March 2, 2011: In 2008-2009, sunspots almost  completely disappeared for two years. Solar activity dropped to  hundred-year lows;  Earth's upper atmosphere cooled and collapsed; the  sun’s magnetic field weakened, allowing cosmic rays to penetrate the  Solar System in record numbers. It was a big event, and solar physicists  openly wondered, where have all the sunspots gone?  

       "Plasma currents deep inside the sun interfered with the formation  of sunspots and prolonged solar minimum," says lead author Dibyendu  Nandi of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research in  Kolkata. "Our conclusions are based on a new computer model of the sun's  interior."

For years, solar physicists have recognized the importance of the  sun's "Great Conveyor Belt." A vast system of plasma currents called  ‘meridional flows’ (akin to ocean currents on Earth)  travel along the  sun's surface, plunge inward around the poles, and pop up again near the  sun's equator.  These looping currents play a key role in the 11-year  solar cycle.  When sunspots begin to decay, surface currents sweep up  their magnetic remains and pull them down inside the star; 300,000 km  below the surface, the sun’s magnetic dynamo amplifies the decaying  magnetic fields.  Re-animated sunspots become buoyant and bob up to the  surface like a cork in water—voila!  A new solar cycle is born.

       For the first time, Nandi’s team believes they have developed a  computer model that gets the physics right for all three aspects of this  process--the magnetic dynamo, the conveyor belt, and the buoyant  evolution of sunspot magnetic fields.     

       "According to our model, the trouble with sunspots actually began  in back in the late 1990s during the upswing of Solar Cycle 23," says  co-author Andrés Muñoz-Jaramillo of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for  Astrophysics. "At that time, the conveyor belt sped up."     

       The fast-moving belt rapidly dragged sunspot corpses down to sun's  inner dynamo for amplification. At first glance, this might seem to  boost sunspot production, but no. When the remains of old sunspots  reached the dynamo, they rode the belt through the amplification zone  too hastily for full re-animation.  Sunspot production was stunted.

The Soviet North  West Front begins an offensive south of Lake Ilmen in an attempt to  encircle Demyansk. At the same time the newly created Volkhov Front  launches an attack to force the Germans back from around Leningrad.  Roosevelt’s first War Budget includes $13,250 million of defence  expenditure. Japanese troops complete their capture of Sarawak and also  take Jesselton in northern Borneo. British forces continue to retreat  south through central Malaya as the Japanese force a crossing of the  river Slim. The British commander, General Arthur E. Percival, hopes to  be able to hold at Johore until at least mid February.

As you'd expect, developers have wasted no time in tearing apart the Mac OS X Lion preview, and in so doing they've allegedly discovered some intriguing things -- namely, support for the SSD-wiping TRIM command, and a series of high-DPI display modes which would allow for icons and UI elements with twice the graphical detail -- which could mean a PC-sized Retina Display. The former doesn't sound like the most exciting upgrade, but it's truly a boon for Mac users with solid state storage, as TRIM can greatly improve write speeds in compatible drives. As far as the improved pixel density rumors are concerned, it's not clear whether Apple's actually looking at doubling display resolutions in new computers (9to5Mac imagines a 15-inch MacBook Pro with a 2880 x 1800 screen) or whether Apple's simply moving to maintain icons that are precisely the same physical size across all its displays -- which would make fantastic sense for a touchscreen UI, by the way.

It was back in July of last year that we first wrote about a service called Voyurl with the headline: It’s Hard To Tell If Voyurl Or Their Ads Are Creepier. You see, at the time, the still-in-stealth startup was targeting angel investors via Google ads get their attention to hopefully talk about their product. That’s actually pretty smart. So we had to give the edge to the product itself being creepier. You see, its aim was to be a service that made your entire browsing history public.

At the time, we said the best way to think of this was as a sort of “Blippy but with more potential porn”. Of course, Blippy has since been tweaking its service to be less about public sharing of your purchases and more about the social dynamics of purchases and recommendations. But fear not, Voyurl is gladly picking up the creepy mantle!

After all that time in stealth, the service finally launched in private beta recently. I’ve had a chance to test it out for a bit and it really is pretty amazing. By using a Chrome extension, they not only keep track of everything you browse on the web and publish it in a realtime updating list, but they can also publish your back-history of surfing as well.

