Ford Shelby GT500 Coupe

With Ford now locked in a duel of the ages with Chevrolet as the Mustang and Camaro square off on the street, track and showrooms, Ford has a new answer to Chevy’s range-topping Camaro ZL1 – and it is the heavily updated Shelby GT500.

While GM selected a 6.2-liter supercharged LSA V8 for its range-topping Camaro ZL1, good for 580 horsepower and 556 lb-ft of torque, Ford has now answered with an all-new supercharged 5.8-liter V8 – which was initially expected to put out 650 ponies and 600 lb-ft of torque.

However, the SAE has certified the engine at 662 horsepower and 631 lb-ft of torque, officially making it the world's most powerful production V8. An impressive 395 lb-ft are available just off idle at 1,000rpm, making the GT500 an ideal burnout machine, and more 90 percent of the car’s torque is available in the 2,200 to 5,800 rpm range.

Don't think that the new V8 is a one-trick pony, either - rated at a respectable 15 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway, it's also the most efficient engine with over 550 horsepower in America according to Ford.

Shifting is handled exclusively by a six-speed manual transmission, which also features increased torque and rpm capacity thanks to its dual-clutch design.

To achieve such impressive power, Ford ditched the 5.4-liter V8 that has powered the range-topping Mustang for years, opting instead for an all-aluminum 5.8-liter V8. The SVT folk then added a new TVS series 2300 (2.3-liter) supercharger and a significantly upgraded cooling system that features a larger cooling fan, fan shroud with high-speed pressure-relief doors, an updated and more efficient air cooler, a higher-flow intercooler pump and a 36 percent bump to the intercooler heat exchanger’s capacity.

Packing all of that power into the Shelby’s updated body also results in a top speed that eclipses the 200 mile per hour barrier, although Ford hasn’t specified exactly where this snake stops. While we are sure the massive power boost played a big role in that new top speed, Ford says there has also been considerable aero work done to this new Pony.

How much work? For one, front fascia and splitter modifications allow for 33 percent more effective aero at 160mph compared to the outgoing model, and continue on to allow for the extreme aero loads experienced above 200mph.

New for the latest model year
The latest GT500 is full of new technology throughout, so much so in fact it might be a good idea to list out at least the bulk of changes in one place: new 5.8-liter aluminum-block engine, new 2.3-liter supercharger, six-piston Brembo front calipers, new and larger front and rear brake rotors, new brake pads, new downforce-generating front grilles, new and more aggressive front splitter, new quad exhaust system, (two) new forged-aluminum wheel designs, defeatable launch control system, new (optional) Performance Package featuring new SVT-designed Bilstein electronic adjustable dampers and Torsen limited-slip differential, with the additional Track Package adding an external engine oil cooler, rear differential cooler and transmission cooler and revised gearing in order to help better distribute the uprated power to the ground.

How does the GT500 manage its traction problem?
Of course, when dealing with over 600 horsepower, traction management becomes a serious concern, to which Ford answered with more than just new gearing. A new, defeatable launch control system has been developed that allows drivers unprecedented levels of control, allowing for specific rpm launch points to be chosen based on elevation, tire and street temperature and other variables. This system is fully unique to the SVT lineup in that it is incorporated into both the engine control and traction control systems.

There is also a Torsen limited-slip differential that comes with the optional Performance Package, something Ford says helps even further to deliver maximum power output to the ground. Rounding out the driving dynamic upgrades are tweaks to the AdvanceTrac system, which now features appropriately adjusted steering assist levels based on the changes to the car.

With all this power comes the need to slow this 3,850lb beast to a stop, to which Ford, Shelby and SVT answered with a new Brembo brake system that utilizes new six-piston calipers in the front, along with larger front and rear rotors. Ford says it also developed new brake pads which are even more performance-oriented, intended to performance better under high-speed heavy deceleration.

Also part of the stopping equation are wheels and tires, to which the latest Shelby GT500 offers two new sets of forged-aluminum wheels including a unique wheel for cars with the optional packages. The 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels are coupled with Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperCar G: 2 tires on all vehicle configurations.

The practically all-new Ford Shelby GT500 is built at AutoAlliance International Plant in Flat Rock, Michigan.

Tesla Roadster Sport

With production of its Roadster sports car well underway, Tesla Motors has added a more powerful variant to its line of electric two-seaters. Called the Roadster Sport, the EV delivers more peak torque than the base model, not to mention improved handling and unique paint job with carbon accents.

The Roadster Sport does zero-to-60 mph in 3.7 seconds -- compared to 3.9 seconds for the standard edition. This puts it in the same league as some very exotic -- and far more expensive -- sports cars.

This is achieved from a peak rating of 299 horsepower, which is actually a pinch lower than the Tesla Roadster base model's 302 horsepower rating. The difference comes from the re-tuning of the power delivery to increase torque from 273 lb-ft as found on the standard Roadster to 295 lb-ft, which results in .2 seconds off of the acceleration zero-to-60 time, with no discernible sacrifice to range (same as the standard model with 245 miles).

"This car can beat nearly anything in its price class - yet it is twice as efficient as compact hybrid sedans," said Michael van der Sande, Tesla's senior vice president of global sales, service and marketing. "If you refuse to compromise on performance or the environment, the Roadster Sport is your only option."

The Sport's electric motor comes with a hand-wound stator and increased winding density for lower resistance and higher peak torque. In addition to Yokohama A048 Ultra High Performance tires, the Roadster Sport has improved suspension with adjustable dampers and anti-roll bars that will be tuned to the driver's preference.

"The Roadster Sport embodies Tesla's spirit of continuous improvement," said CEO, Chairman and Product Architect Elon Musk. "The Roadster has been a great success, but no one at this company remains satisfied with the status."

What's inside?
The interior features a considerable amount of standard ammenities, such as heated seats, a three-spoke, leather-wrapped steering wheel, cruise control, power windows and locks, air conditioning and a vehicle information touch screen. Options include your choice of premium leather or microfiber seats, an executive leather package, or an executive leather and carbon fiber package. There is also an infotainment group which includes: large, in-dash touchscreen featuring GPS navigation, back-up camera, HD Radio, Sirius Satellite Radio, amplified 400 Watt 7-speaker sound system, Bluetooth connectivity and Homelink door opener.

The battery pack is warrantied for seven years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggera

The Superleggera is back, and it’s faster and lighter than ever before. This ultra high-performance variant builds upon the Gallardo line, which was first introduced in 2008. The car is a successor to the previous Gallardo Superleggera, which was produced in 2007 for less than a year.

This two-door coupe weighs just 2,954 lbs. It’s the fastest Gallardo road car yet, sprinting to 62 mph in just 3.4 seconds on its way to a 202 mph top speed.

The supercar has tweaked engine management software to squeeze another 10 horsepower from the standard Gallardo’s direct-injection V10. The 570 horsepower motor also gets a launch-control mode, with cranks the 90-degree, all-alloy V10 up to 5,000 rpm before bursting off the line and capable of hitting 124 mph in 10.2 seconds. Peak output comes at 8,000 rpm, while max torque of 398 lb-ft arrives at 6,500 rpm.

The Superleggera features the normal Gallardo's six-speed, robotized E-gear transmission as standard.

Many modifications were made in order to keep the car's curb weight to a minimum. Engineers switched the side glass, the rear glass and the engine cover to light-weight polycarbonate, while the rear hood made of carbon fiber. After recently cementing its carbon-fiber research alliance with the University of Washington’s Advanced Composite Structures Laboratory, the Superleggera also uses carbon fiber for the rear diffuser, underbody paneling, exterior mirror housings, door sills and the rear spoiler.

Lamborghini says it saved 88 lbs. by using carbon instead of plastics or metals. The automaker made widespread use of the material inside the cabin as well, including on the center console cover, door panels and seat shells.

Despite all the weight-saving measures, the Superleggera still has air conditioning and power windows as standard equipment.

The automaker saved another 28.6 lbs. by using forged alumina, 19-inch alloy wheels and took the theme to extremes with titanium wheel nuts.

