On a very windy Sunday, Nicos and I try to decide what to do for the day. This will probably be one of Nicos and Dennis's last days off before the season starts. We agreed it was too cold for walking or driftwood collecting on the beach. Something, somewhere, tucked away, maybe even indoors would be nice. I looked on Google Maps and searched under attractions. Melissani Cave, Drogarati Cave and other well known attractions popped up. I kept scrolling and waaaaaaaay down the list I came across Memas Kalogiratos Permanent Sculpture Exhibition. Being an amateur sculptor this grabs my attention.

'Lets go here,' I say to Nicos

When we arrived we entered into what looked like someone's driveway, as there was no sign, but Google Maps said we had arrived! At a second glance there stood a few meters away, a selection of sculptures. This must be it! We got out of the car and started walking around. The buildings were shut, but we could hear someone digging near the big house. So, we went to explore and there was an elderly man with his back to us gardening. When we called out to him he didn't turn around and so we called again several times and a little louder. Apprehensively we walked closer not to startle him.

The man was 82 year old Memas (which of course we didn't know at the time). He turned around and greeted us with the biggest smile and gave us both a very strong handshake.

He confirmed we were in the right place and said he would open up for us. So we followed him to the first building. When we went inside emotion welled up inside me. I was so full of joy that we had found this place. The actual tears followed shortly after, when I realised that all the paintings and sculptures were of his own creation. The house was his house, the gardens his gardens and slowly, steadily over a number of years he built the out-buildings - his museum, to exhibit his work.

I took many photos and spoke to his apprentice Harris, who I guess was in his 50's and lives on-site. He told us much about Memas and was happy to show us what they are currently working on in their workshop... at which point I cried again! It's just the two of them as Memas's wife passed away in 2006 and they had no children, but Memas did not appear sad. On the contrary, he was bursting with happiness, contentment, pride and satisfaction.

When we were ready to leave we asked if we needed to pay or give some sort of contribution but Memas refused, saying all he wanted was for people to come, enjoy his work, his gardens and sit and have a coffee in his beautiful courtyard.

Memas has a simple Facebook page with a small following and a Website where you can read more about him. His exhibition is easy to find on Google Maps, situated in between Mazarakata and Peratata in a small dead end road.

Kefalonia never ceases to surprise me. There is so much history on the island, places of interest and of course culture.

Brits in Kefalonia - Importing a Car

Finally Nicos & Eleni are moving to Kefalonia to be with the Lady O family all year round! It certainly has taken a lot of organising.

One of the major milestones was how to bring the car and keep it in Greece without it costing a small fortune. When trying to find out, no two answers were the same and Nicos felt like he was going round and round in circles!

But he did it!

Here's how...

The Greek Embassy website states that;

Individuals (citizens of any European Union member State, Greek citizens or persons married to a Greek citizen) that are residents abroad and wish to settle permanently in Greece, are exempt from import duties on their personal belongings (furniture, car e.t.c.). Permanent residence is the place where an individual is resident for at least 185 days in a 12 month period and where he holds personal and professional bonds. The right for domicile transfer exemptions is founded on proof of residence and work of the applicant himself or his family, for a two year period before settling in Greece'

This is a once in a lifetime exemption certificate!

At first glance Nicos thought this meant you had to be of Greek origin to be entitled to this exemption, however he had heard/read somewhere on Facebook that an expat could do it, but didn't know of anyone who had actually gone through the process. We'd love to hear your story if you've done it.

Having applied for his residency, he was able to book an appointment with the Greek Embassy in London even though he had not yet received his ID card (his official receipt was accepted as proof of residency). To his surprise he was given an appointment fairly quickly (4 days).

He had to take with him;

• Personal Statement (This is done at the Embassy)

• Passport or Identity Card and family's members and Marital status certificate or birth certificate of family members (for foreigners)

• Residence Card in Greece is required for third country (non EU) nationals

• Tax clearance (employment history HMRC) or tax clearance notes (P60) for at least the last two years before settling in Greece and certificate of termination of work (P45).

(In other words someone who has just applied for residency, but has lived out of Greece for the last two years)

• Payroll statements (payslips) at least quarterly per year, monthly detailed bank accounts statements (at least quarterly per year) for the last two years before settling in Greece

. • In the case that the applicant is a company owner or a self-employed person, the necessary supporting documents are defined as follows: company registration, tax clearance (self assessment tax return), invoices, payslips, combined, for the last two years before settling in Greece.

• Council Tax Receipts, Public Utility Bills (electricity, gas, water) at least quarterly per year for the last two years before settling in Greece.

In case of a private use car, motorbike or motorcycle, pleasure boat or private aircraft are transported, documents proving the full and exclusive ownership of the vehicle for a period of at least six months before the application date are required, as well as:

• Vehicle Registration in the name of the applicant issued by the relevant British authority (DVLA e.t.c.) covering a period of at least six months before the application date.

• Driver’s license valid for the above mentioned period.

• Purchase invoice.

• Insurance policy.

NOTE: YOU WILL NEED TWO COPIES OF EACH!

(But Nicos did 3! 😂)

The Greek Embassy were very helpful. The appointment lasted about an hour and a half and cost £103.00 in cash! There and then Nicos was given his exemption certificate.

The next stage was to find a Customs Procedure Agent (which was harder than he thought) to send all of the original documents, together with the exemption certificate to. Nicos eventually found an agent in Patra, Konstantinos Sotiropoulos, who was able to help him through the next stage which was to clear customs. You may be able to do it without one but it takes a lot of the stress away, especially if you don't speak Greek.

The agent will need to know if your car is suitable to import by the way of a Certificate of Conformity, which you can apply for directly from the manufacturer. Once you explain to the manufacturer why you need it, they are happy to email it to you free of charge.

Originally Nicos was asked to take the car to Patra where it would have been quarantined for 2 weeks while the paperwork was being processed, but was allowed to take the car direct to Kefalonia where Nicos liaised with the Customs Office there. This way took longer! It took 3 months for the car to be processed and for each month the local Customs Office charged 80 euros.

The next step was to take the processed paperwork to the Ministry of Transport. Nicos was lucky to have his wonderful partner Dennis at hand once again to help him. Without someone in the know to guide you, it might be advisable to pay a local customs agent. You will be asked to get an MOT (KTEO which lasts two years).

The Ministry of Transport will then process the already processed paperwork and allocate a Greek Number plate to your car. This cost 75 euros payable at Eurobank NOT the Ministry of Transport!

But...before you do that you will need to get Circulation Tax (Road Tax) and it's advisable to do this in January to get your money's worth! Tax is payable from January to January irrespective of when you pay for it (Nicos had to pay the full 385 euros for his car at the end of November even though there was only 1 month of the year left!). He also paid for next years tax.

The whole process took approximately 3 months, was hard work with a lot of effort involved and many emails and phone calls but he got there in the end :-)

and the cost;

Greek Embassy London £103.00
Custom Procedure Agent 300 euros
Customs office 80 euros per month (240 euros)
Number plates (Ministry of Transport) 75 euros
KTEO (MOT) 55 euros
Circulation Tax (Road Tax) 385 euros (But could be more or less depending on the engine size. This was calculated on a 2 litre petrol car)

So, in total it cost Nicos 1560 euros! If you have a smaller engine and don't have to pay twice for Circulation Tax, you could do it for under 1000 euros. But don't forget you will have to get your car to Greece...and that's another story!

Come to Kefalonia

Here we are in July already! I originally wrote this blog at the start of the year (Happy New Year!) but it didn't feel right to publish it then. We personally (like many) knew of several people who were hospitalised with Covid, and sadly some of them didn't make it. It was all a little bit 'too close to home' as they say. We knew of people who couldn't work and were scraping the barrel and someone who was made homeless in the process. Tough times for so many. We thanked the angels everyday for our health and home. With so much uncertainty about the future for so many, talking about holiday's felt a little bit insensitive. I'm not sure it's the right time now to be honest, but with Covid travel rules changing on the 19th July now is as good a time as any!

For some there's a long way before they are out of the woods, and the impact of Covid is still a struggle. With a massive increase in mental health difficulties and a decline in general well-being, it's been really tough for many to think about the future, never mind look forward to it! But for others there is light at the end of the tunnel and starting to think about a holiday is like having Fizz Wiz Popping Candy in your mouth!

So if you are planning on going on holiday look no further than Kefalonia!

Will you be able to go away this year? If you can, there are several reasons why choosing to go to Kefalonia would be the right choice.

I've listed a few...

Firstly...It's a stunning island, quiet and calm
the Greek people
it's safe
good for any budget
the hospitality
the food
the beaches
the views
the history (there is a lot!)
the festivals
and there's so much to do!

People who go to Kefalonia return year after year...it draws you in like a moth to a flame! There's no escaping it!

