“Waktu zaman Belanda ini kantor kereta api, Mbak. Tapi yang bikin seram adalah waktu penjajahan Jepang, ruang bawah tanah dijadikan penjara,” kata Widi, pemandu wisata saya saat mengunjungi Lawang Sewu di Semarang belum lama ini.

Lawang Sewu sebenarnya sudah dikenal sejak lama, namun baru benar-benar naik daun setelah dijadikan lokasi uji nyali acara televisi beberapa tahun silam. Kini, bangunan yang terletak di dekat Tugu Muda Semarang itu menjadi objek wisata utama bagi wisatawan yang datang ke kota ini.

Seperti kata Widi, gedung dengan arsitektur benar-benar cantik ini dulunya dibangun sebagai kantor jawatan kereta api. Tepatnya pada tahun 1904, dibangunlah gedung ini untuk kantor Nederlands-Indische Spoorweg Maatschappij atau NIS dan baru selesai tiga tahun kemudian.

Lalu mengapa dinamakan Lawang Sewu (Seribu Pintu)? Kabarnya jumlah pintu sebenarnya tidak sampai seribu namun masyarakat menganggap jendela-jendela yang besar dan tinggi sebagai pintu sehingga dinamakan demikian. “Kalau dihitung semua daun pintu dan jendela, jumlahnya sekitar tiga ribu lembar,” Widi menjelaskan sambil membawa saya menuju bagian depan gedung.

Sesuai dengan peruntukkannya pada masa Belanda, di bagian depan terdapat lokomotif kereta uap yang dipamerkan. Warnanya hitam, terlihat gagah, walau sudah tidak beroperasi lagi.

Saya kemudian diajak menuju ke bagian tengah kompleks di mana terdapat sebuah pohon besar. Bagian tersebut seperti sebuah lapangan yang dikelilingi oleh bangunan-bangunan Lawang Sewu. Di bawah pohon terdapat sebuah band keroncong yang tengah memainkan lagu Bengawan Solo. “Cocok sekali dengan suasananya,” pikir saya.

Widi kemudian mengajak saya berkeliling Gedung B. Saat itu tengah ada pameran kereta api yang menyajikan gambar-gambar serta miniatur kereta api kuno. Sambil berjalan ia menjelaskan bahwa gedung tertua di Lawang Sewu masih dibangun dengan metode lama tanpa semen.

Lorong-lorong gedung lebar dengan daun pintu dan jendela yang memang banyak sekali. Saya bisa membayangkan kalau malam hari pasti terasa menyeramkan. Namun siang seperti itu, ketika pencahayaan baik dan sirkulasi udara cukup, tidak terlalu mengerikan. Apalagi dari luar terdengar riuh rendah suara pengunjung lain.

Widi lalu membawa saya menaiki tangga ulir ke lantai atas. Tangganya sempit dan sedikit memutar jadi perlu hati-hati. Di lantai atas terdapat ruangan-ruangan besar dan kosong. Lantai atas ini memiliki balkon panjang dengan pagar dinding setinggi pinggang orang dewasa. Dari sini bisa terlihat Bundaran Tugu Muda dan keramaian di sekitarnya.

Di bagian bawah terdapat sebuah parit sempit dengan air dangkal. Widi mengatakan bahwa dulunya parit tersebut adalah sungai yang cukup besar dan dalam. Dulu dikenal dengan nama Sungai Merah, merujuk pada warna darah karena sungai ini dahulu digunakan sebagai lokasi pembuangan mayat para tahanan.

Tiba saatnya kami menuju ke ruang bawah tanah yang pernah dijadikan penjara oleh Jepang pada tahun 1942. Untuk masuk ke ruang bawah tanah pengunjung diharuskan menyewa sepatu boot seharga Rp10 ribu sepasang. Ruang bawah tanah memang selalu becek dengan air setinggi mata kaki. Sejak awal, ruang bawah tanah didesain untuk dapat menyimpan air dengan fungsi mendinginkan lantai di atasnya. “Oh, jadi semacam AC alami,” kata saya.

Tangga menuju ke ruang bawah tanah juga sempit dan berulir. Ruangan ini gelap sehingga pengunjung harus membawa senter. Seperti beberapa bekas penjara lama yang pernah saya kunjungi sebelumnya, sel-sel di sini sangat sempit. Beda lho dengan penjara-penjara zaman sekarang yang biasa kita lihat di film-film seri Amerika.

Sel yang berukuran 1,5 x 1 m dulu bisa ditempati hingga enam orang tahanan. Lalu ada pula sel pendek setinggi lutut. Di sini tahanan hanya bisa jongkok atau duduk. Satu sel juga berisi banyak orang. Kejam sekali penjajah Jepang kala itu!

Tempat inilah yang dianggap seram oleh masyarakat sekitar. Maklum saja, penjara selalu jadi tempat penyiksaan dan entah berapa orang sudah mati disiksa di sini.

Kompleks Lawang Sewu sudah direnovasi, bahkan pernah ada wacana untuk menjadikannya tempat komersial dan hotel. Namun, banyak kalangan yang menentang rencana tersebut karena mengganggap proyek seperti itu akan merusak keaslian saksi sejarah ini.

