Light can define space, substance and style. Outdoors, with the shifting sun and atmospheric conditions, light and the shadows change the appearance of things natural and man made. But in the indoors, the play of natural and artificial lighting largely determine both function and decoration.

Today lighting is considered to be a very important element of decorating scheme. The invention of the incandescent bulb in 1978 revolutionized lighting systems as it allowed light to be easily manipulated. Apart from exploiting natural light by using opaque or transparent glass walls, sky lights, large windows etc. for offices, architect work out the detailed light fittings which are conducive for a work environment. In homes, a careful selection of lights extends and enhances the aesthetics of interiors. Similarly for hotels, showrooms, museums, gardens, water bodies, individual lighting requirements are worked out. Artificial light falling from various angles and heights on different surfaces guide us to perceive various features and dimensions while creating a specific mood. With technological developments and the stress on precision lighting, a variety of lighting fixtures are readily available with options which offer manifold possibilities in terms of effect.

The choice of fitting according to the room , gets very difficult , one gets puzzled off as there are so many varieties in lights like the table lamps , spot lights , clamp lights , recessed / surface mounted lights , up lighters , halogens , incandescent bulb , pendants , fluorescent fixtures and lots of others. Once the basic idea of the space, mood, interior design, highlighting, function of work have been specified, one can then consider the basic types of lighting. Initially only the planned positions of lights need to be decided. Later, the selection of bulbs and the exact effect can be created. One should always keep in mind some of the basic rules while designing the light.

*Every activity that takes place in the interior must have lights of the right kind, intensity and the right direction.
*The eye prefers even lighting with the minimum of contrast between the brightness of the room surfaces and the lighting fixtures.
*The eye works best when the work surface is more brightly lit then the surroundings.
*The eye is stimulated by the contrast of tone and sparkle.
*When room lighting change, color changes or disappear,thus objects become more or less important in the room.
*There are three basic types of lighting which are categorized according to the intensity of the light used.

General lighting
It supplies an overall illumination in the area.

Task lighting

It supplies the required illumination for specific tasks such as reading, painting etc. It directs strong local illumination without high general illumination as required for activities carried in a particular area.

Accent lighting
It offers a decorative element to the area by highlighting the particular objects or features in the area. They are auxiliary to the general lighting and provide an added, and at times, dramatic dimensions to the scheme.

Spaces can be provided with one, two or all types of these lightings, depending upon the requirement. With different types of lighting in each room and dimmers to adjust the intensity of light, an ordinary space can be infused with much dramatic look to convey different moods to suit different times of the day.

LIVING ROOM lighting

*Establish an adequate general illumination level to reduce the accent light, brightness, contrast.
*Illuminate an entire wall with overhead fixtures to provide background for room furnishings.
*Feature window areas with the cosmic lighting.
*Indirect light like that under a pelmet or above a cabinet will supply soft uniform illumination.

*Use dimmers to program lighting moods.
*Play up with the architectural features like ala, niches, mantles etc.
*Highlight artwork and plants with individual lighting arrangements.
*Be sure that the floor, table and hanging fixtures have adequate shades to prevent glare.
*Plan adequate lighting to handle a variety of family activities like rack for display.
*Bar area could use incandescent light to play up sparkling glassware. Lighted shelves or fluorescent fixtures under the front edge of bar are effective.

Dining Room Lighting

The decor of dining room depends upon the culture of the family. A dining room can change the style of eating. So one should be careful while playing with the lights to make the environment relax and easy.
*One must keep the visual emphasis off the ceiling and walls and on the decor of food and guests.
*Ceiling down lights should fall and focus primarily on dining room table surface.
*Candles and fuel lamps in decorative holders can add special touch to any meal.
Buffet or service areas and chinaware/silverware/crockery displays deserve special lighting emphasis.

Kitchen Lighting

Kitchen is a place where a lady spends her maximum time so it should have comfortable and fresh feeling. Today's kitchens are far removed from the dark dingy spaces one saw earlier.

*General lighting for a kitchen should be well distributed, uniform and as shadow less as possible.
*Fluorescent fixtures reduce the energy demands without sacrificing illumination.
*Even if there is window in the kitchen, install down lighting over a sink for cloudy days or nights.
*Special lighting for key work areas can be installed in the ceiling or in the upper cabinets.
*Provide light for storage areas in pantry or wall cabinets overhead or shelf mounted brackets will do the job.

