We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.

I like a good dragon movie as much as the next girl. But what I really love is an AWESOME dragon movie. You know, with mayhem and death and revenge against bullies. All of these movies feature awesome dragon moments. They’re also movies where the dragon plays a pivotal role in the film; I left out the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings movies because the dragons are more incidental. With the opening of How to Train Your Dragon on March 26, it seems like a good time to look back on some of the best dragon-y dragons in the history of cinema.

7. Eragon (2006)

Recap: The titular character finds a dragon egg and secretly raises a dragon named Saphira. But when the evil king finds out and comes looking for Saphira, his quiet life is over and he begins planning to become a dragon rider.
Reason it is awesome: Dragon rider. Who doesn’t want to ride a dragon? Sure Eragon is a bit whiny and annoying but he is riding a dragon and that is super cool. Also, no one will ever mess with him because he has a pet dragon. Oh, you have a pit bull? Well, my pet BREATHES FIRE. That’s how arguments are won.

6. Mulan (1998)

Recap: A young woman joins the army in her father’s stead after he is conscripted despite being old and infirm. Her father sends along a helper, in the form of a small dragon, Mushu (Eddie Murphy) to protect her. He’s a family spirit guardian who has failed in the past, so … no way could that go wrong.

Reason: Mushu is the comedian of the dragon world. His looks aren’t as imposing as some of his brethren but he can still tie your shoelaces together if you piss him off. Of all the dragons listed, he would be the best to keep as a pet, mostly because he’s pretty small and would be less likely to knock over all the furniture. He’s the purse chihuahua of the dragon world. Though don’t expect him to wear pink hairbows, I doubt he’d roll with that.

5. Dragonheart (1996)

Recap: Probably the best looking film on this list in terms of special effects, Dragonheart stars Dennis Quaid as a knight who teams up with his traditional enemy, a dragon, to stop a tyrannical king.
Reason it is awesome: Because Draco is a dragon con artist! He is a dragon who wants to steal your money. He could just go in, breathing fire and being a big jerk, but no, he not only wants to scare you, he wants to make you look like a big idiot who got conned by a dragon. Draco is the Keyser Soze of dragons.

4. The Hobbit (1977)

Recap: Bilbo Baggins, a stay-at-home kind of hobbit, becomes wrapped up in intrigue when a wizard, Gandalf asks him to join a band of dwarfs in an effort to steal treasure from the dragon, Smaug.
Reason it is awesome: Smaug is a dragon’s dragon. He’s a badass who sleeps on a pile of motherf#ckin gold, people! How is that not cool? Also, though not a dragon, Gollum is pretty creepy. I don’t know if it’s that I saw this film as a kid but he’s way more disturbing than the one in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The whole thing about his “precious” kept me up at night.

3. The Neverending Story (1984)

Recap: After running away from bullies, Bastian finds refuge in an antique book store where he begins reading The Neverending Story, a book about the magical land of Fantastica. As Bastian reads about the boy warrior Atreyu, the luckdragon Falkor and the Child-like empress, he becomes drawn into the story until he realizes that he has become a part of the story.
Reason it is awesome: Have you seen this movie? Because if so you will recall that Bastian ends the film riding Falkor down the street, scaring the crap out of the same bullies that menaced him during the beginning of the film. Falkor, the only mammalian dragon on this list, also looks more fun to ride than your typical scaly, hard reptilian dragon. Plus he seems more reasonable than your run of the mill, burn-whatever-I-want dragon.

2. Pete’s Dragon (1977)

Recap: An orphan who was adopted by an abusive group of scam artists runs away and meets a drunk lighthouse keeper and his kind daughter who take him in and try to protect him. They are aided in this by Pete’s invisible friend, a dragon named Elliott.
Reason it is awesome: Pete has an invisible dragon friend. Seriously, if you could only have one friend, who wouldn’t choose a dragon? The invisibility may seem like a hindrance, but frankly Elliott is not the most terrifying dragon ever so it’s probably better that he’s invisible, that way he sounds scary. Plus they live in a lighthouse, how cool is that? Though this film isn’t afraid to teach the dangers of keeping a dragon indoors. Elliott has a tendency to knock over furniture and make a nuisance of himself; though to be fair, it’s hard to move around when you have a big ass tail behind you.