The body changes are slight and mainly focused on aerodynamics, including the rear wing (there’s a larger version as an option), the rear diffuser, with four exhaust pipes running through it, and the remodeled front bumper. The new shape pushes more air into the radiators and also gives more down force over the front axle.

A set of super-sticky Pirelli PZero Corsa tires — 235/35 up front and 295/30s at the back — were developed specifically for the Superleggera.

While the standard Superleggera is brought to a halt by enormous eight-piston calipers and 365mm discs up front (with four-pistons at the back), there is a lightweight, carbon-ceramic option with six-piston front calipers as well.

Ferrari 458 Challenge

Ferrari first unveiled its latest creation – the 458 Challenge – at the Annual Dealer Meeting in Maranello. Based on the 458 Italia, the 458 Challenge will take part in the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli in the 2011 season.

Like its road-going counterpart, the 458 Challenge is powered by a 4497cc direct-injection V8 producing 570 horsepower at 9,000rpm. However, a number of changes have been made to prepare the 458 Challenge for its track duties.

In order to get the 458 Challenge race ready, Ferrari modified the car’s gear ratios and also optimized the calibrations of its dual-clutch F1 gearbox, allowing for higher torque at lower revs. The 458 Challenge also comes equipped with the standard 458’s E-Diff electronic differential, marking the first application in a track-only Ferrari.

Ferrari significantly revamped the 458 Challenge’s suspension for race use, including new solid aluminum bushings, stiffer springs, a 30mm lower ride height and single-rate dampers. The Challenge package also includes center-nut 19-inch wheels, larger diameter Pirelli racing slicks and the same Brembo braking system found on the 599XX.

The 458 Challenge is also much lighter than the 458 Italia, thanks to a thinner body shell and the extensive use of carbon fiber and Lexan.

All of the 458 Challenge’s added performance is kept in check via Ferrari’s F1-Trac traction control system. Developed in-house by Ferrari, the system ensures maximum road-holding in wet or dry conditions.

As a result of Ferrari’s efforts, the 458 Challenge can generate up to 1.6G of lateral grip, which helped the car to a record-setting 1 minute 16.5 second lap of the automaker’s Fiorano test track.

BMW X5 M

Like the X6 M, BMW's X5 M features a high-output V8 under its hood. But unlike the X6, this Autobahn cruiser has a decidedly traditional SUV shape.

BMW put the M through extreme durability testing in the southwestern part of the United States, taking advantage of the hot temperatures, miles of desert roadways, and mountains with steep grades in order to prove the worthiness of the M badge.

The X5 M offers the same utility as the regular X5, with the addition of a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 delivering 555 horsepower at 5,750 rpm and peak torque is 501 pound-feet, available between 1,500 and 5,650 rpm. The crossover can sprint from a standstill to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds, according to the automaker.

BMW is referring to the new 4.4-liter motor as its "M TwinPower Turbo" unit. The name reflects the fact that the motor features Twin Scroll Twin Turbo Technology and a common exhaust manifold encompassing both rows of cylinders.

The X5 M (and X6 M) are the first xDrive all-wheel-drive vehicles from BMW to sport the "M" badge. Coupled with special "M" air suspension featuring Adaptive Drive and the newly developed Servotronic power steering, the performance SAV promises very competent handling, despite it's serious heft.

Other high-tech features include launch control for maximum acceleration and an "M" six-speed automatic optimized for performance. Drivers can manually select gears using either paddles or an an electronic gear selector lever.

Electronically controlled, variable power distribution to the front and rear axle prevents even the slightest tendency to over -- or understeer right from the start, before DSC Dynamic Stability Control is even required to cut in.

Although traction control is standard, the M Dynamic Mode (MDM) greatly reduces the aggressiveness of the system. The MDM setting allows the driver to enter a controlled drift and push the vehicle's handling to the limit. There's also a DSC-Off Mode for drivers seeking a more purist experience.

Interior options are what would be expected from a true luxury maker such as BMW, and include an interior much more like BMW's 7-series sedans than a sport-utility. All materials are top quality, and the perforated upholstery is soft and comfortable. Second row seating is spacious, but the third-row seats are best left to the children. Climate and audio can be controlled independently, as well as by that iDrive single-knob computer-screen system (standard on both models) which has been the object of much criticism, but does make the navigation system easy to operate.

Also note that the iDrive system (4th generation) received substantial overhauling for the latest model year -- intended to improve user friendliness. The new iDrive system features new graphics, controls, improved menu structures, more functions and more intuitive function.

A lengthy list of options and features includes steering-linked headlamps, multi-adjustable front seats, satellite navigation, rear seat entertainment system, back-up camera, full-roof sunroof, heated and ventilated front seats, driver's seat massage, front and rear climate zones and more.

Subaru BRZ

The Subaru BRZ is a lightweight, rear-wheel-drive sports car that provides nimble handling and spirited performance at an affordable price. Co-developed with Toyota (which sells its own variant as the Scion FR-S), the BRZ was designed to buck the trend of increasingly heavy, technologically complex vehicles and instead provide a pure, driver-focused experience.

Weighing in at just 2,762 pounds for the manual transmission model, the BRZ is one of the lightest sports cars on the market – it undercuts the mass of the Porsche Caymon by 160 pounds and is around 800 pounds lighter than a V6-equipped Ford Mustang. The low weight pays off in the realm of fuel efficiency and, more importantly, handling.

the BRZ — which stands for “Boxer Rear-drive Zenith” — rides on a unique platform that shares little with other Subaru and Scion models. The rear-wheel-drive configuration allows the boxer engine to be mounted low down and close to the center of the car, allowing for a near 50/50 weight distribution as well as an extremely low center of gravity, which Subaru says is among the lowest of any production car at just 18.1 inches.

Design-wise, the BRZ features traditional sports car proportions with a long hood and a short rear deck. Only minor details, such a unique grille and distinct wheels and taillights, differentiate the BRZ from the mechanically identical Scion FR-S.

The two cars also share an interior, which is simple and performance-focused thanks to touches like well-bolstered seats and a central tachometer in the instrument panel. The rear seats are best used for short trips or carrying luggage, while the trunk provides 6.9 cubic feet of stowage space. With the seatback down, the cargo area can hold two standard golf bags. Those who enjoy slalom or track events can also fold the rear seatback and have room for four wheels, a helmet and basic supplies and still have room for the front passenger.

Subaru Engine, Toyota Technology
The BRZ utilizes a Subaru 2.0-liter boxer four-cylinder motor with a Toyota D-4S fuel injection system, which uniquely combines direct injection and port injection technology. A direct-type fuel-injection system, which sprays fuel directly into the combustion chambers rather than upstream into the ports, provides a cooling effect in the cylinders, enabling the use of a sky-high 12.5:1 compression ratio to extract maximum energy from the fuel. In light- and medium-load conditions, the system's port fuel injectors help produce precise combustion, increasing performance and efficiency.

The result of the joint effort between Subaru and Toyota is 200 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque, which may not sound like much in a time of 280-horsepower family sedans but is actually more than enough to move the lightweight BRZ with authority.

Shifting duties are handled by a standard six-speed manual transmission, which features a short-throw shifter and is aided and abetted by closely spaced pedals for easy heel-and-toe downshifts. City-dwellers and the clutch-averse can opt for a six-speed automatic, which features a Sport mode for quicker, firmer automatic shifts as well as paddle shifters for full manual control.

Unlike all other vehicles in the Subaru lineup, the BRZ will be rear-wheel drive only. A limited-slip differential comes standard with both transmissions.

Manual-equipped BRZ models are rated at 22 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway, while opting for the six-speed auto ups mileage to 25/34 mpg.

Trim Level Breakdown
The BRZ will be offered in two trim levels – Premium and Limited.

The BRZ Premium includes a generous helping of standard kit, including a navigation system, an eight-speaker sound system, aluminum pedal pads, a leather shift knob and handbrake, a tilt-telescope leather-wrapped steering wheel, HD Radio, Sirius satellite radio, a six-speed manual transmission, a Torsen limited-slip differential and 17-inch alloy wheels shod with 205/55/R17 all-season tires.

