Most of us use our furniture as a focal point of our homes, but Takeshi Miyakawa‘s Visible/Invisible furniture series actually seeks to blend into its surroundings. Mirror-finished acrylic is used to create furniture that reflects the room it is in.

The reflections that bounce off of the acrylic surfaces are not simply exact reproductions of the furniture’s surroundings. The tables and chairs are bent with heat during the production process to create crackles, wrinkles and visually fascinating little folds.

Although they are perhaps more art than furniture, the Visible/Invisible series of objects are a fascinating look at the interaction between an object, its material and the space it occupies. Every Visible/Invisible piece would look completely different in every different room in which it sits.

If you think of the most comfortable places to relax, a hammock and a warm bath are probably near the top of the list. UK design studio Splinter Works combined the two into what might possibly be the most relaxing bathtub ever.

The Vessel is suspended from two walls via brackets and doesn’t touch the ground at any point, contributing to the illusion of a hammock in the bathroom. A tall, elegant curved faucet is mounted in the floor to cascade water into the tub.

A floor drain carries away the bathwater through a drain in the tub’s bottom after you’re finished soaking. However, you don’t have to hurry out of the tub – a foam core between the layers of carbon fiber insulates the water and keeps it warm much longer than a conventional tub.
Unless you live in a basement or some hermetic box (or, Harry Potter-style, under a staircase), the view outside your window is indisputably a part of your interior. Gurney Architect:
Architect Robert M. Gurney has designed the Tred Avon River House in Easton, Maryland.

From the architect

Easton, located in Talbot County on Maryland’s eastern shore, was established in 1710. Easton remains largely agrarian, with numerous farms interspersed among area’s many waterways. Diverging from several acres of cornfields, a one-quarter mile road lined with pine trees terminates at a diamond-shaped tract of land with breath-taking views of the Tred Avon River.
Arising from the gravel drive and hedge-lined parking court, this new house is unveiled as three solid volumes, linked together with glass bridges, suspended above the landscape. The central, 36 ft high volume is mostly devoid of fenestration, punctuated only by the recessed 10 ft high entry door and narrow sidelights. The contrasting western volume contains a garage and additional service space, while the eastern volume, floating above grade, contains the primary living spaces. After entering the house and passing through one of the glass bridges, the transformation begins. Initially presented as solid and austere, the house unfolds into a 124 ft long living volume, light-filled and wrapped in glass with panoramic views of the river. A grid of steel columns modulates the space.
Covered terraces extend the interior spaces, providing an abundance of outdoor living space with varying exposures and views. A screened porch provides an additional forum to experience views of the river, overlooking a swimming pool, located on axis to the main seating group. Along with a geothermal mechanical system, solar tubes, hydronic floor heating and a concrete floor slab to provide thermal mass, large overhangs above the terraces prevent heat gain and minimize dependence on fossil fuel. The entire house is elevated above grade to protect against anticipated future flooding.
The house is crisply detailed and minimally furnished to allow views of the picturesque site to provide the primary sensory experience. The house was designed as a vehicle to experience and enjoy the incredibly beautiful landscape, known as Diamond Point, seamlessly blending the river’s expansive vista.

Chilean company Thinker Thing just created the world’s first 3d printed object modeled using brain waves. The company’s Emotiv EPOC brain-computer headset allowed CTO George Lakowsky to 3D print an object just by thinking about it. The government-funded project uses virtual “evolutionary mutations” from the user’s mind to print 3D objects.

Kaplan Thompson Architects were challenged by their clients to build a farmstead home in the mountains of Virginia that could not only meet standards for Passivhaus and LEED, but include a roof on which sheep could graze.
The solution: Earthship Farmstead is a house that is nestled in the east-facing hillside with a floorplan that fits the contours of the surrounding fields. The dining and living room extend out onto the hill to allow south-facing shaded windows to capture warmth and light from the sun. Recently, Earthship Farmstead received Passive House certification and is gathering data toward LEED Platinum certification.

Throughout the home, materials were used that are renewable, sustainable, healthy, and local with strict limits on the use of VOCs and formaldehydes. Local white oak was used for flooring, Virginia black walnut was used for cabinetry, and American Clay Paint covers walls and exteriors. Insulation is provided by cellulose and water-blown EPS foam.

While the Farmstead has sufficient well water, pumps and fixtures are designed to put a minimal load on energy systems and water is captured from the roof for reuse.

