Dear Ma'am,

Congratulations for finally landing into the muddy waters of Politics. While what you have been cursing throughout your life and probably have been a victim of when you were not made the Commissioner of Delhi, it must be a pretty good feeling I am sure. Your decision of joining BJP doesn't really spring a surprise to me though. It was very much expected from the day you started ranting against your friend-turned-foe Kejriwal.

Ma'am, I have grown up listening to the stories of your courage and honesty from my parents. They told me that you fined Indira Gandhi's car when she was a PM back then. They told me that you came to be known as "Crane Bedi" when you started a campaign against the cars parked in No Parking. However, little did I know that you had courage to eat your own words. Never did I thought that you would yourself park your car at a place where you warned people not to park your car at. And where "BJP". As your big time fans right from the Aap ki Adaalat to Anna Hazare movement, we surely deserve a chance to know the story of your Hriday-Parivartan. Or was the bait of CM of Delhi too irresistible for you to even ponder upon what you had been preaching throughout your life. Or probably you were never apolitical. Probably you were only anti-Congress and you named it as anti-politics throughout.

But now when you have joined BJP, I would request you to please answer the following questions :

1. Did BJP accept to be under the purview of RTI -one of your demands last year?

2. Did BJP agree on JanLokpal?

3. Will you be happy working with Yeddyurappa and other ministers in the party with corruption charges?

4. If you had to join politics, why not join AAP. Was your ego more important than the country?

5. Did Modi suddenly come clean on riots of what you have been blaming him for?

6. Are you the same person who was seen hoisting the flag of India when Annaji was on fast against corruption?

Ma'am, when you were targeted for the embezzlement of funds in your NGO when you while being a part of the Corruption crusade, the whole of nation stood by you because you were the hope back then. But then you choose to go and become the part of despair yourself.

With a very heavy heart, I wish you all the best for your political journey. I still have hope that you would not dare opposing your own party on their wrongdoings, if they happen.

And yes, thanks to you that I am now even more determined to vote for Kejriwal.- A Common Man

Maharashtra Politics – Can Modi afford to cheat people of Maharashtra?

Last year BJP took a high moral ground in Delhi by not going for government formation, though it came out as the single largest party. BJP was short of numbers for forming government in Delhi and refused to explore any further options. Kejriwal effect was at pick those days, everyone wanted to play fair politics. BJP was very careful and didn’t want to take any risk that can have repercussions on upcoming general elections.

A year later BJP again stood out as the single largest party, this time in Maharashtra. Although BJP was again short of more than 20 MLAs, this was celebrated as an unforeseen victory of BJP. This time it was more than happy to form a minority government in Maharashtra with 123 MLAs.

People of Maharastra had a tough time. They were obviously fed up of the Congress NCP alliance and were prepared to wipe it off. The obvious choice they were left with was BJP – Shivsena alliance. But at the eleventh hour, Shiv Sena and BJP parted there ways. Shivsena campaigned against BJP and went to compare it with Afzal Khan trying to encroach upon the legacy of Shivaji Maharaj. BJP campaigned aggressively against Congress NCP alliance. Narendra Modi himself called NCP as Naturally Corrupt Party.

Maharashtra politics has ever been in headlines since then. Immediately after the results were out, people were taken aback with the announcement by NCP of supporting BJP government from outside. Though it was unsolicited and unconditional support, the hidden conditions were obvious.

With the ongoing ego tussle between Uddhav Thakare and Narendra Modi, the age-old alliance partners could not reach to an understanding. Shiv Sena has now declared to occupy opposition bench in Maharashtra Assembly. NCP too has toughened its stand, latest being not to vote in if no confidence motion is called for.

So now BJP government in Maharashtra is at the mercy of NCP. People of Maharashtra gave a mandate against Congress NCP alliance and the first thing that they expect from the government is to act against the NCP leaders who are involved in number of scams. Would BJP government in Maharashtra act against NCP leaders? Off course not. Scamsters would again be left off.

