Parkinson’s Disease
While glutathione is useful for virtually any disease or health challenge, it is particularly useful for debilitating neurological diseases like Parkinson’s disease (PD). There are studies using intravenous (IV) glutathione that demonstrate its ability to improve Parkinson’s symptoms. People with this chronic progressive neurological disorder have high levels of oxidative stress and premature cellular die off in a part of the brain called the substantia nigra. Another hallmark of PD is the loss of the brain’s ability to make dopamine. While more studies are needed to further determine the ways in which glutathione helps PD, we have some solid medical theories, the premise of which continues to be borne out as research progresses.
We know that glutathione reduces specific free radical activity that interferes with the proper levels of both dopamine and acetylcholine, which is believed to be the neurochemical imbalance underlying Parkinson’s disease (PD).
As early as 1996, a study entitled “Reduced intravenous glutathione in the treatment of early Parkinson’s disease” found that the progression of PD was reduced, and symptoms improved by 42% after only 30 days of treatment. However, the practice of using glutathione for PD was not widespread, because it had to be administered directly into the veins (IV), necessitating clinic visits and medical staff inserting needles for proper administration.
In another 2009 study, Dr. David Perlmutter, a neurologist at The Perlmutter Health Center, oversaw a human pilot study on the use of IV glutathione for PD, the results of which he published in Movement Disorders. The researchers reported significant improvement during one month of glutathione treatment. When the treatments stopped, the symptoms worsened again. Dr. Perlmutter’s group stated that glutathione was safe and well tolerated.
Research on using therapeutic glutathione is incredibly encouraging for this incurable neurological disease. The stumbling block has always been that it has to be given IV, in a clinic licensed for administration of intravenous drugs, in order to be effective. There are not many clinics nationwide offering this service, and it is very expensive. It is truly a medical break-through to be able to provide this glutathione in an oral form that is still absorbed in its most effective form, without the need for needles, clinics, and huge amounts of medical bills.
Cancer
Cancer is a disease of improper cellular replication. Cell DNA is damaged and the cell’s offspring no longer die on schedule. Oddly, when our body makes immortal cells, our own mortality is in danger. This is the origin of cancer. The immune system destroys cancer cells because it detects this abnormality. However, when too many cancer cells are created, and/or our immune system cannot keep up, we end up with cancer. Not all cancer is the same – there are a myriad of causes and it can affect each person in a highly differentiated manner.
One commonality, however, is that glutathione is useful for the prevention of all cancers via a variety of mechanisms. By protecting the DNA even from the harshest free radicals, our blueprints remain undamaged and less likely to become cancerous cells. And by promoting rapid and effective detoxification, glutathione greatly reduces our overall cellular exposure to toxins, many of which are known carcinogens.
Researchers have explored how glutathione may be useful during cancer treatment as well. In a 2008 study in Japan, doctors found that using IV glutathione dramatically reduced nerve damage in patients being treated with certain kinds of chemotherapy that cause neurotoxicity.
Because glutathione is so crucial to detoxification and immune system vigor, many integrative practitioners use glutathione as part of their clinical protocols for a wide variety of cancers.
Lyme Disease
Many health issues are made even more challenging by the burden of free radicals. Consider the tick-borne Lyme disease, caused by the Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria, which sometimes manifests itself in “bullseye” pattern skin lesions, but can later progress to muscle dysfunction, arthritis, facial palsy, and more. The body’s glutathione levels are depleted in an effort to reduce the damage and spread of the disease.
However, antibiotic treatment doesn’t address the need for the body to help heal itself. In fact, Polish researchers found that patients using antibiotics to treat the skin lesion phase of the disease still had heavy free-radical activity. Even though antibiotics in this case are standard medical procedure, the resulting oxidative damage weakens the system.
This is why glutathione, because it replenishes the body’s own levels, has become a standard practice in the integrative treatment of Lyme disease. I believe it is good practice to bolster your glutathione ratio with an oral form anytime you are going to spend extended time outdoors, or if you live in a particularly tick-heavy environment during the spring, summer, and fall months. If you already have Lyme disease, an oral form should help reduce recurring flare-ups.
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Serbian researchers examined the relationship between oxidative stress, free-radical activity, and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Even though patients with RA showed higher plasma levels of superoxide dismutase (another of the body’s “super antioxidants”), they also had high levels of pro-oxidants, and increased nitric oxide, an inflammatory marker. Other research with RA patients in Italy showed a strong correlation between inflammation, oxidative stress, and lowered glutathione levels in the bloodstream. In fact, a clinical study in Jordan found that patients with RA showed a 50% depletion of reduced glutathione compared to healthy controls. The researchers concluded that “defense mechanisms against reactive oxygen species are impaired in RA.” To me, this sounds like a strong reason for anyone with RA to add active glutathione to their daily regimen.
Since rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease – meaning the body is working against itself – many of the treatment options can seem limited to pain reduction, rather than helping the body get its immune balance back in shape. However, many current studies examining the relationship between RA, oxidative stress, and inflammation seem to share the conclusion that getting those factors under control is critical to stopping the arterial stiffness and damage of the disease.

