La France du football avait les yeux rivés sur le JT de TF1 ce soir. Le sélectionneur national Didier Deschamps y dévoilait sa liste des 23 Bleus pour le Mondial en Russie. Une annonce qui s’est faite attendre puisque Deschamps avait décidé de la reporter pour cause de finale de Ligue Europa entre l’Olympique de Marseille et l’Atlético Madrid ce mercredi. Après une interminable attente, c’est donc sur le plateau du journal de TF1 que le champion du monde 98 a dévoilé les noms des heureux élus.

Comme on pouvait s’y attendre, l’équipe de France sera emmenée par son capitaine Hugo Lloris mais aussi par Paul Pogba, Raphaël Varane, N’Golo Kanté ou encore Blaise Matuidi, Antoine Griezmann, Samuel Umtiti et Olivier Giroud. Nation majeure du football notamment grâce à son championnat qui attire d’excellents joueurs, l’Angleterre affiche peu de réussite en Coupe du Monde ces dernières décennies. Dans sa liste de 23 joueurs, il ne faut pas se méprendre, il y a certes bien 3 latéraux droits de formation (Walker, Trippier et Alexander-Arnold), mais Walker a déjà été testé en tant que troisième central, axe droit. Avec ce 3-5-2, cela démultiplie les options offensives de Southgate, puisqu’avec Kane, Vardy, Rashford, Alli, Welbeck, Lingard et Sterling il dispose d’une belle variété de profils. Reste que l’Angleterre a peu marqué au cours des derniers matches et devra se montrer plus créative pour aller loin dans la compétition.

Le joueur clé : Harry Kane

Cela fait désormais 4 saisons qu’Harry Kane est le meilleur buteur anglais de Premier League. Forcément, il est considéré comme l’élément le plus dangereux de l’Angleterre, surtout s’il est épaulé par un Dele Alli, plus irrégulier mais à la complicité affirmée avec le buteur anglais. Auteur de 12 buts en 23 sélections, il affiche des statistiques déjà très intéressantes. Saura-t-il supporter le poids de tout un peuple sur ses épaules durant la compétition ? C’est la grande question.

Si lors des deux Coupes du monde précédentes (en Afrique du Sud et au Brésil), EA Sports avait décidé de commercialiser un opus estival consacré à la compétition, il n'en sera pas de même cette saison. L'éditeur nord-américain a uniquement opté en effet pour une mise à jour incluant les 32 nations qui seront présentes du 14 juin au 15 juillet prochain en Russie. Profitant de ses licences officielles, FIFA 18 proposera les 12 enceintes dans lesquelles auront lieu l'événement et, cerise sur le gâteau, une réplique réaliste du trophée sportif le plus prisé de la planète.
Prévue le 29 mai prochain sur consoles et PC, ladite mise à jour est bien évidemment gratuite, même si on aurait pu en douter par les temps qui courent. Elle est introduite en vidéo par la star portugaise du Real Madrid, Cristiano Ronaldo, égérie de l'épisode annuel. A noter également que l'avatar virtuel d'Antoine Griezmann est une nouvelle fois mis à l'honneur :

Sur FIFA 18, il sera possible de sélectionner les joueurs de son choix, en dépit des listes établies par les différents entraîneurs nationaux. Et notamment des Icônes, ces joueurs retraités qui ont marqué l'histoire du foot et qui sont présents sur la simulation (Maradona, Ronaldinho, Henry, Pelé...). La Coupe du monde en Russie arrive et EA ne pouvait pas ne pas en profiter. Le 29 mai, une grosse mise à jour aura lieu sur FIFA 18 pour te permettre de jouer ta propre Coupe du monde. La bonne nouvelle, c'est ce que ce mode sera entièrement gratuit. EA a d'ores et déjà publié les notes des joueurs belges, les voici.