And when I say it's safe, of course I mean tourists are unlikely to experience crime or violence and women travelling alone often choose Kefalonia as a destination for that very reason. However, these days when we talk about a country 'being safe' we're enquiring about Covid cases. Kefalonia have had very few cases due to the strict rules they have had in place from the onset of the pandemic. Another reason to choose Kefalonia 💓

The Kefalonian people are very resilient. Despite all the hardship they have suffered over the years and last year with a late start to the season and a Medicane that devastated many parts of the island...they brush themselves off and keep going. This year is no different. In the last few months they prepared their shops, restaurants and businesses for visitors. And when visitors arrive, they will smile and welcome you with open arms.

So if you are one of the lucky ones who is able to get away this year...go to Kefalonia!

And when you do, don't miss out on an opportunity to come out on the Lady O, described by many as the 'highlight of my holiday.'

End of Season 2020

Well...the end of the season has arrived, and the Lady O has been taken out of the water.

Little did we know at the start of the year what we were in for; Covid-19, Nicos having to stay in the UK due to travel restrictions and underlying medical conditions, a late start to the season, a Medicane and sadly the sudden death of Dennis's mother.

In the face of challenge Dennis and Nicos without a doubt missed working together, but they managed to find a way to ensure that there was no disruption to the quality of service they have worked so hard to achieve and are proud of. They spoke several times a day and Nicos was able to complete tasks that lifted some of the burden.

When Nicos wasn't doing tasks for Dennis he was keeping himself busy doing jobs around the house and even built a pond!

Just as Pandemic guilt began to turn into gratitude and they’d got into the swing of working in a different way, in mid-September the warning came that a Medicane was on it's way. Dennis had the arduous job of protecting the Lady O. When the warning came, Dennis took the Lady O to the marina (opposite the bay) to get some shelter from the storm. He stayed on the boat for 36 hours without sleep, riding the storm and emptying the rain water that was gushing into the boat while also trying to protect her from crashing into the concrete mooring point. The winds were so fierce the fenders (balloons) were useless, so Dennis improvised by putting lorry tyres on her sides to cushion the blows.

For a few hours while the island suffered a power outage, Nicos sat helplessly not knowing if his partner was safe and feeling quite helpless and guilty he could not be there with him. The thought of Dennis being alone was very upsetting. Dimitra (Dennis’s wife) was also anxious for Dennis’s safety, as she sat in the dark with her daughter hearing the destructive sounds of the storm outside, unable to contact him and with no idea if he was okay. We were all very relieved when Dennis eventually made contact to say all was well. We were very happy to find out that Dennis was not completely alone. Makis Maroulis who joined the team this year, came to his aid when he realised as the storm was worsening (winds got up to 290km an hour) that Dennis may need help.

Luckily the Lady O suffered minor water damage that could have been catastrophic if it wasn’t for Dennis and Makis's bravery. Cruises stopped for a few days while she got cleaned up and once again it was business as usual.

As a team we have several affectionate names for Dennis – 'Duracell Dennis' being one of them as he just keeps going on and on and on! We all felt so proud of him. Keeping the Lady O safe was not easy and the very next day Dennis was out on his crane helping others less fortunate than ourselves (can you hear our clapping and cheers?!?!)

But one month later, almost to the day Dennis’s mum collapsed and died suddenly while in church of a heart attack.

There are no words to describe the shock and sadness that engulfed us all.

This year certainly has been a roller coaster of emotions for us all. Despite all, we know that in many ways we are the lucky ones, and yet it's been a tough ride for all of us. There’s been a lot of anxiety, frustration and tears… but through it all we have managed to stay optimistic, even have a few laughs and a successful summer.

We thank you from the bottom of our hearts to all of you who supported Kefalonia Cruise and the Lady O family this year.

We wish everyone a happy, healthy winter and all being well the Lady O family will be together once more in 2021.

Lady O in the Summer of Covid

Here we are...already in the middle of August, the peak of the season.

It's been a strange season. Usually Nicos would drive to Kefalonia in April with a car full of goodies for the Lady O, excited to see his partner Dennis and plan for the season ahead. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 and Nicos’s underlying health conditions, plus the travel restrictions at the time, he decided it was best not to drive to Kefalonia.

The season didn't start on the 1st May and for a while no-one knew if there would be a season or if tourists would be allowed to visit Greece. But Dennis and Nicos spoke on the phone everyday while they waited to hear if the Lady O would be allowed to operate.

On Facebook groups it was the topic of conversation and there were many mixed views from potential holiday makers and businesses alike. In the meantime, Dennis with friends and family got the Lady O ready wondering if it would all be for nothing. It seemed like an eternity before Greece gave the green light to go ahead.

When we received news that Kefalonia would be open for tourism and the Lady O could operate we were overwhelmed with gratitude and appreciation for how fortunate we were. We know many people who have suffered personally and financially from the current situation and we feel very lucky to be able to work even though just covering costs was looking like the best outcome.

The season officially opened on the 1st July. Even then we didn't hold our breath. Just because people could travel didn't mean they would. We had to do everything in our power to ensure that anyone who wanted to book a cruise on the Lady O felt happy and reassured that Covid regulations had been put in place and they would be safe.

The Lady O was required (as were all the boats) to limit the capacity allowed on board to ensure social distancing could be adhered to. Luckily the Lady O is spacious and has three levels so that wasn't a problem.

Guests would have to wear masks if they needed to go inside for the toilet or bar area, otherwise wearing a mask was not essential. Hand sanitiser has been made available on all three levels and signs displayed to remind guests of the expectations.

We are famous for our delicious BBQ on the beach and as soon as the smell hits them, our guests flock round excited with anticipation to get their food and bite into the perfectly cooked, juicy, mouth-watering lunch that melts on their mouth! However now they have to wait a few minutes longer so the Lady O team can serve them the food rather than the ‘buffet style’ we have had in previous years. They don't mind. The wait is worth it!

Everyone has adjusted well to the measures put in place and surprisingly many tourists have taken their holidays and kept us busy.

Of course, Nicos is a little frustrated that he is not in Kefalonia supporting his partner in the usual way. And Dennis is of course missing him, not only because they are a fantastic team, but he is also missing Nicos’s bad jokes and dancing!

Despite Nicos being here in the UK and Dennis in Kefalonia they have found a little system that has worked for them. They speak daily to ensure everything runs smoothly, making it possible for Dennis to concentrate on taking care of our guests while Nicos has deals with administrative duties such as answering enquiries, taking bookings and responding to TripAdvisor reviews.
The Lady O team take pride in the fact that they respond to every single TripAdvisor review. It is our way of showing our appreciation and thanks for the time, effort and support you give to us.

Thank you to everyone who has supported us this year. Whether you are guests that return to us every year or you joined us for the first time this year. We hope your day with us left you having no doubt at all that your decision to have a holiday in Kefalonia despite Covid was the right choice.

In Memory of Argyrios Vandoros

This blog is in memory of Argyrios Vandoros (Dennis's father) who sadly passed away a year ago.

Argyri was born in 1933 in Cephalonia where he raised a family, with his wife Maria. They had five children: George, Gerasimos, Amalia, Leonidas and Dionysus (Dennis).

Amalia wrote these beautiful words about her father, which I have translated into English as best I could. I wanted to share this as it depicts honestly not only his life but also the struggles of many Kefalonians of his generation. Anyone who knows Dennis and his siblings will know they are a good, hard working, honest family...something Argyrios was very proud of. And they are this way because of him.

Argyris was a man who spent much of his life struggling to raise his children with honesty, dignity, respect, and always with God. He survived the earthquake of 1953, however his little sister Amalia was overwhelmed by the ruins of their home. By himself he pulled her from the ruins (and hence years later he named his daughter Amalia).

Argyris and his remaining siblings (2 brothers & 2 sisters) rebuilt their lives, making their way to America, Athens and Kefalonia.

While his children were still little, Argyris bought his first truck and made transfers from Kefalonia to Athens. Not wanting to pursue this profession he bought his first crane and with his children Gerasimus (Makis) and Dionysius (Dennis) turned it into a successful business with gained respect all over Kefalonia.

Argyrios had a very strong faith in God and ensured he and his family were close to God. That is why he never missed an opportunity to go to church and to read books with Ekklisiastiko content. He always spoke of his beliefs and what he had read to his family and anyone near him, whether he knew them or not.

In 2004 he wrote his own book which contained all the knowledge he had gained over the years. He presented the book the GOLDEN RING SPINNERS to his family.

Argyrus was a man who generously offered help to anyone who needed it. He volunteered in his church and was a chantor. He was a man of great magnificence, Argyrus life ended on 26.06.2019 with dignity. He was happy, content. His life had all the love and respect of his family and their unity and foremost proud of his wife Maria and children.

His work will continue through his wife, his children, his grandchildren and his books.

