কিন্তু, আমারা না বুঝেই দিনের পর দিন এই সব প্লাস্টিকের বোতল ব্যবহার করে থাকি। অনেকে তো বাচ্চার দুধ ভর্তি প্লাস্টিকের ফিডিং বোতলটাই গরম করে বসেন। প্লাস্টিক বোতলের এমন যথেচ্ছ ব্যবহার আদোও কি স্বাস্থ্যকর?
এ বিষয়ে বাচবিচার আমরা করি না। তাই প্লাস্টিক বোতলের তলায় থাকা ত্রিকোণ চিহ্নের ♻️ মানেটা বুঝে নিলে অনেক সমস্যার সমাধান হয়ে যেতে পারে নিমেষে।
প্লাস্টিকের বোতলের নিচের চিহ্ন
১. ত্রিকোণ চিহ্ন— এটা আসলে প্লাস্টিক বোতলের চারিত্রিক ইনডেক্স। এই চিহ্নটা থাকলে বোঝা যায় বোতলটি বিধিসম্মতভাবে তৈরি। কিন্তু, বোতলটা ব্যবহারের কতটা নির্ভরযোগ্য বা কী ধরনের জিনিস তাতে রাখা যাবে, তা ত্রিকোণ চিহ্নের মধ্যে থাকা সংখ্যা দ্বারা বোঝা যায়।
২. ত্রিকোণের মাঝে ১ সংখ্যা থাকলে— এর মানে বোতলটি একবারই মাত্র ব্যবহার করা যাবে এবং বোতলটিতে পলিথিলিন টেরেপথ্যালেট প্লাস্টিক ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে। এই ধরনের বোতল বহুব্যবহারে স্বাস্থ্যের পক্ষে হানিকারক।
৩. ত্রিকোণের মধ্যে ২ সংখ্যা থাকলে— এই ধরনের প্লাস্টিক বোতলে ঘন পলিথিন ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে। মূলত শ্যাম্পু বা ডিটারজেন্ট রাখার ক্ষেত্রে এই ধরনের বোতল ব্যবহার হয়।
৪. ত্রিকোণের মধ্যে ৩ সংখ্যা থাকলে— এই ধরনের বোতল বেশি ব্যবহার করা উচিত নয়। কারণ, এই বোতল তৈরি হয় ‘পোলিভিনিল ক্লোরাইড’ বা ‘পিভিসি’ থেকে। এতে ক্যানসার হওয়ার আশঙ্কা থাকে। ‘পিনাট বাটার’ রাখতে এই বোতল ব্যবহার করা হয়।
৫. ত্রিকোণের মধ্যে ৪ সংখ্যা থাকলে— এই ধরনের প্লাস্টিক বহু ব্যবহারের উপযোগী। বিশেষ করে, প্লাস্টিকের প্যাকেটে এই চিহ্ন প্রচুর দেখা যায়। খুব দামি বোতলে এই চিহ্ন থাকে।
৬. ত্রিকোণের মধ্যে ৫ সংখ্যা থাকলে— এই ধরনের প্লাস্টিক একদম নিরাপদ এবং ব্যবহারের যোগ্য। আইক্রিম কাপ বা সিরাপের বোতল অথবা খাবারের কন্টেনারে এই ধরনের চিহ্ন দেখা যায়।
৭. ত্রিকোণের মধ্যে ৬ অথবা ৭ সংখ্যা থাকলে— প্লাস্টিকের রেড কার্ড বলা হয় একে। এই ধরনের প্লাস্টিক মারাত্মক রকমের ক্ষতিকারক। কারণ এই ধরনের প্লাস্টিক তৈরি হয় পলিস্টিরিন এবং পলিকার্বনেট বিসফেনল-এ। এটা মানুষের মধ্যে হরমোন সমস্যা তৈরি করে। ক্রমাগত এই ধরনের প্লাস্টিকের ব্যবহার ক্যানসারের প্রবণতা বাড়ায়।

Definition (1):

বাক্যে ব্যবহৃত প্রত্যেকটি শব্দকে এক একটি Part of Speech বলে।

Every single word we use in a sentence is called a Part of Speech.

Example:

Karim is a good boy.
He goes to school
Ashik eats Rice.

১ নং বাক্যে, Karim, is, a, good, এবং boy প্রত্যেকটি একেকটি part of speech.

ঠিক একই ভাবে ২ নং বাক্যে, he, goes, to , school ইত্যাদি আলাদা আলাদা ভাবে প্রত্যেকটিই একেকটি Part of Speech. কারণ, তারা প্রত্যেকটিই বাক্যের অংশ। ৩ নং বাক্যটিতে মোট তিনটি শব্দ বা word আছে। সুতরাং এই বাক্যের তিনটি part of speech আছে।

Definition (2):

Words are considered as the smallest part of a sentence. According to the use and work, words are divided into different classes, called parts of speech.

বাক্যে, ব্যবহার এবং কাজের উপর ভিত্তি করে শব্দসমূহকে বিভিন্ন শ্রেনীতে ভাগ করা হয়েছে। বাক্যের অন্তর্গত এই প্রত্যেকটা শব্দকেই Parts of Speech বলে।

Example:

Do not run in the sun.
Walking is the best exercise.
He went to school.

উপরোল্লেখিত বাক্যেগুলোতে ব্যবহৃত প্রত্যেকটি শব্দকেই Part of Speech বলে।

Note: একটা কথা মনে রাখতে হবে যে, শব্দগুলো অবশ্যই কোন না কোন বাক্যের অংশ হতে হবে। আলাদা ভাবে কোন একটা শব্দকে part of speech বলা যাবে না।অর্থাৎ সকল Parts of Speech ই Word কিন্তু সকল Word ই Parts of Speech না।

Part of Speech মানে বাক্যের অংশ। Word যতক্ষণ বাক্যে ব্যবহার না হবে ততক্ষণ এটাকে Parts of Speech বলা যাবেনা। আমি যদি বলি Water তাহলে সেটা কোন Part of Speech হবেনা । কারণ, এটা কোন বাক্যের অংশ নয়। সম্পূর্ন আলাদা একটা শব্দ মাত্র। কিন্তু আমি যদি বলি Water is life তাহলে Water একটি Parts of Speech হবে। কারণ, এখানে water বাক্যেরই একটি অংশ।

Parts of Speech এর প্রকারভেদঃ

There are eight types of parts of speech according to their functions in a sentence.

Noun (বিশেষ্য)
Pronoun (সর্বনাম)
Adjective (নাম বিশেষণ)
Verb (ক্রীয়া বা কাজ)
Adverb (ক্রীয়া বিশেষণ)
Preposition (পদান্বয়ী অব্যয়)
Conjunction (সংযোজক অব্যয়)
Interjection (আবেগ সূচক অব্যয়)

Noun (বিশেষ্য)

যে word দ্বারা কোন কিছুর নাম প্রকাশ করা হয় তাকে noun বলে । আমাদের চোখের সামনে যা দেখি সেগুলোর নামকেই noun বলে। Noun দ্বারা কোন ব্যক্তি, বস্তু, প্রাণী ,স্থান ,ঘটনা ইত্যাদির নাম বোঝায়।

Noun refers to any kind of name. Means, whatever we are seeing and watching around us is noun.

Nouns are used to name persons, things, animals, events, places, ideas etc.

Example:

Karim does not like to go to school. (এই বাক্যে Karim একজন ব্যক্তির নাম।)
Kuwait is a Muslim country. (এখানে কুয়েত একটি দেশের নাম।)
Diamond is very valuable. (ডায়মন্ড একটি বস্তুর নাম।)

Nouns are classified into five types. These are:

Proper Noun (নাম বাচক বিশেষ্য)
Common Noun (জাতিবাচক বিশেষ্য)
Collective Noun (সমষ্টিবাচক বিশেষ্য)
Material Noun (বস্তুবাচক বিশেষ্য)
Abstract Noun (গুণবাচক বিশেষ্য)

Pronoun (সর্বনাম):

সহজভাবে, যে সকল শব্দ আমরা নামের পরিবর্তে বসাই তাকেই Pronoun বা সর্বনাম বলে। যেমন, He, She, We etc.

The word which we use instead of Noun is called Pronoun.

Example:

Karim is a good boy. (এখানে Karim একটি Noun).
He goes to school every day.
We should take care of our children.

উপরের উদাহরণ গুলোতে Karim নামক একটি ছেলের সম্পর্কে বলা হয়েছে। প্রথম বার তার নাম Karim হিসেবে ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে,পরবর্তীতে যতবার তার নাম আসবে ততবার তার নামের পরিবর্তে Pronoun হিসেবে He ব্যবহার করা যাবে। তেমনি বিভিন্ন ধরনের Noun এর gender এবং number অনুযায়ী Pronoun বসাতে হয়।

Adjective (নাম বিশেষণ):

যে সকল শব্দ দ্বারা কোন Noun বা Pronoun এর দোষ, গুণ, সংখ্যা, পরিমাণ, অবস্থা ইত্যাদি প্রকাশ করা হয় তাকে Adjective বলে।

Adjectives qualify only Noun and Pronoun. It specifies the quality, number and size of noun or pronoun. It describes about nouns or pronouns.

