Remember, Alpha Sigma Phi is made of men, what those men do directly affects the vitality of Alpha Sigma Phi. Look at these and test yourself everyday to see if you are killing Alpha Sigma Phi as a pledge and as a brother/sister:

1. Don’t attend meetings.
2. Be sure to leave before the meeting is over.
3. Next day, find fault with the officers and committees.
4. Be sure to sit in the back, so you can talk with a friend.
5. Get all that Alpha Sigma Phi can give, but give nothing in return.
6. Take no part in Alpha Sigma Phi’s affairs.
7. Never ask anyone to join Alpha Sigma Phi.
8. Talk cooperation, but never cooperate.
9. If asked to help on anything, always say you don’t have the time.
10. Never accept an office as it’s easier to criticize than to do things.
11. If appointed to a committee, never give any time or service to it.

Flight Phoenix has taken off, and is soaring for greater Heights!!!

The second part of Alpha Sigma Phi Dubai-UAE Alumni Association 165th Anniversary celebration was a roaring success!

It was a day before Christmas, December 24, 2010. Some good men and women of Alpha Sigma Phi Dubai-UAE alumni association were very excited for their first ever gift-giving activity at POLO-OWWA Dubai. The activity was arranged a week before the event and was duly approved by the Philippine Consulate General office in Dubai. Several preparations were done during the week; procurement of the grocery items, from the funds raised during the anniversary celebration last December 10 plus some donations.

The Heartwarming Experience

We arrived at the venue around 1 PM. It was very exciting as we waited in the reception. The allotted time given to the group was only 30 minutes, 1:30 PM – 2 PM, as several other groups were to follow afterwards. In there, we knew that we were about to give gifts to at least 239 distressed OFWs, all women, sheltered under one villa which is also the Philippine Overseas Labor Office – Overseas Workers Welfare Administration.

The program started a little bit late than scheduled due to some minor delays; but, the wait made the experience more thrilling and was really worth it. Bro Chad opened the program, sharing some background about Alpha Sigma Phi & how the members here in UAE formed the association. He also imparted some very good words of wisdom and encouragement to the recipients which painted smiles in their faces.

After Bro Chad’s sharing, Bro Fil followed with an opening prayer which really uplifted all of us.

As I observed them while they were sitting uncomfortably in the floor, I can see happy faces but most of them, you can feel that they are really missing and thinking of something somewhere else especially that it is Christmas day. We may be thinking of the same feelings, probably, missing our families and loved ones in the Philippines, but this time, we were lucky enough standing before them because we have jobs, we have the freedom and at least, we can buy the things that we desire, unlike them, facing some problems, full of doubts and uncertainties when it can be resolved, and just hoping to go back to their families and forget everything what they have experienced as an OFW.

After the prayer, Sis Jazz, who hosted the program with full enthusiasm, informed them that we were about to sing few Christmas songs like the traditional pinoy caroling, but this time, we will be the one to give gifts afterwards. They were very happy and it was really a joyous moment when everybody of us in the room sang the lines in harmony, again and again and again, wishing this happy moment would never end.

After the carol, we shared to them the little gifts that we prepared and they were very merry about it; you can really see it in their faces, and their eyes speak a lot. One recipient shared her feelings about the activity and the meaning of Christmas which really touched us while we were listening keenly. After her short speech, a representative of the POLO-OWWA admin also shared her thoughts about the gift-giving that we had, which also made us wear our best smiles as she emphasized that at least for 30 minutes of our lives, we had helped and shared our blessings to our fellow kababayans at the time when they needed us the most.