Αργυριος Vandoros 1933-2019 Ο Αργύρης γεννήθηκε και μεγάλωσε στην Κεφαλονιά όπου και δημιούργησε οικογένεια ,με τι σύζυγο του Μαρία όπου και απέκτησαν πέντε παιδιά τον Γιώργο,τον Γεράσιμο, την Αμαλία, τον Λεωνιδα και τον Διονύση... Ο Αργύρης ήταν ένας άνθρωπος που πέρασε πολλά στη ζωή του και πάλεψε να μεγαλώσει τα παιδιά του με τιμιότητα,αξιοπρέπεια, Σεβασμό και πάντα δίπλα του το Θεό...έζησε το σεισμό του 1953 όπου η μικρή του Αδελφή Αμαλία καταπλακώθηκε από τα χαλάσματα του Σπιτιού τους και με τα ίδια του τα χέρια την έβγαλε από τα χαλάσματα Συντετριμμένος(και γι αυτό το όνομα της κόρης του Αμαλία) έχοντας ακόμα αλλά 4 αδέλφια που άνοιξαν το δρόμο τους στην Αμερική ,στην αθηνα αλλά και στην Κεφαλονιά...Ο Αργύρης πήρε το πρώτο του φορτηγό και έκανε μεταφορές από Κεφαλονιά-Αθηνα και όταν μεγάλωσαν λίγο τα παιδιά του και μην θέλοντας να ακολουθήσουν αυτό το επάγγελμα αγόρασε το πρώτο του Γερανό και με τα παιδιά του Γεράσιμο και Διονύση το έκαναν μια επιτυχημένη επιχείρηση με σεβασμό από όλη την Κεφαλονιά.ο Αργυριος είχε μέλημα του να είναι πάντα κοντά στο θεό αυτος και η οικογενεια του και γι αυτό δεν έχανε ευκαιρία να πηγαινει στην εκκλησία και να ψέλνει και να διαβάζει βιβλία με εκκλησιαστικο περιεχομένο όπου και δεν έχανε ευκαιρία να μιλάει γι αυτά που διάβαζε στην οικογένεια του αλλά και σε όποιον βρίσκονταν κοντά του γνωστό η άγνωστο , και για όλη αυτή τι γνώση που πήρε την έγραψε σε ένα δικό του βιβλίο το ΚΟΣΚΙΝΙΔΙΑ ΡΙΝΙΣΜΑΤΩΝ ΧΡΥΣΟΥ το 2004 όπου το πρόσφερε σε αγαπημένους ανθρώπους Ο Αργυριος ήταν ένας άνθρωπος που μεγαλοψυχα προσέφερε βοήθεια σε όποιον τι χρειαζόταν ήταν ένας άνθρωπος με μεγαλείο ψυχής,Ο Αργυριος έφυγε από τι ζωή στις 26/6/2019 με αξιοπρέπεια ,ευχαριστημένος, πλήρης καθώς είχε όλη την αγάπη και τον σεβασμό της οικογένειας του και από τους συναθρωπους του και πάνω από όλα περήφανος για την γυναίκα του Μαρία και τα παιδιά του . Το έργο του θα συνεχιστή μέσα από τι γυναίκα του,τα παιδιά του , τα εγγόνια του και τα βιβλία του

Melissani Boats

Have you ever wondered about the little blue rowing boats in Melissani Cave?

Each boat weighs approximately 1 tonne and has it's own name!

Every three years they are lifted out from the opening 36m high with a crane for essential repairs or a little lick of paint and TLC, then put back again in readiness for the season and the thousands of passengers that will embark the little blue rowing boats.

Excitingly our lovely Dennis is the man behind the crane!

Melissani Cave, one of Kefalonia's most popular tourist attractions is temporarily closed due to Covid-19, but the locals still prepare for a possible season and Dennis and his Crane play a part in that!

Γερανοί Βανδωρος translated Vandoros Cranes, was established by Dennis's late father Argyrios Vandoros in Kefalonia when Dennis was just a little boy. Dennis would often go to work with him.

Now, Dennis and his brother Makis continue working on the cranes in the winter months when he is not on the Lady O and they have taken part in many important Kefalonian projects, including the recent expansion of the airport. In the summer ...he juggles both!

Dennis the Menace really is his name!

It takes approximately 4 hours for Dennis and Makis to set up the crane 30 metres from the opening and complete the task of getting the 6 boats in and out of the water.

Meet ΘΑΛΕΙΑ!

The underground lake Melissani Cave, located not far from Karavomilo is uniquely exquisite. The 'b' shaped lake is 40x50m wide (narrowing to 3.5m)) and 36m high and was discovered in 1951 by Giannis Petrochilos.
A big part of its roof has fallen down revealing the amazing sight, but there are other caves on the island just like Melissani. Only the local explorers know where these caves are and it makes you wonder just how many more underground caves there could be, yet to be discovered!

Visitors reach the lake by an underground tunnel and hop on one of these beautiful little boats. The guides (often very entertaining), unhurried, create a gentle splash when the oar hits the water. Showing you both parts to the lake, first the sun-lit open lake, then the dark, narrow, almost hidden corner surprises you with a small island full of plants, birds, sounds, smells, echoes and has many stalactites covered with algae and moss. Just spectacular. All your senses will come alive.

If you've not visited Melissani Cave you must! Go and admire this unique natural work of sculpture. Midday is the best time to visit as the sun shines directly above into the cave showing off the beautiful crystal turquoise colour of the waters.
During the peak of the summer season there is often coach loads of people in a very long queue so be prepared to wait (you won't be disappointed) or go early or later in the day when it is quieter.

As you sit on the little blue boat bobbing quietly on the lake and admire it's perfect reflection on the crystal clear water ... take a moment to look up, admire the stunning walls with plants hanging and the abundance of wildlife, and picture the little boats floating down like birds, settling on the water where they now stay for another three years!

Summer 20 vs Covid 19

The 1st May is the official first day of the summer season!

There is a buzz in the air as restaurants, hotels, bars and other businesses all over the island spend months preparing for this day.

Our first cruise of the year would ordinarily be today.

Nicos drives to Kefalonia early April with a car full of goodies for the Lady O and together with Dennis they prepare her for this day.

But not this year.

Not today.

Something else is in the air.

Covid -19

Sadly, many people have already lost their lives to Covid-19 and for those left behind in shock and grieving, life will never be the same.

Many are seriously ill and anxious of being in hospital or having to go to hospital

Others will be in a financial crisis after having lost jobs and businesses and have very worrying and uncertain times ahead

Key workers put their lives at risk

Many will be suffering with poor mental health and anxiety ...

And many will need counselling and therapeutic intervention.

For those people let us spare a moment. If we are one of the lucky ones we can only imagine what they are going through.

May we be thankful for what we have and never take anything for granted.

Greece, like many countries relies heavily on tourism and without tourism there is a risk of financial ruin for many years to come. It's not surprising then that they are keen to reopen the boarders and 'get back to normal.' And many people want to go on holiday...listening to daily updates just waiting for the news that they can fly and they’ll be off!

So, the big question is...will there be a season this year?

Unlike many countries (we won't name and shame!) Greece responded quickly to the pandemic. Even before the first case of Coronavirus was diagnosed in Greece, they had already started examining, testing people and isolating those who were infected. Incoming flights were monitored, and airport quarantining programmes were set up. Rapid social distancing and a ‘strict’ lockdown was put in place.

This measure has saved thousands of lives.

But Greece, like other European countries are now being put under immense pressure to prepare to ease the coronavirus lockdown, despite severe warnings from scientists that the number of new cases being diagnosed is still 'way too high to allow any easing of the lockdown anytime soon' (Professor Paul Hunter, of the University of East Anglia. Many of his scientist buddies echo this view across Europe).

Greece did not ignore the first warning and I for one hope they don’t ignore this one!

As they look ahead and are thinking seriously about opening for Summer 2020 (all be it a little late), discussions are currently underway to decide if it's possible to work towards the 1st July and if so how it can be done safely (The magic word. The million-dollar question).

The financial implication for Greece & the beautiful island of Kefalonia staying closed for the season could be catastrophic. Many hotels, bars, restaurants, care hire companies, airline companies and much more will inevitably go bust (something all nations are trying to avoid).

However...

Opening up to tourism and welcoming people from all over Europe while new cases are still being confirmed would ultimately lead to the virus hitting their shores.

So is it...
Summer 20 vs Covid 19
or is it
Lives vs Economics?

The Greek government have a predicament and options are limited.

We must trust that they will make the right decisions at the right time.

We don’t yet know what or when that is, and we hope it will be sooner rather than later.

Reducing our Carbon Footprint

I was born in 1957. In those days, we didn't have central heating. We burnt wood and coal in our fireplaces and could visibly see the impact of this on our environment...all you had to do was simply look out of the window! We used to have fog and smog for weeks on end and sometimes it was so bad you couldn't see further than a metre or so in front of you.