Example:

Naima is a beautiful (এখানে Noun এর গুণ বুঝাচ্ছে)
He has three red pens. (Noun এর সংখ্যা বুঝাচ্ছে)
Safi is (Noun এর অবস্থা বুঝাচ্ছে)

Verb (ক্রিয়া বা কাজ):

Verb is an important part of speech. Without verb no sentence can be formed. It shows a physical or mental action. Verb always believes in doings and actions.

যে শব্দ দ্বারা কোন কাজ করা/হওয়া বুঝায় তাকেই Verb বলে। যেমন, go, eat, sleep, buy, sell, walk, run, see, play, write, give etc.

Example:

We play cricket.
He writes a letter.
He gave me a glass of water.

Adverb (ক্রিয়া বিশেষণ):

যে সকল শব্দ Verb, Adjective বা অন্য adverb কে Modify করে বা কোনকিছু add করে সেই সকল শব্দগুলোকে Adverb বলে। যেমন, very, slowly, well, carefully etc.

The word that usually modifies the verb, adjective or other adverb is known as an adverb.

Example:

He asked my name gently.
She walks slowly.
She bought a very long dress.

Preposition (পদান্বয়ী অব্যয়):

Preposition defines the relationship between noun or pronoun with another word in a sentence. It works as a connector and specifies the location or a location in time.

বাংলায় Pre শব্দের অর্থ পূর্বে আর Position শব্দের অর্থ অবস্থান। তাই খুব সহজেই বুঝা যায় যে, যেসব শব্দ Noun বা Pronoun এর পূর্বে অবস্থান করে বাক্যের অন্যান্য অংশের সাথে ঐ Noun বা Pronoun এর সম্পর্ক স্থাপন করে তাকে Preposition বলে। যেমন, in, on, under, with, at, over, of, below, throughout, by, about, until etc.

Example:

The book is on the table.
Rahim is hiding behind the tree.
The girl brought a letter for me from the teacher who taught us English.

১ম বাক্যের দিকে তাকালে আমরা দেখতে পাই যে যদি আমরা Noun এর পূর্বে কোন preposition না বসাই তাহলে “The table” Noun টি বাক্য থেকে বিচ্ছিন্ন হয়ে যাচ্ছে। On বসানোর সাথে সাথেই সেটি বাক্যের সাথে সংযুক্ত হয়ে যায়। ঠিক একই ভাবে বাকি Sentence গুলোতেও behind এবং from একই কাজ করছে।

Conjunction (সংযোজক অব্যয়):

যেসব Word একাধিক শব্দ, বাক্য কিংবা Clause কে সংযুক্ত করে তাদেরকে Conjunction বলে। যেমন, and, or, but, yet, for, nor, so, becauseetc.

Usually, a conjunction joins the word with another word or joins a sentence with another sentence. It is a connector. It links words, sentences, phrases or clauses.

Example:

Saif and Sourav are good friends. (এখানে দুটি শব্দকে সংযুক্ত করেছে)
Akash is a boy, but Mou is a girl. (দুটি clause কে সংযুক্ত করেছে)
She gave me the letter and then she quickly (দুটি clause কে সংযুক্ত করেছে)

Interjection (আবেগসূচক অব্যয়):

It expresses strong feelings, emotions and sudden changes of mind. It may be sudden happiness or sadness.

Interjection হঠাৎ করে মনের আবেগ কিংবা অনুভূতির কোন পরিবর্তন/প্রকাশ কে বুঝায়। যেমন, Hurrah, Alas, Oh, Bravo, Ouch, Ah etc.

Example:

Alas! Her father is dead.
Hurrah! We’ve won the game.
Oh! What a beautiful girl she is!

A word is a letter or a group of letters that have a meaning when spoken or written. It’s a speech sound or combination of sounds that may consist of a single morpheme or a combination of morphemes. Words may be classified according to their meanings, uses, and actions, but it is very tough to define exactly.

Word বা শব্দ হচ্ছে ব্যক্ত বা লিখিত বর্ণ বা বর্ণ সমষ্টি যার একটা নির্দিষ্ট অর্থ আছে।

Morphemes are the smallest grammatical meaningful units in a language. In the field of linguistic study, the branch that studies the structures of a word is called morphology, and the branch that studies about the meanings the word is called lexical semantics.

কোন ভাষা শিক্ষার ক্ষেত্রে, ভাষার যে শাখা শব্দের গঠন নিয়ে আলোচনা করে তাকেই Morphologyবলে। এবং যে শাখা শব্দের অর্থ নিয়ে কাজ করে তাকে lexical semantics বলে।

Example:

Good (ভালো)
Look (দেখা)
Come (আসা)

The words mentioned above provide meanings. So, they are the examples of the word.

উপরের শব্দগুলো একটি নির্দিষ্ট অর্থ প্রকাশ করে, তাই তারা প্রতিটি একেকটি শব্দ।

A complete meaningful word should maintain the following criteria:

একটা পরিপূর্ণ অর্থবোধক শব্দ হওয়ার জন্য কিছু নিয়ম অনুসরণ করতে হয়। সেগুলো হচ্ছেঃ

1. প্রত্যেকটা শব্দেরই একটা অর্থ থাকতে হবে। এখানে “halalization’ শব্দটির কোন অর্থ নেই ইংরেজী ভাষায়। তাই এটি শব্দের আওতাভূক্ত হবে না।

Every word must have a meaning. The word ‘halalization’ doesn’t have any exact meaning in English language, so it cannot be a word.

2. প্রত্যেকটা শব্দেরই একটা root বা মূল শব্দ থাকে যা থেকে আরও অনেক নতুন শব্দ তৈরী হয়। যদি কোন কারণে ঐ root শব্দটি ভেঙে ফেলা হয় তাহলে সেটি কোনভাবেই আর একটি অর্থবোধক শব্দ থাকেনা। যেমন, এখানে দেখানো হয়েছে যে, happy একটি ইংরেজী শব্দ। এর আগে un যুক্ত হয়ে unhappy শব্দটি তৈরি করে।

Every word has a root. From this root, many new words can be created. If somehow, the root is broken, it will not be a word anymore. For example, say there is a word ‘unhappy’. The root is ‘happy’. A new word is created by adding ‘un’. If the root word happy is broken, it is not a valid word anymore.

3. দুটি শব্দ একত্রে উচ্চারণ করার জন্যে শব্দ দুটির মাঝে একটু থামতে হয় এবং লেখার সময় সঠিক জায়গায় সঠিকভাবে space দিতে হয়। ধরা যাক, sky এবং blue দুটি ইংরেজি শব্দ। আমরা যদি তাদেরকে উচ্চারণ করতে চাই তাহলে প্রত্যেকটা শব্দ বলার পর একটু থামতে হবে। লিখতে গেলে দুইটা শব্দের মাঝখানে একটা space দিতে হবে।

A necessary pause during speaking and an effective space during writing between two or more words are a must. For example, suppose ‘sky’ and ‘blue’ are two words. If we want to pronounce them, we need a potential pause after pronouncing each of them. So, it should be like that “blue” “sky”, not “bluesky” and if we want to use them in a sentence, we must put a space after writing each of the words like “blue sky.”

There are 3 Degrees of adjectives. And these are:

A positive adjective
A comparative adjective
A superlative adjective

Positive adjective:

Positive adjective দ্বারা কোন তুলনা করা বোঝায় না। সাধারণভাবে noun বা pronoun এর বর্ণনা করে।

A Positive Adjective is a simple adjective, and it is used to describe, not to compare anything.

Example:

He is a good boy.
It is a beautiful garden.
Akash is sick.

Comparative adjective:

This type of adjective is used to compare two things, sometimes the word ‘than’ is used between the two nouns or pronoun.

দুইটি জিনিসের মধ্যে তুলনা বোঝাতে comparative adjective ব্যবহার করা হয়।

Example:

Rahim is better than Karim. (রহিম করিমের চেয়ে ভাল)
Namira is more beautiful than Samira. (নামিরা সামিরার চেয়ে বেশি সুন্দরী)
He is funnier than her. (সে তার থেকেও বেশি হাস্যকর)

Superlative adjective:

দুইয়ের অধিকের মধ্যে তুলনা করে সবচেয়ে ভাল/খারাপ/কম/বেশি ইত্যাদি বোঝাতে superlative adjective ব্যবহার করা হয়।

The superlative adjective is used to express that something is the best/most and compares three or more things.

Example:

She is the most beautiful girl in the world. (সে সারা পৃথিবীর মধ্যে সবচেয়ে সুন্দরী মেয়ে)
He is the funniest person. (সে সবচেয়ে মজার মানুষ)
This is the best lunch in this restaurant. (এটা এই রেস্টুরেন্টের সবচেয়ে ভাল দুপুরের খাবার)

There are seven types of Adjectives. These are:

Descriptive adjectives/qualitative adjectives/adjective of quality
Adjectives of number/Numeric adjective
Adjectives of quantity/quantitative adjectives
Demonstrative adjectives
Possessive adjectives
Interrogative adjectives
Distributive adjectives

Descriptive adjective:

Descriptive Adjective সাধারণত noun বা pronoun এর quality বোঝায় এবং তার সম্পর্কে বর্ণনা করে।

যেমন: Nice, good, bad, beautiful, charming, nice, etc.

The descriptive adjective is used to express the qualities of noun or pronoun. It is also used for the description of someone or something.

