Ashleigh Webb of Sugar Sisters

from Pakenham in Victoria was one of our prize winners

at Cakeriffic last year.

Whilst blogging about the James Bond cakes last week I was impressed by the cakes at It Takes the Cake based in Alfred Cove, Western Australia. So impressed was I, that I thought I'd blog exclusively about them today.

Look at this fabulous "old radio" cake. How fantastic is that!

Hilarious lolly-eating big shark. Love this!

Love the London bus. Great idea for the older pommie!

Gorgeous pastel colours for the baby celebration.

I had to put the next one in because the DH is Scottish - makes me want to get married to him all over again just so we could have cute cake toppers like this!

007 reporting for duty

007 continues in celebration of the creator of James Bond.

From Kidacity in Brisbane comes these fantastic cupcakes.

Good clear images from the franchise and I love the dinner jackets with bow ties.

Natti's Cupcakes from Canvey Island, Essex makes cakes for family and friends and made this Bond cake.

She has included the main things you think of when it comes to James Bond - the tuxedo, poker chips, cards, dice, James Bond himself, the logo and gold gun.

Luckily the cake was for a seven-year-olds birthday so the Bonds's spy number fitted very well and is also featured on the dice - I like little details like that.

A slightly different and perhaps not necessarily a "Bond theme" is this shirt with lipstick on the collar.

These awesome cupcakes are by Mossy's Masterpiece.

Love the Goldfingers, the martinis and the images of Bond.

Each cupcake quite simple but together look brilliant - although those torsos look a bit difficult to do (must have used a mould me-thinks).

The iconic spiral design Bond image has been changed a wee bit to reflect the age of the birthday boy.

Sue Harrison's Amazing Cakes from Sydney made this fabulous cake.

Sue says that this cake mix was "shaken not stirred" lol.

These cookies use piping and flooding methods and what a great job Jill from Custom Cookies by Jill has done.

Continuing the theme of James Bond this week.

Today would have been Ian Fleming's birthday.

Happy birthday to those who share their birthdays with the creator of James Bond.

First up, from Takes The Cake in Western Australia comes this fantastic Bond cake which has ingredients of the James Bond persona - golden gun, poker chips.

Another iconic Bond image is the Aston Martin car seen here in cake form from Etoile Bakery in London, England.

Do you know how Ian Fleming decided on his super-spy's name?

He wanted an unassuming name rather than something like "Peregrine Carruthers" and hunted around for inspiration.

This came in the form of the author of a book about birds which he had in his collection and which he used often as he was a keen birdwatcher (a bit like Bond who also liked to "watch birds").

I love the sentiment of this next one: "licensed to thrill". lol.

Shaken, not stirred

This week is the writer Ian Fleming's birthday.

For those who don't know,

this is the man who created James Bond.

During World War 2 Fleming worked as an assistant to the Director of Naval Intelligence in the Admiralty in London, privy to many secrets. It was his experience in this job that was to provide many of the characters and incidents that he was to write about later in the Bond books.

He also wrote Chitty Chitty Bang Bang for his son.

Sadly Fleming passed away way back in 1964

at the age of only 56.

There are some great images associated with James Bond and they are used in these cakes.

From Little Wish Cakes in Perth Western Australia comes this fabbo Bond cake. The image shows all four sides as well as the fantastic cake stand.

The Cakeworks in County Durham, England, made this James Bond birthday cake which is quite different from the one above. I love the wee Bond Figure sitting on the edge of the cake in typical Bond pose.

There's a whole party theme here including these Bond cookies with the birthday boy's image on them.

These were made by Casey's Confections in Arizona, USA.

At Variedades Dalila is this totally awesome James Bond scene - everything is edible including the helicopter.

I love these "baddies" - brilliant!

Always a fashion statement.

I recently went along to have a look at the CDAV cake competition at their seminar in Melbourne.

The competition featured cakes decorated in a

black and white colour scheme, which (ask any cow) is always a fashion statement!

This posting is going to be a shameless plug wearing my other hat - apart from the Cakeriffic expo I also organise the "From Picture to Page" papercraft show which is on this weekend at The Cardinia Cultural Centre in Pakenham Victoria.

