Facbook is preparing for a initial public stock offering next year.Facebook is exploring raising $10 billion, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal, based on information from sources with knowledge of developments. Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has not decided on the terms of the IPO, and the banks to be involved have not yet been named, but CFO David Ebersman is in discussions with bankers in the Silicon Valley. If Facebook is successful in reaching these targets, it would be one of the biggest offerings ever. By comparison, Hewlett Packard and 3m have a valuation less than half this size.

Internet Explorer appears to be continuing a downward spiral

According to new data posted this week from a company called Net Applications, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer appears to be continuing a downward spiral. Over the last ten months, Microsoft has lost five percent of the web browser market while Google’s Chrome has gained about six percent. The amount of people using Internet Explorer is expected to fall below the 50 percent mark around late May of 2012. One bright point for Microsoft is that usage of its latest version of Internet Explorer, IE9, increased by about two percent from July to August. However, IE9 is limited to usage on Windows Vista and Windows 7. Windows XP users are limited to Internet Explorer 8 until upgrading.

Across all operating systems, Internet Explorer 8 is the most popular browser at a bit over 30 percent of the market. Google Chrome 13 followed in second place at about 11 percent of the market and the aging, third place Internet Explorer 6 clocked in at about 10 percent. This version of Internet Explorer is often reviled by web designers and developers, but it seemed to hold fairly strong over July to August and barely dropped in usage. The ability of Google Chrome to quietly upgrade without bothering the consumer seems to have helped Google keep its user base consistently using the latest version of the browser.

Mozilla’s Firefox has remained fairly stagnant over the last 10 months, but has only lost about one percent of the browser market. Mozilla recently switched to an upgrade cycle identical to Google Chrome as the inability to roll out quick updates made the browser seem stale in comparison to Chrome. Apple’s Safari browser slowly gained market share over the last year to the tune of one percent and the Opera browser seems to be slowly fading away. Opera’s share dropped from 2.42 percent in September 2010 to 1.68 percent in August 2011.

Facebook, Twitter as addictive as 'smoking or drinking'

Several studies have found that Facebook, Twitter and Google are as addictive as drugs.

People react like twitchy addicts denied their drugs when forced to give up access to the Internet and other electronic media.

And just like a boozer who leans on bourbon as a social lubricant, online addicts believe that people who aren't hooked on the information superhighway, text messaging and instant messaging are huge bores, reports the New York Post.

"Giving up technology was considered by some to be as hard as quitting smoking or drinking," said the research firm Intersperience about a new study of people deprived of their online habits.

According to the study, a full 53 percent of 1,000 people surveyed reported feeling 'upset' when "deprived of Internet connection."

Microsoft may be getting into social networking

Weeks after Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) launched Google+, rumors have begun making the rounds that Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) is working on its own social networking platform.

The chatter started with an image posted on the Web. It appeared to depict a landing page for a service called "Tulalip." A message on the page read "With Tulalip, you can find what you need and share what you know easier than ever." It offered options to sign in throughFacebook and Twitter.

The image appeared briefly on a site with the URL "Socl.com," according to a report on Fusible.com. A Whois registry search and a DNS lookup for Socl.com indicate Microsoft owns the URL.

The image has since disappeared. Later, the Socl.com website displayed only a message stating that Socl.com is an internal design project from a team in Microsoft Research which was mistakenly published to the Web. "We didn't mean to, honest," the message reads.

Microsoft spokesperson Jackie Lawrence echoed that statement in response to a request for comment.(via http://www.technewsworld.com)

Facebook may launch Skype-powered video chat

Social networking site Facebook is planning to launch a video chat function next week for its millions of users in association with Skype, says a report.

"Facebook will launch a new video chat product, powered by Skype, that works in browser," technology blog TechCrunch said citing a source.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg last week tipped off press that the company would be launching an "awesome" new product next week that has been built by Facebook's Seattle team.

However, the press invitations to the event did not disclose anything more than "please join us for an event at Facebook on July 6."

The partnership could substantially increase Skype usage, which currently has 170 million users.

In addition, the move would "certainly help Facebook become even stickier for users as they start to have voice and video chat as an option to communicate." It has more than 750 million active users.

The report said that product has been built on Skype and will include a desktop component.

However, it's not clear whether it will work if a user has already installed Skype on the computer, or if additional software will need to be downloaded even if the user already uses Skype.

The social networking site has been introducing various services in order to capture more online users. For instance, it has launched a new payment system -- Facebook Credit -- in India.

Mozilla Firefox 5.0 available

Mozilla will release version 5 of its web browser today, moving the web browser onto a three-month update cycle to match competing browser Google Chrome.

Mozilla's update cycle received hefty criticism before the launch of Firefox 4, after it took 14 months (January 2010 to March 2011) for Firefox 3.6 to become version 4.

