Chelsea 0-1 Liverpool: The one that went to extra time

Perspective is often overlooked in football - and no longer just by fans, but by the 'experts' for the sake of a snappy soundbite or engagement on social media. It's polarised every result into a turning point or the end of the world. There's no longer an in between. And maybe - that's not really the road we want to travel. Maybe, just maybe, it might be refreshing to take a step back and look at things as they are rather than feed into some narrative or another.

Chelsea's defeat in the Carabao Cup final sucked - for lack of a better word. It didn't feel good to lose. Defeats shouldn't just be accepted because ~~some~~ the players gave their all. The goal should be always to win. The tackle, the ball, the game, the trophy, ~~Olivier Giroud's heart~~. Winning is what it's all about. However a singular loss isn't an entire season in microcosm - which is how these results are starting to be treated more and more.

On Monday Night Football, Jamie Carragher said that "I think that game if it's played 10 times, Chelsea win 8 of them. I have no doubt about that." And he's not wrong. In those opening 90 minutes, the Blues had the better chances. While there were a few that could have done better with their finishing maybe learn what it is to chip a keeper, no would should ignore the fact that Liverpool's keeper, Caoimhin Kelleher, was called into action. A lot. He was forced into a number of difficult saves to keep things level, making 9 in total. They didn't all just get gently lobbed into his waiting arms. He also had the 'best defensive partnership'* in the universe in front of him.

The former Liverpool defender isn't the only one who reacted to Gary Neville's 'bottlejob' dig - with a number of high profile pundits hitting back at his soundbite. Ally McCoist insisted the tag was wrong and echoed Carragher's sentiment that the game could have gone either way. Gary Lineker also said Chelsea 'could have won it' and went on to highlight Kelleher's stellar save on Cole Palmer's best effort. While Simon Jordan slammed Neville and his 'little Overlap gang'.

The other pervasive trope that came out of the game was the idea of 'Klopp's kids'. Again - thanks Gary for getting that out there. Liverpool were able to bring on a number of academy stars in extra time that proved effective. But in large part because they were playing alongside experienced counterparts. Everyone seems to have casually ignored that it was a £75m 32 year old defender who popped up for the eventual winner. On average, Chelsea were 2 years younger than Liverpool both at the start of the game and at the final whistle despite those young players being given a chance.

Experience cannot be underestimated in general - but especially not when it comes to a final. It's experience that finds the breakthrough and it's experience that pushes those around them to elevate their standards. That is the lesson that Todd Boehly and his band of cohorts should be taking from this defeat. Not that their project held their own for 90 mins but that a few older heads on the pitch are what ultimately lifts you the trophy.

They need to have a hard look at their recruitment policy and ease the restrictions on age. ~~And sack Paul Winstanley~~. An experienced player would have helped calm the nerves for those that may have been overawed by the occasion. They don't need to be the wrong side of 30 or come with a big price tag - but they do need to be a leader and come with more than a half season games under their belt.

The elephant in the room of course is how Chelsea turned in on themselves and ultimately fell apart in those final 30 minutes. Mauricio Pochettino's comments after which appeared to admit that they were playing for penalties have not gone down well in the immediate reactionary aftermath. All fingers were pointing at the boss - with a strong undertone of where he previously managed, and I don't mean PSG. He started the strongest team and made the best subs he could with the fit players that were available. The penalty 'admission' has since been cleared up by a number of journalists. It was not a tactic deployed by Pochettino or consciously by the players - it was his observation that they were shattered and appeared to subconsciously be playing for penalties.

The players that started that match gave everything they had. There legs were gone and they were trying to get stretched out wherever they could - without adding to the constant injury crisis. While a bit chaotic at times, potentially from the magnitude of the occasion or the collective lack of experience they still were the more likely team to have won in those first 90 minutes. Which of course makes extra time and the subsequent defeat feel even worse. But the fact they ran themselves into the ground for Pochettino speaks volumes about what they think of him - and why he is the best man to take this group forward. But he needs to be given a couple of grown ups to help get Chelsea back to where they belong and lifting the silverware rather than the runners up medals.

Despite the sweeping changes throughout the squad and coaching staff - some things remain the same. Chelsea and Liverpool play out a draw. Again. It is the seventh in a row - with two of those going to penalty shootouts. However you cut it - there was nothing to separate the sides at full time.

The excitement going into the weekend should have been focused on what Mauricio Pochettino was going to bring to this young squad. But it seemed just about everyone had their eyes on Fabrizio Romano. Other transfer gurus are available. David Ornstein being the preferred option. But I digress.

Chelsea vs Liverpool on and off the pitch

The Moises Caicedo saga loomed large over Stamford Bridge with both sides showing exactly why they were willing to pay well over the odds for his services. It was a midfield light edition of this all too familiar clash. A shame that Chelsea only got the deal over the line after the match - because confirming his signing at half-time on the pitch would have just hit different.

Enzo impresses

Enzo Fernandez really came into his own to start the season with a bang. Potentially bolstered with the knowledge he could have some defensive cover joining him sooner than later. But it he left it all out there on the pitch with even Liverpool stars impressed. After the match, his World Cup winning teammate Mac Allister said "Today he showed why they paid what they paid for him, why he is here." It was potentially his best performance in a Chelsea shirt to date.

Surprise system

Despite deploying a back four throughout pre-season, the boss seemed to catch everyone out tactically by starting with three centre-backs. It may have been a late decision with Kepa's departure or injuries to key players. Trent Alexander-Arnold admitted that even Liverpool were not expecting that system and lost control of the game after the opening 25 minutes. He's not wrong.

Right at home

As widely reported on his arrival, Pochettino hosted a BBQ for Chelsea staff because he wanted to make the training ground feel like home. And he has extended that philosophy to Stamford Bridge. The new Chelsea boss was given license to switch the dugouts insisting that the right side would give him the edge and put him in his comfort zone. He's all about marginal gains and positive energy. The man in black did not look out of place for a single second throughout the 90 minutes. It's been a while since we have seen a suit on the touchline, and it just looked right.

Scoring goals is fun

It didn't take long for Mauricio Pochettino to make his mark on the Chelsea squad. And yes, it's important to keep things in perspective in terms of the opponent and the fact that this is preseason. However, if we're all being really honest with each other - if Graham Potter was still overseeing this, rather than a 5-nil win this would be a draw at best.

Chelsea managed to score more goals against Wrexham than they managed in the whole of January and February combined. That was 11 matches. Granted they were competitive and across a number of competitions - but really sums up the problems that have been a hallmark of Potter's teams, beyond just a misfiring chaotic club in London.

Veteran keeper Ben Foster perfectly summed up the tactics which the Argentinian boss is trying to instil into his young squad. "‘Runners down the wing, players coming inside going outside, and there’s always taking the ball on the run. They’re either already running or they’re picking it and running with it so it just gets you on the back foot straight away and it’s good to see. There’s so much pace, they’re so sharp."

No one was saying anything like that about Chelsea last year. In fact, Frank Lampard highlighted how problematic the fitness was among his inherited side. The players were warned that they would 'suffer' at the hands of Pochettino and his coaches through a brutal two-week fitness camp. And it appears it's already paying off.

While some things have begun to change for the better, not everything has blossomed under a new watchful eye. Raheem Sterling appeared to still struggle with the issues that plagued him throughout the whole of last season. He does manage to get into some useful positions, but his finishing needs more than a little work. Wrexham were there for the taking, and the former Man City star did anything but.

Academy star Ian Maatsen took his chance to impress the new boss. Having spent a season on loan at Burnley, the youngster starred for the newly promoted side at left-back. But Pochettino opted to move him further forward and it paid off with a first half brace, including the opening goal after just three minutes. His versatility and eye for goal may see him earn a position in the first team this season.

A first look, for many Chelsea fans, at new boys Nico Jackson and Christopher Nkunku. While the latter got on the scoresheet with a clinical finish in the dying minutes, it was the former Villarreal star that made an instant impact despite not getting a goal for himself. His speed and positioning were key to Maatsen's opener and he tested Wrexham's defence at every opportunity. The Toddfather may have unearthed a real gem.

And then there was one

There's a party at my house - but only strangers have turned up.

That's currently how it feels to be a Chelsea supporter. Much is made of the £600million spent since the Americans rolled up. Something that should fuel excitement and anticipation. It certainly did during Roman Abramovich's first Football Manager style transfer window.

