DIY: how to repaint a console table (Mixed MDF and solid wood)

We badly need a prop for Zet and Anthony’s pre-nup shoot. A chest of drawers or a table that is in pastel colors. But where are we going to get it?

When tadah! Delivery from our supplier for At home furniture store.

A small half circle console table.

Yeah it’s brown and too conventional, but it has the shape but definitely not the color.

But since we wanted most of the things for Zet’s wedding to be personalized and hands-on, Lang and I got our hand ready for some messy fun.

What you’ll need:

Sand paper (tons of it)

Epoxy primer

Brushes

Enamel paint for top coat

First sand the surface to remove the little gloss finish in order for the paint to stick.

But not too hard because the table’s surface is just medium density fiber board and if we sand too much it will expose the particle board.

The epoxy primer comes it two parts, one white paint and the other a clear one that makes the paint harden very fast. You have to mix it very well in order to get the right consistency.

Apply the first coat of the primer. Let it dry and apply the second coat.

It will look glossy like this one after it dries up. But that's not what you want it to look like before you paint over the colored paint.

Sand it.

Lesson learned here. We shouldn't have done it inside the office (DUH!).

We were covered with white dust.

After you have sanded everything smooth. Mind you its not that easy to sand it.

We sand it for almost 2 days because we can’t get the smoothness we were looking for.

Finally apply the top coat. Letting it dry before applying the second and last coat.

And there you go. From conventional colored piece to a chic furniture. Ready for the photo shoot!

P.S. we did not intend to sell it again but when we placed it back in the showroom trying to decide where to use it or place it. Somebody inquired about it and actually bought it! Good job!

The Invitation

Zet already picked what she wants her invitation to look like.

She wanted it to be vintage, something out of the ordinary but still a little familiar for the guests,
something unique yet formal.

The peg is vintage chic. A touch of classic elegance and a touch of sweetness all rolled up in an envelope.

But up until the last minute there were a few changes ending up to a numerous choices of invitations sent to different people.

But initially the couple wanted an invitation with their personal touch.

The First set.

We were all ready and excited to work on the "DIY"invitation. We saw an invitation using stamp and we said why not. Lang made some of the elements and we had it made by a local-on-the-side-street stamp maker. We wanted to give it a try first to check if his workmanship would pass our criticizing eyes.
And it did! To add a little touch of vintage we made use of a paper from a sketch pad. It has texture and the right thickness and the color is not that white. Perfect! For days we did the stamping and to our frustrations only Lang was successful in making a perfect imprint.

These are the stamps for the Wish Tree tags and for the Thank You tags for the give-a-ways

Zet bought decorative card stock and we made RSVP envelopes out of it.

RSVP's are stamped and other details were hand written by Zet herself

even the Dessert banner for the dessert table was made by her.

These are the paraphernalia we used to make personal touches

These are made out of parchment paper and card stock with embossed print to bind all the invitation together

All bound and ready to go.

All envelopes labeled and sealed

Each invitation were sealed with this old fashioned wax seal with an A monogram for Zet's new surname.

And each invitation that should be sent through mail was packed and still styled to look like a vintage mail.

Zet also had the inkling of placing a&z stamp randomly outside the envelope to add detail

but we were not sure if the post office would allow it.

We also made a matching itinerary and breakfast invites for the day itself for the entourage.

Printed the words "tomorrow is going to be the best day ever" on a brown bag that acted as an envelope.

For the invitation itself since Zet wants it simple yet with a little distinction, we had the first 2 pages printed using embossed print, the invitations came a little late than the scheduled time, but when it came we were happy with it. so off we go sending the invites to a few closest friends of Zet, BUT when their parents saw it, the dilemma began.

the second set

We didn't foresee that the font we used were too small and the embossed effect made it a little harder to read especially to those who are having a hard time reading such small prints. Back to the computer.

We decided to just change the font type and re-size it a little and instead of having just two pages we made it three for the entourage names.
Immediately sent some again.
Another comment came.
It lack color.

Third Set

We tried printing it to a pink card stock but it was too cheeky.

so we change some of the color of the words pink instead and added a gray border.

this passed--- to the other half soon to be in laws but it still lack style to the other.

Fourth and Final set

Zet came up with another wholly different look.

so again printed it and sent the remaining invites.

all in all Zet and Anthony's invites had four designs distributed to different people.

(talk about variety! hehe)

so if you ask me which is my favorite? I'd pick the first one ;)

Lesson learned: Before you go and print multiple invitations to give away, it's better to request for a sample to see if the letters you use are readable enough and if the colors are OK.
Secondly, have all the parties approve and decide on that one invitation you will be giving away.
Better to have a sit down meeting to discuss what needed to be change.

