Over the past few weeks since the Lagos State government
placed a ban restricting commercial motorcycles popularly known as Okada from
major roads in Lagos, residents have been experiencing some difficulty in
commuting to their various destinations. This has been made worse by the
ongoing fuel scarcity which has ensured that fewer vehicles for public
transportation are available on the streets thereby causing a hike in transport
fares.

Everyday, especially at the rush hours, the bus-stops are
thronged with people looking for vehicles to get them to their destinations.
But while some residents are calling for the reintroduction of the Okadas, the
state government remains adamant on the ban and has announced plans to
introduce bicycles lanes on major roads across the city.

Channels TV reports that the Commissioner for
Transportation in Lagos, Mr Kayode Opeifa, made the announcement on
Sunday at a cycling event called ‘Park and Ride’. Park and Ride is an annual
event organized by On Air personality, Mannie of CoolFM Lagos,
which urges people to park their cars and ride bicycles in a bid to address
climate change and improve people’s lifestyle.

“The bicycle programme is on and pretty soon, you will
see some roads in Lagos, marked as bike zones. What is alternative to Okada
(motorcycle) is the bicycle,” the Commissioner said.

He also discouraged the use of Okada on
short distances. “Anybody who wants to take a bike (Okada) from their house
to the bus stop, should use their bicycles. And when they get to the bus
stop they should tie their bikes to the poles provided at the bus stop and join
the BRT buses. The poles we are providing at the bus stops are not for
decorations but for people to tie their bicycles,” he added.

He also noted that cycling will enhance people’s
lifestyle and would reduce the the emission of harmful gases into the
environment. “All over the world, from London to Stockholm to Buenos Aires,
people now ride their bikes to work because it saves the environment of the
gaseous emissions that is harmful to the environment.“

While admitting that the tropical weather in Lagos will
make it uncomfortable for cyclers, the Commissioner said that it would
encourage offices to provide showers to ameliorate the discomfort.

Hmm… I wonder how many Lagos residents know how to ride
bicycles. And with the narrow nature of most of our roads which are often
filled with such large trucks, it might be absolutely scary to ride a bicycle
on major roads. However, do you think this is a laudable initiative from the
Lagos State government? Would bicycles help in reducing the traffic congestion
on our roads? Would you be willing to park your car and ride a bicycle?

The United States of America has been hit by one of the
biggest storms to ever descend on the country,Superstorm Sandy, with
major disasters recorded in the cities of New York and Long Island. The
storm which hit the mainland at 6.30pm local time yesterday has left a
major parts of the cities under water. Millions of people on the East Coast are
said to be facing fallen trees and widespread power outages caused by the giant
storm, which swamped New York City’s subway system and submerged streets in
Manhattan’s financial district.

At least 17 people have been killed in seven states
and power has been cut in more than 7.4 million homes and businesses from
the Carolinas to Ohio. Officials blamed at least 16 deaths on the
converging storms – five in New York, three each in New Jersey and
Pennsylvania, two in Connecticut, and one each in Maryland, North Carolina and
West Virginia. Three of the victims were children, one just 8 years old.

Daily Mail reports that New York was among the hardest
hit, with its financial heart in Lower Manhattan shuttered for a second day and
seawater cascading into the still-gaping construction pit at the World Trade
Center.

Among the dead in New York were two children killed
instantly by a falling tree in Westchester County, a woman electrocuted to
death by falling wires in Manhattan and a 29-year-old man killed in a car crash
in Queens. A 30-year-old man was also killed when a tree fell on his house in
Flushing, Queens.

In Gotham, an unprecedented 13-foot surge of seawater – 3
feet above the previous record – has gushed into the city, inundating tunnels,
subway stations and the electrical system that powers Wall Street, and sent
hospital patients and tourists scrambling for safety.

The storm has resulted in the cancellation of around 12,500
flights, and the number is expected to grow. Also today, stock trading will be
closed in the U.S. again for a second day running. The last time the New York
Stock Exchange was closed for weather was in 1985 because of Hurricane Gloria,
and it will be the first time since 1888 that the exchange will have been
closed for two consecutive days because of weather.

The storm has also halted the presidential campaign and
President Barack Obama has declared a ‘major disaster’ in New
York and Long Island as swathes of the city woke up under water after a
night of being battered by Superstorm Sandy.

Our hearts go out to the citizens and residents of the
Unites States at this difficult time and we pray that the souls of the departed
shall rest in peace.

He told Daily Mail that doctors at the hospital did not
believe he was the father. “They just laughed but they were very
surprised.”

What makes his story even more interesting is his very
active sex life and the fact that his wife also attests to it. According to his
wife, he can make love like a 25 year-old man.

Ramjit admits that as proud as he is of having two healthy
sons at his age and that his neighbours are jealous of his sex drive.

“I do it three or four times a night. My neighbours are
jealous and they keep asking me for my secret but all I tell them is that it is
God’s will. I’m healthy and I enjoy sex with my wife. I think it’s very
important for a husband and wife to have sex regularly and when she asks I will
go on all night but for the sake of my child I’ve put our needs aside for now.”

