Karen Oberlin and Steve Ross, two award-winning cabaret and concert performers, join forces in a new show entitled Astaire and Rogers: Cheek to Cheek. Before coming together in this tour de force performance, Mr. Ross toasted Fred Astaire and Ms. Oberlin gave tribute to Ginger Rogers in I Won’t Dance: The Songs of Fred Astaire (York Theater) and the Ginger Rogers centennial celebration, respectively. Now, Fred has found his modern-day Ginger in this new concert celebrating the most beloved duo in celluloid history.

Mr. Ross and Ms. Oberlin will include duets and solos from Fred and Ginger’s ten films together, with songs from Golden Age masters Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, the Gershwins, Jerome Kern, and others. THE WIZARDS OF OZ: THE SONGS OF ARLEN AND HARBURG

KAREN OBERLIN, after headlining at the Algonquin's Oak Room and Feinstein's, is making her debut at the Cafe Carlyle with an extraordinary new show, The Wizards of Oz: The Songs of Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg, before taking this show to London's exquisite Crazy Coqs club the following week. This tribute to America's most extraordinary songwriters blossomed from a tribute to E.Y. Yip Harburg she has performed to great acclaim in New York, at Caramoor, Palm Beach and in Paris. The convergence of the two titans of song reached its creative and popular pinnacle in 1939 with the beloved film "The Wizard of Oz." The best known among them, "Over the Rainbow," is now widely accepted as nothing less than "the greatest song of the twentieth century." Beyond the music for that film of all films, Arlen and Harburg created dozens of blockbuster hits and masterpieces of Broadway and popular songs.

Oberlin is making two debuts on November 14th, at the Cafe Carlyle and of her new show, which she takes to London on her return engagement there the following week:

Having a deep love and affinity for both of these songwriters, in her Harburg show the New York Times stated it was a "smart, polished show" and about her treatment of these songs that she has "impeccable pop style," "musical intelligence" and "delicately voluptuous phrasing." Rex Reed called her performance "thrilling," and still another New York critic called it "one of the greatest musical events of the year." On the other side of the rainbow, the mutually created masterpieces include "Last Night When We Were Young," "Happiness Is Just A Thing Called Joe," "Down With Love," and of course Groucho Marx's "Lydia the Tattooed Lady," among many other gems. In the show, Oberlin explores some of these musical geniuses' songs before they had joined forces, and what helped make the magic between them. Their songs burst with humor, beauty and intelligence, not to mention the songwriters' MUTUAL devotion to improving the human condition. Karen Oberlin brings back her multiple award-winning, acclaimed tribute to Frank Loesser which she created and performed for three weeks at the Algonquin's Oak Room. The show, a Critics' Pick of New York Magazine and called "a smart, polished show" by the New York Times and "thrilling" by Rex Reed, delves into the life and music of this fascinating composer and lyricist as she performs many of his classics as well as rarities from the Loesser canon. Oberlin explores the delicious wit, beauty and depth of Loesser's timeless songs. Oberlin, praised by THE NEW YORK TIMES as "a jazzier inheritor of Day's impeccable pop style," pays tribute to the under-appreciated jazz side of singer Doris Day, as Day turns 85.
Through her own interpretations and without imitation, Oberlin reexamines Doris Day, who was a jazz artist 'before she was a virgin,' in Oscar Lavant's phrase. Together with the endlessly inventive Tedd Firth Septet, Oberlin, called 'thrilling' by Rex Reed in the NEW YORK OBSERVER, brings the songs to radiant, new life.

Doris Day began her singing career touring with the Les Brown Band at 16, left the band briefly to have a child, then returned to Brown and his band to make their biggest hit, 'Sentimental Journey.' She went on to record many esteemed jazz albums, such as 'Duet' with Andre Previn. The set provides many re-imagined interpretations of her best known songs and lots of surprises, including a new, surprise special guest to help her sing her co-written, hilarious duet.

Oberlin, praised by THE NEW YORK TIMES as "a jazzier inheritor of Day's impeccable pop style," pays tribute to the under-appreciated jazz side of singer Doris Day, as Day turns 85.

Oberlin, through her own interpretations and without imitation, reexamines Doris Day, who was a jazz artist 'before she was a virgin,' in Oscar Lavant's phrase. Together with the endlessly inventive Tedd Firth Septet, Oberlin, called 'thrilling' by Rex Reed in the NEW YORK OBSERVER, brings the songs to radiant, new life.

Doris Day began her singing career touring with the Les Brown Band at 16, left the band briefly to have a child, then returned to Brown and his band to make their biggest hit, 'Sentimental Journey.' She went on to record many esteemed jazz albums, such as 'Duet' with Andre Previn.
