DELETED CHAPTER FROM TIMELESS

Lizzie telling Keelie about being reincarnated

This chapter was in the advanced copy of Timeless I gave to reviewers, but I removed it before publishing the final version. It slowed the pacing of the book, and I decided not to have Lizzie tell Keelie about being reincarnated. So this scene never happened in the story, but if Lizzie were to tell Keelie everything, here is how it would go down! This chapter would have occurred after Lizzie’s mom agreed to go to England.

With all of this unbelievable stuff going on in my life, it was hard to remember that I was supposed to be a typical sixteen year old high school junior. Ever since the beginning of the school year when I saw Drew for the first time, my entire life had changed. But for everyone else who hadn’t recently discovered that they were reincarnated from Regency Era, England, and that their best friend accidentally cast a curse to kill them so they now had to travel back to the past to fix things, life was still normal.

I reminded myself of that when Keelie texted me later that night saying she thought Jeremy was interested in her, and how she wanted to make sure that was okay with me since we broke up recently.

Seeing that text made me realize something: Keelie was a kind, considerate person, and I truly wanted to be her friend. Throughout the years I grew comfortable with the friendship I had with Chelsea, but it had faults, especially after everything that had happened within the past few months. I had been afraid to tell Chelsea about my feelings for Drew, since she had announced her interest in him first. Luckily, Drew and I had the reincarnation-bond between us, which eventually brought us together again, but if circumstances had been normal, what would have happened? Would Chelsea have gotten the guy, and I would have been shafted because I was afraid to say something to my best friend since I didn’t want her to be angry with me? And if I did tell her, I knew Chelsea well enough to suspect that she would have claimed that she noticed him first, so I should let her be happy and focus on mending my broken relationship with Jeremy.

But maybe I wasn’t being fair to Chelsea. She might have done that before discovering the past lives that bound us together, but perhaps things had changed with her now. I wanted to believe that people could change, and that my friendship with Chelsea could return to normal.

At the same time, I had to branch out and get closer to other people—people like Keelie, who wanted to be friends with me. She cared enough about being friends to make sure it was okay with me that Jeremy was interested in her, even though I had no claim on him anymore. She also left Shannon’s party early to help me, even though we didn’t know each other well. On the car ride back to my house, I’d skimmed over what had happened between myself, Drew, Chelsea, and Jeremy, because I wanted to keep the reincarnation stuff secret from Keelie.

Now that I saw the possibility of a real friendship with her, was it fair to keep so much secret? Could a true friendship be formed when one person wasn’t being honest with the other?

It wasn’t difficult to figure out the answer to that question.

It’s fine with me, I replied to Keelie’s text. What are you up to tomorrow?

I should be working on a paper for class, but I’m up for distractions! she said.

Which is why five minutes later, we had plans to get ice cream the next day.

I couldn’t believe I was planning on telling Keelie everything. But if I wanted to be friends with her—true friends—I had to start the friendship off right.

The next morning, I wasn’t as confident about my decision as I had been last night. There was a high probability that Keelie would think I’d gone nuts, which was the same reason I hadn’t told my mom the full story. But unlike my mom, Keelie wasn’t a psychiatrist, so hopefully she wouldn’t psychoanalyze everything I said.

Even though she wouldn’t try diagnosing me with a mental disorder, there was the possibility she would think the story was crazy.

Hopefully Keelie had an open mind.

We ordered our ice cream and sat down at a booth in the corner—as far away from other people that I could find. I didn’t want others eavesdropping in on this conversation.

“Are you sure you’re okay with Jeremy asking me out?” Keelie asked. “If you’re not, I understand. You can tell me.”

“I’m sure,” I said, meaning it. “Even though we broke up recently, it had been coming for a while. And remember, I’m the one who broke up with him, so if he said he’s ready to move on, he means it.”

She spooned some ice cream into her mouth. “What did happen between you two?” she asked. “If there’s a reason why I should stay away, you would tell me, right?”

