Causing about 2,200-deaths a day, cardiovascular disease continues to be a major killer in the United States, and Americans are more obese and spending more money on treatment of the disease than ever before, according to the AHA’s 2012 “Heart Disease and Stroke Statistical Survey.” This can stop now.

“Through education, community, and action, we can improve our own quality of life and the quality of life for our family, friends, and neighbors. I began my Healthy Heart Challenge to bring support and initiative to a largely preventable issue plaguing our country,” says Dr. Goldberg.

Improving your cardiovascular health can seem like a difficult goal, but by making simple lifestyle changes is the first step toward big change. To follow are the top five things you must do to improve your heart health:

1. Quit Smoking: Smoking triples the risk of heart disease.

2. Reduce your salt intake: Cutting salt intake in half would save more than a million people from hypertension

3. Exercise: Maintain three hours a week of aerobic exercise and aim to take 10,000 steps a day.

4. Heart Check-Up: The only way to know if you’re at risk is to have a good heart to hear you’re your doctor. Discuss your family history, your lifestyle and have your blood pressure taken. Lab tests for cholesterol and glucose are important as well; your doctor will determine if you need additional tests.

5. Aspirin: Discuss with your doctor if Aspirin will benefit you. Research shows that an aspirin a day doesn’t prevent a first heart attack in everyone. Age and other risk factors determines

How Can Pregnant Women Avoid Dangerous Everyday Chemicals?

Pregnant women are trying to be healthier. Many take all the right steps to promote the birth of a healthy baby, including eating right, taking vitamins and eliminating alcohol and nicotine from their lives.
Unfortunately, all those efforts may be for naught if they are still being exposed to unseen chemicals in their daily lives. Dr. Doris Rapp, an experienced physician and expert on all the hidden household and environmental hazards, wants women to know about the many insidious and dangerous threats to their unborn babies. The harmful exposures can cause serious harm and damaging birth defects to babies in the womb, and they are right under our noses.
“One of the most dangerous groups of chemicals to pregnant women is known as PCBs,” said Rapp, author of 32 Tips That Could Save Your Life. “PCB stands for polychlorinated biphenyls, and they are commonly used in industrial pesticides. While they may not be in your house, they may exist in your office, your water or your food, especially if you live near the Great Lakes or consume seafood caught there. These chemicals pass through the placenta into the unborn, and some exposures have been known to cause devastating birth defects. These chemicals have also been found in the breast milk of women.”
According to Rapp, some of the dangers of these pesticides include, but are not limited to:

• Lower birth weight
• Smaller head size and developmental delays
• Movement, mental, and behavioral problems
• Increased or decreased activity levels
• Slowed thought processing and “less bright” appearance
• Lower reaction times
• Compromised nervous systems

“Moreover, a group of pesticides known as organophosphates also poses a high risk for pregnant women,” Rapp added.
“These include Bisphenol-A and phthalates,” she said. “They are derived from World War II nerve agents and are highly toxic. Even at low levels, organophosphates can be toxic to the developing brain, and studies show that they can affect brain and reproductive development in unborn animals. While most pesticides categorized as organophosphates have been banned for household use, they are still permitted for commercial use, including in fumigation for mosquitoes. Malathion, a common toxic organophosphate, is still allowed for use as an industrial and household insecticide. In the US, approximately 15 million pounds of Malathion are used each year by the government, as well as by businesses and homeowners.”
Her advice for women is to do all they can to avoid contact with these chemicals, starting before conception.
“Stay as far away as possible from pesticide-treated areas,” Rapp said. “Do not eat pesticide-laden food or any fish from the Great Lakes. Try to eat only organic foods. Further, if your job requires you to be in contact with any chemicals or pesticides, insist that other tasks be given to you for the duration of your pregnancy. Half the battle is knowing these dangers exist, but the other half is being informed and conscientious enough to be able to avoid contact with these dangerous and toxic agents.”

