It is on a bay near the Cap de Creus peninsula, on the Costa Brava of the Mediterranean. It is only a two-and-a-half hour drive from...
Barcelona, and thus it is very accessible and not only attracts tourists but people who want a second home for weekends and summers. In 2002, Cadaqués had an official population of 2,612, but up to ten times as many people can live in the town during the peak of the summer tourism season.

Cadaqués has a special place in art history. Commanding charcoals, by local artist Mei Fren, of the 19th century Cadaqués beleaguered by a winter Tramontane, can be seen at the Cadaqués museum. Fren was the first modern artist to live in Cadaqués and gave the town many of his works and a marble top table on which he sketched many of its turn of the century fishermen.

Salvador Dalí often visited Cadaqués in his childhood, and later kept a home in Port Lligat, a small village on a bay next to the town. A summer holiday here in 1916, spent with the family of Ramon Pichot is seen as especially important to Dalí's artistic career. Other notable artists, including Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, Marcel Duchamp, Antoni Pitxot, Henri-François Rey, Melina Mercouri and Maurice Boitel also spent time here. Cadaqués is mentioned in the story Tramontana by Gabriel García Márquez.

The interesting submarine life of this sleepy fishing village was studied for several years by psychologist Françoise Ardré, long before Cadaqués was discovered and transformed into a tourism destination. On Mondays there is a travelling market in Cadaqués, located near the parking lot. This market has a wide variety of products. Different people have different ideas of their perfect beach. For some the pebbles of Brighton are bliss, for others the wind swept sand dunes of south west France is a delight. Koh Tao beaches tend towards the populist view of paradise. Imagine fine white sand, under an azure sky, the clear warm waters of the Gulf of Thailand lapping at the beach. A line of coconut trees provide welcome shade from a strong sun. A beach bar built from the same trees and roofed with banana tree leaves serves beer cold enough to chill even the uptight.
The area and the neighbouring Vikos Gorge, the largest canyon in Greece and (disputably) in all of Europe[citation needed], attracts many hikers and mountaineers from around the world. The village of Papingo proper is surrounded by snowcapped mountains (in winter) and also has provisions for lodging as well as tavernas serving up traditional Greek food, coffee, and spirits.

The prefecture of Trikala is a mountainous region which gradually descends from altitudes of over 2000 meters to the great plain of Thessaly. This is where the capital of the prefecture is situated. The comfortable and pretty city of Trikala, built upon the ruins of ancient Trikki and along the banks of the Lithaeos river, has a population of 45000 people, a full third of the total population of the prefecture.

vcearly settlements dating as far back as the Neolithic period have been found under the thick layers of soil which have been sheltering them for millennia. During the classical period, the most important centers here were the cities of Trikki and Aeginion. The prefecture has suffered many invasions and conquests. It was plundered by Persians, then conquered by Romans. Byzantine rule, though Greek in origin, often failed to protect the region from the onslaught of the barbarian raids, which plagued all of Europe during the middle ages. The network of monasteries atop the Meteora rocks served as a refuge and as a cultural haven during most of these long periods of trouble. Beginning in the 11th century, the monks gradually built their monasteries upon this impossible location, and have been residing there ever since. Following their example, most of the populace of the region sought the protection of the highlands, where they flourished as producers and traders of silk, wool, and textiles. Finally, the region fell to the Turks, and after nearly five centuries of Turkish oppression, Trikala rejoined Greece in 1898.

SIGHTS

The mountainous landscape of Trikala is dominated by the presence of one of the most impressive spectacles in the world, the grey rocks of Meteora. The scene is breathtaking, awe-inspiring in itself; huge masses of granite jutting straight out of the ground, resembling tree trunks with their tops chopped off, their formation being so uncanny that it seems difficult to believe that this is a work of nature and not a work of man. But though man had nothing to do with this impressive formation of rocks, the ?rock forest?, he has, after all, laid his touch on the picture. Six monasteries adorn the tops of the rocks, monuments of faith, of devotion, and of sheer willpower. It is difficult to get to the top of these rocks just by carrying one?s own weight, and doing so with a load of building materials would seem irrational. Yet the monks managed to build an entire complex which can host hundreds and still have enough private room for tranquil prayer. Just below, at the foot of the rocks, the town of Kalambaka stands over the ruins of ancient Aeginion, some remains of which can still be seen. It is believed that an even older city lies underneath, the legendary ancient Ithomi, a participant in the Trojan War. The nearby cave of Theopetra provided shelter to humans as long as 75000 years ago. In the city of Trikala, the imposing Byzantine fortress is well-preserved, and the traditional Varoussi neighborhood lying at its feet complements its medieval image. Other sights here include ancient Trikki, the old churches, built between the 16th and the 17th century, and the old clock. The Neolithic settlement in Zarkos dates back into the 7th millennia BC, and includes one of the most ancient organized burial grounds in the world. The region is literally bursting with monuments, mostly of ecclesiastical interest. Furthermore, it is a region of unparalleled natural beauty. Fir, beech and chestnut forests cover its mountains and hills, forming a green blanket which turns into pure white in the winter. Countless streams, rivulets, waterfalls and small lakes add in to complete this picture of divine natural perfection.