When I was about to do the closing remarks, an on the spot good news was relayed to me. That Alpha Sigma Phi UAE – Dubai Alumni Association, through the generous hearts of our brothers, sisters and families, especially Matinong family, which was in full support of the cause, announced that we are giving not one, not two, but five return tickets to the Philippines, which was received with full applause by the recipients and the POLO-OWWA staff. Personally, I was moved by it and felt some goose bumps all over as you can see in their faces that they were really very excited about it, and for sure, during this time; it would be the best Christmas present they needed the most. And since it was a surprise announcement, the admin had decided to do it in a raffle and will just advise the names of the 5 lucky kababayans who will receive the tickets. For the record, the admin staffs were very overwhelmed about it as it was the first time that a Greek-Letter organization had donated such a number of flight tickets in one occasion.

As I delivered the closing remarks, I felt like crying about the heartwarming experience we just had with them. During this part of the year, when Christmas tradition is very much practiced in our home country, when we should be gathered around one table with our families to share the Noche Buena, but the fact that we are OFWs, hundred miles away from them, it is quiet improbable. Nevertheless, we are still a family here; we can still make a family away from our families. And this we can be proud of as Filipinos, no matter what, in times of hunger, danger and wants, Filipinos are always there to at least lend a helping hand, and specifically this time, the Pinoy Alpha Sigs hand.

The program ended in a high note, full of smiles, laughter and lots of picture taking with them. Making sure that every moment was captured, to be treasured as part of the best memories we could ever have in our lives, with our fellow kababayans away from our families.

We left the hall with our heads up high, wearing our Greek letter shirts and caps with contagious smiles in our faces. As we exchange handshakes and goodbyes with them and the POLO-OWWA staff, we really felt that we were blessed and loved and had added some colors in each other’s lives. The activity we just had was priceless, very memorable and worth keeping for.

We took lots of group pictures outside the Villa as souvenirs. A short turnover ceremony and thank you speech was also made by Bro. Chad. We can see in each other’s expression that we are very proud of what we did, and indeed, we are!

Personally, I am humbled and wholeheartedly express my appreciation to the following for their presence, for sharing their precious time and efforts, and for the support extended to our first gift-giving activity:

The experience exemplified our motto, “Causa Latet Vis Est Notissima”, the Cause is hidden, but the results are well-known.

We did it right for the first time and I am hoping we will do it right and much bigger, all the time.

This is really a good kick-off for another promising year ahead of us!!!

Appeal for Support for the Undergraduate Delegates to the National Leadership Conference (NLC) 2011

Subject: APPEAL FOR SUPPORT for the Undergraduate delegates to the National Leadership Conference (NLC) on April 29, 30 to May 1, 2011 at Bacolod City

Purpose: Raise funds to subsidize the registration fee and transportation expenses of two (2) official delegates of all undergraduate chapters nationwide.

I am appealing to all Brothers and Sisters to extend financial support of any amount for the above purpose. Any amount you will extend could truly help make a change on the current situation and status of the undergraduate chapters. It is high time that we mobilize them - empower them for us to realize our motto – “TO BETTER THE MAN.”

It must be remembered that NLCs are designed as a training ground for the undergraduates to hone their leadership skills so they can effectively and efficiently run their respective chapters. But as always, the undergraduate chapters are constrained by financial problems so that they are not able to send delegates/participants to NLCs.

I had an agreement with Bro. Joel Jaranilla that if I could raise Php 50,000.00 then all the delegates will pay no registration fee. But I am trying to raise Php 100,000.00 so we could also subsidize the transportation expenses of the undergraduate delegates.

I am voluntarily doing this to ensure that all the undergraduate chapters will be well represented on the upcoming NLC without any financial worry.

Sa ngayon ay meron nang Php 20,000.00, Php 10,000.00 from Bro. Roger Wong at Php10,000.00 galing sakin na nasa pangangalaga ng ASCISI at ibibigay sa host chapter sa buwan ng Pebrero.

