Edition 1 - The Travel Issue

For the very first time Omega, makers of the watch that went to the moon and stole the heart of James Bond, is launching a global lifestyle magazine.

Issues will follow every March and September, with an initial print-run of 100,000 copies. The magazine is available to Omega customers worldwide through the company's unique global network of flagship stores and boutiques, all located in the best shopping streets of the most important cities in the world from Beverly Hills to Bangkok and Bond Street to Bahnofstrasse.

"Lifetime" makes an attractive gift for men and women of 30 years of age and up who share a taste for quality and a strong interest in fashion and urban living. Each issue will focus on a particular theme strongly related to the emotions and interests of our clients and readers. Top journalists and photographers will contribute articles on lifestyle, luxury, sport, design and art, as well as fashion and urban living.

September's first issue is "The Travel Issue", with more than half of the 124 pages devoted to the world of travelling. In each issue 20 per cent of pages will focus on Omega itself, giving a far clearer insight into the watches and jewellery of the famous Swiss brand than any other magazine can provide. A further 20 per cent of pages will be about the world of Omega and its partnerships in golf, sailing, the Olympics, space exploration, the Solar Impulse project, James Bond and the other Omega Brand Ambassadors. Regular features will include a major fashion shoot, timezone and essentials for him and her.

Edition 2 - The Olympic Games Edition

The opulent “Olympic Games Edition” of OMEGA Lifetime magazine is dedicated to the 2008 Olympic Games and to the country which is hosting them.

China has been undergoing a radical transformation in recent years and OMEGA Lifetime offers readers intimate views of the new China: there’s an article about the MAD, the country’s world-beating architectural studio and their work. Fashion coverage includes features about designer Jenni Ji and Chinese supermodel Du Juan. There are also profiles of controversial performance artist Zhang Huan and culinary superstar JinR.

On the 8th of August, 2008, the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games will take place at 8:08 p.m. The man behind the ceremony is audacious Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou whose compelling professional odyssey is detailed here. The “James Bond Edition” of OMEGA Lifetime magazine is dedicated to the world’s favourite secret agent and to QUANTUM OF SOLACE, the 22nd instalment in the most successful film franchise of all time.

The James Bond Edition of Lifetime includes an editorial from the producers of the Bond movies detailing OMEGA’s long partnership with the film series as well as feature articles about 007’s vehicles and gadgets,

his choice of beverages and, of course, his watches.

A behind-the-scenes look at QUANTUM OF SOLACE takes readers on location with profound insights into the most lavish (and expensive) James Bond film ever as Daniel Craig reprises the role he assumed in Casino Royale.

There is also a literary portrait of Ian Fleming, the “gentleman writer” who created James Bond as well as a profile of Lawrence of Arabia – “the thinking man’s spy” who was a legendary OMEGA wearer.

Edition 4 - The Moon Edition

The “Moon Edition” of OMEGA Lifetime magazine commemorates the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission. It was on the 21st of July, 1969 that Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first human beings to step onto the lunar Surface.

This high-flying issue of Lifetime opens with an editorial from astronaut and OMEGA ambassador Eugene Cernan, the last man to walk on the Moon.

One of the lead articles includes a comprehensive history of the space program featuring anecdotes about the larger-than-life characters whose names became synonymous with manned space flight. It recounts in detail the seven lunar missions, including the much-storied Apollo 13. It didn’t fulfil its central aim of landing on the Moon but was returned safely to Earth as a result of human ingenuity and the OMEGA Speedmaster Professional chronograph.

For the world’s many Speedmaster fans, there are two articles about the watch which has been part of every manned spaceflight since the early 1960s. One is a history of the specific timepieces worn by the astronauts on their assorted missions; the other is about the brand new OMEGA Speedmaster Apollo 11 “40th Anniversary” Limited Edition watches.

It’s been a significant year for OMEGA’s new product releases including the Constellation Griffes Fine Jewellery Collection, the Seamaster Aqua Terra Annual Calendar Watch, and the Seamaster Aqua Terra “White Jewellery” watch and they all have their own articles in the new edition of Lifetime.

The most talked-about watch at this year’s BaselWorld trade fair was the Seamaster PloProf 1200M Co-Axial chronometer and an article by PloProf specialist Jon Wallis compares the legendary original with its updated, state-of-the-industry successor.

Omega Speedmaster "Legend" it's Great watch

This is a great watch and I'm quite pleased with Amazon's price, shipping and packaging. I'm not going to review the watch here - there are plenty of good reviews online. I'll focus instead on Amazon.

Amazon had the lowest price online. The watch I received was brand new in box - in an Omega red leather box, inside an Omega white cardboard box with manual, and well packaged in a larger box. No Omega warranty card or certificates - as expected. Watch and bracelet had all the plastic protective films in place. Watch has serial number on it.

I let the watch run for a day, checked accuracy (fine), then removed films. Sized the bracelet myself - again, there are several good sites that show you how. If you decide to do it yourself - (1) make sure you have the right tool(s) with longish pins, (2) make sure you've done it before on other watches, (3) follow instructions; push the pins out in the direction marked by arrows on the links, put them back in the opposite direction. If you have an doubts at all about sizing it yourself - don't, go to a jeweler!

Incredible watch and relatively great value,

The Omega Speedmaster is one of the most recognizable watches ever. Let alone the amazing history the company has in precision watchmaking.