The thing that is common to both of these shows is our

Kids' Creative Corner.

This run by Janita who is an incredible talent and comes up with all sorts of fantastic projects for the kids to make.

Paper Japanese dolls, to paper teddy bears and

...paper cakes! (see how I did that).

From Paper and Glitter comes this paper cake.

This cake found on a pinterest board, has edible paper appliqués with royal icing embroidery technique on top.

This cake reminds me of being in school and cutting out shapes from coloured paper. They are in fact fondant.

This three-tier cake from So You Think You're Crafty is made from paper. Each tier is made up of eleven individual paper cake slices that are attached to each other. The pieces come apart easily, so when the party is over, each guest gets to take a piece of cake home.

Fill each cake slice with candy or any other special treat.

The cake makes a great centerpiece. You can use an infinite amount of color combinations based on the occasion. Imagine how beautiful the cake would look made out of white paper for a wedding! Make it out of pink or blue for a baby shower just like this one from Paper Creations by Kristin.

She has heaps of other samples on her blog for themed paper cakes.

Featuring beautiful cupcakes from Ooh La La Cupcakes who are based in Narre Warren, Victoria.

I love these gorgeous cupcake flowers. So pretty.

Apart from baking to order they also offer a mobile cupcake decorating party service. This is a great party idea for a child’s birthday or ladies event.

In 2011, Ooh La La Cupcakes started an initiative called ‘Cupcakes for a Cause’. A percentage of every order placed is donated directly to charity and selected charity events.

I think it's worth also mentioning that in 2013 Cupcakes for a Cause raised enough money to donate money for a local community in Fiji and provide shoes for almost 60 school children. Resources such as books, learning aids and administration tools were donated by a number of local businesses partnering with Ooh La La Cupcakes to make a difference where it is needed most.

Awesome!

They were the winner of the 2013 Home Based Business award in the Casey Business Awards and have also been announced as a 2014 Finalist.

Mum's 90th Birthday

We had my mum's 90th birthday party on Saturday and this is the cake that my niece Hana Owen made.

It shows a table with a pale blue cloth and plates of "finger food" all made from fondant. These are all things that my mum would always make for a party.

Starting from the bottle clockwise:

*smoked salmon blinis

(wee pancakes with smoked salmon and cream cheese)

*curried eggs

*devils on horseback

(prunes wrapped in bacon)

*tomatoes & cheese

(tiny tomatoes with soft cheese between them)

*cucumber rounds

(with sun-dried tomato on top)

*ham squares

(layers of ham, cream cheese & with a pickled onion on top)

*savoury tarts

*salmon mousse (love that fish!)

(the vegetarians favourite)

*pate

* and a wee birthday cake right in the middle

We put a candle on the wee cake and sang happy birthday.

All made from fondant (the "prunes" inside the devils on horseback were currants).

Really good job from an amateur home baker

and Mum was very pleased.

The toothpicks were whittled down from life-size toothpicks.

Fantastic job Hana Owen!

ANZAC Day - the day we remember and try to come to terms with how many young men and women gave up their lives in war. And how many served their countries regardless of which "side" they were on.

They were all someone's son, husband,

brother, uncle, nephew or friend.

As I mentioned the other day, my old mum turned 90 and flowers are quite popular for an older persons birthday, such as this cake from Donnas Designer Cakes.

Anyone who gets to 90 deserves a celebration cake!

My old mum turned 90 on Thursday and so I have been looking at cakes for the elderly women in our lives.

At Imaginative Icing I found these two neat cakes:

My mum is an avid reader and an avid cook so both themes would be great for her. Basing your celebration cake on a person's hobby or sport is popular and solves the problem of just what to make, quite easily.

There are tutorials on the net for all sorts of modelling including figures.

Google Polymer clay modelling too, as many projects are suitable for fondant modelling.

At Veronica’s Cornucopia I found this cake with flowers on it. Another popular theme for women of all ages (although I'm not sure about blue roses, but maybe the message is that the birthday girl is "rare". lol).

I do love the flowers on this next one from London Patisserie.