It moved the final beta of its browser (beta 7) into release candidate status last Friday in preparation for today's unveiling.

Like Firefox 4, version 5 supports Linux distributions, Mac OS X and all current Windows operating systems, from XP to Vista to Windows 7.

Given the much tighter release schedule for the latest version of Firefox, there are few radical improvements since version 4.

The main tweaks are better JavaScript, memory and network performance, and improved standards support for canvas, HTML5, XHR, and MathML markup languages.

Firefox 5 is still one of only two mainstream browsers that has WebGL-based 3D graphics rendering, the other being Google's Chrome browser which is now on version 12.

However, Mozilla has had to fix a security problem stopping WebGL content from loading cross-domain textures in this version.

We checked the browser performance of the release candidate, which shows it is fighting hard to keep up with other browsers.

JavaScript execution as measured by FutureMark's Peacekeeper JavaScript browser benchmark was up 15 per cent compared with Firefox version 4, and two per cent using Webkit.org's SunSpider benchmark (version 0.9.1).

Web standards compliance as measured by the Web Standards Project Acid3 benchmark is the same as Firefox 4, at 97 per cent.

A few browser market share statistics from StatCounter and NetMarketShare, respectively, show Firefox usage still slipping slightly compared to Google Chrome.

From December 2010 to May 2011, NetMarketShare's data shows Firefox's market share slipping about one percentage point, while StatCounter's data gives a drop of about 1.5 points.

The biggest climber is Google Chrome, which gained 2.6 percentage points market share since December according to NetMarketShare, and 4.5 according to StatCounter.

Mozilla's roadmap claims the community is committed to releasing Firefox versions 6 and 7 before the end of the year.

New Facebook Worm Appears, And it is spreading very fast.

Social networking website Facebook has been a breeding ground for many scams recently, and now there is a new worm spreading fast. The worm disguises itself as a message from a friend on the user's Wall, stating "WTF I cant believe youre tagged in this vid" or "ROFL I cant believe youre tagged in this video" or "OMG why are you tagged in this vid".

Once the user clicks on the video, it seems to commence loading in an enlarged player window.

After the user instinctively clicks the Play button, it does not play any video, but posts a message that reads, "Select Address bar. Press Ctrl+V. Press Enter."

What it actually does in the background is that it scans the user's friends list and generates a code, which it copies into the clipboard memory. When the user selects the address bar and presses <CTRL>+ (which is the keyboard shortcut for paste) then , he/she ends up posting a similar message on one of his/her friend's Wall.

It is not yet known what data, apart from your friends list, is accessed by the worm, but the possibilities are unnerving. The next time you see such a message, avoid clicking on the play button and promptly delete the post.

Google launches music service

Google launched an online music locker service on Tuesday that allows users to store and access their songs wherever they are, similar to one launched by Amazon.com in March.

And like the Amazon Cloud Drive player, the Google music service is being introduced without any prior licensing deals with major music labels, following months of fruitless negotiations.

Google unveiled the 'Music Beta by Google' service with a demo at a developer conference in San Francisco.

The new service will allow a user to upload up to 20,000 songs on to the service and the demo showed a range of music player features for managing songs in a user's library.

Music Beta will be available for free for a limited time to users who request an invitation in the United States.

Google has been working on a music service as a feature of itsAndroid mobile operating system to better compete with iTunes. The Google music service comes alongside a licensed movie service which allows YouTube and Android device users to rent movies from $1.99.

Amazon's service caused a furor in the music industry because it had not reached any licensing agreements with major music companies.

The online retailer defended itself vigorously against suggestions by some music sources that Cloud Drive service infringes copyright.

Since the launch, Amazon executives have met with label owners to negotiate for a more advanced music service.

Several music industry sources privately expressed concern atGoogle's music plans but said they hoped the search giant would continue negotiating for a service with more features than storage and personal streaming of the songs.

Reuters sources said last month that Apple is at the final stages of reaching a deal with at least one label for a licensed online music locker and others are also close.

"If Apple launches a legitimate licensed cloud service and Google launches a dumb locker there's no question who will be the winner again," said one executive who asked not to be named.-Yahoo news

Google has added yet another eye-candy feature to its web-based email service - Gmail. Over two years ago, Google had added themes in Gmail which certainly impressed several users, geeks and Gmail loyalists. Today onwards, Google will let you customize your Gmail with any image or your own custom image for the background. Yes, you can customize your Gmail with Kelly Clarkson's wallpaper, Dark Knight Rises Poster, or even a photo of your own. Wonder why took Gmail so long to introduce this feature.

Do note that adding a huge image to your Gmail background might make your web browser a wee bit slower. To customize background image on Gmail, go to Themes Tabs in Settings or just click here to go there directly in Gmail.

