Bangladesh: Woman pulled out alive after 18 Days under building collapse

Miraculous as it may sound, a woman has been rescued alive, almost unhurt, from inside the rubble of Rana Plaza Friday afternoon, the 17th day into the country’s worst collapse building.

Named Reshmi, the woman, who was found alive in the basement of the now flattened nine-storey building, was pulled out at 4:25pm.

Rescuers have given her water and biscuit, stopping use of any heavy machines to make sure that the survivor is not hurt anyway.

An ambulance has been kept waiting near the site to whisk her to hospital on her rescue.

Almost 408 hours into the collapse, a rescuer heard Reshma groaning around 3:15pm.

According to rescuers, they were preparing to break a large slab when the miracle happened.

“As we made an announcement before starting to break the slab asking whether there was anyone alive in there, we heard someone groan,” said a rescuer whose name could not be learnt immediately.

As they jubilant rescuers inquired about her condition, she said she was not much hurt, said the rescuers.

“Reshma,” she replied in a feeble voice, as they asked her name.

Al-Ghazali has sometimes been referred to by historians as the single most influential Muslim after the Islamic prophet Muhammad. Asad was a descendant of a long line of rabbis. However, his father was a barrister. He received a thorough religious education. He was proficient in Hebrew from an early age and was also familiar with Aramaic. He studied the Old Testament, as well as the text and commentaries of the Talmud, the Mishna and Gemara. Furthermore, he delved into the intricacies of Biblical exegesis, the Targum.

So, after abandoning university in Vienna, Asad (or Weiss, as he was then called) had drifted aimlessly around 1920s Germany, even working briefly for the expressionist film director Fritz Lang. By his own account after selling a jointly written film-script, he blew the windfall on a wild party at an expensive Berlin restaurant, in the spirit of the times. He got his first journalism published through sheer chutzpah while working as a telephone operator for an American news agency in Berlin. Using the simple expedient of ringing up her Berlin hotel room, he obtained an exclusive interview with the visiting wife of the Russian author Maxim Gorky, and the story was taken up by his employers.

Weiss later moved to the British Mandate of Palestine, staying in Jerusalem at the house of an uncle, the psychoanalyst Dorian Weiss. He picked up work as a stringer for the Frankfurter Zeitung, selling articles on a freelance basis. His pieces were noteworthy for their understanding of Arab fears and grievances against the Zionist project. Eventually contracted as a full-time foreign correspondent for the paper, his assignments led him to an ever deepening engagement with Islam, which after much thought led to his religious conversion in 1926. He spoke of Islam thus:

His travels and sojourns through Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Iran (he wrote many insightful articles on Shiism), and also Afghanistan and the southern Soviet Republics, were viewed with great suspicion by the Colonial Powers. One English diplomat in Saudi Arabia described him in a report as a "Bolshevik", and it is true that he took a close interest in the many liberation movements that were active at this time with the aim of freeing Muslim lands from colonial rule. He ended up in India where he met and worked alongside Muhammad Iqbal, the poet-philosopher, who had proposed the idea of an independent Muslim state in India, which later became Pakistan.

During WWII he was interned there by the British as an enemy alien. His parents meanwhile, were murdered by the Nazis in the Holocaust. Because of his out-spoken support for the Pakistan Movement, after Independence and the Partition of 1947, Asad was appointed Pakistani ambassador to the United Nations[dubious – discuss], as well as working with the Pakistani Foreign Ministry from 1949 till the early 1950s.[dubious – discuss] He is credited with drafting the Objectives Resolution, which became the Preamble to the Constitution of Pakistan.[dubious – discuss] Towards the end of his life, disturbed by the growing fanaticism of his fellow Muslims, he moved to Spain and lived there with his second wife, the Muslim convert Paola Hameeda Asad, until his death in 1992. He was buried in the muslim cemetery of Granada.