The upmarket BRZ Limited adds leather-Alcantara upholstery, heated front seats, a rear lip spoiler, foglights, keyless access and start, dual-zone automatic climate control, fog lights and slightly meatier 215/45R17 summer tires.

Porsche Panamera Turbo S

The Porsche Panamera Turbo S is the true king of the range in the Panamera family - unseating the Panamera as the range-topping model. To achieve that, Porsche upped the ante from the already massive 500 horsepower rating to an even more extreme 550 horsepower.

The addition of the Turbo S isn’t exactly surprising, given the sister 911-range already had a Turbo S model. In the Panamera Turbo S, the bi-turbo 4.8-liter V8 is good for a 550 horsepower and 555 lb-ft of torque. The 10 percent power bump over the 911 Turbo will surely help offset the added bulk of the four doors.

With the help of Launch Control, the newest Panamera can reach 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds. The top track speed is 190 mph.

Standard driving-dynamic control systems abound on the Panamera Turbo S, including Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC)- an active anti-roll system that significantly reduces lateral body movement during corning, which enhances stability, handling and overall occupant comfort. There is also Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus) which works to help ensure superior traction and higher-performance cornering by applying a variable torque split to the rear wheels in combination with an electronically controlled rear differential lock.

Also standard is Porsche’s advanced speed-sensitive Servotronic steering system, a sports exhaust system and the Sport Chrono Package Turbo that further tunes the engine and suspension at the touch of the “Sport Plus” button which adds 35 lb-ft of torque for a total of 590.

How did they do it?
Porsche says the power bumps are largely attributable to improved turbochargers with titanium-aluminum turbine wheels, as well as modified engine mapping in the computer. Porsche explains that the titanium-aluminum alloy reduces the weight of the compressor wheel in the turbo, and in turn reduces the energy required to spin the turbos, resulting in more airflow.

Of course Porsche didn’t just boost the power and call it a day, other features include new 20-inch Turbo II wheels with increased rear axle track width, side skirts from the Porsche Exclusive range and the adaptive extending four-way rear spoiler, painted to match the body.

Inside, Porsche applied a contrasting bi-color leather finish, standard. Porsche says that the new combination of black and cream is offered exclusively for the new Panamera Turbo S with agate grey/cream also being added as an exclusive combination.

The Panamera Turbo S comes equipped with eight airbags, including dual front, side-impact and curtain airbags. Knee airbags are integrated into the lower part of the instrument panel and hold back the lower body of the driver and front passenger in a head-on collision.

Tesla Model S

The all-electric Model S luxury sedan marks the first truly in-house vehicle to come from Tesla. The Roadster and Roadster Sport models shared shells with the Lotus Elise, whereas the Model S is wholly an in-house effort.

The Model S is a rather dramatically styled four-door sedan. A sloping roofline gives it the appearance of a four-door coupe while the rear looks to have been influenced by the Jaguar XF.

Designed by Franz von Holzhausen, the front end styling of the Model S will be the future face of the electric automaker. Short front and rear overhangs not only give the Model S a clean, sporting look, but also allow for the maximum interior volume. Large 19 or 21-inch wheels sit at all four corners, giving the Model S a truly planted look.

Inside, the Model S’ interior is highlighted by a 17-inch touch screen. The large screen controls all of the vehicle’s radio, navigation and HVAC functions and is also highly customizable. The Model S comes packed with 3G wireless internet and HD satellite radio.

In keeping with the Model S’ green theme, Tesla offers chrome-free vegetable tanned Italian leather on the interior, and 100 percent recycled PET carpeting from Futuris.

Tesla claims the Model S has "more room than station wagons," which seems to be proven by the sedan’s seating capacity for five adults, plus optional rear-facing seats for two small children in the cargo area.

But where the Model S really shines is in its performance. The electric sedan is offered with a range of up to 300 miles for the 85 kWh variant, and a QuickCharge system that takes only 45 minutes to top off the EV’s battery, given the correct electrical connection. For those looking for even faster fueling, the Model S’ battery can also be swapped out in just five minutes, making it compatible with Shai Agassi’s Better Place initiative.

The Model S’ door handles even retract for improved aerodynamics, proving Tesla really has an eye for efficiency. Despite its 3,825 lbs. curb weight and single-speed transmission, the Model S can make the sprint from zero-to-60 mph in 5.6 seconds if equipped with the Performance package.

The Model S’ stopping power is just as impressive as its acceleration, thanks to six-piston Brembos up front and four-pot calipers out back. The Model S can haul itself down from 60-to-zero mph in just 135 feet. All-wheel drive will become available down the line, giving the Model S even more sure-footedness.

Options and Trims
The Model S is available in three basic battery flavors – 40, 60 and 85 kWh - which give it a range of 160, 230 and 300 miles, respectively.

Performance enthusiasts will want to step up to the Model S Performance, which adds the 85 kWh batter, as well as a high performance drive inverter and carbon fiber exterior accents. Buyers can add a Nappa leather and Alcantara leather interior, an air suspension with sport-tuned traction control and unique 21-inch alloy wheels and tires.

Other options for all models include a glass panoramic roof, aerodynamic wheels, metallic paint, a Tech package with navigation, a backup camera, HID headlamps and a few other goodies and a 580-watt audio system.

Twin chargers and a high power wall unit allow for a faster charging process.

For those truly intent on making the most of their Model S experience, a range-topping Signature trim level adds a few appearance upgrades. A Signature Performance model is by far the most expensive Model S, but it is both the fastest and most exclusive. The Signature models are the first Model Ss to go on sale and are limited to just 1,000 examples.

Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe

The second-newest Rolls Royce, the Phantom Drophead Coupe, nevertheless sticks with tradition. For one, it uses rear-hinged suicide doors, and a 6.75-liter V12 to move its near 3-ton bulk around that harkens back to a time when fuel economy and emissions weren’t issues. The teak rear deck symbolizes the kind of old-world craftsmanship that isn’t found anywhere else in today’s automotive landscape.

The aluminum engine is good for lots of power, and features a Bugatti Veyron-like Power Reserve percentage dial. No all-wheel drive gadgetry here either, as power gets to the ground the old-fashioned way: through the rear wheels, and thanks to a six-speed automatic transmission. With 75 percent of its 531 lb-ft of torque available at 1,000 rpm --- that’s 398 lb-ft! -- it’s a good thing the convertible is fitted with electronic traction control.

Other technologies like direct injection, variable valve and camshaft timing mean this is a thoroughly modern engine, and the same one you’d find in the Phantom sedan. The numbers are 453 horsepower at 5,350 rpm and 531 lb-ft at 3,500 rpm, returning 5.7-second 0-60 mph sprints and an artificial top speed of 149 mph.

The engine gets its own battery to ensure it always fires up, while the on-board electronics and lights are powered by another one. Likewise, there are dual alternators, and both batteries are mounted under the trunk floor for better weight balance.

All that weight sits on an air suspension that can be raised at the touch of a button by an inch, but returns to its normal ride height past about 37 mph.

Another unique feature -- apart from the brushed aluminum hood -- is the split trunk-lid Rolls Royce calls a picnic boot. It allows the vertical lid to which the license plate mounts to swing down, much like a pick-up truck’s tailgate, while the horizontal lid is conventionally hinged.

Bespoke interiors
A Rolls-Royce simply wouldn't be a Rolls-Royce if it weren't for its extensive attention to detail in the interior - often due to bespoke customizations at the request of the buyer. For example, one can choose from a plain headrest, to having interlinked an Rolls-Royce monogram or Spirit of Ecstasy stitched into the headrests in any standard or contrast trim color, or go completely custom and have personal initials or symbols sewn into the headrests.

Other examples of luxury can be found in the 12 unique leather choices as standard, each pre-shrunk and dyed so ensure it is as supple as possible and resists cracking or fading. Should none of the 12 colors fit your style, one can of course make use of the Bespoke service and choose a custom color.

Then there are six standard wood veneers to choose from, including Piano Black, Mahogany Flare, Rosewood, Brown Oak, Elm Cluster or Ash Burr. None of those tickle your fancy? You got it, pick your own.

