[ Tutorial ] Nandroid Backup and CWM (ClockWorkMod) Recovery for S2 i9100

This tutorial is for starters who are looking to dig deep into their android devices.
Well Nandroid is a safe bet, as if something goes wrong one can restore the state at which they created a backup (just like restore point in windows).

So the problem arrives when we reboot our system into recovery (because every where it is written that we can create our backup (nandroid backup) in recovery mod). Stock recovery does not provide the options of backup and restore.

This problem was resolved by koushik dutta who created CWM (ClockWorkMod) Recovery, which gives us the option of BackingUp our data and Restoring it.

There are two ways to get the CWM Recovery mod.

Flash a custom kernel with CWM Recovery. (No use if we want to backup everything in our stock ROM including stock kernel.)
Using temporary CWM Recovery. (I prefer this one as this is safer and doesn't affect any system files and is removed after normal reboot).

I will be focusing more on second one but will explain first method as well.

Using temporary CWM Recovery:

To do the Nandroid Backup follow these steps:

1. Download cwm-touch-6.0.1.2-i9100.zip

2. Place the cwm-touch-6.0.1.2-i9100.zip file in the external SD card.

3. Now power off and boot into stock recovery (Vol Up + Home + Power) and choose "apply update from external storage".

4. Now locate and select your cwm-touch-6.0.1.2-i9100.zip. (this step gives a temporary flash that will disappear after reboot.)

5. Now you will be rebooted in the CWM Recovery.

6. In the Interface select "backup and restore"

7. Inside you will get many options like (backup, restore, delete, backup to internal SD card, restore from internal SD card.)

If you select Backup, CWM will create Nandroid backup in External SD card (inside folder /CloclWorkMod/backup)

If you select Backup to internal SD card, CWM will create Nandroid backup in Internal SD card (inside folder /CloclWorkMod/backup)

Or you can use recovery-clockwork-4.0.1.5-galaxys2.zip. This is the non touch version.

I have tried both and noticed the difference in the backup size.
With version 4.0.1.5 my stock JellyBean backup size was 2.23 GB whereas when I used 6.0.1.2 backup size was mere 19MB. I restored from both of them and restored version were working fine.

Flash a custom kernel with CWM Recovery:

Kernel Developers these days all support CWM Recovery. Few famous kernels for S2 i9100 are Siyah and Dorimanx (both supports dual boot and both use CWM Recoveries)

To flash Kernels you must have either Kernel.zip or Kernel.tar file (tar files are flashed using Odin or Mobile Odin while Zip files are flashed using Recovery (recovery flashing is same for all zip files))

It has been a little less than a year since I got my first android device and it is still in warranty, and I have started experimenting on it (did nandroid backup of stock incase anything goes wrong).

Well this post is about rooting the i9100 device without increasing Flash counter and showing Yellow Triangle and I did a lot of research before doing it (as 1st time is the scariest). But thanks to XDA community, it was made easier for me. It provided me many ways to root the Samsung's 1st famous android device.

Thanks to Phil3759 for providing the best solution.

This method even works in the stock recovery of Samsung. It does not include the busybox.
Just follow these steps:

I will not be responsible if your device bricks.
Precaution: Do a nandroid backup before proceeding. Nandroid Tutorial

Steps to follow:

1. Download Root_SuperSU.0.96.Only-signed.zip

2. Save the Root_SuperSU.0.96.Only-signed.zip file into your external SD card.

3. Now power off and boot into stock recovery (Vol Up + Home + Power) and choose "apply update from external storage".

4. Now locate and select your Root_SuperSU.0.96.Only-signed.zip.

5. Go back to main menu of recovery and select "reboot system now"

You are now rooted.

This method will give you Chainfire's SuperSu to manage root permissions.
Advantage if Chainfire's SuperSu is that you can do clean Unroot without any hassle and from the app itself.

Android Bug (Update)

Update: With the new Jelly bean update rolling out, this bug seems to be fixed on 4.1.2 android, but is still present in 4.0.3 and 4.0.4 ICS versions of S2.

I have been using android for past few months. So this post was just to test the bug in the android stock browser (Touchwiz) that was going around and haven't been fixed yet. So clicking on the following linksfrom android phone will open phone dialer and do as mentioned.

Why is it dangerous:

If the IMEI code is displayed on clicking the IMEI Link then your phone can also be remotely wiped using the USSD bug with some default USSD codes available for each phone.

USSD codes for Reseting phones are:
*#7780# Factory Reset
*2767*3855# Full Factory Reset
*#*#7780#*#* Factory data reset

If these codes are included in iframe html tag then these codes are executed on Page load.