Alpha Sigma Phi (USA) Grand Chapter, Intercontinental Hotel, New Orleans, Louisiana, August 5-8, 2010

August 5, 2010, Opening Day

I arrived New Orleans from Akron, Ohio at about 1pm, August 5, 2010, boarded an airport shuttle and proceeded to Intercon-hotel at downtown New Orleans. I immediately checked in at the hotel reception and there I knew that Brother Kuni Jaranilla has already arrived, waiting in our room. We greeted each other and proceeded to the registration area at the 2nd floor of the hotel. There is a certain Brother Jeremiah of the National Headquarters greeted us and the moment we gave our names, he immediately confirmed it and gave us our IDs, t-shirts and kits. It was all prepared. We proceeded to the session hall to attend the General Session one on Social Excellence. We were quite late and I noticed that their speaker was Matt Geik. I met him in Cincinnati in 2001, Grand Valley chapter, same chapter with Brother Matt Mattson and we were at the same table during the grand ball in 2001.

When we entered the session hall, we were immediately greeted by a certain Brother, who gave us a warm welcome. We shook hands and later I knew that he is Brother Scott Woodfill. Same chapter with Brother Matt and a national headquarters volunteer. He is one Brother that Matt emailed me to find. After session one, General session 2 followed about business and social etiquette. Ms. Nonnie "mom" Owens is the speaker, a very nice lady. You can search her on Nonnie. com and OneIshy. com for reference. In between talks, I focused myself on my mission to talk to key persons of ASP-USA such as past Grand Senior Presidents, member of the Grand Council and other Brothers who are sympathetic to our cause as referred by Brother Matt Matson and Brother Richard Gibbs. Prior to the Grand Chapter, after I arrived in the US last July 8, 2010, I was in constant contact with Matt and Richard through cellphone and email, presenting and consulting them about my strategies and tactics on how to approach the issue and about and how to handle the key persons.

I asked Scott if there are past GSPs present, and lo! and behold,! he pointed me to the person standing near us, saying "that is GSP Rick Dexter. " I also later knew as one Brother referred to me by Brother Richard. I immediately greeted him and he was delighted that we were able to come to their Grand Chapter. I opened up to him our purpose of coming over and he shared his personal opinion regarding the issue. He said he was there when the HOA was deliberated and abrogated. He said he felt bad about that abrogation as he is one Brother who supports our HOA. He told me that he was the GSP in 1978-80, term before Brother Richard in 1980-1982. But he can’t do anything about it. He said as you know Brothers and sisters, ASP-USA is governed by the undergrads. If you noticed in the picture, only the undergrad chapters with one delegate allowed and one alternate, are allowed to vote on any policy, resolution on the floor that is taken up during the Grand Chapter.

So take note of that, if we need to pass something that needs a Grand Chapter approval, we must lobby first with the undergraduate chapter and must have a good relation with them so let us not annoy them by our random adding at Facebook and other sites nor annoying them by entering randomly in their websites as they are the one who decides on Grand Chapter.

Going back to Brother Rick, from the moment he heard about our purpose, he told me to try to talk to Brian, the legal counsel of ASP-USA and a member of the grand council. Then he went out of the session hall and immediately tried to find Brian. He went back to us inside and said happily, yes, Brian is willing to have a dialogue and talk with us tomorrow as he is busy that opening day. I was happy to hear that as I told myself, yes, this is now our chance to discuss the issue. After that we had our souvenir picture taken as I know it will be a good history, and I gave him my calling card for future reference in case he landed on Philippine soil.

After the general session 2, we took a break at 4. 00 pm as we prepared ourselves for the welcome reception at Tulane university. During the break, Brother Rick introduced me to Brother Drew Thawley who still remembers me in their NLC 2001. He is the CEO of the national headquarters at that time and now the CEO of the ASP-Educational Foundation. He also welcomed and greeted me warmly, telling me its nice that I came back for their Grand Chapter. During the break, I socialized with some Alpha Sigs alumni and I met Brother Chuck, a 55 yr old Brother who still would like to become a doctor in their small town.