Very pretty.

For a lover or maker of patchwork comes this lovely cake from Fat Cow Cakes.

Quite a simple solution and could be done in other colours - perhaps dark colours for a male birthday.

It's Easter Monday and so I'm milking

this theme for today too.

I've made these Easter baskets last Easter, but used those rainbow straps cut into thinner strips for the handles. Showed a bunch of ladies how to do them and kept forgetting to put the handles in before the rest of the stuff. Used green-coloured coconut strands for the grass.

I really like these chick cupcakes from The Cupcake Blog especially the ones that are still hatching. Great idea.

Okay so it's nearly Easter and a lot of people are going away and then there's the rest of us! lol.

I've been neglecting the blog and am back on it today to share some fantastic things I found on the net.

There's lots of themes for Easter -

and lots of ways to do them.

Who doesn't love a bunny. I reckon you don't even have to be an expert to make a good-looking bunny cake like these:

I came across a couple of dragon cakes on Pinterest and thought I'd google to see if there were any others.

WOW! Of course there are heaps! (duh!)

Here's just some of the ones I like a lot.

Mike's Amazing Cakes in the USA are just that - totally amazing including this awesome dragon.

Another green dragon with a cartoon-like feel to it.

This one is a cake topper and I found it here.

This awesome green dragon cake was made by a very talented Canadian baker named Rita at the Touché Touchet bakery in Columbia, Maryland. Large enough to feed 50 people, every inch of the cake is edible. The dragon’s skull and free-standing spines were made using chocolate. Everything else is cake and icing and it all looks ferociously delicious.

Thought I'd share some photos from the

Cakeriffic expo last August.

The first are those very cute doggies that John Quai Hoi from My Cake Delights was demonstrating at his stand. John will be back this year and we look forward to his fantastic demos.

Pure Heart Bulk Foods list organic and gluten-free

amongst their cake mixes.

Where Is My Cake were selling stickers at the expo last year, however they have expanded their range and will be offering other goodies that you won't want to miss.

Some samples of the amazing Sugarveil Fondant Lace. We'll be having more demos on that this year too.

New Year

I see that my last post was concerning my twin brother, Phil.
Sadly, he passed away on Christmas Day. He had oesophageal cancer which he had been battling since September 2012.
I do not believe that he was in any pain as I spent most of the his last few days with him. It was however, harrowing to watch him deteriorate and face the inevitable outcome.
He was a loyal brother and fought against this terrible disease as much as he could bear to.
I had spent 2 hours in the morning with him and gone home to make the Christmas dinner at ten am. I told Phil that I would be back between 2 and 3 and arrived back at the Palliative care hospital at 2.40pm. He died at 2.30pm.
He was a moderate person and private about a lot of things emotional and perhaps his passing was something he felt he also had to do privately.

It has been a few weeks since this happened and apart from the odd meltdown, life must go on and in fact I am thankful for the "normality" of life and for the jobs and pastimes that are with us each day and that we must move through in order to "get things done" as it were.

The info for Cakeriffic has gone out to the traders and we are all looking forward to a brilliant expo with lots more traders as well as a cake competition (and we are also doing the photo cake wall again!).

I want to wish you all a Merry Christmas

and apologise for the lack of posts.

My own Christmas is not to be a happy one as my twin brother went into palliative care on Saturday.

He has easophagul cancer and

I do not think he will see the year out.

We hope for a miracle and if that is not to be,

then we pray for a peaceful end.

I hope your Christmas is happy and that you get to spend time with your families.

Santa Hat Cake Pops

Hi, I thought I'd give you another quick and easy tutorial for

Santa Hat cake pops. I made some of these last week.

Very simple to make.

You need some mini-marshmallows like these:

White chocolate melts:

You also need red candy colouring,

cake pop mixture, white fondant (any brand will do)

and cake pop sticks.

Pick out the white marshmallows from the bag.

Cut them in half with scissors.

Shape your cake pop mixture into cone shapes and set aside to cool in the fridge. I used chocolate cake pop mixture but you can use whichever you fancy.