Work around until your phone developer fix it is that you install a seperate Dialer. Just go to play store and search for Dialers. So when ever it tries to open any malicious code it will ask for which dialer to choose.

Openning multiple Gtalk instances

Most of the time we come across situations when we want to open multiple accounts in our Gtalk or want to chat with our buddies who are on multiple accounts. For such situations we have one simple solution to it and It is a simple procedure and using it we can open our multiple gmail accounts in gtalk and use them simultaneously. Just follow the following steps:

1. Locate your G-talk executable file.

2. Create a short-cut

3. Now add following at the end of Target :

/nomutex

Like this:

Click OK.
This is all that is required.

4. Now Rename the file to something meaningful:

5. Now open any number of instances of G-Talk and log-in using your multiple accounts.

Sharing a folder between Windows host and linux guest

If you are a Linux user and have Linux installed in the Virtual Machine (Virtual Box) then you preferably want to share a folder between your windows host machine and the Linux guest machine. This tutorial will guide you how you can share a folder and your data between two systems.

First you need to have GuestAdditions installed on your guest machine.

1. Go to settings in VirtualBox.

2. Now select Shared Folders and click on the Add Shared Folder (or press Ins)

3. New window will open.

Select other and select the path for the folder to be shared with the linux guest machine. (let us say we have shared a folder named sharedhost and check the box auto mount in present.

All this has to be done in the host side.

4. Now start the Linux machine.

5. Open terminal, get root access and type:

#mkdir /mnt/sharedguest

sharedguest will be present in the mnt folder.

6. Now type:

#mount -t vboxsf sharedhost /mnt/sharedguest

This line you have to enter every time you login into the system. Else we can add this line to rc.local file so that it initializes on every restart.
For that type:

#gedit /etc/rc.local

now add

#mount -t vboxsf sharedhost /mnt/sharedguest

before

touch /var/lock/subsys/local

it should look like this

now restart the machine and check the mnt > sharedguest.

Installing VBoxGuestAddition in Linux

These days i have been working on Linux and found some difficulties in installing VBoxGuestAdditions on the Linux guest machine. So this tutorial will help out the starters who has installed the linux on their virtual machines.

Few features i have noticed after installing the GuestAdditions are:

It enables the mouse pointer integeration in the virtual machine, ie, you do not have to click on the screen of the virtual machine to capture the mouse.

It enables the full-screen mode.

Using the following steps one can easily setup the GuestAdditions

1.open the Linux VirtualMachine (Redhat Linux in my case)

2.Go to devices and select Install Guest Additions.

3. Now you will see a CD like folder on the desktop.

4. Now open terminal from Applications > Accessories > Terminal ( Applications > System Tools > Terminal (in some linux ))

5. Now type

for Ubuntu type : sudo su - or sudo -i
for Fedora and redhat type : su -

6. Enter the root password.

7. Type

cd /media/VBOXADDITIONS_4.0.0_69151/

VBOXADDITIONS_4.0.0_69151 is the name of folder in step 3

8. Type for redhat : sh ./VBoxLinuxAdditions.run

it will look like this :

[root@localhost VBOXADDITIONS_4.0.0_69151]# sh ./VBoxLinuxAdditions.run

Type for fedora : ./VBoxLinuxAdditions.run

9. It will now install the GuestAdditions

Why is the media here so negative?

Why are we in India so embarrassed to recognize our own strengths, our achievements?
We are such a great nation. We have so many amazing success stories but we refuse to acknowledge them. Why?

We are the first in milk production.
We are number one in Remote sensing satellites.
We are the second largest producer of wheat.
We are the second largest producer of rice.

Look at Dr. Sudarshan , he has transferred the tribal village into a self-sustaining, self-driving unit. There are millions of such achievements but our media is only obsessed in the bad news and failures and disasters.

I was in Tel Aviv once and I was reading the Israeli newspaper. It was the day after a lot of attacks and bombardments and deaths had taken place. The Hamas had struck. But the front page of the newspaper had the picture of a Jewish gentleman who in five years had transformed his desert into an orchid and a granary. It was this inspiring picture that everyone woke up to. The gory details of killings, bombardments, deaths, were inside in the newspaper, buried among other news.

In India we only read about death, sickness, terrorism, crime.. Why are we so NEGATIVE? Another question: Why are we, as a nation so obsessed with foreign things? We want foreign T.Vs, we want foreign shirts. We want foreign technology.