“He’s basically a good person, but we grew apart,” I said. “We had different interests. I was focusing on school since junior year is important for college applications, and doing more with my art. He didn’t understand why I wasn’t as interested in sports as he was.”

“You did look bored at the soccer game,” Keelie said with a laugh.

“Because I was!” I said.

“It’s that bad for you to watch?”

“Yep.” I nodded. “I don’t see the point of watching people kick a ball back and forth on a field. I find it boring. No offense to people who like it,” I added, since Keelie liked watching soccer. “It’s just not my thing.”

“I can sort of get that,” Keelie said. “I’ve never thought about why I like watching sports; it’s just something I enjoy. I guess it’s because I like the unknown … having no idea who’s going to win, and hoping that sitting there cheering will encourage our team and help bring them to victory. It’s also the competition that I like—how passion can trump logic. You never know how a game is going to end. It’s fun.”

“I never thought of it that way,” I said. I wasn’t going to turn into a sports fanatic now, but it was interesting to hear someone’s point of view that was different from mine. Chelsea only liked going to the games to socialize, and Jeremy wasn’t well-spoken enough to voice his opinion like Keelie just did. “It sounds like something Jeremy would think.”

“So you think the two of us will be good together?”

“I could definitely see it working,” I said. “You’re a much better fit for him than I ever was.”

“I’m glad you said that,” she said with relief. “I didn’t want to make things awkward for you if I started hanging out with him more.”

“It’s totally not awkward,” I assured her. “I would be happy for both of you—really.”

“Anyway, how are things with Drew?” Keelie asked. “When I drove you home from Shannon’s party, it sounded like everything was a disaster and you wanted nothing more to do with him. I’m taking from seeing the two of you around school that you’re together now?”

“We are,” I said, although I didn’t know how to continue from there. How was I supposed to tell her that Drew and I loved each other in a past life, but we never had the opportunity to be together, and now we were reincarnated so we could have a real chance in this life?

I felt ready last night, but now I had no idea where to begin.

“Is everything okay?” Keelie asked. “You just got really quiet.”

“Everything’s fine,” I said. “It’s just that the night of Shannon’s party, when I told you everything that happened with me, Drew, Chelsea, and Jeremy, I didn’t tell you the whole truth.”

“Oh?” Keelie raised an eyebrow.

“This is going to sound strange,” I warned her. “But do you believe in reincarnation?”

“That’s random,” she said. I had a feeling she was stalling because the question was so unexpected that she had no idea how to reply. “It’s one of those things that would be cool if it were real, but I never thought of it as an actual possibility.”

“So you don’t believe in it?” I asked.

“I’m not sure,” she said. “Why? Do you?”

“Well, I didn’t believe in it … until I met Drew.”

She looked at me in disbelief. “And since you met Drew, you believe in reincarnation?”

I nodded, my cheeks turning red. This was more humiliating than I had anticipated.

She leaned forward, and I hoped she was at least intrigued. “Do you think you and Drew … knew each other in a past life?”

“I don’t think so,” I said. “I know so.”

And the story spilled from there.

“You believe me?” I asked after I finished telling the story. The only part I kept to myself was how Genevieve was Shannon’s aunt. Chelsea had promised Shannon no one would find out, and I didn’t want to break that confidence.

“I think so,” she said. “There’s no reason for you to make this up, and I don’t think you would have told me if you didn’t believe it. Also, it would have been too coincidental for you, Drew, and Chelsea to remember the same things without talking with each other about it first. So it’s the only explanation that makes sense. It’s a lot to take in, though.”

“It was like that for me at first, too,” I said. “Sometimes there are still days when I wake up and wonder if this has actually happened, or if it’s been one long dream.”

“I suppose I can believe the past life stuff,” she said. “That you and Drew are soul mates and were reincarnated to be together. It’s romantic. But the rest of it, with the spells and the time travel—that’s where it gets hard for me to believe.”