"Glue" the end of the stick into the cake pop by dipping it into melted chocolate and inserting in the base of the hat shape.

Melt the white chocolate and colour it with some red candy colouring, until you get a good colour.

Dip the cake pop into the melted chocolate.

Tap it gently to shale off excess chocolate. Hold it upside down so that the excess chocolate runs off the point.

This gives you a good thickness of chocolate at the point

and helps the marshmallow to stick.

Put a marshmallow half on the point of the hat.

Put aside to set.

Take a small piece of your fondant and shape it into a long roll. Press it onto the base of the hat as shown -

That's it! easy-peasy and looks good.

Reindeer cake pops tutorial

I've been making these reindeer cake pops every year for the past few years and they go down well with adults as well as kids. Our American friends use pretzels for antlers, but I don't really like pretzels so I came up with these licorice antlers which are easy to make.

1. CAKE POP BALLS

I use a chocolate mudcake mixed with chocolate ganache, but if you prefer a different flavour cake that's okay with me.

The cake can also be mixed with cream cheese or icing (frosting) if you prefer.

Prepare your cake pop mixture, I measure a tablespoonful and then roll into balls. Dip the end of a popstick into melted chocolate and insert into one end. Chill them for a wee while.

2. ANTLERS

This is something you can do whilst sitting in front

of the tv one evening.

You'll need a packet of this licorice and small sharp scissors:

You get 2 rolls in the packet and this will make lots of antlers.

Using scissors, begin by cutting a piece from the roll about 4.5 centimetres. Cut this piece lengthways into strips:

Cut each strip down the middle almost to the bottom, like these "Y" shapes here:

Cut a small piece from one side of the strip:

Using your index finger and thumb, roll up the shorter side so it looks like these (looks like a fishing rod):

Using the same method, roll up the other side

of the licorice strip:

Here's a close-up. You'll see that the lower side is beginning to uncurl. This happens with some of them - it depends upon how fresh the licorice is.

I quite like the variation in the antlers, with some of them coming unrolled as you can see in the next piccie - I did a few here with three rolled up parts to them ('cause I could!):

3. EYES

This is another job for the evening television viewing.

For this you'll need a packet of white ready-to-roll fondant

and a tub of these Rainbow choc chips

- find both things in the supermarket.

Roll tiny balls of white fondant and drop them onto a plate.

The rainbow choc chips have a pointed end - press a rainbow choc chip into the fondant ball pointed end first so that you get a nice round eye.

Here's my lovely blue and green eyes:

Rachel was helping me this day and here's her yellow!, orange!, purple!, and red! eyes!

Now I ask you, apart from when they are caught in headlights or have their photo taken with your mobile phone, when do reindeer have these strangely coloured eyes!!!???

Put the eyes in a container to harden up (eat all the yellow, red, orange and purple eyes that your friend has made!).

4. NOSES

Buy some m&ms and sort out the red ones. Easy-peasy.

5. PUTTING THE CAKE POPS TOGETHER

You'll need some chocolate Melts and a block of copha.

Melt the chocolate melts with about a quarter of the copha in the microwave or in a bowl over a pan of hot water.

Retrieve your cake pops from the fridge and have the antlers ready. You may like to pair up the antlers before you begin (not necessary, but appeals to those

who have an issue with symmetry).

Before you dip, press the top of the cake pop slightly with your thumb to flatten it a bit (easier for the antlers to stay on).

Dip the cake pop into the melted chocolate making

sure you cover the whole thing.

Tap your wrist to shake off the excess chocolate.

Place an antler on the top of the head leaving enough room for the other antler and gently push it into the chocolate.

Do the same for the other one.

Work quickly before the chocolate sets.

You may like to do all the antlers on all the heads before moving on to noses and eyes.

Add a dob of melted chocolate for the nose.

Push the m&m on making sure you have the side

without the letter "m" on it facing outwards.

You might like to pair up the eyes so that you

don't panic while the chocolate is setting.

Add two dobs of melted chocolate for the eyes.

Gently press the eyes onto the melted chocolate.

perhaps they have improved edible pens since then!

Well yesterday completely got away from me

and I didn't have time to post.