1. Reign of Fire (2002)

Recap: In the near future, a dragon wakes from deep within the earth under London and begins wreaking havoc across the country. She reproduces and soon dragons take over the world, leaving only isolated pockets of survivors. Quinn (Christian Bale) leads one such group outside of London where they live a subsistence existence, surviving as best they can until the arrival of a group of American soldiers lead by Denton Van Zan (Matthew McConaughey) come to town, ready to kill them some dragons.
Reason it is awesome: Before McConaughey exclusively played the-man-who-needs-a-woman in half the romantic comedies out there, he was the most badass, dragon-killing soldier of them all. But the beauty of the film lies not only in McConaughey’s batsh*t crazy performance, but how that performance is completely the opposite of what Bale is doing, creating a realistic portrayal of a man in a post-apocalyptic dragon society. This is akin to George C. Scott’s general from Dr. Strangelove and Bale’s own John Connor from Terminator Salvation going head to head in a movie that also happens to be full of dragons. And these dragons are the real deal, they will burn you up for no good reason. Maybe they will eat you, but more likely they will just burn everything because they are DRAGONS and THAT’S WHAT THEY DO.

There’s the Top 7, now what should be in the Top 10?

This was done by commission for Phil Velasquez, a writer who has commissioned many works from me to illustrate his stories.
Sometimes I'm really given some good ideas for work by stories that I've read. Most of all, in this painting, I wanted to show how powerful she was. He wanted the dragon to look more shocked and surprised by something, but I felt in this instance it was more important for the strength of the piece that she be graceful and powerful. I have given her an expression that captures a moment where her attention has definitely been caught suddenly by something, but I didn't hint too strongly at what, and I made her reaction more fierce than afraid.
The serpent is a very ancient and powerful symbol of feminine and masculine energy, and while some of my dragons are more cat-like, this one I wanted to be more serpentine. Feminine energy curves and swirls around rather than moving in a straight line, it gathers force with a coil, and masculine energy moves more in a straight line. Serpents do both, coiling and striking straightly, and so there is an element of masculine energy there, in balance with the feminine. The obvious phallic looking snake opens its mouth and swallows things whole, transforming its self from the convex to the concave. Serpents also appear to rejuvenate themselves as they grow by shedding their skins, thus giving them a seeming power over life, death, and transformation.
The trident is carried by Neptune who has dominion over the sea and over illusion or dreaming, and many powerful sea dwellers might use such a weapon as the trident. The trident is traditionally a symbol of knowledge and sacred power; the three tines that converge into or emerge from one shaft are reminiscent of the Holy Trinity (Maiden Mother Crone, or Father, Son, Holy Spirit). It is also very like the Nordic rune for protection; elhaz, indicating the splayed hand of protection, arms lifted up in prayer of invocation, the horns of the hart lifted up, or the swan in flight (a reference to the valkyrja).
This one I did in the painting is entwined with a coil that swirls around the shaft, and is held downward rather than upright, making it a symbol of the feminine principal.
Well then check out this leather dragon backpack made by Bob Basset of Ukraine. Bob, who if you can't tell is a dragon fanatic, made the thing entirely out of molded leather and black magic. While I can appreciate all things dragon I just have the feeling that this thing won't go over well anywhere but the annual renaissance fair (or a late night DnD session). All I know is that I used to have a real pet dragon named Firestorm and we would fly all over the world together. Until I slayed him to make the sweetest pair of assless chaps you've ever seen.

A couple more of the bag after the jump.

They live in fetid, swampy habitats. They find comfort in the sickening-sweet aroma of drowned, rotting carcasses. The black dragon's domain is the swamp and the jungle. They are abusive, quick to anger, and malevolent. Their hearts are as black as their slimy scales.

A black dragon can be identified by his grim, skeletal appearance. His eyes lie in deep sockets. His two great horns curve forward and down. The flesh of his face appears to have partially deteriorated, as if burnt by acid. Acidic slime drools from his menacing grin. He smells of rotting vegetation, foul water, and poisonous acid.

Living in sticky, wet habitats, black dragons dine mostly on fish, eels, and other water creatures. They will eat meat, but prefer to allow their victims float in ponds for days, or even weeks, before being eaten.

