has prolonged the airline’s flight to Europe by one and a half hours, but stressed that this is merely for safety reason.
“The [recent] decision also coincided with the storm in Europe, the strongest in decades. The [intense headwinds caused the] speed of our aircraft to slow down by one third, in addition to the additional flight time due to the rerouting.

“So it was for two days that we were limited in our payload. We basically wanted to ask our customers [flying to Paris and Amsterdam] for their understanding because for the two days, they could only travel with [hand-carry] luggage,” said Mueller.

“When the storm was over, the whole thing was normal again. And that was the communication intended, but it came out on the other end as a media disaster I admit,” he added.

Early last month, it was reported that Storm Desmond had caused heavy rain and floods in the UK, with streets submerged in northwest England and 60,000 homes left without power.

Just as it was recovering by Christmas holidays, the country was once again battered by high winds and heavy rains, causing much disruption to transportation and leaving thousands of people without electricity.

Mueller said other airlines were also affected by the storm and had taken a longer route for their flights to Europe. However, they were fortunate not to impose any baggage restriction on their passengers as they operate the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner, which have a longer range capability than Malaysia Airlines’ ageing Boeing 777-200ERs that will be phased out by the end of this month.
Malaysia Airlines mounts its 777s on flights between Kuala Lumpur and Paris, and Amsterdam, while using its Airbus A380 fleet on the Kuala Lumpur-London route.

“So, the A380 [flights] were not affected. It was really the type of aircraft, together with the overfly [policy] due to the storm in Europe. And again, two days were the whole story,” said Mueller.
Mueller said the payload restrictions also happen frequently among airlines in North Atlantic, especially during winter.

“However, what the American carriers do is they offload some of their passengers, meaning they carry less passengers [during those affected periods]. But we didn’t because we thought, “This being the Christmas vacation, let’s just take the people [first] and deliver their bags 24 hours later’,” he added.

“Our planes were fully booked because it was the Christmas travel time [and] there are not many days in a year where we see 100% load factor, so we decided to leave the cargo behind. The storm was also unprecedented,” he said.

Asked if Malaysia Airlines will implement the same modus operandi should a storm occur on its Europe flights again, Mueller said the management will have to decide on a case-by-case basis, adding that “every situation and every booking day are slightly different”.

KUALA LUMPUR, 11 Julai (Bernama) -- Perkhidmatan Tren Elektrik (ETS) dari Kuala Lumpur ke Padang Besar dan Padang Besar ke Kuala Lumpur yang bermula hari ini akan berhenti di 15 hentian.

Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) Berhad dalam satu kenyataan hari ini berkata 15 hentian itu ialah KL Sentral, Tanjung Malim, Tapah Road, Kampar, Ipoh, Kuala Kangsar, Taiping, Parit Buntar, Bukit Mertajam, Butterworth, Bukit Mertajam, Sungai Petani, Alor Star, Arau dan Padang Besar.

Kenyataan itu berkata harga tiket sehala dari Kuala Lumpur-Padang Besar atau Padang Besar-Kuala Lumpur ialah RM80.

Tren dari Kuala Lumpur ke Padang Besar, akan berlepas pada pukul 9.30 pagi dan tiba pada pukul 3 petang manakala dari Padang Besar ke Kuala Lumpur pada pukul 4 petang dan tiba pada 9.15 malam.

Bagi perkhidmatan tren ETS Transit Ipoh-Butterworth-Padang Besar dan sebaliknya yang telah bermula pada 10 Julai lepas akan berhenti di kesemua 24 stesen.

Sepuluh stesen hentian baharu diperkenalkan iaitu Anak Bukit, Bukit Ketri, Bukit Tengah, Kamunting, Kobah, Kodiang, Padang Rengas, Simpang Ampat, Tasek dan Tasek Gelugor.

Tiket tren Ipoh ke Butterworth adalah RM23 manakala Butterworth ke Padang Besar adalah RM21.

Waktu laluan Ipoh-Butterworth adalah 5 pagi dan tiba 6.50 pagi, Butterworth -Padang Besar (7.30 pagi-9.15 pagi), Padang Besar-Butterworth (2 petang-3.45 petang) dan Butterworth-Ipoh (5 petang-6.50 petang).