People of India are much more politically aware as reflected from the recent trends. They would surely not BJP let go this time. BJP will find it really tough in the upcoming assembly elections in 3 states. It would detrimental if BJP continues to remain in the delusion of Modi wave. Though BJP has been trying encash in the name of Modi Sarakar even in assembly elections, people have seen the Modi Sarakar in last 6 months. They have already been cheated on number of issues like Black Money, Robert Vadra, Decriminalization of politics.

Its high time that BJP comes out of this euphoria and starts respecting aspirations of people. People of India are looking for the real alternative not the same political rhetoric with a new label.

The eminent lawyer writes another open letter to the finance minister: 'I want to show to the nation that you are determined to see that Prime Minister Modi can never fulfill his pledge to the unfortunate people of India to get back the black money'

An Open Letter To The Hon’ble Minister of Finance

Dear Minister,

I am not using your name because I am concerned only with your acts and omissions as Finance Minister in the Modi government and earlier as Leader of Opposition. The contents of this letter are meant primarily for the Chairman and the Vice-Chairman of the SIT and only secondarily for the education and enlightenment of your Ministry and the people of India in general.

India being a democracy, transparency of governmental operations is a fundamental obligation. Secrecy, and what you call confidentiality, have become very attractive to your ministry and they need to be put in proper prospective. Usually the two are associated with criminal activity, though I am conscious of some exceptional situations in which there may be a moral and legal compulsion.

I must confess that I have carefully watched your conduct as Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha. Never once did you raise the issue of black money stashed abroad by persons who are no better than dacoits, and the enormous mindboggling volume of the loot. If I am wrong in this view of mine, kindly do enlighten the nation as to what you have done after you became the Leader of Opposition in the upper house in the matter of recovery of black money.

Now I want you to answer the following questions as honestly as you can.

(1) Are you aware that the German government in February 2008 made a public statement in newspapers circulating throughout the world that it will provide tax authorities in other countries, details of relevant clients from the DVD obtained by them from an ex employee of the bank on payment of roughly 475 million US dollars. The DVD contained names of 1400 clients of the Liechtenstein Bank. The German finance ministry spokesman Thorsten Albig said they will willingly share this information at no cost and condition to any requesting country. How did you react to this offer? Did you raise this issue in Parliament?

(2) Did you advise the BJP to do something about this grand offer which certainly made me excited and must have likewise brought some hope in the life of the forsaken and forlorn, who could well be the victims of the loot? Did you advise the party immediately to dispatch some emissary to Germany and secure this information?

(3) Did you come to know—if yes, when?—that the prestigious Swiss magazine called the Swiss Illustrate had announced in 1991 the names, the photographs, the account numbers and the concealed loot in their accounts of 14 international crooks amongst whom the late, then recently killed, Prime Minister of India was one? Did you as an educated Indian citizen react to this news and if so, how?

(4) During the last election campaign for Parliament when our Prime Minister went around the country and spoke about repatriation of this black money, did you speak about it anywhere or write about it anywhere? Do tell me what and where?

(5) Do you know that in March, 2014 in the midst of the campaign I personally went to Germany and on my return recorded my discussions with the highest in the German ministry and the promise which I received from them about sharing this information with us. This letter was sent to your party leaders and I wanted some little help. Was that help of signing a letter of request to the Germans complied with? Did you do anything about it yourself? Have you done anything about it after you have become minister of finance?

(6) Is it correct that even before the election results were announced you had managed to secure an assurance from the party leaders that you would be made the minister of finance? Is it true that the party leaders carried out the pre-election promise by putting you in this ministry?

(7) When you were ultimately sworn in as India’s minister of finance, did you even once seek my cooperation and some education in techniques of recovery?

(8) Is it true that in the sitting of the Rajya Sabha of 8th July, 2014, you answered a question of a Member of Parliament relating to black money? Do you confirm the question asked and the reply that you gave which is reproduced here to refresh your memory.

