The Institute of Jute Technology (IJT) founded on 20th February, 1947 in joint collaboration with Indian Jute Mills’ Association (IJMA) and University of Calcutta is now a Registered Society (under W.B. Societies Registration Act XXVI of 1961) situated at 35, Ballygunge Circular Road, Kolkata - 700 019 in the State of West Bengal, India managed by a Governing Council with Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta at the helm of affairs as President and adequately represented by University of Calcutta, IJMA, Govt. of India and other organizations. The Institute is an Autonomous Aided Registered Society.

8-Semester B.Tech in Jute Technology

· Qualification: Applicants should be Indian nationals, and have passed/appeared/or will appear on the year of admission at the 10+2 Higher Secondary Examination of the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education or equivalent examination of a recognized University or of a Board with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, English and any other fifth subject or any other qualification recognized by the University of Calcutta.

· Eligibility: Candidates shall be required to appear in a written test conducted by the West Bengal Board of Examination for Admission to Engineering, Medical and Technological Degree Colleges in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics (each paper of 3 hours duration) Candidate who reach qualifying standard at the written test will be offered admission by the Central Selection Committee in order of merit, subject to medical fitness.

Additional 15% seats reserved for Foreign Students and additional 10% seats through lateral entry.

4-Semester M.Tech in Textile Technology

This M Tech Course is specially designed to cover the state in art advancement in Textile Technology and chemical processing in general and the Technical Textiles in particular. The course contains eleven(11) theoretical papers of each 100 marks namely Advanced Engg, Math. & Statistics, Industrial Polymers & High Performance Fibers, Advances in Spinning & Technical Yarns, Advances in Weaving & Technical fabrics, Non-wovens ,Composites, Knitting , Textile Testing , Textile Structures and Analysis, Technical Textiles-I and II ( Packaging textiles, Geotextiles, Agro textiles, Sports textiles, Home textiles, Automotive textiles, Build-textiles, Protective textiles and Medical textiles etc.) , Production and Entrepreneurship Management & Costing, Computer Applications, Clothing Science and Advances in Chemical Processing etc. along with six practical papers on Manufacture of technical yarns , technical fabrics and Fibre reinforced Composites etc. besides their physical and chemical analysis and testing as well as minor and major project work on specialized areas of technical textiles. This course was first introduced in 2005 and since then it is continuing till date as a prestigious master degree course in Textile Technology with specilisation in Technical textiles with special emphasis of Jute and other natural fibres and technical textile products.

Eligibility: A candidate who has passed the B. Tech. examination in Jute and Fibre Technology or

Fibre Technology (Jute) or Fibre Technology or B. Sc.Tech./ B. Tech. examination in Textile Technology of the University of Calcutta or Bachelor Degree in Textile Engineering/Textile Technology/Textile Chemistry of other recognized University or an equivalent examination recognized by the University of Calcutta will be eligible for admission to the Master of Technology (M. Tech.) course in Textile Technology (Technical Textiles).

Textile Engineering and Technology deals with the study of various aspects of textiles from Fibre manufacturing, Spinning, Weaving, Textile Processing including sizing, desizing, scouring, bleaching, mercerizing, dyeing printing and finishing which are application oriented process. It also includes garment manufacturing, processing and Fashion designing and technology. Apart from traditional apparel textiles, this branch of technology has also in various other fields such as industrial textiles, agrotextiles, protective textiles, sporttextiles, mobiletextiles, etc. The disciple involves extensive study of chemical and physical principles, which is then utilized for the detailed study and analysis of the behavior of polymers involved in the formation of textile fiber. Apart from the above mentioned, there is also branches such as textile chemicals and textile machineries.

It is said that 'as long as child is born naked there is always scope for textiles'. Textile graduation ensures a bright and non-recessional carrier of the students as neither demand nor the supply of the textiles is ever going to be defoliated. In terms of volume, the textile industry is the third largest, worldwide, after tourism and information technology.

The Textile department offers one UG program in Textile Technology and two PG programs in Textile Engineering and in Fiber Science & Technology respectively, besides offering the Doctoral program. Inclusive of the first year students of 2007 entry, a total of 226 UG students are currently enrolled in this department in addition to 65 PG and 23 Ph.D. students. For the UG program the department offers 21 core and 26 elective courses over the two semesters while at the PG level 35 courses are on offer.

Programmes Offered

Undergraduate

Course offered: 4 years (8 semesters) B.Tech. Programme.

The Department offers an undergraduate programme leading to B.Tech degree in Textile Technology. During the first two semesters, the students take courses in basic sciences, engineering arts and sciences, and humanities and social sciences which are common to students of all disciplines. During the next two semesters, the students take a set of departmental core subjects in Textile Technology. From the fifth semester onwards they opt for departmental elective courses. In the new curriculum, there is increased emphasis on design, product and process development activities. In the final year, students are required to work on a project under the supervision of a faculty member. They also undergo practical training in an industrial establishment as part of their overall engineering education.

Postgraduate

Course offered: 2 yr. (4 semesters) M.Tech. Programme.

Two M.Tech programmes - in Textile Engineering and Fibre Science & Technology are offered. The Textile Engineering students are trained for mechanical processing of textile materials, while the Fibre Science and Technology students are trained for the manmade fibre industry as also the chemical processing of textile materials. The students are especially suitable for technical services; research and development work in industry.

Doctorate

Course offered: Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programme.

Current areas of Doctoral and post-doctoral research include study of structure and properties of fibres and fibrous materials, analysis and design of yarn and fabric formation systems, mechanics of production processes, comfort properties of textiles, optimization and mechanism of dyeing and preparatory processes, eco friendly processing, micro encapsulation, antimicrobial finishes, nanotechnology applications, plasma treatment, design of technical textiles, smart and innovative textiles, medical textiles, polymer composites and apparel engineering.

The Dattajirao Kadam Education society as its first step established the Textile and Engineering Institute in 1982. This institute was permitted by the State Government to start a Diploma course in textiles from the academic year 1982 to 83 without any grant-in aid from the Government. This was the first educational institute in the state to be started on grant basis and encouraged by the successful establishment of this, the Maharashatra State Government took a policy decision in 1983 to permit various social and industrial organizations of the state to start professional educational institutes, the decision which brought a revolution in the thinking and pattern of the education in the state.

Presently the institute conducts four degree courses, two diploma courses and one postgraduate course in textiles as well as one degree course each in Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Information Technology and Electronic Engineering, Electronics & Telecommunications Engineering.