In the Themes tab, the last option is "Create your own theme" where you must click and a pop-up window will show up. Over there, you'll get a wireframe like snapshot of your Gmail, where you can customize the different areas with the colors of your choice. Click on the small box on top left corner of that window to give you a drop-down menu about colors and an option to upload image.

ISRO To Launch Three New Satellites

ISRO announced today that it will launch three satellites on April 20 as reported. These include an advanced remote sensing satellite to study and manage natural resources.

The space agency said, "Preparations for the launch of Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C16) carrying Resourcesat-2 satellite are progressing well at Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota. In this mission, PSLV-C16 will launch Resourcesat-2, Youthsat and X-Sat satellites. The Launch Authorisation Board scheduled to meet on April 16, 2011 will review the readiness of the launch vehicle, satellites and ground stations and authorise the launch of PSLV-C16/Resourcesat-2 mission."

The PSLV-C16 will carry the Resourcesat-2, which is an advanced remote sensing satellite weighing 1206 kg for the study and management of natural resources and is built by ISRO. The other satellites to be carried aboard include Youthsat, which is a 92 kg nanosatellite joint venture between India and Russia to study stars and the atmosphere, while there is also a 105 kg microsatellite imaging application X-sat, which is built by the Singapore-based Nanyang Technological University.

The PSLV-C16 is hot on the heels of the failed Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) attempt by ISRO on December 25 last year and the world's attention will therefore be on this launch. The countdown for the launch will commence early on April 18, while the launch is scheduled on April 20 at 10:12 am from Sriharikota spaceport.

Over 10 Million Scammed On Facebook

Spammers have invited over 10 million Facebook users to fake events in yet another attempt to generate income from online survey scams according to a report by the IT security and data protection firm Sophos. Even as we file this report, the scam is in progress and several thousand unwitting Facebook users are falling prey to it.

One of the event known as "Who blocked you from his friend list?" has already tricked over 165,000 people into signing-up, with an astounding 10.3 million users still deciding whether or not to respond. Scammers embed instructions into the 'More info' section of the event's summary and this convinces Facebook users to unwittingly visit the webpages for online surveys or competitions, which are a source of revenue for the scammers by means of commission. Sometimes, users are asked to provide a mobile phone number, and if the user is naive enough to provide it, he/she will most probably end up getting signed up for an expensive premium rate service.

Senior Technology Consultant at Sophos, Graham Cluley said, "These spammed-out event invitations and links to survey scams are one of the biggest nuisances on Facebook right now, impacting millions of users every day. It would be great if Facebook was being more proactive in shutting down these obviously bogus events, as currently it's far too easy for the scammers to fill their pockets through schemes like this."

In case you are affected by this scam, then you must cancel your reservation for the event. You must also notify your friends that you have shared a bogus link with them and/or invited them to a fake event. In case you have submitted your mobile phone number, you must contact your mobile service provider and inform them to keep any bogus charges from appearing in your mobile account.

The moral of the story is that Facebook users must beware of such suspicious events and think twice before accepting invitations from an unknown source. (source- techtree.com)

Domain '.xxx' approved for Web porn sites

SAN FRANCISCO – You've heard of ".com" and ".org." Joining them soon will be their bawdy cousin: ".xxx."

On Friday, the board of directors of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, which oversees the Internet's naming system, approved the creation of a red-light district online for pornographic websites. It follows a decade-long battle over such a name.

The uproar over the idea has brought together unlikely bedfellows.

Religious groups argue that giving adult websites their own corner of the Internet legitimizes the content.

Pornographers worry it will ghettoize their sites. Although it's meant to be voluntary, they fear governments could try to mandate the domain's use, so that pornographic content is more easily blocked.

Diane Duke, executive director of the adult entertainment industry's Free Speech Coalition, said in a statement that ICANN has "disregarded overwhelming outpouring of opposition from the adult entertainment industry — the supposed sponsorship community" and dismissed the "interests of free speech on the Internet."

Supporters have maintained that approving the domain is in keeping with the principle of openness that has fueled the Internet's growth.

While the idea of ".xxx" has provoked a philosophical debate, for the U.S. company that submitted the application for the domain, the issue is little more than a matter of dollars and cents.

ICM Registry and its CEO, Stuart Lawley, who has led the fight for ICANN's approval of ".xxx," stand to profit handsomely from the rollout of ".xxx" websites — because he will be in charge of collecting fees for the use of the new domains.

Lawley plans to charge registrars $60 per year for the domain names. He estimates that he could sell as many as 500,000 by the time he rolls them out this summer.

"This was always going to be a very lucrative arrangement," he said in an interview Friday.

Lawley's prices have been a critical issue for opponents to his plan, since domain names typically sell for a fraction of what Lawley plans to charge. They often sell for $10 or less.