“* 32. SHRI SHANTARAM NAIK:

Will the Minister of Finance be pleased to state:

(a) whether Government has made any request regarding black money held by Indian nationals in Swiss bank;

(b) when the request was sent and what was the information sought;

(c) whether it is a fact that parliament of Swiss Government has passed a law called, ‘The Swiss tax Administrative Assistance Act’;

(d) If so, when this Act was passed.

(e) whether the changes to be brought in under the law have to be approved through a referendum; and

(f) the details of response given by the Swiss Government in this regard, so far?”

Finance Ministry’s Answer to this question

“(a) Yes, Sir.

(b) and (f) : After the amendments to the Double Taxation Avoidance Convention (DTAC) with Switzerland came into force on 7th October, 2011, several requests seeking information in respect of Indian Nationals holding bank accounts in Swiss Banks in specific cases have been made. There has been a positive response to some requests, where information has been provided subject to the confidentiality clause in the said DTAC. In other cases, the Swiss Government has not been providing the information requested citing restrictions imposed by their domestic laws. Recently, reports appearing in the media on 22nd and 23rd June, 2014 indicated that during an ongoing exercise to identify the real beneficiaries or owners of funds held in various banks operating in Switzerland, the names of some Indian individuals and entities had been identified by the Swiss Government, who may have held untaxed money in Swiss banks through structures like trusts, domiciliary companies and other legal entities based out of countries other than India. A letter was accordingly written to Swiss Authorities on 23rd June, 2014 under the provisions of Article 26 of the DTAC between India and Switzerland, requesting them to provide the information in this regard that has been complied by Switzerland. The Swiss authorities in their reply dated 4th July, 2014 have stated that there is no list of Indian Tax residents holding assets in Swiss financial institutions in their own names or through structures.

(c), (d) and (e) : As per the information available on the website of the Federal authorities of the Swiss Federation (http://www.admin.ch), the Tax Administrative Assistance Act (TAAA) passed by the Swiss parliament came into force on 1st February, 2013. The Swiss Parliament approved the revision of the TAAA on 21st March, 2014. As per the information available on the said website, any proposed enactment, which includes changes in the existing law, may be subject to referendum in Switzerland. The referendum deadline will expire on 10th July, 2014 and if no referendum is called for by that date, the amended TAAA will come into force on 1st August, 2014.”

(9) Is it true that so far as your ministry is concerned you never invoked the provisions of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC) for securing this information from any country of the world. In no correspondence with any country have you invoked this document?

(10) Is this because your Ministry was not aware of this document as well as its ratification by Germany, Switzerland and India or knowing about this document you made no use of it? Have you or officers in the ministry read this document till today? Do tell the nation when you read it for the first time.

(11) Are you aware of the ‘Second report of the Task Force of the BJP on the steps to be taken by India’ in the matter of Indian Black Money Abroad in Secret Banks and Tax Havens running into 95 pages. I am sure this must have been read by you. Did you read “XIII. The Double Taxation Treaty with Switzerland” at page 26 of this document which described the Double Taxation treaty as an impotent instrument. Of course when this report was written in January 2011, the ratification of UNCAC by India had not taken place, though many other countries had ratified it long before. Did you read at the foot of page 23 -24 the warning of Admiral (retd.) R.H Tahiliani, the head of Transparency International India chapter?

(12) Do you know that before you took office, India did ratify this when the Manmohan Singh government was still in power. Yet you did not use it at all. You continued to use the DTAA because it was the favourite device of the previous government.

(13) Are you aware that Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, our President now had recommended the use of this useless document in his otherwise useless white paper on Black money. Ofcourse you would not know that his white paper was itself called a Black Paper.

For lack of space I am stopping this and it will be continued in the next issue of the Sunday Guardian. By now you must have discovered that I want to show to the nation that you are determined to see that Prime Minister Modi can never fulfil his pledge to the unfortunate people of India to get back the black money.

You, Mr Finance Minister, are the biggest obstacle.

I noticed that the prices of some electronic goods are changing on a daily basis like gold/rupee. I followed a product's price for a week and it fluctuated by up to 2500/-. Don't know what logic goes here..