The consequence of this was that many people suffered with breathing difficulties.

As a child, I often wondered where all the fresh air was coming from....was it unlimited???

After all, we only have what is on, in, and immediately around our planet. At the rate we are going, we will only have another 3 or 4 generations worth? That's not a lot. Global warming is melting the ice caps, raising sea levels and changing weather patterns. The destruction of our rain forests and micro plastics in our oceans means our air supply will most certainly be slowed down or even halted completely.

The consequence of this is not so obvious as the fog and smog I remember from my childhood, but it will be soon enough! We are the cancer of this earth and we will render it uninhabitable and useless....unless we begin to do something about it now.

NOT tomorrow or next week or next year

Governments around the world are slowly waking up and are now taking positive action but there are lots of countries who are lagging well behind.

We've come to rely heavily on transport such as cars, planes and boats, not just for pleasure but for work (and let's face it we all have to work!). Electric cars are becoming more popular but at a great expense many can't afford. We could lessen our trips in our cars, maybe walk more or cycle especially on short trips.

But we can certainly do something about our waste

... that empty bottle, that sweet wrapper etc

On a larger scale we could cut plastic out either partially or if possible completely and start using compostable, biodegradable or vegetable based products which do the same job as plastics but do not harm our environment. Its not just the air that is effected, sea life is dying after being tangled, trapped and eating all the discarded micro plastic.

We (us humans who caused this problem in the first place and are top of the food chain) end up eating the fish which then causes illnesses in us. Again another not so obvious consequence of our actions! But as the saying goes 'You sow what you reap.' There is Cause and Effect in everything we do, sometimes not manifested until years later.

Some of us have been conscious of this for some time, while others are just beginning to realise and others are still oblivious, or simply don't care (I recently went abroad and was really disturbed at the volume of plastic waste on the side of the roads, the pavements, gardens, public areas...even in the remote desert! Wow!)

Our resources are slowly diminishing...but our planet is fighting back with extreme changes in weather...storms, floods, droughts etc!

Here at Kefalonia Cruise, on the Lady O, we have run an annual 'Clean up' cruise for the last 2 years. This year is no different. We will ask for volunteers to join us to clean up Vardiani Island. It's amazing how much rubbish accumulates over the winter. This is rubbish which in time will break up in small pieces which will be eaten up by the local fish, turtles (often killing them), or eventually micro plastic which will stifle the eco system.

We will spend the morning collecting plastic and taking it back to Argostoli to be properly disposed of. We will then enjoy a relaxing afternoon on the beach with a nice BBQ and drinks.....what do you say, would you like to come along? Last year we had 35 people join us, and we collected over 40 big black sacks worth of rubbish.

Please contact us for a place on the Lady O on the 25th May 2020 - it won't cost you anything, we will transport you there, provide the BBQ lunch with wine, water and soft drinks on the beach as a thank you for your hard work in the morning!

Why holidays are good for Us!

So here we are in mid January already. The Christmas break is a distant memory and any rest we may have had has disappeared leaving many of us already feeling worn out! Just the thought of a planned summer holiday is what keeps us going. But actually there is a good reason for this.

Conscious meditation teaches we are not our bodies or our minds. But seeing as most of us live in our body and mind most of the time...we need a break! Conscious meditation is deliberately putting time aside to notice your thoughts and create space, which creates a sense of calm. With practice Conscious meditation can reduce physical pain and reduce stress. It can also improve memory, increase focus and improve sleep.

But sadly few people put time aside to consciously meditate.

Instead we get stuck in ‘Habitual’ meditation - unconscious meditation. You see, we are actually meditating all the time. Whatever you are thinking about is what you are meditating on. For most of us we don’t even think about what we are thinking about. True? It’s just habit.

But this type of meditation doesn’t have the same benefits as

                                                                                 'Conscious' meditation.
                                           We can get stuck in unhelpful thinking styles if we are not careful.

We (humans) have a tendency to think about the same things over and over again, going round in circles. Do you recognise that habit? We can blow things out of proportion or overgeneralise. Or maybe split ourselves in half and talk to ourselves, telling ourselves off with sayings like ‘I should ...I must.’ We label, we self criticise, and jump to conclusions. We become agitated with strong opinions that we try to force on others. All these are habitual. We may even believe that some of these habits are helpful to us. Maybe you’re constantly thinking about the past or the future. Habitual. Constantly distracted with thoughts. Habitual. You get the idea.

Then there’s ‘Nature’ meditation. This requires less effort then conscious meditation while naturally taking us out of our habitual state. As the title suggests it’s natural. When we are in nature, we naturally relax.....whether we are walking in the countryside, sitting on the beach, listening to the waves, feeling the wind on our face, hiking steep mountains, playing with pebbles, leaves. collecting twigs, swimming in the sea, watching birds or gazing at the stars ...just to name a few.

                                             Being in nature has many benefits to our health and well being.

According to research from the University of East Anglia exposure to green space reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, premature death, preterm birth, stress and high blood pressure. Populations with higher levels of green space exposure are also more likely to report good overall health.

Also, exposure to the variety of bacteria present in natural areas may also have benefits for the immune system and reduces inflammation.

Mentalfloss.com goes further. They discuss how the negative ion-rich oxygen found in nature boosts energy. You are less likely to become short sighted, enhances creativity, restores focus, improves relationships and increases a sense of community.

But we don’t need scientific evidence.

We know how we feel when we are in nature.

It’s instinctive. It feels natural. Humans were not meant to live the chaotic habitual lives we have created for ourselves. It's not natural. And due to our ‘habitual’ lifestyles or living in over populated areas, being in nature is not always as easy as it sounds. So we have to consciously make time to be in nature.

That’s why holidays are good for Us!

Kefalonia is the perfect place to enjoy nature, relax and unwind. With luscious green hills, stunning beaches, sunshine, turtles and star gazing, you can guarantee you will enjoy the many benefits of being in nature.

When the Lady O approaches White Rocks I always get the same feeling. The feeling of contentment. A sense of peace and ease. A sense of gratitude and appreciation. A gravitational pull. A sense of being a part of something beautiful. Being present. A sense of getting away from ‘it’ all. No habitual thoughts. No worries.

Just Being.

But don't despair. If you can't have a holiday then go for that walk, or make time to consciously meditate. Consciously create a place of nature in your mind. Imagine the sun on your back, the wind in your hair. Imagine your favourite places, your favourite outdoor activities...and smile.

The world is a beautiful place of peace if you consciously look for it

Boat lifting Greek Style!

It's that time of year again. When the Lady O is taken out of the water the summer season has officially ended.

However even though the season may have ended for the Lady O, for Dennis another season begins.

Dennis, together with his brother Makis have been working on cranes from a very young age. Their late father, who sadly passed away earlier this year founded Γερανοί Βανδώρος (Vandoros Cranes) and the boys continue his good work.

Unlike boatyards in the UK, at the boatyard across Argostoli there isn't a sea lift in sight! With the cranes they take many sailing boats out of the water during this period as well as larger motor boats.

Today Dennis and his brother with the use of two cranes (the larger lifting up to 50 tons) and help from two friends (Spyro and Makis No 2) took the Lady O out of the water. Watching them getting a job done is fascinating. For them working on the cranes is as easy as breathing...it's in their bones, 2nd nature, instinct, seamless!

To the untrained eye (me!) it's like watching a suspense thriller. When I've watched them in the past I watch with eyes half shut through my fingers, petrified they'll drop her!

Back in the UK Nicos and I just wait for Dennis to send us a message telling us the jobs been done...

and in a typically relaxed Greek fashion style of course the job is done!

They are involved in many projects on the island. They contributed to the construction of the new bridge to Assos on the coastal road, and have been working very hard on the Kefalonia airport expansion, which is 'almost' complete! I say almost!

While Dennis and Makis continue their winter work, the Lady O will have a few months well earned rest and before you know it, she will be back in the water again ready and waiting for Summer 2020 to begin. This is always a very exciting time.

What to do about Holiday Blues?

We’ve all experienced that feeling where we can’t wait for our holiday. We count down the months, days, minutes and seconds from the moment we book it. And then...the day arrives. We’re so excited for our holiday we happily go through hell to get there! We get up at stupid O’clock. We make our way to the airport. Like little ants we patiently walk in lines, checking our bag in, going through security, waiting for the plane. Every second knowing we are taking one step closer to our holiday destination...nothing else matters!

THEN you arrive! As you take your first step out of the aeroplane the warm air hits you! Instantly your energy lifts. The excitement to get to your accommodation, drop your bags and hit the beach or bar is uncontainable.

Maybe you’ll just chill by the pool, maybe the beach, maybe a boat trip, maybe an excursion. Where will you eat? What will you do tomorrow? Who cares! You’re on holiday and you can do whatever you want!