At 5:30 pm, we boarded a bus with our white Grand Chapter t-shirts and proceeded to Tulane University. At the bus we were shown a DVD about the Grand Chapter and ASP-USA and given multi-colored beads which is tradition in New Orleans. We were all in 5 buses as there were 302 attendees. They said it was one of the most attended Grand Chapter. We arrive at Tulane University after 15 mins. and we proceeded to the campus for the large group picture. We had our welcome reception at the hall where a jazz brass band played for us and a New Orleans man painted himself with silver with a crocodile standing as a statue. I thought at first that it was a statue as he was not moving at all (see the pics). We had very good food, native to New Orleans - such as local vegetable salad, grilled shrimp and fish and jambalaya, fried rice with sausage or chicken on it.

There again I socialized with other delegates, I talked with Brian of University of California at Berkley, an undergrad member of the grand council. He greeted me first and we talked a little. I also chatted with Gordy, the CEO of ASP-USA, of Ohio Wesleyan, he is the professional manager of ASP-USA who sees to it that the goal, policy taken up and decided in the Grand Chapter is implemented. Brother Scott and I also chatted among many others, at dinner, some awards were given. One was the Larry Philippi award to honor the 100th anniversary of Cornell University and Brother Mike who resides in New Orleans gave a short talk and welcomed us to New Orleans. I chatted with Brother Mike after his talk and I learned that he is a retired navy and have been assigned at Subic naval base. I also met their outgoing GSP Brother Rich Ritter, I introduced myself and we greeted each other as he welcomed us in their Grand Chapter. Remember? Brother Matt sent him an email regarding our issue and my forthcoming visit and he responded positively in that letter. I happened to chance upon Rob Sheenan, so I also approached him and greeted him. I told him that Brother Ric Martinez sends his regards to him as I know they are both close to each other. Rob is instrumental in the drafting of our ritual combining our virtues and ideals with ASP-USA. During that welcome dinner I also came to know Brother Neale of Toledo chapter whom you know by now, became very close to me. David, an undergraduate of North Carolina and Mark, alumni and chapter advisor of Ohio State, the chapter that I visited (see the pics).

After the welcome dinner, at about 9. 00pm the black lantern processional was conducted. It was a tradition that dates back to 1845. It is a ritual remembering our Brothers who had gone to the Omega. It is a very solemn and spiritual ceremony. There I reflected that to be a member of Alpha Sigma Phi is not only for life but goes even beyond death, because in the black lantern procession, after the Omega symbol is formed, each latest Brother who had gone to Omega is remembered as their names are mentioned and imploring them to continue to guide the Old Gal. After the Omega formation, the Brothers exits silently in unison, single file lead by the Marshall and leaves the lighted lamp forming the omega. It was a moving experience for me that I had goosebumps as I felt the spirits of Alpha Sigs who had gone before us hover around us as I am taking some pictures. The lighted lamp is left there for about 15minutes more or less after which it will be secured by the Brothers.

After the black lantern processional. After many of the Alpha Sigs had left the campus, I noticed Brian, the legal counsel, was talking to a Brother alone, I immediately approach him and greeted him. He warmly welcomed me and Brod Kuni. I reminded him about what Brother Rick had said to me and confirm our appointment meeting the following night at dinner. He is a mild mannered gentleman and warm that I felt I can easily get along with. We chatted a little and bid farewell to each as our bus was already waiting with the promise to continue the dialogue. From then on I saw the light at the end of the tunnel.

We arrived at the hotel at 10pm. Me and Bro Kuni decided to rest, but while in the middle of the night Brod Kuni woke up as I can’t also fall asleep. We decided to stroll on Bourbon street of New Orleans, the famous night strip of the great EZ. It is more or less 3km long (see the pics). I bought light miller beer in a cup for $3 while we went bar hopping as there were many bars with entertainers and bands singing jazz, music of the 80s, etc. with no entrance fees. We enjoyed our first night out and went back to our hotel at 1am to sleep.

August 6, 2010, Second Day.