Why this obsession with everything imported. Do we not realize that self-respect comes with self-reliance? I was in Hyderabad giving this lecture, when a 14 year old girl asked me for my autograph. I asked her what her goal in life is. She replied: I want to live in a developed India. For her, you and I will have to build this developed India. You must proclaim. India is not an under-developed nation; it is a highly developed nation.

Do you have 10 minutes? Allow me to come back with a vengeance.

Got 10 minutes for your country? If yes, then read; otherwise, choice is yours..

Why don't YOU spit Paan on the streets of Tokyo ? Why don't YOU use examination jockeys or buy fake certificates in Boston ??? We are still talking of the same YOU. YOU who can respect and conform to a foreign system in other countries but cannot in your own. You who will throw papers and cigarettes on the road the moment you touch Indian ground. If you can be an involved and appreciative citizen in an alien country, why cannot you be the same here in India ?

In America every dog owner has to clean up after his pet has done the job. Same in Japan ..
Will the Indian citizen do that here?' He's right. We go to the polls to choose a government and after that forfeit all responsibility.
We sit back wanting to be pampered and expect the government to do everything for us whilst our contribution is totally negative. We expect the government to clean up but we are not going to stop chucking garbage all over the place nor are we going to stop to pick a up a stray piece of paper and throw it in the bin. We expect the railways to provide clean bathrooms but we are not going to learn the proper use of bathrooms.

We want Indian Airlines and Air India to provide the best of food and toiletries but we are not going to stop pilfering at the least opportunity. This applies even to the staff who is known not to pass on the service to the public.

When it comes to burning social issues like those related to women, dowry, girl child! and others, we make loud drawing room protestations and continue to do the reverse at home. Our excuse? 'It's the whole system which has to change, how will it matter if I alone forego my sons' rights to a dowry.' So who's going to change the system?

What does a system consist of? Very conveniently for us it consists of our neighbours, other households, other cities, other communities and the government. But definitely not me and YOU. When it comes to us actually making a positive contribution to the system we lock ourselves along with our families into a safe cocoon and look into the distance at countries far away and wait for a Mr.Clean to come along & work miracles for us with a majestic sweep of his hand or we leave the country and run away.

Like lazy cowards hounded by our fears we run to America to bask in their glory and praise their system. When New York becomes insecure we run to England . When England experiences unemployment, we take the next flight out to the Gulf. When the Gulf is war struck, we demand to be rescued and brought home by the Indian government. Everybody is out to abuse and rape the country. Nobody thinks of feeding the system. Our conscience is mortgaged to money.

Dear Indians, The article is highly thought inductive, calls for a great deal of introspection and pricks one's conscience too.. I am echoing J. F. Kennedy's words to his fellow Americans to relate to Indians...

Block Websites without any software

This method uses window's hosts file. HOSTS file to maintain a personal list of web addresses. Any time a request is made for a URL, the HOSTS file will be checked first. If a corresponding address is found you will be directed to that IP without first consulting a DNS Server. The original intent of this file was to define where sites exist; we will use it in this context to define where they don’t exist.

Lets first look at a HOSTS file entry

127.0.0.1 localhost

This is the loopback address for your machine for those cases where an application needs to reference the local machine by IP address- the loopback address will always be valid. This entry should never be changed.

Now lets add an entry to block

127.0.0.1 www.yahoo.com

We are telling our local machine that Yahoo actually exists on the local machine. Any request for www.yahoo.com will be directed to the local machine and therefore effectively blocked. You could also use the IP of another website if you wanted to be creative.

Let’s take a closer look at a URL http://www.yahoo.com

* http:// defines the transfer protocol in this case Hyper Text Transport Protocol; this is the standard for viewing websites. Another common protocol is ftp:// for file transfer.
* www is the host
* yahoo.com is the domain
* .com is further classified as the TLD (Top Level Domain)

A HOSTS file entry will disregard the transfer protocol so it isn’t needed. However, the host does play an important role. A webmaster may choose to define a host for his/her website. “WWW” has become the universal standard for the default host. It is just as common to define a site with no host as well. This means that as far as DNS goes www.yahoo.com & yahoo.com are two totally different sites, even though they resolve to the same place. Because of this to effectively block the site, you must also block all hosts. This would usually mean:

127.0.0.1 yahoo.com

127.0.0.1 www.yahoo.com

Now if you want to redirect yahoo.com to any other website then in place of 127.0.0.1 you just have to put the ip address of the site to which you want to redirect. For example

209.85.231.104 yahoo.com

209.85.231.104 corresponds to google.com. Now whenever someone tries to go to yahoo.com he will be redirected to google.com.