Lamborghini Aventador

The latest and greatest halo car for the Lamborghini brand - the Aventador - has arrived in style. This advanced new technical powerhouse comes packed with cutting-edge technology as well as an evolutionary look that seemingly blends the lines of the outgoing Murcielago and a modern stealth fighter jet.

As the name suggests, the Aventador boasts 700 horsepower and 509 lb-ft of torque at 5,500 rpm thanks to a naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V12.

Light…but not that light
The Aventador makes extensive use of carbon fiber in an attempt to keep weight down, but the big Lambo still checks in at over 4,000 pounds.

Part of the reason behind the weight is the standard use of a Haldex all-wheel drive system - a small tradeoff for the incredible acceleration and handling capabilities that result from the system's addition.

To help offset some of the added weight from AWD, among other technologies, Lamborghini developed a new Robotized Independent Shifting Rods (ISR) transmission that is said to have shaved weight compared to a dual-clutch gearbox, while also managing to blast from gear to gear in just 50 ms for all seven forward gears.

To help transfer all 700 horsepower to the ground at all four corners are two different tires and wheel sizes, 255/35/R19 for front wheels and tires, with massive 335/30R20 wheels and tires for the rear. Stopping this beastly Lamborghini are 400x38m six-piston carbon ceramic brakes in the front, and 380x38mm carbon ceramic brakes in the rear.

Standard tech is in
Standard features are quite extensive, including electronic control goodies such as ABS, EBD, ASR, ESC, a hill holder function, an electronically controlled rear spoiler, an electronically controlled side air intake system, servotronic and an integrated command with three different driving modes that integrate the gearbox, differential, engine response and servotronic simultaneously.

Interior and vehicle standard features include: Push to Start/Stop button, keyless ignition, full TFT displays in the cockpit, on-board computer, multimedia system with seven-inch display, iPod and USB interface, navigation, Bluetooth, bi-xenon headlights with washer, LED daytime running lights, automatic air conditioning with solar sensor, crepuscular and rain sensors and electrically adjustable and heated side mirrors with folding function.

Lamborghini also introduced a new suspension system uses pushrod technology, inspired by Formula 1 racing. It functions by locating the springs and dampers no on wheel mounts, but rather inboard to the body shell. The end result when coupled with the double wishbone suspension is precise handling in dynamic driving conditions, but almost luxury-like comfort when cruising.

Given the exotic nature of the Aventador, it is only fitting that Lamborghini decided to include a pair of new exterior colors: Metallic Grigio Estoque (a type of dark gray), and a pearl Arancio Argos orange. In addition to the two new colors, there will be three matte colors, including the white shown in Geneva, for a total of 13 exterior colors.

SRT Viper 2013

The fire-breathing Viper sports car is back for a fifth generation, although this time around it ditches the Dodge nameplate and is instead marketed as an SRT model. While it gains a more refined interior and a number of technology and safety features in order to appeal to a larger audience, the latest Viper still possesses the arresting styling, supercar performance and wild character of the original.

Under the hood is the hand-built, all-aluminum 8.4-liter V10 that Viper owners have come to know, love and fear in their SRT-powered snakes. In its latest form it delivers 640 horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque, giving it the most torque of any naturally aspirated production car engine in the world. Improvements to make those numbers possible include a new, ultra-high flow and lightweight composite intake manifold, high-strength forged pistons, sodium-filled exhaust valves, new catalysts to reduce back pressure and an aluminum flywheel that reduces reciprocating losses.

Despite all of the upgrades to the engine, SRT engineers actually managed to shed over 25 lbs of weight - just from the engine. In terms of the entire vehicle, roughly 100 lbs have been dropped, partially due to the all-new aluminum and carbon fiber body. Returning to the powertrain, the 8.4-liter V10 is mated to a Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual transmission with an improved short-throw shifter and final gear ratios that have been tightened from 3.07 to 3.55.

SRT stiffened the structure and chassis of the latest Viper by 50 percent, much of which was adapted from the previous GTS-R race cars. Some of that strength comes from a new aluminum "X" brace under the hood that connects the front suspension to the magnesium cowl super casting.

In the rear of the car, SRT's engineers developed a new setup that locates the toe link forward of the axle for better tow control and dynamic stability. Thanks to federal law changes, the latest Viper also comes standard with electronic stability control and traction control, both of which are fully defeatable for truly brave drivers. There is also a steering wheel-mounted launch control switch for optimal acceleration runs.

Power is transferred to the ground via Pirelli P Zero, Z-rated tires that SRT promises to deliver substantially improved overall performance, cold weather performance, enhanced overall grip and steering response. There is also an SRT Track Package that features P Zero Corsa tires, which are "soft"-tuned and more of a racing compound, intended to deliver optimal track performance at the expense of longevity.

Bringing this snake to a stop are four-piston Brembo brakes with fixed-aluminum calipers and 355mm vented rotors on all four corners. Opt for the Track Package and those brakes will be swapped out for lighter slotted two-piece rotors from StopTech.

More Luxurious Interior
Getting with the changing times, the latest Viper boasts a significantly more comfortable, stylized and attractive interior. But don't think SRT went too soft on the interior: they also made a point of creating a very driver-focused cockpit-style layout to help drivers extract the most out of their car with minimal distraction.

All major interior surfaces are sewn and wrapped with additional padding applied in comfort areas, while triple-paint-finished Gun Metal appliques can be found on the cluster bezel, HVAC outlets, window switch bezels, shifter base, park brake bezel and the integrated passenger grab handle on the center console.

Relaying vital information is a seven-inch, customizable instrument cluster display with a full-time analog tachometer readout in the center to confirm the performance driving feedback philosophy of the Viper. Drivers have a wide range of custom and personal options such as an additional digital speedometer readout just below the tachometer.

SRT Viper GTS
The SRT Viper GTS builds on the standard Viper model with more technologically advanced solutions, such as a two-mode active suspension, allowing for both extreme track performance and more friendly daily-driving comfort. The model also features new interior and exterior designs incorporating premium materials and new exterior surfaces with aerodynamically functional details.

Porsche Cayenne Turbo

Though purists scoffed when Porsche first released its Cayenne mid-size SUV, the luxury 'ute soon became one the of the German automaker's best-selling (and most profitable) models. Now in its second-generation, the Cayenne offers the handling, comfort, and family-friendly size that made the original a hit in a lighter package with greater power - especially in potent Turbo form.

Along with the range-topping Cayenne Turbo discussed herein, the SUV is also available as the V6-powered base Cayenne, the eight-cylinder Cayenne Sand the gas-electric Cayenne S Hybrid. New additions to the model lineup include the efficient-yet-torquey Cayenne Diesel and the sporty Cayenne GTS.

The exterior of the latest Cayenne follows in Porsche’s philosophy of evolutionary design, though it does feature a much sleeker appearance than the outgoing model thanks to more organic body lines.

With a redesigned interior packed with cues from the Panamera sedan, the Cayenne sports a long, sloping center console and a plethora of buttons and switches thanks to the lack of an iDrive-style control system. Thanks to the extra 1.6 inches in the wheelbase, cabin dimensions have grown from the old model. Rear-seats now enjoy 6.3 inches of fore-and-aft sliding, as well as an adjustable backrest.

Other interior features include Bluetooth, Bose surround sound and a Burmester high-end surround sound system.

The Cayenne range starts out in base Cayenne form, featuring a tame 300 horsepower 3.6-liter V6. One step up in the Cayenne S, packing the Panamera’s 400 horsepower 4.8-liter V8 engine. But for those seeking a blend of true performance and utility, the Cayenne Turbo sits atop the Cayenne hierarchy and it awaiting you with a 500 horsepower, 516 lb-ft of torque twin-turbocharged 4.8-liter V8.

The result? Sprinting from a dead stop to 60 miles per hour in a scant 4.4 seconds.

Although fuel economy has never been a strong suit for the Cayenne, Porsche has vastly improved fuel consumption across the range for the new generation. The Cayenne Turbo is 23 percent more fuel efficient than the model it replaces, and now achieves 15 mpg city, 22 highway.

Like all new Cayenne models, the Turbo also features Start/Stop technology, which shuts off the combustion engine while the vehicle is stopped.