However, the deals have felt hollow. Fans feel a greater disconnect with the club than they have in decades, and it has nothing to do with the abysmal 12th place finish. Although, that certainly doesn't help matters. Nor did the timid little door mouse that was in the dugout for the majority of last season.

Forget all the damning records that Graham Potter's Chelsea managed to break in terms of points and fewest goals scored. The fact that Kepa is now the longest-serving non-academy developed player at the club perfectly sums up the situation we find ourselves in. The Spanish goalkeeper signed less than five years ago.

That is not slant on the keeper himself. While often the figure of mockery - it's misplaced by about two years. And some people need to get over themselves. Despite playing behind a fractured team and ever-changing backline, he managed to shine and maintain one of the best save percentages in the Premier League. He was also awarded the save of the season - so Chelsea did, in fact, pick up a piece of silverware this season.

Just over two years ago, the Blues picked up their second Champions League trophy. Virtually that entire squad from the starting XI to the subs bench has been completely disbanded. There are overhauls, and then there is a clearout so outrageous that it should be no surprise that people's heads are spinning.

There's not denying that the squad was bloated and needed a fairly ruthless trim. But this may be a case of throwing the baby out with the bathwater. The players that were brought in were, by and large, selected for their potential. Ones to watch. And while some may rise to the challenge, how many of them are going to be better than the players sold to cover those transfer fees?

Squads always need a refresh - some more than others. Sir Alex Ferguson was infamous for swapping out his stars and even coaches to keep the team moving forward. But there was always a core group that could be built on to help integrate the incoming players. And cult heroes amongst them, that fans could get behind.

The most pressing issue on the pitch is that there isn't really a spine at Chelsea. Insert whatever joke takes your fancy here. Mauricio Pochettino hasn't been given a solid foundation to build on. He's virtually starting from scratch - and with players he has not had a chance to select. In fact, the player that embodied the spirit he will try to impart has been sold off to the red half of Manchester.

For those in the stands, they will do their best to get behind these new players. But without those familiar faces you've grown affection for, someone to gravitate towards - we might find ourselves feeling like that awkward guest in our own house.

Evolution not revolution would have eased the transition for players and fans alike.

Poch knows the way to anyone's heart

Mauricio Pochettino did not just use his first day at Cobham to drop a pitch perfect interview that may go viral for the amount of times I have watched it, but to make an incredible first impression on Chelsea staff members. The new boss boss hosted an Argentinian barbecue.

Following his media duties, Pochettino invited both football and non-football staff to get to know one another over an absolute feast. The asado is more than just the meat, vegetable and a few pineapples, it's about social connections - something the boss is keen to implement into a very fractured club.

One staff member lucky to take part shared that 'It was a great touch and a really good way for the head coach to introduce himself. It was very relaxed.' It's a tactic he's utilised pre and post-season at his other clubs. Tottenham even provided him with a personalised BBQ. No word on whether that particular one will make it's way to the good part of London.

The Argentinian is all about positivity and is keen to foster a family feeling across the club.

"It’s so important, and that is our philosophy we want to share here at Chelsea. I need to feel that you all are my staff, my people, and you need to feel I am your colleague. We need to work together, and all need to feel important.

"Football has changed in the last few years, it is important in every single area to have people with quality and the capacity to push us and myself to be better. We need leaders, not followers, in every single area and we will push every person to bring their best and give their best for the club."

It's no surprise that his first big gesture was at the training ground - which he no longer wants players to just think of as their workplace. He wants them to feel comfortable and that it's a place that belongs to them. Pochettino spoke candidly about the facilities at Cobham and the mentality he is trying to instil.

"It’s a fantastic, really nice training ground. The most important thing is players and staff need to feel that it is our home. It's not only a place to come to work, it's to come here and feel like home. Our responsibility is to help create this feeling and we are fully committed to trying to create a big atmosphere where people can feel really happy to work.

"I always believe that together we can achieve everything – you can’t put a limit. We are going to try to fight with this to be all together on a fantastic journey together."

Most players can count themselves unlucky on this occasion, with only a few returning in time to partake. Reece James, Raheem Sterling and Ben Chilwell were among the stars back on Tuesday to face a formidable fitness regime as Pochettino tries to undo the Potter that's no doubt still festering.

Mason Mount making it look easy

As kick-off edged closer on Tuesday afternoon I was filled with a mixture of both excitement and sheer dread. With the World Cup breaking up the season it had been weeks seeing Chelsea in action. With the form they were in and injuries that had accumulated - the shocking backhanded decision by FIFA to hold this farce was probably for the best. It gave Graham Potter the opportunity to properly work with his inherited players - at least the ones who didn't jet off to Qatar.

The Blues have not had the best record against Bournemouth in recent times. In fact, they've managed just two wins in their last six meetings. Both victories were spear headed by Eden Hazard who has yet to be replaced in this squad. He has little magical boots that need filled before the team an truly push on and compete on all fronts again.

Chelsea did the unthinkable in their mid-week clash --ood e they scored early. It took just 16 minutes for Raheem Sterling to pick out a marauding Kai Havertz. And another eight minutes for the German to set one up himself as Mason Mount took his chance and doubled the lead. It is the first time Chelsea have scored two goals in the opening 45 minutes of a Premier League match since April -- and that was in a 4-2 defeat to Arsenal.

With the victory - it means Chelsea keep their place of eighth in the table and are now level on points with Potter's former flock of seagulls and six points off a place in the top four. Although it would be prudent to remember that despite the time of year, it's not quite half way through this topsy turvy season. So a lot of football is still to be played.

What can Chelsea take from this match?

Not Reece James.

The Blues' star boy is crocked once again. His involvement in the first half was key to a bright start overall. Chelsea just look miles better with him on the pitch than without. Something we all witnessed in the lead up to aforementioned FIFA moneymaker. He is key to this side and there was a serious drop off in momentum when he limped off after re-aggravating his problematic knee. The good news is it is not as serious as first thought. The bad news is that he will be on the sidelines for the next 3-4 weeks, where the team face Manchester City twice and a newly re-invigorated Liverpool side.

Transfer Window Bonanza

The most recent setback could see Chelsea focus their attentions on a backup for James. Their problem will be convincing someone who's good enough to fill the giant gap he leaves - but one who'll be content as a squad man when the gaffer tape on that dodgy knee holds up. Celtic's Josip Juranovic is the name being bandied about on social media - but as things stand, the club have yet to make a formal approach. No doubt it won't be the only position that Todd and Co. will be looking to fill come January 1st.

Kai Havertz took that World Cup Man of the Match award personally

While everyone was busy talking about the photograph of Lionel Messi lifting the World Cup shrouded in a bisht, the real picture of the tournament was Chelsea's very own German holding his man of the match award following a late victory against Costa Rica. Havertz came off the bench to score the two winning goals - only to see his side eliminated. No one has ever looked so furious at receiving an award - it edges on mugshot territory. He returned to London and reportedly netted a hat-trick in a behind-closed-doors friendly against neighbours Brentford. And he's managed to keep things going with a top performance this week with both a goal and an assist, despite returning to the false nine role. Worthy of another man of the match award.

Mason Mount continues to make 'fans' look stupid

I have never understood the social media led angst over Mason Mount's inclusion in any team - especially those purporting to be Chelsea fans. There are a lot of bad football takes out there - this has to be one of the worst. There is never a moment he doesn't give his all on the pitch whether it be for England or Chelsea. He's been forced into a number of different roles and is always striving to improve. For years, Chelsea fans called out for a academy stars to be given a chance, he's taken it and run with it -- and gets bizarrely abused. Give over already - he's a top player who's only getting better and showed exactly what he brings to the team this week with his tireless performances. With his strike he now has 51 goal contributions in the Premier League (27 goals and 24 assists). The only other Chelsea player to manage that before the age of 25 was Eden Hazard.

