A very well written article, thank you. I'm not from Kisiljevo but everything sounds familiar. Today, older people in Serbian villages still know stories about vampires and are willing to talk about them. As stated, a vampire in Serbia has some poltergeist characteristics. Just like a ghost, a vampire sometimes hides in the attic of the house, makes noises and strange voices. I heard a story about an older woman who turned into vampire after death and started terrorizing people in her village - they heard strange noises and crashing from the nearby corn field. If anyone wants to know more about vampires in Serbian folklore he/she can check the movie Leptirica (1973). Greetings from Serbia.

Your web site is certainly one of my favourites. Your book recommendations have been very useful. Der vampir, eine europäische mythos is a bit too hard for my German. Corpus Draculanium is on the night table and there are many more other books I have brought during years after your recommendations. Those books have been a great pleasure and something that van Helsing would certainly envy. Baron Vordenburg's library is something that I envy :)

Doctors might not have believed in Vampires but they were charlatans whose customers believed in Vampires.

Charging ~ equivalent of $150,000 for the autopsy was a lucrative benefit of this "going with the flow".

Not knowing what cancer was, it wasted the victims & was known as the "vampire disease".
