The Doctors Gave Me a Death Sentence. Thirty Years Later, I Drove Away in an RV.

More than thirty years ago, I was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. I was not supposed to be here. I have been quietly aware of that fact every single day since — and I have not always known what to do with it.

For most of those years, I did what I knew. I ran a gallery on the Palm Beaches. I built something real, something lasting, a place where art found its way onto walls and into lives. It was a good life. A full one. But there is a particular kind of restlessness that comes with survival — a knowledge that time is not abstract, that the road does not wait, that at some point you have to stop preparing to live and simply go.

So I did. I sold the gallery. I loaded up a 28-foot RV. I brought my dog, Bella. And I drove west.

What followed was not a bucket list. It was something quieter and stranger and more honest than that. Back roads through small towns. National parks at dawn. Deserts that made me feel very small and very alive at the same time. Campgrounds where I met people whose names I still remember. Coastlines I had no words for until I sat with them long enough to find some.

I moved slowly. Attentively. Without urgency — which, for someone who spent three decades running a business, was its own kind of revolution.

Between Storms and Sunrises is the book that came out of that journey. It is a memoir about America as much as it is about me — about what you see when you leave the interstate and take the back roads, about aging and memory and the long aftermath of survival. About what it means to travel not as escape, but as presence.

Part One — the first in a four-book USA Tour series — is available now on Amazon Kindle. I want to be completely honest with you about what it is: a first draft. The words came before the polish, written close to the road, close to the experience. They are real in a way that revision sometimes smooths away.

Tell us about yourself and what you do for a living?
First and foremost, I love all things art and culture related as much as I love my hometown. I have been a visual artist all my life (activistartista.com). I’m a bit hyper indulgent of all things bright and beautiful. I have enjoyed having tandem careers in the world of fashion as a designer, in television as a talk show host, and even as a model when I was younger. Today I have had the privilege and honor to maintain a curatorial practice at The Box Gallery (TheBoxGallery.info) dedicated to providing culturally relevant information, access, and art works that reflect current movements and practices in the arts to visitors and collectors. Two of my most treasured compliments have been receiving a Muse Award for Cultural Leadership, and a recent Proclamation dedicating June 7th as Rolando Chang Barrero Day in Palm Beach County. Basically, like many of us in The Palm Beaches, what I really do for a living is to provide joy in the arts, embrace my role as cultural ambassador, and I provide a warm welcome to our guests, clients, and visitors to Palm Beach everyday. I love introducing people to paradise.
How long have you been living in The Palm Beaches, and what influenced your decision to move here?
I am a Florida native, although because of my career and studies I have had the pleasure to live and work throughout the country. After getting my degree from The School of the Art Institute in 1991 I couldn’t wait to return to paradise, so when I was offered a position as interim galleries director in the cultural affairs department at Miami Dade College (mdc.edu) I accepted it without hesitation. After all, it’s home. I get a kick knowing that I get to live and work where so many Americans, Europeans, and Latin Americans come to vacation. I’m never really surprised when any of our visitors decide stay.
What are your favorite places to go for cocktails and/or dinner?
We have hundreds of outstanding places to drink and dine, most of which I have visited and enjoyed. While I cook really well, I do love to go out a lot and I also spend a lot of time traveling. Being on the road I know that my first question is always, “Where is the best places for breakfast, lunch, and dinner?” So, friends ask me what my favorite places are I’ll let them that I have to start my day at one of four places: San Ambroeus (santambroeus.com), Tulipan Cafe and Bakery (tulipanbakery.com), Dontee’s Diner (donteesdinerfl.com), and of course Green’s Luncheonette (greenspb.com/restaurant). For lunch on the run there’s nothing more convenient than The Restaurant at The Norton Museum (norton.org/TheRestaurant) or, Serenity Garden Teahouse (serenitygardentea.com) tucked away on 316 Vallette Way between The Box Gallery and The Norton Museum. As for dinner, I have too many favorites! I would have to know what your budget is because I have favorites all over the board from fine dinning restaurants like Café Boulud (cafeboulud.com/palmbeach) to Taqueria Guerrero for truly authentic Mexican food (lataqueriaguerrero.com) or, Cuban hotspot Don Ramon (donramonrestaurant.com).