Here is my understanding.....

Flipkart recently announced The Big Billion Day sale on 6th October 2014 as an equivalent to the Black Friday sale in the USA. Lots of people are excited about it. They claim to give 30%-90% discounts on most products. They claim some of the categories of products on sale are clothing, perfumes, phones, laptops, etc. So I decided to check out whether these claims of discount is real or not. Thanks to “Compare Hatke” chrome extension from BuyHatke, we can understand how the prices were in the last few days and whether they have suddenly increased or not! I’m taking totally unrelated items to show the price comparison here..

Swayam Doublesheet which has been consistent at around Rs.1124 for over a month now, has suddenly shot up to Rs.1500. Tomorrow they might show a 30% discount and reduce it to original price!

Van Heusen Slim Fit Men’s trousers which were hovering between Rs.1200 to Rs.1700 in the last 1 month have suddenly shot up to Rs.2200 in just 1 day! Cool technique to show people a huge Rs.500 discount on their favorite trousers on 6th October??!!

One of the best selling perfumes, Calvin Klein Be Eau de Toilette, had its price hovering around Rs.1650 for the last 3 months, suddenly it has shot up by around Rs.300 and is now available at Rs.1920.. Even Compare Hatke chrome extension which doesn’t know about this pseudo sale is suggesting only around 40% of the time to buy this product at the current price as they know prices might come down soon!

I have not even scratched the surface of this issue as I’m just looking at the price fluctuations on Flipkart site itself. There have been many instances (in fact in the above screenshots itself) where it was mentioned by Compare Hatke that cheaper products are available on Ebay, Amazon and well Flipkart itself before they discontinued older priced products! But the shocking fact was the above image of a Soch sari which is exorbitantly priced on Flipkart site when the same can be bought for less than half the price on Soch website itself. What kind of discounts are you talking about then, Flipkart?

Like they say, being well informed is to be empowered. So don’t fall for the marketing trap and ensure that you make the right decision while buying the products, be it The Billion Day or Diwali Dhamaka Week!

What a DIN about DINs. Just like Nitin Gadkari (No, you can’t check now, the extra DINs nicely show “not yet issued” now that a better government is in place.)

Sunanda Pushkar Found dead in Delhi Hotel - Twitter Controversy

Latest Development on the Death Controversy

New Delhi, Jan 17: Sunanda Pushkar, who was upset over an alleged extra-marital affair between her minister husband Shashi Tharoor and a Pakistani journalist, was found dead in a five-star Hotel Leela room no 345.
The incident came to fore around 8pm after the hotel authorities informed the police.

Pushkar had checked into the five star hotel on Thursday, police said. Sources said she was last seen at 3.30pm on Friday in the hotel lobby.

The housekeeping staff apparently knocked on Sunanda’s door at 7pm but got no response. The hotel staff allegedly opened the room with another swipe card and found her dead on her bed, sources in south Delhi police told TOI.

On Twitter along with his wife Sunanda Pushkar have been trending on Twitter a day after he tweeted that his account has been hacked (allegedly by a Pakistani national).

Shashi Tharoor is Minister of State for Human Resource Development in the Manmohan Singh government.

In the latest row, Tharoor’s wife Sunanda Pushkar has alleged that a Pakistani journalist is after her husband.

Why December 4, 2013 can be a golden letter day in History of India

Dear Friends,

We all have been living in this country and have taken things for granted , like our citizenship, our rights, our duties, facilities we get from our government, life we get as a citizen of India. We may appreciate other countries , their lives and blame our system for all the problems we face. It is a good way to give a vent to our frustration.

We blame our country for all this, but who makes this country.. It is we as citizens. We choose our leaders and entrust them with the responsibility of developing this society/ country. The leaders come from different political parties. They shape the future of societies with different laws and policies. We have seen in these last 66 years that we are not developing as fast as we could have. I am not saying good work would not have been done or the problems have not been solved… But..66 Years is not a short span of time… Our pace has been slow because of the vested interest we have in our political class.

