How to draw with good proportions a car? Many times I write about drawing with good proportions because it is the first thing to have on a car sketch or illustration. When we see our favourites car designs (it does not matter if sports or city utilitarian cars) we like how their volume stands on the four wheels (how the car sits on wheels). We like their proportions first. Ferrari, Lamborghinis , Fiat 500, BMW series 3 or 5 at so on have great proportions and this comes from our ability in drawing and sketching correctly, it is mainly part of our inner talent that makes us feel the good proportions by looking at our sketch and correcting it if necessary. Girogetto Giugiaro the famous italian car designer father of most successful designs of 80s and 90s is known as the father of good proportions on cars (check the first VW Golf, the Fiat Panda...).
Today I have chosen this great figure drawing done my Guno Park to tell you that when we go to design school (like Art Center College in Pasadena or AFAD University in Bratislava...) we start from art classes like figure drawing or life drawing tu study body proportions which is the most complex shape and volume to draw.
It is a matter of excercise, structural drawing and hand/arm movement. The same thing when we follow a Typeface lettering class (which is mainly for Graphic Design courses), reproducing perfectly free hand a type face or creating a new one is a proportions work very hard to accomplish. We play with positive and negative spaces to get good proportions, the figure drawing and the type face lettering interact with space and relate to it. We, reproducing them, do the same thing on a white paper giving balance to all this.

A car shape and volume is exactly the same thing, the size of the wheels and the wheelbase will give us the feeling for a good front and rear over-hang and also how high the car should be. We do this just with a simple linework to see and judge the proportions we are giving to our car sketch. After, as second step, we start giving shadows to draw volumes and body sections modeling the sketch to our taste. The third step is about detailing and decoration (without doing it too much).

So my final suggestion for you is to explore (for those that at design school do not follow this method) other drawing domains such as life drawing, figure drawing , Grapgic Design to learn about proportions and improuve on your car sketching.

How to get an internship in car design

Hi friends,

yesterday I have got an email from a design student asking me to write about how to get an internship in Car design.

It is a cool question to which it is not easy to answear, I'll try anyway according to my daily experience. Lets start saying that every car company has a method in selecting young talents, so what I am going to tell you is not a sort of universal way to do it. In general, where I work, we do receive by email or by traditional mail service portfolios and CVs with a presentation letter.
Those are the 3 important elements to have at a very high level, if I receive an internship request and the CV or motivation letter or (worst) the portfolio is not so good...well that is it, I stop having no interest to go on.

The CV
The CV must be good, very professional, precise without lies (we see them right away). The CV can have a nice editorial graphic same as your business card. The CV does not have to have your photo! For more info about CV read my article "To get a job start from a good CV"

The motivation or cover letter

Car sketch tutorial: rear view perspective

In this video tutorial you will find out how to start a nice car sketch in 3/4 rear view, the method used by the author is a bit different from what I learned in school (we used to start always by drawing the wheels and the base of the car); in fact, the author starts by defining a part of the rear volume and some details first to get the right proportions and perspective.At the same time he does draw the center section to manage the proportions control.
The result is not bad at all and, the objective of this video tutorial is "a good car sketch done free hand". The digital program used is Paint which I like very much for the realistic effect drawing on the tablette.

Car design training sketch it!

Often I visit Art Design Schools, Industrial Design Schools, Art Colleges, and several times I find interesting illustrations but poor sketches and many times few design projects or art students with a good sketch book. In car design training it is a must to learn how to sketch well in order to get all the techniques and the self confidence to move over in the experience and be betwenn the first in design classes. Unfortunately, lately and mostly in Europe, design students do not pay too much attention to this aspect for their career training. I remember that ,when I was a student at Art Center College of Design, to have a sketch book was a must starting the very first day. Even if it was difficult for me at the beginning with time I got better to the point of earning that important self confidence that gives you the real feeling you can draw about anything therefore cars,too.
Pforzheim University of Applied Science, Art Center College of Design, CCS Detroit, Royal College College of Art, IAAD Turin are some of the top Design schools where it is mandatory to start learning by drawing and sketching...to continue reading click Sketch it!

Hussein Al Attar is a student of Transportation Design at Pforzheim University of Applied Science currently 5th term, a part of his portfolio and skills is visible at Cardesignnews web site at the portfolio session. Hussein has also a page on DeviantArt.
Hussein is a talented student his car sketches are really good, he prefers to use a monochromatic technique with hard and soft black pencil, no backgrounds just his cars drawing in very exciting perspectives.
The rendering here published is an example of how he can go from extreme simplicity to a very flashy digital rendering. The illustration is well done with good perspective and dramatic color choice, high contrast and good control of warm and cool color zone with precise focal point.

Side view car sketch by Umidjon

Umidjon is a student in US and he has an obsession whiwh is to draw and sketch cars, even if he is not following a speciphic design car design school he is able to sketch well. This is a good example for you beginners, his side view car sketch coupé is very simple, not messy, few lines, freehand made, good proportions respecting basic reflexions rules on body, grey tones colors to give form and depth.
It looks like a very quick sketch, may be it is not but it gives that impression which is another good thing about Umidjon's car sketch.

It is true, today thanks to internet and some money to invest we can offer ourself a Design course basically in any discipline staying at home connecting ourself with our PC.

Hi friends,

at the end of my summer vacation in Italy I met a young ex student from a british car design school who wanted to show me his portfolio for some tips before looking for a job. As usual I told him that I was happy to do it and so we did. He came with his portable PC and showed me a sort of Power Point presentation with all the selected projects, at the end he also had his CV. I asked him to show me the presentation again, at the end of the second round I started to give him my constructive critic.

Usually a good design school has some courses about how to put together design portfolios, (Art Center in Pasadena US and IAAD in Italy IT do) this was not the case. The british school has a life of about 5 years which means that it is very young in the design education business and it is no guarantee for a good training. BMW supercar proposal by Giulio Partisani

Giulio Partisani is an ex student of IED Torino Design school in Italy and a professional designer, I liked a lot his illustration and proposal for this BMW Supercar. Very dramatic prospective (very low point of view and slightly tilted angle of image), cool color choice very cold with high contrast, great focal point (we can really read this composition), no prospective mistakes and naturally an interesting creative design not too advanced and not traditional, good balance. Last important note is the depth given by the prospective but mostly by the color application.