What cultural attractions or events are a must see for visitors?
The Palm Beaches is a exceptional place to live or visit, with thousands of places to explore and hundreds of year-round events to enjoy! The Palm Beaches is home to some of the best public art programs and projects that are outstanding. From The City Of Boynton Beach’s Boynton Arts (boynton-beach.org/public-art) to West Palm’s ArtLife (wpb.org/our-city/artlife-wpb) I can spend an afternoon walking around surrounded by beautiful art. Aside from my passion for art I love science and nature, and here in the Palm Beaches we offers a lot of variety. The Cox Science Center and Aquarium (coxsciencecenter.org) is a must see, touch, and experience not to miss. With many interactive installations designed with the latest cutting edge animatronics, I have spent hours there. Another favorite pastime is kayaking, and I always go to John D. MacArthur Beach State Park (macarthurbeach.org) to relax and just enjoy being on the water and watching the beautiful scenery as I paddle slowly along the trails. After spending the day outdoors, there’s nothing better that catching a show at one of our performing arts centers or theaters. A friend is coming to The Palm Beaches for the first time. Please describe the perfect weekend.
I know it’s going to be a perfect weekend when the first thing my friend says, “I packed sunscreen, boat shoes, and flip-flops. I want to spend the next couple of days outdoors!” Clearly we are going to enjoy the warm water and the absolutely great weather that is unique to The Palm Beaches. On the agenda there will be swimming in Lake Worth Beach (thepalmbeaches.com/explore-cities/lake-worth-beach), canoeing at Riverbend Park (discover.pbcgov.org/parks/Locations/Riverbend.aspx), parasailing on Singer Island (adventurews.com/activities/parasailing) .and before heading home, a sunset cruise is a must (getwetwatersports.com) .
What are the best places to truly enjoy the natural beauty of the area?
We are basically surrounded by water and wetlands providing us with so many enjoyable options from a stroll through the Wakodahatchee Wetlands (discover.pbcgov.org/waterutilities/Pages/Wetlands.aspx) to guided tours on kayaks at Grassy Waters Preserve (wpb.org/government/public-utilities/grassy-waters-preserve/plan-your-visit). Two of my favorites are John D. MacArthur Beach State Park (macarthurbeach.org) and Riverbend Park (discover.pbcgov.org/parks/Pages/Riverbend.aspx).
What is your favorite time of year in The Palm Beaches and why?
I really don’t have a favorite time. I enjoy living here all year long.
What locally made product would you suggest visitors bring back for their friends or family?
Locally grown, Locally raised! Locally made! We have some of the best products and produce to bring home to family and friends. You can enjoy them at most of our restaurants. The best place to find out how to visit and pick up a few delicious local gifts is by contacting The Florida Sugar Cane League (floridasugarcaneleague.org).

Red panel (LIFE) is of Michael Brown, who before his tragic death in 2008, Michael Brown owned #WestPalmBeach landmark H.G. Roosters . For years, Roosters was one of the only local gathering places of people in the #LGBTQ community. Michael was a #philanthropist who personally saved the lives of countless people, and traveled the world with the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt to educate others about the spread of #HIVAIDS. His NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt Panel is on permanent display at Compass Community Center. May he rest in peace and in our hearts.�.�

Orange panel (Healing) is of Charles Capers/Melissa St John our community's iconic drag queen. Charles was interviewed as part of the Compass/Palm Beach Dramaworks #LegacyProject in 2018, and has worked tirelessly for many years to raise money and awareness to help those living with HIV/AIDS. In the 1980 and 90s she and others ran Mother's Cupboard a food pantry for gays and lesbians surviving with the virus, which fed thousands of people with very little public support.��

Yellow panel (SUNLIGHT) is of Ruthie Berman and Connie Kurtz ( Ruth Berman ) who have been instrumental in fighting for LGBTQ rights for decades. Their pioneering fight for equality started in the New York public school system, and culminated with the re-introduction of the #RuthieandConnieLGBTElderAmericansActBill in the U.S. House of Representatives in #March2019: https\://www.congress.gov/…/115th-con…/house-bill/4222/titles. Connie passed away in May of 2018 but lives on in the enthusiasm and energy Ruthie continues to bring to LGBTQ issues in #PalmBeachCounty.
Green panel (NATURE) is of Carole Bloom Benowitz our president and founder of PFLAG - Palm Beach County. Carole has dedicated her life to raising awareness and acceptance of LGBTQ people, especially with their families. She has helped to start #PFLAGchapters in other communities as well, driving hundreds of miles a week to lead the fledgling groups. Carole, a recipient of Compass’ prestigious #MichaelBrownMemorialFacesoftheCommunityAward in 2018, is a dear #ally and friend.

Blue panel (HARMONY/PEACE) is of Andy Amoroso, a local business owner, Vice Mayor of Lake Worth Beach and a member of the community who was instrumental in Compass’ move to Lake Worth, and the long standing relationship Compass shares with the City of Lake Worth Beach. Andy is the first openly gay city commissioner in Lake Worth.

Purple panel (SPIRIT) is of Jazz Jennings, a resident of #SouthFlorida, is a former #PalmBeachPrideGrandMarshal and a tireless #advocate for #transgender equality and visibility. Her show on TLC, “ I Am Jazz ” has brought awareness of trans issues to millions of Americans.

Rolando Barrero is the owner of the Box Gallery in West Palm Beach. He and his Gallery have been recognized as the Best Artist and Best Gallery of 2022. This is Barrero’s second year being selected as Best Artist. Best Gallery won in a reader’s choice category.

Of his artistry, Barrero said, “I try to create culturally relevant and thought-provoking work without compromise.” His latest piece, “The Family,” was recently installed as a public art piece at the Opportunity Early Childhood Education & Family Center in West Palm Beach.

“The Box Gallery will continue to maintain its reputation as a First Amendment space where all voices can be amplified through the arts,” Barrero said of his gallery. Barrero cultivates diverse styles of art and does not prioritize any one style over another.

“All art is welcome here,” he said.

Rolando Chang Barrero has done a lot for Palm Beach County, so perhaps that’s why readers voted him as the Best LGBT Activist, Best Artist, and his art gallery in West Palm Beach won for Best Art Gallery.

Executive Director of Compass, Julie Seaver won this category so many times we decided to rename it LGBT Activist (NOT Named Julie Seaver), with her blessing!

Chang Barrero created the Pajaro Pride Wall Project, an auction that has over 100 artists, friends, allies, and community leaders creating art to sell.

“ I’m very honored to be included on this list among so many friends and associates,” Chang Barrero said. “It’s a great honor to be recognized by our community and I am very grateful. I’m very happy to be able to continue to serve my community.”

He has been creating art for over 40 years, according to his bio. He is a multimedia artist with a portfolio including fashion design, film, painting, acting, and more. His activism and his art are often intertwined, which is why the exhibits that his art gallery hosts feature topics that range from human rights to personal identity. Barrero has built a gallery in which it's easy to get lost, yet somehow find a piece of yourself along the way.

"For years we have been discussing and planning this exhibition," says owner and curator of The Box Gallery, Rolando Chang Barrero. "It's more than just an exhibition, it's an experience!"

The already sold out exhibition had to add a few more dates after over-riding the event's ticketing program to allow for the overwhelming response for the opening reception. Calls and visits to the gallery from amounts to a who's who list from South Florida, New York, and Los Angels guests has been coming in for weeks now, a great sign that people are excited to see the exhibition and to get meet Gartel.