Risk vs Reward at the back

It's difficult to question the team selection when it comes to the defensive line when you come away with a clean sheet - but here we are. While some have questioned the decision to risk James, I don't think he would have played on well into the second half had he or the medical team had real concerns about his knee holding up. My bigger concern was the centre back pairing. Kalidou Koulibaly has had his moments both good and bad this season. I can't say I'm sold on him and his rumoured summer departure won't really be the blow some may think it is. More worrying is Thiago Silva soldiering on for the entire match. He's obviously Chelsea's best defender. However, within minutes of the game starting he was clearly struggling with some mild injury - or tightness in his hamstring. It never really worked itself out as the game went on. Combine that with the fact he'd pushed for this move to win World Cup with Brazil - which they distinctly did not do. And that he played all of their matches - the boss will need a way to manage his 38-year-old body throughout the season. Discussions need to be had as his continued fitness will be key to Chelsea holding onto European football for next season.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Chelsea: The one with two new Chelsea goalscorers

The last time Chelsea had a Premier League match, there was a difference monarch, different prime minister and different man in the dugout. It was difficult to know what to expect from Graham Potter but narrative was always going to be on the cards - having previously managed Crystal Palace's 'fierce rivals', Brighton.

Of course the real narrative came in the dying moments of the match as former Eagles loanee and blonde bombshell Conor Gallagher struck from distance to score the first goal for his boyhood club. Unlike Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who also spent time on loan at Selhurst Park and went full on with his celebrations against them in the FA Cup clash last season, Gallagher chose for the muted acknowledgement. Understandable as he enjoyed a good relationship with the fans there, but disappointing as a goal of that quality -- and it being the winner - really deserved him to go all out.

Having two matches postponed in the wake of Queen Elizabeth II's passing has allowed Potter to work with his new charges, see what they have to offer and bring his own tactics to the table. He opted for a flat back four, something some fans have been crying out for, despite the club's abysmal record when they leave themselves exposed at the back. However after being overrun in midfield in the previous matches, it may have felt necessary to the new boss. Rather than a 4-3-3, it appeared the new boss opted for a more 4-2-2-2 shape allowing a lot more freedom to some or Chelsea's players.

As the Blues were coming to grips with their new shape, Crystal Palace were able to capitalise with an early goal from Odsonne Edouard. He had clearly watched tapes of Wesley Fofana's performances in the Champions League this season and made the most of it. Before the break, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang netted his first goal for Chelsea but not without controversy. Moments before his Drogba-esque turn, Thiago Silva who assisted him had been caught up in an entanglement with Jordan Ayew.

The two collided en route to Chelsea's 18-yard box and when down, Thiago Silva appeared to have handled the ball. Palace were desperate to see the Brazilian sent off for denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity. However with their distance from goal, and the number of Blues in the box ready to deal with any run from Ayew's part, the defender was merely shown a yellow and we all just moved on with our lives. Of course O Monstro popped up to nod the ball down for Auba's equaliser, but the ball in from Reece James deserves a mention of it's own. Lost amid the narrative, it was a stunning pass that has been a hallmark of his game.

Reece James was charged with marking Wilfried Zaha out of the match and did so with aplomb. The England star was so effective that Zaha was forced to change wings to try and find a break through. What that says about Ben Chilwell, I'm not sure. But Palace knew there was no getting past James on Saturday - something the Man United flop tried to play down on social media after the match. But he quickly deleted his post.

James wasn't the only unsung star from the weekend. Kepa quietly had another outstanding performance and hopefully has come a little closer to staking his claim for a starting role even when all goalkeepers are fit. There wasn't much he could do about the goal itself, but made a number of key saves, caught crosses and has really begun to command his area. What makes our Spanish No. 1 standout from the others though is his distribution and forward thinking play. He's not constantly just rolling it to Thiago looking for an easy pass - but seeing how he can get it out quickly and into attack. Deserves a run in this side under the new boss and his new goalkeeping coach.

Thiago Silva ageing like a fine wine

Chelsea's start to the 2022/23 season is not going to go down as a classic. It was laboured and had not one but two medical emergencies - on and off the pitch. The lone goal a penalty struck deep into first-half injury time. But none of that matters. It was a win away at their bogey ground all while facing Frank Lampard in the dugout and bedding in new signings. A brilliant way to kick-off the campaign and set the tone for a season like no other.

Summer signings Kalidou Koulibaly and Raheem Sterling were both handed a place in the starting lineup while late transfer Marc Cucurella came on late in the second half for his first minutes in a Chelsea shirt. Although the most anticipated debut came just before the full time whistle as blonde bombshell Conor Gallagher came on for goal-scorer Jorginho.

Chelsea could often be accused of problematic transfers or 'panic-buys' in the transfer window - but this was a rare time that you couldn't. However some very prolific figures in the media have come out swinging all repeating the same panic claims. The club have lost Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen to La Liga, with Marcos Alonso looking to follow them. Quite sensibly, the Blues have signed an experienced centre back and versatile left back who can slot into any of the now vacant roles. Both deals were preceded by the arrival of Sterling as Timo Werner prepares to return to Germany. It could literally be the most thoughtful transfer window the club have had - systematically replacing outgoing players. Gary Neville and Martin Keown... do better.

While Thiago Silva was most certainly the player of the match against Everton, Chelsea's three new signings all managed to catch the eye on their debuts. Koulibaly was solid in defence alongside O Monstro. While not overly threatened by the Toffees, when called upon he always showed great composure and came out on top. Sterling offered a glimpse of what is to come. While he didn't register a goal or assist he kept busy, found space and troubled the defenders - arguably unlucky not to come away with anything. Cucu did not get the same mins as the other two having had just one training session with his new teammates - but he looked exciting enough that Ben Chilwell should be reasonably worried.

Jorginho's hop-skip-jump penalty technique divides opinion - for good reason. He opted out this time as he faced old Euros foe Jordan Pickford from the spot. As successful as he is on penalties - having Wembley shootout flashbacks did me no favours for my confidence in his scoring. There doesn't feel like there was a point this season that Chelsea haven't been sat comfortably in the third place, neatly tucked behind Man City and Liverpool as they slug it out. But in recent weeks, it's all decidedly got uncomfortable with Tuchel's side getting sucked into the vortex that is the fourth place race.

While the club neatly navigated the fixtures coming thick and fast as sanctions and uncertainty hit, it all appears to be catching up with the players now. While not all doom and gloom obviously - Chelsea are still three points above fourth placed Arsenal, and five points from fifth placed Tottenham, with a vastly superior goal difference to either of their North London rivals. But the nerves are now on red alert.

A draw to one of the worst teams in the league at Old Trafford followed by a defeat to a team sat in the relegation zone as certainly raised tensions on and off the pitch. While Chelsea dominated on Thursday and were horrifically unlucky not to come away with all three points, the same cannot be said for Sunday's flat performance. Possession stats aside - it never felt like they'd be leaving Goodison Park with anything aside from bruised egos and memories of Frank Lampard celebrating.

Of course there are a number of mitigating factors that played into the lacklustre display. Chelsea played Thursday night while Everton had a week to prepare. The fireworks going off all night outside the hotel did no one any favours - if the players are even half as miserable as I am without sleep. And of course the need. Everton are playing for their lives right now with Burnley somehow turning their own season around. While things may have got a bit complacent with our Champions League place previously feeling secure.

In the opening 45 minutes, Chelsea boasted seventy-four per cent of the possession. However, they created just one chance and failed to have a single shot on target. Tempers flared early and often. There were 14 fouls committed and 5 yellow cards dished out. Everton were out to unsettle Chelsea and stop them playing their game. It worked.

The second half started with an almighty error from Cesar Azpilicueta who gifted Everton their goal. Uncharacteristic from the captain. But these individual errors have been creeping in. A sloppy penalty against Arsenal, most of Real Madrid's goals. All just a bit sloppy, but mostly good performances.

Chelsea did their best to immediately respond to Richarlison's lucky strike, but thanks to the heroics of ~~Gianluigi~~ Jordan Pickford they were denied. And denied. And denied again. Thankfully, the team have a week off to let their bodies and minds recover. Wolves up next - who have nothing really to play for and have been shocking as of late. Chelsea's stars have a chance to send a message that they won't be letting go of their Champions League place without a fight.

Three Premier League matches. Three wins. Across three months. Chelsea have finally put together a decent run of form in the Premier League, but with it spanning across 42 days, it doesn't exactly feel like it. The Blues have tightened their grip on third place opening up a gap on Man United following their disasterclass at the Etihad.