Example:

He told me about a great moment of his life.
She is looking good.
You are a bad boy.

Adjectives of number/Numeric adjective:

Noun বা pronoun এর সংখ্যা বা ক্রম বোঝাতে numeric adjective ব্যবহার করা হয়।

যেমন: Two, three, four, first, second, third, Single, double, triple, etc.

The numeric adjective is used to express the number or order of noun or pronoun.

Example:

He is the first boy in the class.
She can drink two cups of tea at a time.
The owner of the house does not rent the room to the single

Adjectives of quantity/quantitative adjectives:

Noun বা Pronoun এর পরিমাণ বোঝাতে quantative adjective ব্যবহার করা হয়।

যেমন: Some, enough, many, little, much, whole, sufficient, all, none, half, more, etc.

The quantitative adjective is used to express or indicate the quantity of a noun or pronoun or something.

Example:

I’ve enough money.
The whole country is happy today.
Give me some peanuts.

Demonstrative adjectives:

Noun বা pronoun কে নির্দিষ্ট করে বোঝাতে demonstratives ব্যবহৃত হয়।

যেমন: This, that, those, these, etc.

Demonstratives are used to specify the noun or pronoun.

Example:

This book is mine. (এই বইটি আমার)
That is his room. (এটি তার কক্ষ)
These notes should be followed. (এই নোট গুলো অনুসরণ করা উচিৎ)

Possessive adjectives:

বাক্যে মালিকানা বা নিজস্ব কোন সম্পদ বোঝাতে possessive ব্যবহার করা হয়।

Such as, my, her, their, our, your, etc.

Possessives are used to show the possession or belongingness in the sentence.

Example:

I’ve seen her (আমি তার বিড়ালটিকে দেখেছি)
Their house is very big. (তাদের বাড়িটি অনেক বড়)
This is our school pond. (এটা আমাদের স্কুলের পুকুর)

Interrogative adjectives:

Interrogative adjectives সাধারণত Noun বা pronoun কে প্রশ্নের মাধ্যমে modify করে।

What, which and whose are known as interrogative adjectives.

An Interrogative adjective modifies nouns or pronouns and forms a question.

Example:

What kind of tree is it?
Which subject do you want to teach?
Whose room is this?

Distributive adjectives:

কোন group এর কাউকে নির্দিষ্ট করে বর্ণনা করতে Distributive Adjective ব্যবহৃত হয়।

যেমন: Each, any, every, either, neither, etc.

The distributive adjective is used to describe a specific member out of a group.

Example:

Any of you can eat the apple. (আপনাদের মধ্যে যে কেউ আপেলটি খেতে পারেন)
Each of the students will get money. (প্রত্যেক ছাত্রই টাকা পাবে)
Every man has to go outside for a job. (প্রত্যেকটি মানুষেরই চাকরি করার জন্য বাইরে যেতে হয়)

যে শব্দ দ্বারা কোন প্রকার কাজ করা/হওয়া বুঝায় তাকেই Verb বলে। যেমন, go, eat, sleep, buy, sell, walk, run, see, play, write, give etc.

Verb কে ইংরেজি sentence এর হৃদয় বলা হয়। verb ছাড়া কোন sentence গঠন করা সম্ভব নয়।

The verb is an important part of speech. Without the verb, no sentence can be formed. It shows a physical or mental action.

Example:

We play cricket.
He writes a letter.
He gave me a glass of water.

There are many types of verbs. Some are discussed below:

Finite Verb:

Finite Verb বাক্যের প্রধান verb হতে পারে এবং বাক্য গঠনের ক্ষেত্রে subject এর number এবং person এর সাহায্যে এই verb এর form নির্ধারণ করা হয়।

A Finite verb can come as the main verb in a sentence, and it changes according to the tenses of the action and the number and person of the subject.

Example: Afroza works in a bank.

Non-finite Verb:

Non-finite verb কখনো main verb হতে পারে না। Non-finite verb বাক্যে সাধারণত adjective অথবা adverb হিসেবে কাজ করে কিন্তু verb হিসেবে নয়।

Non-finite verbs can’t be main verbs.

Example: Coming home, I saw the man running away.

There are three types of non-finite verbs.

Infinitives: to do, to eat, to drink, to dance
Participles: doing, done, eating, eaten, drinking, drunk
Gerunds: walking, swimming, running

Action verb:

Action verb, Subject এর কাজকে বর্ণনা করে। যেকোন কাজকেই action verb হিসেবে বিবেচনা করা যায়।

Action verbs express actions. They complete the sentence and describe the subject’s action.

Example:

I’ll do my work.
She watches TV.

Action verbs are of two types.

1. Transitive Verb:

Transitive verb সবসময় একটি direct object দাবি করে। Direct object না আসলে যে বাক্যটি অসুম্পূর্ন মনে হয়, সেই বাক্যে transitive verb ব্যবহৃত হয়।

Example:

He is watching (এখানে, টেলিভিশন একটি direct object. এটি ছাড়া বাক্য অসুম্পূর্ন।)
I saw a (এখানে, Tiger একটি object.)

2. Intransitive Verb:

Intransitive verb এর কোন object প্রয়োজন হয় না। তারা নিজে নিজেই বাক্য সম্পূর্ণ করতে পারে।

They don’t have a direct object.

Example:

He reached.
He goes to school.

Linking verbs:

Linking verb সাধারণত ওই সকল verb কে বুঝায় যেগুলো কোন কাজ সম্পন্ন করে না বরং subject এর সাথে বাক্যের বাকি অংশের যোগাযোগ স্থাপন করে। সাধারণত, Be verb গুলো যখন main verb হিসেবে sentence এ ব্যবহৃত হয় তখন সেগুলোকে Linking Verbsবলা যায়।

Linking Verbs can behave both either main verbs or auxiliary verbs. They do not refer to actions, but represent a state of being, need, opinion, desire or senses. For example, be verbs (am, is, are, was, were, have, has, had….) are the example of no-action verbs. Smell, look, taste, sound, etc. are also called no-action verbs.

Example:

He is a teacher.
They have three children.

Auxiliary Verb:

Auxiliary Verb হচ্ছে সাহায্যকারী verb। তারা present participle এবং past participle কে বাক্যে verb হিসেবে কাজ করতে সাহায্য করে। তাদের নিজস্ব কোন সম্পূর্ণ অর্থ না থাকলেও ব্যাকরণগত দিক থেকে বাক্যের গঠণ নির্মানে তাদের গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা রয়েছে।

Auxiliary verbs are also called helping verbs. It helps another verb to form its mood, voice, tense, etc. They don’t have any meaning on their own, but they are very important to make the grammatical structure of the sentences. They help the main verbs.

They are two types:

Primary auxiliary:

Have, Do, and Be are known as primary auxiliaries.

Have

Have, has, had, having, had not .

Example: He has bought a new car. (এখানে has একটি auxiliary verb)

Do, does, done, to do, did, did not, does not,etc.

Example: He does not keep his work for tomorrow.

Am, is, are, was, were, be, to be, been, was not, were not, etc.

Example: He is watching the tournament.

Modal Auxiliary:

Modal Auxiliary সাধারণত মুল verb এর অর্থকে প্রভাবিত করে কিন্তু তারাও সাহায্যকারী verb হিসেবেই বাক্যে ব্যবহৃত হয়।

A modal auxiliary modifies the meaning of the main verb in some way. Shall, should, can, could, may, might, ought, ought to, will, would, must, etc. are known as modal auxiliary verbs.

Example:

He may come home tomorrow.
You should not run in the sun.
You can take rest now.

Gender specifies whether a noun or a pronoun is masculine, feminine, neuter or common.

Types of Gender:

Generally, gender is of four types:

Masculine Gender (পুং লিঙ্গ)

Masculine Gender:

যে noun বা pronoun নির্দেশ করে যে কোন প্রাণী পুরুষ তাকে Masculine Gender বলে।

The noun or pronoun which indicates that a living being is masculine is called a Masculine Gender.

Feminine Gender:

যে noun বা pronoun কোন প্রাণীর পুরুষ বা স্ত্রী যেকোন অবস্থাকেই নির্দেশ করতে পারে তাকে Common Gender বলে।

The noun or pronoun which can indicate that a living being is either masculine or feminine is called a Common Gender.

Some natural entities are considered as masculine as being signs of power. Such as thunder, summer, death, sun, etc.

আবার প্রাকৃতিক কিছু সত্ত্বাকে সৌন্দর্য্য বা কোমলতার প্রতীক হিসেবে বিবেচনা করে feminine হিসেবে গণ্য করা হয়।

Again some natural entities are considered as feminine as being signs of beauty or mildness. Such as night, moon, hope, peace, etc.

জাহাজ, দেশ, রেলগাড়ী প্রভৃতিকে সবসময় feminine হিসেবে গণ্য করা হয়।

Ship, country, train, etc are always considered as feminine genders.

Types of Number:

Singular Number:

Singular Number বা একবচন দ্বারা এমন noun বা pronoun-কে বোঝায় যা সংখ্যায় এক।

Singular Number denotes to such noun/pronoun which is one in number.

Example:

Pen (কলম)
Lion (সিংহ)
Eye, etc.