Buat permulaan, KTM Berhad hanya menyediakan satu perkhidmatan tren untuk setiap arah bagi kedua-dua perkhidmatan ETS dan kekerapan tren akan ditambah apabila tren-tren ETS yang baharu mula beroperasi.

PLUS OFFERS TOLL REBATE UP TO 50 PERCENT FOR HARI RAYA

PLUS will be offering toll rebates up to 50 percent to the public paying toll electronically for the Hari Raya Aidilfitri holidays.

PLUS Malaysia Berhad Managing Director, Dato’ Noorizah Hj Abd Hamid said, “The toll rebate will be given to Class 1 Vehicle users paying toll electronically on Off-Peak Days on 13, 14, 15, 21, 22 and 23 July in conjunction with the Hari Raya. The rebate is given to those travelling more than 100 kilometres on the PLUS highways.”

According to Noorizah, a 50 percent toll rebate will be given to highway users paying toll electronically via PLUSMiles and Touch ‘n Go card or SmartTAGs on 13 and 23 July. A 40 percent toll rebate will be given to electronic toll paying users on 14 and 22 July. Meanwhile, a 30 percent toll rebate will be given to highway users paying toll electronically on 15 and 21 July.

The rebate is part of an initiative to distribute the traffic and to encourage the public to travel on Off-Peak Days. It is also an effort to reward the highway users and the public.

PLUS has also finalised other approaches and strategies to help the public enjoy smoother travel on the highways during the upcoming festive season. This includes the issuance to the Travel Time Advisory (TTA) and others.

“Details of these initiatives will be issued to the media at a special media briefing and conference,” Noorizah said.

PLUS menawarkan rebat tol sehingga 50 peratus kepada orang ramai yang membayar tol secara elektronik di lebuh raya PLUS pada cuti perayaan Hari Raya Aidilfitri yang akan datang.

Pengarah Urusan PLUS Malaysia Berhad, Dato’ Noorizah Hj Abd Hamid berkata, “Rebat tol tersebut ditawarkan kepada pengguna kenderaan Kelas 1 yang membayar tol secara elektronik pada Hari-Hari Bukan Puncak iaitu 13, 14, 15, 21, 22 dan 23 Julai bersempena dengan perayaan Hari Raya Aidilfitri. Ia boleh dinikmati oleh pengguna yang menggunakan lebuh raya untuk perjalanan jarak jauh iaitu melebihi 100 kilometer pada hari-hari tersebut.”

Menurut Noorizah, rebat tol sebanyak 50 peratus diberikan kepada orang ramai yang membayar tol secara elektronik menggunakan kad PLUSMiles, kad Touch ‘n Go atau SmartTAG pada 13 dan 23 Julai. Manakala rebat tol sebanyak 40 peratus pula diberikan untuk pembayaran tol secara elektronik pada 14 dan 22 Julai. Sementara itu, rebat tol 30 peratus pula diberikan kepada orang ramai membayar tol secara elektronik pada 15 dan 21 Julai akan datang.

Pemberian rebat tol ini adalah salah satu daripada strategi PLUS untuk mengagihkan trafik serta menggalakkan orang ramai bergerak pulang ke kampung sebelum Hari Raya Aidilfitri dan kembali ke bandar selepas berhari raya pada Hari-hari Bukan Puncak. Ia juga merupakan penghargaan kami kepada orang ramai yang terus menyokong perkhidmatan rangkaian lebuh raya kami.

Connected travellers likely to make bookings via handsets: TripAdvisor

With the growing use of smartphones, "connected travellers" are more likely to make bookings through their handsets, says a recent survey by TripAdvisor.

"Mobile is proving to be the ultimate game changer in the travel business. It is increasingly becoming the primary device to not only plan and book trips but also discover places to eat and things to do upon reaching the destination.

"The fact that a majority (72 per cent) of the connected travellers use their smartphones to look for restaurants and 67 per cent to find attractions just reiterates the significance of the device in the travel journey," TripAdvisor India Country Manager Nikhil Ganju said quoting TripBarometer Connected Traveller report.

Further, it revealed that 45 per cent of connected travellers usually use their smartphones to book activities for a trip and 34 per cent want their accommodation to offer mobile check-in.

The TripBarometer study, by TripAdvisor, is based upon an online survey conducted from 16 January to 2 February 2015, conducted by Ipsos, a global research firm.

A total of 44,277 interviews were completed in 32 markets, spanning 7 regions.