Tuchel made seven changes from Chelsea's FA Cup win at Luton, with Reece James making his first start of the calendar year, Saul deputised as a wing-back and Kai Havertz led the line, while Romelu Lukaku looked on. Unsurprisingly with some players still struggling with fitness and so many changes - the opening 45 minutes from Turf Moor made for a difficult watch.

Chelsea struggled to break down Burnley's low block, while the hosts appeared to be on the front foot sensing a potential vulnerability. Their efforts were denied by Thiago Silva who was not going to let the Clarets notch up their first win against Chelsea at home since 1973.

Thomas Tuchel must have given the team talk of his life at the break. Despite their being no immediate personnel changes on the pitch - it was like a completely different team turned up. Within minutes of the second half-kicking off, Reece James gave Chelsea the lead. And within 10 minutes - the Blues found themselves 3-nil up following a brace from Kai Havertz.

With just twenty minutes to go, Christian Pulisic made it four, and it was smooth sailing from there. Burnley could count themselves lucky that the scoring stopped with our American hero. A statement win to build on as the fixtures continue to come thick and fast across three competitions.

The first half performance was the only disappointment at the start of the match. As football showed its support for Ukraine, some travelling fans felt the need to respond to this by singing for Roman Abramovich. There were 90 more minutes for you to do that. There was absolutely no need to disrupt a brilliant show of unity. And as horrified as I was by it, I can only imagine what the man himself thought. I can only assume it was the very last thing he'd want. Timing is everything - and this was as disrespectful as it was embarrassing. Do better.

Reece James reminded everyone what Chelsea have been missing these past few months. Those questions marks over form and what happened after a brilliant start to the season. That. They were missing one of their most important players. Tuchel structured the team around the full backs and their driving force. And Reece James was every bit of that on Saturday afternoon. The title challenge could have been real had he and Chilly stayed fit.

Kai Havertz proved once again he understood the assignment. He's brilliant in that false 9 role. His movement is exceptional how he always manages to find space and ask questions of the opposition. It's something that's been lacking for much of this season. Not dropping any other £100m strikers in it. But the German gives the attacking players around him options and should be the first choice going forward.

With another Premier League match coming up mid-week, it's possible that Romelu Lukaku was being 'rested' for his return to the pitch. But it felt like a telling moment that Tuchel turned to Werner rather than the Belgian to close the match out. Timo always links up well with his countryman, causes chaos around the 18-yard box, and did pick himself up a goal and couple of assists to send Chelsea through to the FA Cup quarter-finals.

While Mason Mount looks still in the post-Euros haze a lot of his England team-mates have found themselves in this season, it's brilliant that Christian Pulisic looks to have finally found his feet within the team. The American has struggled with injury only finding a proper run during 'Project Restart'. But Saturday offered a timely reminder of what he can contribute when he's fully fit and flying. necessary for a tricky run-in.

Thomas Tuchel was quick to keep Chelsea grounded ahead of Wednesday night's second-leg Carabao Cup semi-final against Tottenham. Despite dominating at Stamford Bridge, a two-goal lead is a lot more slender than the first half deserved. The Blues could be punished for not taking their chances in that opening 45 minutes.

The German was asked whether Chelsea already had one foot at Wembley and immediately replied "I would say we have no feet in the final."

"We don't need to lose energy thinking about one foot in the final. We play a good team and top, top coach. Not half a foot or one foot, why lose energy thinking about this?

"We need to be fully aware of everything and adapt to situations. We want to control it while attacking as much as possible. We forget the first game and do it again."

Clearly not letting that 5-1 win in the FA Cup take any focus off of what lies ahead at White Hart Lane 2.0. Better to stay fully focused when taking on any team managed by Antonio Conte - even Tottenham.

After hyping him up over a foot in the final and having it shut down, Tuchel was then asked how he could avoid complacency within the squad. The boss didn't even know the meaning of the word. But, actually, quite literally. He asked the press officer.

"We have to trust ourselves and prepare properly, always on the front foot, respect for the competition and our opponents. It is our obligation to be prepared.

"I have trust in my staff and players. We have a good result because we played a good game but now we start from scratch."

Tuchel confirmed there were no fresh injuries following the victory over Chesterfield at the weekend. While both N'Golo Kante and Thiago Silva are out of isolation after their positive Covid results last week. However, the pair will both have to pass a number of tests including heart before they return to full training.

With Manchester City lying in wait this weekend, the star duo will likely be rested for the Carabao Cup clash, potentially with an appearance on the bench. Tuchel added "I have to wait and see if Thiago and Kante are in training, it is a gamble if we do it, how much responsibility we can take."

Although he didn't do much wrong at the weekend, Marcus Bettinelli will also return to the bench with Kepa returning to the starting lineup. The Spanish keeper's form was questioned despite looking nothing but solid in each of his appearances throughout the season and the boss was full of praise for his character.

"I never experienced Kepa nervous, or jealous one single day. I've never seen him not happy for his colleague.

"The good thing is it is a very genuine trust everyone has and I felt the same for him, he is very calm and focused.

"He does not need to show in these 90 minutes that he is capable, we trust him and it is not easy being a goalkeeper, we are happy to have him. No extra speech from me."

Lewis Hall - a star was born

Chelsea cruised into the fourth round of the FA Cup following professional win over National League leaders Chesterfield at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon. It took just six minutes for Timo Werner to get the Blues on the scoresheet - and from that moment forward, the match was only ever going to go one way.

Andreas Christensen, Romelu Lukaku and Callum Hudson-Odoi all added goals of their own before the break. With four goals worth of breathing room, Tuchel was free to make changes going into the second half giving some tired stars a break and planning ahead for the mid-week semi-final clash against Antonio Conte's Tottenham. This was the perfect match to warm-up for what could prove to be a difficult second leg.

The second half was a little more restrained with Chelsea managing just one more goal - as Hakim Ziyech netted from the spot. But it was Akwasi Asante's late consolation goal for Chesterfield which actually added a little magic to the game. The scenes in that away end were brilliant as their returning star gave them something to cheer about.

Brief shout for Chesterfield's late sub - Harry Maguire's brother, Laurence. That's right - Harry and Larry Maguire. Just sit back and digest what their parents were thinking there. Not near enough was made of this.

With injuries and covid running through the squad, Tuchel was left with little choice to not only rotate the squad, but to improvise and hand out a debut. The biggest surprise came in the form of 17 year-old academy starlet Lewis Hall. He was playing out of position but you'd never have known it. The youngster not only slotted right in, but stamped his authority on the game - deservedly being named man of the match. He even added an assist to his name as he picked out Lukaku for his basic tap-in.

Although Hall and Sarr were used - it was evident from the teamsheet that Tuchel had nothing but respect for both the FA Cup and non-league opponents Chesterfield. He went with, arguably, one of the strongest attacking lines he could have - while still ensuring players are rested for Spurs mid-week. While on the scoresheet, Lukaku should have probably had a bigger impact on the game than he did -- especially while he's on PR duty over *that* interview. Don't score a tap-in, jog to the centre circle and wave like you're the queen. Especially when the reaction from your own fans is mixed at best.

Be more Timo

Big Rom's strike partner, Timo Werner did exactly what Timo does best. Continued to press, create space and even scored the opening goal. His celebration was far more muted. The German proved once again to be a class act. He's been dreadfully unlucky since arriving in England, hopefully the new year has been a turning point now that he's fit again and recovered from Covid. There won't be any dodgy interviews coming from his camp and you're always guaranteed to get maximum effort from him in each and every match.

Up and coming academy stars were not the only ones getting a chance to prove themselves this weekend. Lewis Baker made just his second appearance for Chelsea - eight years apart. He has been at the club since he was just nine years old. At 26, it's likely he's never going to get a run in the first team. But his cameo on Saturday did remind everyone what a talent he once was. And potentially, he'll be able to secure a move to a decent side to continue his career. His contract is up this summer, but it never hurts to be in the shop window.

Thomas Tuchel's Chelsea are now just 90 minutes away from another final. And while it may not have the gravitas of a European Cup, it is the first silverware of the season and creates a winning mentality. It will also be the first time since 2015 that a team not from Manchester will have their name on the trophy.

The questions looming over the match was whether Romelu Lukaku would be reinstated to the starting lineup after his nonsense interview and who were the two new players who had Covid. Lukaku was picked ahead of Timo Werner to lead the line. While N'Golo Kante and Thiago Silva tested positive following their close up action with Liverpool's outbreak.