To meet the German Passivhaus Building Energy Standard, the house uses 90% less energy for heating than typical houses with an estimated $500 per year total heating costs. Doors and windows by Makrowan and feature thermally broken frames and triple glazing. A 12 kW photovoltaic array on the barn supplies all of the farm’s energy needs.
The average cost of just one in vitro fertilization procedure (IVF) costs $12,400 with doctor’s fees. Now imagine having eight of them, without insurance, and all the side effects that go along with them. Sound like a nightmare? Consider that GMO foods, like soy, are proven to be responsible for higher rates of birth defects, infant mortality, and sterility. Bemuse the fact that 91% of all US soybeans are from GMO seed – and that’s just one crop. You should be more than nonplussed.

GMOs Wreaking Fertility

I’ve taught yoga classes for desperate women who want to conceive more than anything in the world. They have gone through countless medical procedures, rounds of hormones that make their ovaries swell so large they can barely get out of bed, and in vitro fertilization procedures that are costly and don’t always take. I know women who have tried to lower their stress, changed their diets, and had blockages removed from their fallopian tubes. While there are thousands of children who need to be adopted, sometimes a couple, understandably, wants to make their own family. With Monsanto, Dow and other Big Pharma companies churning out genetically modified seed like its candy for babies, it’s no wonder we can’t make any.
When considering the ill effect GMOs have on fertility, how is GMO food any different than the view of ruthless ‘leaders’ of the past - eugenics? A scary thought indeed, but GMOs are completely taking away our right to decide about our own reproductive health. Sickeningly, a GMO scientist says, “it’s awesome” that GMO causes infertility. I’m sure companies like Merck, and the makers of the seven most common fertility drugs comprising a multi-billion dollar industry think it’s ‘awesome’ too. Their bank accounts are probably equally awesome while real couples, and particularly women, have to deal with the deep sadness of not being able to conceive, while also putting their bodies through yet another kind of global experiment.
GMOs must come to a halt. The most recent March Against Monsanto that has taken place on May 25th of this year, along with the increasing numbers of GMOs bills being introduced, is a great start to making some changes. If you haven’t already, start buying organic and supporting some companies that care a little more than Monsanto and other mega-corporations. Voice your opinion by signing petitions, and vote with your dollar by supporting organic farmers and health-food companies. You can, no, you are making a difference.
Chissick Design just unveiled a new collection of beautiful fused wood furniture. Each piece is made of scrap wood collected from different carpenters that is fused together to create unique pieces of sustainable furniture. The salvaged wood furnishings range from credenzas and chairs to shelves and tables, and each piece is defined by the form of the materials collected.
Carrie and Shane Caverly built their first tiny home last year to reduce their overhead from a $1500 per month mortgage payment to $350 per month, which includes land rent, electricity, and water.
The Caverly’s eco-friendly 204 square foot home is built on a 5th wheel gooseneck trailer and features passive solar design, closed cell poly-iso foam insulation, low-E double-paned windows, FSC-certified manufactured wood siding, engineered wood flooring, post-manufacturer recycled framing lumber, on-demand hot water heater, low water incinerating toilet, recycled steel roof that collects rainwater, and grey water collection tank.

The bedroom is situated over the gooseneck hitch, with steps up to the bed that hide storage space and a dog kennel. More storage space is available over the bathroom, where they have located the bathroom sink inside the shower, and below the couch in the living room. The built-in porch at the back of the house is suitable for hauling a motorcycle or bicycles.

Shane is a building contractor and Carrie is an architectural designer. Together, they built their tiny home and have started a Clothesline Tiny Homes to build smaller houses and help others live a more efficient lifestyle in small spaces. A replica of their first tiny home is being sold being sold for $48,000 and they are accepting custom orders while fleshing out an online shop for downloadable design drawings, construction documents, and design consulting by the hour.
In a legislative blow against GMO giant Monsanto and major food corporations who wish to keep you in the dark over what you’re eating on a daily basis, the Vermont House has passed a significant new GMO labeling bill known as H. 112 by a count of 99-42.
I will be covering more news on this as it develops, but the great voter turnout means that representatives are either waking up to the reality of GMOs or at least being forced by voters to go ahead and take action on the GMO labeling issue. And as we’ve seen in other states like New Mexico, it comes down to a grassroots campaign demanding that action be taken while spreading awareness on a national level.
Unfortunately the New Mexico initiative, as you may be aware, was ultimately shot down by massive lobbying (as may have been expected with the recent passing of incognito legislation like the Monsanto Protection Act).
But despite the mass lobbying and mountains of cash that go into squashing labeling, around 90 plus percent (or more on average depending on the polling institute) of the public is in favor of GMO labeling — and an increasingly large number of this percentage are turning into hardcore activists who are sick of Monsanto’s food monopoly.