You take hundreds of beautiful photos and post them on Facebook making all your friends jealous!

But then....the time comes. The holiday is over. It’s the last day. Making your way to the airport when departing is not as exciting as when you were arriving. You wish you could close your eyes, open them and just be home. The thought of lining up like ants, queue after queue fills you with dread...and perish the thought of a delay. You could actually kill someone!

At best you may be looking forward to getting back home, but for others the end of a holiday can actually bring on the feeling of real post holiday depression! We put these bad feelings down to the fact our holiday is over. So we book another holiday for the following year and start the whole process again of counting down the months, days, minutes and seconds.

But what else can you do? There are many other factors that contribute to the holiday blues.

The following 5 tips are obvious but I’ve had to learn them the hard way!

1. Don’t go straight back to work!
It’s tempting to want to spend as much time as you can abroad, arriving back late in the evening and back at work the very next day. I’ve done this! Believe me it undoes the whole purpose of your holiday! You will feel more tired than you did before your holiday.

2. Don’t underestimate jet lag...even if you haven’t been that far!
According to Dr Peter Pendergast of Venus Medical it takes a few days to adjust after being in a different time zone. The disrupted rhythm results in a host of unpleasant symptoms, including tiredness, headache, disorientation, poor concentration and indigestion.

3. Drink plenty of water!
This may sound boring for some of you but from day one of your holiday drink at least 2 litres of water a day. The heat, alcohol (Some of us tend to drink more alcohol during our holiday...because we are on holiday!) and salty foods cause dehydration. Flying also contributes to dehydration! So it’s probable you’ll arrive at your destination dehydrated and return even more dehydrated!

4. Stay in the now!
We have a tendency to hate our lives when we get back! We hate work, we hate the rain, we hate the traffic, we hate the hussle and bustle etc etc. We look back at our holiday photos and we wish our holiday lasted a little bit longer. In fact we want to move there!

’Let’s buy a house!’ (Rich coming from me hey!)

Escapism can be a good strategy sometimes but if we allow it to overtake our lives it can be very unhealthy and actually cause depression.
Stay in the moment. Even during dark times, if you look you will see something that makes you smile.

5. Reflect!
What were you doing on holiday that made you feel good? Eating healthier? Sleeping more? Walking more? Reading more? Being barefooted? Spending more time alone? Spending more time with loved ones? Working less? On your phone less?

You don’t need to wait for next years holiday to repeat that experience.

Yes, our work commitments may make if difficult to embrace the slower pace enjoyed while on holiday, but there may be changes you can incorporate in your daily life, which may help to improve how you feel. Look at the areas of your life that need more or less attention and make the changes necessary.

Focus on small joys, the little things in life that brighten your day and warm your spirit. Make the changes needed to be happy all year round 😊

Argostoli Lighthouse

The island of Kefalonia has an energy that pulls you... and the lighthouse of Saint Theodoroi near Argostoli is no different. We pass the lighthouse every day on the Lady O and my pre-recorded message tells our guests all about it. 'On your left you will see...'

But the lighthouse is very easy to get to by foot, sitting halfway between Lassi and Argostoli and the views are well worth it, with beautiful beaches and coves along the way.
People come morning, day and night to marvel at it's structure and take memorable photos.

And the sunset...WELL!

The lighthouse is a popular spot with the locals and tourists, who often sit on one of the benches to watch the sun go down, or sit on the rocks drinking a can of beer. You'll see couples smooching, others alone reflecting and despite the many visitors and people often in each others way while they wait to take photos, it's a place of tranquility.

In fact at any angle at any time of day the lighthouse looks beautiful

It's a masterpiece x 2!

I say x 2 because the lighthouse that stands today is not the original!

This is common knowledge to the locals and those who do their homework, but otherwise there is no way of knowing this as there is no historical information sign to tell you about it.

The lighthouse of Saint Theodoroi just outside of Argostoli, the capital of the island is a circular structure with 20 columns and its tower is 8 m tall. The building has a rather simple and Doric architectural style, while its focal plane is 11 m. It was originally built in 1828 by Charles Napier who was the British Administrator who ruled at the time.

But the devastating earthquake in 1953 destroyed the lighthouse and many other stunning buildings, monuments and churches.

Like a beautiful woman hiding her pain and anguish, Kefalonia hides her suffering well
(me trying to be poetic!)

Although there are abandoned villages and houses scattered about giving a hint of the destruction that occurred in the earthquake, there were a few wonderful people who sacrificed much of their life to restore Kefalonia to her former glory...hiding the tragedy and healing her pain (me trying to be poetic again!).

One of those people was Takis Pavlatos a local civil engineer who rebuilt the lighthouse in 1960 according to its original architectural design. In fact Takis had designed, supervised and contributed to most of the reconstruction of Kefalonia, Ithaca and Zakynthos after the earthquake, including many churches and he wrote the first Greek anti-seismic regulation in 1959. He received three awards by the Academy of Athens.

Takis offered his services for free!

On the lighthouse itself there is a stone plaque (written in Greek) in-scripted with the names of all the stone carvers that contributed to the rebuild of the lighthouse. At the bottom if you look closely you will see Takis Pavlatos name, faded. He passed away at the age of 88. Having dedicated so much of his life to the island he loved and having left such a great legacy, it's a little tragic his name is barely readable.

Today the lighthouse still works and as well as being a popular location for the locals and tourists, it is also a favourite spot for wedding photos...You can see why.

However as well as Takis faded name, there are two things that make me a little sad when I go to the lighthouse and that is the graffiti (although every now and then she is given a lick of paint) and the rubbish. Unfortunately as Kefalonia becomes increasingly popular this is becoming more of an issue.

So if you visit, admire this magical historical place, sit, chill, reflect, take your photos....but please put your rubbish in one of the bins or take it with you.

And your photo is your memory, no need to leave your mark on the lighthouse...

Because that would be another tragedy and Kefalonia has already had her fair share!

Donation to The Saviour's Orphanage

Earlier this year T shirts were kindly donated to the Lady O by Mary Willis. In the spirit of giving and receiving we decided to donate the money from the sales to The Saviour's Orphanage Home.

The orphanage was founded in 1919 with the initial aim of housing children who had lost their parents in the First World War. This year was their 100th year anniversary and they had a bid celebration to tribute this massive achievement.

The institute does not receive any government funds. It is maintained by donations made by well-known and anonymous people, starting from 1 euro, to whatever each person can and is willing to offer.

The Saviour's Home

Kefalonians' and holiday makers often donate practical help as well as items to the orphanage, anything from colouring pencils, washing powder to clothes...literally anything the Home needs.

We raised 200 Euros from the sales of the T shirts!

When Dimitra contacted the orphanage to ask them what they would like us to buy with the money they asked for 4 pairs of shoes.

The shoes were for 2 girls and 2 boys. With the change we bought each child a set of clothes; 2 dresses for the girls and 2 sets of shorts and T shirts for the boys.

The ages ranged from 2-6 years old.

As always the orphanage was very grateful for the kind generosity and on their behalf we would like to thank everyone who helped to raise the money by buying a T shirt.

Next year we plan to raise money again for the Orphanage. This is something we will think about over the winter.

We will keep you posted once we've decided what/how we plan to do this!

We know our contribution is small in the grand scheme of things, but the orphanage appreciate any donation no matter how small.

It is not the quantity given but the kindness given that touches their hearts...

Fund raising for a Defibrillator in Argostoli

Taking safety seriously, last year the Lady O purchased a defibrillator. Dennis and Nicos were trained and certificated by Peter Lee.

Peter Lee, with his extensive background in paramedics and a first aid responder, continues his good work. Recently together with George Potamianos from Outdooor Kefalonia (also well known on the island for his charity work to raise money for the hospital and other good causes), they organised a charity Jeep Safari event which took place in aid of raising funds to purchase a defibrillator for Argostoli Sqaure, as well as spare pads and batteries.

On Monday 13th August there was a great turn out at the Gentleman's Retreat in Mount Roudi (George's cabin that he built himself!), raising money to purchase medical equipment for the square, which will provide lifesaving first aid.

The campaign has been called 'Openyoureyes'.

Many local businesses, friends & family of George, and even holiday makers took part in the event.
Food was prepared by George's lovely wife, wine was donated, as well as lighting and music from the organisers of the famous Saristra Festival, making it a truly magical evening.

George and his crew picked up many of us from Argostoli and took us (the dodgy way!) to his amazing secret man cave hideout (but I think not for long!). Along the way we stopped several times to admire the spectacular views of Kefalonia, Ithaca and even mainland Greece.

Once we arrived George shared his family history and told us how his man cave came to be.
With relaxing music in the background people chatted and admired the views, taking photos of the sunset.

Words can't really describe the phenomenal experience

Peter Lee then took to the Mic and reminded everyone why we were there.

