Osamu Tezuka's Princess Knight is here! I shrieked out loud with joy - yes, in the office - when I read the news a while back.

If you don't know what Princess Knight is, here's a brief summary:

Sapphire is a princess who must pretend to be a prince.In Heaven, the souls of unborn children are being prepared for their births. Choppy, an inexperienced apprentice angel, accidentally gives a child who will be born female both a pink "girl's" heart and a blue "boy's" heart. When this is found out, it's too late to fix the mistake, so Choppy is banished to Earth in a weak mortal body to watch over the twin-hearted child. Meanwhile, the King learns to his dismay that the Queen has given birth to a girl, and due to complications cannot have another child. Women cannot inherit the throne, and the King knows that his closest male relative, Duke Duralumon, is a wicked man who would oppress the people. So the King pretends that Sapphire was born male, with only a handful of close advisors knowing the truth.

Princess Knight is a classic and its translation has been long awaited. Don't miss it!

I had no idea when I started reading just how creepy this book was gonna get. If you want to be freaked out, grab a copy! Otherwise, put the book down and slowly back away.

Th following books are from the VOYA (Voice of Youth Advocates - "the library magazine serving those who serve young adults") Nonfiction Honor List of 2010. To meet the criteria for inclusion on this list, books must "contain some element(s) that raise them above other books on the same topic, such as unique research, creative presentation, inventive use of photography, or filling a niche at the middle level." (VOYA, August 2011) These books are suitable for middle school readers, although, even adults may find some great reading here!

Frederick Douglass: A Noble Life by David A. Adler

Born into slavery in 1818 and raised on a Maryland plantation under brutal conditions, Frederick Douglass, against all odds, grew up to become a famous orator, journalist, author, and adviser to U.S. presidents. Many contemporaries found it hard to believe that he was an escaped slave with no formal education. Douglass was also controversial. He urged slaves to revolt and befriended the radical abolitionist John Brown. A pivotal figure in U.S. history, he helped Abraham Lincoln issue the Emancipation Proclamation and was an ambassador to Haiti. Timeline, chapter notes, bibliography.

Hold Me Closer, Necromancer by Lish McBride

K, this is seriously awesome. There's Sam, a teenage boy that just found out that a) he's a necromancer and b) his powers have been mysteriously bound so he can't fight back against the older and slightly psychotic necromancer hunting him. Add in werewolves, a living but decapitated head, and plenty of supernatural adventure and snarky humor and you've got a can't-put-it-down-until-you're-done book.