From a handling standpoint, the latest Cayenne Turbo comes standard with the Porsche Active Suspension Management, or PASM, while the technology is only an option on other models.

PASM is an advanced suspension system that provides for infinite damper control for both the front and rear axles, and a choice of three settings: Comfort, Normal and Sport.

Also contributing to handling is a new active all-wheel drive system with an electronically controlled multiple-plate clutch. This new AWD system reduces weight, and it can also be paired (for the first time) with Porsche's Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus option.

Pagani Huayra

Pagani says that the Huayra was named after Aymara Huayra Tata, god of wind, and although the name seems impossible to pronounce at first glance, it just may be the most fitting name possible for a car dedicated so thoroughly to taming and conquering the wind.

There is no questioning the fact that Pagani ’s choice of styling is far from conventional, and to some off-putting, but there is also no question that the C9 is a purpose-built speed machine that aims to cut through the wind as quickly and efficiently as possible, even if that means it must boast a funny nose while doing so all the way up to 230 miles per hour.

Welcome style and design
Amongst the questionable design cues are also some much welcomed additions, such as bi-xenon headlamps and LED daytime running lamps. Out back, this Pagani features the tell-tale center-mounted quad exhaust tips and a carbon fiber rear fascia to help with aerodynamics. The exotic automaker also equipped the Huayra with two active flaps for the rear of the vehicle, intended to automatically adjust based on then-current speed and handling requirements.

Plenty of power
If the designers could have had their way without regard to aerodynamics, the Huayra we are seeing today would no doubt look different, but they didn’t, and as a result Pagani has revealed a supercar that can blast from a dead stop to 62 miles per hour in just 3.2 seconds.

That acceleration is made possible by an AMG-sourced 6.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V12 engine, which in this application cranks out an astonishing 700 horsepower, with 738 lb-ft of torque to go along with it.

Less is more
Power is transferred from the engine to the wheels thanks to a seven-speed sequential gearbox cross and a dual-disc clutch, dry, which shaved 70 kg of weight from the vehicle. In fact, the entire transmission weighs in at a scant 96 kg. Much of the suspension comes from the Zonda R, and as such, enjoys the benefits of having plenty of testing hours behind it.

Pagani made sure to strip as much weight as possible without compromising chassis strength, utilizing a carbon-titanium chassis and forged aluminum alloy suspension parts. The end result is an impressive total dry weight of under 3,000 lbs, distributed 56 percent to the rear, and 44 percent to the front.

Pagani also employed the use of unique Pirelli Pzero Rosso tires in order to withstand the immense acceleration and top speed well over 200 mph.

Some say its what is inside that counts
when it comes to the interior of high-performance cars, sometimes attention to detail is overlooked and the car is still good enough that it can be mostly overlooked – think Chevrolet Corvette . For Pagani and its new Huayra, that was certainly not the approach taken.

In fact, Pagani packed this exotic coupe with more luxury style and leather than most pure luxury sedans receive. The overall style inside seems to be remarkably similar to that of Spyker , which is to say it has a unique blend of industrial, aviation and ultra high-end luxury in terms of look and feel.

Koeningsegg Agera R

The latest and greatest supercar (hypercar?) to come from Swedish automaker Koeningsegg: the Agera R. The R expands upon the already impressive Koeningsegg Agera, taking things to an extreme level that can only be enjoyed with ample amounts of pavement and an absence of speeding limitations.

In case you didn't know, the Agera R is a range-topping marvel of engineering achievement: a supercar boasting as much as 1,099 horsepower depending on your fuel of choice.

The rest of the spec sheet is equally ludicrous, with maximum torque listed at 885 lb-ft at 4,100 rpm, and “over 737 lb-ft” from 2,700 to 6,170 rpm when drinking the same E85 ethanol needed to produce the max horsepower rating of 1,099 at 6,900 rpm. Switching to 98 octane unleaded will drop the Agera R’s output to "just" 940 horsepower.

Although the power figures are impressive enough, the two figures that are most likely to grab the attention of automotive enthusiasts in the days of 1,200 horsepower Bugatti's would be the Agera R’s scant weight of 2,932 lbs and its lateral g-force capability of 1.6g! To put the car in perspective, the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport tips the scales at 4,053 lbs, which likely explains why it tops out at 1.4g’s of lateral acceleration.

The Agera R can scoot from a stop to 60 in just 2.9 seconds, hit 124 mph in 7.5 seconds and achieve top speed of 245 mph – which falls short of the Super Sport’s top speed by about 22 mph. All of this performance comes from an aluminum 5.0-liter V8 which features four valves per cylinder, twin turbochargers and a seven-speed dual clutch gearbox.

Standard features include: dual airbags, a detachable and storable hardtop with glass roof, power windows, adaptive rear wing, adjustable pedals and steering column, Agera stitching, adjustable seats in rake and length, carbon ceramic brakes with Sport ABS, hydraulic lifting system, power steering, power brakes, extra four-point seatbelts for track use, Satellite-navigation, Intelligent LifePo4 battery, MP3 player, USB connection, climate control, digital warning and info system, G sensor, alarm, tire monitoring system, silver key, leather carpets, roof storage bag and a car cover.

Mitsubishi Eclipse

The Mitshubishi Eclipse Coupe received a complete redesign for 2006, giving it a more daring exterior and countless mechanical improvements. Two trim levels are offered -- the basic GS model, and the more powerful GT iteration. The 2012 model year will be the last for the Eclipse lineup, and Mitshubishi will offer an SE Special Edition to commemorate the sporty car's departure.

For the 2009 model year and beyond, the Eclipse got a minor freshening that instantly sets it apart from older models. Unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show in 2008, the front end mimics the Lancer Evolution with a blacked-out center section that includes part of the bumper, grille and lower intake, and is somewhat reminiscent of all of Audi's nose jobs. The rear fascia now looks less bulbous thanks to a black apron replacing its lower half, which was a one-piece unit on the preceding car.

The GS model's 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine is unchanged and teamed with a 5-speed manual transmission or an optional 4-speed automatic. It produces 162 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 162 pound-feet of torque at 4000 rpm.

The GT's 3.8-liter V6 gets a dual exhaust for 2009, and now produces 265 horsepower at 5750 rpm, and 262 pound-feet of peak torque at 4500 rpm, a bump of 2 for each. The motor is mated to a 5-speed automatic; the previously standard 6-speed manual has been discontinued. Both engines employ MIVEC variable valve timing to help optimize efficiency and power across the engine's powerband.

Both of the available automatic transmissions feature a Sportronic mode that gives the driver manual control over the gears.

The car's chassis is considerably stiffer than that of its predecessor, improving handling. Meanwhile, four-wheel independent suspension ensures the the ride is still comfortable. Four-wheel disc brakes are standard on all models, as are anti-lock brakes and electronic brake-force distribution.

Both GT and GS trim levels come standard with alloy wheels (17" on the GS, 18" on the GT), air conditioning, front- and side-impact airbags, anti-lock brakes, cruise control, engine immobilizer and keyless entry. All new Eclipses receive standard electronic brakeforce distribution for the ABS system as well.

The 2009 GT also gets stability control system along with larger rear disc brakes, HID headlights, and a new spoiler.

A 650-watt Rockford Fosgate premium audio system is optional. Leather seats, heated front seats, heated exterior mirrors, and temperature and compass displays are standard on the GT are available as options on the GS.

Other optional equipment includes a six-way power driver's seat, aluminum pedals and an automatic climate control system.

Aston Martin Virage Volante

The Aston Martin Virage Volante is a luxury convertible that splits the price and power difference between the brand's DB9 Volante and DBS Volante droptops, though all three share a chassis, engine and various other mechanical items. It takes a practiced eye to tell the differences between the Virage Volante and the aforementioned cars, but the subtle nuances are indeed there if you know where to look for them.

The Virage Volante is distinguished from the DB9 Volante and DBS Volante by unique front and rear fascias, the former of which is inspired by the One-77 flagship. New fender-mounted side strakes that include six LEDs for the turn signal repeaters, upswept rocker panels and an aluminum grille complete the visual differentiations.