To finish off the most spectacular evening, a Greek gentleman very knowledgeable in astronomy gave a short talk about the Perseid Annual Meteor showers ,which arises when Earth passes through streams of debris left behind by comets and asteroids, known to produce about 60 visible meteors per hour depending on light pollution. Due to the full moon the night was bright...but I did see two shooting stars before it was time to come back down to earth and return to Argostoli!

The evening raised over 2000 euro's!

So the purchase can now go ahead and a decision as to where the defibrillator will be placed will be decided once a meeting with The Mayor takes place :-)

Great news indeed.

It was an honour to take part in the very worthy event.

Souvlaki Anyone!?!

Vegetarians and vegans please accept my apologies in advance for this blog!

This one’s for the meat lovers out there!

Greeks are known for loving their food and having a healthy diet (if you exclude the yummy cakes and pastries! But for now let’s not talk about them either!!)

Many Greeks grow their own fruit and vegetables and as you explore Kefalonia you’ll see lemon trees, orange trees and olive trees in abundance. With their home grown vegetables they’ll make the most amazing dishes.

But they are also known for being a culture that love to eat meat, with popular dishes such as Kefalonian meat pie, Kleftico, Stifado, Pistachio, Moussaka, meatballs and so much more.

Then there is Souvlaki...simple in comparison to many of the traditional Greek dishes.

Due to its simplicity Souvlaki has become a popular fast food meal consisting of small pieces of meat, usually pork or chicken but can also be lamb. Cooked on a BBQ or grill on skewers it’s often eaten straight off the skewer.

This way of cooking has an ancient history in Greek culture that goes right back before the 17th Century BC. Excavations in Greece have unearthed stone cooking supports with indentations that were likely used to hold skewers.

Back then the meat would have been served on it’s own. In the present time Souvlaki is served in various ways. It can be served with pita bread, fried potatoes, lemon, salad, rice and sauces.

Souvlaki is served in all Greek restaurants and some ONLY serve souvlaki!

On our famous BBQ Cruise, Pork and Chicken Souvlaki is cooked on a BBQ on the beach and is very popular with all of our guests. Served with Greek salad, pitta bread, tzatziki and wine!

We do provide alternatives for vegetarians and vegans so everyone is catered for :-)

A simple chicken souvlaki recipe

4 boneless chicken breasts (cut into 2 cm cubes)

4 tbsps olive oil

juice of 1 lemon (or more if you like lemon)

1 clove of garlic, minced

2 tbsp dried oregano

salt and freshly ground pepper

1. Place the cubed chicken and all the ingredients in a bowl and mix well with your hands. cover and allow to marinade for an hour.

2. To avoid your skewer sticks from burning when cooking your souvlaki, soak them in water!

3. Thread the chicken pieces on the skewers comfortably. Avoid squashing them together too tightly as they won't cook properly.

4. Cooking time depends on whether you are using your cooker grill or cooking on the BBQ. On the grill it takes approximately 20 minutes, on the BBQ between 8-10minutes (turning frequently)

5. Serve with...whatever you like!

Back in March Kefalonia Cruise encountered Lester Hughes, an amazing man from Wales who wouldn't sell us his vending machine! Instead he wanted to exchange his item (part of his Swop my Fat project).

What could we offer him? How about a private cruise for two!?!

He was delighted and immediately announced what he had in his possession in order to keep his project going.

And so the question 'What would you swap for a private cruise for two?' was born!

A month or so later and after some very strange proposals, Lester announced the lucky winner to be Debra Harrison.

Wanting to share the experience with her sister Lisa and her partner Robert as well as her husband Michael, Debra exchanged her cruise for a BBQ Cruise for 4!

The island of Kefalonia, with its stunning scenery, beautiful people, warm blue seas, tasty food and delicious wines has been my favourite Greek island for many years. In addition to this, it is home to ARK, an animal shelter that helps the stray cats and dogs on the island. Being a lover of all things furry, knowing that the many stray animals are cared for is important to me, and one of the many reasons I travel to this island time after time.

My love of animals is what led to me taking in my lovely (albeit slightly crazy) cat, Lottie. She was a stray at my husband’s allotment, (hence the name) and whilst most normal people tend to take fruit and vegetables home, I eventually took home a cat!

In the days and weeks following, I would often wonder how she had got to the allotment in the first place, and this became the inspiration for writing a story based on her imaginary life before we met. And so the tale began, and along with the help of various people along the way I eventually finished the book, printed and self-published it.

Browsing through Facebook one day I came across a competition on one of the Kefalonia pages, for items to be offered as part of a ‘Swap’ project run by a man called Lester Hughes. I do enjoy a good competition and having a bit of a ‘Eureka’ moment, I offered a copy of my book in exchange for a cruise on board the ‘Lady O’ boat in Kefalonia. I was delighted when eventually Lester contacted me to let me know that yes, he had chosen my offer and I was to receive the prize! Amazing!

So, fast forward to July and along with my husband Michael, Sister Lisa and her partner Robert we arrived for our trip on board the Lady O. We were greeted by Nicos, who along with the rest of the crew welcomed us and treated us like VIP’s for the rest of the day.

The cruise was so much fun. We swam in the warm turquoise seas at White Rocks, where we also enjoyed cocktails and beers on the beach. At Rabbit Island we snorkelled, we covered ourselves in rejuvenating clay, we ate a delicious beach barbeque, we drank unlimited wine and (no doubt encouraged by the said wine), we even danced in the sea! The crew put on a special show, but not wanting to spoil the surprise for those of you still to experience the day, I won’t go into detail. Just know that it was brilliant!

As amazing as all of this was, I think the highlight of the day for me was just to be cruising along the Ionian Sea, marvelling at the stunning scenery and lapping up every moment of this special day.

It is also great that I have made new friendships with Nicos and his wife Elaine, and Lester who had the initiative to put the brilliant ‘Swap’ project together in the first place. My book ‘Lottie got Lost’ is now in the hands of a publisher, and I am hoping that maybe one day, it will be read by children everywhere.

Private Cruise in Kefalonia

We set off from Argostoli at 9am and slowly make our way to Lixouri to pick up more guests

On our way to White Rocks we pass the old windmill and lighthouse and as we do we give a brief history of both structures
Admire the stunning views of secret coves as we make our way to White Rocks
Once at White Rocks (only accessible by boat) you can snorkel, play beach games, kayak (all provided) or swim in the crystal clear waters

Our next stop is Vardiani Island. By now guests are feeling hungry. While they explore the island or relax, Andreas prepares a delicious BBQ lunch - chicken & pork souvlaki served with traditional Greek salad, tzatziki and pitta bread, together with unlimited wine followed by water melon.
You’ll wonder where the day went as by now it’s already approximately 3:30pm! Time for a spot of dancing! The boys have become famous for a little bit of dancing...You can choose to join in or sit back and relax. The playlist lasts for half an hour, then it’s time to move onto our next stop

On our way back to Lixouri there’s another spot of dancing on the top deck of the Lady O. Don’t fancy dancing after a long day in the sun?! No problem, chill out on the lower deck or take shade at the back or inside. Everyone is catered for!
We return to Lixouri approximately 5:30pm and Argostoli 6pm.

Escape to Kefalonia

It’s the middle of June and you haven’t booked your summer holiday yet! Still trying to decide where to go? Want to try a new destination? Can’t understand why some people go to the same place year after year?

For many there is only one destination...Kefalonia!

Although the largest of the Greek Ionian Islands, Kefalonia was relatively unheard of until the Hollywood blockbuster, Captain Corelli’s Mandolin starring Nicolas Cage and Penelope Cruz.

Even though the film was romantasised in true Hollywood style, set in the Second World War during the German and Italian Occupation, it featured true events of the massacre of the Italian troops by the Germans in September 1943.

That typical ‘postcard’ image of old Greek man or woman sitting on a chair comes to life when you chat to them. They will enthusiastically tell you sad stories from these dark days they remember so clearly. A decade later the island suffered a massive earthquake, also featured in the film. The island is abundant in history, going back to where it’s name originates, to Greek mythology and so much more.

Don’t like history? No problem!

With stunning beaches (many only accessible by boat), starry nights, breathtaking sunsets, magical caves, a national park, two castles, popular resorts, various activities and excursions, amazing traditional Greek food, trendy and traditional bars scattered about, and a laid back approach to life, what else could you ask for?

The beaches in Kefalonia are among the most photogenic in Greece. Some holiday makers have compared it to the Caribbean islands, only difference being Kefalonia is closer (3 1/2 hours flight) and cheaper!

With a car you can go off and explore. Go off the beaten tracks, visit small villages or find one of the many deserted beaches. Hiking is also very popular in Kefalonia and wildlife is abundant.

Clean Up Cruise 2019

Well we did it. When I say we ...I mean You!