If you ever encounter a black dragon, be careful—he prefers surprise attacks instead of fair fighting. He is most active in the darkest hour of night, wherein the darkness he feels confident and powerful. He breathes a poisonous, sizzling acid.

Red Dragons

Red dragons are greedy and covetous, and obsessed with increasing their treasure hoards. They live in warm habitats, such as volcanoes or tropical islands. The red dragon's domain is is the mountain and the island. They are vain, cunning, and terrible.

A red dragon can be identified by is long wings and two long horns. He has a long, red, forked tongue. Tiny flames often dance in his nostrils when he is angry. His eyes gleam with unrestrained greed when he has seen treasure. He smells of smoke and sulfur.

Red dragons are fiercely territorial. They prefer to eat meat, especially people. Red dragons have been known to force villages to sacrifice maidens to them. (This is a matter of taste. As you would have it, apparently maidens "just taste better.") The best part of a meal for a red dragon is drinking the blood.

Red dragons breathe a deadly fire.

Blue Dragons

Blue dragons are pensive, lawful, and vain. They live in hot, dry areas, such as sandy deserts or arid steppes.

A blue dragon can be identified by his frilled ears and a single horn upon his head. His eyes are smooth, glossy, and without pupils-when looking at them, you may feel as though you are looking into eternity. The dry scent of ozone and sand follows a blue dragon wherever he goes.

He loves to soar in the hot desert air. He is a dedicated carnivour who will eat snakes, lizards, and occasionally even desert plants, but truly prefers herd animals such as camels. Blue dragons are a real threat to caravans crossing the desert. He prefers to attack people in ambush. Surprise and distance is his greatest ally. They enjoy sitting and reflecting. He is blue-blooded (that is to say, cold, effete, or noble.) He is lawful and has some sense of morals.

He is good at tracking.

The blue dragon is large and vibrant.

Blue dragons breathe lightning, that is, a lightning bolt.

Green Dragons

The green dragon is a belligerent creature and master of intrigue, politics, and backbiting. He is cruel. He prefers forests—the older and bigger the trees, the better. Instead of being overtly aggressive, he prefers to concoct elaborat schemes to gain power or wealth with as little effort as possible. He may make his lair behind a waterfall or near a lake, pond, or stream that provides a submerged entrance. The closer one gets to his lair, the darker the woods become. Evil hangs in the air, mingling with the forest scents to produce foul odors.

The green dragon's head is covered in hornlets. He has a long neck and legs, and resembles a brontosaurus.

The green dragon reaks of chlorine.

The green dragon is a liar and master of verbal evasion. Just talking to a green dragon can lead to ruin. When attacking, he will usually stalk his prey first, sometimes for days. The green dragon has a palette for elf flesh. He loves to play with his prey. He will subside on practically anything, including shrubs and small trees. He uses camoflauge to his advantage. He is obsessed with life and growth, and wants to live eternally. He is envious.

He is good at tracking.

The green dragon likes to instill terror in lesser opponents before torturing them to death.

Green dragons breathe poisonous gas, that is, a toxic chlorine gas.

White Dragons

White dragons are small and intelligent. They live in frigid, icy climates — usually arctic areas, but sometimes very high mountains. They travel alone, and have very good memories. They prefer the solitude of snowy plains and caves, far away from the warming rays of the sun.

A white dragon can be identified by his sharp, intelligent-looking eyes and intense expression. His scales resemble fur, or even feathers, in places. His wide feet and sharp claws help him to walk atop snowbanks. An aura of coldness seems to eminate from the white dragon.

Living in frosty climes, white dragons prefer their food to be suitably chilled. If their victims have not frozen to death already, white dragons will often pack them away in the snow until they are properly frozen.

If you ever encounter a white dragon, be on your guard— he is swift and alert. Your best bet is to scare or intimidate him, as white dragons are sometimes known to be cowardly. He breathes a chilling frost.

Here, these sections describe particular things used throughout the site; it is recommended that you read all articles here before reading other sections.
Dragon Colors
"The following are some of the colors that dragons have been drawn or written in as. Note that all the information here is stereotypical and is based on what the vast majority of author's and painter's ideas of the color. So, this is not an all-encompassing color chart."

Dragon Comparisons
"Over time, I have noticed a strange connection between famous dragons of one mythology and that of another. Here I plan to compare them for further theories and research."