Though having variety won't hurt. ^__^

Anthony and Suzette's Big day

Last December 28, 2012 was a big day for our very own Suzette.

Knowing Suzette's love for DIY's and being hands on and meticulous she can't help but to take over the whole planning for her special day.

You can see in the love for details and thaoughtfulness she had put from day 1

(giving away the save the date goodies)

The save the date was accompanied with delicious cupcakes from Sugar Rush

The invitation layout was a collaboration of Lang and Zet and we even inserted a nice patterned wall paper inside each envelope to make it more special and extra ordinary.

Instead of asking help from a professional event organizer she thinks the three of us (Lang, her, and me) could pull this one off. AND WE DID!! HALLELUJAH!

And I can say, it was not a walk in the park organizing a very important event of someone's life involving 400 and counting guests and numerous staff.

Ok, so why is there a wedding entry in this blog?

We can talk anything about design here right? And believe it or not this event has the most design topics we can cover.

Although this post is sooooooo delayed,

(I had a hard time collecting the photos from different people since I wasn't able to take photos myself,

(my hands were full! literally! hahaha!),

I'll be giving you guys the blow by blow happening during Suzette's big day, one post at a time. ^__^

A TOUCH OF DRAMA: Living and dining + 3 bedrooms(THE BIG REVEAL)

FINALLY!!!

After the long wait, (well most of it our fault, because we weren’t able to update you guys immediately.. sooorry... ), here it is! The big reveal..

The project when we got there was like an abandoned house. Out-dated and sad.

Then we came along and made this

I know we promised you guys a room with white furniture, but we can only find dark colored wood beds and this is the closest tufted designed headboard we can come up with. But hey, it worked well didn't it? =) hooray!

Turned to a welcoming entrance.

As we mentioned on the earlier post we were also asked to suggest on the exterior of the house so a gray walls for the exterior and a lighter shade of gray for the bands and mouldings. Continuing the slate stone accent of the front door columns and adding modern looking light fixtures.

here we are putting the finishing touches..

For the minor bedrooms, since the client were on a budget, they decided to postponed the styling first,

But all in all they were quite satisfied with the result.

The cherry on top that night was when our client told us “I could have never thought of doing this, Thank you very much”

And thank YOU very much for trusting us!

We have presented the colors and now they have painted it already.

Even without the furniture, the house already transformed.

It already gives off this nice vibes as you enter it.

Talk about the power of color.

The kitchen is almost done although there were a few things we need to fix

like this painted sides. NO. it shouldn't be black

and the island top shouldn't have this edge.

Yay! our gigantic wardrobe is up!

A TOUCH OF DRAMA: Master Bedroom and minor rooms (THE PRESENTATION)

First off, we are so totally behind with our post.

For the next few days we’ll be bombarding you guys with posts regarding this project. We actually finished this one already about a month ago,

(ooops... L)

sorry we weren’t able to update our blog, we were so totally occupied with an upcoming event and we are all excited about it, and we will be sharing this one to you soon. PROMISE.

And so let’s pick up where we left off.

For the Master bedroom we were thinking of a nice chic and elegant room where our client can relax after a stressful day at work.

We went on with taupe colored walls with furniture and accents of white.

we also gave the client a second option since its hard to look for white furniture available here (we are in Deat, Camarines Norte, Philippines ^__^ ), just in case.

This option uses dark colored wood

except for the big customized wardrobe we will be installing that is still in white.

for her daughter's room we went for light pink walls with accents of bluish gray walls

and white furniture

For the minor bedroom we decided to paint the other room in sand and the other in green.

Also we didn't want to dictate its occupant’s gender so we went to a safe color.

The minor bedrooms will be used by the client’s sister or brother or parents.

the icky bathroom we decided to re-tile everything from floor to ceiling, with just two colors.

Since the bathroom is not that big, staying with simple tile design would give the bathroom a sophisticated and give an impression that its not that small at all.

so there is the rest of our plan.

A TOUCH OF DRAMA: Living and dining (THE PRESENTATION)

Since the client has a restricted budget, we’ll be looking for materials and furniture of what’s available locally. (we’re in Daet, Camarines Norte >_^) usually we’ll do the shopping in manila.

So instead of Manila we’ll look around Daet or in Naga.

But for the furniture we’ll shop around At home.

Basing the design from the sofa set which the client liked when she visited At home,

we came up with this idea.

And this color palette.

Using wall banners for the wall to add drama.