“Understandable,” I said. It seemed like she thought I was loony for believing that time travel might be possible, but she was being nice in not making me feel bad about it. “I look at it like this. If it’s possible, then I’ll go to England, visit a time that I never thought I could, and make it so Chelsea’s spell has no effect on this life. If the spell didn’t do anything and we can’t go back in time, then at least I’ll have gone to England with Drew, and have had an incredible Christmas.”

“You’ll have to tell me all about it when you get back,” Keelie said.

“I will,” I promised.

Hopefully when I returned, I would have only good things to share.

HERE'S CHAPTER ONE OF BOOK THREE IN THE BLOOD MOON SERIES!

Claw-fingered shadows hung over my bed in the darkness and shredded my skin. I screamed out in terror, blood spewing everywhere. Then, like almost every night since my capture, I woke up. My clothes, soaked in sweat, clung to my body, tears stained my face and I shivered.

I remained under Laszlo’s watchful eye. He needed me, this he’d made abundantly clear. Actually, he needed my blood. Convinced, since I had become a Rafe, that drinking my blood would renew his youth and give him the same power I held. Healing.

After showering, I sat on the couch staring blankly out the window at the darkness. The door slammed and I jumped, then slumped back against the couch, too exhausted to argue with Peter. He entered carrying a tray topped with several blood bags. The same as he’d done each day since shortly after I arrived.

“I told you I won’t drink it,” I scoffed, not bothering to open my eyes and look at him. “You drink it and just tell Laszlo I did.”

“I can’t do that, Genevieve. He is not stupid and will know I am lying,” Peter said, his tone sounded frustrated.

I peaked from beneath one eyelid, watching a he cut open the top of one of the bags. The smell made my mouth water. I was starving, but refused to eat. “I’ll die before Laszlo drains my blood so he can live forever.”

Peter’s muscle’s flexed when he placed the tray on the glass topped coffee table sitting in front of the couch. I swear I felt my insides gnawing at each other. I grew weaker by the day, but I’d never let Peter know.

“I’m not doing this for Laszlo. I’m … I’m worried about you,” he uttered, dropping his gaze.

I wanted to believe him, but couldn’t. Not with him being Laszlo’s ‘nephew.’ “Get out and take the tray with you,” I said, aggressively.

“You are so damn stubborn! I don’t know how William ever put up with you.” Peter snatched the tray off the table, slinging one of the bags to the floor. He didn’t even bother to pick up the stupid thing.

I remained frozen until he slammed the door behind him, then scooted forward and stared at the bag laying on the floor. When I couldn’t stand it anymore, I snatched it up, bit off the top and guzzled it down. “Mmmm,” I moaned, closing my eyes while the sweet nectar ran down my throat.

After I finished, doubt filled my mind. I’d spent the last several months believing I was strong. Physically and emotionally. In reality, though, I was a scared little girl who could throw cars and kill mythical creatures.

I took the bag and squeezed the remaining few drops into the bathroom sink, hoping I could convince Peter I had poured it out.

My head snapped toward the door when I heard someone knock. I glanced back at the mirror and made sure no traces of the blood got left behind. “Who is it?” I snapped.

“It is Dahlia,” she called from outside my door. “Are you okay, Genevieve?” Her voice, soft and dainty, reminded me of my mom’s.

“Yes, I’m just freakin wonderful,” I groaned, opening the door. “Still kidnapped. Still Laszlo’s intended lunch in a couple months. Still no way of knowing if William is coming for me. But I’m peachy,” Sarcasm dripped from my voice as I stepped to the side allowing her entry.

Dahlia’s long flowing golden hair got caught in the door when I closed it, jerking her head back. “I’m sorry. I really didn’t mean to do that. Her hair fell past her waist, nearly the same length as mine. People often told me my hair flickered like fire because of its flaming red color. She always wore a long black robe with hood, which she normally kept her hair tucked inside, but lately she’d been letting it hang loose. Sometimes I found her being William’s mom hard to grasp. She didn’t look a day over thirty but was, in fact, almost two-hundred.