Let us take a simple example for better understanding I hire a cook for my home and entrust him the responsibility of handling kitchen. The cook in this process has absolute control in all kitchen matters. He buys vegetables from his own relative, purchases grocery from shop where he gets commission, takes all dry fruits, milk , cream, curd and ghee at his own home. He still claims he is doing his best to serve us the finest food. But we are still not liking it. We actually have a problem with us rather than it being with him. Fed up of all this I decide to start cooking myself. Now he starts complaining and shouting.

This is actually the situation with present political class. When we as people demanded things we wanted for ourselves. They said you come in as elected representative and become eligible to draw legislation. When we decided to actually do it, they are shouting we do not have experience.

But there are few things we owe to our next generation.. our Kids. They should be proud of being an Indian Citizen. And we have a right to shape up our future.

For this we need to come out of this complacency, attitude of ‘CHALTA HAI !!’. We may be don't have a time/ resources to CONTRIBUTE in this nation building, but yes we still we can let this ‘change for good’ happen to our country.

A new Party is in election fray this time.. AAM ADMI PARTY (AAP). It is a breath of fresh air in this rotten system. I am recommending this party because If I do not support this movement this time, may be it might come to an end and I will have to wait for another 25-30 years for some changes to happen in my country. The political class will presume whatever they have done in past 60 years was good and we deserve no better. I do not want to say it to my children that your country is just like that.. we can not change it.

This Delhi Election might be the starting point and example for a national movement. I am not happy with the present political class/ political system. My country could have also been a developed and powerful nation had politicians not misused it. I am a common man and want to see power of a common man If they win, it will not be a victory of any leader.. but of us directly I can see the truth behind Sting Operations carried on AAP.

If We do not consider this as our responsibility, who else will?

It (AAP) has to be different for being in business.

Those who dared us to come through political channel for our voices to be heard by them, need to be taught a lesson.

I have not forgotten “Nirbhya” gang rape and the treatment our government gave to us during protests.

I have to do this as an experiment for my children’s future.

We now need to act. Me alone can not bring this change… We all have to be a part of it. I am not a politician, leader or supporter of any political party. But I have a Dream for this country. The dream to be a superpower some day.. To have a system where fairness is guaranteed to society.. A city, I can be proud of as a resident. If I am able to get 10 votes from this letter. I would be contended that I have contributed in this process of change. We are all gifted with a unique set of skills and abilities. With those abilities we can make extra-ordinary things happen in the world around us, or not.

It is completely up to you whether you want your life to make a difference and what difference you want your life to make.

Many people set lofty goals for their lives and want to be remembered as visionaries, they want to change and save the world.

Others want to be remembered as the kind man or women down the street who always helped and always listened if you needed help.

Who do you think is the better person?

The one who changes the world or the one who saves the individual?

Do what not have to do incredible things; just being there for the people around you can save someone from a meaningless life and help them lead the life they were meant to live.

Small things matter

Changing the life of another person is an incredible feeling and it is completely within your grasp. You can do this by deciding to become a mentor for a young ambitious person. You can help them avoid the mistakes you have made and help them learn from the ones they will inevitably make themselves.

Fight for someone's rights

You will often see someone get treated unfairly. It happens both professionally and socially, individuals who deserve recognition do not get it.