The Virage Volante eschews the hardtop design that is very much in vogue, instead opting for a traditional softtop setup. What the configuration gives away in year-round usability it gains back in trunk space and weight savings over a hardtop design.

Aston Martin’s hand-crafted 5.9-liter V12 rests under the car’s elongated hood, where it puts out 490 horsepower and 420 lb-ft. of torque (20 horsepower less than the DBS, but 20 more than the DB9). In keeping with the Virage Volante’s relaxed nature, no manual transmission is available; a six-speed Touchtronic II automatic transmission is mounted on the transaxle for 50:50 weight distribution. 60 miles per hour arrives about 4.6 seconds after the driver summons full thrust.

To put the power to the ground, a new Adaptive Damping System offers ten settings split between normal and sport modes to offer drivers touring or performance-oriented driving. A dashboard-mounted Sport button further sharpens throttle response and speeds up gear changes in addition to holding gears closer to redline.

The Virage Volante comes standard with Carbon Ceramic Matrix (CCM) brakes. Powerful, resistant to fade and much lighter than conventional cast-iron discs, the CCM brakes reduce overall vehicle weight and the weight savings at each wheel also means that a better balance between ride comfort and handling can be struck.

Aston Martin says that 70 man hours go into making each interior. As drivers and passengers open the signature swan wing doors, they are greeted by the aroma of seven hides of the finest Bridge of Weir leather expertly hand stitched by craftsmen. Walnut fascia trim and an Iridium Silver centre console also provide a tactile sense of luxury. Unlike the DB9 and DBS, the Virage Volante gets a more intuitive navigation system with a 6.5-inch high resolution display. Previous models have relied on rather outdated software dating back to Aston Martin’s former Fordownership. Other standard equipment includes cruise control, Bluetooth telephone preparation and the powerful 700 watt Aston Martin Premium Audio System with Dolby Pro Logic II and full iPod integration.

The options list has few major items. For those who desire an aggressively powerful stereo, a 1000 watt Bang & Olufsen unit is available, and there are several different wheel designs and interior trim finishes to choose from

Aston Martin Rapide

The Aston Martin Rapide is a four-door ultra-luxury sedan that borrows styling elements and mechanical components from the brand's elegant DB9 Coupe. Though many of its rivals serve up more space for the rear passengers, the Rapide does offer enough room for four adults to go along with its exotic looks.

Like Aston's other models, the Rapide is built on the company's VH (Vertical/Horizontal) architecture -- the same that underpins the DB9. The Rapide also shares its twelve-cylinder powerplant from the DBS, DB9 and Vantage models.

Built by hand, the 6.0-liter V12 engine produces 470 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 443 pound-feet of peak torque at 5,000 rpm. A specifically tuned six-speed Touchtronic 2 automatic transmission allows the driver to change gears automatically or manually via the steering column-mounted magnesium paddles.

As one can see, the production version is very similar to the concept car, but does swap out quad-air intakes for upper and lower grilles. The rear of the car has strong family ties to other Aston Martin models, and sports 'smoked' rear taillights.

Continuing its series of firsts and oddities for the brand, the Rapide is the first ever Aston Martin built outside of the United Kingdom, thanks to a partnership up with Magna Steyr. Given a strong interest in the Rapide, Aston Martin says it will build between 1,000 and 2,000 units per year, up from an original estimate of 500 or less.

Thanks in part to the modest bump in power from the engine's previous applications, the four-door Rapide can sprint from zero-to-60 mph in under five seconds on its way to a top speed of 180 mph.

Luxurious, High-Tech Interior
Continuing the successful brand partnership between Bang & Olufsen and Aston Martin, the Rapide is fitted standard with the 1000 watt BeoSound Rapide - a bespoke sound system tailored specifically to the Rapide. It includes 15 speakers that have been optimally located throughout the cabin to deliver the audiophile-level sound quality.

Passengers and the Driver alike will enjoy a full grain leather interior, accented with walnut trim, an iridium silver finish for the outer center console, and a graphite inner center console finish. Screens consist of Organic Electroluminescent displays, along with LED map and ambient lighting. Standard features also include heated memory seats and Aston Martin's Adaptive Damping Sytem.

Options include cooled front and rear seats, a DVD entertainment system complete with a 6-disc player and two LCD screens, along with a myriad of interior finishes, such as: Eye Maple, Olive Ash Burl, Double Apex Alloy and matching wood door trim. Various other interior and exterior components can be customized as well, ranging from wheels, to brake caliper finish to Magnum silver rear lamp infills.

Jaguar XKR-S

Billed as Jaguar’s “most responsive, powerful, agile, and driver-focused production car,” the XKR-S is a serious performance machine. It builds on the “normal” XKR by adding more power, a revised and stiffened suspension and special styling touches inside and out.

The heart of the XKR-S, which is also available in drop-top XKR-S Convertible form. is its supercharged 5.0-liter V8. This twin-cam, direct injected unit makes 550 horsepower and 502 lb-ft of torque, levels that surpass even those of Jaguar’s XJ220 supercar from the early 1990s. Remapping the engine's fueling characteristics and increasing exhaust gas flow through the use of an active exhaust system helped liberate the extra ponies from the engine, which makes 510 horsepower in the XKR.

he motor hooks up to a quick-shifting six-speed automatic transmission that offers up smooth, rev-matched downshifts and helps the car return 15/22 mpg, which is just good enough to avoid the gas-guzzler tax. Jaguar quotes a zero-to-60 mph time of 4.2 seconds, though that figure is likely conservative by at least half a second, while top speed is electronically limited to 186 mph.

Helping to ensure that handling is up to the brutal straight-line quickness is a hardened suspension that features reworked aluminum front suspension knuckles, a revised rear geometry and stiffer springs and dampers. Jaguar also added lightweight forged alloy wheels, recalibrated the steering effort to minimize any response delays and hooked up a torque-vectoring rear differential to produce more agile and connected driving dynamics.

Realizing that the performance equation wouldn’t be complete without a potent braking system, Jaguar bestowed the XKR-S with cast iron and part aluminum monobloc calipers along with internally ventilated brake discs (measuring 380mm at the front and 376mm at the rear) that provide repeated, fade-free stopping power.

Signaling the sporting intentions of this fast cat to the world is a unique front end with twin nacelles, side intakes and a carbon-fiber splitter. Extended side sills emphasize the low ride height, while around back there’s a carbon fiber diffuser and a rear wing with carbon-fib centre section. Overall, the look is aggressive while still maintaining the Aston Martin-like elegance of the normal XK.

Inside, the cabin benefits from seriously bolstered front seats that hold occupants firmly in place during spirited maneuvers, which are affected by the use of a unique leather-wrapped, multi-function steering wheel. Other unique touches include ebony soft-feel paint for the switches and gloss black finish to the centre console, new carbon leather accents covering the seats and a special Dark Linear Aluminum finish is available as an alternative to the traditional Jaguar wood trim.

Befitting the car’s substantial price tag, a range of luxury features such as heated seats, a touch-screen navigation system and premium stereo are fitted as standard.

Safety features such as dual front, side and side-curtain airbags come standard, as do traction and stability control systems.

Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

The potent ZL1 Convertible is the high-performance variant of the reborn, retro-flavored Camaro Convertible. Also available in slightly more practical coupe form, the heavy drop-top balances aggressive looks and a 580 horsepower supercharged V8 with surprisingly good handling dynamics and ride quality thanks to GM’s trick Magnetic Ride Control system.

The ZL1 packs a more powerful version of the supercharged 6.2-liter LSA V8 commonly found under the hood of the Cadillac CTS-V. In the ZL1, the motor is good for 580 horsepower and 556 lb-ft of torque, beating out the 1969 ZL1’s 427 cubic inch V8 by more than 150 horsepower. Helping make those impressive power figures is a 1.9-liter Roots-style supercharger that crams air into the engine with a pair of four-lobe rotors and the aid of an intercooler.

Chevrolet specially modified the LSA engine specifically for the ZL1, with upgrades including a less restrictive air filter, dual inlet paths and improved airflow throughout the supercharger housing. Other changes include a more efficient intercooler and electric power steering system.