Alzheimer’s DiseaseVirtually all neurological diseases have some level of oxidative damage as a root cause or major contributor to dysfunction. Therefore, it is not surprising that Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) have been the focus of much glutathione research.
A recent study entitled “Elevation of glutathione as a therapeutic strategy in Alzheimer’s disease” concludes: “Increasing glutathione remains a promising therapeutic strategy to slow or prevent MCI and Alzheimer’s disease.” Considering that glutathione levels continue to decline as we age, and that both AD and MCI increase with age, supplementation with effective glutathione can play an important role in prevention, or slowing the progression of this disease.
Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)
One hallmark of HIV is the inability of the immune system to function properly. People with HIV often develop infections that can become life-threatening, and one such infection is tuberculosis. Researchers extracted immune system cells from people with HIV to see how well these cells would control the mycobacterium that causes tuberculosis. They found that the infection itself caused a depletion in glutathione, and that the immune cells, in turn, could not control the mycobacteria. By boosting the body’s levels of active glutathione, the cells could once again control the mycobacteria. The researchers theorized that glutathione depletion may play at least a partial causative role in reduced immune response in people with HIV, and that increasing systemic glutathione could improve immune system function in this group.

Vitamin B:
Vitamin B’s are a complicated bunch. There are eight well-known vitamin B’s in this group of water soluble vitamins that play a role in cell metabolism and support various bodily processes. I’d like to describe each of them to you in detail, but it would take up a lot of space. If you want to learn more about each, take it slow and push through.
B1 is called thiamine, and is found in foods like yeast and pork. Thiamine helps to manage stress and irritability, as well as supports systems like the cardiovascular and nervous system.* A deficiency in thiamine can cause confusion, muscle spasms, nervousness, and appetite loss. *
B2 is named riboflavin. It’s easily absorbed and a key nutrient for overall health, supporting cardiovascular health and cellular energy.* Riboflavin is a necessary cofactor for the production of energy from fats, carbs, and proteins. A deficiency can cause iron-deficiency anemia and photophobia.*
B3, or niacin, is commonly known for its use in popular energy drinks. Niacinamide (one form of B3) supports proper circulation and cardiovascular health, as well as normal energy levels and normal cognitive functions.* Deficiency can occur in areas where corn is a highly-consumed product, and can result in fatigue, anxiety, depression, digestive disturbances and slowed metabolism.*
B5, known as pantothenic acid, plays a role in the production of the adrenal hormones and is required by all cells. It may also be helpful in managing irregular moods and stress.* The major food source of pantothenic acid is meats, but human muscles generally contain twice as much B5 as animal muscles. B6 is called pyridoxine, but is more commonly referred to as B6. It is necessary for more than one hundred enzymatic reactions within the body, and is required for normal brain and nerve functions, as well as proper fat and cholesterol metabolism. Pretty important stuff, right? *
B7, or biotin, is often a stand-alone supplement. It supports healthy nerve tissue and aids in cell growth and in fatty acid metabolism, as well as metabolism of cholesterol.* Many people associate biotin with healthy skin, hair and nails. Deficiency is generally mild, and can include symptoms like conjunctivitis or dermatitis around the eyes. *
B9 is better known as folic acid. Its natural form in the body is called folate. Adequate folate intake is necessary to embryonic development, meaning that many pregnant women do choose to supplement with a folic acid formula. Folic acid supports energy production, protein metabolism and RNA and DNA repair. *
B12, or cobalamin, plays a key part in supporting nervous system function. It is needed for the formation of red blood cells that help increase capillary blood flow. It is also necessary for the maintenance of the fatty sheaths that cover and protect our nerve endings. *

It is amazing to watch and listen to this deceptive and misleading information being transmitted to the masses. An estimated six billion dollars were spent on pharmaceutical drug TV ads last year.