Le 29 mai prochain, une grosse mise à jour aura lieu sur FIFA 18. À quelques mois du Mondial, EA Sports sort sa propre version de la Coupe du monde sur son jeu de foot. C'est assez remarquable car ce nouveau mode sera entièrement gratuit. Enfin, oui et non car comme pour Ultimate Team, les gens pourront toujours acheter des joueurs avec leur propre argent. Mais oui, le mode en lui-même est accessible à tous. En gros, si tu veux une meilleure équipe, tu vas devoir mettre la main au porte-feuille.

Les Italiens peuvent en profiter
Dans ce nouveau mode, les 32 équipes qualifiées pour le Mondial seront jouables. Il y aura également tous les stades russes et l'ambiance des matchs sera complètement différente par rapport aux matchs de FIFA 18 classiques.

Les joueurs auront le choix entre trois options: jouer la Coupe du monde comme elle est prévue par la FIFA, jouer à Ultimate Team avec les nouvelles cartes des joueurs en équipes nationales ET jouer leur propre tournoi. Ce sera donc l'occasion d'inclure les grands absents de cette édition 2018 comme l'Italie, les Pays-Bas et les États-Unis.

Pour chaque équipe, EA va revoir les notes de tous les joueurs. En fait, il semblerait que pour les nouvelles notes, EA se soit basé sur les performances des joueurs au sein de l'équipe nationale et non avec leur club. Les notes sont donc sensiblement différentes, surtout pour certains joueurs.

No great dramas or shocks to report this morning, thankfully. Here follows the relaxing gossip-based equivalent of a freshly drawn bubble bath, mug of herbal tea, a CD containing the atmospheric sounds of the pan pipes, and 14kg of valium.

Darren Moore’s Pardew-shaming two-win, two-draw stint at caretaker manager of West Bromwich Albion may not be enough to land him the job full time. The club are thinking about asking Brentford boss Dean Smith to take over, and they’ve got designs on Leicester assistant Michael Appleton as well.

Perhaps Claude Puel should throw his hat in the ring. He’s likely to be shown the door by Leicester, who take some impressing these days, just ask poor Claudio, so a strong finish to the season might not be enough to save him.

Tottenham are ready to bid £30m for the Southampton left-back Ryan Bertrand, according to the Star, who forecast a significant shake-up in Mauricio Pochettino’s defence. Danny Rose will leave, they predict, with Manchester United his most likely destination, and Toby Alderweireld, who has started just 11 league games this season because of injury and a subsequent failure to regain his place in the team, will probably go with him. With Olivier Giroud turning out to be handier than Antonio Conte realised at first, Álvaro Morata’s days at Chelsea could be numbered. Brought in as Diego Costa’s replacement, the Spaniard has spent most of his first season in English football looking a bit sad and forlorn. Where Costa snarled, Morata has allowed his bottom lip to wobble. When Costa took a knock from a defender, he got up and started a fight; Morata, by contrast, has tended to look pleadingly at unsympathetic referees. Not to worry, though, because Juventus are unmoved by his struggle to adapt to the Premier League’s uncompromising style. They want to bring the striker back to Italy this summer and will either take him on loan for two years or hand Chelsea £60m right now.

By the time Morata returns to Juventus, however, Max Allegri might already have left to replace Arsène Wenger at Arsenal, who have decided that Luis Enrique’s demands are too high. An Alabama school district finds itself in an ocean of hot water after the parents of a freshman football player who was allegedly hazed following an April practice filed a $12 million lawsuit against the Mobile Board of Education.

As reported by AL.com, Mary Rayford-Kim, the mother of 14-year-old Davidson (Ala.) football player Rodney Kim Jr. — who suffered a broken arm after a violent post-practice hazing attack — has filed a lawsuit accusing the Mobile County Board of Education of harboring negligence among its coaches, whom it claims failed to intervene when Kim Jr. was attacked by his classmates.

The school district moved quickly to suspend four players in the aftermath of the attack, though it simultaneously held back from passing public judgment as an internal investigation looked into the incident. Those four students have been charged as juveniles.