ENTERTAINMENT-SPORTS-SHOPPING

Both the capital city of Trikala and Kalambaka have a well-organized tourist infrastructure, a situation which can be found all across the prefecture. High quality accommodations and a sufficient market are accompanied by night clubs, bars, cafes, restaurants, taverns, and traditional feasts. A chance to attend one of the latter is an experience one should never miss. The swap meet in Trikala will complement this taste of cultural initiation, as it is among the oldest and largest bazaars in Greece. Finally, few places offer comparable sporting opportunities, though many will consider keeping up with the local delicacies a much more exciting and no less challenging sporting event. Kokoretsi, kontosouvli, spleen sausage, goat soup, tripe soup, frumenty, and crushed grain are but few among an endless array of specialties. The taverns in the villages of Pertouli and Elati are best suited for these contests of gastronomy, while the beautiful scenery seen on the ride is enchanting. A few jars of honey, fine textiles and hand-woven clothing will be ideal to take back home along with the pleasant memory of this land.

ACCESS

There is a daily bus service to the capital of Trikala and to Kalambaka from Athens and Thessaloniki. The train, beginning from Pireaus, Athens, Thessaloniki, or Larissa, reaches the city of Trikala through Volos.

CONNECTIONS

There is a direct bus connection with the cities of Larissa, Karditsa, Volos, Grevena, Ioannina, Athens and Thessaloniki. The extensive bus network easily connects this central region with any location in mainland Greece.

MUSEUMS

The city of Trikala hosts a folk art museum rich in items of cultural interest. There is also an interesting art gallery, while the library in the village of Kastania houses more than 3000 books.

ALTERNATIVE TOURISM

Spiritual (a visit to Meteora commands piety even to the most casual believer), archaeology, gastronomy, ecotourism, agrotourism, caving, canyoning, and sporting (mountain climbing of the highest levels, mountain bike, trekking, rappel, parapente, ski, snowboard).
Lake Pamvotis lies at the centre of a 480 metre-high basin in a picturesque mountain setting, with the Kyra Frosyni Island in its middle and the sprawling city of Ioannina on its western shores.

Natural beauty, historic and ...
modern buildings come together at Ioannina, offering a vibrant and contemporary city comprising the most important commercial and cultural centre in Epirus and north-western Greece.

The Archaeological Museum of Ioannina exhibits finds from Epirus ranging from the Paleolithic period to Roman times. They include artefacts from the sacred area of what claimed to be the oldest-known oracle in ancient Greece in the Temple of Zeus at Dodona.

Byzantine finds can be seen at the 'little island' of Kyra Frosyni and monasteries with splendid frescoes, together with the legendary Ali Pasha's house - last refuge. The Byzantine museum at Ioannina situated in the medieval castle within the citadel, is also worth visiting. The tomb and the headquarters of Ali Pasha can also be found here. A walk along the lake shores and the castle walls, next to historical places and buildings conjures-up legends such as that of Kyra Frosyni. She was sentenced to drown in the lake after having caught the eye of Ali Pasha who desperately fell in love with her.

The University of Ioannina, major hospitals, the new Egnatia Motorway, the Nautical Club and the Centre of Nautical Sports, the Airport, the 'lake-planes', the expansion of the city, the construction of large-scale public works are evidence of the city's modern hub.
Ha Long” is literally translated as "Bay of Descending Dragons." Prior to the 19th century, this name was not recorded in any document or archive.
When mentioning the present-day ...