So who the hell would want to possibly use this? Well, first of all, it is kind of fun. If you only browse sites you don’t mind sharing, or just don’t care in general, this is a fun way to share those sites with others. And it’s a fun way to easily keep track of these sites. And to get/give recommendations. More importantly, with the extension, you can easily pause the tracking — or you can set it to be anonymous with the click of a button. And you can stream just individual URLs (either with your name attached or anonymously).

And if you do choose to share, you’ll be adding your data to a growing database of interesting data from Voyurl users. You can easily see the system-wide Top URLs, for example. Here you’ll find that, unsurprisingly, Facebook dominates followed by Twitter, Tumblr, Google, Engadget, and even TechCrunch (though the amount of time spent on Facebook compared to other sites really is pretty amazing).

You can also break those charts down by categories or domains. And you can see the top users of the service based on both total site visits and total time spent browsing overall. In other words, this gives you great insight into the true Internet addicts.

So far, those in the beta seem to be the nerdy, early-adopter type who actually browse Reddit more than porn. But when this baby opens up to the regular public, I cannot wait to see what we find.

Obviously, this is very use-at-your-own risk. And things are still a bit buggy. But if you want to try out Voyurl, use this link made for TechCrunch readers. Fujitsu's latest image processor, the Milbeaut MB91696AM, has a new bag of tricks on tap, and it's fixing to unload them in April. The new Milbeaut sports ARM processors and a 'newly-developed' Full HD H.264 codec engine, making for 14-megapixel shooting at 8fps (or about 20 megapixels at 5.5fps) and low-noise Hi-Vision video recording at 1920 x 1080. So the processor, in its sixth iteration, sports high resolution photos and HD video all on the same chip, and features continuous photography speeds up to five times faster than its predecessors. Fujitsu's got plans to show off Milbeaut's mobile solutions at MWC next week, and we wouldn't be surprised to see the MB91696AM make its debut in Barcelona as well. Either way, the new processor is scheduled to ship starting in April for ¥3,000 (right around $36), which means new Milbeaut-equipped cameras won't shouldn't be far behind. Full PR after the jump.

iOS 4.2 Now Available, Brings Multitasking to iPad: "

The latest version of Apple’s mobile platform, iOS 4.2, is now available for the iPad, iPhone & iPod touch.

This version is especially important for iPad owners, as it brings over 100 new features from the last three version of iOS to that device, most interesting among them being support for multitasking. The feature enables users to keep several apps open at the same time and switch between them almost instantly, while preserving iPad’s battery life (which Apple refers to as “legendary”).

Other new features for the iPad include app folders, unified inbox, and the gaming social network Game Center. AirPlay and AirPrint are also here, with AirPlay bringing the ability to stream music, photos and video to Apple TV, and AirPrint finally enabling users to wirelessly print out content to AirPrint-enabled printers including the HP Photosmart, HP LaserJet Pro and HP Officejet.

Apple also said that iOS has 125 million users around the world, while its App Store now has more than 300,000 apps, 40,000 of them being native iPad applications.

Home Screen

iOS 4.2 for iPad features the same familiar look as iOS 4.0 for the iPhone. The big new feature is Folders -- grouping of icons by category.

Multitasking Bar

Double click the home button on the iPad and scroll to the right. Just like on the iPhone, this gives you quick access to some music and app controls.

With iOS 4.2 for iPad, the screen rotation lock button on the side of the iPad has been switched to an audio mute button. That means that to lock the rotation of the screen, you need to use the new multitasking bar. We wish that we could still use the physical button, but the software button works just fine.

A nice touch for the iPad is the ability to control your brightness and control your volume. Brightness controls come in handy when reading books or magazines or playing back video. Speaking of video playback, when you are in the vicinity of an Apple TV, you can activate AirPlay from this menu too.

Folders

You can store 20 apps per folder. Just like in iOS 4.0 for the iPhone, the folders are named automatically based on what type of apps are inside, but you can also edit the name yourself.

Multitasking

Double tapping on the home button brings up a list of other applications you can open or switch to in iOS 4.2. Apps that support fast-app switching will let you seamlessly switch back and forth without losing your place. If you are listening to music or watching a video, the audio continues to play when you open another app.

Game Center

iOS 4.2 for iPad includes Game Center. Just like iOS 4.1 for iPhone, Game Center lets you compare scores, earn badges and play games with your friends or with a random stranger across the Internet.

Game Center shows you what Game Center games you have used on your iPad, iPod touch or iPhone. You can compare your scores and leaderboards with your friends.