Modern Dragons
"Many have asked me, 'What are anthropomorphic dragons?' and the like. They also ask my why this 'dragon type' is not in the dragon types section. While I admit, it could be, I do not feel they fit well in here. This page will be completely dedicated to the modernization of dragons, and how they have changed."

Myth, Legend, and Folklore
"What's the difference between myth, legend, and folklore? Sometimes, people confuse these three different terms for tales of the past. Here, I'd like to clarify the three story types."

Origin of Dragon Myths
"It would be entirely unfair to say that there is one true origin of dragon myths. Given the shear amount of stories told about dragons, it is impossible to pin point that one root from which those dragons grew. Of course, this is because not all dragon myths share the same origin. Here, some theories and beliefs on dragon myths will be explored."

Origin of the Word "Dragon"
"The word that translates from some languages to the word 'dragon' in English don't necessarily mean the same thing. In some languages, such as Greek, the word refers to serpents. Here, the origin of the word 'dragon', and it's meaning in other languages is reviewed."

Religion and Dragons
"Religions have had a big impact upon dragons and dragons have had a big impact upon religion. Why is it that I have to mention this? Well, in order to understand people's view of dragons, people must understand the people's view of other things...their culture."

Sea Monsters
"Sea Monsters are related to Sea Dragons and Sea Serpents, but how did they come about?"

Why is it a dragon?
"I am sure many people are confused as to why two things like a wurm and a western dragon can be classified into one big race known as 'dragon'. I am here to try to xplain how we know that it is a dragon."

SNAKES, SERPENTS, DRAGONS
AND THUNDERBIRDS

The dragon evolved from the serpent as an icon of the elders and spiritual teachers of the Earth Mother religion. This was the symbol of the druids, vates and bards. In Native American traditions, clans of the Holy Men were often called the Snake clan. In Ireland, the dragon was less stylized and retained the appearance of a snake or serpent. Fire breathing dragons in particular have been source for numerous folk tales. Sadly we must report that the tales of Dragon slayers are little more than disguised stories that relate directly to the murders of Druids, priests and dedicated followers of the Earth Mother religion. Today we call this genocide, but under the authority of the time, it was an accepted practice to eliminate competetive philosophies. The direct relationship of fire and an obviously reptillian animal ties together two items of importance with an ancient origin. Fire and the ability to make fire were considered gifts to the wise. Anyone who could construct a fire was gifted with a special knowledge. Simultaneous within this era was a true and honest fascination of animals that reproduced by laying eggs. Humans have long witnessed the births of mammals and knew about impregnation, gestation and live birth from several hundred millennia of observation and notation. Mankind was well aware of its mammilian origins long before the word appeared in language.

Birds were held in very high regard because of the ability to fly which was assumed to be an ability to commune with the Sky Father, or the Creator. Birds, lizards, turtles and snakes are all egg layers with very few exceptions. All these animals were held in very special reverence. This fact has excaped notice of modern scholars and has received little or no attention.

The primary Celtic diety, Lugh, had shrines and monuments throughout Europe prior to Roman times. Little reference material is available. As a competitive religion, resource material has been culled from the records by Christian authorities. As a theocratic government, it directed the destruction of physical existence. It is reported by some Celtic scholars that his images were often accompanied by a cock, a turtle and a ram. Two of the three are egg layers and the third is an icon of the era, Aries; the Ram.

What demonstrates this line of thought clearly is examination of an image constructed to represent a dragon. More often than not, it is drawn as a large reptile with wings. We accept the wings without question, but to the ancients this was important. Wings indicated an ability to fly. The sky was understood to be the realm of the Sky Father or Creator. Any animal that could fly was deemed able to commune with this spirit. This is why Angels, Harpies, Griffons, Spinxes and Pegasus all have wings. This philosophy is also why flying carpets exist in Arab legend and mythology. All promote the idea that flight and a special communion with sky spirits, a supernatural power, coexist. An example of this fascination exists in the translation of the Phaistos Disk where the fate of an individual was determined by the behavior of a flock of flying birds.