Asad wrote several books, and a biography of his early life has been published in German, Leopold Weiss alias Muhammad Asad. Von Galizien nach Arabien 1900-1927 by Gunther Windhager (Bohlau Verlag 2002}. Weiss's own version of this period is Road to Mecca, an account of his Middle Eastern travels and his conversion, as well as his thoughts on the growing Zionist movement.

Lady Gaga has cancelled a concert in the Indonesian

Lady Gaga has cancelled a concert in the Indonesian capital Jakarta, citing security concerns after protests by religious groups.

The singer said she was "devastated" at the decision.

Police in Indonesia had refused to issue a permit for the US pop star after Islamic groups objected to her show, claiming it was too vulgar.

The hardline Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) had threatened to try to stop Lady Gaga getting off the plane.

Indonesia is officially secular but has more Muslims than any other country.

More than 50,000 tickets had been sold for the 3 June event. Promoters said they would offer refunds.

Police had said they would only issue permits for the concert - part of Gaga's Born This Way Ball concept tour - if the flamboyant singer agreed to tone things down. Instead, her management pulled the plug on the show.

'Nothing holy about hatred'

"Lady Gaga's management has considered the situation minute to minute, and with threats if the concert goes ahead, Lady Gaga's side is calling off the concert," Minola Sebayang, lawyer for promoters Big Daddy, told reporters.

"This is not only about Lady Gaga's security, but extends to those who will be watching her."

Big Daddy President Michael Rusli said: "I think everyone including the government itself would have hoped that the show would go on. But of course along the way we have to review all the planning and we have to be mindful of what is happening in the media, what is happening in Indonesia itself."

Just hours before the announcement, Lady Gaga wrote on her Twitter account: "There is nothing holy about hatred."

The Islamist FPI had threatened violence if the concert went ahead, calling Lady Gaga a "devil's messenger" who wears only a "bra and panties".

Habib Salim Alatas, the group's FPI Jakarta chairman, said the cancellation was "good news" for Indonesia's Muslims.

"FPI is grateful that she has decided not to come. Indonesians will be protected from sin brought about by this Mother Monster, the destroyer of morals," he told AFP news agency.

He added: "Lady Gaga fans, stop complaining. Repent and stop worshipping the devil. Do you want your lives taken away by God as infidels?"

Indonesia's conservative Religious Affairs Minister, Suryadharma Ali, also welcomed the cancellation.

"I strongly believe this cancellation will benefit the country," he said.

"Indonesians need entertainment and art which have moral values."

Following the cancellation, Lady Gaga took to Twitter again to apologise.

"We had to cancel the concert in Indonesia," she said. "I'm so very sorry to the fans and just as devastated as you, if not more. You are everything to me."

This is not the first time that the 26-year-old performer has faced objections during her Asian tour.

Her concert in South Korea in April was made an adults-only event following protests from Christian groups.

Protests also took place in the Philippines, with Christian groups accusing her of being blasphemous.

She is scheduled to play three shows in Singapore this week before moving on to New Zealand and Australia.

Hundreds of Rohingya refugees reach Langkawi

A group of about 450 Rohingya Muslims from Burma have arrived on Malaysia's Langkawi island after a two-week boat journey, officials say.

It is believed to be one of the largest groups of Rohingya migrants to have arrived in Malaysia this year.

One man is reported to have drowned trying to swim ashore. The others have been taken to a detention centre.

Many Rohingyas have fled Burma's Rakhine state as deadly clashes flared earlier this year.

But tens of thousands have fled persecution over the last few decades. Many go to Bangladesh and others make the perilous boat journey from there to Malaysia.

Dozens are feared to have perished in two separate incidents earlier this year when boats carrying hundreds of Rohingyas capsized in the Bay of Bengal and off the Bangladeshi coast.

It is unclear if this group has come directly from Burma or via Bangladesh.

The United Nations refugee agency says there are about 25,000 Rohingyas registered in Malaysia.

The UN describes Rohingyas as a persecuted religious and linguistic minority from western Burma.

The Burmese government, on the other hand, considers them as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and they remain stateless migrants in Bangladesh and Malaysia.