• Pelvic rest sounds easy, but it isn’t. It’s not fun being forced to become a nun, so don’t. There are still ways to enjoy intimacy; you just need to get creative. Think high school – remember how much fun necking was? Try body oil, a massage … whipped cream? Sexy lingerie is still hot, even if you’re pregnant. Flaunt your new assets -- they surely went up a cup size or two.

• Educate yourself about your situation. Don’t go reading about every other possible scenario out there; you don’t need to worry about problems that aren’t a likely issue for you.

• Ask and you shall receive. It may sometimes feel as though people have forgotten about you, but the reality is they’re busy and they have no idea what’s it’s like for you. If you want company, reach out and invite someone over.

“I know it’s tough to be going through a high-risk pregnancy and living in fear every day,” Whitehead says. “Though this will be the toughest time of your life, many of us have been through it and now have our children. You can, too.“Keep your chin up and keep hoping. Healthy babies are born every day to families who’ve walked the same path.”

Want to know how my surgical consult went?

There is some good news and there is some bad news. I feel it's mostly good, since I'm beginning to get somewhere, but I am still frustrated by the whole process.

I do NOT have a sports hernia. YAY! The surgeon did an extensive exam with some physical tests for me to complete that he said would clearly show a hernia in my abdomen because my muscle tone is so good. Pretty much, if a hernia was present anywhere on my abdomen it would be so obvious when I was contracting my muscles that he'd be able to stick his finger in it. GROSS!!!

He did, however, tell me that I do have a moderate diastasis (when your abs are split after carrying babies), but my membranes look great. This is actually wonderful news because it basically means that with the correct abdominal exercises I can pull my abs back together and look like a rockstar once again. To be honest with you, this was my biggest concern because I never even thought of the real {most likely} issue. I thought, after having my CT scan and Ultrasounds done, that I must have a severe diastasis and would need corrective surgery because my membranes must also be torn. It would account for the pain I have during and after doing any sort of exercise or walking, or just anything physical.

Unfortunately, it's looking like this is not the culprit. Much to my dismay...

See the Ultrasounds showed that I no longer have SCARRING in my abdomen where my Buffalo OB could not reach during my Cesarean. It seems that those pockets of scar tissue have gone away, and in there place are cysts. ::insert profanities here::

The obvious cysts, that were specifically checked for, are on my Ovaries. In my abdomen, where I've been complaining of extreme pain, my surgeon felt something "hard" and noted that I had obvious discomfort during the exam. Which is most likely Endometriosis.

I am not happy, but I'm also happy. I knew this would probably happen someday, but I'm not ready. However, a surgery recovery will be better when I'm young. Also, we're not planning on having any more children so I won't be sad about losing at least one Ovary.

So that's all for now, I guess. I have another surgical consult on the 31, with an OB. My surgeon says that this OB is great and will take care of me. I sure hope so!

I also find that there are a few companies that provide easy mixes for meal adaptations, and I love experimenting!

GF Peppermint Shortbread Cookies

Ingredients:

1 bag Bob's Red Mill Gluten Free Shortbread Cookie Mix

1 egg yolk

1 cup water

1.5 sticks unsalted butter

1 cup crushed candy canes or peppermint candies

Directions:

1) Crush candy canes of peppermint candies using a food processor. Set aside for later.

2) Follow exact directions on Bob's Red Mill package

3) Kneed crushed candies into the dough and roll out dough as instructed on the package.

4) Bake for 15 minutes.

I have a surgical consult on Tuesday

I've been having some pretty terrible chronic pain, and the better part of the last month or so has been spent with doctors, nurses, and specialists just trying to figure out what's wrong with me. Initially, my PCP and I suspected the pain was being caused by a hernia, since I appeared to have a small bulge in my abdomen and that area is bloated and very sensitive.

I had a CT scan last Monday and the results show something else, so my PCP is sending me to a surgeon to discuss the results and surgery. My brother reviewed the results as well, he's a physician, and he agrees with this sequence of events.