Plural Number:

Plural Number বা বহুবচন দ্বারা এমন noun বা pronoun-কে বোঝায় যা সংখ্যায় একাধিক।

Plural Number denotes to such noun/pronoun which is more than one in number.

Lions (সিংহগুলো)
Eyes, etc.

Singular number কে plural number-এপরিবর্তিত করার নিয়ম:

Rule 1:

সাধারণত: Singular number শব্দের শেষে “s” যুক্ত করে Plural Number করা হয়।

Generally, an “s” is added to the end of the singular number word to change it into a plural number.

Rule 2:

If the singular noun has “y” at its end and the letter before “y” is a consonant, ies is added instead of “y” to change it into the plural.

In case of some compound nouns “s” is added to nouns situated both sides of the hyphen (-) or vowels situated in the middle are changed to make it plural.

কিছু common noun দেখতে singular হলেও plural হিসেবে ব্যবহার করা হয়।

Some common nouns look like singular noun but are used as a plural. Such as the pious, the poor, the virtuous, the rich, etc.

Example:

The pious know how to be patient.
The rich are generally money minded.

Rule 15:

কিছু noun দেখতে plural হলেও singular হিসেবে ব্যবহার করা হয়।

Some nouns look like plural noun but are used as a singular. Such as politics, mathematics, statistics, physics, news, economics, wages, etc.

Example:

Physics is an interesting subject.
This news is really good.

Rule 16:

কিছু noun সবসময় singular হিসেবে ব্যবহার করা হয়।

Some nouns are always used as singular numbers. Such as money, business, alphabet, information, hair, etc.

Example:

Your business is really profitable.
Her hair is curly.

Rule 17:

কিছু noun সবসময় plural হিসেবে ব্যবহার করা হয়।

Some nouns are always used as plural numbers. Such as Billiards (খেলা), Draughts (খেলা), Measles (হাম যা একটি রোগ), Mumps (গাল গলা ফোলা রোগ), trousers (পাজামা), ‍scissors (কাঁচি), spectacles (চশমা), etc.

Example:

His spectacles are broken.
Karim’s trousers are black.

Rule 18:

বর্ণ, সংখ্যা এবং কোনকিছুর সংক্ষিপ্ত রূপকে Plural করতে (apostrophe)‘s ব্যবহার করা হয়।

Apostrophe (‘) and s are used to make the plural of letters, numbers, and abbreviations.

Example:

MBA’s will definitely attend this program.
There are five 2’s in this picture.

The word which we use instead of Noun is called Pronoun. A pronoun always replaces a noun.

Example:

Karim is a good boy. (এখানে Karim একটি Noun)
He goes to school every day.
We should take care of our children.

উপরের উদাহরণ গুলোতে Karim নামক একটি ছেলের সম্পর্কে বলা হয়েছে। প্রথম বার তার নাম Karim হিসেবে ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে,পরবর্তিতে যতবার তার নাম আসবে ততবার তার নামের পরবর্তে Pronoun হিসেবে He ব্যবহার করতে হবে। তেমনি বিভিন্ন ধরনের Noun অনুযায়ী Pronoun বসাতে হয়।

Personal pronouns:

I, it, he, they, she, we, and you are the personal pronouns.

Subject pronouns:

যে pronoun গুলো বাক্যে subject হিসেবে বসে সেগুলো Subject Pronoun.

Pronouns can be the subject of a sentence or clause. These pronouns are called subject pronouns.

Subject Pronouns: I, we, he, she, they, it.

I love banana.
He and I had a deal.

Object pronouns:

Object pronoun, subject pronoun এর বিপরীত। Subject pronoun এবং object pronoun এর form ভিন্নরকম।

Object pronoun গুলো হলঃ Me, us, him, her, them, it.

Demonstrative pronouns:

Demonstrative pronoun গুলো noun এর আগে বসে সেই noun কে নির্দিষ্ট করে। এগুলো সাধারণত adjective হিসেবে কাজ বেশি করে। কিন্তু যখন noun টি উহ্য থাকে তখন এগুলোকে demonstrative pronoun বলা হয়।

These pronouns indicate or demonstrate something specific in the sentence.

These, those, that, such and this are the demonstrative pronouns.

Example:

Should I bring those?
This is the last one that I left in the room.
Those are beautiful.

Interrogative pronouns:

কোন প্রশ্ন জিজ্ঞেস করার জন্যে যে pronoun ব্যবহার করা হয় তাকে interrogative pronounsবলে.

Interrogative pronouns are used to ask or make any questions.

Who, which, when, what, whose are the interrogative pronouns.

Example:

Who is your friend? (Used to ask a question about people)
What do you want for a meal? (Used to ask a question about object)
Whom do you want? (Used to ask a question about people)

Possessive pronouns:

কোন কিছুর মালিকানা বা অধিকার বোঝাতে possessive adjectives (my, our, their, his, her, its) এর পরে যে noun থাকে তার পরিবর্তে যে pronoun ব্যবহার করা হয়, সেগুলোই possessive pronoun.

Possessive pronouns replace the nouns of the possessive adjectives: my, our, your, her, his, and their. The possessive pronouns are mine, ours, yours, hers, his, its, and theirs. The pronoun ‘who’ also has a possessive form, whose.

Example:

Have you brought your jacket? I didn’t bring mine. (My jacket)
My book has stolen by someone. Can I see yours?
It is my dog, not his.

Relative pronouns:

বাক্যের ভিতরে কোন একটি noun সম্পর্কে নতুন তথ্য সংযুক্ত করার জন্য Relative pronounsব্যবহার করা হয়।

Relative pronouns are used to connect more information to a clause or sentence.

That, which, who, whom, whose, where are the relative pronouns.

Example:

The man who is wearing the black sun-glass is my uncle.
This is the place where I lived for two years.
The shirts that I bought the previous day were excellent.

Reflexive pronouns:

Subject এবং object একই ব্যাক্তি বা বস্তু হলে reflexive pronouns বসাতে হয়। Reflexive pronoun গুলো subject কেই object হিসেবে reflect করে।

When the subject itself comes again as an object, reflexive pronouns are used. They end with self/selves. Himself, myself, herself, themselves, etc. are the examples of reflexive pronouns.

Example:

He killed himself.
They hurt themselves when they tripped on the stairs.
I told myself not to waste the valuable time.

অন্য কোন noun বা pronoun এর উপরে গুরত্ব প্রদান করার জন্যে যেসকল pronoun ব্যবহৃত হয়, তাদেরকে Intensive pronouns বলা হয়। Reflexive pronoun এবং intensive pronoun দেখতে একই রকম কিন্তু intensive pronoun বাক্যে object হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয় না ।

Intensive pronouns end in self/selves and refer back to another noun or pronoun to emphasize in the sentence.

Noun refers to any kind of name. Means, whatever we are seeing and watching around us is noun.

Nouns are used to name persons, things, animals, events, places, ideas, etc.

Example:

Karim does not like to go to school. এই বাক্যে Karim একজন ব্যক্তির নাম।
Kuwait is a Muslim country. এখানে কুয়েত একটি দেশের নাম।
Diamond is very valuable. ডায়মন্ড একটি বস্তুর নাম।

Nouns are classified into five types.

Proper Noun (নাম বাচক বিশেষ্য)
Common Noun (জাতিবাচক বিশেষ্য)
Collective Noun (সমষ্টিবাচক বিশেষ্য)

Proper Noun (নাম বাচক বিশেষ্য):

যে Noun দ্বারা কোন নির্দিষ্ট ব্যক্তি, বস্তু বা স্থানের নাম বোঝায় তাকে Proper Noun বলে।

A proper noun refers to specific names of persons, things, places, etc. and always start with a capital letter.

Example:

I like the story of Shakespeare. (Shakespeare নির্দিষ্ট একজন ব্যক্তির নাম)
We planned to visit Sylhet. ( Sylhet নির্দিষ্ট একটি জায়গার নাম)
Have you ever seen the Tajmahal?(Tajmahal একটি স্থাপনার নাম)

Common Noun (জাতিবাচক বিশেষ্য):

যে Noun দ্বারা একই জাতীয় কোন ব্যক্তি, বস্তু বা প্রাণীকে নির্দিষ্ট করে না বুঝিয়ে সে জাতীয় সকলকে একসাথে বুঝায় তাকেই Common Noun বলে । যেমন, Student, Book, Dog, Flower etc.

A common noun refers to specific generic names of persons, places, things, etc. It is the opposite of Proper Noun.

Example:

Alex is a student. (Student দ্বারা সকল ছাত্র-ছাত্রীদেরকেই বুঝানো হয়েছে। নির্দিষ্ট কোন ছাত্র কিংবা ছাত্রী কে আলাদা করে বুঝায়নি)
Dogs can be very cute. ( Dog দ্বারা সকল জাতীয় কুকুর কে বুঝানো হয়েছে। সেটা যে কোন জাতের কিংবা ধরনের বা রঙের হতে পারে। যে কোন দেশের যে কোন কুকুর হতে পারে।)
You love ( এখানে flower দ্বারা সবরকম ফুলকে বুঝানো হয়েছে। এটা যে কোন জাতের বা ধরনের ফুল হতে পারে। হতে পারে গোলাপ কিংবা টিউলিপ, শিউলী অথবা রজনীগন্ধা কিংবা যে কোন ফুল হতে পারে।)

Collective Noun (সমষ্টিবাচক বিশেষ্য):

Collective Noun দ্বারা কোন ব্যক্তি, বস্তু বা প্রাণীর সমষ্টি কে বুঝায়। যেমন, Club, Army, Class, Family, etc.