Bathroom Lighting

Planning and designing is a tedious job. Today's bathroom wears a well dressed look, its design recognizing people's needs to begin and end their day in pleasant surroundings. It is after all an intimate personal place- perhaps the only room in the house where one can be totally private and get much needed peace.

*For a relatively small room, the bath area can use a no. of different types of lighting.
*General lighting is essential in a compact bath, a central ceiling may suffice.
*Medium size and large size baths and especially those with sectioned areas for tub, shower and toilet will require several overhead fixtures.
*The lights are general, recessed into the ceilings or those over a tub or a shower must be watertight and vapour proof. A minimum of 100W incandescent or 60W fluorescent lamp is sufficient.
*The most critical lighting in a bath centers on the mirror area, this is the basic for good grooming. For shaving, make up applications hair care, light should be soft and diffused without glare or shadow.
*Avoid lighting the mirror itself rather light of the person looking into the mirror. The most efficient to light up a person's face is to use three fixtures, one on either side of the mirror or one overhead. Side fixtures should be mounted 30" - 36" apart on the wall and install about 60" above the floor.
*Incandescent fixtures should have a minimum of 75W bulb and fluorescent tubes on either side of 20W and one tube of 30W or two tubes of 15W overhead. Additional bath lighting for specific purposes may include plant lights to take the advantage of bath humidity for growing the flowers and ferns.

Reading Room Lighting

The study is the most important room for the intellectuals, for students as this is the room where one builds his career. In the reading room, one should plan the lights very carefully as the intensity affects a lot on the eyes thus on the health.

*In a study, the priority is to provide adequate illumination for reading and writing. For maximum pleasure of reading and for easier concentration, reading lamps must have a proper quality and quantity of illumination and be placed so that the light falls comfortably on the open page.
*The complete room may be lit with powerful up lighters, down lighters, or the general lighting may be reduced to be supplemented with task lights as required. For the study it is necessary that task lights be supported with general illumination even if it is of low intensity to avoid eye strain.
*Care should be taken where computers are placed; the task light should not produce glare or reflections on the screen. Task lights for writing should be positioned so as to avoid both glare and shadow.
*If floor lamps are used as reading lights, then it should be 40"-49" from the floor to the bottom edge of the shade. The shade should be moderately illuminous to softly diffuse the light and eliminate glare, thus open top shades are preferred.

Swimming Pool Lighting

Water presents a challenging and rewarding medium for lighting. Swimming pools, fountains, waterfalls magically come to life with lighting effects at night.

*For effective swimming pool lighting, the lights are generally set below the water level, into the sides of the pool.
*This should be done while the construction of the pool so as to keep the wiring away from water.
*The lights should be placed to shimmer down the deep end of the pool.
*Fountains are effectively lit by submerged narrow beam sources set near the base of each jet or falling on the flowing water casting a color and sparkle on it. Waterfall comes to life when lit from behind.

Family-focused kitchen (8-12)

You need a gathering space that your family can be comfortable in, one fit for the kids to play in and you to be in as well as for cooking and eating. When selecting your products, look for functional materials that can stand up to a little wear and tear: easy-to-grasp pulls; durable quartz or solid surfacing; vinyl or laminate flooring; darker wood cabinets that hide smudges better.

When it comes to design, consider incorporating a lowered countertop surface that puts dinner preparation and cookie making in the reach of the little ones. Include a base cabinet earmarked for coloring and play materials. If you're including an island, make sure extra-high bar stools aren't part of the equation—they're easy to topple off of. Placing your cooktop there also deserves special consideration—you need to make sure it's well out of reach. Lastly, have a little fun: bright colors and plenty of windows ensure that the room will be a place the family will want to gather in.

Cook's kitchen (13-20)

You're most comfortable with a whisk in one hand and a spatula in the other, and your kitchen should be a space that lets you get to work. When choosing products, function should be foremost in your mind: bakers will want to install a marble countertop area for rolling dough; a butcher's block section works equally well for chopping. The interiors of your cabinets are even more important that the exteriors: make sure you include plenty of tray, pots and pans, and pantry storage. Consider two sinks—a large single basin for washing and a smaller prep sink. You appliance purchase demands much consideration; be sure to consider how many BTUs you want your burners to crank out, how many zones you'd like your refrigerator to have, and what capacity dishwasher you need to handle your mess.