I woke up at 7. 00am and prepared for the opening ceremonies. The opening ceremony started at 9. 00am with the processional march of all the grand council members in their elegant robes of different colors (GSP-purple,GM- white,JSP-red legal counsel-black and other grand council- blue) depending on your position. All the official delegates were seated in their chapter designation and beside them were their alternate delegates. They were all seated at the center of the hall. Other attendees like alumni and guest were seated on the two sides. It was a 1-hour program. Very brief, the GSP call the Grand Chapter to order and made a brief report. He took note that in 2009 alone they had 1,100 new pledges that became Brothers. Now, there are 76 chapters and 12 are colonies.

He also stressed the importance of the ASP educational foundation. He recognized the directors of the foundation and thanked them on their generosity for the Grand Chapter. The foundation subsidized the hotel and registration of each chapter official delegate. Gordy, the CEO also made a brief report emphasizing on the quality of their recruits this year (students leaders and scholars). Returning alumni volunteers who served as faculty advisors or chapter consultants and the creation of CLVEN properties, a housing corporation. After the ceremony, during the break, I had some picture taking sessions with the undergrads of Toledo chapter.

At 10:30-11:30, we attended the alumni track session 1, the topic is advising ritual education and Brother Drew Cas of Presbyterian chapter was the speaker. Bro Kuni participated in the discussion and ask some question. The focus of the talk is focusing on fundamentals of the ritual which is the basic purpose, values and ideals of the fraternity. Ritual - to better the entire organization and individual. After the talk I had some chat with Drew and introduced myself as coming from ASP-Philippines (see the pic). Five virtues in the ritual – Patriotism (do the right thing, be fair to everybody, respect the choice of individual), Keeping the values of honor, respect & dignity. People lost sight of the real values, purpose of the ritual. Live the ritual, teaching the ritual and the values in it. Talk about it. Ritual serve as a guide, take note of the 5 virtues of silence, charity, purity, honor &patriotism, learn it, live it and teach it. The ritual composes the core values of the fraternity, the very foundation of the fraternity.

We proceeded to a separate hall to have lunch sponsored by the foundation again. They termed it as alumni engagement lunch. During lunch I seated at the vacant chair where Steve Sizzo, foundation director, Rob Sheenan ex-CEO of ASP-USA and Brian Thomas, UC Berkley, undergrad member of the grand council. We had a good discussion about how we are in ASP-Philippines. Drew Thawley is the luncheon speaker and talked about volunteer giving in the foundation, how it helped the undergrad and other fraternity activity.

The undergrad ate at a separate hall for their etiquette lunch again sponsored by the foundation. We again tasted the good seafoods of New Orleans. In the afternoon we attended the alumni track session 2. Topic was what everyone should know about saving and investing. It was a panel discussion and Brother Greg Kroen, Illinois 91 was the moderator. The panel was composed of 3 Brothers who worked in different well known investment houses. Jake Gamble-Morgan investment, Xmas Buck, Steve Packer-investment consultant. They manage up to $13 trillion of investment. Mutual funds were discussed and saving at least 6 month to 1month of extra income in case something happens to you. We took a break at 5:00pm and prepared for Alumni Recognition Reception. Reception was exclusive for alumni at the royal house restaurant. During the dinner the outgoing members of the grand council and ASP- educational foundation were honored and given recognition plaques.

At the recognition dinner, I met and reconnected with many friends whom I have met in the NLC at Cincinnati. Matt Geik of GVSU, still remembers me and we had a chat. Tom Hinkley, ex-CEO was also honored and I talked to him also. Mike, an alumni from New Orleans and Allan, faculty advisor of Alabama set with us. We exchanged pleasantries and stories. I also had fellowship with younger alumni of NJIT and Rutgers (see the pics).