The Box Gallery has placed giant vinyls of Gartel's exhibition poster on the front windows of the gallery in preparation for Saturday's event and added two walls inside to accommodate the numerous works included in the exhibit.

Laurence Gartel, known as the Father of Digital Art has been pioneering the Computer aesthetic for over 45-years. It has been a global journey showing the world a new way to communicate. Gartel and his new visual language sparked interest delivering the keynote speech at the First Pan Pacific Computer Conference in Melbourne, Australia. His arrival triggered much anticipated excitement landing him on the front page of The Australian newspaper in 1985. This was a decade after Gartel discovered analog system computers working with video guru Nam June Paik at Media Study/Buffalo in upstate New York.

Cultural Council opens show in Lake Worth Beach

Paintings by artist Rolando Chang Barrero hang in the Being Heard, Being Seen art exhibit by local artists who identify themselves as LGBTQ+ at the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County in downtown Lake Worth Beach, Fla., on Wednesday, March 16, 2022.

The “Being Heard, Being Seen” art exhibit, a celebration of self-identity and expression by local artists who identify as LGBTQ+, is on display through April 9 at the Cultural Council for Palm Beach County.

A 7-foot figure offering masks, interactive poetry and paintings covered with shiny, smooth resin are part of the exhibit that explores the rights, representation and experiences of the LGBTQ+ community.

“The goal of this exhibition is to encourage everyone to be their authentic selves, to champion understanding, compassion and important conversations, and to create a safe space where everyone feels heard and seen for who they are — without question or compromise. When we do that, we make room for real impact,” said Dave Lawrence, the Cultural Council president and chief executive officer.

COVID-19 has been a powerful influence in the artwork, said Jessica Ransom, director of Artist Services. Solitude, kindness and people masking their feelings during the outbreak are vividly shown in the artwork, she said.

“We have amazing artists in our community. They are putting their hearts and beings into their work,” said Ransom.

Viewers can interact with a poetry exhibit by Stacie M. Kiner and her partner Dianna I. Rosenberg. After reading the poetry, viewers are invited to write down and submit their reactions on sheets of paper.

“I want everyone to have their basic needs met,” wrote one viewer.

An exhibit by Rolando Chang Barrero, founder of the Box Gallery in West Palm Beach, is a series of acrylics showing about 50 faces lined up on the wall. Colorful, mysterious and expressive, they show joy, hope, surprise, love, sadness and fear.

The colors do not match the expressions. A fearful face is painted bright orange connoting happiness. A grinning, eyebrow-raised face is grayish, reflecting sadness.

“That’s where the mask comes in. Many of us were wearing masks to the world during the pandemic, hiding our real emotions,” said Ransom.- continue reading

Hispanic, Latinx Americans push back against generalizations

Some leaders are more hesitant to use "Latinx" because they say it's used to paint people with Spanish-speaking ancestry with too broad a brush — a criticism often launched at media organizations, universities, and governments that refer to Hispanic people and Spanish speakers as if they are a monolithic group.

"Latinx is an attempt by leftists to rework our home language," said Rolando Chang Barrero, a Cuban LGBTQ+ community organizer, art gallery owner and member of the Palm Beach County Democratic Caucus.

"Classifying us as Latinx or even as Hispanic is a misnomer that does not represent the 33 foreign countries represented in my community. Each country is as nuanced as the United States," Barrero added.

Pan-ethnic labels used to describe people from Spanish-speaking countries are not an invention of the 21st century, Barrero said.

The 1980 U.S. Census was the first decennial count to ask respondents if they were "Hispanic." Previously, the Census attempted to quantify people by asking if they had Spanish surnames or whether they spoke Spanish at home.

In 2020, the Census asked respondents whether they were of "Hispanic, Latino or Spanish origin." The question included a space to specify a person's country of ethnic origin.

But even those terms are nuanced.