I moved to the couch and plopped down, then sounded like a tire after it sprung a major leak.

“Oh darling,” she said, her head tilted and the corners of her mouth dipped downward. She wrapped me in a hug and stroked my hair. I would have found it weird coming from anyone else, but from her it seemed … right. “Don’t lose hope. I am trying everyday to get word out to Angelica.”

Angelica, another seer and close friend of Dahlia’s had given my twin sister, the Adlet warriors, and me a place to stay while we devised an escape plan for William. Laszlo had taken him hostage in order to get to me and his plan worked perfectly. William and I had simply swapped places.

We both sat quietly, staring out the large tower window. “Will I have to stay locked inside this room until …” I trailed off, thinking about my fate and growing more depressed by the minute.

“Peter and I have both asked Laszlo to let us take you outside of the tower, even in chains, but he won’t budge. Not yet anyway. Give Peter a little time. Laszlo has a soft spot for him.”

I couldn’t see Laszlo having a soft spot for anyone, even if he had been in love with Peter’s mother. She had been dead for a long time. Raped and killed by rogue vampires.

My shoulders sagged and I sighed. “Yeah, whatever,” I mumbled.

After Dahlia left, promising to come back later, I trudged over to a little writing desk, took out pen and paper, and began another letter to William.

Dearest William,

I’m barely holding on to the hope that you will find me before … well, just before. I can’t breathe in this place. Laszlo has me locked inside a tower with tungsten steel doors, locks. It’s even woven inside the windows.

As I said before, all I know is I’m inside a castle tower in the mountains. Where are you? Each day that passes brings me one day closer to my eighteenth birthday and the night the blood moon will rise.

Dahlia says Peter is working on getting Laszlo to let him take me outside. If I can get out, I’m going to gain Peter’s trust and when the time is right, run away. Even if I’m caught and killed it has to be better than what Laszlo has in store for me. Just thinking about such a crazed lunatic makes me want to hurl.

I love you and time is running out. I have even thought of removing my ring. We both know what the end result would be. I’m not giving up on you, just trying to be realistic.

Hurry up and find me … please. I can’t take much more of this.

This book is part paranormal, part contemporary fiction and has adventure, romance, suspense, and a whole lot of sand. To pique your interest I thought I’d pull a few choice sentences from a couple chapters in the book. Hopefully you enjoy reading these and finding them again in the full context of the book.

Prologue: The sensation of drowning is like nothing else in the world. One moment you breath as normal, head above water, oxygen entering through your nose, filling your lungs; and then the next moment your head dips underwater and stays there. One Year Blogoversary!

So, today marks one year since I started blogging. I can't believe it's been a year already. This week is a really exciting week for me, aside from the blog turning a year older, I am too! I turn 21 this year (woot!) and I'm finishing up one of my classes this week, so that'll be one more thing off my plate.

I want to thank everyone who reads this blog, even though I don't say it enough, I really do appreciate all of my readers, whether you've been following since last year or last week, it's all exciting to me. I never thought people would actually read this blog, it was originally for me to keep track of what books I read and post my thoughts so I would remember the basic ideas of the books. I know I haven't been keeping up too well lately with my reviews, but I do have a pile of them to post really soon (I hope). My classwork throughout the past year has gotten in the way of blogging and reading tremendously. I am hoping that once I graduate and finish my exam for my career field I will have more time to devote to reading and reviewing all things YA.

So again, thank you all for reading my blog, and I promise the content will get better just as soon as I don't have a million classes to juggle at once!

Personally I love this cover, I think it fits perfectly with the other two in the series (and I'm so glad they haven't done a redesign of the series' covers!). The reflections in the glasses are absolutely fantastic on all three covers. I love all of Ally Carter's covers on both her Heist series and her Gallagher Girls series. The Gallagher Girls book covers seem to fit the stories so well, so I hope these covers match up with the stories too. I haven't read the Heist Society series yet, I have both books on my shelf (and even the sunglasses pictured on the covers). I'm positive I'll love the series because I love Gallagher Girls so much. Ally's writing style is light and fun and I really enjoy her books. I'm hoping the spine of this book is pink because I don't have near enough pink books on my shelf. I have a feeling it'll be the gold coloring on the spine though since that's how books 1 & 2 were designed.