Why? Because the ads work by desensitization, in spite of the litany of side-effects (even death!) listed at the end of each ad. “Statin” drugs themselves are hepatotoxic and regular blood testing for elevated liver enzymes must be performed.

The “statin” drug class causes birth defects,
Headache -- in up to 16.7 percent of people
Infections -- up to 10.3 percent
Muscle pain -- up to 5.6 percent
Diarrhea -- up to 5.3 percent
Joint pain -- up to 5.1 percent
Sinusitis -- up to 6.4 percent

“Statin” drugs are being promoted to reduce LDL cholesterol levels because elevated LDL cholesterol has statistically been associated with a higher rate of cardiovascular deaths. However, a statistical association does not prove “cause and effect”. It makes no more sense to say that the firemen found fighting a fire are, in fact, the cause of the fire.

Within the cell membrane, cholesterol functions in intracellular transport, cell signaling and nerve conduction. Cholesterol is essential for the structure and function of the cell membrane. The role of cholesterol in endocytosis is critical. Recently, cholesterol has also been implicated in cell signaling processes, assisting in the formation of lipid rafts in the plasma membrane. In many neurons a myelin sheath, rich in cholesterol, provides insulation for more efficient conduction of impulses. ⁽²⁾

Within cells, cholesterol is the precursor molecule in several biochemical pathways. In the liver, cholesterol is converted to bile, which is then stored in the gallbladder. Bile contains bile salts, which solubilize fats in the digestive tract and aid in the intestinal absorption of fat molecules as well as the fat soluble vitamins, Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Vitamin E and Vitamin K. Cholesterol is an important precursor molecule for the synthesis of Vitamin D and the steroid hormones, including the adrenal gland hormones cortisol and aldosterone as well as the sex hormones progesterone, estrogens, and testosterone and their derivatives. ⁽²⁾

The side effects of statin drugs correlate exactly to their known mechanisms of action. One of the most important side-effects is the interference with the production of Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10). ⁽⁶⁾
CoQ10is the naturally-occurring form of ubiquinone in humans. Ubiquinone is widely recognized as an essential component of energy metabolism in the electron-transfer system in mitochondrial membranes. At physiological concentrations it is also recognized as an effective lipid-soluble antioxidant. It is one of the end products of the mevalonate pathway where dolichol and cholesterol are synthesized. Both ubiqionone and dolichol are released by the liver cells into the blood circulation, but in much lower concentrations than that of cholesterol. ^{(2, 7, 8)}
Ghirlanda et al reported in a double-blind, placebo-controlled study a decrease of 50-54% of CoQ10 levels in the statin treatment groups, and similar results were reproduced by Watts et al. ^{(7, 8)}

Bliznakov and Wilkins reviewed studies of the effect of statins on the biosynthesis of CoQ10 and the clinical implication of CoQ10 deficiency. The authors report that lovastatin, pravastatin and simvastatin lower the endogenous levels of CoQ10. ⁽⁹⁾
Considering that Co Q10 is essential for mitochondrial function and antioxidant activity, and since oxidative mechanisms are important in atherogenesis, it can be assumed that a reduction in CoQ10 level may compromise cardiac function despite optimal reduction in cholesterol levels by the use of “statin” drugs. ⁽¹⁰⁾

Furthermore, the reduction of ubiquinone levels might be associated with myopathy, a rare adverse effect associated with statin drugs. This "metabolic" myopathy is related to ubiquinone deficiency in muscle cell mitochondria, disturbing normal cellular respiration and causing adverse effects such as rhabdomyolysis, exercise intolerance, and recurrent myoglobinuria, and encephalopathies. ^{(11, 12, 13)}

Cholesterol Cause and Effect
Elevated LDL cholesterol poses a risk for cardiovascular disease when it invades the endothelium and becomes oxidized, since the oxidized form is more easily retained by the proteoglycans. A complex set of biochemical reactions regulates the oxidation of LDL, chiefly stimulated by the presence of free radicals in the endothelium. The more toxic metals residing in the body, the higher the free radical activity. Heavy metals in the body exponentially increase free radical activity and today everyone has far more heavy metals than ever. Thus, removing toxic metals from the body will greatly reduce the number and activity of free radicals. ⁽⁵⁾