Serious cooks will also want to consider small luxuries like refrigerator and warming drawers to keep frequently used ingredients on hand and the final dishes warm before dinner begins. Consider including an appliance garage or pop-up mixer stand in your design to keep some of your counter appliances out of sight.

Entertainer's kitchen (21-28)

Life's a party, and you like to be the one throwing it, from casual dinners with the neighbors to festive holiday events. You want a kitchen stylish enough to show off to guests, but comfortable enough to stand in while munching on spinach dip. When selecting products, consider great-for-entertaining appliances like warming drawers (for keeping those appetizers warm), refrigerator drawers or wine refrigerators (for keeping soda and wine chilled) and icemakers (no frantic rush to the corner store for another bag).

Design-wise, you'll want to make sure there is plenty of roomy gathering space. Two-tier islands, with an upper level that can serve as a buffet space, are a wise choice.

Showpiece kitchen (29-32)

You may not be one for cooking, but you want a kitchen that looks like it could whip up a gourmet feast for 12 and looks magazine-ready—in short, a kitchen that impresses. Still a well-equipped workspace, this formal entertaining space suits chefs who trade cookie baking for elaborate—or even catered—dinners. Product-wise, opt for heavy, impressive cabinetry, like cherry Old World cabinets or ultra-modern stainless steel.

Because there's not a daily risk of spills, consider including Oriental rugs or artwork to ornament the space. Wine refrigerators and professional appliances give the space rich finesse, as do granite countertops. Design-wise, oversize cabinets and large islands will emphasize your room's grandeur.

Below is a step-by-step guide for drawing and measuring your kitchen. Each step is color-coded and matches the corresponding color in the sample drawing below.

NOTE: If you are remodeling, do not include in your measurements current cabinetry or other furniture that will not be kept, such as kitchen tables.

NOTE: All of your measurements should be in inches. For example, if you measure a wall that is 10 feet, write it as 120".

STEP 1

Draw a rough outline of your kitchen. Use the following symbols in your drawing for doors and windows.

NOTE: For doorways with doors, draw the doorway according to which way the door swings.

STEP 2

Draw in any obstructions, such as radiators, pipes, sink plumbing, etc., that you either cannot move or do not want to move.

STEP 3

A) Beginning at the top left corner of your drawing measure to the first window, door, or wall. Continue clockwise around the room until each wall, window and door has been measured.

Note: When measuring doors and windows the trim is considered part of the door or window. As shown in the drawing below, measure from the outside of the trim on one side to the outside of the trim on the other side.

B) Measure the ceiling height and write it in the center of your drawing. Sometimes, especially with older homes, it is a good idea to take measurements in a few different areas of the kitchen. Ceiling heights, even in the same room, can sometimes vary by as much as a few inches.

C) As shown in the drawing below, measure from the floor to the bottom of each window and also measure the overall window height. If you have printed these instructions, write the measurements in the table provided below.

STEP 4

A) Beginning at the top left of your drawing, label the windows "Window #1", "Window #2", etc. in a clockwise order.

B) Again, beginning at the top left of your drawing, label the doors "Door #1", "Door #2", etc. in a clockwise order.

C) Next to each wall, write the name of the adjacent room. If the wall is an "outside wall" write "exterior wall."

STEP 5

A) Measure any obstructions such as radiators, pipes, etc. that you either can not, or do not, want moved. If the obstruction is close to a wall, measure out from the wall to the edge of the obstruction.

B) Measure from the second closest wall to the edge of the obstruction.

C) If the obstruction does not span the full height of the room, measure the height of the obstruction.

FINAL STEP

Check your measurements. If your room is rectangular add up the measurements of the parallel walls and make sure they match (or are at least very close). For example, in our sample drawing, you would take the overall measurements of the top wall and add them together. Then do the same with the bottom wall. Once you have added each walls measurements check the totals to see if they match.

Planning Guidelines

No one wants a brand-new kitchen with appliance doors that bump into cabinet doors, or an island so close to the wall that it can’t be used for dining. Good space planning will help you develop the best layout for your kitchen, so take the time to read this condensed version of the NKBA guidelines. (The full guidelines are available on the NKBA site.)