Thank you to the 35 volunteers who collected 40 + bags of rubbish from Vardiani Island today!

Last year we did our first Clean Up Cruise with 22 Volunteers. This year as soon as we announced we were running the cruise again, within 2 days we had 40 volunteers!

I was mega excited that I would be part of it this year as last year I was organising and writing a blog about it from the UK.

But as luck would have it, the cruise was originally set for Sunday 5th May but due to bad weather it was cancelled and rearranged for the 12th May. I had to come back to the UK due to my work commitments and many of the original volunteers also couldn’t make it.

I can’t believe I’ve missed out again! Perhaps in 2020 I’ll be 3rd time lucky!

But there was a second surge of interest and within 24 hours we had 35 volunteers!

And it was a great success!

Once again 40 + bags were collected. And they could have collected more!

It’s so sad to see such a beautiful place in such a state. And that’s why we all have to do our bit. It’s only a small contribution but if we all do our bit it would make a huge difference.

We weren’t the only ones cleaning up this weekend. iSea (Environmental conservation organisation) also hosted a beach clean up this weekend. They cleaned 4 beaches - Mounda, Skala, Poros & Karavomilos.

Perhaps Kefalonia could have an annual Beach Clean weekend! Although I know many individuals who pick up litter every time they visit a beach :-)

Dionisis Vandoros, Nicos Nicolaou and the crew made sure all the volunteers were rewarded for their hard work by preparing a freshly cooked BBQ on the beach after the clean up.

And the lovely Alexandra joined the team and gave free massages to anyone in need!

‘What a fantastic day and not only did we collect about 40 plus sacks of rubbish, Nicos, Andreas, Dionisis and Dimitra provided us with a fantastic lunch of chicken and pork Souvlaki and Greek salad, Ztatziki, pita bread and copious amounts of wine.

On the way back we were entertained by a dancing Nicos (those hips)!! And he’s very good at pole dancing!! We were waited on hand and got and nothing was too much trouble.’

As it was Christine Wormsley’s birthday yesterday, Nicos also got his guitar out and the crew and volunteers sang 'Happy Birthday' to her on the beach. I think she’s forgiven Ian for letting the cat out of the bag!

April 2019 Update

April Update 2019

There’s a buzz of excitement in the air in Kefalonia during the month of April. Easter is approaching which is a big event in Greece, and the locals are preparing for the season ahead. You can hear strimmers in the distance almost anywhere and see people painting shopfronts and buildings. And at the Marina there's the odd person here and there tinkering away quietly on their boat.

But work also continues in developing Argostoli. Last year they revamped the Square, this year they are working on the seafront and some roads leading to the square are being made for pedestrians only.

At the moment it looks a bit like a building site with slow progress, but once complete I'm certain it will look amazing and will be user friendly for the tourists in peak season.

They have also created a one way system, cycle lane and skate board area by Argostoli Port.

The Weather!

We can’t ignore the fact that is has rained A LOT over the past few weeks and although this has meant work comes to a halt during those periods, the Greeks seem to take it in their stride. After all the air is warm, the flowers are out and the fruit trees are blossoming. All signs that the weather is improving and summer is on it’s way.

Of course we too are preparing for summer 2019. Dionisis has winter work to do when the Lady O is out of the water, however he began months ago organising and ordering things she will need.

Before Nicos arrived from the UK the Lady O was already back in the water!

Unfortunately last year due to health issues Nicos was not able to be in Kefalonia from the start of the season, but this year he will be here from April – October and cleaning has begun.

While the men have been working hard, Dimitra and I have been going for long walks from Argostoli Campsite to the Marina to check how they are doing! It's a beautiful walk that takes 2 hours round trip. I highly recommend a stroll along the treelined road, which provides shade and has some stunning views along the way.

The season officially begins on the 1st May and on the 5th May is our Clean Up Cruise to Vardiani Island. We are already fully booked for this event.

Socialising

Despite being busy busy busy, now is a great time to catch up with our friends, go to our favourite restaurants for a Chicken Souvlaki, Moussaka, fresh fish or Greek Salad. And let’s not forget the lovely Greek pastries and cakes. Oh and of course let’s not forget the odd cocktail!

Once the season kicks off everyone is busy and no-one sees or speaks to each other again until October!

Birthday Celebrations

April is also the month of Dimitra’s birthday. Due to my work commitments in the UK, this is the first time I have been on the island to celebrate with her. It was a wonderful evening..........

So there you have it!

Be a Tortoise!

Although Kefalonia is famously known for it's turtles rather than tortoises, tortoises & terrapins are also quite common Greece. Although rarely seen, Nicos and I once had the privilege of rescuing a tortoise from Avithos beach. We lovingly named him Harry Avi!

I'd like to take the credit for writing the following article, but it was written by a talented young lady - Jasmine Rose Elliston. I felt compelled to share it as she eloquently highlights a very important message that we all need reminding of every now and then.
I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did.

For a long time, I thought fast and eager was the way to be.
Better to be busy, making plans and goal-setting. Achieve, achieve, achieve.

Living in a high-speed city doesn’t help either. Road rage, construction noise, everyone rushing around pretending that they’re going places. When really they’re avoiding their work colleague on the street, trying to catch the early train home or pacing to the post-office to return a delivery before the queue gets too long.

‘I don’t have time’ has become fashionable; accepted amongst the people we converse with. Forever cramming in things that don’t matter to us, or things we ‘ought’ to do. We can’t wait for things to feel over and done with — then we’ll have time and energy to do as we please.
But the reality is; life is going to keep moving.

“Life is short.” A sentence that makes me feel motivated yet pressured.
As if I need to tick off my to-do list now, smash my goals now. Travel, try new things, meet new people, read lots of books, learn a language amongst all the other day-to-day things.

Do this, do that, quickly! Before life flashes you by!
I say — slow down.

I’m not saying these ideas aren’t good or worth pursuing. I’m just saying these things are ideas. And you don’t need to do them all right now.

You don’t have to travel the world, you might just fancy a few trips every year. You don’t have to wear what’s in fashion, you can keep wearing what you like.
You don’t have to run a marathon, you might just like jogging for fun.

You don’t even have to keep reading this.

Life happens in chapters. Things will happen when they’re meant to. Stop trying to discover the later chapters — it only ruins this one.

Choose things that align with you, and pursue them in a way that’s not rushed. How are you meant to enjoy all the things you set out to do if you’re limiting the time you spend on them because you’re trying to cram in everything else?

You can’t be present with where you are and what you’re doing when you’re thinking about the next thing. Even right now as I type this, I’m aware of all the other things I need to get done and want to do. But actually, they can wait.
Sure, I’ll feel a great sense of accomplishment from folding my washing, taking the bins out and calling my family. I like getting things done. But when I’m reflecting back on my life, I’m not going to say: ‘I’m so glad I made more time to do more washing’.

What do you do for you? What’s your happy place? Do you go there often?
It shouldn’t be a once in a while, self-care thing. It should be as necessary as your washing.

Tortoises, that spend most of their lives on land, have their eyes looking down at objects in front of them.

So keep focused on yourself and what you want. Stop worrying about what other people are doing, how much they’re doing and obsessing about what they might think of you.

We live on a blue dot. We’re all trying to figure out that concept and what role to play here.

Tuck yourself away in your own shell more often and touch base with who you are and what’s inside. It’s important to live a life that’s your own.
Embrace moving slow, with an aim to live a more present and intentional life.
Be a tortoise.

Should Kefalonia be twinned with Wales?

So , if you read my previous blog you’ll know Nicos and I recently visited North Wales on a very exciting adventure to meet Lester Hughes and swap a Private Cruise for 2 people on the Lady O for a vending machine!

I visited Wales many years ago well before I had even heard of Kefalonia and did the obligatory touring thing and climbed Snowdonia (Well I tried!), and it was a great visit.

But this time was different. Not only did we meet some wonderful people and stay in a gorgeous cottage, I couldn’t help but notice how much Kefalonia and Wales had in common.

Mountain views & National Parks - We have Mount Aenos, they have Snowdonia
Streams and waterfalls
Forests

Wildlife - We have seals, turtles ,dolphins, wild horses , goats and rabbits with silver teeth because of the composition of the soil and so much more.
They have Puffins , wild goats , seals, dolphins, wild ponies , and even baby dragons!

Villages

Stone houses

Ruined and abandoned houses
Hidden gems
Small paths
Castles (We have Saint Georges & Assos Castle, they have Criccieth , Caernarfon, Harlech, Beaumaris and Conwy castle to name a few)
Boats

Sheep! (I think there are more sheep in Wales than people!)

And of course... that community vibe of everyone being connected, caring and helping each other (although I have been told not all Welsh people are so! But then not all the Greeks are so either so I’ll keep that in as another common factor!)