Collective Noun, in English Grammar, refers to a group of things, persons or animals.

Example:

Our class took a trip to Sundarbans.
Bangladeshi Army is doing a great job in UN mission.
Each team contains eleven players.

Material Noun (বস্তুবাচক বিশেষ্য):

যে Noun দ্বারা ওজন আছে কিন্তু গণনা করা যায় না এমন কিছুর নাম বোঝায় তাকেই Material Noun বলে। যেমন, Gold, Glass, Salt, Iron, Silver, Cloth, Air, Milk, etc.

Material Noun is an uncountable noun. It’s substance or material that we can see and touch but can’t count.

Example:

You can purchase a gold ring for your sister.
We may attain salt from sea-water.
Cotton dress is my favorite.

Abstract Noun (গুণবাচক বিশেষ্য):

যে Noun দ্বারা কোন ব্যক্তি কিংবা বস্তুর গুণ, কাজের নাম কিংবা অবস্থা প্রকাশ করা হয় তাকে Abstract Noun বলে। যেমন, Liberty, anger, freedom, kindness, love, happiness, beauty,ইত্যাদি।

Abstract nouns express ideas, feelings, realizations, and qualities that we can’t see, touch, hear, taste or smell. We can understand and imagine it but can’t even see. It’s a feeling, not a physical thing.

Example:

My love for you cannot be measured.
His kindness is his real beauty.
Her beauty makes me crazy.

Punctuation একটি system যা একজন reader কে writer কিভাবে বাক্যটি সাজিয়েছেন তা সম্পর্কে ধারণা দেয়। আমরা কথা বলার সময় বিভিন্ন জায়গায় বিভিন্ন expressions এবং pause ব্যবহার করি যাতে শ্রোতা খুব সহজে আমাদের মনের ভাব বুঝতে পারে। Written language এ punctuations সেই pause এবং expressions প্রকাশ করে reader এর কাছে। Punctuations বাক্যকে reader এর কাছে সুস্পষ্ট করে।

Punctuations are the system of signs and symbols that show a reader how a sentence is organized and constructed, where to pause and where to stop, how to read and how to write a sentence. These are used to make sense and clarity in sentences.

Example:

I was walking through a forest Suddenly I heard a roar It was a tiger I was very afraid I was in a fix what to do I asked myself what will you do Sourav I found no answer

If we read the above passage at once, we will not understand it clearly as they are unorganized and we don’t know where to stop, where to pause and how long to pause. It makes no sense.

উপরের প্যাসাজটি পড়ে আমাদের বুঝতে ঝামেলা হবে কেননা এখানে কোন punctuation ব্যবহার করা হয় নি। যার ফলে, আমাদের কোথায় থামতে হবে এবং কোন কথাটি দ্বারা কী বুঝানো হয়েছে সেটা বুঝতে অসুবিধা হচ্ছে যদিও আমরা সব শব্দের অর্থ গুলো জানি। উপরের প্যাসেজটি সব দিক থেকেই সঠিক থাকার পরও শুধুমাত্র punctuation এর ব্যবহার না থাকায় লেখকের মনের ভাব প্রকাশে ব্যর্থ হয়েছে।

কিন্তু এখন, এই প্যাসেজটিকেই যদি আমরা সঠিক punctuation ব্যবহার করে লিখি, তাহলে এটি তার সম্পূর্ণ মনের ভাব খুব সহজেই প্রকাশ করে।

The full-stop (.):

Period কে British English এ বলা হয় full-stop. Period/full-stop ইংরেজি ভাষার সবচেয়ে বেশি ব্যবহৃত punctuation যা বাক্যের সমাপ্তি নির্দেশ করে। প্রশ্নবোধক আর বিস্ময়সূচক বাক্য ছাড়া সকল বাক্যের শেষেই period ব্যবহার করা হয়। এটি সাধারণত abbreviation এর ক্ষেত্রেও ব্যবহার করা হয়।

The period is a small dot. It is the most common form of punctuations that used to end a sentence in the English language. It is also used for abbreviation and website addresses.

Example:

His name is Kamal.
The beggar was begging.
He is playing with a football.

⇒ Statement জাতীয় বাক্যের শেষে।

Example:

I love to travel.
The show starts on Thursday.

⇒ Command জাতীয় বাক্যের শেষে।

Example:

Do the work properly.
Do not run in the sun.

⇒ Indirect question সম্বলিত বাক্যের শেষে।

Example:

Mousumi asked me why I didn’t attend the party.
He wondered why Akash was not present.

The comma (,):

Comma সাধারণত একটি sentence এর ভিতরে বিভিন্ন clause, phrase, অথবা word গুলোকে আলাদা করার জন্যে ব্যবহৃত হয়।

A comma slightly breaks the different parts of the sentence and makes the meaning of sentences clear by grouping and separating words, phrases, and clauses.

Example:

Bangladesh, an over-populated country, is not rich.
His uncle, who came here yesterday, is a police inspector.
The man, who was running to and fro, was a thief.

Commas are used in different ways:

⇒ একটি list এর অনেকগুলো item কে আলাদা করার জন্যে comma ব্যবহার করা হয়।

Example:

The colours in his drawing room are green, black, and blue.
He has three dogs, two cats, and four hens.

⇒ Direct speech কে indirect speech থেকে আলাদা করার জন্যে inverted comma র পাশাপাশি সাধারণ একটি comma ও ব্যবহার করা হয়।

Example:

He replied, “No need to come today”.
I replied, “I’ll do the work within two days”.

⇒ দুটি Clause কে আলাদা করার জন্যে comma ব্যবহার করা হয়।

Example:

I saw her in London, where I lived for twenty years.
Although he tried his level best, he could not manage the money.

⇒ দুটি adjective যখন usual order এর ব্যতিক্রম হিসেবে আসে তখন তাদেরকে comma দ্বারা আলাদা করা হয়।

Example:

He has a small, red dog.
He has a short, little sister.

⇒ ‘Month Day, year.’ ফরম্যাটে তারিখ লেখার ক্ষেত্রে comma ব্যবহার করা হয়।

Example:

It was established on April 12, 1992.
The class will start on October 19, 2017.

⇒ কাউকে নাম ধরে সরাসরি সম্মোধনের ক্ষেত্রে নামের আগে comma হয়।

Example:

Thanks a lot for your hospitality, Ashraf.

⇒ Participial phrase কে মুল clause থেকে আলাদা করার জন্যে comma ব্যবহার করা হয়।

Example:

Watching the news, we came to know the matter.
Hearing the voice, I knew you.

⇒ Tag question কে আলাদা করতে comma ব্যবহার করা হয়।

Example:

He knows the matter, doesn’t he?
He did the work, didn’t he?

The note of exclamation (!):

⇒ আকস্মিক এবং আবেগকম্পিত কোন expression প্রকাশ করার জন্যে exclamatory sentence এ Note of exclamation ব্যবহার করা হয়।

Example:

Hurrah! We’ve won the game.
How beautiful you are!

⇒ কাউকে Warn (সতর্ক) করার ক্ষেত্রেও exclamation mark ব্যবহৃত হয়।

Example:

⇒ While walking through a forest, a father suddenly told his daughter, “Watch out!”

Here, the sign note of exclamation tells us that the father is scared and called his daughter. Without this exclamation note, this statement is not much important.

⇒ Direct order এর ক্ষেত্রেও exclamation mark ব্যবহৃত হয়।

Example:

“Do not enter the room!”

If you see the above sentence and the exclamation sign on a door, it will help you to catch your attention that you must not enter the room. If you enter, it may be dangerous for you.

⇒ প্রবল অনুভূতি যেমন surprise, happiness, feelings, etc. বুঝাতে exclamation mark ব্যবহার করা হয়।

Example:

Anger: “Stop your mouth!”
Fear: “The snake is going to bite the child!”
Happiness: “Good to see you!”
Surprise: “The train is late in Japan!”

⇒ Casual writing এর ক্ষেত্রেও মাঝে মাঝে note of exclamation ব্যবহার করা হয়।

Example:

She is leaving me!
You are talking like a fool!

The note of interrogation (?):

The note of interrogation is used to indicate the end of the direct question in a sentence. Sometimes, it appears in the sentence.

সরাসরি প্রশ্নবোধক বাক্যের শেষে note of interrogation ব্যবহার করা হয়।

Example:

Where are you going?
“Do you love me?” he asked me.

⇒ It can also be used in a bracket to show the unconvinced mood/situation of a writer.

Example:

The train timetable purports to be accurate (?).

The semicolon (;):

The semicolon is used when we need to pause shorter than a full-stop but longer than a comma.

Comma র চেয়ে বেশি এবং full-stop এর চেয়ে কম pause এর জন্যে semicolon ব্যবহার করা হয়।

⇒ দুইটা একইরকম বাক্যকে সংযুক্ত করার জন্যে semicolon ব্যবহার করা হয়।

Example:

My car is green; my brother’s is red.

