The Bridge of the Golden Wood is a lovely retelling of a folk tale about earning a living. The illustrations are beautiful and the simple story of a boy taking the advice of an old woman and clearing a log to enable fish to eat demonstrates how helping others can result in a treasure. I love the simplicity of this story. I gave this four stars because of the visibility of the words on the page.

What a lesson in frugality! I loved the way every time the coat wore out the phrase was repeated, He snipped and he clipped--and he stitched and he sewed... In our throwaway society today, this is an excellent lesson for children to see that just because something is worn doesn't mean they can't use their imaginations and make it something else. Wonderful book and illustrations.

This is a terrific book for parents and kids to read every night during the month of December. Each day there is a little story about the goings-on at the North Pole as Christmas draws near. Some days Santa is making cookies, some days making toys. He is also checking out those naughty and nice lists, but no fear. There are so many good boys and girls this year! This is the kind of book that will come out year after year on the first of December.

You not only enjoy looking at the terrific illustrations in this book you actually hear Pop Pop and his grandson cooking a lemon cake. Pish, peel, glop, twinkle! There are so many words little ones will love hearing and the grandparent/grandchild love between the two characters is adorable. Great book to read and to use making lemon cake with kids.

This is an especially good book for preschoolers who are dealing with the life experiences of having a new baby join the family. In the But I Wanted a Baby Sister Sophie wanted a sister but had to deal with having a baby brother. As the story progresses she realizes baby sisters can be annoying too and finds the joy in having a brother. One of the things that attracted me to this book was the illustrations. They are very suitable for reading aloud to one child or a classroom.

Middle kids! This book was written for you. Nobody pays much attention to Cliffy, the middle child of five, but he knows what he likes. He announces to the world it is Jammie Day and because all the characters know they really haven't been paying attention to him, let him go to school in pajamas. The illustrations are well done and the book is fun for kids who will love it that Cliffy gets away with Jammie Day, Week and even month. I also like that the publisher took the extra steps to show grade range and where it falls in Common Core.

Shelter is a wonderful book showing how important it is to be kind to others. This beautifully illustrated tale tells the story of animals preparing for a big storm and then when someone in need knocks on their doors they turn them away. When the fox den caves in, they seek shelter from the same bears they turned away and find them welcoming. Great picture book!

This is a funny version of the original Cinderella story set to modern day thinking. Just because she's stuck in a dead-end job doesn't mean she needs to pin all her hopes on landing a prince. The illustrations reflect artwork from current cartoons and would be appealing to a young reader. I especially liked the ending of this one. You go girl!

This simple story deals with stealing and helps parents strategize on the best way to handle the situation. It is written by two therapists who deal with childhood behavior and comes with a few pages of parent training at the end of the book. This would be a great family or classroom book to have on hand when the situation presents itself.

Tessie is a little girl who cannot stop talking! Whether she's interrupting her family or her entire class she has to always dominate the conversation. One of the things I loved about this book was that Tessie's interrupting words were large on the page and all of the other characters spoke in a much smaller font. It showed how much someone who is loud and talkative takes over the airtime in a room. Tessie does tame her tongue through strategies given to her by her teachers and even recognizes the bad habit in another child. There are instructional pages at the end of the book to help parents and teachers work with talkative children. Fun to read and very useful in the classroom or at home.

Magic Words is a modern translation (1965) of a very old Inuit creation story by nationally known poet Edward Field. As a poem it captures beautifully the intimate relationship this Arctic people have with their natural world.

Magic Words describes a world where humans and animals share bodies and languages, where the world of the imagination mixes easily with the physical. It began as a story that told how the Inuit people came to be and became a legend passed from generation to generation. In translation, it grew from myth to poem. The text comes from expedition notes recorded by Danish explorer Knud Rasmussen in 1921. Edward Field got a copy from the Harvard Library and translated it into English.