BEA Wrap-Up: Day 3 (6/7)

Finally the last day. As much fun as this week has been it was so tiring that I’m pretty glad it’s over. My parents and I decided we would only bring one of our suitcases because I figured it was a ½ day event so there’s no way we’d get as many books as Tuesday or Wednesday… WRONG! We ended up with only a few less than Wednesday’s haul, but still more than Tuesday’s. I’d come more prepared today, I had sticky notes with what things my parents were supposed to go to that I wouldn’t be able to make it to. It worked out nicely except that I gave myself a galley drop to go to and forgot about it, so I missed out on getting Origin. I was a little upset at myself for missing that one, but figured I had plenty to read in the meantime until the book is released. Anyway, while waiting in line in the morning, we all decided to get a picture in the Reached bubble (with our own cameras since the professional guys weren’t quite set up yet).

The main goal for Tegan and me at today’s event was collect as much swag as possible… starting with the “Authors Are My Rockstars” t-shirt being handed out at Sourcebooks in the morning. We made it over there, got the t-shirts, and were still able to run around to the rest of the morning galley drops.

From there we kind-of wandered around for a couple hours until the first signing event we wanted to go to. Which was for Jocelyn Davies A Fractured Light, and Sarah Crossan’s Breathe. I’m pretty amazed at how many people would be “in two lines” (or more) at the same time because one signing hadn’t started yet so someone would stay with the bags while the other went off to a different signing, usually in progress, with a short line… then they’d come back and switch off. Tegan and I did this a few times throughout the week.

I thought the “For Dummies” swaggish items were adorable… I mean, who wouldn’t want some Spring Water for Dummies, or M&Ms for Dummies (Which actually say “For Dummies” on each M&M…

We thought the wrapper for the Wimpy Kid chocolate was cute enough to keep… I almost didn’t want to let my dad eat the actual chocolate though when he opened it because of the design in the chocolate! Talk about some expensive advertising… that custom chocolate design could not have been cheap!

Between all 4 days (BBC and BEA), books for me as well as my parents and giveaway titles totaled 166… I’d call that a huge success! I’m going to have lots of fun reading for a LONG time! On Friday, June 8, I spent 7 hours re-organizing my existing bookshelves (2 large five-shelf cases and 2 three-shelf cases) to accommodate the new books from BEA… they are now all in alphabetical order by author and separated by YA, Adult, and Middle Grade sections. The adult and middle grade books share one shelf… all the rest are YA and I was left with about 1/3 of a shelf on one of the smaller three-shelf bookcases left for more books… looks like I’ll need more shelves (and a bigger room) soon. I had so much fun at BEA this year, and met so many great people that I hope to stay in touch with as the year progresses. I am not sure that I’m up for another round of BEA next year, but I guess I’ll just have to wait and see what happens then!

BEA Wrap-Up: Day 2 (6/6)

Day two! After yesterday, we were much more prepared for the day. My parents checked in our bags while I went to find Tegan, along with her sister Lexie, Briana and Tash, in line to get in. I had apparently missed the morning event again (the Carnival of Souls army was yesterday's). Today's was the Finale, by Becca Fitzpatrick, cover reveal... complete with gorgeous fallen angels walking around with flyers... and no shirts. (Pictured below is Tegan with said shirtless angels)

We all rushed around to the big publishers (and a few of the smaller ones) right away at 9AM, for the morning galley drops (let me tell you, these morning drops are intense… we got some awesome titles, but it is like a mad dash to the books with these people)! We missed the Becca Fitzpatrick signing for Hush, Hush, in which they were handing out t-shirts inspired by the series (upsetting that we missed it). Tegan and I went to Simon & Schuster later in the afternoon to ask if they still had any left and the woman working in the booth found 2 shirts left (we were excited). I had a ticketed author signing at 10:30 for John Green, so I went to that while Tegan grabbed a place in line for the Harlequin Teen Hour. I had to use my “avid reader pass” (a line-jumper pass) on the John Green line (which was absolutely insane) so that I could make it back to Tegan in time for the 11AM signings. I ended up within the first 10 people in line for John Green because of that pass, so it was worth buying. He even signed the book I brought from home, Let It Snow. (blurry picture, but you can still tell it’s him!)