Geraint Jones, the owner of Rhosydd Bach Cottages where we stayed lives on a traditional working farm. They produce their own fruit and vegetables and have ducks, chickens and of course the obligatory cats and other various animals that help put a smile on your face. Guests are welcome to sample the produce and do a spot of gardening if they wish! They also have BBQ and outside eating area for all to use and a view of both the sea and the mountains! His way of living is so similar to many Kefalonian’s who live in their traditional houses and produce their own produce and have live stock.

I truly envy this way of life and found myself feeling the same way I do when I’m in Kefalonia.

He has numerous little corners for you to escape and read a good book or simply to take in the spectacular views.

But I hear you saying...’Ah yes, but what about the weather?’ AHA, well Geraint tells me that Pwllheli on the Lleyn Peninsula in Gwynedd, North Wales has its own little weather system going on. The Gulf stream brings warm water, and warm air from the tropical Atlantic to northern Europe. This helps keep the area several degrees warmer than it would otherwise. It’s often the case that when other parts of Wales have snow, they have sun! And that certainly was our experience.

So another box ticked!

North Wales was also the setting for the famous 1970’s series The Prisoner, while Kefalonia was the location for the film Captain Correlli’s Mandolin! Just one more thing they have in common, although I haven’t listed them all!!!

After all, how much content can you put into a blog before it turns into a book!?

Kefalonia and Wales are not twinned but they certainly could be! If you can’t get to Kefalonia this year but want to get away, North Wales is a great choice. Go and explore what else Kefalonia and Wales have in common.

You will leave with similar nostalgic memories!

What would you SWAP for a Private Cruise?

Do you remember as a kid bartering in the playground with your mates ‘I’ll swap you a cola cube for a pear drop,’ or that marble, sticker, or football card!

We didn’t think of money then. What a shame we have to now. But the truth is no-one really wants to. If we can get our hands on a freebie or a bargain we’re ecstatic. We tell all our friends and bore everyone to death with our exciting story! Why is that?

The history of bartering dates all the way back to 6000 BC. When money was invented, bartering didn't end there , and due to lack of money during the Great Depression in the 1930's bartering became popular once more. (https://www.mint.com/barter-system-history-the-pas t-and-present)… And there you go! (Said in a Greek accent)

All I know is back in the day in my dad’s village in Cyprus, money wasn’t important. My grandparents, great uncles and aunties had loads of kids and never worried if they had enough money to feed or clothe them, and an exchange of items was common practice. Milk for eggs, oranges for figs, haircut for shoes etc etc...you get the drift.

In Kefalonia this is still common practice. You’ll still find people happy to trade their service for goods rather than money, for example a local man harvesting your olives for olive oil rather than money. Isn’t that one of the reasons we love Kefalonia so much? The Greeks are known to be helpful and kind, often not wanting any money, happy for you to pay them back just with your hospitality. I've recently found out the Welsh are very similar! (This has inspired me to write a 'Part 2' on this story. 'Kefalonia twinned with Wales!' 😂 Coming Soon!!!)

So all is not lost. There are a few people out there who prefer to cut out the middle medium (money) and get what they want by offering something back in return.

We came across Lester Hughes from Wales on facebook advertising a mini vending machine that we were interested in buying for the Lady O. But he didn’t want money, he wanted to know what we could offer him in exchange?

A little confused at first, Lester went on to explain that he swaps goods for goods rather than money. He was so fed up with being bombarded with adverts that encourages us to buy ‘this’ and ‘that’, so he decided to experiment with a project wondering how far he could go trading items for items rather than money. That was 2 years ago! His first swap was a jar of fat!

Lester swapped a 'Hairy Brick' for the vending machine with his friend Dafyn Jones (The guy in the middle of photo below). That's right, a hairy brick!

As well as being fed up with adverts and competitions promising you could win a car (but you have to spend £5 per minute calling a premium number), he was also inspired by his grandfather who way back in the 70s did things for people for nothing. They would always come back and give him something, be it a cake or loaf to express their gratitude. That’s how society was back then.

And so … Kefalonia Cruise SWAPPED A private day or evening cruise on the Lady O for two people for the vending machine!

It’s not the first time we’ve exchanged a cruise for goods. Last year Peter Lee delivered AED defibrillator training to the crew in exchange for a sunset cruise! An exchange of goods rather than money somehow has a feel good factor that money could never give to all those involved.

Nicos and I travelled to Wales to collect the vending machine and stayed at Rhosydd Bach Cottages. We didn't pay for that either! Lovely Lesley did another swap with the owner Geraint Jones (another friend! You make lots of friends when money isn't involved!) so we could stay there! The cottage was set on beautiful grounds and Geraint was very welcoming, telling us lots of stories about the Welsh and Lester himself (More about Geraint and his cottage in Part 2!)

Dafyn then took us to his wife's beautiful shop Lavender House, where we had coffee and chatted the morning away.

As for Lester, he is not keeping this cruise for himself! He will exchange it for something else, keeping his experiment alive.

He is offering this up for swaps! He's looking for the strangest, funniest, craziest swap offer!

Christmas in Kefalonia

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to spend Christmas in Kefalonia?

Well it’s certainly a lot different from the long, hot sunny days cruising round the island on the LadyO!

Christmas is a very special time of the year in Kefalonia. Although the most important celebration is at Easter, Christmas is still very popular too.

The official celebrations last for 12 days starting on Christmas Day until 6th January, although the festive season starts from the beginning of December as there are many saints in this month. One of the most important Saints in the Greek Orthodox religion is Saint Nicholas, although he doesn’t deliver presents to the children on Christmas day like most countries, that privilege is left to Saint Vasilis on New Year’s Day.

Saint Nicholas is the patron Saint of Sailors and instead of a Christmas tree that we relate to, Greek locals will decorate wooden boats, and if you go to a harbour area you will often see the boats adorned with lights. That said, Christmas trees are becoming more popular and you will often find them in homes with nativity scenes at the base of them.

On the run up to Christmas local school children perform plays and you can even attend a pantomime by the Thatasso Theatro. ‘Oh no you can’t’ ‘Oh yes you can’. This year’s pantomime was Scrooge, held at the Capitol Restaurant Theatre near Fanari lighthouse. Some of the larger towns proudly display decorations along the streets and there is a small Christmas market held in Argostoli square with stalls, a huge tree and live music playing.

Then on Christmas Eve morning, young children from the local villages visit door to door singing ‘Kalanta’ (Christmas carols, although not as we know them) with a metal triangle or small drum. The villagers then give them sweets or small amounts of money to say thank you. Later in the day, older choirs will gather in the streets with guitars and mandolins. It’s a beautiful tradition that really spreads the spirit of the festive season.

Christmas day itself is a time for families to get together and enjoy a traditional meal. In old traditions, this used to be something called ‘Augolemono’ which is thick chicken or goat soup with eggs and lemon. Thankfully, it’s more common to see a roasted joint on the table nowadays. Of course, no Christmas dinner would be complete without a healthy portion of homemade wine and festive sweets made from local grown fruits, almonds, raisins and dried figs.

But what is the weather like? I hear you ask. Well, I wouldn’t recommend jumping off the gangplank of the LadyO, as the water is a very fresh 18 degrees this time of the year compared to the lovely warm 25-28 degrees in summer. Although there are wet days and the occasional storm, Kefalonia often enjoys bright sunny winter days with temperatures around 13 degrees, so if you wrap up warm, you can enjoy the natural and peaceful beauty of the island. Mount Ainos, is a must visit. On a clear day, you can enjoy the fun in the snow at the top whilst enjoying the breath-taking views down to the beach with the sun glistening on the water.

So what are we up to over Christmas? Dennis and Dimitra snuck off for a little holiday, visiting Dubai and then onto a cruise to Thailand, returning back on Christmas Eve just on time to spend Christmas day in Argostoli with Dimitra's mother, and then on to Dennis’ parents for Boxing day in their home village of Agia Irini.

Andreas will be on the island spending the day with his mum, sister and her children in their home village. He promises to drink plenty of wine to help him have an afternoon sleep. If we know Andreas, he will keep his word!

As for us, Nico’s daughter Penny is getting married in Kefalonia in June next year followed by a bit of travelling and then emigrating to New Zealand with her new husband Glenn, so this will be her last Christmas in the UK. They will be coming to stay with us Christmas Eve so we can all open presents together in the morning, along with my daughter and her boyfriend. Penny and Glenn will then go off to spend some time with her brother Chris and sister Simone at her mums for Christmas lunch, while the rest of us go to my sisters. She only lives a mile away so we will stagger back home after eating and drinking loads. There we will regroup with Nico’s daughters for a few more drinks and some fun games.

So that just leaves me to say on behalf of all the crew on the LadyO, wherever you are and whatever you are doing, we hope you have a magical Christmas and New Year and we can’t wait to see you all again next year on one of our fun-filled cruises on the most beautiful island in the Mediterranean.