It took just five minutes for Kai Havertz to get Chelsea off to the perfect start - with a helping hand from Davinson Sanchez. The silky German's shot deflected in off of the Tottenham defender - and proved to be a sign of things to come from the visitors. In a calamitous mix-up a half hour later, Japhet Tanganga's header hit Ben Davies and deflected in past Hugo Lloris to double Chelsea's lead.

Antonio Conte definitely had a strong word or three for his players at the break, as they came out a lot more organised, playing with purpose and without Matt Doherty after his experiment at left-wing back came to an abrupt end. Tuchel made an early sub of his own with Timo Werner coming on for Havertz.

Chelsea go into the reverse fixture as favourites with a solid performance and two goal lead. However, with the chaos that ensued in the opening 45 minutes and a couple of chances that should have been, the Blues can feel a degree of disappointment at not taking three or even four goals to White Hart Lane.

Saul may have not been first choice in Wednesday night's midfield had it not been for Covid and injury concerns. But finally, he found his feet. He has quietly been getting better despite being played all over the pitch, but against Tottenham he really found his place in this Chelsea team. He rose to the challenge to become the all-action midfielder with his tackling and ball recovery second to none. More of this please Mr. Niguez.

Saul's best mate from the Spain squad, Kepa, also did well. The keeper wasn't put under too much pressure from Harry Kane and Co. But rose to the challenge whenever called upon. A clean sheet should fill him with confidence as he becomes Chelsea's de facto No. 1 this month -- and will be facing Tottenham two more times in the next two weeks. A big moment for the shotstopper who lost his way for a bit.

Kai Havertz also proved himself to be a warrior, and in all honesty, do not know how he remained on the pitch until half time. The forward broke his finger after scoring the opener. After some brief treatment in the technical area he was back on and going toe to toe with Tottenham's defenders. Even Tuchel was impressing noting after the match "Kai has the issue with his finger, he broke his finger and it looked horrible. And he played through the pain that was getting bigger and bigger."

Romelu Lukaku's return went exactly how everyone, but Romelu Lukaku would have expected. The reception was toned down from what it would have been had he faced Liverpool. While largely reported as 'positive', it was really lukewarm at best. A smattering of boos among indifference was the tone as the teamsheets were read out. His performance matching the tone did not do much to win the Chelsea faithful back - but he'll have two more chances at Spurs this month to prove he can do an important goal against a fierce rival. The only actual way to get fans back onside.

The first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final also meant Antonio Conte will get two returns to Stamford Bridge this month rather than one. Thankfully, he still has a long way to go to turn his new players around. But if truth be told, I enjoyed seeing him back. No one does technical area enthusiasm quite like the Don. He also clearly still has immense respect for the club. After the defeat the former boss said: "Before the game, I said this type of game can show us the difference, the gap there is between us and a top club like Chelsea. I think we struggled a lot this evening. They showed they were much stronger than us and for sure, we need to be disappointed."

If I were a Norwich supporter this season - I'd probably be a ridiculously angry person too. Dead last in the Premier League with just eight goals scored across nineteen matches does not scream fun match going experience. When a team is this low, it's hard to pinpoint a single contributing factor - but that did not stop the fans at Selhurst Park from singling out Billy Gilmour.

In fact no single loan player in the history of players being loaned out has directly contributed to an entirely abject season. Especially when that player was largely left out of the squad. Daniel Farke made it clear that he did not want to develop loan players - so Gilmour spent most of his time on the fringes during matches. With his strong views on loanees being outsiders - you can draw some conclusions about how they were treated during training when planning for their next embarrassing defeat.

With nothing better to sing about - the grown men in the away end at Selhurst Park gleefully shouted at 20 year-old Billy Gilmour to 'f*** off back to Chelsea'. Give him back then. He's never put a foot wrong for his parent club and was Scotland's shining light in their Euros campaign as well. He's obviously a huge talent who will only get better and can only do so much when there's no direction around him.

So desperate for a scapegoat that they ignore the basic facts. Complaints that the midfielder passes to the opposition, yet has one of the highest pass success rates on the entire team. Also averages more tackles and dribbles than any single Norwich player this season. If it's creativity they're looking for - the Scotland international has made four more key passes than any of his teammates - and in six fewer matches.

It is nothing short of embarrassing that they've singled out this young player who by and large is one of the best they've got this season. They have set the bar very low, but still. It could not be clearer that Gilmour is not the problem with the Canaries misfortunes - but their fans are making a case for themselves being part of a growing issue.

Chelsea should intervene on his behalf - play the good parent (club). Whether that's to rotate into the first team's current crop of injury plagued stars or to find him a new foster home for the remainder of the season. One that allows him to progress as a player and where fans appreciate what he brings to the table.

Norwich fans can f*** off back to the Championship while Billy Gilmour returns to the Champions of Europe.

Conor Gallagher may have caught the eye on loan at West Brom last season. But it's this campaign under Patrick Vieira at Crystal Palace he's become a man in demand.

Including an absolute worldie against Everton, the loan star has already scored six goals and registered three assists this season. Just one Chelsea player has been involved in more Premier League goals - and it's not any of the strikers.

The midfielder's performances at Selhurst Park have been so good that Thomas Tuchel has been asked throughout the season if he would cut the loan deal short to bring him back to Chelsea in January.

While the Chelsea boss has been consistent in his response to let him continue his development with the Eagles, he has dropped a hint over the England U21's future at Stamford Bridge.

"We love Conor. We are convinced about him," said Tuchel.

"We took the decision for Conor because when we looked at the midfield – Mateo Kovacic, Jorginho, N’Golo Kante – he was considered number four in the group.

"Conor knew this all the way. An opportunity came up where he could clearly see more minutes and more responsibility.

"Would he be the same Conor if he had stayed here? Obviously not, because the situation will then be different.

"Maybe, then, the same people would say, ‘How can they rely on Conor Gallagher’?, or ‘Why don’t they give him more minutes’?

"If Mateo hadn’t been injured, it wouldn’t really matter. So, no, you cannot go back to these decisions that are made for the club and for the player. Everybody agreed on it.

"And it’s obviously a good decision because he is doing so well and everybody is happy. That’s because he plays every single game, and knows how important he is to the team at Crystal Palace. This is a huge part of being at the best level you can be."

Crystal Palace is the academy starlet's fourth loan spell away from the club. Along with his stint under Big Sam at West Brom, he also spent time at Swansea and Charlton and never failed to impress.

With Jorginho's agent constantly flirting with a return to Italy and N'Golo Kante struggling with ongoing issues with his knee, it looks like Chelsea already have a solution to any problem going.

Gallagher has made no secret of his desire to return to Chelsea and follow in the footsteps of Reece James and Mason Mount. While Tuchel seemingly remains a fan, next season could finally be his moment.

Aston Villa 1-3 Chelsea: The one where Luk is back

Chelsea's battle with Covid roulette hit another hurdle just hours before kicking off at Aston Villa. The home side's mid-week clash with Leeds was postponed leaving Villa free to field their strongest possible team while the Blues still had to consider their game against Brighton - among the current injuries and positive tests.

Thomas Tuchel made just two changes to the side that drew away at Wolves with Callum Hudson-Odoi returning to action following his period of self-isolation. And Trevoh Chalobah was restored to the defence allowing Cesar Azpilcueta a much needed break. CHO was part of an attacking trio that included Mason Mount and Christian Pulisic as a false nine. An experiment best not tried again.

The pressure was well and truly on the European champions as kick-off loomed. Chelsea had won just three of their previous eight Premier League matches - more often than not throwing away the lead. But current league leaders, Man City, only went and done a Boxing Day madness with a nine-goal thriller against Leicester opening up a nine point gap.

Despite being without manager Steven Gerrard, it was Villa who looked brighter in the opening stages of the match making Thiago Silva earn that contract extension. Thankfully he was up to the task - as ever - and they failed to capitalise allowing Chelsea to calm their nerves and play their way into all the possession. Despite their efforts and a stunning attempt from Mason Mount which just sailed over Emi Martinez' goal, it was Villa who took the lead through an unlikely source.