Activism Can Trump Lobbyists
What’s also interesting to note about this legislation, which is similar to Prop 37, is that it’s really the farthest in the legal system that any such bill has gotten. Prop 37 ultimately came down to a vote in California, and we know there was extreme foul play there with the Monsanto-backed organizations who sought to sabotage the entire GMO labeling initiative due to profit incentives, but the Vermont bill here can quite simply be passed by the Senate and be on its way to implementation.
I am very hopeful about this bill, and I think if we gather enough activism on this front we can send a message to the Vermont Senate that effectively reads: We will not tolerate Senators who betray the health of the public for profits and lobbyist relationships. I encourage everyone, whether you live in Vermont or not, to generate awareness over this issue. Share this article far and wide, and start demanding that GMO labeling be taken seriously.

Wood Contrasts with White in Converted Stable House

Wood Contrasts with White in Converted Stable House:

A dilapidated horse stable in Headborne Worthy, UK has been transformed into a beautiful modern home that keeps the structure’s charming historic elements intact. AR Design Studio saw the potential in this pastoral brick building, which had once been home to a retired champion racehorse in the 1940s but had been allowed to fall into ruin over the decades.

The firm painstakingly removed layers of paint from the wooden and metal surfaces of the stable, restoring them to their original beauty. Beams, stable partitions, wide doors and other original elements of the farm outbuilding now stand in sharp contrast to the expanses of white that surround them, highlighting their pitted and oxidized surfaces.

AR Design Studio added lots of clean lines, smooth walls, and large windows to the space, bringing in views of the surrounding countryside. The floors are made of polished concrete. The kitchen fits into its own stable space, but remains open to the dining room.

Despite the preservation of relatively confined spaces, the rooms feel airy and open, thanks to the color scheme as well as the soaring vaulted ceilings. Just off the tranquil bedroom space is a bathroom in which the horse troughs have been made into sinks.

Outside, the new roof and windows give the converted stable home a fresh look, while the original brick and stone still stand out as telltale signs of the structure’s past.
Our friend, Rhonda Pike, over at Hive Modular was kind enough to share some pictures with us of a client’s custom-designed home in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada that is based on the X-Line 016 model. Not including the three-car garage, the three-bedroom, 2.5 bathroom prefabricated modular house provides its residents with 2273 square feet of living space.

Hive Modular used passive home concepts for both the lighting and the ventilation. The Low-E, argon-filled clerestory windows in the center hall help to bring daylight into the center of the home and create a “chimney effect” ventilation system during the summer. Additional window groupings throughout the home allow for natural daylighting.

The furnace and HRV are ultra-high efficiency models and the outside of the home is protected by low-maintenance fibercement siding.
All Hive Modular homes are built using the latest modular fabrication technology and feature 2×6 exterior walls with engineered floor and roof trusses that are strengthened and reinforced for transport, which makes Hive homes more robust than many site-built houses. The Hive design team includes high-end residential architects who manage their customer’s projects with care and ensure that Hive homes are built with high-quality products.

Hive Modular homes are built sustainably: small and efficient with tight building envelopes and environmentally responsible materials and systems. Custom features, such as bamboo floors, can be incorporated, and they can help you to achieve LEED Accreditation, if you desire.
Rhonda tells us that they are working on more Hive prefab home designs this year and a LEED-certified commercial building in Minnesota that will incorporate shipping containers.
Andrew Mowbray has developed a new kind of natural modular building unit. For the past two years, the artist has been growing Lagenaria gourds in reusable acrylic forms, creating square blocks that can be stacked and locked together. The gourd is believed to be one of the earliest cultivated plants; it is easily dried and made into functional vessels such as bottles, instruments, and birdhouses. In a time of immense resource scarcity, Mowbray has created a new and sustainable use for gourds. By training them to grow in a square shape, Mowbray is able to produce inexpensive, organic building blocks.
Brooks + Scarpa have designed the Yin-Yang House in Venice Beach, California.