The watch is amazing. It's actually the perfect size for any wrist, even though I wish it were a few millimeters larger. The accuracy is spot on. Easily <+/-4 seconds daily. Given that it's actually a ETA2892, that's not surprising.

While it is some what of an expensive watch, the value (especially on Amazon) is hard to beat. Omega is a high-end luxury watch, but this is priced more at the level of Oris. Which is another favorite watch manufacturer of mine.

The bracelet is solid and very comfortable on the wrist. It lays flat, as it should. it's also silent!

I have many quartz chronographs which are likely more accurate. However, there's something about a mechanical chronograph that is so appealing. I love how the second hand immediately jumps back to the 12 marker when resetting. And the sub-dial second hand ticks so smoothly away.

I usually write pros/cons, but this watch is perfect in nearly every way. It would be a very nice addition to your collection or if it's the only watch you'll ever own. Highly recommended!!

"This is a beautiful watch with a legendary history and phenomenal following. It has been one of the most popular watches ever made by Omega since its debut in 1957. The current Speedmaster Professionals come in multiple versions, but are for the most part little changed in its over 50 year life.

Why is it amazing?

During the 1960's space race with the Soviets, NASA did not have the time to announce an open competition from all interested watch companies to design a watch suitable for space travel. This would have required bids from different manufacturers with the eventual award of a government contract. NASA engineers in plain clothes went to downtown Houston and entered various high end stores and purchased high-end (i.e. expensive) manual wind wristwatches from 10 different brands, such as Omega, Rolex, etc. This was all done in secrecy and none of the watch manufacturers, such as Omega, were aware of this. NASA subjected the watches to grueling tests of temperature extremes, shocks, humidity, extreme pressure changes, etc. All of the watches malfunctioned and could not finish all of the tests except for one, the Omega Speedmaster.

NASA began to equip their astronauts in 1962 for the Gemini missions with a Speedmaster attached by a strap to the OUTSIDE of the astronauts' suits. Omega executives saw NASA's photos of the astronauts and realized that they were using their watches. This was quickly confirmed with a phone call to NASA. NASA then quickly announced that the Omega Speedmaster was the official watch to be used on their space missions. Realize that this was all done without Omega's awareness.
.
Bulova, an American watchmaker, pressured congressmen who pressured NASA to allow for an open competition to include Bulova. NASA then allowed watchmakers to submit watches for evaluation. Once again, the Omega Speedmaster Professional was the only watch that passed all of NASA's tests! Believe it or not, through constant pressure from Bulova, NASA again had to hold an open competition a third time in 1978, and AGAIN, the Omega Speedmaster was found to be the only acceptable watch. This is the stuff of legends!

What attributes do all of the current versions of the Speedmaster Pro (3570.50, 3573.50, 3576.50, etc) have?

1. Beautiful clear dial with luminous markers
2. Chronograph (timer)
3. 42.5 mm case size (good IMHO for wrists 6" and above)
4. Classic unchanged looks from the original 1957 design
5. Wonderful manual wind mechanism with proven history of reliability
6. Water resistance of 50m or 167 feet (this is acceptable for "normal" use, but is certainly not intended to be a diver's watch)

What is specific to a 3573.50 a.k.a. "sapphire sandwich"?

1. Cal 1863 movement (all of past and current movements are terrific and one should not be thought of as superior to another)
2. Sapphire crystal is used over the dial instead of the hesalite crystal (i.e. plexiglass) used on the standard 3570.50 model. Sapphire crystal is much more scratch resistant but can shatter with high impact. The traditional, standard 3570.50 model's hesalite is nearly impossible to shatter and its scratches can easily be buffed out. The original hesalite is also more authentic to the original moon watch design as the sapphire crystal models were never approved by NASA.
3. Sapphire crystal caseback to show the beautiful movement. The traditional 3570.50 model has a stainless steel back.

What are the downsides of this 3573.50 "sapphire sandwich" compared to the standard 3570.50 model shown?

1. Cost - the 3573.50 is significantly more expensive than the 3570.5
2. Sapphire crystal can shatter
3. Sapphire cyrstal is less "authentic" when thinking about its NASA history
4. Sapphire crystal caseback is also less authentic than the original moonwatch

I ended up purchasing the 3573.50, but I strongly considered the more classic, 3570.50 with the hesalite crystal plexiglass and the steel caseback. I did not like the idea of having to buff and polish out scratches on the plexiglass. It is supposed to be very easy to do, but I just preferred sapphire crystal.

Even though it is less true to the original 1957 design, I liked the idea of sapphire crystal caseback to observe the beautiful Omega movement.

If you either don't want to spend the extra money for these differences, or if you prefer to have a truer, more authentic moonwatch, then get the 3570.50. People love that watch. Either way, you will most likely be pleased by its aesthetics, functionality, and history.

You should NOT buy any of these Speedmaster Pro models if you will be wanting to use this as a diving watch. Get a Seamaster 300M or Planet Ocean for that need.

As for its time keeping accuracy, most owners don't mind it all. If you are very concerned with accuracy, then a mechanical watch, even if it is COSC certified, is probably not the right type of watch for you. A quartz watch will be significantly more accurate. I have heard that people's experiences for the Speedmaster Pros range from -/+ of 0/0 -5/+15. It is not a certified chronometer by the COSC. This watch only needs to be wound every 1 or 2 days and its time adjusted about once every 1 or 2 weeks.

If you end up for some unexpected reason to not like the watch, realize that this watch has a phenomenally high resale value and is very easy to sell on various online auction sites."
