Tunes today provided by Eugene The Oceanographer. Formally in a band we covered called Superhero Eugene & The Orange Juice Sunshine Band here on waterloo radio Eugene is back this time as Eugene and The Oceanographer and has got some more mega tunes for us all to enjoy.

I really enjoyed the music of the former band and after only a couple of listens I had the same feelings from hearing these tunes. A great blend of various instruments and vocals it really is fitting music for what I feel I would like to listen to at ocean.

My mum shouted to me that Elvis had died. I didn't believe her. Nobody did. The most popular American singer of the 20th century and the man allot of people grew up on and were influenced by had passed away. I still remember my next door neighbor when I was young (In Manchester this is) dressing like Elvis with the hairstyle and everything.

Through the paper thin walls I could hear him blasting it out from such a young age that curiosity built and I had to know who he was listening to. An icon to many and the King Of Rock N Roll here's a couple of my fav Elvis tunes to honor the man today.

New Music Monday: Tokyo Corner

Got this sent over on Friday and I've had it on a few times over the weekend. Tokyo Corner are a 5 piece band from Huddersfield and have been playing for about 18 months together now. Last year they played some fantastic gigs such as supporting All The Young at the Cockpit in Leeds, and have had their music played on the BBC Unsigned show as well as many others.

This year they have had the pleasure of playing with such signed bands as King Charles at Tokyo in Huddersfield, and with Proud Mary at the Empire in Leeds, as well as playing with All The Young at the Cockpit for a second time.

Steadily creeping up and making a name for themselves the band are definitely worth a listen. With licks sounding a bit like the Stones and merging with a bit of punk swagger the band not only have an energetic sound but lyrics to accompany some mega riffs. The band do slow it down for "Feel It Drop" which is a nice acoustic number with a real country/rock n roll appeal to it.

A Tale From An Unsigned Band

Being an unsigned band in 2012 is hard to say the least, the responsibility on unsigned bands is much greater than in times gone by and if you are not lucky enough to have a manager, which lets face it, not many unsigned bands can claim to have, being in a band an be an extremely strenuous process.

The assumption that all great bands need an even better manager will always be up for discussion and debate, but speaking from first hand experience, it is often hard to priorities and focus on the music being created when you have to deal with all the things a manager should be dealing with your self. Although this can be stressful, time consuming and at times damn right frustrating, the fact that the band can become self sufficient is an extremely positive outcome.

To be a successful unsigned band there definitely needs to be a mutual understanding between the band members on the goals which need to be achieved. Great bands can often come undone at the seems through lack of proper communication and not having the determination and willingness to be able to work through band issues, and instead throwing in the towel and calling it a day.

Being a successful band in the West Midlands and in Coventry is an extremely hard prospect. With large amounts of local bands throughout of Coventry, it is paramount to stand out from the crowds or risk being submerged by the run of the mill majority. Success over night for bands is a fairytale, it requires years of practice and gigging good self management, advertisement and determination, and above all the will not to give up on your dream. If you have a passion for music and you are good at writing it, you have an obligation to the world to create and to play.

Another huge issue, is finding a promoter willing to give artists the relevant support and attention they require and deserve. With many promoters only concerned about bringing in the money and often not thinking about the bands, this can leave local bands feeling hard done by. There is always a pressure on groups to sell tickets for gigs, this isn’t at all a easy thing to do. This brings more stress on the band and consequently often bands can end up being wiped out of the local music scene because not having a following… and didn’t you think that was the whole point of gigging? Personally i think the responsibility should by mainly on the promoters to make sure they do large amounts of the ticket selling, hence there name.

Being in unsigned bands is hard no matter where you are play, the only advice i can give is to keep plugging away, don’t give up, don’t be pushed over or threatened by promoters who put pressure onto you, hold your own against them. Ensure the music comes first in front of anything! And if you are good enough people will eventually realize.

New Music: Nas Life Is Good

One of my favorite MC's of all time without a doubt. Nas is back with Life Is Good. He's had allot of bad press and heavy critics of his last couple of pieces of work and I must be honest although they had a couple of good tracks they weren't the quality I was anticipating. His solo work that is. The album with Damian Marley was a magic moment.

Nas is back most recently with "Life Is Good". Collaborating again with heavyweight producer Salaam Remi and help from No ID. Nas seems to have had various experimental phases over the last few years with his venture with Damian Marley and also playing with a live band on tours of Europe and Australia.

This kind of creativity and adventure sums Nas up to me. He's not afraid to go where other rappers won't. And with the current state of hip-hop desperately needing one of the heavyweight lyricists to deliver a banger Nas has done just that.

The album has been in the works since finishing "Distant Relatives" and Nas has been through some troubling times since. Divorce and some tax issues he faced did not stop the creativity floating to the top for him to deliver Life Is Good. And an exceptional effort it is.