He claims that a daily diet of almonds, butter and milk kept
him sexually active.

Before he met his wife, he said he had been a widower for 25
years. They met 22 years ago on a rainy morning at a Muslim shrine. Ramjit
asked her to come home with him and she has never left. He said he took
her under his wing, taught her some yoga and they fell in love. “Many
of my past girlfriends had died so I had never married and then I asked
Shakuntala to be my wife. She didn’t have any family or friends around,
and I wanted to help her,” he explains.

Shakuntala believes she would have been dead by now if it
was not for Ramjit’s caring ways.

She said: “It doesn’t matter how old he is, I love
him and I care for him dearly even, though he shouts at me sometimes. He
doesn’t seem old to me, he can make love like any 25-year-old man, even better
because he can go on all night, and he makes a wonderful father.”

Wow, what an interesting couple.

More revelations are emerging on how four University of Port
Harcourt undergraduates were killed as a suspect in custody, David Ugbaje,
Tuesday accused a policeman of participating in the lynching of the deceased.

He said the policeman joined the mob in the killing of the
four students at Omuokiri, Aluu, in Rivers State on October 5.

Also yesterday, the police announced that they had arrested
the fleeing principal suspect in the murder, Lucky, alias Bright, who raised
the false alarm that labelled the students as armed robbers, which prompted the
rage of the mob.

Lucky was said to owe one of the victims some money and they
had gone on a debt-recovery mission, when he accused the deceased of trying to
rob him.

Ugbaje told journalists Tuesday in Port Harcourt, when the
police paraded him and 12 other suspects for their alleged involvement in the
crime, that one of the policemen who met them when the mob was beating the
students joined them in beating the victims.

He explained that it was after the policeman had partaken in
the beating that he requested that the students be handed over to them, a
request which the mob refused.

As Ugbaje narrated, "along the line, two policemen came
around. One of the policemen was pleading that the boys be left alone, but the
other one even joined us in beating the boys. After beating the boys, the
policemen now said let the boys be handed over to them. The crowd said no: We
no go gree. The policemen now told us that whatever this will result to, they
(the crowd) will bear the consequences."

Ugbaje's narrative tallied with the eyewitness account of
Miss Ibisobia Elkanah, an elder sister of one of the victims, Tekenah Friday
Elkanah. Ibisobia said the police were not repelled by the mob as claimed by
them (police), but that one of the policemen suggested that the victims be
burnt alive.

"The police van came, went into the mob and they were
talking to them (youths). The people kept quiet as the police were making
statements. I heard them laughing. You know, they were happy. They kept quiet
again. The police talked and they laughed again. The next was for me to see
three policemen coming out of the mob, boarded their van. And, one of the said
'burn them alive'. I must confess, I was gripped with fear," she said.

But the police's storyline has been that they were chased
back by the murderous mob, forcing them to call for reinforcement from the
Joint Task Force (JTF). However, men of the JTF did not come until several
hours after the students had been killed and burnt.

The police had earlier announced the arrest of 21 suspects
in connection with the crime, including the traditional ruler of the community.

Those paraded included the traditional ruler of Omokiri
village, Alhaji Hassan Welewa, Lawal Segun, Lucky Orji, Cynthia Chinwo, Ekpe
Daniel, George Nwadei, Gabriel Oche and Ozioma Abajuo.

Others were Chigozie Evans Samuel, Endurance Edet, Uwem
Sampson Akpabio, David Chinasa Ugbaje and Ikechukwu Louis Amadi (alias Kapoon).

However, while the police allowed journalists to interview
Ugbaje, Amadi and Segun, other suspects, especially Welewa, were shielded from
the press.

Briefing journalists, the state Commissioner of Police,
Mohammed Indabawa, said the police arrested two additional suspects, Amadi and
Ugbaje, at about 3pm on Monday.

He said the police were forced to parade the suspects
because of the enormity of the crime and the interest the crime had generated.

"It is not the philosophy of the Inspector General of
Police to parade suspects. Nonetheless, the gruesome manner in which the crime
was committed, coupled with the direct and glaring involvement of some of these
suspects and the interest generated by the heinous crime left the police with
no option than to parade them," he said.

The Inspector General of Police (IG), Mohammed Abubakar, had
ordered a full investigation into the crime.

Studying in Ukraine, has in recent times, been a topic of
debate considering the alleged racial discrimination being experienced by
Nigerian students and the problem of communicating in English Language. As
English is not the official language spoken in Ukraine, Nigerian students often
have difficulties in communicating when they travel there for their studies.

To buttress this, the Nigerian Ambassador to Ukraine, Frank
Ngozi Isoh, has advised Nigerian parents to be wary of sending their
children to English Language training institutions as Ukrainians are not
proficient in the language.

In September, the National Universities Commission (NUC) had
said some states sponsor students to sub-standard universities abroad and
Ukraine was one of the countries mentioned. The Executive Secretary
of NUC Professor Julius Okojie also made reference to a
university in Ukraine where there are over 800 medical students and some of the
students do not have the qualification in basic sciences.