Just minutes after Mount's whipped ball it was Edouard Mendy picking the ball out of his net after Reece James gets on the wrong end of a pacey ball from Targett. And just like that it was through Mendy's outstretched hands and in. It's not often James puts a foot out of turn but he struggled throughout and it summed up his afternoon. No doubt it will be a one off, but that will be no less frustrating to the driven defender.

The travelling support had to wait just six minutes for an equaliser. Jorginho scoring from the spot after Callum Hudson-Odoi won a penalty through Matty Cash's rash challenge. While not personally a fan of the hop-skip-jump approach, I'll allow it for the equaliser. Chelsea went into the break on level terms but it was obvious a change was needed.

Tuchel reshuffled the pack to introduce Romelu Lukaku at the start of the second-half. Pulisic dropped into a wing-back role and James found himself with more cover in the back-three as Chalobah made way for Chelsea's number nine. It was a masterstroke giving a focal point to the attack. The American was like a ghost up front but found a way to be more effective as he dropped deeper. But it was CHO's cross that found Lukaku to take the lead just eleven minutes into the second half.

The Belgian continued to make his presence felt throughout the second half - clearly with a point to prove about his minutes being managed. But it worked to perfection - his introduction changed the game. Villa found it impossible to stop him once he got going - and as he raced towards Emi Martinez towards the end of the game - Ezri Konsa used the 'by any means necessary' method. Handing Jorginho his second penalty of the afternoon - a record breaker in a calendar year if you're into that sort of thing.

A near perfect Boxing Day with three points in the bag and Lukaku back to scoring. However defensive rock Thiago Silva was forced off through potential hamstring injury. And more worrying, Chelsea's perfect little midfield angel N'Golo has reaggravated his troublesome knee. Neither will likely feature against Brighton.

The first match of the season is always a special one. Seeing familiar faces. Catching up after a summer off. But with the pandemic shutting out fans since March of last year - the day started with an even bigger buzz than normal. At least for the fans who still had their seats. With those in charge failing to take care of the match-going fans, nearly one thousand Chelsea supporters found themselves without a seat on opening day - with less than 24 hours notice.

The Kings of Europe faced a new-look Crystal Palace under Patrick Vieira. From virtually kick-off it was evident that there's work to be done by the formal Arsenal man in bedding in so many new players. They've injected a lot of youth and energy into a previously aging squad. They'll need to click sooner than later if they're to keep their Premier League status.

Thomas Tuchel made five changes to the squad that played 120 minutes in Belfast for the Super Cup win, with both Hakim Ziyech and N'Golo Kante picking up injuries. Mason Mount, Cesar Azpilicueta, Andreas Christensen, Christian Pulisic, Jorginho and his ridiculous hair all started on Saturday. While Trevoh Chalobah made his Premier League debut after impressing against Villarreal.

Having been an outcast most of last season it was great to see Marcos Alonso starting back-to-back games for the first time since February. Whether these are 'shop-window' appearances or not, remains to be seen. But he's proved his worth. A constant threat and of course a lush free-kick to open the scoring. It was Chelsea's 50th of the Premier League, with only Manchester United having scored more. The sound of celebration from an actual full crowd was incredible. It's been far too long to hear that spontaneous burst of pure joy and something that football has more than missed over these last 18 months.

How it started

Before the break, the Blues sealed the win after Christian Pulisic pounced on a spilled cross to double the lead. Crystal Palace are Captain America's favourite opposition by some distance. He has now scored at least two more goals against them than any other team he has faced. He has now scored 14 goals in the Premier League, with five of those coming against Palace. It feels personal at this point. We now know who should be first on the teamsheet for the trip to Selhurst Park.

As brilliant as both goals were in the first half, it was the second-half strike that will be remembered. After finding himself in space 25 yards out, and the Stamford Bridge faithful urging him to shoot, it was Premier League debutant Chalobah who fired home to seal the points. A low drive into the far corner, a goal most strikers would be proud of. The young defender dropped to his knees overcome with emotion as his teammates surrounded him to congratulate him on such a special moment. I think there's something in my eye....

While neither Mason Mount nor Timo Werner found themselves on the scoresheet, both deserve a mention for their performances. The German for his incredible movement in and around Palace's box, creating space. He was unlucky not to score after getting on the end of a couple enthusiastic crosses. While Mount was as bright as ever, winning the ball in dangerous areas and making himself impossible to contain.

Chelsea made history Wednesday night in Belfast. After a slightly nerve-wracking penalty shootout, their Super Cup win means they are the first and only club to have won all four European trophies twice. Excluding of course, the new weird stepchild UEFA have brought in this season - the Europa Conference League. Not a bad haul for such a 'new club'.

With an eye on the Premier League's opening weekend, and players still recovering from international tournaments, Thomas Tuchel opted for a few surprise faces in the team to face Europa League winners Villarreal. Marcus Alonso, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Trevoh Chalobah all were named for a chance to impress and win their places for the upcoming season.

The Champions League winners put on a dominant display - at least for the opening half hour. Villarreal barely got a look in and were regularly forced to defend deep putting at least six men behind the ball at any given time. They proved last season they are not an easy team to break down, and Unai Emery is a lot more savvy than many ~~Arsenal fans~~ give him credit for.

After 27 minutes it was Hakim Ziyech who managed to find the breakthrough goal. He managed to get on the end of a lovely cross in from Kai Havertz and directed past it Sergio Asenjo. Continuing his brilliant pre-season form after scoring two against Tottenham last week. However, his good fortune was not to last.

After whispers of the Moroccan potentially having a breakout season and star in the Premier League, former Spurs 'star' Juan Foyth had other ideas. After coming together in a challenge for a header, Ziyech's evening came to an end with his shoulder dislocated. In fariness to Foyth, there was nothing in that challenge - certainly in comparison to most of the others they put in throughout the match. Emery might have this lot a little too fired up, especially after taking out Leicester's Wesley Fofana in a 'friendly' last week.

Whether it was the surprise injury or just some very tired legs, Chelsea's energy and concentration took a serious dip in the second half with the Spanish side growing in confidence. Threatening Edouard Mendy's goal on a number of occasions. Their eventual equaliser was really a matter of when and not if. Unsurprisingly it was star man Gerard Moreno with the goal, following a mistake from Antonio Rudiger.

Chelsea played themselves back into the game, regaining composure and possession. But failed for find a winner, forcing another 30 minutes. Which is definitely what a team full of players who got little down time over the summer needed just three days before they start the domestic season. As the clock ticked down and the penalty shoot-out approached, Tuchel shocked the socks off of just about everyone watching from Windsor Park to your telly at home. He had one final substitution to make, and used it on Kepa.

There was a bit of a buzz earlier when it appeared the young keeper was receiving instructions, and then headed down the tunnel with Henrique Hilario. When they reappeared, he was kitted up and ready to come on. Part of me hoped that Edouard Mendy would refuse to come off because it would have been amazing banter. But the consummate professional took his late substitution in stride and wished his counterpart the best of luck.

What a hero

In a rare turn, I was actually full of confidence in this bold move. Not in Tuchel.. but in Kepa himself. In all of the furor over his performances people have forgotten he was actually quite a good keeper. And not only that has saved a lot of penalties. Two striking ones in recent memory were against Valencia and the one he stopped with his knees against Eintracht Frankfurt. What he lacks in size he more than makes up for in agility.

The mentality that took for him to take on that role is unbelievable. He's lost his place as first team keeper, has a bunch of petulant children on social media constantly abusing him for his inclusion anywhere ever. And he's not even had a chance to get a feel for the game or even touch the ball. It was all on him to step up, and did he ever. Kai Havertz missing the first penalty could only have added to that. What an incredible performance and he deserves all the plaudits for those few moments of magic.

Two other players - other than the always perfect N'Golo Kante - that deserve a mention for their performances were Alonso and Chalobah. Alonso played like a man on a mission, out to prove to Tuchel he should be in the team - or showing potential suitors what he has to offer as he constantly was a threat to Villarreal's formidable defence. And Chalobah who absolutely stepped up and proved that he is deserving of a place in the first team, completely not phased by the occasion of a UEFA final.

What a way to kick off the season! Next up, Patrick Vieira's new-look Palace.

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has told club managers to be empathetic towards their players who featured in Euro 2020, especially those that played through the latter stages of the tournament.