I have to share to you a story which I did not expect. During the reception dinner. One Brother called my name Brother Joel, you are here. At first I did not recognize him as it was 10 years ago. I even asked one of his chapter mates who that Brother was and he said his name was Sam. That instant, I remember him, Brother Sam is my society classmate in NLC 2001. We were together at the community service and in the group discussions and workshops. During dinner in our table, he approached me and sat at my side. Then he said "Brother Joel, remember you gave me an ASP patch ten years ago? It’s still with me, I still kept it Brother Joel. I can’t forget you Brother because in my entire life as an Alpha Sig, you are the only one who gave and handed me a souvenir. " I was touched by his revelation and I reflected, for us here in the Philippines, giving of little souvenir is normal to us but to some Brothers who have not received anything before, it means a lot to them. We reminisced about many of our activities and companionship and thanking and greeting each other. It was a great feeling to see a Brother that you have not seen for a long time.

As the night was winding down, I notice that Brian arrived and was about to get food at the buffet table, I immediately approach and greeted him. He sat at our table with Brod Kuni and we continued with our dialogue. Other topics were discussed such as idea of forging stronger ties even without the written agreement. He himself was eager to continue with the relationship.

We had a cordial dialogue and meeting. Many matters had been clarified as he explained fully to us the intention of the abrogation. He said there was no any intention of ASP-USA to dissociate itself from ASP-Philippines nor take back the symbols. It was solely for legal liabilities and risk issues as ASP-USA is trying to protect its interest as they have millions of dollars in assets in case a case will be filed against them for any acts that ASP-Philippines might do and be sued. It was their opinion that because of that agreement, they will be tied up to us and eventually be a party in our case. And they know that they have no control over us and our acts. He further even said that if their letter to us was interpreted that way, it was a miscommunication as that was not the intention and he even apologized for it.

On our part we explained to him that it is good that the matter was clarified as some Brothers interpreted it that way. We also explained how we value their symbols and insignias, values and virtues. We even protect it with our life. I told him stories how many times we discover certain groups who use our name and pretending to be us and we immediately make a move to stop them from using our good name and I noticed that he just keep on nodding every time I make a point. Brod Kuni also added that we as a fraternity is registered with the SEC and have a legal personality and can also be held liable for any wrongful acts by any of our members. So we are careful of all our acts as a fraternity too. I further explained that we already adopted their policy of non hazing way back in 1984 when Brother Richard visited us in the Philippines, way ahead of the anti hazing law of the Philippines. He looked surprised. But I further told him that just like them in the US, we also have problems in the implementation to some chapters as some would prefer the traditional way or a combination of both. But I pointed out to him that as a national organization, we are vigorously pursuing the non hazing policy in accepting new members. He was surprised that we have adopted the policy since 1984. He thought that we opted to adopt it because of the abrogation of the HOA.

I discussed to him the idea that we could continue the communication by sending and updating them of the good deeds we are doing in our schools and communities and will send them our annual or biennial report on the update of our fraternity. He certainly approved and liked the idea. I discussed also with Brian, the concept of exchange visits, like they will continue to invite us in their Grand Chapters or National Leadership Conferences and we would also invite them to ours. I further said to him that what they will shoulder is just their airfares. The moment they step on Philippines soil, we will shoulder all their board and lodging. He again approved the idea and even went on to suggest that we write the Grand Council of our invitation to our NLC in Bacolod on April 2011 and he will see what he can do about it.

We also discussed the issue of our fraternity as being coed, meaning accepting sorority or women members. I explained to him the uniqueness of our fraternity and the reason why accept women members and he didn’t mind it and he respects us for it. I know that there are some fraternities in the US now that are accepting women members.

I also told him how the ASP-USA virtues and ideals, symbols and insignias have an impact in our lives as an Alphans. I told him stories about how big and grand we celebrate their December 6, 1845 founding and stories how their symbols and insignias save many lives and properties. He just smiled and nod in amazement.

I also clarified with Brian if we can wear our barong tagalog with their coat of arms in it. He said by all means.