In a recent report by Daily Trust, the Ambassador made some startling revelations
that raises some doubts about the idea of studying in Ukraine.

The Ambassador said that Nigerians won’t get the best when
it comes to studying in Ukraine with the English Language. “One thing I
will like to say about education in this place, and this is something we intend
to package in a report to government to see how this can be propagated back
home – I do not think that Nigerians get the best when it comes to studying in
this place in the English language.”

While noting that the lure for most parents is the low
cost of tuition which is about $3,000 for a course that could cost up to
$20,000 in the United States or Canada, the Ambassador further said that
the people who teach them in English language are natives of Ukraine who
are also not very proficient in the language.

He advised students who want to study in Ukraine to first
learn the local language in order to get the best out of the education system.
While speaking on Universities in Ukraine offering medical courses, he said he
doesn’t think Nigerian medical students trained in English get the best. “We
don’t think that Nigerian medical doctors trained in English speaking
universities here get the best. But those who endeavour to learn the
language and then attend lectures with the natives certainly get better
trained.”

It was only weeks ago that news of a Nigerian student
studying in Ukraine who faced life imprisonment for allegedly defending
himself against six teenagers surfaced in the media {click here to read it}. What was noteworthy about his case
is that he was remanded in detention for several days by the Ukrainian police
who refused to take the case to court citing unavailability of the police to
get an interpreter for him.

If you were planning on studying in Ukraine, it might be
wise to listen to the advice of the Ambassador.

In many African countries, it is illegal to be gay. 25
out of 38 African nations have passed laws that give varying degrees of prison
sentences to people caught practicing homosexual acts. In Nigeria, a
14-year jail term is prescribed for convicted offenders under the Same Sex
Marriage (prohibition) bill which was passed into law in 2011.

These laws have received mixed reactions from Africans
across the continent. While some have lauded it in countries where they have
been passed, others have said there are more important things to focus on and
an individual’s sexuality should not be subject to scrutiny and punishment.

At the recent Pan African Parliament in Johannesburg on
9th October, 2012, the topic of imprisonment of homosexuals in Africa was again
raised.

A Ugandan lawmaker, Atim Ogwal Cecilia Barbara called
for the life imprisonment of all African gay people.

SABC reports her comments at the Parliament: “Africa
must stand up. We must pass a resolution condemning homosexuality because it is
not an African culture. We are not allowed to practice polygamy in other
countries, why should we be forced to do what is not natural?”

Homosexuality which is already illegal under Uganda’s penal
code, is highly stigmatized in Uganda. The country has one of the strictest Anti-Homosexuality Bill often called the “Kill the
Gays bill”. It divides homosexual behavior into two categories:
“aggravated homosexuality”, in which an offender would receive the death
penalty, or “the offense of homosexuality” in which an offender would receive
life imprisonment.

Although she failed to convince other lawmakers and her
proposal was rejected, she once again brought to the fore, Africa’s standpoint
against homosexuality.

As a continent, do you think we are treading on the right
path with respect to enacting laws against homosexuality? Did the lawmaker go
too far with her suggestion?

Please share your thoughts.

David Siegel, the owner of Westgate Resorts, sent a
surprising email to his employees Monday. It said that if President Barack Obama
wins re-election and raises Siegel's taxes, he will have to lay off workers and
downsize his company - or even shut it down.

"If any new taxes are levied on me, or my company, as
our current President plans, I will have no choice but to reduce the size of
this company," he wrote. "Rather than grow this company I will be
forced to cut back. This means fewer jobs, less benefits and certainly less
opportunity for everyone."

In a version of Romney's "47 percent" remarks,
Siegel added that "people like me who made all the right decisions and
invested in themselves are being forced to bail out all the people who didn't.
The people that overspent their paychecks suddenly feel entitled to the same
luxuries that I earned and sacrificed 42 years of my life for."

The points are ones that have often been made during this
election. But what makes the letter surprising is the source.

you know our company, Westgate Resorts, has continued to succeed in spite of a
very dismal economy. There is no question that the economy has changed for the
worse and we have not seen any improvement over the past four years. In spite
of all of the challenges we have faced, the good news is this: The economy
doesn't currently pose a threat to your job. What does threaten your job
however, is another 4 years of the same Presidential administration. Of course,
as your employer, I can't tell you whom to vote for, and I certainly wouldn't
interfere with your right to vote for whomever you choose. In fact, I encourage
you to vote for whomever you think will serve your interests the best.

casts employers against employees. They want you to believe that we live in a
class system where the rich get richer, the poor get poorer. They label us the
"1%" and imply that we are somehow immune to the challenges that face
our country. This could not be further from the truth. Sure, you may have heard
about the big home that I'm building. I'm sure many people think that I live a
privileged life. However, what you don't see or hear is the true story behind
any success that I have achieved.