If you descend the long rope-ladders back to your people and time in the fabric, if you tell them what you have seen, and even if someone cares to listen, then what? Everyone knows times and cultures are plural. If you come back a shrugging relativist or tongue-tied absolutist, then what? If you spend hours a day looking around, high astraddle the warp or woof of your people's wall, then what new wisdom can you take to your grave for worms to untangle? Well, maybe you will not go into advertising. Then you would know your own death better but perhaps not dread it less. Try to bring people up the wall, carry children to see it to		what end? Fewer golf courses? What is wrong with golf? Nothing at all. Equality of wealth? Sure; how? The woman watching sheep over there, the man who carries embers in a pierced clay ball, the engineer, the girl who spins wool into yarn as she climbs, the smelter, the babies learning to recognize speech in their own languages, the man whipping a slave's flayed back, the man digging roots, the woman digging roots, the child digging roots what would you tell them? And the future people what are they doing? What excitements sweep peoples here and there from time to time? Into the muddy river they go, into the trenches, into the caves, into the mines, into the granary, into the sea in boats. Most humans who were ever alive lived inside one single culture that never changed for hundreds of thousands of years; archaeologists scratch their heads at so conservative and static a culture. Over here, the rains fail; they are starving. There, the caribou fail; they are starving. Corrupt leaders take the wealth. Not only there but here. Rust and smut spoil the rye. When pigs and cattle starve or freeze, people die soon after. Disease empties a sector, a billion sectors. People look at the sky and at the other animals. They make beautiful objects, beautiful sounds, beautiful motions of their bodies beating drums in lines. They pray; they toss people in peat bogs; they help the sick and injured; they pierce their lips, their noses, ears; they make the same mistakes despite religion, written language, philosophy, and science; they build, they kill, they preserve, they count and figure, they boil the pot, they keep the embers alive; they tell their stories and gird themselves. Will knowledge you experience directly make you a Buddhist? Must you forfeit excitement per se? To what end? Say you have seen something. You have seen an ordinary bit of what is real, the infinite fabric of time that eternity shoots through, and time's soft-skinned people working and dying under slowly shifting stars. Then what? Love is said to be the most beautiful feeling on Earth. The people who experience this feeling are said to be the luckiest people on Earth.

People often say that they can live their life happily if it filled with love and that they can live without money. But when we go deeper into this statement it proves to be false. It is true that money cannot buy love and happiness but money certainly can buy things through which an individual can express his or her love and also buy essential stuff which would make them happy. There is a famous saying “it is better to cry in a BMW rather than on a cycle”. This statement is indeed true. It is better to be comfortably unhappy than being uncomfortably unhappy.

“Love makes the world go around but money buys the riches”.

Love is essential in each and every individual’s life but money is also extremely essential to live a luxurious life because we are human beings not animals. It is money which improves our condition or else what is the difference between a human being and an animal.

Human being stay in cozy homes, eat whatever they want, do whatever they feel like, travel the world, just with power of money. Ask anyone how many famous lovers they can name as compared to naming famous millionaires and they will most certainly be in a position to name the famous millionaires. It is money and money alone that brings along fame and goodwill with it.

If only love would have been sufficient for an individual to be happy all the poor people today would be content and happy. It is wrong to think that love is all we need. Money too is equally important. It is only in fairy-tales that love alone can make people happy. We live in a practical world sufficient amount of money is extremely depressing and frustrating. If an individual cannot fulfill his or her daily needs, it would be impossible to think about anything other than money, leave alone lone.

In this 21^st century world, money is so important that today in most of the household, almost every adult member earn their own living. This is essential to keep at par with the society and it’s raising standards today because people who have more money are considered to be more important by everyone. This is a bitter truth. Moreover , can you contribute for the development of the society and even your own family if you do not possess sufficient money, you cannot. It is therefore essential to use your mind instead of your heart when you try to understand the importance of money.

With the announcement of their newest totally real project, Google is making it clear that they know where the future of online entertainment really is: smells. Meet Google Nose.

With Google Nose, you’ll be able to stop and smell the roses without having to stop a damned thing.

So, how can you take part in on Google’s new olfactory odyssey? It’s easy! You don’t even have to tweet at Google in hopes that you’ll win the opportunity to give them a pile of money for the appropriate hardware. You’ve already got the appropriate hardware! Just Google for your scent of choice (be it a wet dog, a cracklin’ campfire, or the gym), tap the “smell” button, and sniff away. Google will “intersect photons with infrasound waves” to emulate the requested aroma. That, my friends, is science.