Unified Inbox

Just like iOS 4.0 for the iPhone, the iPad now has a unified inbox. You can view all your accounts at once or view each account separately.

You can now print an e-mail message to an AirPrint compatible device.

Clicking on Print will let you select your printer (AirPrint printers are auto-discovered) and select how many copies you want.

One of the new features with iOS 4.2 is that you can search for a word or phrase within a web page. Type text into the search bar and below the search suggestions is a new option: 'On this Page.'

Just like on the iPad, clicking the bookmark button in the web browser or in supported apps will bring up a new 'Print' option.

Wikileaks had set this afternoon as the date to release another round of secret U.S. government documents - this time, over 250,000 classified cables from various U.S. embassies.

Hours prior to the documents' publication, Wikileaks tweeted that the website was experiencing a 'mass distributed denial of service attack.' But whether or not the site goes down - it's functioning, albeit slowly at this time - the documents released today have already been distributed to a number of international news agencies who are publishing their findings from the trove of leaked documents.

Today's publication marks the latest in a string of secret government documents published by the rogue media organization. In July, Wikileaks released the Afghan War Diary, containing over 91,000 reports from the war in Afghanistan from 2004 to 2010.

Contents of the Correspondence

As these documents capture some of the day-to-day correspondence between the U.S. State Department and some 270 embassies around the world, they reveal a mixture of political intrigue and political gossip.  The New York Times reports, for example, that the documents 'describe the volatile Libyan leader as rarely without the companionship of 'his senior Ukrainian nurse,' described as 'a voluptuous blonde.'' 

Documents also point to the Chinese government's role in hacking Google, something that led the company to temporarily pull out of the country earlier this year.

This Wikileaks publication is likely to impact U.S. diplomatic relations, including for example, revelations

 about State Department personnel being urged to collect data ('spy'?) on foreign dignitaries and on UN officials.  The State Department has been briefing countries over the past few days in anticipation for today's release.

Media Coverage, Government Reaction

Coverage of the documents can be found in a number of places, including the New York Times, in the British newspaper the Guardian, and in the German Der Spiegel.  The raw data is also available on the Wikileaks website.

The White House has issued a statement, condemning 'in the strongest terms the unauthorized disclosure of classified documents and sensitive national security information.'  Last spring, intelligence analyst Bradley Manning was charged with leaking many of the documents that make up today's release, as well as video footage of a 2007 airstrike in which civilians were killed.  Manning faces a court martial and prison time for his role in leaking this information.

9 Things to Try in Google Chrome 9: "Google Chrome 9 is now available, two months after the previous release and two weeks later than Google's self-imposed deadline. Here are 9 features you should try in this new version:

1. WebGL is now enabled by default in Google Chrome and you can try the 3D web apps from Google's gallery. Don't miss Body Browser, a Google Earth for the human body, and the WebGL Aquarium.

2. Google Instant is now integrated with Chrome's address bar, but this feature is not for everyone because it automatically loads web pages as you type. It's disabled by default, so you need to enable it by checking 'Enable Instant for faster searching and browsing' in the Options dialog.

3. Cloud Print can be enabled from Options > Under the hood if you use Windows. This features lets you print from devices that can't communicate directly with printers. The first two applications that use Cloud Print are the mobile versions of Gmail and Google Docs.

4. Chrome supports WebP files. WebP is a new image format created by Google whose main advantage is that it offers better compression. 'Our team focused on improving compression of the lossy images, which constitute the larger percentage of images on the web today. To improve on the compression that JPEG provides, we used an image compressor based on the VP8 codec that Google open-sourced in May 2010.' Here's an example of WebP image.

5. Right-click on an extension button next to the address bar and select "Hide button". When you change your mind, go to Tools > Extensions and click on "Show button" next to the corresponding extension.

6. Create desktop shortcuts for your web apps: right-click on an app in the new tab page and select 'create shortcut'. You can also add shortcuts to the Start Menu and the Quick Launch Bar if you use Windows.

7. Launch web apps in a new window. Right-click on a web app and select 'open as  window'.

8. Install extensions that add custom menu options to images. For example, install Clip It Good to upload any image from a web page to Picasa Web Albums.

9. Install extensions that use the Omnibox API to associate keywords with new search engines. For example, install the DOI Resolver extension and type doi 10.1205/096030802760309188 in the address bar. The extension added a new search engine and associated it with the keyword doi.