⇒ Finally, similarly, also, besides, however, next, then, meanwhile, therefore, likewise, furthermore, ইত্যাদি conjunctive adverb এর আগে সাধারণত semicolon ব্যবহার করা হয়।

Example:

I’ll go to the school; then I’ll watch a movie.

⇒ Location, date, name এবং descriptionএর list বানানোর ক্ষেত্রে semicolon ব্যবহার করা হয়।

The colon (:):

The colon introduces a word or words, a list or a quotation, and a phrase.

কোন শব্দ বা বাক্যের ব্যাখ্যা করার জন্যে colon ব্যবহার করা হয়। Colon এর পর একটি শব্দও থাকতে পারে আবার অনেকগুলো শব্দও থাকতে পারে।

Example:

He wants only one thing: a job.
He likes many foods: apples, pineapples, oranges, and broccoli.

⇒ Colon এর পরের অংশকে গুরুত্ব প্রদান করার জন্যেও colon ব্যবহার করা হয়।

Example:

He was fit for the job as he had experience in one field: teaching.

⇒ Salutation অথবা greeting এর পর colon ব্যবহার করা হয়।

The quotation mark (“ “):

A quotation mark is used in a written language to quote the exact words or sentences which said by someone.

Quotation mark সাধারণত অন্য কারো উল্লেখিত বাণী/লেখনী কে উদ্ধৃতি হিসেবে বাক্যে নিয়ে আসার জন্যে ব্যবহার করা হয়।

Example:

She said, “Come in.”
He said, “Go to the market and bring some rice.”

⇒ Poems, short stories, chapters, articles, ইত্যাদি থেকে উদ্ধৃতি দেয়ার জন্যে quotation mark ব্যবহার করা হয়।

Example:

My favourite poem by Jashim Uddin is “Kabar”.
Have you ever heard the name of the article “How to speak English with Better Accent”?
“The humanity” is the third chapter of this book.

⇒ একটি শব্দের অর্থ তার প্রথাগত/পারিভাষিক অর্থ না বুঝিয়ে অন্য কিছু বুঝালে সেই শব্দকে quotation mark এর মধ্যে ব্যবহার করা হয়।

Example:

She was “delighted” to see you. (She was not very delighted)
What does the “doctor” claim? (The speaker doesn’t really think this person is a doctor)

⇒ বাক্যের ভিতরে একটি শব্দকে যদি বাক্যের অংশ হিসেবে ব্যবহার না করে আলাদা একটি শব্দ হিসেবে উল্লেখ করতে হয় তখন তাকে quotation mark দিয়ে আলাদা করা হয়।

Search the word “colonel” from the dictionary.
“Abdomen” comes from Latin.

The apostrophe (‘):

The main two uses of apostrophe are discussed below:

⇒ To show possession: মালিকানা বোঝানোর জন্যঃ

Example:

Cat’s house = the house of the cat
Akash’s car = Akash owns the car
Kazi’s kitchen = the owner name of the kitchen is Kazi.

⇒ যে শব্দের শেষে ‘s’ থাকে সেগুলোতে apostrophe র পরে আলাদা করে ‘s’ যোগ করতে হয় না।

⇒ An apostrophe shows missing letters or numbers: বিলুপ্ত বর্ণকে চিহ্নিত করার জন্যেও apostrophe ব্যবহার করা হয়।

The hyphen (-):

Hyphens are generally used to connect two words or to connect split words such as numbers and job titles.

Hyphen সাধারণত দুইটি word কে সংযুক্ত করার জন্যে ব্যবহার করা হয়।

⇒ 21 থেকে 99 পর্যন্ত প্রতিটি সংখ্যার লিখিতরূপে hyphen ব্যবহার করা হয়।

Parentheses (), brackets [], and braces {}:

Parentheses ():

(Parentheses is plural, and parenthesis is a singular word)

The information which the parentheses provide is not essential to the meaning of the sentence. It gives an additional, or extra, information.

কিছু অতিরিক্ত তথ্য কোন বাক্যে যোগ করার জন্যে parentheses এর সাহায্য নেয়া হয়।

Example:

Shahadat (the boy from Bidyakut Amar High School) helped me much to complete the homework.
I went to pabna (which is famous for the mental hospital) yesterday.

Brackets []:

These are used for comments, clarifications and corrections and also for extra information.

বাক্যের মধ্যে কোন ব্যক্তিগত মন্তব্য অথবা কোন নির্দিষ্ট শব্দ কাকে চিহ্নিত করে তা বোঝানোর জন্যে brackets ব্যবহার করা হয়।

Example:

He can drive 60 [miles per hour] on the highway.
He [Alif] is my best friend.

Braces {}:

Braces look like curly brackets. These are not common in written Language that’s why we don’t use it in the English language. But these are very common in Mathematics and science.

ইংরেজি ভাষায় braces এর ব্যবহার শুধুমাত্র mathematics এই রয়েছে। বাক্যে এর কোন ব্যবহার নেই।

The way of reporting the speech of a speaker is called narration.

একজন বক্তার বক্তব্য প্রধাণত: দুই উপায়ে ব্যক্ত হয়ে থাকে:

Direct Speech
Indirect Speech (Sometimes called Reported Speech)

Direct Speech:

Direct speech হল বক্তার দ্বারা বলা হুবহু বক্তব্য যা quotation mark বা উদ্ধৃতি চিহ্নের মধ্যে থাকে।

Direct speech is the exact speech said by the speaker which is put within quotation marks.

Example:

He said to his friend, “I like sweets very much.”

Direct speech এর মধ্যে দুটি অংশ থাকে:

Reporting Speech and
Reported Speech

একটি comma (,) এবং দুটি inverted comma (““) এই অংশ দুটিকে একে অপর থেকে পৃথক করে।

I. Reporting Speech:

Reporting speech হল inverted comma-র বাইরের অংশ অর্থাৎ comma-র আগের অংশ। এখানে দুটি পক্ষ জড়িত থাকে, বক্তা এবং সে যাকে বলছে।

উপরের উদাহরণে, He said to his friend, হল reporting speech.

Reporting speech is the part which is outside the inverted commas, i.e., the part before the comma. It involves two parties the reporter and to whom s/he is reporting.

II. Reported Speech:

Reported Speech হল inverted comma-র মধ্যেকার অংশ।

Reported Speech is the part which is within the inverted commas.

উপরের উদাহরণে, “I like sweets very much.”-হল reported speech।

Indirect Speech:

Indirect speech, যা reported speech নামেও পরিচিত, তা হল বক্তার বক্তব্যের সারাংশ যা অন্য কেউ ব্যক্ত করে।

Indirect speech, also known as reported speech, is the substance of the speaker’s speech given by someone else.

Example:

ধরুন উপরের উদাহরণের indirect speech।

He told his friend that he liked sweets very much.

Indirect speech or reported speech-এ নিম্নোক্ত বিষয়গুলো লক্ষ করা যায়:

কোন inverted comma ব্যবহৃত হয়না, reporting speech এবং reported speech একে অপরের সাথে conjunction যেমন: ‘that’, ‘if’, or ‘whether’ প্রভৃতি দ্বারা যুক্ত থাকে।
No inverted commas are used, reporting speech and reported speechare joined with each other by conjunctions like ‘that’, ‘if’, or ‘whether’ etc.
Reporting speech এবং reported speech এর মাঝে কোন comma থাকেনা।
Reporting speech and reported speech have no comma between them.
Full stop বা Period sign ব্যবহৃত হয় প্রশ্নবোধক বা বিস্ময়বোধক চিহ্নের পরিবর্তে।
Reporting speech-এর tense আগের মতই থাকবে।
The tense of reporting speech is the same as before.
Interrogative, exclamatory, operative এবং imperative sentence-কে assertive sentence-এ পরিণত করা হয়।
Interrogative, exclamatory, operative and imperative sentences are converted to the assertive sentence.
Reported speech-এর tense, reporting speech-এর tense-কে অনুসরণ করে।
Tense of reported speech follows the tense of reporting speech.
Reporting verb, reported speech অনুযায়ী পরিবর্তিত হয়। উপরের উদাহরণে, told একটি reporting verb এবং liked একটি reported verb। Sentence-এর ধরন অনুযায়ী বিভিন্ন ধরনের reporting verb ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন: asked, offered, promised প্রভৃতি।
Reporting verb is changed according to the reported speech. In the above example, told is a reporting verb and liked is a reported verb. Different reporting verbs are used on the basis of the type of sentence. Such as, asked, offered, promised, etc.
Reported speech-এর pronoun SON নামের একটি নিয়মে পরিবর্তিত হয়, যেখানে, S=Subject, O=Object এবং N=No change। এই নিয়ম অনুযায়ী, first person, reporting verb-এর subject হিসেবে পরিবর্তিত হয়; second person, reporting verb-এর object হিসেবে পরিবর্তিত হয় এবং third person-এর ক্ষেত্রে কোন পরিবর্তন হয়না।
The pronoun of reported speech is changed according to a rule called SON where, S=Subject, O=Object and N=No change. According to this rule, the first person is changed to the subject of reporting verb; the second person is changed to the object of reporting verb, and in case of the third person, there is no change.
Direct speech-এর adverb-গুলোর পরিবর্তন করা হয়।
The adverbs of the direct speech are changed.

1. Present Indefinite Tense এর subject যদি third person singular number হয় তাহলে verb এর শেষে s, es যোগ হবে। কিন্তু অন্য কোন tense এর ক্ষেত্রে হবে না।

He eats rice.
He plays football.