We decided to continue the meeting and dialogue the following day with the presence of the new GSP as we now prepared to go back to our hotel to rest. While I was walking back to our hotel I was in high spirits with the results of our 2nd dialogue with Brian. I knew we had achieved the main purpose in attending the Grand Chapter and many issues were clarified.

In summary we have tackled and cleared up the following;

1. Idea of continuing our relationship between ASP-USA and ASP-Phils even without a written agreement.

2. Anti hazing policy of ASP-PHILS.

3. There could be some groups claiming to be us and using our name but actually does not belong to us.

4. The sacredness of their symbol and name to us.

5. ASP-Phils being a SEC registered and have juridical personality.

6. Impact of their symbol to us.

7. Celebration of December 6, 1845

Me and Brod Kuni again celebrated our breakthrough in the dialogue by strolling on Bourbon Street. We went back to our hotel at 12:00 midnite and slept.

August 7,2010 (3rd day)

It was a light morning for me and Brod Kuni. This time I was wearing my short sleeve polo barong with the ASP coat of arms. I just roamed around the hotel, greeting fellow Alpha Sigs as I was familiar with them already. Taking pictures and group pictures with some undergrads and took a peep at the merchandise sold by the national headquarters and other authorized Greek stores.

We had our lunch at Bubba Gump Shrimp restaurant at downtown New Orleans. I was seated with Ed Lenane, with two other Brothers and he was one Brother whom Brother Matt emailed to also take care of me, we met in NLC 2001. In the afternoon we attended the Alumni track three, topic is managing risk and liability, the speaker was Brother Dave West. After which, alumni track four followed at 3:00 to 4:00 pm. The topic was HOW more important than WHAT? Given by Mark Still, past GSP. At 4:00pm, alumni track five, the last, on networking to get a job was given by Jeff Hill. While the alumni were having their Track session the undergrads also had their own workshops on the ff: Recruitment-the fraternity new philosophy, new member education, ritual education, national Philanthropy-Livestrong, member and personal accountability. At 5. 00pm, we prepared for the cocktail and gala night.

This time we now wore our long sleeved barong tagalogs with the ASP-coat of arms. We proceeded to the hotel lobby for the cocktail and grand council reception. I again met and chatted and took pictures with many Alpha Sigs both alumni and undergrads at the same time distributing my calling card. This time we looked unique and have been identified as from ASP-Philippines because of our barong tagalog. It was during this occasion that I met Brother Matt Mattson, he just arrive from another fraternity convention where he was also invited to talk. We greeted and hugged each other and exchanged pleasantries and asked how ASP-Philippines was. We tried to find the newly re-elected GSP, Brother Rich. After finding him, we wasted no time in talking to him. Matt, Bro Kuni and I had a dialogue with Rich and presented to him all our idea of exchange visits, continued communication and strengthening the bond of friendship between our two fraternities. He approved all our ideas and welcomed it. The gala night was about to start and we ended our meeting full of hope. It was also during this cocktail that I happened to chanc upon past GSP John Gibson, 2000-2002. We greeted each other and remembered me very much. We had a good chat and extend his regards to all Alphans in the Philippines. The gala night started with a processional march of all newly elected grand council. Before dinner was served all ladies present where requested to stand and all Brothers present were requested to kneel down as they sang Alphan’s sweetheart song after which steak was served. After dinner, major awards were given to outstanding chapters. I and Brod Kuni went back to our room to rest after the gala night. While resting, I was smiling and savoring the achievements that we have accomplished in the Grand Chapter and the sweet memories that I will never forget. The very good news that I will be bringing to my Brothers and sisters in ASP-Philippines.