The new Premier League season kicks off on the 13th of August, just five weeks after Italy triumphed over England in the final of the European Championships.

Pre-season training is already underway with players who were not involved in summer tournaments with a number of friendlies lined up to prepare the teams for a long season ahead.

Copa America and Euro 2020 followed a frantic season that saw fixture congestion compressed due to the coronavirus pandemic, without a reduction in number of matches played.

Players are at risk of injury along with exhaustion following the physical toll the last year has had with many Italy and England stars playing upwards of 60 matches across just 10 months.

Martin Keown has insisted that Premier League bosses keep that in mind as they prepare for the season ahead using Chelsea star Mason Mount as a key example.

The midfielder was key to Frank Lampard and Thomas Tuchel's Chelsea sides last season, which earned him a starting role for Gareth Southgate at Euro 2020 where he played a full 90' in five of England's seven matches.

Keown said on talkSPORT: 'Who is protecting the players? I am looking at statistics here on Mason Mount who has played 68 games between 12 September and 11 July.

'He is going to have five weeks before the start of the season, so what does he do? Take a two-week holiday?

'The players who have played to the latter stages of the tournament are going to need time to readjust this season.

'The players have had a compressed season due to Covid and they need some escape.

'It is a joy and an honour for players to represent England at Wembley at this stage but we need to make sure they are looked after and have a break.'

Arsene Wenger was always ahead of the curve with player welfare. Keown revealed the former Arsenal boss always guaranteed his players a certain amount of time off to allow them to recuperate and be fresh for the new season.

'I was lucky to have a manager who was sensible and who promised me a month off regardless of what happened - two weeks to have a break, and two weeks of an intense fitness regime,' added Keown.

'For athletes, they should be in touch with their body constantly and that pain from exercising should be their best friend - if that becomes an enemy, you are in trouble.

'These players need some space as they are in a pressure cooking where everyone is demanding and expecting that they win.

'Next season we are going to see four or five more games than before due to Europe, so I would like to see this new, modern PFA that we have to negotiate more space for the players.'

Keown continued: “Do the squads need to be bigger?

'Nobody appears to be thinking about the welfare of the players, and that is a big concern for me.

'Managers have to do that; they have to ensure that the likes of Mason Mount are used more sparingly at the start of next season.

'That has got to happen.'

While Mount is central to Tuchel's plans, it might be best for both the player and team if he is afforded additional down time.

Norwich have won the battle to sign Billy Gilmour from Chelsea on a season-long loan.

The young midfielder was linked to a number of Premier League sides, including Newcastle and Wolves, but Daniel Farke managed to convince Thomas Tuchel and the Chelsea board that this would be the right move for their burgeoning midfield star.

The Chelsea boss rejected Gilmour's request to go out on loan in January, wanting to keep him close to the first team for the remainder of last season. But with N'Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho remaining ahead of the young Scot in the pecking order it was important to get him minutes and further his development.

Tuchel worked closely with the board to find the right team to send Gilmour to. Of the teams clamoring for his signature, Norwich play a system similar to that of Chelsea's. Farke deploys 'double sixes' which will prepare the midfielder for his return to Stamford Bridge.

On his move to the newly-promoted side, Gilmour said 'I spoke to the manager here [Daniel Farke]. He called me and we had a nice talk about how he wants to play and how he sees me fitting in.

'Everything he said was what I want to do on the pitch, get the ball down and play nice football. He spoke really highly of his team and I wanted to come join here and help.

'The manager has a lot of faith in young players. He was saying that he’ll fit you in if you’re ready. I can see by when Norwich got relegated and came back up, he stuck by them and that shows how much faith you should have in the manager as well.'

The Norwich boss has spoken about their exciting loan signing.

Daniel Farke added: 'We are really happy to have brought Billy in. We must say a big thank you to Chelsea and all those involved for making this deal happen.

'We got the feeling that he can help us a lot with his ability to link the play, his technical qualities and also his work against the ball. From the football point of view, but also from his character he is the perfect fit to our squad.

'He will help us to achieve our targets. We still have to keep in mind that he is an unbelievably young guy and that he hasn't played regularly on this level. We have to give him some time and space to improve and find his rhythm.'

Billy Gilmour enjoyed a man of the match performance against England at Wembley. But his Euro 2020 was cut short after catching Covid-19. Forcing him to miss Scotland's final group game and delaying his loan deal until completing a period of self-isolation.

'Everything was going well, getting picked for my country and playing in the Euros,' he added.

'To miss a game out because of coronavirus wasn’t good but it was a little break and I’m now here, ready to go.

'I was so proud to represent my country at the Euros against England at Wembley. It doesn’t get much better than that.

'I really enjoyed the match, I was gutted about what happened in the end but it was a great step forward for me.'

Sweden have been the surprise of Euro 2020 so far. In a group with Luis Enrique's new-look Spain and Poland led by Robert Lewandowski, there's very few who would have expected them to top Group E. And with one of the oldest squads in the competition. But it's been youngster Alexander Isak who has been the driving force to their knockouts campaign.

Following his man of the match performance against Slovakia, Gary Lineker tweeted 'Don’t think there’s much doubt that Alexander Isak will attract a lot of attention from clubs across Europe. Exceptional talent.' He was not wrong.

The 21-year old, who has been branded as the 'next Zlatan Ibrahimovic', has been tipped as a target for Chelsea, in part due to his pre-existing relationship with Thomas Tuchel.

The Swedish star has impressed in La Liga this season with Real Sociedad, scoring 17 goals in 30 league starts. He joined the Spanish outfit in 2019 for just £13.5m from Borussia Dortmund.

Dortmund included a £25m buyback clause in the contract when they sold him, but it has since expired. Leaving Real Sociedad to drive the asking price. At minimum, any potential suitor would have to meet the £60m release clause that is currently set.

Thomas Tuchel has spoken very highly of the young Swede 'Alex is a very strong striker, who can play with his back toward goal and is strong in the combination. He scores a lot of goals, so it is great to have him here.

'The signing of Isak makes perfect sense. This gives the club a long-term solution for the position of striker. Isak is a very talented player.'

However his transfer to Borussia Dortmund from AIK in 2017 was met with controversy, with Tuchel leaving his role just a few months later following a blow up with the board over a number of issues.

The young star came up through the youth system of his boyhood club, AIK in Stockholm. And it didn't take long before he had a number of suitors from across Europe.

He reportedly rejected a move to Real Madrid before agreeing a transfer to Thomas Tuchel's Borussia Dortmund side.

However, the already unsettled boss did not immediately welcome the new addition to his squad. The German had been left in the dark over the young striker and made his feelings on the matter quite public.

'That's mostly transfers of players who can help immediately. You have to be involved from the very beginning.

'There are transfers like Alexander Isak now where the scouting staff and Michael Zorc do the groundwork. This means they know the player and he's on their radar because I did not know the player.

'It was like that with [summer signings] Ousmane Dembele and Emre Mor. They were scouted. My person only enters at a very late stage. That's just normal.'

He went on to say he 'did not veto the transfer' in an attempt to downplay the tensions with Zorc and give a fair opportunity to a young player in a new country.

Although their relationship is tipped to help Chelsea in any potential pursuit, it should be noted that Isak made just a single 4 minute cameo for Tuchel from a potential 25 eligible matches.

Cesc Fabregas has once again re-affirmed N'Golo Kante's nice guy status, not that it was ever in doubt. Throughout Euro 2020 the Spaniard has been sharing training ground stories and has revealed why Kante was once late to an important Chelsea team meeting.

Ahead of a League Cup clash with Arsenal in 2018, Kante was uncharacteristically late leaving his teammates in disbelief wondering where he was. The midfielder had been in a car crash in his beloved Mini Cooper, but was delayed further because he couldn't deny fans after they asked to pose for pictures with him.

He had collided with a lorry on the Kings Road on the way to Stamford Bridge. With the wing mirror getting knocked off in the process and damage to the wheel arch. Luckily the World Cup winner was unharmed.

Following the collision, the French star waited alongside his car for roadside services to arrive. As he did, a number of passing fans could not believe their luck in spotting him and asking for selfies. Naturally, Kante obliged despite having just been in an accident.

'Everybody knows he is a really good human being,' Fabregas wrote in the Daily Telegraph.