Designed to maximize safety and functionality in home kitchens, the guidelines represent ideal layout solutions to kitchen concerns from storage space to door clearance. Don’t fret if budget limitations and the constraints of an existing kitchen require some compromises and tradeoffs: The only rules you must follow are building codes.

1) Door/Entry: A doorway should be at least 32 inches wide.

2) Door Interference: No entry door should interfere with appliances, nor should appliance doors interfere with one another.

3) Distance Between Work Centers: In a kitchen with three work centers*, the sum of the distances between them should total no more than 26 feet. No leg of the work triangle should measure less than 4 feet nor more than 9 feet. When the kitchen includes additional work centers, each additional distance should measure no less than 4 feet nor more than 9 feet. No work triangle leg should intersect an island or peninsula by more than 12 inches.

* The distances between the three primary work centers (cooking, cleanup/prep and refrigeration) form a work triangle.

4) Separating Work Centers: A full-height, full-depth, tall obstacle [i.e. a pantry cabinet or refrigerator] should not separate two primary work centers.

5) Work Triangle Traffic: No major traffic patterns should cross through the work triangle.

6) Work Aisle: The width of a work aisle should be at least 42 inches for one cook and at least 48 inches for multiple cooks.

7) Walkway: The width of a walkway should be at least 36 inches.

8) Traffic Clearance at Seating: In a seating area where no traffic passes behind a seated diner, allow 32 inches of clearance from the counter/table edge to any wall or other obstruction behind the seating area. If traffic passes behind the seated diner, allow at least 36 inches to edge past or at least 44 inches to walk past.

9) Seating Clearance: Kitchen seating areas should incorporate at least the following clearances: At 30-inch-high tables/counters, allow a 24-inch-wide by 18-inch-deep knee space for each seated diner. At 36-inch-high counters, allow a 24-inch-wide by 15-inch-deep knee space. At 42-inch-high counters, allow a 24-inch-wide by 12-inch-deep knee space.

10) Cleanup/Prep Sink Placement: If a kitchen has only one sink, locate it adjacent to or across from the cooking surface and refrigerator.

11)Cleanup/Prep Sink Landing Area: Include at least a 24-inch-wide landing area to one side of the sink and at least an18-inch-wide landing area on the other side.

12) Preparation/Work Area: Include a section of continuous countertop at least 36 inches wide and 24 inches deep immediately next to a sink.

13) Dishwasher Placement: Locate nearest edge of the primary dishwasher within 36 inches of the nearest edge of a sink. Provide at least 21 inches of standing space between the edge of the dishwasher and countertop frontage, appliances and/or cabinets placed at a right angle to the dishwasher.

14) Waste Receptacles: Include at least two waste receptacles. Locate one near the sink(s) and a second for recycling in the kitchen or nearby.

15) Auxiliary Sink: At least 3 inches of countertop frontage should be provided on one side of the auxiliary sink and 18 inches on the other side.

16) Refrigerator Landing Area: Include at least 15 inches of landing area on the handle side of the refrigerator or 15 inches of landing area on either side of a side-by-side refrigerator or 15 inches of landing area no more than 48 inches across from the front of the refrigerator or 15 inches of landing area above or adjacent to any undercounter refrigeration appliance.

17) Cooking Surface Landing Area: Include a minimum of 12 inches of landing area on one side of a cooking surface and 15 inches on the other side. In an island or peninsula, the countertop should also extended a minimum of 9 inches behind the cooking surface.

18) Cooking Surface Clearance: Allow 24 inches of clearance between the cooking surface and a protected noncombustible surface [ex: a range hood] above it. At least 30 inches of clearance is required between the cooking surface and an unprotected/combustible surface [ex: cabinetry] above it. If a microwave hood is used, then the manufacturer’s specifications should be followed.

19) Cooking Surface Ventilation: Provide a correctly sized, ducted ventilation system for all cooking surface appliances; the recommended minimum is 150 CFM.

20) Cooking Surface Safety: Do not locate the cooking surface under an operable window. Window treatments above the cooking surface should not use flammable materials. A fire extinguisher should be located near the exit of the kitchen away from cooking equipment.

21) Microwave Oven Placement: The ideal location for the bottom of the microwave is 3 inches below the principle user’s shoulder but no more than 54 inches above the floor. If the microwave is below the countertop the bottom must be at least 15 inches off the finished floor.