From the architects

The Yin-Yang House is a single-family home in a quiet Venice, CA neighborhood. The design objective was to create a space for a large and growing family with several children, which would create a calm, relaxed and organized environment that emphasizes public family space. The home is also meant to serve as a place to entertain and a welcoming space for teenagers as they seek social space with friends.
The home is organized around a series of courtyards and other outdoor spaces that integrate with the interior of the house. Facing the street the house appears to be solid. However, behind the steel entry door is a courtyard, which reveals the indoor-outdoor nature of the house behind the solid exterior. From the entry courtyard, the entire space to the rear garden wall can be seen; the first clue of the home’s spatial connection between inside and out. These spaces are designed for entertainment, and the 50 foot sliding glass door to the living room enhances the harmonic relationship of the main room, allowing the owners to host many guests without the feeling of being overburdened.
The tensions of the house’s exterior are subtly underscored by a 12-inch steel band that hews close to, but sometimes rises above or falls below the floor line of the second floor – a continuous loop moving inside and out like a pen that is never lifted from the page, but reinforces the intent to spatially weave together as a single space the indoors with the outside space.
Scale manipulation also plays a formal role in the design of the structure. From the back, the house appears to be a single-story volume. The large master bedroom window and the outdoor steps are scaled to support this illusion. It is only when the steps are animated with people that one realizes the true scale of the house is two stories.
The kitchen is the heart of the house, with an open working area that allows the owner, an accomplished chef, to chat with friends while cooking. Bedrooms are intentionally designed to be very small and simple, to provide larger public spaces, emphasizing the family over individual domains. The breakfast room looks across an outdoor courtyard to the guest room/kids playroom, establishing a visual connection while defining the separation of uses. The children can play outdoors while under adult supervision from the dining area or the office, or do homework in the office while adults occupy the adjacent outdoor or indoor space.
Many of the materials used, including the bamboo interior, composite stone and tile countertops and bathroom finishes are recycled, and reinforce the environmental DNA of the house, which also has a green roof. Blown-in cellulose insulation, radiant heating and a host of other sustainable features aids in the performance of the building’s heating and cooling.
The active systems in the home include a 12 KW solar photovoltaic panel system, the largest such residential system available on the market. The solar panels also provide shade from the sun, preventing the house from becoming overheated. The owners have been in the home for over nine months and have yet to receive a power bill.

The Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Connecticut, has made an undeniably compelling case for biomass energy. By replacing its outdated oil-burning boiler with a squeaky clean wood-chip biomass burner in the Biomass Heating Facility, the boarding school has reduced its winter energy bill by $350,000 and slashed its carbon footprint between 35% and 45%. Not to mention: The organic, undulating living green roof ain’t too shabby either. (And we are experts on gorgeous green roofs.) Click through for more.

Designed by Connecticut-based Centerbrook Architects, the biomass building combines contemporary design with a sustainable framework. While the wavy green roof may be visually stunning, it also has an important function. The soft slopes, combined with rain gardens, are designed to slow and filter rainwater before it enters the ground. From a far distance, the roofs appears to blend seamlessly with the surrounding rolling hills of the landscape.

Certainly much cleaner than burning oil, the new biomass incinerator combusts locally sourced wood chip from FSC-certified forests. According to the International Panel on Climate Change, appropriately sourced wood chip is effectively carbon neutral, because carbon lost to the atmosphere is reabsorbed by replacement trees. To make the building an even brighter shade of green, the biomass facility features water-saving faucets, local and recycled building materials, and energy-efficient lighting and ventilation.
Expected to be certified LEED Silver, the building is only the third power facility to achieve a LEED status in the US. Now that’s what we call green.
The plastic tiles are shaped like triangular pockets that can be placed on top of existing tiles, and they were designed for both plants and animals to live and nest on city rooftops. Like flat green roofs, the tiles will provide great insulation, energy savings, and they could also help to reduce stormwater runoff.

Jeffrey White, a real estate agent who resides near Salt Lake City, Utah, is spearheading the Sarah House Project, a nonprofit, community-based organization that aims “to provide fast, green minded, safe, affordable homes for the underserved.”

Built from converted, recycled shipping containers and named for a San Francisco artist who succumbed to cancer, the homes incorporate sustainability concepts, including the use of green materials such as eco-friendly plywood, bamboo flooring, and insulation that is made from recycled clothing. Electric radiant heat and insulating paint help to keep utility costs down. Seismically sound, the structures feature a termite- and fire-resistant exterior.

The Sarah House Project began with White’s attempt to convert a 40-foot container into a house on his driveway. After encountering problems with city officials, he started working with Crossroads Urban Center, a local nonprofit that “assists and organizes Utahns with low incomes, those with disabilities, and people of color to meet basic survival needs and to address essential issues affecting quality of life.” Through Crossroads, White was able to procure a parcel of land on which to construct his prototype with funding from a federal home grant, donations, and his own money.

Coming in at 672 feet, the Sarah House is being built from two containers and cost less than $120,000, including the land. When it is completed, Crossroads will sell the home to a low-income single or couple. White expects to reduce the cost of building future homes out of shipping containers for less than $75,000 and hopes to build small communities of shipping container homes for the impoverished or in-transition low-income households.