Specially designed transmissions were necessary to the stress of all that power. Chevy beefed up its Tremec TR-6060 to MG9-spec for ZL1 duty, which means the transmission can handle 30 percent more torque. This is achieved through the use of a strengthened output shaft, high-strength rear housing and additional roller bearing.

One unique feature of the ZL1 among high-performance muscle cars is the availability of an automatic transmission. While the notion of adding an automatic transmission may make some enthusiasts cringe, the reality is some consumers with pockets deep enough to purchase this car may very well prefer a six-speed automatic transmission over a do-it-yourself box.

The clutch-less option is a Hydra-Matic 6L90 six-speed automatic transmission, which benefits from two additional pinion gears, an additional clutch plate and strengthened output shaft and gearset. There are also three drive modes: Drive, Sport and Manual, depending on the driver’s preference at the time.

“Drive” is calibrated for optimal fuel economy, which even includes second-gear starts, along with smoother shifting points for comfort. This is for drivers simply looking to get from point A to point B without earning themselves a ticket or squandering $60 worth of premium fuel.

“Sport” is, as expected, a sport-minded setup that makes use of faster, tighter shift points and a tendency to hold gears longer for optimal power.

The final mode, “Manual,” takes away any automatic upshifts, adds staged upshifts when demanded and puts all focus on performance at the cost of comfort and economy. This is the mode for those lucky and bold enough to enjoy their ZL1 on the track.

Outside, the ZL1 boasts an aggressive body kit along with a unique “mohawk-style” hood, which features a functional air extractor and is made of a carbon fiber composite. The cabin is dressed up with a sueded microfiber-accented instrument panel and an available (and highly recommended) sueded microfiber wrap on the special flat-bottom steering wheel and shifter.

McLaren MP4-12C

After a 13-year hiatus from producing road-going cars, McLaren has returned to the streets with a highly advanced supercar aimed at doing battle with the best-of-the-best from historic competitors such as Ferrari and Lamborghini.

McLaren's first production car since 1998 with the end of the legendary F1, the MP4-12C is an entirely new beast aimed specifically at the Ferrari 458 and Lamborghini Gallardo. In fact, comparing the F1 and the MP4-12C side-by-side shows the familiar wedge shape of the legendary F1 on the new MP4-12C, as well as a few subtle design cues not all that different than those found on some of its Italian rivals.

ower comes from a 3.8-liter mid-mounted V8 delivering 592 horsepower and 443 lb-ft. of torque. The twin-turbocharged M838T motor is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission and can spin up to 8500 rpm. Of course, the torquey motor achieves 80 percent of its peak twisting power below 2,000 revs, so flirting with the redline can be saved for special occasions.

The run form 0-60 takes 3.3 seconds, or just 3.1 seconds with the MP4-12C’s optional Corsa tires. The 1/4 mile flashes by in 10.9 seconds at 134mph.

The new gearbox is a particularly interesting highlight. Known as SSG (Seamless Shift Gearbox), the unit features an industry-first dubbed Pre-Cog (short for pre-cognition). The system enables the driver to half-press one of the shift paddles in order to preselect the next gear ahead of a downshift or upshift. This dramatically shortens shift time, the automaker promises.

The MP4-12C’s main structure is composed of carbon fiber, resulting in an extraordinarily low curb weight of 3,000 pounds. Amazingly, the floor structure of the passenger compartment — an integral part of the chassis — is crafted as a single unit and weighs just 176 pounds. The body panels are also light, made of aluminum and SMC plastic.

What's up with the name?
Despite what you might think, it’s not an attempt to upstage Japanese cell phone makers. Rather, the numbers and letters do have a pretty understandable meaning. MP4 has been the chassis designation for all McLaren Formula 1 cars since 1981, while the "12" is a reference to the top echelon of McLaren’s internal rating system.

Finally, the C is believed either to be a reference to the car’s carbon fiber construction or its coupe body style. Rumor has it the roadster variant will be named MP4-12, so we are inclined to think the latter explanation is correct.

McLaren says it will build 1,000 examples of the MP4-12C in the first year of production. While 1,000 may seem like a low volume, keep in mind that by comparison the F1 only saw 100 models produced in its entire six model year existence.

Ferrari FF

Ferrari's shooting brake FF has garnered a fair bit of attention for its unconventional styling and its addition of all-wheel drive to the prancing horse brand. The unique four-seat model shows that Italy's most renowned sportscar manufacturer can do more than build coupes and convertibles.

With the introduction of the FF, Ferrari appears to be taking an entirely new direction, likely forced by the addition of the Porsche Panamera and the Aston Martin Rapide, except Ferrari decided to tackle the four-seater (with actual room for four) question a bit differently.

or starters, the FF still retains the two-door layout, unlike the Rapide and Panamera which adopted four full doors and a more generous rear seating area than the shooting brake FF. But, the Ferrari seems to have been developed with an entirely new approach in mind – on and off road style driving in snow and rain, thanks to the first-ever application of all-wheel drive in a production Ferrari.

The FF nomenclature derives from “Ferrari Four-seater,” meaning that this shooting brake has plenty of room for extra passengers and their cargo. Its long roofline hides a nearly 16 cubic foot cargo area that can be extended to more than 28 cubic feet with the second row of seats tumbled away.

The FF debuts Ferrari’s new 4RM all-wheel-drive system, which weighs in at about half that of a conventional all-wheel-drive system used in rivals bearing the Lamborghini and Porsche badges. Ferrari says that the FF tips the scales at under 4,000 lbs., meaning that even though it puts power to all four wheels and features an elongated roofline, it weighs around 100 lbs. less than the 612.

The light weight system helps keep weight distribution at 47/53 between the front and rear axles.

Ferrari says that the FF is powered by a 6.3-liter V12 that cranks out 651 horsepower at 8,000 rpm and 504 lb-ft. of torque at 6,000 rpm. Top speed is 208 mph and the automaker says that the FF sprints to 62 mph in just 3.7 seconds, representing a roughly 0.3 second increase over the outgoing 612.

Helping to keep things green, the automaker’s HELE start/stop system makes an appearance. Fuel consumption is down to around 15.5 mpg combined and emissions are curbed at 360 g/km – impressive figures for a Ferrari.

Nissan GT-R

The Nissan GT-R is something of a giant killer, a sports car that offers six-figure performance for a five-digit price. Packed with electronic handling and launch control aids, the GT-R is able to use advanced technology to overcome its substantial curb weight and offer agile responses along with truly breathtaking acceleration figures.

Originally introduced in America in 2008, the last few model years have seen the GT-R receive a host of power, handling and aesthetic upgrades. The biggest news for the latest iteration is an even more potent engine. Better air intake efficiency, reduced airflow resistance and improved exhaust emissions efficiency have allowed Nissan to wring an additional 15 horsepower and 15 lb-ft from the GT-R's 3.8-liter twin-turbo V6 for totals of 545 ponies and 463 lb-ft of twist. All that power coupled with the GT-R's all-wheel-drive system allows the car to sprint from zero-to-60 mph in under 3 seconds..

The GT-R is already widely considered as one of the best handling vehicles on the market, and the latest version only promises to build on that reputation. Engineers managed to further reinforce the GT-R’s body structure for the latest model year, which Nissan says delivers more responsive handling. The revisions come on top of a host of recent changes including an entirely reworked suspension complete with new spring rates and dampers, revised geometry and a new leverage ratio. These changes helped to improve the efficiency of both the shock absorbers and the stabilizer, giving the GT-R an overall more confident driving feel.

Other recent handling improvements include strengthened strut towers with carbon and aluminum materials for improved joint stiffness and a reinforced dashboard.

Bugatti Veyron 16.4

The Bugatti Veyron is, by every measure, the world's most extreme production road car. It's the quickest to 60, has the highest top speed, and can absolutely dominate a track.

The original Veyron claimed 1,001 horsepower, which in itself was a major technical achievement. Its engine, boasting 16 cylinders, was essentially formed by joining two V8 engines at the crank.