'One day, we met in the morning, we were playing at night, and everyone was "where's N'Golo, where's N'Golo, we're starting the meeting" and normally he was always on time.

'Eventually, he arrived and everyone started clapping and Antonio [Rudiger] said "what's happened?"

'And he was telling us that he's had a car crash and some people couldn't believe it was him and they were taking pictures and he wanted to be polite.

'His car was all damaged and the wing mirror had to be taped back on, but he still stopped for photographs, even though it made him late!'

Despite most players driving around in super cars and Range Rovers, and the club offering Audis to players, humble Kante has stuck with the same £20,000 model of Mini that he purchased when he first arrived at Leicester.

A fan at the scene said 'his wing mirror was smashed and his front wheel arch was all dented.

'He must have been pretty annoyed but he was more than happy for fans to take selfies with him.'

And when asked about his choice of vehicle, the Chelsea star revealed 'I was at Leicester City and it was my first car in England. One person advised a Mini, I tried and I liked it so I bought one.

'I’ve never been someone who loves a car.

'And when I was young I didn’t have the ambition of a car or something like that.'

N'Golo Kante has picked up Euro 2020 where his season with Chelsea left off. He starred in France's narrow 1-0 win over Germany, nullifying teammates Kai Havertz, Antonio Rudiger and Timo Werner.

Kai Havertz echoed Fabregas sentiments on Kante, but was not looking forward to facing him in the opening match.

'When you see [Kante], you have to smile. He is a great personality and a great person.

'And a great football player. As an attacking player, I'm always happy when he is on the pitch. You can make a lot of mistakes because he always wins the ball back. He's fast, agile and always gets his leg in.

'That's why it's not so nice to have to play against him in the first match of the European Championship, of course.'

Romelu Lukaku opens up on 'failed' time at Chelsea and insists he's staying at Inter

Romelu Lukaku has reiterated his desire to stay at Inter Milan amid continued links with a sensational return to Stamford Bridge.

The Belgian was named Serie A MVP following an impressive campaign that saw him score 24 league goals to fire Inter to their first Scudetto in 11 years.

The forward's sensational form has attracted the interest from clubs across Europe with both Man City and Chelsea being heavily linked with a move to bring him back to the Premier League.

In a recent interview with HLN, Lukaku was asked to choose between his former and current sides. His response was definitive.

' Inter. Inter. I have won a title with Inter. That was a childhood dream too. At one team I had success, at the other one it was a failure.'

Lukaku joined Chelsea from Anderlecht in 2011 for £10 million - £17 million with add-ons. He was given a five-year contract, but was moved on permanently after just three seasons making just ten appearances for the Blues.

The forward spent time on loan at both West Brom and Everton, before making his move to Goodison Park permanent.

He has blamed his time on the periphery at Stamford Bridge squarely on Andre Villas-Boas despite a number of managers taking charge of Chelsea while he was still on the books.

Speaking in an interview earlier this season, Lukaku fully revealed his frustrations with the Portuguese boss.

'Di Matteo told me that I would stay with the group until after the final,' Lukaku told HLN, as reported by AD.

'He thought everyone should come along, including the ones who were suspended and the few boys who were not in the Champions League squad.

'I am also grateful to him for that. This win is one of the things I've always dreamed about.

'You want to celebrate something like that with the team at that time. That is nice in itself at the age of nineteen.

'I am happy for the whole club, but there is one man who took a lot from me: the previous trainer (Villas-Boas). I will never forgive him for that.'

Lukaku blames AVB for his 'failed' time at Chelsea

With Inter's financial situation remaining a bit of a disaster, Lukaku will continue to be linked with a big-money move away. While Antonio Conte was the man to ultimately get the best out of him, the former Man United man reveals he has held positive talks with new Inter boss Simone Inzaghi ahead of next season.

Chelsea will continue their pursuit of any forward vaguely on the market to get goals back into the side. While Harry Kane's name does get mentioned in passing, it is unlikely that the player would consider a move to Stamford Bridge.

Reports suggest Erling Haaland remains Thomas Tuchel's top summer target, ignoring that he's controlled by super-agent Mino Raiola. Borussia Dortmund are adamant that he will remain at the club next season. Marina Granovskaia will have her work cut out for her negotiating terms with both club and agent to prise the super human striker away.

Chelsea are set to pocket £25million from the sale of Fikayo Tomori to AC Milan this summer.

Following a stunning loan spell, the Italian giants have made their intentions to land the young defender on a permanent deal clear.

Having fallen out of favour under Frank Lampard, he joined the Rossoneri on loan in January and played a key role in securing Champions League football for next season under manager Stefano Pioli.

The club reportedly triggered a clause within Tomori's loan deal that would allow them to keep him on a permanent basis, with a five-year deal expected to be announced imminently.

The ~~Canadian~~ English centre-back made 22 appearances for Milan and blocked more shots per game than any of his teammates in Serie A this season.

He has enjoyed praise from everyone at the club from manager Pioloi to legends Paolo Maldini and Franco Baresi as they continue their pursuit of a permanent deal.

Baresi has said that 'Tomori is imposing himself with talent and determination. He has shown no fear playing in a new league.

'He can potentially become a great champion. I hope he lives up to expectations.'

While a decent boost to Thomas Tuchel's transfer kitty this summer, it could be an error to let a such a talent who has been with the Chelsea academy since he was just 8 years old.

He enjoyed previous loan spells at Brighton and Hull before playing for Frank Lampard at Derby County. His performances were so impressive with the Rams that he was voted their Player of the Year.

Despite his recent successes on the pitch he was overlooked by Gareth Southgate even for his extended provisional squad, which came to the surprise of AC Milan teammate and Croatia star Ante Rebic.

'Honestly, I am a bit surprised because from their choice of centre halves, they all seem to have the same characteristics,' Rebic said.

'Fik is aggressive and fast. We talked and he said that he didn't believe he was going to be called up. So I'm a bit surprised.'

Milan are hoping for a big summer transfer window with Chelsea. Not only are they trying to finalise a permanent deal for Tomori, but have made overtures for both Olivier Giroud and Hakim Ziyech.

Chelsea managed to trigger a surprise contract extension for Olivier Giroud in April, but only recently revealed this savvy bit of business. While it doesn't guarantee another season of incredible link-up play and Puskas Award winning goals, it does guarantee a fee if he does move on.

The French forward has bizarrely not be part of Thomas Tuchel's plans despite the side calling out for goals. Giroud will not want another season on the bench and will likely leave this summer. His representatives have opened talks with Milan but a deal is unlikely to be announced until after Euro 2020.

Hakim Ziyech could also push for a move away with Tuchel unconvinced by this Frank Lampard signing. Limited to cameo appearances of varying quality, it could be a deal that works out for everyone.

Chelsea have had a busy start to the week. Following on from their reported interested in Erling Haaland, the European champions have made a bid for Inter star Achraf Hakimi.

Marina Granovskaia got out Roman Abramovich's chequebook on Tuesday morning to match PSG's £56million bid. Clearly Inter were hoping for a bidding war not two of the wealthiest clubs in Europe to just match one another's bids. Both were soundly rejected, with the Serie A champions valuing the defender somewhere north of £70million.

Chelsea were hoping that a player plus cash deal would give them the edge. With both Emerson and Andreas Christensen being offered like sacrificial lambs. Antonio Conte had hoped to bring Emerson to the club while still in charge and they reportedly still retain interest in him despite Don Conte's abrupt departure.

However with crippling debts, it appears that the Nerazzurri are hoping to keep such deals separate and are not feeling the summer of swaps. They would like cash for their own assets before pursuing the players they need in a potential mass restructure.

While Emerson has been persona non grata for some time, it comes as some surprise that Andreas Christensen is viewed as excess goods. While he struggled for form since returning from Borussia Monchengladbach, he more than any player saw his individual performance flourish under the guidance of Thomas Tuchel.

The Danish defender has given some of his best performances ever over the last five months. Until suffering an injury ahead of the FA Cup final he was one of the few ever present stars in Chelsea's impressive defence.

Achraf Hakimi is largely regarded as one of the best right wing backs in Europe at the moment after playing a key role in helping Antonio Conte's side win their first Scudetto in 11 years.

The 22 year-old's agent, Alejandro Camano, remains adamant that he will remain at the San Siro and has yet to speak to clubs about an exit.