Now question arises how to get the ip address of the website. Thats simple - Open Command prompt and type ping "your site (google.com for me)" and hit enter and you will get the ip address.

This method is simple and working for IE and Firefox. IE also has a feature called CONTENT ADVISOR.

Lock any folder without any software

Here is the trick from which you can lock any folder in your computer. And it works on all windows (even win7).

NoTe- Its different from invisble as well hidden folder. Here you need to have a password with which you can open your folder

Instructions:

1) Copy the given code in a notepad and save the notepad in your pc with the name name.bat (that is with the extension of .bat). You can replace the name portion with anything u want.

NoTe- In place of password in the code given type your desired password.

2) A batch file will be created where you have saved. Now double click on it , it will make a folder with the name locker at the same place where the batch file is saved.

3) Now add the files you want to be locked in that folder.

4) Double click on the batch file. It will ask you about locking the folder formed. Type y(yes)and press enter. The folder will be locked and hidden.

5) To unlock,double click on batch file again and enter the password in the new window opened.

IE: Content advisor and password recovery

This step-by-step article describes how to use the Internet Explorer 6.0 Content Advisor to control access to Web sites. You can configure Internet Explorer to control the kinds of content users can view in the browser.

You can control content in two manners. You can use content rating systems, or you can specify Web sites. Administration of content-rating systems is done by independent organizations. Internet Explorer defaults to the ratings from the Internet Content Ratings association.

And incase you forgot the password you can remove it from the following method:

The following steps will remove any password set in the Internet Explorer Content Advisor and allow you to reset the program to its original state.

1) Click on Start and choose Run.
2) Type in RegEdit and select OK.
3) Now click on the little plus sign to the left of H_KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
4) Continue to drill down, always clicking on the plus sign at the left of the named key, through Software, Microsoft, Windows, Current Version and Policies.
5) Now click on the Ratings folder.
6) In the right pane of the RegEdit window, you'll see an icon called Key. Click on it and press Delete.
7) Next, choose Registry and then Exit to exit RegEdit. You've just deleted your original Content Advisor password.
8) Restart the computer and run Internet Explorer again.
9) Choose View and then Internet Options (or Options for version 3.x). For IE 5 or greater, Click on Tools, Internet Options.
10) Click on the Content tab and click on Disable. When asked for a password, don't enter anything; just click on OK. This will disable Content Advisor because there's no longer a password.

How to Fix Problems with Content Advisor Missing Information

In most cases, this problem occurs when the Ratings.pol file is damaged, follow the instructions below to fix this issue.

1) Quit Internet Explorer
2) Open My Computer, click on Tools, Folder Options
3) Click on the View tab and make sure "Show hidden files and folders" is selected, you may also want to uncheck the box next to "Hide extensions for known file types" and click Ok
4) Double click on Drive C in My Computer
5) Double click on the Windows folder and then double click on the System folder
6) Search for the file RATINGS.POL and right click on it and choose Rename. Rename it to RATINGS.OLD
7) Close out of the open Windows and then reopen Internet Explorer
8) Click on Tools, Internet Options
9) Click on the Content tab, then click on Settings
10) Type in the Supervisor password if necessary and click Ok
11) Select the Ratings options you would like and click Ok and close out of Internet Explorer
12) When you reopen Internet Explorer, everything should work.

Game publisher and digital distribution giant Valve has just pulled the curtain on a completely redesigned version of Steam. Available as an opt-in beta, the updated client is said to bring "hundreds of changes" aimed at improving the user interface, performance and functionality of the digital download service.

Some of the most notable improvements include an expanded Friends List to let players keep closer tabs on what their contacts are playing, a new in-game overlay design with more context sensitive information, redesigned Steam store, and several other UI changes that should improve the discoverability of features and better expose all the information related to games in your library. They've also swapped out the Internet Explorer web browser rendering engine with the faster and more stable WebKit.

Turn "on" your system using a mouse

Without using the "power on" button on the cabinet, directly clicking the mouse button, we can start our system, to do this process follow the steps

ATX motherboard and PS2 mouse on process support containing BIOS system will have this facility (mostly all our boards can support this option)

To execute this process, while restarting the system by clicking "DEL" button, we will get into BIOS

In that, go to INTEGRATED PERIPHERALS block, there will be an option named "PS/2 MOUSE POWER ON OPTION" this option will be disabled by default. We can change this option to DOUBLE CLICK OR DOUBLE LEFT CLICK and save the BIOS and restart the system.

From now on, there is no need to click power on button on the cabinet, just click your mouse, your system will be started.