I'll keep everything posted, but it's starting to sound like I'll be able to work out, have fun, and enjoy my life again very soon!

Little Rocker NEWS - this is good...really really good!

Little Rocker has a VSD, I don't know if we've talked about this before but he does. Now you know! He's had it since birth, and it's been monitored by one of the best pediatric cardiologists in Buffalo for the past two years.

Due to its size, his Buffalo Cardiologist was concerned that it may not close up by the time he was 18 months, which is usual for approximately 80% of VSDs. Unfortunately, it did NOT close up by that time but his Cardiologist decided that we should wait a bit longer before discussing the possibility of surgery since Little Rocker had been sick as a baby. His C. diff caused a lot of stunted growth, "failure to thrive" was thrown around, gastrointestinal issues, so Little Rocker's Buffalo Cardiologist wanted to wait things out until Little Rocker was a bit older to be sure it wouldn't close on its own.

RJ and I were VERY nervous to find out at his recent pediatric appointment that the VSD was still present. He was referred to one of the best cardiologists in our area and the appointment was last week.

Well, GUESS WHAT?!?!?!?!

His VSD is still there, but it seems that his body is finally thriving completely since we figured out that he had Celiacs and started giving him an exclusively gluten free diet He's gaining weight, he's growing taller, annnnnnd his VSD has started to close up!!

It looks like Little Rocker's body is finally back on track and healing itself successfully. Thank you, Lord, for answering our prayers! One of my worst fears lately has been the possibility of my sweet boy having heart surgery.

It's a GREAT day!

Cornucopia, WI—Over the holidays, the United States Department of Agriculture announced its approval of a novel strain of genetically engineered corn, developed by Monsanto, purportedly being “drought tolerant.”

Despite receiving nearly 45,000 public comments in opposition to this particular genetically engineered (GE) corn variety (and only 23 comments in favor), the Obama administration gave Monsanto the green light to release its newest GE corn variety freely into the environment and American food supply, without any governmental oversight or safety tracking.

“President Obama and Secretary of Agriculture Vilsack just sent a clear message to the American public that they do not care about our concerns with genetically engineered food and their questionable safety, adverse environmental impacts, and detrimental effects on farmers, especially organic farmers,” says Mark A. Kastel, Senior Farm Policy Analyst with The Cornucopia Institute.

“This is just the latest in a string of approvals of genetically engineered crops, and it is clear that despite campaign promises of change from Obama, he has not had the courage to stand strong against the powerful agribusiness and biotechnology lobbies,” Kastel added.

In addition to its announcement approving Monsanto’s newest GE corn variety, the USDA also opened a 60-day public comment period for two additional petitions – one for Monsanto’s GE soybean containing higher levels of an omega-3 fatty acid, that does not naturally occur in soybeans, and the other from Dow AgroSciences for corn that has been genetically engineered to better resist the poisonous herbicide 2,4-D.

While the USDA attempts to assure the public that 2,4-D is safe, scientists have raised serious concerns about the safety of this herbicide, which was used as a key ingredient in “Agent Orange,” used to defoliate forests and croplands in the Vietnam War.

2,4-D is a chlorophenoxy herbicide, and scientists around the world have reported increased cancer risks in association with its use, especially for soft tissue sarcoma and malignant lymphoma. Four separate studies in the United States reported an association with chlorophenoxy herbicide use and non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

"The concern is that, just like Monsanto's genetically engineered corn that is resistant to RoundUp™ (glyphosate) herbicide, the approval of a cultivar resistant to 2,4-D will cause an exponential increase in the use of this toxic agrichemical," Kastel stated.

Research by the EPA found that babies born in counties with high rates of 2,4-D application to farm fields were significantly more likely to be born with birth defects of the respiratory and circulatory systems, as well as defects of the musculoskeletal system like clubfoot, fused digits and extra digits. These birth defects were 60% to 90% more likely in counties with higher 2,4-D application rates.