“It’s very definitely a disturbing situation that occurred in the locker room at Davidson High School,” Mobile County Schools Superintendent Martha Peek told AL.com after the incident was originally reported. “It’s something we by no means condone. We stress with our students proper decorum. Unfortunately, we had a group of young men that made some very poor decisions. Since that has come to light, we have begun immediately a complete investigation. As you can imagine, it’s complex. It will take a lot of interviewing and a lot of follow-up to get all the details and know who was involved and what took place.”

In addition to financial restitution, Kim Jr.’s family is seeking four other procedural changes as well, as laid out by AL.com:

For Davidson to forfeit all football games in the 2018 season.
For each of the school’s football coaches to be fired.
For all 20 football players involved in the beating to be charged.
For hazing to be banned in all high schools across the nation.

Naturally, only three of those four tenets are unilaterally enforceable by Davidson, with the fourth nominally already approved. Of the three which Davidson could enact, it seems highly unlikely that even two of the three are deemed acceptable, with the suspension of all 20 players who took part in the beating perhaps the most likely to be accomplished.

For now, the Davidson football program remains in an utter state of crisis, with the future of the sport at the school now very much contingent on the outcome of the trial it now faces.

Eight Temple football players and head coach Geoff Collins are heading to Japan to share their sport

Temple senior Michael Dogbe is excited about seeing a new culture and helping further educate others about football.

Dogbe, a defensive lineman, is among eight Owls players, in addition to coach Geoff Collins and several staff members, who will leave Friday for a nine-day trip to Japan, where they will help grow the game.

"I am excited to go there and to learn about their culture, as well," Dogbe said in a recent phone interview. "It is my first time outside of the U.S., and I want to see what else is out there."

The seniors joining Dogbe are quarterback Frank Nutile and offensive lineman Jaelin Robinson. The juniors are linebacker Shaun Bradley, cornerback Linwood Crump, and receiver Isaiah Wright. Sophomores on the trip will be defensive lineman Dan Archibong and center Matt Hennessey.

Collins originally was asked to travel to Japan and provide football coaching clinics on player safety, but the endeavor grew from there.

The eight players also will be earning three college credits for a summer course titled "Sport, Culture and Tourism in Japan," taught by Daniel Funk.

In addition to providing several football clinics, the class will take trips to three cities: Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto.

The itinerary includes visiting the U.S. Embassy and the University of Tokyo, and seeing a Tokyo Giants baseball game, a sumo wrestling tournament, several temples and shrines, and Dome Corporation headquarters. Dome Corporation is the exclusive licensee and distributor for Under Armour in Japan. In 2015, Temple signed a 10-year deal for $30 million with Under Armour to provide uniforms, apparel and footwear for the university's 19 varsity sports teams.

Temple has a school in Japan, appropriately named Temple University in Japan. The enrollment is approximately 1,100.

"They don't have a sports program at all," said Jeremy Jordan, Temple's associate dean of the school of sport, tourism and hospitality management and an NCAA faculty athletics representative who will accompany the Owls on the trip. "We are working with them and some research they are doing." Jordan said the trip came about because of his role as a member of the Sport Industry Research Center at Temple.

"We have been working on a project on how a new model college athletics can be changed in Japan," Jordan said. "They were very interested in the U.S. model, and through that time, the relationship has grown."

Jordan said the eight football players were chosen for the trip "based on exemplary academic performance, leadership and service to Temple and the larger community."

Collins views this as a great learning experience for all involved.

"I'm looking forward to experiencing a new culture and sharing our knowledge of football to those in Japan eager to learn," Collins said in a statement released by the school. "I know our players will have a great time and serve as tremendous ambassadors for Temple and our football program."

Temple is coming off a 7-6 season in Collins' first year, which ended with a 28-3 win over Florida International in the Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl. The Owls will open the 2018 season Sept. 1 at Lincoln Financial Field against Villanova.