For me his best work since Stillmatic and critics seem to agree. He's got some assistance from some big names. Mary J Blige and Amy Winehouse to mention a couple but he has in the past and the previous albums still haven't been strong. This time Nas is the main event and he is back delivering his poetic lines and spitting fire and sounding hungrier than ever on every verse.

Yes there are some tunes made for the radio but thats a given. He's got some records to sell so fair enough. But for the hip-hop purists this is Nas getting back to his best lyrically and sounding as confident and mature in his rhymes with the most punch since Illmatic.

For a couple of albums it felt Nas was trying a bit to hard. Here he seems to be honest, open and doing what all quality music requires, passionate.

The world is becoming more efficient to some degree. We have electronic music that streams and is available no your phone or device that you never touch. You never feel it. It's nothing. Is the same happening with various relationships? Between Facebook, Twitter and so on it seems everyones life is an open book being recorded on the web. But is that creating anti-social behaviour in turn. I hope not.

I write all this because my love for holding a truly quality product is important to me. To appreciate another humans craft and engineering is a beautiful thing. Whether you get your fix with clothes, cars or vinyl records seeing mans creation can ignite your own passion and ideas to explore creating something great.

Making the world more resourceful is nice and I'm all for not tearing out World to pieces but appreciation of human craft is something I can't escape and here's why:

5. Record Stores: Allot of people reading this will have or still go to a record store. I mean shelves of packed in vinyl. Some 50 cents some $15 but either way you'll find some gems. The record stores still open have an amazing aura for me. Going in an digging in the crates and finding some quality tunes is a great experience. Plus all the quality chat you get with all the local music heads is inspiring. I've found out about bands and music I never knew existed without being down the record shop. Plus it's good for local business and all that isn't it?

4. The Sound: Anyone that's listened to an old Stones or Beatles record on vinyl will know what I am talking about. Listening to that crackling and then the tunes coming in is a magical moment. Nothing quite like it. Dropping the needle and waiting for it to kick in is like a sweet release and the sound throughout is epic.

3. Album Sleeves: Getting the album and throwing it on for a listen is lovely. But studying and admiring the efforts of the art that goes into the sleeve is mega. From pictures of the band or some other creative masterpiece there are so many different sleeves that contribute to the overall brilliance of the record.

2. 7 Inch Singles: Having the ability to get a bands singles was nice by picking up the 7 inch version and getting some quality B Sides along with it maybe if the band was an unknown quantity before getting the full album. Also the delight of hitting a gem of a B Side is priceless. Especially getting to tell your mates about it.

1. Building A Collection: People collect all different types of stuff. Vinyl is a collection like no other. Going through the crates and finding records you'd forgotten you hadn't listened to for a while. Getting my dads records out he had when he was younger. It is a great feeling to have so many top tunes and music that will forever sound amazing and unique compared to todays polished sound. For anyone that doesn't get yourself a deck and start getting some vinyl. Share with me what you think about the differences.

Bee Gee's - Robin Gibb remembered

I first heard the Bee Gee's in their disco dancing tunes that my mum might have on. I got a deep love for the band once I heard some of the earlier more "Pop Psychedelic" tunes of the 60's.

They really have this epic swirling catelgogue and ability to keep reinventing themselves and making monstrous tunes that the world adored.

Innovative and writing beautiful tunes will what I remember Gibb for. I've left a couple of my personal favs below for you to listen to.

Richard James is a soulful solo artist all the way from Devon. Fame Factor got the chance to catch up with him for a quick fire interview March 26th. The singer/songwriter is currently attempting to make it to the top, and I believe he will. He is a lovely boy, with a soothing tone to his voice, and his songs are full of heartache and passion. How did you get started?

“Piano lessons as a kid – went on to study at college.”

“Soulful Acoustic Pop.”

Who are your musical influences?
“John Mayer, Elbow, Scott Matthews, Matchbox Twenty, Maroon 5, Damien Rice, Michael Buble, Jason Mraz, The Civil Wars, Bruno Mars, Counting Crows…these are people I listen to but don’t necessarily sound like.”

Do you have any pre-show rituals?

“I make sure I have a spare set of springs, and down ½ pint of water…usually.”

What’s the best thing that’s happened to you in the last year?

“I play the support slot for Scott Mathews who I think is awesome! …Oh and I won a 10er on a scratch card the other week.”

What’s in the pipeline?

“I’m working on a new EP that I want to tour over the summer, got a few show cases in London coming up and I’m fronting the Mamastones HouseBand in May.”

What’s the dream?

“The ultimate dream is to be known and respected for making music, I’d love to work with all the big names and at some point play a main stage with a full band at Glastonbury (or at a festival of a similar size!!) …a big house and car would be nice too! Ha! Rock’n’Roll.”