I started
this company over 42 years ago. At that time, I lived in a very modest home. I
converted my garage into an office so I could put forth 100% effort into
building a company, which by the way, would eventually employ you. We didn't
eat in fancy restaurants or take expensive vacations because every dollar I
made went back into this company. I drove an old used car, and often times, I
stayed home on weekends, while my friends went out drinking and partying. In
fact, I was married to my business - hard work, discipline, and sacrifice.
Meanwhile, many of my friends got regular jobs. They worked 40 hours a week and
made a nice income, and they spent every dime they earned. They drove flashy
cars and lived in expensive homes and wore fancy designer clothes. My friends
refinanced their mortgages and lived a life of luxury. I, however, did not. I
put my time, my money, and my life into this business --with a vision that
eventually, some day, I too, will be able to afford to buy whatever I wanted.
Even to this day, every dime I earn goes back into this company. Over the past
four years I have had to stop building my dream house, cut back on all of my
expenses, and take my kids out of private schools simply to keep this company
strong and to keep you employed.

Just think
about this - most of you arrive at work in the morning and leave that afternoon
and the rest of your time is yours to do as you please. But not me- there is no
"off" button for me. When you leave the office, you are done and you
have a weekend all to yourself. I unfortunately do not have that freedom. I
eat, live, and breathe this company every minute of the day, every day of the
week. There is no rest. There is no weekend. There is no happy hour. I know
many of you work hard and do a great job, but I'm the one who has to sign every
check, pay every expense, and make sure that this company continues to succeed.
Unfortunately, what most people see is the nice house and the lavish lifestyle.
What the press certainly does not want you to see, is the true story of the
hard work and sacrifices I've made.

Now, the
economy is falling apart and people like me who made all the right decisions
and invested in themselves are being forced to bail out all the people who
didn't. The people that overspent their paychecks suddenly feel entitled to the
same luxuries that I earned and sacrificed 42 years of my life for. Yes,
business ownership has its benefits, but the price I've paid is steep and not
without wounds. Unfortunately, the costs of running a business have gotten out
of control, and let me tell you why: We are being taxed to death and the
government thinks we don't pay enough. We pay state taxes, federal taxes,
property taxes, sales and use taxes, payroll taxes, workers compensation taxes
and unemployment taxes. I even have to hire an entire department to manage all
these taxes. The question I have is this: Who is really stimulating the
economy? Is it the Government that wants to take money from those who have
earned it and give it to those who have not, or is it people like me who built
a company out of his garage and directly employs over 7000 people and hosts
over 3 million people per year with a great vacation?

Obviously,
our present government believes that taking my money is the right economic
stimulus for this country. The fact is, if I deducted 50 percent of your
paycheck you'd quit and you wouldn't work here. I mean, why should you? Who
wants to get rewarded only 50 percent of their hard work? Well, that's what
happens to me.

Here is
what most people don't understand and the press and our Government has chosen
to ignore - to stimulate the economy you need to stimulate what runs the
economy. Instead of raising my taxes and depositing that money into the
Washington black-hole, let me spend it on growing the company, hire more
employees, and generate substantial economic growth. My employees will enjoy
the wealth of that tax cut in the form of promotions and better salaries. But
that is not what our current Government wants you to believe. They want you to
believe that it somehow makes sense to take more from those who create wealth
and give it to those who do not, and somehow our economy will improve. They
don't want you to know that the "1%", as they like to label us, pay
more than 31% of all the taxes in this country. Thomas Jefferson, the author of
our great Constitution, once said, "democracy" will cease to exist
when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who
would not."

Business is at the heart of America and always has been. To restart it, you
must stimulate business, not kill it. However, the power brokers in Washington
believe redistributing wealth is the essential driver of the American economic
engine. Nothing could be further from the truth and this is the type of change
they want.

So where
am I going with all this? It's quite simple. If any new taxes are levied on me,
or my company, as our current President plans, I will have no choice but to
reduce the size of this company. Rather than grow this company I will be forced
to cut back. This means fewer jobs, less benefits and certainly less
opportunity for everyone.

So, when
you make your decision to vote, ask yourself, which candidate understands the
economics of business ownership and who doesn't? Whose policies will endanger
your job? Answer those questions and you should know who might be the one capable
of protecting and saving your job. While the media wants to tell you to believe
the "1 percenters" are bad, I'm telling you they are not. They create
most of the jobs. If you lose your job, it won't be at the hands of the
"1%"; it will be at the hands of a political hurricane that swept
through this country.

You see, I
can no longer support a system that penalizes the productive and gives to the
unproductive. My motivation to work and to provide jobs will be destroyed, and
with it, so will your opportunities. If that happens, you can find me in the
Caribbean sitting on the beach, under a palm tree, retired, and with no
employees to worry about.

NEW YORK, Oct 10 (Reuters) - Women seeking the best place to
work and raise children in the United States may want to head to Ohio, where
three of its cities have been voted among the 10 best for working mothers.

Columbus topped the ranking by Forbes, edging past New
Orleans and Hartford, Connecticut and their surrounding areas. Cincinnati and
its suburb of Middletown came in fourth, just ahead of Providence and
neighboring towns in Rhode Island.

With a population of 1.8 million, Columbus scored high marks
for its higher than average salaries for women, who make up 44 percent of the
city's workforce.

