Video Dream Theater - A Dramatic Turn of Events (2011). The recent announcement that Mike Mangini would be joining Dream Theater, replacing departed drummer Mike Portnoy caused such fanfare that Mangini was a trending topic on Twitter. That's impressive.

I haven't heard it yet obviously. From many of the comments, I'm pretty curious, but still not expecting my jaw to drop or anything. The comments online are comparing it to oldschool Dream Theater, Six Degrees, Falling Into Infinity and Awake. And I guess there is piano, audible bass guitar, and not any solos that over extend their welcome.

A Dramatic Turn of Events is an album born from transition, crafted with studied persistence and possessed by new-found freedom and free-flowing invigoration. The album strikes the perfect balance between Dream Theater's intimate history with all that is heavy, progressive and melodic with each element fully realized. Longtime fans of the band intrigued by the speediness of the notes on display from Dream Theater have much to study on the album, while fans of melodic hooks will find equal pleasure within the songs.

Alter Bridge - Rise Today. Formed in 2004 by Creed guitarist Mark Tremonti, bassist Brian Marshall, and drummer Scott Phillips. One Day Remains was released in 2004 to negative reviews but sold well, earning the band Gold (and nearly Platinum status) level sales of 750,000. Blackbird was released in 2007 and AB III last year, all receiving more critical praise and also all selling well. Alterbridge connects well with their audience and the music is edgier, more complex, and MUCH BETTER than the Creed offerings. Tremonti gets a little more freedom in the song and music writing here (he and vocalist Myles Kennedy are responsible for the lion's share of material), and it shows his true talent for making great rock songs.
