What we were not aware of is the state of NCDOT charges $17,000 for each sign.
This information came to us first hand by way of a conversation with a winery owner.
We wanted to inform all of you so that you may appreciate the additional costs the owners face to get out their message to all of us who enjoy their wine.

Centuries-old N.C. 'Mother Vine' is ailing

The nation's oldest cultivated grapevine is expected to survive being sprayed with herbicides.
Why The Weekend Winers?-Dale

My wife and I were avid travelers particularly the back roads of our fine county. Twice we traveled across the county where our journeys took us to all the places off the beaten paths. Being wine drinkers we combined our love for back road travels and wine to start visiting NC and VA wineries on weekends thus, The Weekend Winers.

After visiting several great wineries I noticed that except for a state organization and winery websites everyone was talking about the wine. Certainly wine is an excellent subject, but very subjective since taste is a personal choice. No one seemed to be interested in the journey, the stories about the wineries and the people behind them. What each vineyard offered in the way of ambience, amenities, food, entertainment, or outdoor environments. Unless a winery advertised in some local paper or ad based magazine no one was telling the story from an outsider’s perspective; I decided then to create Byway and Vine, a Grape Adventure. Knowing that I could not do it alone with my wife involved in her business and job; I enlisted the aid of a friend and professional journalist Jay Rickerts from the WFMY Morning Show and the rest is history.

In closing when we ask for your comments, stories, adventures and experiences we are sincere in our requests. Not only is our website/Wine Travelog not about the wine it is also not about us, but about you. It is about how collectively we can all aid in delivering updated and interesting information about the wineries so that your journeys are truly more enjoyable and fun.

Thank you for visiting our website and Wine Travelog

and if you believe that, we’ve got a great bridge to sell you in Brooklyn.

Like it says on the masthead, “It’s not about the wine, it’s about the experience”. Jay does have a few friends who really do know their wines. They’ve offered to teach him a thing or two, but he’d rather just have a good time getting to know the road less traveled and the barstool less used.

Jay spent 30 years in TV newsrooms around the country as an anchor and reporter, and at one time helped build a whole news operation from the ground up exclusively for the Internet. Today, he’s a media relations / crisis consultant teaching executives and spokespeople how to make sure their on-screen time is well used. In his off hours, he’s a passionate amateur astronomer.
Married to his lifelong inspiration and facing the upcoming prospect of three kids in college at the same time, the call of the Winer-way was the siren’s song. An Oklahoman by birth, Jay learned the way of the Winer by way of the café. Grandparents Joy and Wanda McClanahan often employed him to peel onions and bus tables at Joy’s Grill on Main Street in Healdton, Oklahoma during those blistering 1970’s oilpatch summers. It was there he was immersed in the art of refilling a cup o’ Joe, flipping a burger and appreciating the art of easy conversation with the regulars. If a customer wasn’t already a regular, Joy and Wanda made sure they felt like one. Lesson learned.

With that in mind, Jay considers the mission of the Winer one of conversation, camaraderie and discovery. Surely every back road has something to offer, right? But hold the onions please.