And wall decors such as frames and floating ledges

For the layout, usually people tend to arrange the furniture leaning them against the wall.

Sometimes it’s not a good idea. Especially with this, the living and dining needs a good flow for traffic, positioning the furniture where they can define an area without overlapping a walkway or another area. So we suggests to use this layout.

Sooooo excited to create the drama!

Classic Christmas: Spontaneous Christmas Tree Styling

yesterday we were surprised by a visit of one of our clients,

we did their 2nd floor residential house before,

she wanted us to visit it again to glam up their third floor for a party this coming weekend.

we were just suppose to check some displays and some pillows she added as accents on some sofa.

when we got there the 2nd floor was still nice and glamorous as when we left it after photo shoot.

and then the client started talking about Christmas trees and ornaments.

and when she found out that we can also style up their Christmas tree she was as excited as we were.

and our visit became an instant styling visit

the color for their Christmas Tree was red and gold, a classic Christmas color combination.

there were glitters and gold everywhere

their Christmas tree is a traditional green plastic pine tree with gold glitters on every tip

we started of with the lights but unfortunately some of the lights were not working so instead of a close speckles of light we adjusted it and had a much larger gap between them but still turned out neat.

we then work on with gold leaf and pretty flowers wrapped it around the Christmas tree with ribbons

and then scattered the remaining ornaments,

finding some dull spots were we can add up magic and glitter.

finally our tree styling is done.

The client was so happy she wanted to fill every spaces of the room with Christmas ornaments.

pretty and calm

I'm more of a neutral girl when it comes to interior design and paints.

I'm more inclined with mocha, taupe, sand, gray

even in clothing I prefer blacks and grays. whereas when I was younger I love bright popping colors. hmm.. sign of aging?? noooooooo...

but I'm beginning to appreciate pastel colors that are soft and girly.

of course this is through the influence of my design partner Suzette who is overly obsessed with pastels and Parisian designs.

here are a few of my inspirations that made me all giddy with pastels.

look at the pretty colors!

you can deny it all you want, but every girl had that pink phase

(the love-hate relationship with the color pink)

this has the wonderful mixture of all the lovely pastel colors

and yes I also had this purple phase

back in high school when I want everything in purple,

i never thought an all lavender interiors can be this pretty

blue is actually a feminine color.

I Love powder blue shade.

a mixture of cream and blue tones gives a girly yet mature aura for a room

this spells fun but still demure

a little serious touch

for those who are sharing their spaces with the man of their dreams

this is so me.

I don't know whats with shiny shimmering objects but i get attracted to them quickly

a calm sitting area with the use of powder blue-ish-gray-ish wallpaper, upholster and rug

pastel and gold for a little glimmer

not a bad idea huh?

aren't you still not inspired with all this wonderful pastel ideas for your spaces?

its all girly and pretty but you can't deny it,

it calms us girls imagining ourselves sitting in one of these rooms!

LOVING PATTERNS

Designing a space doesn’t end with choosing the right furniture and hanging the right frames. We also need to keep in mind the other elements in design, such as color, light, texture and pattern.

And how else to play with texture in the simplest way? By using patterns!

Patterns and texture are different things but visually they can be one and the same.

We loved DAMASK PATTERN last year. It was all over!

Its like damsk pattern invaded every nooks and cranny of the design world.

Rugs, wallpapers, curtains, furniture...

Towels, invitations, stationeries, even food, everywhere!

And now new patterns are invading our interior world!

TRELLIS PATTERN

Trellis pattern are geometric shapes interwoven to create another pattern.

This pattern has the sophistication and classic look that damask pattern has but is not too girly.

One of the famous patterns today is one made by Kelly Wearstler

See how she combines geometric shapes?

CHEVRON PATTERN

this are patterns that looks like a nested letters "V" and sometimes called a herringbone pattern.

this pattern I'm also starting to love.

maybe because its an easy DIY next to stripes

MORROCAN PATTERN

there are quite a number of different moroccan patterns.

but this is the prettiest.

generally a morrocan pattern resembles an arabic/morrocan embelishment

as seen on morrocan arcitectures and arches

its quite similar to a quatrefoil

but notice that a morrocan pattern such as this has a pointed top and bottom or sides either way

QUATREFOIL

its very famous in art, architecture and christian symbolism

which are four overlapping circles with the same diameter.

Gothic and Renaissance era are rich with the use of this pattern it is usually seen on top of Gothic arches.

and now we are all loving it.

FRET

A lot of early civilizations loved and used this pattern,

Egyptians, Romans, Indians, Mayan and Aztec and lets not forget Greek.