Windows 7's 'GodMode'

Although its name suggests perhaps even grander capabilities, Windows enthusiasts are excited over the discovery of a hidden "GodMode" feature that lets users access all of the operating system's control panels from within a single folder.

By creating a new folder in Windows 7 and renaming it with a certain text string at the end, users are able to have a single place to do everything from changing the look of the mouse pointer to making a new hard-drive partition.

The trick is also said to work in Windows Vista, although some are warning that although it works fine in 32-bit versions of Vista, it can cause 64-bit versions of that operating system to crash.

To enter "GodMode," one need only create a new folder and then rename the folder to the following:

GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}

Once that is done, the folder's icon will change to resemble a control panel and will contain dozens of control options. I'm not sure it's my idea of playing God, but it is a handy way to get to all kinds of controls.

Create a Nameless File/Folder In XP

This trick will allows you to create files and folders without any name In XP.

Just follow these steps:

Select any file or folder.
Right click on it, press rename or simply press F2.
Press and hold the alt key. While holding the Alt key, type numbers 0160 from the numpad.
Press Enter and the nameless file or folder will be created.

Note :
Type the numbers 0160 from the numpad, that is, the numbers present on the right side of the keyboard. Don't type the numbers which are present on top of the character keys.

But what if you want to create another/More nameless file or folder in the same directory ?

Just follow these steps :

Select file, press F2.
Hold alt key and type 0160 from the numpad.
Release the alt key. Now without doing anything else, again hold alt key and press 0160.
Press enter and you will have second nameless file in the same directory.
Repeat The Process to create as many nameless files or folders in the same directory.

EA VP claims they have 'maxed out' the XBOX 360

In an interview with the Official Xbox Magazine during E3 last week, Patrick Soderlund, senior vice-president of EA games Europe, states that they have "maxed out" the XBOX 360 console, leaving very little or no headroom for future titles. He also added that they "haven't maxed out the PS3" and are "getting more power" out of Sony's console right now.

Soderlund was impressed with Microsoft's lineup at E3, especially Project Natal. He says he likes the Natal and calls it "cool" and "interesting". Project Natal, Microsoft's idea of "controller-free gaming and entertainment experience" may help spur newer ways of gaming, thus creating that little extra head room for game development on the 360. Soderlund feels that Microsoft's strong presence at E3 will keep competitors on their toes. Their showcase was strong enough to make the 360 Soderlund's "personal favourite console".

"I think Microsoft is on a roll right now. They're doing really well. If I was Sony, I would have a headache, to be honest."

But he hasn't completely written off Sony: "Sony has a lot of good games this year. If you go to their booth, there's a very consistent, high quality product line-up and that will help them."

Microsoft should take this matter seriously considering that they have pledged a ten year lifecycle for the XBOX 360, which is similar to Sony's plan for all of its consoles. Shane Kim, corporate vice-president for strategy and business development at Microsoft's game division, "firmly" believes that the 360 can last well into 2015.d

Intel launches ultra-thin chips

SAN FRANCISCO: Intel Corp has launched a lighter, power-saving microprocessor intended for use in ultra-thin laptops, a move by the top chip maker to shore up its lead in mobile computing.

The new processor, dubbed the Pentium SU2700, comes amid investors' fears that cheaper processors such as the Atom, designed for use in ultra-cheap netbooks, are cannibalizing the market share for higher-margin, more expensive chips.

Acer and Asustek have said they will build laptops with the chip, and Microsoft will ensure its software supports it.

Intel expects that by the fourth quarter of 2009, about a fifth of its consumer shipments will be for the new-generation laptops, slimmer and more energy-efficient.

Intel is upbeat on the ultra-thin market and expects "explosive growth in 2009, very similar to the netbook growth," Intel's director of mobile platforms product marketing Uday Marty said on a conference call.

Asutek, which in 2007 pioneered the successful low-cost, no-frills netbook PC in 2007, is expected to unveil five new laptop models based on the technology this year.

Analysts say Intel's CULV platform may offer a cheaper - but virtually as powerful - alternative to the traditional processors it makes for laptops, while enabling laptops to begin to approach the diminutive size of netbooks.

Intel on Monday also released three new Core 2 Duo processors and a new mobile chipset.

Red Hat has announced the release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.3.

The company has posted details about the latest version of their Linux-based operating system, noting that the latest version has been delivered to customers with a Red Hat subscription, via Red Hat Network.

Updated features, provided to customers through subscription model, deliver enhanced virtualization scalability, OpenJDK functionality and Intel Nehalem processor support to enable customers to run the most demanding workloads on more affordable platforms