The Best Live Gigs I Ever Saw

I’ve been going to gigs constantly for around 11 years now. Some have been great, and a lot have been awful. Here are the top 10 gigs that I’ve been to.

10. Bloc Party @ Manchester Apollo, 2010

Bloc Party would probably be higher up my list, but for two reasons. First, if you're going to go see a band, make sure you're standing at the front and not sitting in the gods. Secondly, don't go see them when they release their worst album (3rd). It picked up though when they smashed their way through Banquet and Helicopter.

9. The Coral @ Manchester Academy, 2001

I love The Coral. Scouse bands are rather thin on the ground now, but their brand of quirky indie still sounds great. The gig itself was a bit of a let-down as the crowd was the proverbial man and his dog. Still, it was a great night for music.

8. Incubus @ Manchester Apollo, 2001

The first gig I ever went to, at the tender age of 16. They did a great set, and when they played Wish You Were Here, the place went mental. I remember leaving the Apollo desperate for more. All in all, a great first gig to go to.

7. Andrew WK @ Manchester Academy, 2001

Fast, frantic and the crowd was a volatile, heaving mass of spot encrusted 16 year olds. Lots of mosh pits and probably a few injuries as well. Left the Academy soaked in sweat. Exhilarating stuff.

6. Professor Elemental @ Lass O’Gowrie, 2012

I saw the good Professor a couple of weeks ago at the Lass O'Gowrie in Manchester. For such a small venue, it was electric. The Professor was on good form, bringing chap-hop to the hungry few. It was a great gig and I recommend you check him out.

5. The Editors @ UEA, 2007

I've seen them twice, but the better gig was at UEA in Norwich. The stage is tiny and they use a grand piano in some of their songs, so Tom Smith (singer/guitarist) played many of the songs standing on it. The atmosphere was fantastic.

4. Iron Maiden @ Leeds, 2005

The last gig of the night, Iron Maiden was loud, brash and produced a fantastic light show. I'm not a big metal fan but they blew me away, they were that good. When they started Fear of the Dark you could sense the crowd about to explode into action, and when it happened I got swept up too. It was worth the broken nose and black eye.

3. Muse @ LCC, 2010

Voted several times by various publications as the live show of the year, Muse were amazing. Most of the gigs that I’ve been to see the band slowly working the crowd into a frenzy, but at Muse it went crazy about 2 notes into the first song. I was slammed about constantly from when New Born started, and I loved it.

2. Foo Fighters @ Leeds, 2005

I’m a big fan of the Foo Fighters, and they lived up to my expectations when I saw them. They did a long set, and whilst it wasn’t as fast or as frenzied as Muse or Iron Maiden, it was still an amazing gig. Everlong is even better live.

1. Blood Red Shoes @ UEA, 2007

Blood Red Shoes might surprise you for being on the list at all considering some of the bands above, but they are the best I’ve seen. A duo from Brighton, their screaming vocals and frenetic playing outshone the band they were supporting, Biffy Clyro. They aren’t as skilled as Muse or the Foo Fighters, and don’t possess the presence of Iron Maiden but they are raw, fast, and they get under your skin.

New Music Monday - Future Loves Past Tempe AZ

I was stuck in an elevator. It was hot. I was waiting to be picked up for gig in Arizona. If the lift didn't move soon I thought I'd die let alone miss the gig. There's always that moment of panic when you step in an elevator you know what I mean, its just a bit uncomfortable.

Finally the maintenance workers saved me and I was free. Late for the gig. But free. It would not matter much though as I got to see the last act of the night, just in time.

There is always a great level of excitement when you go to see new bands and on this occasion they were all new to me. I didn't know much about the music scene in Phoenix apart from a handful of bands so a few pints and some tunes would go down a treat.

A very chilled out sound. Psychedelic in parts. Harmonies that sound like a river running through a busy city. The fusion of multiple sounds and genre's can become a slice of fucked up sound but they balanced it all out beautifully..

The folk inspiration is apparent in the tunes and the free flowing melody on that night in Phoenix was a pleasure to hear.

I like the fact they are into what they are doing and seem to be having a good time (See My Post On How To Be The Best Band In The World). I'd love to hear some more. I have heard a few tracks but their live performance was enough to sell me on the quality of this act.

So the night went from impending doom to hearing a quality act.

10,000 Hours & You're The Beatles

Malcolm Gladwell wrote that it takes 10,000 hours of practice in order to become a master in a certain field. What does this mean to you. Well in any profession it means you better get busy practicing. By age 20 the lads in The Beatles had amassed their 10,000 hours and were ready to be masters.