ICANN had repeatedly rejected Lawley's application since 2000, under pressure from Christian groups and governments unhappy with the spread of online porn. Lawley has pitched the suffix as a way for parents to more easily block access to the content. He argues it will be easier for Web filtering software to block ".xxx" sites since they are clearly labeled as porn.

Gmail Reset Deletes Emails, Chats Accidentally

Check if you are one of the unlucky ones

Several Gmail users have reported that their emails, chat history, labels, folders and basically just about every personal setting got deleted yesterday apparently due to some bug, according to a report on Huffington Post. Affected users are greeted with Gmail s welcome messages as if the account has been just created. The issue has reportedly affected around 0.29% or 5,00,000 Google Mail userbase, but has been updated to 0.08% when we last checked the status before posting this report.

Unfortunate users have been complaining on Gmail help forums about the issue. Google Employee and Gmail Specialist, Michelle has responded, "We're looking into this issue right now. I know how important your messages are to you. Thanks for reporting on the forum."

Google has been working to resolve this issue and you can read the latest status on Apps Status Dashboard overhere. The status as of 9:10 AM IST was "Google Mail service has already been restored for some users, and we expect a resolution for all users in the near future. Please note this time frame is an estimate and may change. This issue affects less than 0.08% of the Google Mail userbase. Google engineers are working to restore full access. Facebook Like to get Share Button Feature

Tests are being conducted with very limited number of Facebook users

Popular social network Facebook's Like button has given birth to thousands of serial likers! (Yes, I just made it up). Apparently to live up to the true motive of liking and sharing user-generated or uploaded content, Facebook had introduced a new Share button last year. Till date, you could like almost everything on Facebook but couldn't share the same in your News Feed with your connections. Mashable reports that the Like button is soon getting the Share functionality and thereby you can share the posted content with others.

Upcoming features on Facebook always keep showing up during the testing phase. Facebook spokeswoman Malorie Lucich informed that Facebook will continue to carry the Share button on the website. "We're always testing new products that incorporate developer feedback as we work to improve the Platform experience, and have no details to share at this time," Lucich said.

Basically any post, photo, video, or link you Like on Facebook would get the Share functionality as well so that you can share it with others. In a way, it s just going to increase the noise by duplication of same post. To Like something on Facebook is very different from sharing it with others. Marketers and publishers would certainly admire the new Share functionality of the Like button since the audience will be anticipated to like and share the content.

The new feature has its own set of merits and demerits. The merit lies is that users can share whatever they like with others after hitting the Like button. But the demerit lies in the fact that just because one hits the Like button it doesn't mean users wants to share it with his/her friends. In fact, just like several complain about certain users hitting Like button for everything possible, it just becomes difficult to judge accurately whether the purpose was served or not.

The share functionality for the Like button would be visible mostly on the Facebook web interface and mobile interface only. It won't impact the individual Like and Share plugins available as part of Social Plugins. However, we do not underestimate the Facebook user for they know what each feature stands for. Hence I hope if and when this new feature rolls out, users will make use of it judiciously.

But now, you can lodge a police complaint online, thanks to the e-complaint initiative of Maharashtra government to be kicked off in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane in this week, according to a report. Proposed in August last year, this project will finally see the light of the day.

All you need to do is to log on to http://maharashtra.gov.in and upload your complaint along with your mobile number. Soon after, you will receive a quick reply and an e-complaint number will be sent to your mobile for future reference to your complaint. Maps of each and every police station will be provided for the complainant to find out under which jurisdiction is he or she to lodge the e-complaint.

But if you think that e-complaint is the same as filing an FIR (First Information Report), then it is not so. After you file the e-complaint, the concerned police station will fix an appointment with you, so that you may visit the police station in person to lodge a formal FIR.

According to Rajkumar Vhatkar, deputy commissioner police (Operations), "The best part of this e-complaint facility is that every e-complaint will have accountability. As the complaint progresses, the complainant will be informed at each and every stage." The progress of the case will also be updated online. The website can be accessed here, although it shows that it is awaiting approval and will be formally launched soon.

While the fact remains that most people still tend to keep away from the police station due to undue fears, the e-complaint initiative will surely provide them with at least a little respite.

Google created a ruckus last month by accidentally removing the Reader Link from the navigation bar on the top. Everyone wondered what exactly was Google up to by fiddling around with top navigation menu. Unofficial Google Operating System blog reported that Google is rolling out new Navigation bar publicly to many users.

New Google Navigational bar does away with the underlines under the links and adds a colored bar which apparently could work fine with a touchscreen device like tablet. At the right end would rest the Search Settings, iGoogle settings and Privacy options. Just before that would be a drop down option next to your email account to switch quickly for multiple sign-in between different Gmail accounts.

It is quite possible that those who ve been given the new navigational bar won t see it for all services but only for Google Web Search, Google Image Search, Google Maps and Gmail.