The results also showed a higher likelihood of birth defects in babies conceived in the spring, when herbicide application rates peak.

In its petition, Dow AgroSciences states that 2,4-D is increasingly important for chemical farmers because of the presence of weeds that have developed resistance to glyphosate, as a result of the widespread use of Monsanto’s genetically engineered glyphosate-resistant crops.

When Monsanto introduced glyphosate, it was touted as a safer and less toxic alternative to herbicides like 2,4-D. Now, an emerging body of scientific literature is raising serious concerns about the safety of glyphosate as well.

“The concern that the use of GE crops, which are resistant to particular herbicides, leads to the creation of 'superweeds' is now shown to be valid and serious, as even the chemical companies now recognize and admit this is a problem,” says Kastel.

“In 2012 the USDA is proposing approving a new GE corn variety that is resistant to a different toxic herbicide, escalating the toxic treadmill in chemical-dependent agriculture,” said Jay Feldman, Executive Director of Beyond Pesticides. “This is nothing more than a band-aid solution to a serious problem, and will only give rise to more superweeds, more herbicide pollution in our environment, more herbicide poisoning, while likely leading to the need for even more toxic herbicides a couple of years down the line. This foolish circle has to end,” Feldman said.

Farm research groups like The Cornucopia Institute are also concerned with the impact of genetically engineered crops on organic farmers, whose organic crops are already at risk of contamination with Monsanto’s unnatural DNA, from pollen drift.

In its Environmental Assessment of the “drought tolerant” Monsanto corn, the USDA conceded that gene flow of corn pollen is likely to occur. It is well-established that corn pollen travels, and pollen from genetically engineered plants will contaminate natural corn plants.

“The irony, of course, is that organic fields and crops are much more drought tolerant, because common sense and field trials show healthy and biologically active organic soil retains moisture much better than tired and depleted soil on conventional monoculture farms, and organic crops are healthier and more robust than conventional crops,” said Charlotte Vallaeys, a researcher at Cornucopia.

“But Monsanto cannot profit from healthy soil and healthy organic crops, while they can profit from genetically engineering, patenting, and owning new life forms,” Vallaeys continued. “It’s unfortunate that the Obama administration is equally misguided by supporting Monsanto and Dow’s petitions and ignoring citizens' demand for an immediate end to approving these genetically engineered crops in our food supply.”

The newest genetically engineered soybean petitioned by Monsanto is one of the first to claim a public health benefit, since it has been engineered to contain higher levels of an omega-3 fatty acid, stearidonic acid.

“Genetically engineering a ubiquitous monoculture crop to contain higher levels of just one particular nutrient will not solve our public health crisis, and might even exacerbate it, since a healthy diet is about much more than simply increasing the levels of one particular omega-3 fatty acid,” said Vallaeys. “It’s another band-aid solution that will do little to address the root of the problem with our nation’s “nutrition” problem, which is people eating too many processed foods containing corn and soybean derivatives, and not eating a varied diet of nutrient-rich wholesome foods.”

The USDA surveyed 43 foods and compared their nutritional content in 1999 to original testing that took place in 1950. Half of the nutrients measured declined by 6 to 38%. "Industrial agriculture, as compared to organics, have relegated our diets to a lot of empty calories," Vallaeys added.

On the campaign trail in 2007, the President said that genetically modified foods should be labeled because Americans “should know what they are buying.”

Despite promises of change, Mr. Obama appointed former Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack as USDA Secretary, who had gained notoriety in agricultural circles after being named Governor of the Year by the Biotechnology Industry Organization.

Obama subsequently appointed two pro-GMO agrochemical company lobbyists to powerful positions in his administration. Michael Taylor, a former Monsanto lobbyist, became food czar at the Food and Drug Administration. Islam Siddiqui, a lifelong pesticide lobbyist and GMO advocate, was appointed Chief Agricultural Negotiator.