Present Indefinite Tense এর subject যদি plural number হয় তাহলে verb এর শেষে s/es যোগ হবে না।

They play football.
They eat rice.

2. Present Indefinite Tense এর subject, third person singular number হলেও সেটি যদি negative sentence হয় তাহলে does not ব্যবহৃত হবে। তখন verb এর শেষে s/es যোগ হবেনা।

He does not go to school.
Ashish does not eat rice.

3. Past tense or future tense হলে verb এর শেষে s/es যোগ হবে না। তখন সেই tense এর structure অনুযায়ী verb বসবে।

He went to school.
He will go to school.

4. Modal Auxiliary verb (যেমন: can, could, may, might, shall, should, will, would, ought to, need, dare, have to, must etc.) এর পরে verb এর present form বসে এবং verb এর সাথে কোন কিছু যোগ হয় না।

He can do the work.
I shall go to the school.
You must come home.
He should study hard.

5. বাক্যটি যদি universal truth (চিরন্তন সত্য) হয়, habitual fact (অভ্যাসগত কাজ) বোঝায় তাহলে present indefinite tense হবে।

The sun rises in the east.
Ice floats on water.

6. Sentence টি passive voice হলে এবং modal auxiliary verb (can, could, may, might, shall, should, will, would, ought to, need, dare, have to, must etc.) এর পরে be + past participle form of verb বসে।

It can be done by you.
All the fruits could be taken.

7. Had, rather, let, would better, had better, need not, do not, does not, did not, did never, ইত্যাদি এর পর present form of verb বসে।

I let them use my shoes.
I had better go to the market by this time.
I need not do the work.

8. বাক্যে have/has থাকলে সেটি present perfect tense হবে।

He has done the work.
They have eaten rice.

9. Sentence এ yet, just, just now, recently, already, lately, ever ইত্যাদি থাকলে present perfect tense হবে।

He has taken his lunch just now.
They have already come home.
I have met him recently.

10. Sentence এ yesterday, ago, long ago, last year, last week, last month, that day, day before, ইত্যাদি থাকলে past indefinite tense হবে।

He came home
I went to Cox's Bazar last month.
A long time ago, there lived a poor farmer.

11. To এর পরে সবসময় verb এর present form বসে।

You need to do the work in time.
He went to the market to buy a shirt.

12. Since বা for এর পর সময়ের উল্লেখ থাকলে সেটি present perfect continuous tense হবে।

He has been doing the work since the morning.
It has been raining for two hours.

13. If দ্বারা যুক্ত clause টি যদি present indefinite tense হয় তাহলে পরের clause টি future indefinite tense হবে।

If he comes, I’ll go.
If you work hard, you’ll shine in life.

14. With a view to/look forward to এর পর verb এর সাথে ing যোগ হবে।

I’m looking forward to getting a job.
I went shopping with a view to buying a shirt.

15. By এর পর verb এর সাথে ing যোগ হবে।

She expressed her feelings by crying.
By digging the land, she planted trees.

16. For, of, in, without, with, before, after ইত্যাদি preposition এর পরে verb এর সাথে ing যোগ হয়।

I’ve never been tired of going there.
She can’t go without waiting for me.

17. Mind, would you mind, past, worth, could not help, cannot help এর পরে verb এর সাথে ing যোগ হয়।

Would you mind giving me the book?
He cannot help doing the assignment.

18. Sentence এর শুরুতে যদি would that থাকে তাহলে subject এর পর could বসে এবং এরপর verb এর present form বসে।

Would that I could be a writer like Humayun Ahmed.
Would that I could buy a Toyota car.

19. To be/having/got থাকলে verb এর past participle form হয়।

The assignment is to be completedimmediately.
The thief ran away having seen the police.
I got the certificates sent by the Headmaster.

20. ব্র্যাকেটে (be) থাকলে person, number এবং tense অনুযায়ী am/is/are/was/were/been হবে।

It (be) two years ago.
It was two years ago.
Allah (be) everywhere.
Allah is everywhere.
One of my friends (be) an honest person.
One of my friends is/was an honest person.

21. বর্তমান কালে চলছে এমন কোন কাজ বোঝালে present continuous tense হয়। (এসব ক্ষেত্রে সাধারণত at present/now/at the moment ইত্যাদি adverb ব্যবহৃত হয়।)

He is watching the Television at this moment.
They are playing football.
Now, they are doing their assignment.

22. If + Present Indefinite + Future Indefinite (if যুক্ত clause টি present indefinite tense হলে পরের clause টি হবে future indefinite)

If you come, I’ll go.
If you drink milk, you will be healthy.

23. যদি had/if যুক্ত clause টি past indefinite tense হয় তাহলে পরের clause টি তে subject এর পর would/could/might বসে এবং verb এর present form হয়।

If he came, I would go to the market.
If I were rich enough, I would help the poor.

যদি had/if যুক্ত clause টি past perfect tense হয় তাহলে পরের clause টি তে subject এর পর would have/could have/might have বসে এবং verb এর past participle form হয়।

If he had come, I would have gone to the market.
If you had walked fast, you could have reached the station.

24. Wish/fancy/it is time/it is high time ইত্যাদি থাকলে verb এর past tense হবে।

I wish I won the first prize.
It is high time you changed your bad habits.
I fancy I flew in the sky.

25. As if/as though থাকলে were বসে।

He speaks as if he were the leader.
He acts as though he were a hero.

26. Each, every, everyone, any, anyone, many a, everybody, everything, anybody, nobody, no one, nothing, anything, someone, something, one of, either, neither ইত্যাদি থাকলে verb এর singular number ব্যবহৃত হয়।

Each of the students was present.
Every father dedicates his life to his children.
One of the students was very talented.
Neither of the two brothers waspresent in the class.

27. While এর পর verb থাকলে সেটির সাথে ing যোগ হয়। কিন্তু while এর পর subject থাকলে এর অংশটি past continuous tense হয়।

While walking through the zoo, I saw a
While it was raining, I was watching a movie.

28. অনেক সময় একই স্থান, দৈর্ঘ্য বা পরিমাপ বোঝালে subject দেখতে plural মনে হলেও verb টি singular form হয়।

Twenty miles was a long way.
Two hundred miles is not a long distance in this modern era.

29. Main clause এর verb টি past tense হলে ও পরের অংশে next day, next week, next month, next year ইত্যাদি উল্লেখ থাকলে subject এর পরে should/would বসে।

He told that he would go home the next week.
She said that she would buy land next year.

30. After এর পরের এবং before এর আগের clause টি past perfect tense হবে এবং অন্য clause টি past indefinite tense হবে।

The train had left the station before we reached.
The doctor came after the patient had died.

31. Passive voice এর সময় tense ও person অনুযায়ী auxiliary verb ও verb এর past participle form বসে।

32. ব্যতিক্রমগুলো ছাড়া Principle clause এর verb যদি past tense হয় তাহলে subordinate clause এর verb ও past tense হবে এবং একটি present tense হলে অন্যটিও present tense হবে।

Article হলো মূলত adjective যা কোনো noun নির্দিষ্ট না অনির্দিষ্ট তা নির্দেশ করে ।

Articles are basically adjectives defining a noun as specific or unspecific. The and a/an are called articles.

Example:

The boy was standing on the
After working for a long time, a cup of tea really stimulates us.

প্রথম উদাহরণে, article “the’ a boy কে এবং আবার a roof কে নির্দিষ্ট করে নির্দেশ করছে।

দ্বিতীয় উদাহরণে, article “a” অনির্দিষ্টভাবে যেকোনো “long time” কে এবং যেকোনো “cup of tea” কে নির্দেশ করছে।

Classification:

In English, articles are classified into twotypes:

Definite Article

“The” শব্দটিকে definite article বলা হয় । এটি nounকে নির্দিষ্ট করে বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হয় ।

“The” is referred to as a definite article. It is used to modify specific or particular nouns.

Example:

I really liked the book you gave me.

এখানে article “the” নির্দিষ্ট করে বইটিকে বোঝাচ্ছে যা আমাকে কেউ দিয়েছে ।

Indefinite Article

A/an শব্দটিকে indefinite article বলা হয় । অনির্দিষ্ট noun কে বোঝাতে A/an ব্যবহৃত হয় ।

The word a/an is called an indefinite article. A/an is used to refer to non-specific or non-particular nouns.

Example:

I am looking for a book of arts.

এখানে article “a” সাধারণভাবে যেকোনো arts এর বইকে বোঝাচ্ছে ।

I am looking for an English book.

এখানে article “an” সাধারণভাবে যেকোনো English বইকে বোঝাচ্ছে ।

Use of Articles:

নিচে বিভিন্ন স্থানে article এর ব্যবহার বর্ণিত হলো ।

General and Exceptional Use of a/an:

সাধারণত একটি consonant দিয়ে শুরু হওয়া শব্দকে অনির্দিষ্টভাবে বোঝাতে “a” ব্যবহৃত হয়। একটি vowel (a, e, i , o, u) দিয়ে শুরু হওয়া শব্দকে অনির্দিষ্টভাবে বোঝাতে “an” ব্যবহৃত হয় ।

Generally, “a” is used before a word starting with a consonant to denote a non-specific thing. “An” is placed before a word that starts with a vowel (a, e, i, o, u) to denote a non-specific thing.

