Postdoc position in Cognitive Neuroscience at Leiden University

Postdoc position in Cognitive Neuroscience at Leiden University - Research project "The role of noradrenergic arousal in reward-based learning and decision-making" In this postdoc project, we will examine the role of the noradrenergic brainstem arousal system in reward-based learning and decision-making.

Recent theoretical and empirical work on reward-based decision-making in volatile environments has suggested that behavioral variability does not only reflect random variability during the choice process (i.e., exploration) but also random variability during the updating (learning) of action values. The goal of the proposed project is to examine the degree to which these two (often adaptive) sources of variability in human decision-making are regulated by the activity of the noradrenergic system.

We will use a recently developed computational (reinforcement-learning) model to decompose human behavior into distinct learning and choice processes.. We will test how a pharmacological manipulation of the noradrenergic system alters random choice and learning variability, pupil-linked arousal, and neural (EEG/fMRI) activity in decision-making areas of the brain. We will also examine the link between inter-individual differences in locus coeruleus integrity (using structural MRI) and sources of behavioral variability.

The postdoc position in Cognitive Neuroscience at Leiden University project will be carried out in close collaboration with dr. Valentin Wyart and his lab in Paris (https://sites.google.com/site/valentinwyart/). In Leiden, the postdoc will be a member of a team of six researchers working on an NWO-Vici project. The research group will participate in the Leiden Institute for Brain and Cognition (LIBC), an interfaculty center for interdisciplinary research on brain and cognition (Leiden University ).

Key Responsibilities

· Literature study, development and execution of behavioral and neuroimaging studies;

· Report results at conferences and in international journals; · Supervise BSc and MSc thesis projects;

· Participate in the Leiden Institute for Brain and Cognition (LIBC). Selection Criteria · Ph.D. degree in cognitive psychology, cognitive neuroscience or closely related field; · Experience or affinity with neuroimaging techniques and computational modeling;

· Programming experience (e.g., Python, Matlab);

· Excellent research and writing skills;

Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) is seeking applicants for an NRC
(National Academies) the fellow who will participate in multimodal studies of
sleep and its impact on waking performance.

WRAIR is a major international center for sleep/circadian research, one of the premier military sleep facilities supported by the Department of Defense. Our Branch has active ongoing collaborations with intramural NIMH, NINDS, NIBIB, the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center/NICoE, Johns Hopkins University, Yale University, the University of Maryland and Washington State University.

Sleep research at WRAIR includes both preclinical and clinical studies, the latter ranging from basic in-laboratory studies to field trials which assess the real-world application of the basic findings.

The in-laboratory research in which the prospective fellow will participate uses multimodal (EEG, MEG, MRI, PET) methods to characterize features of normal and disordered human sleep and the relationships between these features and cognition, vigilance, motor control, insight, and creativity. We are particularly interested in the impact of interventions - e.g. pharmacological treatments and neurostimulation – on these relationships.

We are also inviting applications to three positions, two PhD students and a postdoctoral fellow, to our newly established international Laboratory of Social Neuroscience (LSN) at Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience, National Research University Higher School of Economics, Moscow (https://neuro.hse.ru/). Prof. Iiro P. Jääskeläinen is the Academic Supervisor, and Prof. Vasily Klucharev is the Director, of LSN.

This new multidisciplinary laboratory studies social cognition and decision-making using dynamic naturalistic stimuli during ultra-fast fMRI, multichannel EEG and MEG, TMS, and other neuroimaging technologies. Data analyses will be carried out with cutting edge computational methods, including inter-subject synchrony measures and machine-learning approaches. The stipends and the salaries of the PhD students and postdoctoral researcher are internationally competitive. PhD students are encouraged to get enrolled to the HSE doctoral school (Moscow). Both positions include international mobility and a possibility to internship at Aalto University, Finland. ICN staff will assist the PhD students and post-doctoral researcher in both science and administration. We anticipate high-quality empirical research and publication activities from our employees.

The Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) Program provides students with an opportunity to gain and develop research skills with the Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy for 10 weeks over the summer. For 20 years, this program has increased awareness of DOE research opportunities to students pursuing STEM degrees (science, technology, engineering and math).

The NINET lab seeks a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow to perform independent research in the area of depression and schizophrenia. The Postdoctoral Fellow will be responsible for the design and evaluation of experiments, development of new ideas that promote current research as well as performing quantitative data analysis in a multi-disciplinary team setting.

Candidates must have a passionate enthusiasm for research and a strong background in one of the following fields: computational neuroscience, cognitive neuroscience, mathematics/statistics/machine learning or related-fields. He/she should also possess the ability to take the initiative, work independently and be motivated to work in a highly collaborative research environment, and be able to demonstrate creativity, technical independence and excellent communication skills.

Strong interest in studying dynamic functional connectivity and its relationships with disease would be a plus. Proven skills in fMRI/EEG data analyses are both necessary. fNIRS skills would be a plus, but not necessary. Key attractions are access to TMS-fMRI system to conduct interleaved/concurrent TMS-fMRI, integrated EEG-fNIRS system and all the array of non-invasive neurostimulation techniques (ECT, MST, TMS, tDCS) a well as collaboration opportunities with an excellent network of domestic and international scientists and doctors.