"It is a running or repeated ornament, consisting of lengths of straight lines or narrow bands, usually connected and at the right angles to each other in T, L, or square-cornered G shapes." -encyclopedia Britanica

LATTICE

this is quite similar to the Trellis pattern but notice that lattice uses straight overlapping lines whereas with a Trellis pattern, it uses a combination of straight and curved patterns.

OGEE

this pattern is quite famous with wall papers,

I haven't seen one being DIY'ed though for some obvious reason that it's quite difficult to make it yourself.

although I've seen this pattern during the 70's this is evident with my mom and dad's background pictures of their homes.

Ogee pattern is a curve shaped somewhat like an S,

consisting of two arcs that curve in opposite senses, so that the ends are parallel.

(according to wikipedia)

STRIPES

my all time go to when I'm bored with a wall

add a banner - this is a single stripe that we put on solid colored wall for accent

put on some stripes and viola!

Its quite neat to see the use of pattern in anything we can put our hands on,

it adds detail, interest and drama to one boring surface.

Hmm.. Maybe I could create one of my own.. soon.. ^_^

Woot!! Another house to beautify for us!

The client just purchase the house and wanted to renovate it. But she doesn’t want major changes. Painting walls and ceiling and a little demolition of unwanted panels here and there would be just enough for the given budget.

What’s special about this project aside from having restricted budget is that we’ll also be suggesting design for the exterior look of the house.

Oh we love challenges! Off to make the presentation!

So here are the pictures of what will be transforming..

all the floors were covered with linoleum and the existing lines are quite out-dated.

oh MY!! It's been so long since we last posted! We were so busy with the a new project (yay! we'll be posting it here real soon, promise!) that we haven't had time to keep you all posted. To make up for it here now is the reveal of the second kid's room.!

With the color palette we provided for this room we came up with this...

We wanted to give him a little freedom by putting this writable decal. Not to mention its in guitar shape! Perfect!

Red black and green. (for Italian race car.. ^_^)

Since we didn't find any car themed bed sheets we tried to incorporate the car theme in some of the elements like this letter cut-outs.

This is a cute lamp and clock, right? ^_^

How we knew he loved it?

We were suppose to take a picture of the room after we set it up, but we weren't able to because he was already there sleeping. ^_^

Fresh New Start: One of the designer’s own bedroom

Being an interior designer, it is a hard task for us deciding what look we want for our space. We are exposed to different designs and styles, it gets so overwhelming that sometimes we tend to be fickle-minded with the design we picked.

Two years ago my room was a work in progress, still undecided what style I wanted.

This year, I decided to revamp and give it a new look. Right now, I’m super in love with Paris and anything Parisian, that’s why I come up with Grey-Glam-Parisian inspired room! The room is still a work in progress, I need to buy more stuff to complete the whole look but here’s a sneak peak.

Totally loving this style.

FROM HOUSE TO A HOME: A Kid's dreamland. THE REVEAL!

Woot! Done with this playful room finally!

At first we were kind of problematic about the circle mirrors. We are not very confident to have it made. So we’re on a look out for a good circular wall mirror, that is also light enough not to be that fragile. (hmm.. me and my wild imagination) Good thing, Dexterton have one!! Yey!! (reflective circular stickers)

The frame gallery we put here can be change into a more mature pieces when he grows older.

This colourful box shelves were stacked up to make a side table for the little boy.

Personalize it.

We bought these letters from a stall in market market and painted them with spray paint.

To add more fun we added this nice clock above the study area.

The kid didn’t say anything but we can see how excited he was, he kept going back in his room sneaking in some of his toys.

This area is where we became very giddy much!

From bare

To flair... viola!!!!

The feel was very hotelish indeed.

Taupe beddings.

Add a little chrome here and there.

And to complete the whole experience we lighted up a green tea oil by body shop.

The clients were out when we were dressing up the place and when they did come home...

“wow!” is all they said and that was enough for us. ^_^

Finally it’s all done!!

we were eyeing for mercury lamp drop light but since it's so expensive we went for a cheaper alternative

We placed a floating ledge in between the living and dining wall and decorated it with chrome and white displays.

“I never thought of putting a floating ledge there, its so beautiful. I was just thinking of putting a simple picture frame to complete the look, but this is wonderful!” (thank you.. **blushes all over** hihi)

The sixteen year old teenage boy occupying this room loves to have company around.

but the room has little space to accommodate a lot of people.

so we'd rather give him a comfy bed and something to brag about.

We wouldn’t want it to look all boyish since the color of the wall is in blue.

So we’ll incorporate a black and white theme.

Such as this.

Can’t wait! Yay!