Example:

I saw a dog there.
I saw an ant on the cake.

এই নিয়মটির কিছু ব্যাতিক্রম আছে । যেমন: যদি কোনো শব্দের প্রথম অক্ষর consonant হয় কিন্তু এটি vowel এর মতো করে উচ্চারিত হয় তবে এর আগে “a” এর পরিবর্তে “an” ব্যবহৃত হয় ।

Example:

She is an honorable member of the Parliament.
My father was an honest doctor.

আবার কোনো শব্দ যদি vowel দিয়ে শুরু হয় কিন্তু consonant এর মতো উচ্চারিত হয় তবে এর আগে “an” এর পরিবর্তে “a” ব্যবহৃত হয় ।

Example:

This is a UK based company.
This is a university where students can study in a sound environment.

General Use of “The”:

Singular/Plural noun কে নির্দিষ্ট করতে এর আগে “The” ব্যবহৃত হয় ।

“The” is used before singular/plural nouns to specify it.

Example:

The student I met at the library was really
The boys of this school are good at Football.

Indefinite/ Definite article before an Adjective:

কখনো কখনো একটি article একটি adjective দ্বারা নির্দিষ্ট noun কে নির্দেশ করে । শব্দের ক্রমটা এমন হবে :

Sometimes an article denotes a noun modified by an adjective. The order of the words will be as follows:

Article+ Adjective+ Noun

Example:

I saw the little girl singing in the party.
This is a small gift from
I heard an interesting news on TV.

Articles before Countable and Uncountable Nouns:

A/an শুধুমাত্র countable noun এর পূর্বে ব্যাবহৃত হয় ।

A/an can be used before the countable nouns only.

Example:

Give me a glass of water.
She wants a bottle of milk.

আপনারা বলতে পারবেন না “Give me a water” /“She wants a milk” ।

“Uncountable noun” গুলোর আগে The ব্যাবহৃত হতে পারে অথবা article কে সম্পূর্ণভাবে বাদ দেয়া যায় ।

Example:

“Give me the water” (specific water) or “Give me water” (any water).
“She bought the milk from this market.” (specific milk) Alternatively, “She bought milk from this market.” (any milk)

Never use an article before a Pronoun:

Pronoun এর আগে কখনো article ব্যবহার করা উচিত না । Pronoun, noun এর পরিবর্তে ব্যবহৃত হয় কারণ একই noun বারবার ব্যবহৃত হলে শুনতে খারাপ লাগে । Pronoun একটি noun কে নির্দেশ করে তাই এর আগে article ব্যবহারের কোনো প্রয়োজন নেই । যদি আপনি ব্যবহার করেন তবে দুবার নির্দেশ করা হবে যা ভুল ।

Articles should never be used before pronouns. Pronouns are used instead of nouns because if you use the same noun time and again, it will not sound good. A pronoun is specifying a noun, so there is no need to use an article before it. If you use, there would be a double specification which is wrong.

Example:

She is reading the my (Incorrect)
She is reading my book. (Correct)

Never use an article before Real Nouns:

Real noun এর আগে কখনো article ব্যবহার করা উচিত না । যেমন: মানুষ, স্থান, দেশ, ভাষা, পাঠ্য বিষয় , পাহাড় , হ্রদ , মহাদেশ প্রভৃতির নাম ।

Articles should never be used before real nouns, i.e., names of people, places, countries, languages, academic subjects, mountains, lakes, islands, continents, etc.

Example:

The Argentina played really (Incorrect)
Argentina played really (Correct)
She is learning the Chinese. (Incorrect)
She is learning Chinese. (Correct)
She is good at the Mathematics. (Incorrect)
She is good at Mathematics. (Correct)

This rule has few exceptions in the following cases:

A union of countries (কিছু দেশের সংযুক্তি ) like the United States, the Netherlands etc.
A group of some lakes (কিছু হ্রদের সমাহার ) like the East African lakes, etc.
Ranges of mountains (পর্বতমালা ) like the Rockies or the Andes, etc.
Island chains (দ্বীপপুঞ্জ ) like the Hebrides, the Canary Islands, etc.
Names of oceans, seas, and rivers (সাগর, মহাসাগর, নদীর নাম) like the Ganges, the Pacific, the Atlantic, etc.
Points on the globe (গ্লোবের বিন্দু ) like the North pole, the South pole, etc.
Geographical areas (ভৌগোলিক স্থান ) like the East, the West, the Middle East, etc.
Peninsulas, forests, deserts, and gulfs (উপদ্বীপ, বন , মরুভুমি , উপসাগর) like the Iberian Peninsula, the Black Forest, the Sundarbans, the Sahara, the Persian Gulf, etc.

Implied Article or Zero Article:

কখনো কখনো কিছু নির্দিষ্ট noun এর আগে article থাকেনা কিন্তু article বোঝায় । এদেরকে implied article/ “zero articles” বলে ।

Sometimes articles are omitted before certain nouns where the article is implied but not actually visible. These implied articles are also called “zero articles”.

Example:

Let’s go for a long drive tonight. (Incorrect)
Let’s go for long drive (Correct)
The fortune favors the brave. (Incorrect)
Fortune favors the brave. (Correct)
The perseverance is a valuable quality of human (Incorrect)
Perseverance is a valuable quality of human (Correct)

The modern English alphabet consists of 26 letters, and they are known as Latin alphabet. The word “alphabet” itself came from the Latin word “alphabetum, ” and this Latin word came from the Greek words ‘alpha’ and ‘beta.'

Alphabet শব্দটি ল্যাটিন শব্দ alphabetum থেকে এসেছে। আধুনিক ইংরেজী বর্ণমালায় মোট ছাব্বিশটি alphabet আছে।

The alphabet is known as the set of letters or symbols. These are used to present the basic set of speech sounds of a language.

Alphabet গুলোকে কোন ভাষার বর্ণ বা সংকেত বলা হয়।

The English alphabet has 26 letters that start with ‘a’ and end with ‘z’. Each letter of English alphabet has two forms: capital and small letters. Large letters are often called Capital Letters. Sometimes, they are also called caps.

প্রত্যেকটা ইংরেজি বর্ণের দুটি করে পদ্ধতি আছে। একটাকে বড় অক্ষর ও অপরটাকে ছোট অক্ষরের বর্ণ বলা হয়।

Small and large letters together:

Large letters: A-B-C-D-E-F-G-H-I-J-K-L-M-N-O-P-Q-R-S-T-U-V-W-X-Y-Z

Small letters: a-b-c-d-e-f-g-h-i-j-k-l-m-n-o-p-q-r-s-t-u-v-w-x-y-z

Sometimes, small letters are called lowercase letters, and capital letters are called uppercase letters. These terms are used during the old days of printing before the computer because the old metal blocks for setting type were kept two different cases, one is lower case for small letters, and another is upper case for large letters.

All of the 26 alphabets are classified into vowels and consonants. From these 26 letters, five letters are vowels, and the remaining 21 letters are known as consonants.

Vowels:

A, E, I, O and U are called vowels.

A, E, I, O, এবং U হচ্ছে vowel .

Vowels are speech sounds created by the open configuration of the vocal tract. By pairing with consonants, vowels make syllables.

Vowel গুলো consonant গুলোর সাথে মিলে syllable তৈরি করে।

Examples of vowels in words:

Sat, egg, diagram, ultrasonography, etc.

Here, in the word ‘sat,' a is the vowel. In ‘egg,' e is the vowel. In ‘diagram,' a, and i, are the vowels. Similarly, in the word ‘ultrasonography,' a, o, and u are the vowels.

Consonants:

Vowel ছাড়া বাকি ১৯ টি অক্ষর সব consonant.

Apart from vowels, rest of the alphabets are called consonants. A consonant must pair with (a) vowel(s) to make a syllable. Without pairing with vowels, consonants can’t make any syllable.

So, the consonant is the basic speech sound in which the breath is at least partly obstructed, and it can be combined with vowels to make syllables.

একটা শব্দে মাত্র একটি Vowel ছাড়া বাকি সবগুলোই consonant হতে পারে।

Example of consonants:

a) Carry. C, r, r, and y are the consonants.

b) Story. s, t, r, and y are consonants.

c) Earning. r, n, and g are consonants.

চুল আঁচড়াতে আঁচড়াতে বউ জিজ্ঞেস করলো,

- বিকালে তো ফাইনাল খেলা.. তুমি কোন দল সাপোর্ট করবা??

- তুমি যেই দল সাপোর্ট করবা আমি তার বিপরীতটা...

বউ উচ্ছাস নিয়ে বলল,

- আমি ইংল্যান্ড সাপোর্ট করি...

- হু, দেখেশুনে তো ভাল দলটাই নিবা তুমি

- বেশি কথা বলবা না, আমি বাংলাদেশ বাদ পড়ে যাওয়ার পর থেকেই ইংল্যান্ড সাপোর্ট করি...

- হু করবাই তো!! তোমার আর ইংল্যান্ড দলের সাথে তো কোন পার্থক্য নাই..

বউ এক বালতি কিউরিওসিটি নিয়ে জিজ্ঞেস করলো,

- মানে!! কোথায় মিল পেলে তুমি??