Saya pribadi sebagai penikmat sejarah akan merasa sedih bila sampai bangunan bersejarah seperti ini dimodernisasi secara brutal. Perlu diingat, Lawang Sewu adalah saksi perjuangan para pendahulu republik ini. Di sinilah dulu terjadi Pertempuran Lima Hari antara Angkatan Muda Kereta Api (AMKA) melawan Kempetai dan Kidobutai Jepang.

Renovasi untuk merawat dan melestarikan bangunan bersejarah tentu wajib hukumnya, demikian juga sebagai sumber pendapatan pemerintah daerah dan masyarakat setempat. Namun, tentu tidak bila dilakukan hanya demi kepentingan bisnis semata yang hanya akan menguntungkan segelintir orang.

The first evidences of human appearance in Bali date back to the Stone Age, tens of thousands years ago, with the founding of few artifacts that are believed to be reminiscent of small bands of hunter-gatherers. These prehistoric bands lived and foraged in Baliâ€™s jungle and scavenged the tidal pools of the island. Many Paleolithic implements have been found near Sembiran in northen Bali, and there is also evidence in the form of rectangular stone adzes, axes, blades, hoes and picks used by a Neolithic people of Bali.

The most spectacular remains of Neolithic civilization in Bali are remain of Neolithic settlement and a burial site of 100 mongoloid adults and children which were found in Cekik, south of Gilimanuk, West Bali. These are the mortal remains of coastal people who swam the strait and walked across to Bali via land bridge from East Java to Bali in their migration east through the islands from Indochina. Bali was already well populated by the time of Bronze Age began around 300 B.C.

The remains of Bronze Age include clay utensils, stone mounds and bells shaped like two bowls. The people who used these items buried their dead in pottery jars or stone sarcophagi, complete with such funeral gifts as arm and foot rings, beads, highly polished stone tools, bronze and iron implements. The metal objects of Bronze Age are deeply related to the Dongson culture of Indochina. The magnum opus of this civilization is the moon of Pejeng, a glass-shaped-kettle drum made of bronze which is one of the most remarkable archeological artifacts discovered in Bali.

By the Broze Age, Bali population already practiced both wet-and dry-rice cultivation, worked the fields with stone tools and water buffalo, raised pigs and poultry, and developed a sophisticated megalithic culture which made use of menhirs, stone chairs, and stepped pyramids.

The prehistoric period came to an end when Bali established early contact with far more advanced culture of India and China, the leading powers in Far Eastern trade during first centuries A.D. the evidences of this contacts are the Bali Yatra Festival which is celebrated in Kalingga, India, to commemorate the voyage of Indiaâ€™s Hindu priests to Bali and the Chinese annals of the 5th and 6th centuries mentioned a Hinduized state called Pâ€™o Li which might have referred to Bali. The remnants of contacts with India can be seen today on the remains of hermitages and monasteries at Gunung Kawi and Goa Gajah, both in Gianyar. Balinese script is derived from the Palava script of South India.

The Indic influences had a significant influence on Bali but they did not come directly from India but through Java. This created a unique Indic-Javanese influence on the history of Bali. The first recorded significant evidence of Indic-Javanese influence was the establishment of the first kingdom in Bali. Singamandawa was the first kingdom in Bali which drew its line from Sanjaya dynasty in Java, established in the area around Mount Batur. Another kingdom with quite similar was Singadwala, which was situated near Besakih with its powerful king Sri Kesari Warmadewa which conquered the former kingdom in 966 A.D.

Bali has been inhabited for a long time. Sembiran, a village in northern Bali, was believed to have been home to the people of the Ice Age, proven by the discovery of stone axes and adzes. Further discoveries of more sophisticated stone tools, agricultural techniques and basic pottery at Cekik in Bali's far west, point to the people of the Neolithic era. At Cekik, there is evidence of a settlement together with burial sites of around a hundred people thought to be from the Neolithic through to the Bronze Age. The massive drums of the Bronze Age, together with their stone moulds have been discovered throughout the Indonesian archipelago, including the most famous and largest drum in Southeast Asia, the Moon of Pejeng, nearly two meters wide, now housed in a temple in east Ubud. In East Java and Bali, there has also been a concentration of carved stone sarcophagi, which we can see in the Bali Museum in Denpasar and Purbakala Museum in Pejeng.

Bali was busy with trade from as early as 200 BC. The prasasti, or metal inscriptions, Bali's earliest written records from the ninth century AD, show a significant Buddhist and Hindu influence; especially in the statues, bronzes and rock-cut caves around Mount Kawi and Gajah Cave. Balinese society was pretty sophisticated by about 900 AD. Their marriage portrait of the Balinese King Udayana to East Java's Princess Mahendratta is captured in a stone carving in the Pura Korah Tegipan in the Batur area. Their son, Erlangga, born around 991 AD, later succeeded to the throne of the Javanese kingdom and brought Java and Bali together until his death in 1049.