Leaving nothing to chance you and your band can achieve great sounds. It does mean if you're serious you need more practice than you are probably currently getting. So to be better than The Beatles you'll need to start racking up the hours.

This is a formula that's proven in many fields (Bill gates, Tiger Woods) so it can happen. How much you put in will inevitably turn out to be how much you get out. But to be bigger than The Beatles you'll need 10,000 hours. Simple as.

I just finished this book and its a fascinating read and I do suggest giving it a go if you are a reader. For me it relates to music so well because so many bands go for a year or so and wonder why they haven't pushed forward. Getting to 10,000 hours will not be achieved by many bands EVER.

Therefore maybe aim for that 2,500-4,000 hour mark and you will still be a GREAT band. I put this theory into practice with playing chess and I noticed drastic improvements in the course of a year of steady practice and this was nowhere near amassing even 1500 hours. So get busy get practicing and also read 5 Ways To Be The Best Band Ever for some friendly advice.

5 Ways To Be The Best Band Ever..

So I've been in a few bands. Some shit. Some alright. But always fun. I love music. Some bands that have been popular around the globe and some that never left my home town.

Maybe you don't want to be in the best band ever. I don't know. But if you do there are a few prerequisites that must be filled. Here are my 5. There are probably a million more but these were the 5 I had on my mind that inspired the article.

5. Passion - If you're not into it then don't bother. You need to love what you're doing. This goes for anything in life. Whether you are washing cars or making tunes. If you're a garage band or starting to get a good following. Write tunes you love. We get sent so many demo's and MP3's from bands that are clearly just looking to get in bed with Radio/TV etc. They forget what its about. making tunes YOU love. If you don't like them why the fuck would anyone else.

4. Confidence - There is a fine line I know between confidence and coming across as arrogant. It doesn't mean you need to be a complete prick to everyone you come across but you have to believe in yourself and the band/group whatever it is you're in.

You should be able to have that record in you're hand (or digital copy) and feel like whoever hears it will think its the best thing they have ever come across. Whether it is or not you should feel it is. If you've put you're time and passion (see above) into the music then you should be confident. Now the domino effect will take place and your record will be passed around and suggested to others like a joint at a Jerry Garcia gig.

3. Flip It Upside Down - What I mean by this is simple. If everyone is doing the latest sound because its selling don't just follow along. Just because Bloc Party have a fucking hit doesn't mean we want to hear another 40 bands that sound the same. Of course it should be in the sound you love but create something different. Stand out. Make us believe you're the purple cow in a field of normal cows. And you'll be golden.

2. Interact With People - This can be fans, labels, venues whatever. bands are getting decent at this but if you are in this to make it your life then get hustling. Don't be lazy. Gig everywhere. Write a blog about your bands travels and take pictures. Do it all. The tools are there. Leave a bit of mystique though. I remember having never seen a picture or video of a band and then seeing them live in Manchester after only hearing word of mouth review and it being a better experience than seeing an established band due to the level of mystique.

1. Be Happy - Honestly these are in no order except for this one. This is #1. If you and the band are having a good time like anything else in life good things will follow. Forget about downloads, sales and gig attendances. Just get out and enjoy it all. Life's short. Make some tunes and play them and forget where you are. That energy alone will draw people in to come and see a group of people having a good time. Get from up the record labels arses and enjoy things for a bit because once you get a golden deal you'll be more unhappy and a slave than you realize.

The Greatest Record Ever - Part 3: Ocean Colour Scene

By the time I got hold of this record my brother gave me I was already in love with a band that lacked a strong following for how good a band they were. They had it all. A debut album that was born in the ashes of a Madchester scene. Which in turn would lead to this epic second album from OCS released in 1996.

The band had some star connections in Noel G and Paul Weller and were able to be put back in the spotlight. Giving a platform for the release of Moseley Shoals.

The music itself is what deserved all the attention and credit though. Not the press and hype. A funky whirlwind of soul and R n B. Everyone can immediately hear the Beatles style swirly guitar and a looser sound of the band really enjoying themselves.

If you've not listen now. If you have then listen to this quality throw back records. Certainly one of my favourites of the 90's.

New Music Monday - DAKOTA - Devil

I was fencing last week for the first time and got fucking shafted right on my arm by some prick that was meant to be going easy... Anyway after that I got in and listened to this tune that was kindly forwarded over by Dave from DAKOTA in New Zealand.

There's something raw in it.. Which suited my mood at the time as I was thoroughly pissed off. A bit of edge I thought and maybe feel is missing from tunes today. Stereophonic influence in here somewhere for sure.. In the band's name and the titled of a Stereophonic's tune. but hey nothing wrong with that. Their a great band and DAKOTA could just be on track spread great tunes too.

the band's going over to the UK soon so be sure to check up on dates and go and watch them droogs.