The Inuit people, whom I had previously thought of as Eskimos, became a reality to me in the 1960s when I was asked to create a book of poems out of the notebooks of the Danish explorer Knud Rasmussen’s expeditions to this remarkable people living north of the Arctic Circle. From his observations and jottings, much of it transcribed verbatim from Inuit people themselves, I selected passages that had the mark of traditional retellings of Inuit history and cosmology – and when I spotted the lines in Rasmussen’s rough translation that became “Magic Words,” I knew that this poem came from the soul of the Inuit people. In fact, “Magic Words” became my most successful Inuit translation, one that has met with a wide response for the lost, and extraordinary, truth it reveals. The artist Mike Blanc has here beautifully captured in his illustrations the pure spirit, the essence, of Inuit art to illuminate this gem of Inuit wisdom for our children, who more than anyone are responsive to the magical power of words and images. I can only congratulate Vanita Oelschlager for bringing this beautiful edition of the ancient Inuit poem I had the honor to discover and translate to the children and to their parents who will read it to them.- Edward Field

This beautiful book takes an old Inuit creation myth and brings it to life. Teaching about other cultures is so important and Magic Words gives kids a look into an ancient Inuit poem and the artwork of this part of the world. This book would work with a class or a parent/child reading time. It is easy to understand, look at and would be a great source of discussion for little ones. Great!

This book is incredibly interactive and a wonderful to read along with your child. They don't just sit there and listen but roar along with the monsters. If they start to get scared they are gently told they can slam the book shut. The illustrations are suitably monster-creepy and this book is funny! Kids will love it.

When Will Fall Arrive is a great little story about two friends who love spending time together. When the hedgehog informs his friend bunny he will be hibernating in the fall and winter, the bunny tries to collect every incoming leaf to stop the hibernation process. Little ones with friends coming and going would find comfort in the resolution of this story as well as enjoy the beautiful fall illustrations. This would be a great book for a preschool classroom or a preschooler at home.

I wish there were more picture books like this one out there! Clothing construction is becoming a lost art for young people but A Pattern for Pepper helps a young girl pick a material pattern for a new dress to wear to tea with her grandmother. It playfully illustrates fabrics like herringbone, tartan plaid and dotted swiss giving just a little history about each fabric Pepper observes. After she picks the pattern the author shows the process of using a sewing pattern to create the dress. Great book to encourage textile arts or just for fun!

I absolutely love this book. It is as much fun to read aloud as it is to listen to. Farmer Brown has a problem when the cows find an old typewriter in the barn and make out a list of demands. The illustrations are great and the story is hilarious. I would recommend this book for toddlers through kindergarten.

Birds of a Feather introduces children to the magic of idioms - words that separately have one meaning, but together take on something entirely different.
Birds of a Feather introduces idioms with outlandish illustrations of what the words describe literally. The reader then has to guess the "real" meaning of the phrases (which is upside down in the corner of each spread). This is a wonderful book helping young children to understand idioms. The illustrations are comical but at the bottom of each picture is an explanation of what the phrase really means. Birds of a Feather would also be excellent for children or adults with developmental delays and ESL students. This should be on the shelf of every special education classroom!

I usually like to keep this section all free printables and ideas but I couldn't find even a free idiom coloring page! So, these items are not expensive, but not free.

My First Book of Soccer is a funny, fact-filled picture about the rules of soccer. It explains different types of players and plays using real photographs and funny comments that keep the book enjoyable. This would be useful to beginning soccer players from preschool to fourth or fifth grade. Even bigger kids would enjoy this and it makes understanding the game very easy. Great way to teach about a sport!

What an adorable story and one that will be asked for time and time again. The illustrations are so detailed that a child will want to take this one to bed to "read" by themselves. Sir Muffin Muffinsson watches over the sleeping child and takes care of bad dreams, that is until he finds he must deal with seven little dustrats who are messing up the house. Of course, while the cat's away the dreams will play. Great book!