On the way back from getting The Fault in our Stars I was able to get Lois Lowry’s signature on a Son poster she was signing (I thought she’d be signing the book, but figured a poster was better than nothing and it’s a pretty poster). Anyway, I made it back to Tegan in line for the Harlequin signings with a little time to spare (about 15-20 minutes I think), they really had fantastic authors at Harlequin teen signings on both days. While Tegan and I ran around to all the different booths (many times over usually), I was sending my parents on missions of their own for signings or galley drops that I’d have otherwise missed because they conflicted with something else in our schedule. While we were randomly walking around (until one of our many signings), we spotted Tim Gunn from Project Runway. His line was long so we didn’t wait in it (and we really had no interest in his book), but I did get a picture of him with some random fan… mostly because I could and I thought it was neat to see a celebrity there (I hadn’t seen the others that were supposed to be around).

Later that afternoon, I was waiting in line for Maureen Johnson's signing (originally scheduled for 12:30), however the sign at the table said 12:00, so I figured "awesome it's been moved up!" and I could get back in line with Tegan (who was waiting in line for the HarperCollins teen hour at the time). Apparently though, BEA had decided to change the time (or mistype it on the sign, I'm still not sure) and no one told Maureen, or her publicist... (so thoughtful BEA!). So they started lining us up at the table at around 11:50 so we'd be out of the way (at least a little), but then 12:00, and 12:05 came and still Maureen had not shown up. A couple people in line started tweeting her asking where she was (myself included because I know she lives on Twitter), and figured out she had no clue she was supposed to be there. The BEA people finally found her at 12:20 and got the signing started (I still think they're idiots for changing things the night before the signing and not telling the author that's supposed to be there). Maureen is a great person though, and despite being a little frazzled at the change of plans started signing books pretty quick. She even brought YA Saves t-shirts (YAY!) AND signed Let It Snow, completing the process of getting all three authors to sign it!

We also met Sarah Beth Durst (Author of Drink, Slay, Love) and Jennifer L Armentrout (author of Cursed, The Lux series, and the Covenant series)

Tegan and I had a very special mission today because we had gotten the Survivors t-shirts yesterday, we had to go to the signing of book 2 in the series at around 2PM. I don’t know who was more excited, us for getting to meet the author and find a new series to start, or the author of The Survivors when she saw us in the shirts promoting her book. (Below: Amanda Harvard, author of The Survivors series… I caught her mid-laugh… oops!)

When I got home, before I had unpacked the suitcases of books, I told my parents about the Son poster Lois Lowry had signed and how I’d have loved to get a copy of the book (but I thought it was only given out at the children’s author breakfast that morning). My dad told me he thought he got a copy of it, but wasn’t positive if he’d actually taken it or just looked at it. Naturally, I kinda ripped apart the suitcase to see if he had snagged a copy (which he did because he’s awesome). I’m going to have to read The Giver #2 & 3 soon now so that I can get to Son. I then spent the next half hour positioning the books (& swag & tote bags) in our living room to take pictures of everything (which I’d gotten only a little better at since yesterday).

BEA Wrap-Up: Day 1 (6/5)

I had originally planned on writing up individual posts for each day of BEA the evening after each day's events. However, when I got home every night last week I was so exhausted from running around BEA that I decided I’d just do them later. Today seemed like a good day to start, seeing as it's exactly one week after the event and it seems like many bloggers are posting their “Mailbox Monday” type posts as BEA editions this week. So anyway, here’s the beginning of my BEA wrap-up with all the goodies I got :) (this is just day 1 of BEA, days 2 and 3 will come in the next two days)

Tuesday was an early morning again to catch the train into the city. When we got in we checked our bags and headed up to level 3 for the exhibits. The Carnival of Souls army was out already by the time we got up to the line to get in.