The incumbent will be part of a vibrant community of researchers in non-invasive neurostimulation therapies and neurophysiology who share facilities, research ideas, student support, and methodological advances. Travel and accommodation expenses for attending the recruitment challenge will be covered by Wetsus.

In the selection process the suitability of the applicants is rated using a scoring system. In each round the evaluators will rate the candidate for five criteria and give scores for each criteria. The criteria and maximum scores are:

Initiative & independency (15 points
Communication (15 points)

Deadlines

Within one month after the application deadline, an application is reviewed and the applicant will be informed if his/her submission meets the requirements to be invited for the video interview (2nd round). The interview will take place as soon as possible but ultimately within one month after a positive evaluation in the first round. Within 2 weeks after a positive video interview the candidates will be invited for the recruitment challenge.

The Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) - 2016 Program provides students with an opportunity to gain and develop research skills with the Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy for 10 weeks over the summer. Post-Doctoral Position, Uni Oldenburg: analysis of speech coding in the human brain

The Department of Applied Neurocognitive Psychology at Oldenburg University, Germany, offers a Post-doctoral position (salary level E13 TVL, 3 years) with a focus on signal processing / statistical learning for analysis of speech coding in the human brain. The position is linked to the collaborative research center "The Active Auditory System" SFB-TR 31.

The research center aims to characterize and model mechanism of auditory object formation and scene analysis by combining psychophysical, neurophysiological, and quantitative modelling. It complements the Excellence Cluster "Hearing 4 All" which was recently awarded to the University of Oldenburg.

The combined effort of these centers will establish a strong link between neurophysiological models of auditory object representation and subjective perception. The post-doctoral position is situated in a project that applies statistical learning methods to human intracranial recordings (ECoG) and fMRI to derive and test quantitative statistical models of speech coding in the human brain.

The experiments are performed in a highly interdisciplinary lab environment and in close collaboration with the University of California Berkeley and Stanford University. The quantitative nature of the research project will require highly motivated candidates with strong quantitative and experimental skills.
Successful candidates will perform cutting edge research and should have a background in one or more of the following fields: signal processing, statistical learning, brain-machine-interfacing, non-invasive or invasive human neurophysiology of the auditory system. PhD position available at Signal Processing Group at the Department of Medical Physics and Acoustics, University of Oldenburg, Germany is seeking to fill the position of a PhD student in the PhD Program "Signals and Cognition". This full-time position is available for initially 3 years, with a monthly stipend amounting to min. 1500 € (net).

The title of the envisaged research project is "Multi-microphone speech enhancement using brain computer interfaces" (SigCog 05). In many speech communication applications, such as hearing aids and teleconferencing systems, the recorded signals consist of a mixture of different speakers and background noise.

Although in the last decades several multi-microphone speech enhancement techniques (e.g. fixed and adaptive beamforming, Multi-Channel Wiener Filter, blind source separation) have been developed, they all rely on pre-defined assumptions about the target speaker. E.g. in hearing aids the target speaker is typically assumed to be in front of the user, whereas in teleconferencing systems it is assumed to be the loudest speaker.

In this PhD project we will investigate brain computer interfaces to control multi-microphone speech enhancement techniques, in order to enhance the target speaker to which the user is attending.

This PhD project will consist of developing methods for decoding the neural signals to find out to which speaker the user is attending and integrating them with multi-microphone speech enhancement algorithms.

The Department of Medical Physics and Acoustics offers an attractive scientific environment in an international team of scientists and access to state-of-the-art acoustical equipment and labs. We are seeking for candidates with a Master (or equivalent) degree in electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, computer science or physics, who have excellent grades and a solid scientific background in signal processing, acoustics and/or pattern recognition. Doctoral Grant from The Unit of Biostatistics fosters collaboration with researchers in epidemiology, clinical research, and biological, social, and basic sciences. The research interests span a wide range that includes quantile inference, computational statistics, meta-analysis, survival data analysis, genetic statistics, longitudinal data analysis, causal inference, and asymptotic inference. The unit is actively involved in the development and application of statistical methods that may help improve each and every step and thus contribute toward solving health problems.

The unit also strives to disseminate knowledge and culture of biostatistics domestically and internationally. Post-graduate research supervision, teaching, and presentations to statistical and non-statistical audiences are an essential part of its mission.

Duties An ongoing project, BREATH (Beijing Respiratory Effects And Traffic-related Pollutants Study), investigates spatiotemporal relationship between multiple air pollutants and respiratory diseases in post-Olympics Beijing. The project is an international collaboration project comprising data from the Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and the Peking Union Medical College.

Applications are invited for a PhD student position in biostatistics to work in the development and application of statistical methods for spatiotemporal analysis and quantile inference. The results will be published in international scientific journals.

Entry requirements To meet the general entry requirements for third-cycle studies, an applicant must have