The city also boasts a jobless rate of 5.7 percent, much
lower than the national 7.8 percent, and good schools and childcare, according
to Forbes.

"Pairing the excellent unemployment rate with an
affordable but impressive quality of living makes the city an attractive locale
for savvy working moms," Forbes said.

Another Ohio city, Cleveland, came in seventh, while Buffalo,
New York, which topped the list last year, dropped to eighth place.

New Orleans' affordable childcare and higher per-pupil
spending helped to propel it into the top 10. Families in the city, known as
the Big Easy, pay about $5,900 annually for childcare, while New Yorkers have
to budget more than double that amount - roughly $13,000.

Although working mothers are paid among the highest salaries
in Boston and Washington D.C., both cities dropped out of the top 10 this year
because the cost of living and childcare are above average, according to
Forbes.

And like New York, where people spend as much as 80 minutes
commuting each day, workers in Boston and the nation's capital also have
lengthy trips back and forth to work.

To compile the list, Forbes ranked the cities on job
opportunities and earning potential, cost of living, commuting times, cost of
childcare, quality of schools, crime rates and healthcare.

It used data from various sources including the U.S. Bureau
of Labor Statistics, the FBI Uniform Crime Report, the National Association of
Child Care Research and Referral Agencies and the ACCRA Cost of Living Index.

For many years, scientists and researchers across the world
have been trying to find a cure for one of the world’s deadliest virus, the
Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Although these scientists say there is yet
no cure for HIV and AIDS, traditional medicine practitioners have made several
claims to finding the cure.

One of them who is generating some buzz on the international
scene is the Gambian President, Yahya Jammeh.

He claims to have cured 68 patients who had HIV/AIDS in
varying degrees using his secret concoction of boiled herbs. In 2007, he first
announced that he had found a natural remedy to cure AIDS, stirring anger among
Western medical experts who claimed he was giving false hope to the sick.

His supposed cure has not been endorsed by the World Health
Organisation and the United Nations. Rather, they have have said his treatment is alarming mainly
because patients are required to cease their anti-retroviral drugs which makes
them more prone to infection.

But the president said recently that he has cured the
seventh batch of HIV/AIDS patients undergoing his herbal remedy since the treatments began five years ago.

Reuters reports that he said he wasn’t expecting people to
praise him in a television broadcast:
“Who am I to expect that everybody would praise me. Just as the Prophet
Mohammed prevailed and established Islam (…)I also prevailed to cure HIV/AIDS to
the point that 68 are being discharged today,” he said.

I remember reading a similar article some weeks ago where
HIV patients were warned not to stop using their anti-retroviral drugs while
trying out such medicines by people who claim to have found a cure. However, it
might be understandable that in the face of despair, when hope of a cure is
presented to a patient, they tend to push away their trust in scientific
medicine and try out the herbs.

The Gambian President is not the first person claiming to
have found the cure for HIV/AIDS through traditional medicine. However, no
respected worldwide health organisation like the WHO has endorsed any of such
traditional cures, and so, their claims remain shrouded in mystery as the
scientists continue to search for a cure that the world would accept.

On the other hand, I can’t help but wondering if some
tangible results would be gotten if such organisations work together with the
traditional medicine practitioners to find a cure. I’ve heard of people who
have found lasting solutions to their health problems with the use of
traditional medicine and herbs when orthodox medicine failed. Has the
possibility of finding a cure using a
synergy of efforts of scientific researchers and traditional medicine
practitioners been explored? Is it possible that the cure to this deadly
disease lies in herbs?

Nigeria and the United Kingdom have reached an understanding
to begin a prison swap programme. This would be launched as soon as Nigeria
signs its Prison Act into law.

The Chairman Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and
Legal Matters, Senator Dahiru Tambuwal said this on Monday at the flag-off of
2012 prison audit by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Kuje
Prison.

The Senator said funds for the programme, which the United
Kingdom is willing to provide, would be used to renovate prisons so as to make
the facilities habitable enough and kept at least to meet minimum world
standard to accommodate inmates. The United Kingdom, he added, has promised to
provide money to fund the process of prison inmates’ exchange.

Senator Tambuwal said that the Bill seeking the amendment of
the Prison Act has gone through the second reading and would be finally passed
by the senate in two weeks, after which the Prison swap process can begin.

“The process to evolve a new prison law has gone beyond the
second reading as we are now looking at it clause-by-clause,” Daily Times
quoted him as saying. “It is expected that in about two weeks, the process
would have been completed and the amendment effected.”

The Senator did not give details of the Prison swap
programme in the news report. This is what I am even more curious about. Are
they bringing British prisoners serving time to Nigerian Prisons and taking
Nigerian prisoners abroad? Or would it be a situation where Nigerian prisoners
serving time in the UK would be brought to the renovated prisons here in
Nigeria in order to decongest their own prisons? What is the whole essence of
the Prison Swap programme? What benefits does it hold for the Nigerian and UK
government?

Any thoughts?

The city of Lagos is known for many things. As the most
populous city in the country, Lagos is the commercial hub and serves as a
meeting point for people from different cultures, religion, profession and
more. Lagos is a very diverse city. But do you think innovation is one of the
things the city is known for?