If it doesn’t work right away, just lean closer and keep on sniffin’ — like many a Google product that came before it, this one is in Beta, so it might not work every time. (And, like many a Google product that came before it, they’ll probably kill it off in about 2 weeks)

Google Announces Opt-Out Tool To Keep Content Out Of Its Specialized Search Engines

Google has launched a new way for sites to opt out of having their content show up in Google Shopping, Advisor, Flights, Hotels, and Google+ Local search.

Matt Cutts announced the feature in a very brief post on the Google Webmaster Central blog, saying, “Webmasters can now choose this option through our Webmaster Tools, and crawled content currently being displayed on Shopping, Advisor, Flights, Hotels, or Google+ Local search pages will be removed within 30 days.”

This is obviously not a feature that Google would want a ton of people to use, because the less content that appears in these services, the less useful they are. Perhaps that’s why Cutts hasn’t tweeted about the tool (maybe not, but perhaps). At least with the short announcement, they have something they can point to.

The feature is a direct response to an investigation by the Federal Trade Commission. When Google settled with the FTC, one of the voluntary concessions Google made was a feature that would let sites opt out of Google’s specialized search engines.

As Danny Sullivan notes, the feature doesn’t let you choose which search engines you wish to opt out of. If you use the feature, you’re opting out of all of those mentioned.

On a help page, Google says, “This opt-out option currently applies only to services hosted on google.com and won’t apply to other Google domains.”

One year after rebranding itself and ditching the "Android Market" label, Google Play is celebrating the occasion by offering deals to Android users.

Google Play has grown rapidly in the last year, bringing you more content in more languages and places around the globe. In addition to offering more than 700,000 apps and games, they’ve partnered with all of the major music companies, movie studios and publishers to bring you the music, movies, TV shows, books and magazines you love. And They’ve added more ways for you to buy them, including paying through your phone bill and gift cards, which we're beginning to roll out in the U.K. this week.

Since no birthday is complete without presents, Google Play celebrating with a bunch of special offers across the store on songs, TV shows, movies and books.

As of Wednesday, the site offered: a free $15 gift card and free shipping on photo-sharing webstore, The Fancy; a free fantasy book called A Quest of Heroes by Morgan Rice; a 10% discount applicable to bookings on Hotels.com; a limited edition character of the game, Yumby Smash; 50% off the movie, Kung Fu Panda; access to a new "Mars" location on the Disney game, Gnome Village; and a variety of in-app savings for the game, Royal Revolt!

While its current offerings are not that impressive, users will have to wait and see what other deals Google Play may have in store later this week.

Google pays tribute to Miriam Makeba 'Mama Africa' with doodle

Miriam Makeba, the South African chanteuse renowned for her collaborations with Calypso king Harry Belafonte and folk legend Paul Simon on his the tours of seminal world music album Graceland in 1987, received tribute from Google in the form of a doodle on her 81st birthday.
Born in Johannesburg on March 4, 1932, Makeba gained initial fame in 1959 during a tour of the United States with South African group the Manhattan Brothers.

Makeba's was a strong voice against her home country's racist apartheid government. She ran afoul of the government in 1960 after she participated in Come Back, Africa, an anti-apartheid documentary, a year earlier.
Her subsequent exile, which lasted for nearly 30 years, did nothing to diminish her International renown though she would not return until after Nelson Mandela emerged from prison in 1990.
Five years after her exile, she would become the first woman of African heritage to have the honour of winning a Grammy Award, which she shared with Belafonte for An Evening with Belafonte/Makeba. It was the first US-produced album to feature authentic Zulu and Swahili music, a milestone in the world music genre.

With a turbulent personal life contrasting the fame she had received as Mama Africa, she was divorced four times. Her first marriage was to trumpeter Hugh Masekelaand her most controversial one was to civil rights activist/Black Panther Stokely Carmichael, which led to her moving to Guinea.
She was responsible for popularising African music in the United States. With iconic traditional flowing gowns and hairstyles, she would belt out music that was richly flavoured by her African roots and childhood Jazz influences.
In 2008, after a concert in the southern Italian town of Caserta, Makeba, the first African woman to address the United Nations (where she testified against apartheid in 1963), passed away.