Since this year was my first BEA, I essentially had no clue what was going on, so I missed all of the first day’s galley drops at 9AM (most of which must have taken a ton of time to set up because they were almost all circle stacks that were pretty high).

Walking around the exhibit hall was completely overwhelming. I had an Excel spreadsheet listing all of the books I definitely wanted to get (most were signing events that I had found on the BEA website). At 11, the Harlequin teen hour was starting so my parents and I started milling around the booth around 10:30 so we’d get a good spot in line. I saw a group of girls talking to one of the Harlequin people about where the line would start, so I kinda stalked them so I’d be behind them (at the front of the line). That’s where I met Tegan and Tash, who I pretty much followed around for the rest of the day because our schedules were pretty much the same. Tegan & I stuck together for the rest of the week, which was great and we even found out we only live like 20 minutes from each other. We found a bunch of books by accidentally being in the right booth at the right time (like Wake by Amanda Hocking in the MacMillan booth during the time of Gennifer Albin’s Crewel signing), as well as getting to many of the books we had marked as “must get” on our pre-made schedules.

I don’t think I felt much less intimidated by the size of the exhibit hall by the end of the day, but I ended up with some awesome titles! Tegan & I also got T-shirts for “The Survivors” series by Amanda Harvard. (Pictured below: All swag from Day 1… the shirt is down at the bottom)

After the event, we had planned to get to go to the Teen Author Carnival. The Javits Center however, had other plans for us. There’s a really big sign outside the center that says “TAXI LINE” so that people can line up where the taxis can drive into the circle and line up at the curb. Apparently because of the buses, Javits (or BEA, or some other idiot) decided that taxis weren’t allowed in at the end of the show, only the shuttle buses that went around the city. We only knew one shuttle route – to Penn Station – because that’s the only one we’d used in the morning. So we had to go to Penn Station to get a taxi from there to get to the Library where TAC was being held. BEA must have hired a third party bus company to run extra shuttles at the end of the day because we had a different company’s bus taking us to Penn Station. So we get on this shuttle and the driver starts asking the guy that’s directing the buses how to get to Penn Station! Like WHATTTT?! What person who’s driven anywhere in NY before DOESN’T know how to get to Penn Station? The 8th & 31st street stop comes up (right next to Penn Station) and the driver blows right past it. The entire bus starts screaming because people had planned on catching trains that were leaving in like 5 minutes, so the driver pulled over right away and let us off randomly at the side of the road. Finding a taxi wasn’t so bad though, (my mom’s not the jump into traffic for a taxi type so we had to go next to the train station where the taxis were already lined up). I figured if I told the taxi that we needed to go to the library (even just a branch) they’d know where it was… false. Apparently, you MUST have a street intersection for the taxis to know where the hell they’re going.

After all this fun, we headed to a little pizza place near the Jefferson Market Library before the Teen Author Carnival. My parents and I were totally exhausted before TAC even started, but we stayed for the first panel so that I could meet Jeri Smith-Ready & get her to sign my copy of Shine (which was totally awesome)!!

My mom’s advice to NYC: When you know you have out of town guests coming, clean up the city! At least just from the train station to the Javits Center… the view was not fantastic. The city looks pretty run down in that area.

At the end of the day, my haul was really heavy and pretty obnoxious to take on the train back home. I’m very glad I had my parents with me or I’d have been in some trouble with those bags (well, I wouldn’t have had near as many books I suppose).

These are all the tote bags I got during day 1… the Angry Birds one that my dad picked up was probably my favorite. I also love the Clifford one because I was able to get my picture taken with Clifford at Scholastic’s booth! (I’ll have that picture on the blog’s Facebook page soon)