The Safest and Most Effective Solution for the Candidiasis and Mercury Cycle

One of the most difficult organisms to diagnose and successfully treat is Candida albicans. C. albicans is a yeast that is considered part of the normal flora of the alimentary canal and is also, commonly found in the genitourinary system. By six months of age, 90% of infants test positive for Candida and almost all adults test positive. C. albicans is an opportunistic organism and exists in a competitive environment with other organisms to control its growth. This equilibrium in the gut and genitourinary tract can be disrupted by changes in the pH, high levels of simple sugars, hormone imbalance, antibiotic exposure that alters the make-up and quantity of the flora constituents and suppression of the immune system by toxins and drugs such as steroids. If this happens, overgrowth of Candida can occur and this organism can burrow through the walls of the intestine, enter the blood stream and make its way throughout the body.

Candidemia and disseminated candidiasis are the most common causes of morbidity and mortality in hospitalized patients, especially in the ICU. A predisposed host is one who is on broad spectrum antibiotics, immunosuppressive drugs, parenteral nutrition and central venous catheters. Data was extracted from the Prospective Antifungal Therapy Alliance database and demonstrated the incidence of candidemia caused by C.albicans was 45.6% and 54.4% was caused by non- C. albicans species. The overall crude 12 week mortality was 35.2%. There are no pathognomonic signs or symptoms (Horn DL et al. 2009). The clinical clues are fever of unknown origin or signs of severe sepsis while on antibiotics, and multiple, non-tender, nodular erythematous cutaneous lesions. The evaluation of new antifungal agents and the precise role of prophylactic therapy are needed. (Singhi S. 2009, Perltroth J, et al 2007)

Due to the ubiquitous presence of Candida, diagnostic testing is of little help. There are a variety of tests that practitioners use to diagnose yeast overgrowth, that may include stool tests, blood tests, live blood cell tests, etc., but none of these tests are reliable. They may or may not detect an infection of Candidiasis. (Pappas PG 2004)

Therefore, practitioners often diagnose and individuals often self-diagnose based upon ambulatory versus hospitalized status and a list of common symptoms associated with the gastrointestinal and genitourinary systems, immune, endocrine and the neurological system, including mental and emotional symptoms. This list includes: thrush, indigestion, acid reflux, abdominal gas and bloating, diarrhea, constipation, rectal itching, vaginitis headaches, migraines, excessive fatigue, inability to think clearly or concentrate, poor memory, hyperactivity, mood swings cravings for alcohol or sweets, anxiety, depression, irritability, dizziness, itching, acne, eczema, athlete's foot, sinus inflammation, persistent cough, sore throat, earache, pre-menstrual syndrome, low sex drive, muscle weakness, sensitivity to fragrances and/or other chemicals and chronic pain. (Crook W 1983, 2005) This wide-ranging list is significant and indicative of the toxicity associated with Candida.

A successful treatment strategy includes killing the organism and correcting the underlying causes for Candida overgrowth and dissemination. Pharmaceutical anti-fungals agents can be grouped into three classes based on their site of action: azoles which inhibit the synthesis of ergosterol, a major constituent of the fungal cell membrane, are considered fungistatic; polyenes also interact with ergosterol and cause membrane leakage resulting in cell death and 5-fluorocytosine inhibits protein synthesis.

Nystatin is a polyene, oral anti-fungal used primarily for the treatment of oral candidiasis. It is not absorbed out of the gut and has few mild gastrointestinal side effects.

Amphotericin B is a fungicidal polyene administered intravenously, which commonly can cause serious multi-organ damage and result in death. It is not frequently used since the development of the azole class of agents. This class has less side effects, ranging from mild nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, headache, dizziness and skin rash to severe blistering, bruising, jaundice and seizures. Side-effects for 5-fluorocytosine include bone marrow suppression, gastrointestinal, liver, kidney and central nervous system toxicity. Efficacy and safety issues and development of resistance limits the usefulness of all of these agents.

Historically, non-pharmaceutical approaches to killing or limiting the growth of Candida have not been well-researched. Thai and Ignacio (2005) demonstrated that grape seed extract had comparable fungistatic activity to Miconazole in suppressing C. albicans growth. They found that tea tree oil, probiotic supernatant and garlic showed no decrease in growth rates of C. albicans.