These appointments revealed the tight grip that Monsanto and other biotech corporations have on elected officials, and raised further doubts regarding the promises for change by the current administration.

Adding insult to injury, the Obama USDA’s timing for announcing notices related to genetic engineering mirrors the Bush administration's approach of burying the news and actively discouraging public participation. The FDA declared GMO salmon was safe, on the Friday before the long Labor Day weekend in 2010.

Then the USDA made their highly controversial decision to deregulate GMO alfalfa during the busy holiday season of 2010. Their decision is being challenged by The Cornucopia Institute, Beyond Pesticides, Center for Food Safety and scores of other plaintiffs in federal court.

More recently, the announcement that Monsanto’s newest genetically engineered corn had been deregulated, and that Monsanto and Dow had petitioned for additional approval of GMO corn and soybeans, came the week between Christmas and the New Year Day holiday.

"When attempting to bury controversial news, it's not uncommon for the government to issue press releases on days when the public isn't paying attention and the news media is on vacation," noted Cornucopia’s Mark Kastel. "The Bush administration did the same thing when announcing that bovine spongiform encephalopathy (mad cow disease) had entered the domestic food chain."

Citizens can comment on the proposed approval of Dow’s 2,4-D tolerant corn and Monsanto’s stearidonic acid soybeans until February 27, 2012.

'Mr. Daddy' Offers Suggestions For New Year's Resolutions For Parents

It’s a new year and whether you’re a new parent or a parent of multiples, it’s a good time to start something new to make life better for you and your family. Being a father of six, Robert Nickell, a.k.a. “Mr. Daddy,” knows just how important it is to make resolutions and just how tricky it can be to not only decide on what they should be, but also to stick to them.

New Year’s Resolution 1: To Be Patient
“I know as well as anyone, that being a parent of small children (and big kids, too!) can often mean having a short fuse and saying “no!” to simple requests, just out of frustration. Nickell adds, “No matter what you resolve for the New Year, remember to simply be the best person you can be.”

On January 17, the new series SuperMoms' launches its first episode online, featuring television stars Brennan Hesser, Joey Lauren Adams, Julie Warner, Lourdes Benedicto as four women who not only share the common bond of motherhood, but also the uncommon responsibility of being superheroes working together to foil their arch-enemy, Dr. Deconstructo. It is presented by The Clorox Company.

The show’s retro-style feel offers both live-action and animated “superhero” storylines, with the moms bouncing between their real identities and their animated alter egos. It’s a throwback to classic superhero characters and cartoons and is an excellent metaphor for the “super” in all moms we know!

KNOTT’S CELEBRATES 60th ANNIVERSARY OF CALICO AND GHOST TOWN RAILROAD

Knott’s Berry Farm will celebrate the 60^th Anniversary of the Ghost Town and Calico Railroad with four days of events starting January 12-15. Scheduled activities include tours of the Knott’s Calico and Ghost Town roundhouse and private car the “Edna,” a model train display, atmosphere talent, and a historic photo display.

Kicking off the four day event will be a re-creation of the opening Golden Spike Ceremony and will include the rededication and renaming of engine 41, which will now take the name of Knott’s founder, Walter Knott. Special guests for the Golden Spike Ceremony, which will take place at 11:00 am on January 12, include Walter Knott’s daughter, Marion Knott and Orange County newscaster and former Knott’s stagecoach cowboy, Ed Arnold.

Knott’s Boardwalk Ballroom will be the site of the Del Oro Pacific Modular Railroad one of the largest and oldest “G” scale modular layouts in the United States. The layout includes elaborate displays including a forest scene, Hollywood soundstage, industrial area and a model airplane park. The Boardwalk Ballroom will also feature a historic photo display with images from the opening day of the train in 1952.