Quang Ninh Sea or Ha Long Bay, old historical books often referred to them by the names of An Bang, Luc Thuy or Van Don. Not until the late 19th century did the name of Halong Bay appear on a French Marine Map. “The Hai Phong News”, a French newspaper of the time, had an article, “Dragon appears on Ha Long Bay”, reporting the following story:

In 1898 a sub-lieutenant named Lagredin, captaining the ‘Avalanse’ reported seeing a huge sea snake on Ha Long Bay. This was also witnessed by many of the crews. Thus emerged the European image of the Asian dragon. Whether this appearance of a strange animal looking like a dragon resulted the name of Ha Long Bay is not known (Reference “Quang Ninh: Art and Culture” published in 2002).
There is also a local legend, which has been handed down, relating to the name Ha Long Bay, which tells the following tale:
“Long ago, in the first founding days, the Viet people were attacked by foreign aggressors. The Jade Emperor sent the Mother Dragon and her band of Child Dragons to help the Viet people fight the invaders. While the enemy vessels were launching massive attacks against the mainland, the dragons descended in flocks from the sky. They spat out innumerable pearls which changed into jade stone islands the moment they touched the water. These islands linked together to form firm citadels that checked the enemy’s advance and smashed their vessels to pieces.
After the invaders were driven out, Mother Dragon and her Child Dragons did not return to Heaven but stayed on earth, right at the place where the battle occurred. The spot where the Mother Dragon landed was Ha Long, and where the Child Dragons came down was Bai Tu Long. The place where their tails violently wagged was called Long Vi, the present-day Tra Co Peninsula with its soft sandy beach stretching many kilometers.”

Halong bay history
For hundreds of years, Halong Bay has been an important part of the culture and history of Vietnam. Though it only contains a coastline of 120 kilometers, the area has been a big part of life in northern Vietnam. Halong Bay, also known as Vinh Ha Long, means "Bay of the Descending Dragon". There are approximately 1,969 small islands in the bay, all comprised of different size and form. These islands have intrigued and amazed locals for hundreds of years. There are over 200 species of fish and over 450 species of mollusks in the waters around the bay. These waters now help sustain a community of fisherman, many of them living on floating junks in the water. These communities are close knit and extremely important to the success of the area. This area has also sustained naval wars for hundreds of years. At least three times in history this bay has helped stop the Chinese navy from invading northern Vietnam. This bay was also mined by the United States Navy during the Vietnam war. Many of the mines are still unexploded in the bay, which poses a threat to local fishermen. The area first became popular for tourists in the 19th Century, when French visitors explored the area. It now serves as the most popular tourist attraction and resort community in Vietnam.

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brasil - watch the video!

Rio de Janeiro is the most visited city in the southern hemisphere and is known for its natural settings, carnival celebrations, samba, Bossa Nova, balneario beaches such as ...
The city with the most glorious history in the world, a city worshipped by gods and people, a magical city.

The enchanting capital of Greece has always been a birthplace for civilization. It is the city where democracy was born and most of the wise men of ancient times. The most important ...
civilization of ancient world flourished in Athens and relives through some of the world's most formidable edifices.

Who hasn't heard of the Acropolis of Athens? Photos and history of the most famous archaeological monument in Europe have made the world tour causing feelings of admiration by thousands of people. Acropolis is nominated to be one of the 7 wonders of modern world. In fact the trademark of Athens is one of the favorites. The Holy Rock of Acropolis dates back to the 5th BC, the famous Golden Age of Periklis. Athens met times of bloom and decline, but still shines under the Attic sky gazing the future. Still sparkling like the marbles of Parthenon and the limpid white of Pentelic marble.

Athens is situated in the prefecture of Attica and extends to the peninsula that reaches up to Central Greece. It is surrounded by mountains Ymmytos, Pendeli and Parnitha, northwards and eastwards, and the Saronic gulf southwards and westwards. The sun is shining over Athens all year round. The climate is one of the best in Europe, with mild winters and very hot summers, ideal for tourism. It is located just a few kilometers from the port of Piraeus, the central commercial port of the capital, and the shores of southern Attica.

Athens is constantly inhabited since Neolithic Age. The 5th century was the time of its ultimate bloom, when moral values and civilization surpassed city limits and became the mother land of western civilization. In the centuries that followed, many conquerors tried to take over Athens. In 1834 Athens was chosen to be the capital of the newly established Greek State. The city that now hosts more than 4,5 million people, was constructed around the Acropolis walls. Today it is the political, social, cultural, financial and commercial center of Greece.

Athens is a city of different aspects. A walk around the famous historic triangle (Plaka, Thission, Psyri) the old neighborhoods, reveal the coexistence of different eras. Old mansions, well-preserved ones and other worn down by time. Luxurious department stores and small intimate shops, fancy restaurants and traditional taverns. All have their place in this city.

The heart of Athens beats in Syntagma Square. Where Parliament and most of the Ministries are. Monastiraki, Kolonaki and Lycabettus Hill attract thousands of visitors all year round. A few kilometers from the historic center in Faliro, Glyfada, Voula and Vouliagmeni, you can enjoy the sea breeze. Or you can head up north and enjoy the fresh air at the more classy neighborhoods of Marousi, Melissia, Vrilissia and of course Kifisia.