The good news is there is now a safe and effective natural solution for the serious issue of candidiasis. The average person in the US has between 400-800 potentially toxic, immunosuppressive, carcinogenic, endocrine-disrupting, and gene-damaging chemicals stored his cells and is therefore at risk for candidiasis. Mercury, lead, cadmium, arsenic, pesticides, insecticides, dioxins, furans, phthalates, VOCs, and PCBs are just some of the foreign substances that have created an excessive toxic body burden of harmful chemicals.

Of all the toxins, mercury is the most destructive to the neurological, immune and endocrine systems. It is a deadly mutagen causing DNA damage. Mercury contributes to or causes many illnesses including autism, autoimmune diseases, Alzheimer's disease, cancers, heart disease, endocrine problems, and neurological and behavioral disorders. Murray and Kidby (1975) demonstrated that Mercury is incorporated into the cell wall of yeast. This is the key to the toxic effects of candidiasis and the basis of the Herxheimer reaction. Mercury being released from dying cells is extremely toxic to surrounding tissues. The list of symptoms associated with candidiasis is the same list of symptoms associated with mercury toxicity. It is impossible to cure candida overgrowth without removing the toxic burden of mercury.

Prior to the discovery of antibiotics, health practitioners used colloidal silver to safely and effective treat infections. In 1914 the medical journal Lancet reported phenomenal results from silver use stating it to be absolutely harmless, non-toxic to humans, and highly germicidal. Study: Yeast Binds Mercury

Experiment and Findings:

Post 15 hour incubation, nearly all the mercury present was in the yeast cells, with almost none left in growth medium.
The major fraction of mercury was bound into the yeast cell walls. Only a small proportion of mercury appeared to be in weakly bound, ion exchange positions.
Yeast cell walls are capable of binding approximately their own weight of mercury.¹

Resveratrol

Tocotrienols
Vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) is an antioxidant, a natural biochemical substance that helps protect cells (including the heart and blood vessels) against damage from harmful free radicals. However, a lesser known form of vitamin E, called tocotrienol, is not only a more powerful antioxidant but, unlike tocopherol, helps lower cholesterol and reduce abnormal blood clotting. Studies have shown that tocotrienols may be twice as effective as an antioxidant.

Vitamin K-2
Arterial calcification is characterized as a buildup of calcium in the arterial walls. It is a process that can begin as early as the second decade of life and continue throughout adulthood. Although calcium is an essential nutrient in maintaining human bone integrity, the trick is to keep it out of the arteries. Studies have revealed that adequate levels of natural vitamin K2 may help in keeping calcium in your bones and out of arterial walls. Vitamin K works through an amino acid called "Gla," which stands for gamma-carboxyglutamic acid. Gla is a part of the kind of protein that controls calcium. Vitamin K is necessary for this protein to do it's work. Vitamin K performs this feat by "carboxylation" which gives proteins the adhesion they need to hold onto calcium. The proteins then move the calcium around. If proteins don't get enough vitamin K, they can't maintain the adhesion needed to move the calcium and the calcium will drift out of the bones and into the arteries and other soft tissues. In Japan, vitamin K2 is used as a therapeutic treatment for osteoporosis and in the Caucasian population it also has shown a significant benefit in the reduction of heart disease, due to its roles in calcium use and promoting matrix Gla-protein activity, a potent inhibitor of vascular calcification.

Dosage & Guidelines
• Place one (1) tablet of ACTIVE H in a 1/2 liter (~16 ounce) container of pure water (filled to the top) and close tightly. Wait at least 5 to 10 minutes before consuming. A one pint glass mason jar works well as a container.
• Consider the level of stress and/or physical activity that is expected as well as the duration of the activity. ACTIVE H hydrating drinks are especially beneficial for endurance sports like running marathons, cycling, climbing, etc.
• Residue may be observed in the bottom of the bottle after consuming ACTIVE H. This residue is un-reacted minerals, primarily magnesium compounds, that did not go into solution. The residue can easily be removed from your favorite bottle by simply pouring in about an ounce of white vinegar, closing the top and agitating it until the residue dissolves. Rinse the bottle well with clean water.
Daily Water Intake Recommendation
Regular enhanced use of Active H in pure water can help you achieve higher levels of performance for family life, work activity, and strenuous exercise. For adults, we recommend drinking 2–3 liters of pure water daily, as follows:

½ liter immediately upon waking and waiting at least 30 minutes before any food
½ liter (or more up to 1 liter) with one (1) fully reacted Active H tablet
Additional mineralized pure water as needed for more strenuous sports activity and adventure