Lagos, along with 24 other cities has been nominated for the Most
Innovative City of the Year Award.

The Award which is being organised by Wall Street
Journal and sponsored by Citigroup in partnership with Urban Land
Institute recognizes places where people, passion and ingenuity are
shaping efforts to build sustainable and liveable cities. According to the
organizers, the competition tests the ability of the nominated cities to
re-imagine themselves.

On the Wall Street Journal website, some of the credit given to
Lagos include

Under
Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola, Lagos instituted a science and
     technology-based Innovation Advisory Council.

The
city’s urban population has grown 6% to 8% annually in recent years,
ballooning to 18 million people in 2010.

Lagos’s
GDP is $33 billion, and accounts for roughly 25% of Nigeria’s overall GDP.

Frontier
Strategy Group named Lagos one of the “Big 5” cities in Africa, projecting
that it will soon outpace Johannesburg in business opportunities.

The
city is Nigeria’s “gate to the sea,” accounting for 80% of national
     seaport activity.

Aside from Lagos, Cape Town, South Africa is the only other
African city on the list. Other cities are Sao Paulo, Medellin, London,
Shenzhen, Hamburg, Berlin, Raleigh-Durham, Vancouver, Boston, Atlanta, New
York, Melbourne, Hong Kong, Singapore, Shanghai, Copenhagen, Toronto, San
Francisco, Bratislava, Tel Aviv, Chicago, Vienna and Seattle.

The competition is now in its second phase. Out of the 25
cities, three will make the final shortlist and these cities will be announced
at the Wall Street Journal Magazine Innovator of the Year Awards on October 18.

Voting would then resume on October 19 to determine the
winning city which will be announced in the Wall Street Journal magazine early
next year.

So, compared to other cities on the list, do you think Lagos
has what it takes to be called the most innovative city in the world?

industry and are back with a funky new tune, “Atide”featuring Ajebutter22. The
track was produced by one of the Bonafide crew, JB.

Ever since news of the gruesome murder of four undergraduate
students of University of Port Harcourt went viral, some Nigerian celebrities
have taken to Twitter and other social media platforms to condemn the act. One
of whom is Chocolate City artiste, M.I, who has been praised
severally for his great writing skills.

But this time around, M.I is not writing lyrics or poems.
His heart-touching piece on the murder of the students – The Hope Is
The Worst Part Of It calls on every Nigerian to be part of a change to
ensure that this sort of thing never happens again.

Here is his story as published on MIAbaga.com

The hope is the worst part of it.

The way they lay there, beaten and broken, battered and
bruised. Knowing their end had come for certain. Knowing that the crowd meant
to see this through to the end. And yet, in the midst of all this certainty, in
some small corner of their hearts, hoping. That something would
happen, some miracle perhaps.

I am speaking of course, of the #Aluu4, students of
University of Port Harcourt who were beaten and set ablaze last week.

I’d heard the news sometime last week and devoted all of 10
seconds of thought to it. I wondered briefly who the students were, and what
could possibly have driven them to steal. I briefly wondered if they were
really guilty but my mind quickly shied away from where that road could lead. I
remembered all the stories I grew up hearing about thieves and the instant
justice meted out to them, and mentally shook my head.

That would have been all, I suppose, but for the video. It
is probably the most gruesome thing I have ever seen, and the worst I ever hope to
see.

Hope.

There, I’ve said it again. Somehow it seems there is no
escaping it.

Because when things like this happen, it seems our default
reaction is to hope it will never happen to us or any one we
know or love. Then we hope that our religion and hard work and
luck will exempt us from senseless suffering. Sometimes we hope that
right thing will be done, the wrong doers brought to book, and the victims
receive some sort of justice.

Every day we hope the country we live in
will be a better place for us and for our children.

And that is the problem with hope.

That we have allowed it to cripple us and render us
inactive.

You , me, all of us who sit by hoping and
doing nothing to change.

The question is not whether or not the 4 boys stole
anything. That is quite besides the point.

Let us ask instead: What do I need to ensure my children do
not grow up hearing stories like these?

What would it cost to make this country and are we willing
to pay the price?

Because if I were there that day, would I have spoken up and
done my best to put a stop to it? Or silently stood by, condemning the actions
in my heart, but doing nothing? Would I have been seized by the bloodlust and
fear and anger myself, and spurred them on with my shouts, and cries for blood,
maybe tossed in a rock or two for good measure.

The society is a mirror of each of us. It is sad and
sickening that this was allowed to happen. It shows us all what we are capable
of, what w will each do given the right set of circumstances.

These 4 murdered men, their deaths should not be in vain. If
anything good could come out of a mess so sordid, let it be that every Nigerian
begins to think about the problem and what to do to solve it. Let it be that we
understand the problem is ourselves and our failure to take a stand against injustice
and lawlessness over the years. Let it be that we promise ourselves never to
let this happen again. Not on our land. Not as long as we’re alive.

I hope this time we get it right.