The W16 powerplant displaces 8.0-liters and features ten radiators for everything from the engine cooling systems to the air conditioner.

The standard Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Coupe ran a cool $1.3 million and could reach a top speed of 253 mph - a speed it can maintain for 12 minutes before all the fuel is gone. Power is transmitted to the pavement via four-wheel-drive and a seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission.

The car could hit 60 mph in just 2.5 seconds, 100 mph in 5.5 seconds, and 150 mph in 9.8 seconds. Getting to 200 mph took 18.3 seconds, and 250 mph takes 42.3 seconds.

A special key is required to "unlock" the Veyron's top speed of 250+ mph. The car is then lowered to just 3.5 inches from the ground. A hydraulic spoiler extends at speed, and it can also serve as an air brake.

The Veyron weighs a hulking 4,160 lbs, but even its harshest critics admit its handling is surprisingly sharp. Gordon Murray, designer of the McLaren F1 was very skeptical of the Veyron during its development, but after driving the finished car, he conceded it is a "huge achievement."

Top Gear's Jeremy Clarkson also publicly stated the Veyron was ridiculous and would never be built, only to call it "best car ever made" after he drove it. He famously characterized it as "utterly, stunningly, mind blowingly, jaw droppingly brilliant."

Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse is born
Bugatti has ceased production of the original coupe version of the Veyron, but continues to churn out limited edition open-air Veyron models. The latest such example, the Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse, boasts an enormous 1,200 horsepower and 1,106 lb-ft of torque.

Bugatti managed to bump the Vitesse to 1,200 horsepower by fitting the convertible with four enlarged turbochargers and intercoolers. Due to the car’s open roof, additional chassis supports had to be added to the Vitesse to handle the added power, so the car’s top speed will likely fall just short of the Super Sport’s 267 mph top end.

Maybach 62S Landaulet

Rear passengers can control specific audio and video systems using a remote control.

The driver can also control the communication systems by voice, keeping both hands on the steering wheel for safety. A state-of-the-art, fiber optic network is the backbone of all multimedia components and offers precise, high-speed communication among these components. A lifetime subscription to SIRIUS Satellite Radio is included with every Maybach.

The rear cabin audiovisual system with DVD player, single-feed 6-disc CD changer, auxiliary inputs, remote control and dual 9.5-inch video monitors (one on face of each side of divider) offers the potential for hours of uninterrupted in-vehicle entertainment.

True to the tradition of exclusive Landaulets, the roof of the car can be opened fully at the rear, while the driver's compartment remains completely enclosed from the driver. The passengers are then able to enjoy the sky above. For the latest model year, the time needed to open or close the roof has been reduced to just 16 seconds.

Other new features for the latest model year include Antigua white paint, 20-inch wheels painted in white with high-sheen spokes, and white indicators (front) and rear light clusters in dark red. Updates also include an optional 19-inch cinema screen mounted to the partition wall and individualized designs available for placement on the partition glass.

Since Maybach engineers have removed the rear roof module in order to afford passengers an unobstructed view of the sky, the side walls have been reinforced with an integral tubular steel structure. As these measures have not altered the silhouette of the luxury saloon, the complete interior with its reclining seats remain unchanged.

In order to offer the utmost comfort, both the front and rear seats in the Maybach are heated. The shoulder belts automatically adjust to the height of the driver or passenger, which helps to enhance their protective capability.

The seats are upholstered in Grand Nappa leather and feature multi-contour seatbacks with dynamic lumbar supports. All the seats are electrically adjustable for fore/aft, height, seatback and cushion angle, cushion length and head restraint height.

The Maybach Landaulet exclusively offers extending and reclining rear seats fit for a private jet. Additionally, the Maybach Landaulet offers as standard equipment removable pillows in Alcantara for rear seat head restraint. To protect from the sun and guard from the gazes of strangers, the Maybach features rear high-grade fabric window curtains that can be operated from all four seats (electrically-operated curtains for the rear side windows are optional).

When closed the black soft-top of the Landaulet rests on the frame formed by the roof bows, and is wind and weather-proof. When requested by the passengers, the driver operates a switch in the center console.

The roof opens electro-hydraulically and is stored on the parcel shelf in the rear. Opening and closing the roof takes 16 seconds. The chauffeur is able to enclose the folded roof with a fitted leather cover, which both conceals the roof mechanism from view

The Maybach Landaulet study is powered by the uprated V12 engine that Maybach engineers developed for the Maybach 57 S and Maybach 62 S. Thanks to twin turbochargers and water intercooling, the V12 develops a maximum output of 620 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque.

Instead of the traditional mechanical/hydraulic brake system, the Maybach is equipped with an electrohydraulic system known as Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC). This system has two central control units - a design feature which has significant advantages with regard to the division of the brake circuits.

The key benefit of this system is that it is able to modulate the brake pressure required for each individual wheel with greater precision and deliver it more quickly than a traditional system. This means that this advanced brake system can respond more appropriately to the driving situation to provide the optimum braking effect.

Sensotronic Brake Control also enhances the operation of important safety-related dynamic handling systems such as the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and ABS/BAS, which for instance sense the onset of skidding and automatically intervene to stabilize the vehicle. BC also helps to make braking smoother.

Fisker Karma

Vaporware no more! The Fisker Karma is finally, truly on-sale. The Karma is the first vehicle from the Fisker brand, arriving as a coupe-like four-door sedan boasting a range-extending gas engine and an electric motor in a configuration not unlike that found in the Chevrolet Volt.

Karma was officially awarded a 52 MPGe rating from the EPA, falling short of projections. When driving the vehicle beyond stored electricity levels, the Karma's 2.0-liter General Motors-sourced Ecotec engine (acting as a generator) returns just 20 miles per gallon. Should the Karma come with a full charge, however, expect to travel 32 miles without using a single drop of gas, according to the EPA.

Q-Drive is the heart of the Karma, a plug-in hybrid powertrain that uses a 20 kW/h lithium ion battery with Nanophosphate technology paired with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with direct injection and turbocharging, which powers a 175kW generator.

The net result is a very respectable 403 horsepower coupled with a jaw dropping 951 lb-ft of torque – available at zero rpms! This translates to a zero-to-60 time of 7.9 seconds and a 95 mile per hour top speed – in electric-only “Stealth Mode.”

Not impressed? Don’t worry, Sport Mode can be activated and the Ecotec kicks in to boost performance, recording a zero-to-60 sprint in 5.9 seconds and bumping the top speed to 125 mph. This unprecedented level of driver control enables conversation of either electricity or gasoline, depending on driver needs and preferences.

Recharging the battery can be done with either 110-, 220- or 240-volt plugs, taking as little as six hours to provide 32 miles of pure-electric range.

Other advanced technology employed by the Karma includes the world’s largest spherically curved, monolithic solar panel integrated into its roof – an industry first and a standard feature on all Karma sedans. Fisker says the panel will allow for up to five additional electric-only miles of driving per week.

Inside, the Karma is filled with natural and recyclable materials that continue the thorough “eco” approach to the car’s design. There are multiple trim levels that will determine the types of materials used, including the EcoChic trim level which uses an advanced sustainable animal-free approach that replaces leather with a high-grade textile and EcoPremium Suede trim. Certified Rescued Wood trim is sourced from Walnut Burl and Red Elm trees reclaimed from forest fires in the hills of southern California – providing both beauty and form in an environmentally conscious manner.

Information is displayed on one of several LCD screens, used both to replace traditional gauges and with a 10.2-inch Fisker Command Center, located in the center console. This command center controls climate, audio, navigation, telephone, as well as other various vehicle systems. Inputs into the center are met with instantaneous tactile feedback that enables drivers to confirm their commands without looking away from the road.

The Karma’s styling is modestly tweaked from the concept car the automaker first showed the world, and the interior is considerably better finished. Every surface is covered in hides with a rubbery finish – good for cornering, bad for entry/exit. Fisker showed the Karma with two sets of golf clubs in the trunk, further illustrating its no-compromise intent.

The Karma features speakers — both inside and out — that simulate a sound "like something between a Formula One car and a jet plane." The feature is being implemented for pedestrian safety and added novelty.