Athens and Attica in general have the most important archaeological monuments (Acropolis, Odeion of Herodes Atticus, Olymbion, Roman Market, Panathinaiko Stadium or Kallimarmaro, The Temple of Poseidon in Sounio, etc). In the capital you will admire many imposing neoclassic buildings, true ornaments of the city (The Greek Parliament, Athens Academy and University, etc). Don't miss visiting the museums hosting unique treasures of our cultural inheritance (Archaeological Museum, Military Museum, Byzantine Museum, etc).

Athens has always attracted peoples' attention. During the 2004 Olympic Games proved that, despite all the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, she never - not once - lost the talent. The return of Olympic Games to their birthplace was a great success.

TThe capital is famous, more than any other European capital, for its nightlife. Athens by night totally changes. The options for entertainment satisfy all tastes. The famous "bouzoukia" are the leaders in the Athenian entertainment. While the numerous theaters all around Athens offer a different type of entertainment. Athens is a divine city. Let it enchant you...

The summer is relatively cool and the temperature seldom rises above 39°. The winter ...
rains are what makes Corfu one of the greenest of the Greek Islands. Car Hire Corfu Airport will be helpful to round this beautiful island.

The Corfu Weather is why since Victorian times the island has attracted British holiday makers to the island. Believe it or not there is even a Cricket Field in the centre of Corfu Town. Seduced by the climate, the beautiful beaches and landscape many people are seeking that second or retirement home in Corfu. One of Britain's famous naturalists Gerald Durrell lived on Corfu.

CUBA - watch the video

In Cuba, holidays have that ‘something special’ that sets them apart. The Caribbean's biggest island offers all the pleasures we associate with this part of the world: sun, sea, sand and a laid-back vibe - but with a difference.
For Cuba's extraordinary history, its years of self-sufficiency and its unique Afro-Latin culture make for a holiday destination that's like nowhere else on earth.

Cuba holidays offer you a ...
very different take on life. How do those 1950s American cars keep going, you'll ask yourself. How come the shop that was empty on Tuesday is full today? Life has a random edge to it that will probably be like nothing you have experienced before, but adopt that essential laid-back attitude, light up a Havana cigar, order a rum cocktail and that special Cuban vibe will get under your skin.

You'll also be totally enchanted by the beautiful colonial buildings and romantically faded grandeur of the capital, Havana. Holidays here provide a chance to take in some of the best Spanish colonial architecture in the Americas, much of it untouched since it was built! Wander down the quaint street Calle Obispo to admire the old-fashioned shop windows and tiny cafés. This leads to Plaza de Armas with its fine old buildings. Don't forget to visit Castillo de la Punta and Castillo de la Real Fuerza - Cuba's oldest building.

After all this culture you'll probably need a break, and where better than the island's famed beach destination - Varadero, famous for its unspoiled white sands and crystal-clear waters. Alternatively you can escape to relax on the beautiful, untouched island of Cayo Santa Maria or snorkel through the fantastic corals and reefs off Guardalavaca. If you're looking for an all inclusive holiday, Cuba is a fabulous destination. A growing number of resorts here offer all-inclusive packages - and these are Caribbean all-inclusive experiences with a difference too. Because the island is largely self-sufficient, you can sample truly local food and drink, rather than the international brands we're so used to.

You can't possibly have escaped the worldwide salsa craze, and in Cuba you can experience that wonderful music to the max. Come and sample it all, immersing yourself in the spirit of Cuba - drink the rum, smoke the cigars, dance the salsa and live 'la vida dulce'!
The most interesting feature of the town is the dramatic backdrop of the steep Meteora rocks that frame the northern part of the skyline. Its population is 6500. Its elevation 207m.
Kalambaka offers a ...
number of hotels accommodations for visitors to Meteora, and its busy main street is filled with smalls tourist shops, cafes and restaurants.
The high rock named “Agia” is the landmark and separates it from Kastraki (2 km westward), and the paved road leads to the monasteries.

Ancient Aiginio is believed to be under the earth in the area (probably around, or under Kastraki village ).
The town is clean and quiet, with one main street that runs through it like a backbone, and several squares adorned with lavish fountains that become pivot points for families and boisterous children late in the evening. Most restaurants and cafes are located along the main street and in the few side streets in the center of town. Kalambaka is a year-round tourist destination wand hosts a museum of modern art, and a traditional wood carving school.