A campus police officer at the University of South Alabama
fatally shot a naked freshman who authorities said repeatedly rushed the
officer in a threatening manner. At 1: 23 a.m. Saturday, an officer responded
to a banging noise on the window of the police station.

“When an officer exited the station to investigate, he was
confronted by a muscular, nude man who was acting erratically,” the university
said in a statement. That student was identified as Gil Collar, 18, of
Wetumpka, Ala.

Authorities said Collar repeatedly charged at the officer,
despite verbal commands to stop. Hoping to defuse the situation, the officer
drew his weapon and retreated several times.

Collar then knelt, according to police, before he got up and
rushed the officer one final time. When Collar ignored commands to halt, the
officer fired his weapon, hitting the 18-year-old in the chest, police said.

Collar was knocked to the ground but managed to get up one
more time to challenge the officer before he collapsed and died, police said.

Local prosecutors are investigating the shooting at the request
of university police. The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on
paid administrative leave.

Three Nigerian pilgrims in Saudi Arabia have died, Dr Bello
Tambawwal, the Head of National Hajj Commission of Nigeria Medina Mission,
said. Tambawwal made the disclosure in an interview in Medina, saying the
pilgrims were from Kebbi, Kano and Katsina states.

He said the first was a pilgrim from Kano State, who died
aboard the plane conveying him and others in the inaugural flight to Jeddah,
Saudi Arabia.

He said the others died in Medina from illnesses but added
that ”both of them were in their ripe age at the time of their death.”

Tambawwal said the Nigerian mission was working hard to
ensure that medical services were available to the pilgrims always by operating
two clinics in Medina, which rendered services for 24 hours.

He said the commission was working with the medical teams of
state pilgrims’ boards to ensure that priority attention was given to the
health- care of pilgrims.

He commended FCT, Edo, Jigawa, Osun and Kogi states for
their zeal and commitment to the health-care of their pilgrims and urged others
to emulate them.

Tambawwal also commended the states for the thorough
screening of intending female pilgrims, which resulted to none carrying a
pregnancy unlike in the past.

”Last year we had nine cases of pregnancy cases, resulting
in still birth or safe delivery of the babies but we have no pregnancy cases
this year”, he said.

Yesterday, we were shocked with the news and pictures of the
gruesome murder of four students of University of Port-Harcourt. The naked
pictures of the students showing them paraded, beaten with their bodies soaked
in blood and mud has left me feeling unsettled since I saw it. Next time I see
the message *viewer discretion is advised*, I would definitely think twice
before viewing them.

When the news went viral yesterday, it was reported that
they were accused of stealing phones and laptops and were beaten to death.
However, other accounts of the incident have emerged.

Some people claimed the students were actually cultists who
terrorized the community and at the time they were caught, they had dangerous
weapons on them.

On Twitter, someone using the handle @Penny_sugababe who
says she stays in Port Harcourt recounted her view of the incident. Although a
search for her original tweets shows that her account has either been deleted
or suspended (or probably it was just my internet connection), her tweets were
retweeted several times.

She started by saying “Gosh! So because the criminals that
were killed in PH today were cute, people are calling it injustice…Smh…
Nigerians sha”

Then she continued with more tweets which have been trending
on Twitter

She concluded with more tweets saying “They chose a wrong
path and they knew the end…. Did they expect an angry mob to pat dem on dia
backs and give them ice-cream? Oh please”

“Good night folks, pray for your loved ones, never to join a
wrong crowd or be misguided. The fate of those boys…. It is well.”

She received quite a bashing for her tweets anyway. But I
came across a similar witness account on a site called Date360. This was
reportedly written by a student:

The Students involved are Cultists, They went to attack
someone, they were about 5 in number, so on their way out, A girl saw them and
screamed, these alerted people and they attacked them.. One of them escaped and
the remaining 4 were caught with Weapons and beaten by a man , Hitting them
Mercilessly and bringing them to a slow and painful death.. The man later Got
Fuel and poured it in their mouth and lit it., Burning one student!, The man
was stopped with the arrival of the police so he couldn’t burn the rest, they
were later taken to the mortuary where the families of the deceased Came to claim
the corpse…

More reports have claimed that the boys were killed by one
man. While looking at the pictures, I noticed one particular man holding an
insanely big stick over a boy’s head who
was already weak, bloody and pleading for his life. I saw the man in another
picture putting a tyre across another boy’s neck.

I hope this helps the police in their investigations. The
governor of Rivers state, Rotimi Amaechi has reportedly ordered the immediate
arrest of the killers of the students.

What baffles me is that this act was carried out in broad
day light and in the midst of so many people. Were the boys’ sins so grievous
that no one could stop the men who were beating them up?

I think not just the state governor, but the President has
to intervene in this case. Despite what they might have done, this sort of
jungle justice, beating young men to death on the streets in the midst of
everyone including children just doesn't sound right.

Nigeria's
oil reserve will be depleted in 41 years, according to a World Bank Group's
twice-yearly analysis of the issues shaping Africa's economic prospects called
Africa's pulse.