August 8th (farewell day)

Early morning, Brod Kuni was preparing to fly back to San Diego and I accompanied him down to the lobby where we called a taxi to bring him to the airport. At 9:00am Brother Matt called my room and invited me to a brunch meeting at 10:00am. Since I was already dressed up, I decided to go down to the lobby first and met and chatted with some Alpha Sigs who are also savoring their stay at the Grand Chapter. At 10:00am, Matt met me at the lobby and we invited Neale along the way. We had a good buffet breakfast at a nearby hotel. First we reminisced all the good times he experienced in the Philippines - how he was treated like a king, the newly grilled bangus he tried to eat with his hands at the farewell day of the NLC in Butuan at the beach. The night out in Manila where every lady lead singer of the band is mentioning his name. We also discussed our plans of creating a small group in Facebook compose of some members of ASP-Phil and ASP-USA to foster the relationship between our two fraternities. To try to come with $15,000 a year to bring at least 10 alpha sig Brothers to the Philippines on an International Community Service Mission, Brother Matt further said, that he can even tap the help of other NGO's to fund the project and all we had to provide is the manpower. He also said how great it would be if we could make it materialize and what a public relation mileage for both ASP-Philippines and ASP-USA doing international community service at a community in the Philippines. Brother Matt has other forward thinking and bold ideas that he plans to implement in the near future between ASP-Philippines and ASP-USA. Let us start with a single step and continue the communication I further said. This time I took my badge and presented to him as a souvenir. He also give me his DVD and book on the 8 steps on to limitless possibility for fraternity recruitment. We had picture taking of our exchange of souvenir. We had a very fruitful brunch meeting. In paying the bill I tried to chip in and he said no, the bill is on him saying, it is the least he could do to a visiting Brother from ASP-Philippines. While going back to the hotel he said to me to go up with with him at his room because he will also give his badge to me as he was very delighted by the badge that I gave him. We bid farewells with each other at the lobby as he was about fly to another speaking engagement. It was also during this time that I chance upon Brother Scott to whom I gave my black ASP-tshirt as souvenir and my token of thanks for all the hospitality he accorded me. He said how he wished he could have done much more.

It was already check out time at the Intercon and I have to transfer to a more cheaper hotel for my 3-day extension in New Orleans. I checked in on my new hotel at Tulane ave. and took a rest the whole afternoon. I uploaded all the pictures I have taken at the Grand Chapter in on Facebook.

August 9 and 10 (Post Grand Chapter activities)

I extended my stay for 2 days in New Orleans, I was lucky that Brother Neale also extended his stay and we spent 2 days of friendship, Brotherhood, enjoying each others company going to the museum, Jackson square, French market, strolling Bourbon st. , eating lunch together and meeting some alumni and undergrad who also extended their stay. We exchanged souvenirs, I gave him my Alphans shirt and barong and he also gave me his ASP shirt and ASP seniors pin. We had our farewell lunch at Palace Café. I told him a lot of Alphans stories. He learned our Alphans clap, handshake and 3 finger sign. He is looking forward in visiting the Philippines in the near future.

Brothers and sisters, my trip to the Grand Chapter is not the end of our journey. There is a lot to be done as far as Alpha Sigma Philippines is concerned.

The lessons I have learned in their Grand Chapter and recommendations are the following;

1. We need to run our national organization professionally.

2. Let us do our part in doing our share by paying our annual dues and other obligation.

3. We need to put up our Foundation as soon as possible

4. We must be serious with our Anti-hazing policy and pursue it vigorously

5. Go back to the fundamentals, let the ritual be learned, read, studied, talked and taught to all chapters and alumni associations. Go back to the very purpose, virtues and ideals of Alpha…Sigma…and Phi.

6. Let the Pledge Education Program be implemented 100% at the chapter level. Implement the 8 steps to limitless possibility for fraternity recruitment It can be purchased by ebook @www. PhireUp. com for only $12. 00.

7. Update ASP-USA with our biennial report, publications, community service projects and send official invitation during our NLC and Convention.

8. All Chapters and Alumni Association should be careful in what they are posting at Facebook, Youtube and other internet sites. Publications must always be for a good public image and good public relations and not the other way around.