For a small fee guests can sign up for a tour of the Ghost Town and Calico Railroad Roundhouse and the private car the “Edna.” Built in 1881 for the personal use of the President of the Rio Grande Southern Railway, the Edna private car features a sitting/dining room, bedroom and galley. The Knott’s Ghost Town and Calico Railroad Roundhouse tour takes you backstage to see where Knott’s repairs and stores their locomotives and passenger cars.

Knott’s will also be offering a one-of-a-kind experience, Dinner on the Durango. For $50 guests will board the “Durango” and will be served a three course meal as they ride the rail back to the glory days of the railroad. Built in 1880, the Durango is a 14 seat parlor car featuring swivel chairs, electric lights and a fully functional buffet.

Model train exhibit, photo display and daytime train rides are included with park admission. Tours of the Roundhouse and the Edna are available for $5 per person. Parents Address Favorites Among Vehicle Functionality, Technology, Safety and…Traffic Ticket Excuses

LeaseTrader.com, the nation’s most recognized name in car leasing, polled roughly 1,000 parents on a variety of auto issues that are important to every parent today, including features and safety, vehicle choices, functionality versus technology, and even what happens when parents get pulled over by the police.

Must-Have Tech Gadget: Rear Back-up Camera. Combining technology and safety, the rear back-up camera scored the highest marks out of all parents polled because it gives them a great sense of security on anything or anyone who’s potentially behind the vehicle. 39.3% of parents said this would be their first choice in a tech gadget, followed by the ability to synch all electronics in the vehicle (21.7%).

Most Overrated Car Feature: Cool box. Of all the features available in cars today that are important to parents, including safety, functionality and technology, 42.4% of parents said they felt the cool box was the most overrated feature in a car. The cool box allows parents to keep food, beverages and other child essentials chilled during trips. The overwhelming summary from parents is that they already bring other cooler options into the vehicle and find that they aren’t using built-in chill systems as much.

Most Surprising Vehicle: Mazda 5 Crossover. Priced under $20,000 and available for lease as low as $250 per month, the Mazda 5 scored the highest overall points in terms of functionality, technology, overall features, roominess and price. Parents love its ability to seat up to six passengers comfortably, ease of getting car seats in and out, lots of storage space and a USB jack for technology favorites. On a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the best, the Mazda 5 Crossover received an average score of 8.3.

Most Disappointing Vehicle: Toyota Rav4. When asked if they felt their vehicle was disappointing in terms of its effectiveness for parents, the Toyota Rav4 had the highest number of mentions. The majority of parents said they were overall disappointed with the vehicle’s handling and feel there just isn’t enough space that’s adequate for their needs. On a scale of 1-10, the Toyota Rav4 received an average score of 4.7.

Best Sedan Choice: Ford Fusion Hybrid. Packed with features, this vehicle scored highest marks out of all sedans because of its full slate of creature comforts along with its ability to offer incredible fuel economy. The vehicle also comes with rear back-up camera and rear sensors, options high on everyone’s list this year, in addition to technology features that allows parents and kids to charge gadgets during the trip. On a scale of 1-10, the Ford Fusion Hybrid received a score of 7.9.

Given the Choice Between Optional 3^rd Row Seats or DVD Package: Optional 3^rd Row Seats. Admittedly, this one surprised us a bit. Sure, parents are big on functionality. But DVDs in the car go a long way towards pacifying kids during long trips. Perhaps that there is the issue. 47.3% of parents chose optional 3^rrrow seats over the DVD package (38.6% with 14.1% saying neither), possibly because we’re taking shorter trips? Either way, if you’re a parent who’s big into space, it’s hard to pass up a solid extra row.

Excuse most often given if pulled over by police: Child had a dirty diaper (success of getting out of ticket – less than 10%). This one we had to have a little fun with. We all try to sometimes make an attempt at getting out of a speeding ticket. Ever wonder what parents do in this situation? Why not blame it on the diaper. The majority of parents said they’d tried this once when stopped for a speeding ticket. Perhaps they tried it only once because it worked for just 8.3 percent of those who admitted trying it.