22) Microwave Landing Area: Provide at least a 15-inch landing area above, below or adjacent to the handle side of a microwave.

23) Oven Landing Area: Include at least a 15-inch landing area next to or above the oven. At least a 15-inch landing area not more than 48 inches across from the oven is acceptable if the appliance does not open into a walkway.

24) Combining Landing Areas: If two landing areas are adjacent, determine a new minimum by taking the longer of the two landing area requirements and adding 12 inches.

25) Countertop Space: A total of 158 inches of countertop frontage, 24 inches deep, with at least 15 inches of clearance above, is needed to accommodate all uses.

26) Countertop Edges: Specify clipped or round corners rather than sharp edges.

The layout of your kitchen—where you place your appliances, your countertops, and your storage—will determine how cook-friendly your kitchen is. Ask yourself:

Will I have to walk far to get water to top off a pot on the stove?

Will I have enough space to slice, dice, chop, and otherwise prepare meals?

Will I have room to store the olive oil near the stove or will I have to go across the room to get it?

Will two or more cooks be able to work comfortably in the space without constantly bumping into each other?

Will I be able to easily rinse dishes and load them into the dishwasher?

Do I prefer a range or a separate cooktop and oven?

Do I need a prep sink and a cleanup sink?

Do I need an eating area in the kitchen?

Of course, if you’re remodeling, the structure of your existing home will limit your layout options. You’ll have considerably more flexibility the larger your space and if you’re building a new home or adding on.

Small Kitchen

Question: I just bought my house and the kitchen really needs to be remodeled. The problem is, every wall in this cube has a door, doorway or a window. And the window is too low to put a counter in front of. I do have a table right now in front of the window, but I can’t open the refrigerator or my baker’s rack all the way. This was a cottage built near the beginning of the 20th century, and I don’t think the kitchen was made to entertain.

Answer: Like any remodeling project, you’ll first have to ask yourself what you’re willing to spend. The doors, hallways and long window all pose problems, and the best ways to make this kitchen more functional and entertaining-friendly involve structural changes, which can become expensive in a hurry.

If cost isn’t a big concern, consider eliminating the bathroom entrance into the kitchen.

“One of the first things I would look at is the possibility of closing the door off for the bathroom and moving that entrance someplace else, perhaps off the front hall,” says Therese Kenney, a designer at Drury Designs in Glen Ellyn, Ill. “That gives the homeowner another wall for cabinetry and countertops.”

“Moving the hallway entrance to the kitchen down to the opposite end,” she adds, would give you the “L” kitchen shape, and you could put a table in the corner.

If the hallway entrance cannot be shifted, Kenney suggests moving the living room entrance to the stove’s current location to create another common kitchen layout.

“[Moving the living room entrance] would give you the opportunity to create a “U”-shaped kitchen opposite the bathroom, and keep the traffic flow out of the working area of the kitchen,” she says.

If your goal is to make the space feel less boxed in, consider creating an open floor plan by knocking down the wall separating the kitchen and the living room. In this scenario, you could also add an island with a range in front of the sink, eliminating the need for a stove near the living room. Just remember that NKBA planning guidelines call for the island to be at least 42 inches from the front of the sink..

Even if structural changes are out of your budget (or if they will compromise the integrity of the home), an island behind the sink could still increase the functionality of your kitchen. It could either serve as a space for your range, or it could be used as a work station and a table. A two-tiered island can help you create separation between the cook’s space and the guest’s space. While this plan eliminates a traditional table from the room, the island seating area still allows you to entertain.

This WhisperCeiling™ ventilation fan features a centrifugal blower which ranges from 50 CFM to 380 CFM. The Panasonic blower wheel is designed to draw air in from both sides, which helps keep the noise down, as there is more area for the air to enter the wheel. This bathroom exhaust fan is quiet enough that you might not even know it's on. This fan is designed to give you continuous, trouble-free operation for many years thanks to its high-quality components and permanently lubricated motors. The fan housing is made of heavy-gauge zinc galvanized steel and painted to protect it from rust. Energy Star qualified products feature super-quiet operation and high CFM-to-Watt efficiency. This Panasonic fan has a built-in damper to prevent backdraft. Cool running motors and fluorescent bulbs do not create excessive heat.
