A short story was written and produced for One2one academy. Monica Kray is a team leader at Fusion Technology; today is the first time she meets her new team. Follow her story to understand more about the type of English used at work.

Chapter 1

The Office

It was 8:30 in the morning, coffee in hand I reluctantly moved forward in a coffee shop queue that somehow seemed to draw me into an abyss of the collective. The suspense of waiting to swipe my card held my attention long enough not to abandon the task and live to tell others about a soul-destroying experience that we all relate to in one way or another.

finally, it was my turn, in an attempt to own the moment, my card slipped into the machine with effortless grace and dared I say style if that was at all possible given the circumstances.

Never needing any assistance with all things technology, I was nothing short of embarrassed having inserted my card the wrong way round.

Following a juggling act to put my card back into my wallet with one hand, still holding my Latte with the other, the office was in sight. As I approached the large glass that separated work from the outside work, I paused to check that the correct button had been pressed before I made my way into the reception area of the building.
To my right, two cream sofas were positioned symmetrically under a large painting depicting a City landscape scene. It projected an image that screamed business complemented against an array of chrome planters and tropical plants.
Charlotte was almost too perfect,
smiling her eyes lead the way towards the lifts like a beam of light. It would be rude not to acknowledge, so I returned the smile before disappearing around the corner.

My very first time at this office and a new team to train were enough to put fear in any manager but I had prepared myself for such an occasion. The lift doors drew open, as I entered and pressed the floor number a hand emerged from nowhere and prized back the doors effortlessly.

Closely followed by a tall, clean-shaven man wearing a pinstripe suit, I realised that I would have to interact even if it was just a facial expression. The third floor please he said in a soft voice badly befitting the image that he was trying to portrait. The doors drew closed and no sooner as it moved, it came to a stop.

Something both he and I shared was that we both exited together albeit parting in different directions. Business etiquette forced us both into an uncomfortable bye with unnatural voice tones.

I had chosen the side of the corridor solely based on a chrome plated sign. My adventure was about to begin and I knew that the brown fire door marked Fusion Technology was all that stood in my way from this challenge.

The fire door was difficult to navigate, so I used both hands to pull on the handle. A large modern and open plan office took most of my attention span; I was expecting to find someone on the other side but no such luck.

From the corner of my eye, I could see someone behind smoked glass; I knew that I had to make a beeline towards them if I wanted to get this party started.

The silhouette took human form and I could now see more tables chairs and people immediately behind theirs. Hello, my name is Monica Kray and I’m from head office; those words sounded like something out of a movie in my head but the reality was very different, in fact quite the opposite.

At this point, I hoped that I was in the right office, had I made a mistake, it would have been the topic of laughter for some time. We have been expecting you, Tom Harding, from the projects department, pleased to meet you. Can I offer you a coffee or something to drink? No thank you I’m fine Tom, pleased to meet you too, is there somewhere I can leave my stuff?

He gestured to a desk behind his and as I draped my jacket around the chair and placed my bag on the desk, I realised that there was little time left before the meeting was scheduled to start. A silent alarm vibrates three times to warn me of any up and coming events without alerting anyone.

Phrasal Verbs

I’ve misplaced the file on the Grey Project could you ask around just in case I left it at the office.
We need to figure out why sales have dipped this quarter compared to last year.
Could you hold on for just a second and I will see if I can find him.
I will look at the file this evening.
We need to shop around to get the best prices.
Let’s sort it out tomorrow morning, it’s getting late and the meeting is coming to an end.
Please use up your holiday entitlement before December the 31st.
Could you note down tomorrow's schedule?
Can you all pencil in next Tuesday at 3pm for the training session.
Sarah, can you take over Geoff’s tasks while he is away.

As I scanned through the headlines this morning, sipping my coffee and barely paying attention to the TV and the usual noise that goes hand in hand with being a parent, a particular article caught my eye online.

Social and cultural diversity plays it's part on some level but can a particular part of a city be friendlier than another? It did make me think about the choices we make when choosing a place to live and perhaps raise a family.

Does the weather play it's part as the sun has very often been considered a major influence with the so-called; "feel good factor"? If we are talking about the UK then that simply can't be true. Tenses

Mix the past tense with a little bit of the present and a tiny bit of the future, welcome to this week's edition of Talk.

Modern interview formats demand a more modern approach. Today I will be helping you to identify with the past. Questions that ask you to prove that you have the necessary skill set to complete a particular task are challenging to answer so let me show you a good way to practice.

Typically CBI interview questions are broken down into parts, and these are:Motivation
Commitment to a position
Communication - Verbal/ Oral / Written
Decision-making abilities
Leadership Skills
Problem solving
Responsibility
Teamwork
Ethics

Let us take communication as an example question. The question may sound something like this;" Tell me a time where your communication skills proved crucial to an outcome?"Here you are going to have to refer to a particular example so here are a few tips on how to refer to the past.

- I can recall a particular time when I had to ......
- I faced this scenario when I .......
- If I had to give you an example, it would be when I had to ......
- When I was working as a ....................... I encountered this exact scenario.
- There was an occasion when I had to .....................
- When I used to work for ............... I had to ................ and this would be a good example.

There are many other ways that you can refer to the past; I have only listed a few. We can add an introduction to these forms such as:

Of course
Certainly
No problem
Yes
Sure

Imagine only choosing to answer all the questions with the same format; it would sound very strange. In my opinion, you should vary your format to hold the attention of the interviewer.

Your interviewer only has a limited amount of time to ask you questions, so depending on the question that you are asked to answer, four paragraphs could act as a guideline to prevent you from talking too much.

Spending too much time answering a question will only steal time from answering another. This will in turn only reduce your chances of success.

There is a methodology used to answer these types of questions, and this is referred to as S.T.A.R. This stands for; Situation, Task, Action and Result.

Since I have shown you how to relate to a situation, I will now turn my attention to; Task. A task is obligatory, and so it is an obligation since this task is not optional to complete. This being the case, we use specific sentence constructions to make reference to this requirement.

I had to
I needed to
I was required to
I was told to
My line manager asked me to
My client wanted me to

I would now like to; problem solve if I may, and I have shown a select few forms below. Remember your approach is a key selling point and is one of the main reasons that an employer would be interested in giving you the position versus your competitors.

I cannot provide you with actions since they vary considerably, but I can tell you that it is not wise to always refer to yourself and use the word; "I". A team, depending on the position that you are applying for can also be of value so to mix things up a little bit you could make reference to; "We, my team, they, my team, our department, my colleagues".

Finally, let us take a look at; "result", critical in every way. Since you are now adding value to your example, the result must be shown to be favourable, exciting and conclusive where possible. A few examples have been indicated below;

The outcome was very positive.
My team managed to beat the deadline.
The client was pleased.
My client was satisfied with the result.
Our team was successful.
The result was of significant benefit to our department.

At this point, two topics need to be mentioned, voice tone and speed of speech. If you are grammatically correct in every way but your voice tone does not show that you have the want, need or personality that could contribute to an organisation then your efforts will be wasted.

Equally, if you speak at the wrong pace, you may indicate that this quality is reflected in the way that you complete tasks or talk to clients on the phone. Nothing wrong with having a sense of urgency but there is a time and a place to apply, and it is clearly not in an interview.