While mobile app bookings with respect to accommodations has seen an increase to 8 per cent this year from 4 per cent last year, it is only a matter of time before this proportion becomes the majority, he opined.

According to the report, just under half of Indian travellers (47 per cent) fall into the connected traveller group, making them the 9th highest proportion of connected travellers of all the geographies surveyed.

Countries such as the United Kingdom, Japan and Australia trail behind India in this category.

Thailand and China lead the trend, with 65 per cent of Thai and Chinese TripBarometer respondents identified as connected travellers.

Looking at continents, South America has the highest proportion of connected travellers with 57 per cent of TripBarometer respondents from the region falling into the connected traveller segment.

The Middle East (55 per cent) and Asia (49 per cent) follow close behind.

"Through travel apps, connected travellers are finding their way around, looking for places to eat or things to do and reading reviews.

"They are also more likely to see their smartphones as a booking device, both before a trip and while in-destination," TripAdvisor Senior Vice President (Product) Adam Medros added.

The event, which was held on the evening of 15 April 2015 at the Royal Garden Hotel in London, saw 13 awards, which were segmented into four broad categories, namely Healthcare Provider and Agency, Marketing, Quality and Service, and Overall Achievement, being handed out. The awards included International Hospital of the Year, Specialist International Patient Centre, International Dental Clinic of the Year, Medical Spa of the Year, Best Marketing Initiative and Excellence in Customer Service.
For the Medical Travel Destination of the Year, the judges looked for all-round excellence in promoting inbound medical tourism, verified statistics of yearly growth in medical tourists served, evidence of high levels of patient satisfaction and co-ordinated activities that delivered an increase in medical tourism.

MAS Installs Aircraft Tracking System - Liow

PUTRAJAYA, March 6 (Bernama) -- National carrier Malaysia Airlines (MAS) has introduced a 15-minute aircast data downloading system to keep track on its aircraft almost on real time basis.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said he had ordered MAS to install an aircraft tracking system as part of enhancing aircraft security, as Malaysia emerged a key proponent for a real-time tracking system following the disappearance of the MAS flight MH370 a year ago.

"(Data downloading) every 15 minutes, very close to real time. For aircraft and aviation industry, 15 minutes signal downloading and data processing is of great importance," he said at a media briefing here today in conjunction with the first anniversary of the missing plane.

Flight MH370, which carried 12 crew members and 227 passengers, went off the radar screens while en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing about one hour after departing from the KL International Airport on March 8 last year. It was scheduled to arrive in Beijing at 6.30 am on the same day.

Liow said Malaysia was currently working with Australia on an aircraft tracking system and welcomed Australia's efforts to improve the system.

Malaysia, he said, had proposed to the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) in its council meeting at Montreal, Canada last October to look into the installation of a real-time air-tracking system on all international commercial flights.

"ICAO took the proposal very seriously and had set up a special committee to analyse the proposal and will announce their decision by Aug 31.

"There are certain requirements and conditions attached to this real-time tracking system," he said.

1. RM1.38 billion dibayar kepada pemegang saham seiring dengan kejayaan penurunan modal terpilih dan pembayaran balik (SCR), sebagai bahagian pertama pembiayaan pelaburan bersyarat sebanyak RM2 billion.

2. Saham MAS dinyahsenarai dari Bursa Securities pada 31 Disember 2014

3. Akta Malaysian Airline System Berhad (Pentadbirran) 2015 (Akta MAS) berkuat kuasa pada 20 Februari 2015 setelah diluluskan Parlimen tahun 2014.

4. Christopher Mueller memulakan tugas sebagai Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif Malaysia Airlines Berhad (NewCo) pada 1 Mac 2015. Beliau juga Pengarah Bukan Eksekutif MAS, ekoran perlantikannya pada 1 Januari 2015.

5. Bergantung kepada hasil rundingan baharu katering, MAS dan Brahim's Airline Catering Sdn Bhd (BAC) pada 27 Februari 2015, memeterai Perjanjian bagi tempoh interim bermula 1 Oktober 2014 hingga 31 Mac 2015 merangkumi : 1. Pengurangan 25% bil bulanan kepada MAS, 2. Penyelesaian terhadap jumlah hutang MAS kepada BAC sebanyak RM37.95 juta, berbeza daripada RM94.03 juta yang dituntut.