The
report which was presented by the World Bank's chief economist for Africa,
Shantayanan Devarajan, yesterday said Nigeria's and Angola's oil reserves will
be depleted in 41 and 21 years respectively.

"Nigeria,
the largest regional producer, can keep supplying at 2011 levels for another 41
years, while Angola, the second largest producer in the region, has about 21
years remaining at current production levels before its known reserves are
depleted.

"Given
the size of these reserves, it is likely that the dependence on oil resources
in these countries are likely to continue in the near to medium term.
Production in newly oil-rich countries such as Ghana and Uganda could also last
for several years."

According
to the World bank's chief economist, Mineral wealth in African countries
including Nigeria don't translate to prosperity because the money accruing from
it doesn't pass through the citizens, and the citizens don't see the wealth as
theirs.

24 hours
after announcing his break up with girlfriend of almost two years, Karrueche
Tran, Chris Brown has released a video where he details his current dilemma of
being in love with two women. What he said in the video below

be honest. See, y’all don’t really get the real Chris Brown but I’m gonna be
honest. I’m stressed out. It’s not about the music cause I love my fans. It’s
just, when you share history with somebody, and then you tend to fall in love
with somebody else, it’s kind of difficult. Is there such thing as loving two
people? I don’t know if that’s possible
but for me, I feel like that. Y’all probably like, ‘What the f-ck is he talking
about right now’ but I am being real. I don’t want to hurt either or. I’m not trying to be a player, or a dog, not
none of that. My mother raised me differently, so I just can’t. I don’t know
man, a n-gga be stressing. That’s what n-ggas do. The life of Chris Brown

Facebook
CEO, Mark Zuckerberg hardly uses his own site to make announcements, at least
not as much as most of us. But the few times he does, it usually makes the
news. The young billionaire announced that he had gotten married in a private
ceremony some months ago on Facebook by simply changing his status from Single
to Married. And today, he announced on his wall that the social networking site
has hit a total of one billion users using it actively each month. This means
1/7th of the world’s population uses Facebook.
The message
already has over 400,000 likes. He wrote this on his wall: “This morning, there
are more than one billion people using Facebook actively each month. If you’re
reading this: thank you for giving me and my little team the honor of serving
you. Helping a billion people connect is amazing, humbling and by far the thing
I am most proud of in my life. I am committed to working every day to make
Facebook better for you, and hopefully together one day we will be able to
connect the rest of the world too.”

This
announcement is coming a few days after he granted his first television
interview since the social network’s IPO to Today’s Matt Lauer. I remember
reading the story on Daily Mail and smiling in admiration of the young
billionaire’s humility. He revealed that he owns multiple t-shirts of the same
color so he doesn’t have to worry about what to wear. This makes him seem like
he’s wearing the same shirt almost everyday. He even wore that same shirt
during the interview.

“I mean, I wear the same thing every day, right?” said
Zuckerberg. Asked by Lauer if he owns 12 of the same gray t-shirt, Zuckerberg
admitted it was more like 20. He revealed that
he doesn’t get much closet space at home, which is mainly used by wife
Priscilla Chan, but instead, his identical t-shirt collection lives in the one
drawer that he gets to use. “Like men everywhere,” said one of the world’s
youngest billionaires. Some time ago, he created quite a buzz when he wore a
pair of blue jeans to a friend’s wedding. Here are some few times he has been
caught wearing the same grey shirt.

wearing those more than a few times but he didn’t say how many he owns during
the interview. However, he revealed that Apple’s Tim Cook sent him an iPhone 5.
A few hours ago, he announced on his wall that Facebook had made a video to
illustrate how over a billion people around the world use it to connect with
one another. “For the first time in our history, we’ve made a brand new video
to express what our place is on this earth.” Check it out!

The spate of kidnappings in Nigeria has once again given the
country an embarrassing reputation. Over the past few years, reported cases of
kidnapping in the country has risen, with many cases remaining unsolved. In
some instances, the victims are never found and the culprits are never
apprehended.

The African Insurance Organisation (AIO), a
non-governmental organization recognized by many governments has said that
Nigeria accounts for a quarter of kidnap for ransom cases reported worldwide in
the last one year.

The AIO disclosed in its newsletter at the 18th African
Reinsurance Forum in Mauritius yesterday that Nigeria had been designated as
the global capital for kidnap for ransom due to the huge record of kidnap cases
reported in the country yearly.

In the report made available to Punch, the AIO stated, “The number of kidnaps for
ransom in Africa continued to increase. In the first half of 2011, Africa’s
proportion of the global total increased from 23 per cent in 2010 to 34 per
cent. Nigeria is now the kidnap for ransom capital of the world, accounting for
a quarter of globally reported cases.”

It further stated that kidnap and ransom insurance
constituted the illegal taking and holding captive of an insured person and was
triggered under the policy by a financial demand as a condition of the release
of the captive.

Wow, what a reputation. It’s really sad that Nigeria just
seems to be getting these notorious recognitions. We are somewhere at the top
of the list among the world’s most corrupt nations. And now, we are getting
recognized as the kidnap for ransom capital of the world. How shameful.