The North American Native tradition of the Thunderbird fits into this scheme as well. Consider what event is precedent to thunder. If you came up with lightning, a brilliant flash of light you are correct. Lightning was equated into fire of the brightest kind, or true enlightenment. This in turn, worked out to be wisdom. Anyone who could speak with a "voice of Thunder" was not speaking loudly. He was speaking with the gifts of the enlightened. The Thunderbird was their substitute for the fire breathing dragon.

One rock art researcher came up with the fact that the elders referred to some snake figures as lightning snakes. He wrongly assumed this had to do with a rain dance ceremony or prayers for rain. When the icons are examined with knowledge and application of proper metaphor, they too, work out to be of the same genera as dragons.

For the most part, this discussion has dealt with items from European and North American origin. It must be noted that the Asian dragon exists with remarkably similar features to the European icon. Missing are the destructive aspects of mythology. In Asia, the dragon has not been subject to the derogatory Christian reworking of the icon and retains the feature of an item related to good rather than evil. Mexican dragons exist as well, but I lack the database to properly deal with them. Perhaps some readers will enlighten us.
Renji Abarai (阿散井 恋次, Abarai Renji) begins his Soul Reaper career in the 5th Division, but is transferred into the 11th Division and eventually moves to the 6th to become Byakuya Kuchiki's lieutenant.

Renji has long flowing crimson hair, usually kept in a high ponytail, and his entire upper body is covered in tribal tattoo work. As far as his personality goes, Renji is about as eccentric as any other Soul Reaper. He varies from smug and cocky in his first appearances to downright angsty and depressed after his major defeats, but shows himself to be an incredibly serious and determined fighter when confronted with an actual challenge. Willing to fight, kill, and die for whatever he believes in, Renji is a dangerous man to those who stand in his way. He's also the only Vice Captain who has achieved bankai. Many Bleach fans speculated that he's the most powerful Vice Captain and non-captain position in the Soul Society. He is similar to Ichigo Kurosaki in many aspects, and the two are mistaken for brothers in the anime's Bount arc. Ichigo claims they are cousins to keep things simple, allowing many hilarious situations to occur later, including comments over their unusually colored hair. A continuing gag in the series is Renji's nick name, red pineapple, referring to his crimson hair kept in a pineapple top-like ponytail. During a filler arc before the invasion of Las Noches, Renji wears a shirt with 'Red Pineapple' printed on the front, supposedly bought by Ichigo Kurosaki as a joke. He's even referred as "Aka Pine" during the Shinigami Cup segments.
Zabimaru is a nue (a baboon with a snake tail), hence his name. Zabimaru's spirit is portrayed as battle-loving and proud, similar in personality to Renji. Both the snake and baboon are capable of speaking, though the baboon is usually the more dominant one. They also have a type of human form, where the baboon is a large breasted woman, and the snake is a young kid. Both are connected by a chain from the child's collar to the woman's waist, though their relation is shaky at best.
Zabimaru's shikai command is "Roar" (咆えろ, hoero), or "howl" in other English translations. In such state, it transforms into a segmented blade with a pick-like protrusion on each segment. The segments are connected by a stretchable thread, making Zabimaru more useful as a whip than an actual sword. While Zabimaru can be stretched to incredible lengths in its whip form, Renji has a limit of three consecutive attacks before having to bring the segments of Zabimaru back together for recovery. Renji can also use his spiritual power to separate the segments and surround an opponent with them, allowing him to execute a one-shot omnidirectional attack called higa zekkō (狒牙絶咬, "bite of a baboon's broken fang").

Hihiō Zabimaru.

Zabimaru's bankai is Hihiō Zabimaru (狒狒王蛇尾丸, "baboon king snake tail") and transforms Zabimaru into a massive version of its shikai form resembling a skeletal snake. Unlike its shikai, Zabimaru's segments are held together by Renji's spiritual power, allowing him to separate and reattach them at will. Even if a segment is damaged, Renji can simply detach it and reform Zabimaru. Zabimaru itself, in bankai form, does not literally "cut", Renji usually catches his opponent with the snake-head of his weapon and smashes his opponent into the ground with it. Zabimaru also gains a special technique known as hikōtsu taihō (狒骨大砲, "baboon bone cannon") after Renji becomes more adept with using his bankai. The technique fires a dense blast of spiritual energy from Zabimaru's mouth. He can also use a much more powerful higa zekkō, where all the segments detach and sharpen using spiritual energy.