Hispanic origin refers to any person whose family comes from a Spanish-speaking country, whereas Latino or Latina refers to a person whose family comes from a Latin American country in Central or South America or the Caribbean.

Barrero said the introduction of umbrella terms like Hispanic and Latinx lead to generalizations about people who hail from Spanish-speaking countries instead of a greater understanding of their cultures and traditions.

"They’re using the word like 'the Hispanic market' and '(the) Hispanic voting block.' That has caused a lot of interference in understanding who we are as a people," Barrero said. "We share a language, but that’s where it begins and where it ends."

Barrero, a gay person who uses both he/him and ze/zir pronouns, said while he takes issue with non-Hispanic people using Latinx to describe many communities all together, people who are Hispanic and nonbinary or transgender should feel supported when they use it.

"I completely respect someone's pronouns and their identity, but we should not (all) fall under that label." Barrero said. "We have many nuanced people in our community and that hasn't reached the mainstream."

Barrero and others are pushing for an understanding of "intersectionality" — a respect for all of a person's identities when considering their life experience — in Hispanic and Latin American communities.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. —

While Cubans and other Hispanics continue to struggle for equality, a West Palm Beach artist is at the root of that crusade. His art may make you think twice – whether it’s in a subliminal message or one of his more controversial exhibits.

Inside The Box Gallery in West Palm Beach, curator Rolando Chang Barrero, also known as “The Bird Man,” creates his next piece.He’s not only an artist but an activist.

“It’s a powerful means of communication,” Barrero said. “Whether it deals with Cuba, homosexuality, because I am gay, the artwork also stems from that larger-than-life image. So, it hits you.”

Rolando uses current headlines and historical events as his influence. He exposes problems and gives them a silent voice of expression.

“We’ve taken the time to deal with social issues, which includes race and ethnicity,” Rolando said.

Whether it’s the 2018 Parkland school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School or showcasing other artists, like Dominic Esposito’s “The Opioid Spoon Project,” Rolando said he knows what it’s like to struggle growing up in Miami.

His parents are from Cuba and sought political asylum in the United States.

“It was the '60s, and there was no Hispanics,” Rolando said. “And racism was at its peak. Life changed in kindergarten. We had to go out and mix with other kids. We were the ones that stood out. It wasn’t once or twice that we would come home beat up. That was a sign of the times in this country.”

He said inequality is still rampant, but he uses it to promote positive change in the community.

Rolando said it’s important to value yourself, adding that fighting for that value is the only way Hispanics will be on an equal playing field.

Rolando said he has always drawn outside the lines – using art to make people think outside the box, which he said he wants to instill in young artists.

“As soon as they put a drawing pencil to paper or a brush to a canvas, that’s a powerful medium. And if you’re going to paint flowers, make sure it’s the most beautiful flower in the world and that it resonates with the broadest amount of people," he said.

West Palm Beach, FL 01-22-2021--Domenic Esposito will be showing his new series of artwork entitled Blank Slate, along with select pieces of his signature work addressing the Opioid Crisis, at the socially conscious Box Gallery in West Palm Beach's “Cultural Corridor.”
The exhibit will be curated by The Box Gallery owner and curator Rolando Chang Barrero.

Esposito's new series titled "Blank Slate" represents the artist's reflections upon current times and the era of fear, depression, and loneliness experienced in the "new normal." Esposito explores the isolation of those living with mental illness and those suffering from substance abuse whose challenges have been exacerbated and laid bare.
All the figures depicted in Blank Slate are hooded; their faces are either totally or partially hidden from view. Many pieces contrast bronze patinas with painted backgrounds illuminating the hooded figures' hidden, inner world, alluding to the wearer's identity. Through the combination of two and three-dimensional media, the artworks push the hooded subject into our visceral space creating conflict between the figure's desire to be hidden and the viewer's own incompatible impulses to ignore, expose and understand.

The Blank Slate Exhibition will open with a reception on on March 6th and continue through March 29, 2021. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Saturday 11-6 p.m. or by appointment.
