Sunday, April 22, is Earth Day. "Go Green" by recycling, planting a tree, riding your bike and learning more about living green.

The Village of Glenview website offers information about many environmental initiatives. So does the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County (SWANCC).

In honor of Earth Day, learn about the vital role pollinators play in the ecosystem this Saturday, April 21, from 2:00 to 3:30 PM at the Glenview Public Library, 1930 Glenview Road. Speakers for "Citizen Science: Pollinators" include Wyatt Cummings, student member of the Village of Glenview Natural Resources Commission; Robin Forde, Wagner Farm's lead beekeeper; and Abigail Derby Lewis, Senior Conservation Ecologist for the Field Museum.

Clocks are springing forward one hour this weekend, a reminder to change and test the batteries in your smoke alarm.

Illinois law requires every household to have smoke alarms within 15 feet of every bedroom and at least one alarm on each floor of the home.

The National Fire Protection Association provides the following tips for installation and maintenance of smoke alarms:

• Install alarms close to each sleeping area of the house and on every level of the house. Ensure that the alarms are interconnected so when one sounds, they all do.

• Change alarm batteries at least twice a year. Daylight Savings Time is a reminder to “Change your Clock, Change your Batteries.”

• Test alarms at least once a month.

• Replace all smoke alarms when they are ten years old.

• Closed doors may slow the spread of smoke.

• Smoke alarms should be a part of a larger home escape plan for emergencies. Visit the NFPA website for more information on home escape planning.

Early Voting Begins Monday

The March 20 Gubernatorial Primary Election has a number of party choices on the ballot for state, county and judicial races, as well as a referendum question from the Glenview Park District. Early voting begins Monday, March 5.

Glenview Village Hall, 2500 East Lake Avenue, is serving as an early voting polling place. Early voting will take place:

9 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 5-10; March 17, March 19

10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays, March 11 and 18

9 a.m. to 7 p.m. March 12-16

Cook County residents can also register to vote at early voting polling places during the grace period.

Glenview residents -- new and established -- can learn more about local governments and community organizations in the Village at the Glenview Resident Open House from 9:00 to 11:30 AM, Saturday, February 17, at the Park Center, 2400 Chestnut Avenue.

Representatives of the Village of Glenview (including police, fire, dispatch and senior services), Glenview Park District, Glenview Public Library, Glenview Chamber of Commerce, Northfield Township, and NorthShore University HealthSystem Medical Group-Glenbrook Medical West will be available.