Tōshirō Hitsugaya (日番谷 冬獅郎, Hitsugaya Tōshirō) is the captain of the 10th Division and the youngest captain in the history of Soul Society.

A child prodigy, Hitsugaya is the youngest death god to become a captain in a very long time. While the youngest by a considerable amount, he is actually one of the more mature captains. His youthful appearance belie his intellect and perception. Unfortunately, he does not always receive the respect fitting of his position. This is most obvious in Hinamori Momo, his childhood friend and closest companion. She is his only weakness and as such, is usually targeted by his enemies, such as Ichimaru Gin and Aizen Sousuke.

He does not have as much experience as the other captains and as such, is not as composed as some. Most of the time he is able to think clearly and control his emotions, but in certain situations (if Hinamori is injured), he will lose control. Since he is not fully developed, his power is still not at its peak. One of his opponents, Shawlong Qu Fong (an arrancar), stated that, due to his youth, Hitsugaya'sBankai is incomplete.

His zanpaku-to, Hyourinmaru, is the strongest ice/water type in all of Soul Society. Its shikai is a large ice dragon, capable of controlling the weather and freezing any surrounding water, including the water in the air. HisBankai grants him large wings of ice that allow him to fly. There is what appears to be a dragon tail attached to them. An ice dragon surrounds the arm gripping the blade, whose guard has changed into an eight pointed star. Behind him are what appear to be three four pointed "flowers." It is rumored that these symbolize the time limit hisbankai has. Supposedly, when the all disappear, he becomes vulnerable and is no longer able to suppress all the injuries he has sustained with ice.

Hyōrinmaru's shikai.

Hitsugaya's zanpakutō is Hyōrinmaru (氷輪丸, literally "ice wheel", idiomatically "full moon"). Hyōrinmaru's shikai command is "sit upon the frosted heavens" (霜天に坐せ, sōten ni zase, literally "reign over the frozen heavens"). Hyōrinmaru is the strongest of all ice element zanpakutō in Soul Society. Hyōrinmaru's spirit is a winged Chinese dragon made of ice, while in the Zanpakutō Unknown Tales anime arc it takes the form of a amnesic man with long green hair and a blue x-shaped scar on his face, being calm and quiet most of the time. Hyōrinmaru allows Hitsugaya to control water and ice. The slashes created by Hyōrinmaru gives off an immense amount of spirit power which overflows from the tip of the blade, creating a flow of ice vaguely shaped like Hyōrinmaru's dragon spirit. The dragon flies at opponents and instantly freezes anything it touches. The chain-blade also freezes anything Hitsugaya traps with it.

Hyōrinmaru's bankai.

Hyōrinmaru's bankai, named Daiguren Hyōrinmaru (大紅蓮氷輪丸, literally "great crimson lotus ice wheel"), causes ice to flow from Hyōrinmaru onto Hitsugaya, forming into two large wings, a tail, guards over his feet in the shape of dragon claws, and twelve large flower petals. During one of Hitsugaya's earlier battles, the arrancar Shawlong speculates that Hitsugaya's bankai will fade when all twelve petals disappear and that Hitsugaya's bankai is incomplete due to his young age. Later during his fight with Luppi, Hitsugaya states that "even if [Hyōrinmaru is] shattered, it will reform as long as there is water present.

Hyōrinmaru's bankai has four known special techniques. The first is Ryūsenka (竜霰花, literally "dragon hail flower"), which freezes any enemy Hitsugaya stabs, locking them into a cocoon of ice and freezing them to the core. Once frozen, Hitsugaya can shatter his opponent. The second is Sennen Hyōrō (千年氷牢, literally "thousand-year ice prison"), which forms a multitude of ice pillars using the moisture in the atmosphere. These pillars hold the enemy prisoner for a thousand years, also freezing them. His third technique, Guncho Tsurara (literally "icicle flock"), he launches a multitude of ice shards in an attempt to impale his opponent. His fourth, and implied most powerful move is called Hyoten Hyakkaso (literally "frozen sky-hundred flowers funeral"). This attack causes 100 snow flakes to fall from the sky, freezing anything they touch in a flower like shape. When all 100 flakes fall, the life of the one trapped by the attack is over.
